LGHL Ohio State basketball played 18 different lineups to beat Michigan

The Buckeyes surprised Michigan with new player combinations that could prove useful the rest of the season.

“We didn’t play perfect by any stretch. I thought our guys did a good job of keeping their composure and making the plays we had to make coming down the stretch.”

-Ohio State head coach Thad Matta, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

That Matta used a great variety of lineups--18 of them, to be exact--in Ohio State’s surprising 70-66 win over Michigan Saturday to give the Buckeyes their first win at Michigan in six years. That level of looks is a stark contrast to the lineups that Matta has been using for much of the season, especially in conference play, when he has relied mainly on the starting five to play in a mainly consistent formation. With point guard C.J. Jackson starting in place of the injured JaQuan Lyle (who still saw minutes Saturday) and Jae’Sean Tate getting into foul trouble early, Matta started switching things up early and managed to find a number of lineups that were successful in unique situations against the Wolverines.

Against Michigan, bench players played 50 total minutes, and eight players were on the floor for more than 10 minutes individually. While the points were not extreme (the bench combined for just 13 points), center Micah Potter and forward Andre Wesson brought different roles off the bench to contribute to the Buckeyes’ different lineups. While he was not used against Michigan, center David Bell has proven to bring a different kind of specialization which could be useful in other situations down the stretch. And Jackson, used in conjunction with Lyle or solo as point guard, gives different options for Ohio State for a smaller lineup.

More players on the court in more looks seemed to create a more engaged team as a whole, which is something that has been lacking throughout the season. While individual players have shown sparks of promise, the lineup as a whole has not been able to rely on talent alone to win games this season. Given the success against Michigan, Matta has a number of looks to rely on throughout the rest of the conference season which will be successful against different teams in different situations.

“The one area, too, that they see is these kids not only leave this program and go to the NFL, they start ... I’m watching the Pro Bowl, a Buckeye carries the ball, a Buckeye is blocking for him and a Buckeye tackles him.”

-Urban Meyer, via Austin Ward, ESPN

Having signed the second-ranked recruiting class in the country, the Ohio State Buckeyes have all the resources they need to continue to bring the best recruits in the country to Columbus for years to come. Two trips to the College Football Playoff, a national championship in the past three years and a track record of sending Buckeyes to the NFL all provide credibility for a historic name in college football with a proven (and current) winning program. Urban Meyer, a talented recruiter on his own, has been able to capitalize on the Ohio State brand, especially given the recent success of the program.

And while it is certainly a selling point to send players to the NFL (including the even dozen taken in 2016), perhaps the greater factor is the playing time former Buckeyes receive once they do make their respective rosters. Ezekiel Elliott, Joey Bosa, Michael Thomas and Eli Apple all turned heads as rookies, with Elliott even making it to the Pro Bowl after leading the NFL in rushing in the regular season.

The preparation gained especially by early enrollees has offered an advantage in getting on the field early at Ohio State, though the winter and spring conditioning programs at Ohio State are a challenge unto themselves even for the top recruits in the country. Still, the benefits--like getting noticed by NFL scouts--are proven for those who can make it through the program.

Other Meyer initiatives, including “Real Life Wednesdays,” internships and job fairs, have helped set up Buckeyes for success even off the football field, lending even more appeal to Ohio State as a program.

All of these factors together, along with the continued success that comes with recruiting and developing some of the best recruiting classes in the country, have helped Ohio State to reload and build even more outstanding classes each successive year.

“This isn’t going to be the last time I have to compete against the best out there.”

-Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell, via Tim Shoemaker, Eleven Warriors

Freshman Tate Martell knows that he has a tough road ahead of him if he has any hope of playing the quarterback position at Ohio State, especially given the fact that Urban Meyer has already been confirmed as the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes. Even looking ahead to next year, when Barrett completes his final season of eligibility, Martell still has to contend with the duo of former four-star recruits in Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins, as well as Emory Jones, a verbal commit from Georgia.

Now Martell, a four-star recruit himself, is one of nine early enrollees entering winter conditioning with the football program as he vies for a chance at the backup spot for Barrett--a position that is wide open. He is not concerned about fighting for the starting spot next year before he earns his role for this season with Haskins and Burrow in the mix.

Meyer appreciates Martell’s competitive drive--something that helped the quarterback to not lose a single game as a starter in high school--which is Meyer’s top criteria for a quarterback recruit. “The way we evaluate quarterbacks, I understand is a lot different than others, but he’s a winner. That’s where he fits,” said Meyer. Even with his size, standing at 5-foot-10, 203-pounds, Martell was the No.2 dual-threat quarterback in the 2017 recruiting class and plays a different style than the other quarterbacks currently on the Ohio State roster.

Beyond Ohio State, Martell has aspirations of making an NFL team, and says that this will not be the last time he has to compete against excellent competition to earn his role: “...if you want to make it to the NFL, you’re not going to be competing against average guys. You’re going to be competing against the best anyway.”

LGHL Tyvis Powell claimed on waivers by the Browns

The second year player out of Ohio State is headed back to his hometown.

