After a force of nature (literally) comeback vs Kent State, the Buckeyes look to keep the momentum going.
There was thunder in more ways than one at Bill Davis Stadium on Wednesday night. Thunder from the inclement weather that ultimately ended Ohio State’s game with Kent State prematurely. Thunder from the Golden Flashes’ bats as they roared out of the gates to take a 7-0 lead. And thunder from the Buckeyes’ offense as well, as they mounted a furious comeback - aided by a grand slam from Zach Ratcliff - to come away with a 9-8 victory.
It was the kind of outcome that has been increasingly rare for Ohio State, having lost eight of its last eleven games since turning the page to the second month of the season, but could be just what the club needs to begin turning things around.
“With a team that’s been struggling, they may start questioning themselves,” head coach Greg Beals told The Lantern after the game. “A win like today means a lot more than just one win because it gives them that belief. It should rekindle that believing factor that we certainly need to finish strong.”
Kent State wore out starter Austin Woodby and reliever Connor Curlis in the first three innings, banging out seven of its eight runs on the night and 11 of its 14 hits. Staring down such a large deficit early, it would have been easy for the Buckeyes to resign themselves to another loss. That Beals’ squad battled back says something about the character of the guys in scarlet and gray, regardless of what their record might say.
“That believing factor, it’s critical because if you stop believing, maybe you start trying to do too much,” Beals said.
Ohio State will need that belief, and some of the thunder, to carry over to the weekend as the team hits the road to take on Penn State. With a 1-5 start in Big Ten play, the Buckeyes cannot afford to lose even a single series going forward if they hope to be making the trip to Bloomington to defend their conference tournament title.
Penn State Nittany Lions (10-17, 0-3 in Big Ten play)
Fourth-year head coach Rob Cooper has done a remarkable job in turning Penn State into a program on the rise in the Big Ten. After totaling 18 wins in each of his first two seasons, Cooper guided the Nittany Lions to a 28-27 record in 2016, the first time the club had been above .500 since 2012. But Penn State’s won-loss situation has fallen off a bit thus far in 2017, due in part to the team playing a significant amount of elite competition, though also in part to players flat-out struggling.
Penn State’s offense has cratered a bit this season, collectively slashing .230/.317/.339 and being outscored by an average of more than two runs a ballgame. But there have been encouraging performances by a pair of sophomores that indicate Cooper has things moving in the right direction from a recruiting standpoint.
Center fielder and leadoff man Jordan Bowersox is by far the best player on the field for the Lions. The Winter Springs, Florida product comes into the weekend sporting a .359/.426/.534 slash line, with team-high marks of 11 extra-base hits, seven doubles, and seven stolen bases. Bowersox is also second on the club with three home runs and 17 runs batted in.