The Seattle Seahawks decided to waive undrafted free agent Tyvis Powell just ahead of the postseason, but his time without a team was shortlived. The Cleveland Browns announced they have decided to claim the Bedford native off waivers.

The 2016 NFL Draft class will go down in the record books, but one former Ohio State fan-favorite sat patiently as round-after-round went by without hearing his name. Never one to be caught up in negativity, safety Tyvis Powell held his head high and quickly juggled calls from teams around the league.

Powell eventually decided to sign with the Seattle Seahawks and join the Legion of Boom. While he didn’t see much playing time on defense in 2016, the Buckeye did get consistent snaps on special teams. He was on the active roster all season, despite only suiting up for eight games, and recorded three special team tackles in that time.

A favorite among Buckeye fans will now head back to his home state in hopes of holding down a spot on the Browns’ final 53-man roster. September is many months away, and Powell will first have to survive OTAs and mini-camps before even thinking about a final roster spot.

Senators Being Linked to Matt Duchene: does it make sense?

TORONTO, ON – DECEMBER 11: Matt Duchene #9 of the Colorado Avalanche skates against the Toronto Maple Leafs during an NHL game at the Air Canada Centre on December 11, 2016 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The Avalanche defeated the Maple Leafs 3-1. (Photo by Claus Andersen/Getty Images)

Bruce Garrioch never normally includes any Senators-related nuggets of information in his weekly ‘Insider Trading’ column that runs in the Ottawa Sun, but in this week’s installment, he mentioned casually that the Senators have “kicked tires” on Colorado Avalanche centre Matt Duchene.

Okay, so it’s probably fair to assume that in the hockey industry, most general managers do their due diligence on quality players who inevitably become available because they play for bottom-feeding teams, so in keeping this in mind, we don’t know that talks between Ottawa and Colorado ever progressed beyond a, “Alright, Sakic, what’s it going to take?” conversation.

Garrioch did single out Montreal and Ottawa as teams that kick tires, so maybe talks were more advanced than I’m giving credit for.

Whatever the case, the Senators showed or continue to show interest in a very good player, but as Garrioch reports, the asking price is high.

“Sooner or later, Colorado GM Joe Sakic will lower his asking price for centre Matt Duchene (and others) but right now it’s high because there’s heavy interest. Though the Avs are looking for up to five elements in return for Duchene, they’ll probably settle on three — a young defenceman, a high-end prospect and a first-round pick — if Sakic does decide to make a deal. “They can ask for whatever they want because they’re in no hurry,” a league executive said Saturday. “They can wait and they can do it at the draft but they might be able to get more now.”

Put in terms of what Ottawa has to offer, it’s safe to assume that the kind of asking price Colorado might settle for would involve some combination of Cody Ceci, a prospect like Thomas Chabot/Colin White/Logan Brown and a draft pick.

Duchene’s been a very good player.

Not only has he been one of the 14th-most productive player in the NHL relative to his ice time at five-on-five over the past five seasons (min. 4,000 minutes per HockeyAnalysis.com), but thanks to his elite skating ability, he’s someone who at 26-years old who still makes you feel comfortable about having a number of good years left in the tank.

That said, there are many things not to like about a prospective deal.

Since his contract calls for him to be paid $6.0-million and $6.5-million respectively over the remaining two years ($6.0-million AAV) of his deal, Duchene’s a relatively expensive add for the Senators. Having operated on a dollar-in/dollar-out basis for the past number of years, for the Senators to add Duchene, it feels safe to assume that the team would have to clear out more money rather than strictly absorb his salary.

With that being said, maybe a weakened Eastern Conference and the possibility of an extended playoff (and the accompanying gate revenues) will entice ownership to loosen the purse strings.

Beyond the money issue, the short-term nature of his contract would put the Senators in the same bind that they were faced when they added Bobby Ryan during the 2013 offseason. In order to prevent Duchene from testing free agency, the Senators would paint themselves into a corner and be faced with a situation wherein they’d have to acquiesce to Duchene’s contract demands to keep him in the fold.

Coupled with the sizable opportunity cost that would be used to acquire him, it’s hard to imagine the Senators using these assets to improve their lot at centre when it’s not a position of need.

On the surface, it does not really embody the kind of move that small market teams like Ottawa should make, but it’s kind of move doesn’t need to be made in a vacuum.

Some fans may balk at the idea of moving Ceci without an in-hand solution, but considering his play this season, his absence should not be too difficult to fill. Chris Wideman is already better than Ceci and there could very well be better alternatives on the market now.

Similarly, Duchene represents an obvious upgrade over every one of Ottawa’s centres and his presence could give the Senators the flexibility to move out another one of their other centres (Turris, Brassard, Pageau) to recoup some future assets or address a position of weakness. (As an aside, Turris also has two years left on his deal and an extension will have to be negotiated. If he’s looking to double his salary or approach an AAV of $5.5 to $6-million, will the Senators be comfortable with that? Mind you, if Duchene’s looking for a significant raise on his current AAV, hard pass.)

The crux of such a decision is whether the upgrade outweighs the cost. Without any accompanying moves, I have a hard time seeing it, especially when the team’s cap situation will be exacerbated as the team’s cap efficient deals expire and the diminished returns on the Phaneuf and Ryan deals are really felt. But, if the Senators can maximizing the value of their outgoing assets, maybe there is a series of deals to be made that can make this team better now without irreparably harming its future.

General managers should never preclude themselves from adding a significant contributor just because there are other needs to fill at the time. With Andreas Englund and Thomas Chabot being close to NHL ready, Ottawa’s long-term need on defence may be different than its short-term one. If they can find an inexpensive solution (or two) to address the bottom-four, all the better.

There is also no guarantee that better upgrades will become available this summer or that Ottawa will match up well as a trade partner if an exceptionally good upgrade at a position of need becomes available down the road. The summer market’s surplus may be ripe for better deals, but how the Senators weigh that against its short-term interests remains to be seen.

Adding Duchene alone won’t improve the team’s stock too much now or in the future. Hopefully management and ownership recognize that.

The Buckeyes didn’t just beat Michigan over the weekend. They also offered one of the state’s top recruits.

In Michigan to take on the Wolverines, Thad Matta and Chris Jent used the opportunity to check in on one of the top class of 2019 basketball players in the country.

On Friday, Matta and Jent watched sophomore standout Romeo Weems in action. Showing why he’s considered a high level prospect, the 6-foot-6 small forward scored 25 points, pulled in 12 rebounds and snatched away seven steals to help pace his New Haven squad to a 77-38 runaway victory over East Detroit.

Impressing the Buckeye coaches with his performance in the win, Matta and Jent offered the four-star prospect a chance to suit up for Ohio State on the college level. His second Big Ten scholarship in a week, OSU joins Michigan State in the pursuit of Weems.

The Buckeyes open their non-conference season on a high note in Columbus.

The 17th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team notched a solid, 12-6 win over the Paladins of Furman in Columbus to open the 2017 regular season.

It was a slow start for the Buckeyes, as Furman controlled the opening faceoff and scored just under two minutes into the opening quarter. Furman continued to control the ball early, winning the ensuing faceoff and getting two more quick shots off before Ohio State gained possession and took the ball on offense. The Buckeyes missed their first seven shots of the game and had three turnovers before they finally found the back of the net with 4:38 left in the first quarter on a goal by true freshman midfielder Tre Leclaire, who was one of the top-rated freshmen in the country entering the season. From there, the Buckeyes managed to hit their stride on offense. Senior attackman J.T. Blubaugh scored less than two minutes later to put Ohio State up 2-1 at the end of the opening quarter.

Ohio State did not let up as they controlled the opening faceoff of the second quarter and scored twice in the first three minutes on goals by senior midfielder Johnny Pearson and senior attackman Austin Shanks to go up three on Furman. Despite a Furman score with 10:14 left in the first half, the Buckeyes continued to grow their lead on goals from Pearson and, 19 seconds later, junior defenseman Freddy Freibott. Pearson then added his third goal of the half with 5:40 remaining in the quarter, putting Ohio State up 7-2 and causing Furman to change their goalie. Furman added a goal late in the second quarter to bring the score to 7-3 at the break.

Pearson continued his hot start early in the third quarter, scoring his fourth goal of the game 42 seconds into the second half. Ohio State controlled the ball on offense for the next few minutes, but Furman scored next halfway through the quarter to draw within four once again. After several shots by both sides, Leclaire found the back of the with 3:44 left in quarter for his second goal of the game. Freshman midfielder Ryan Terefenko added one more goal with 48 seconds left to give the Buckeyes a 10-4 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

Furman scored 1:06 into the final quarter to pull within five, but senior midfielder Tyler Pfister found the net shortly thereafter to put the Buckeyes up six once again. The teams traded possession of the ball until Furman added a goal midway through the fourth following a turnover by goalie Tom Carey. Sophomore attackman Lukas Buckley returned the favor for the Buckeyes to maintain their strong lead. Ohio State held onto the ball for much of the rest of the game to ice Furman for their 12-6 victory.

Despite their slow start on faceoffs (senior faceoff specialist Jake Withers did not win a faceoff until the end of the first quarter), the Buckeyes found their edge and controlled possession for much of the remainder of the game. True freshman specialist Christian Feliziani entered the game in the second quarter and began trading off faceoff duties with Withers, winning 6-of-8 in the second quarter to turn things around quickly. They finished the game winning 13-of-22 faceoffs.

Pearson, who led Ohio State with 20 goals on the season last year, also led the Buckeyes in scoring with four goals on the day. Shots on goal were 21-17 in favor of Ohio State, with Carey notching 11 saves on the day.

In many ways, this game showed what the future of Ohio State lacrosse could be, both this season following the loss of attackman Carter Brown to the MLL Draft and beyond. Though no freshmen started the game, Leclaire and Terefenko’s three combined goals show the kind of offensive firepower that can be developed over the course of the season, and Feliziani’s faceoff ability will be an incredible asset next year.

Furman, who opened the season with an overtime loss to Vermont, falls to 0-2 on the year and will face top-ranked North Carolina next week. Ohio State moves to 1-0 on the season and faces Detroit next at home Saturday, Feb. 11 at noon.
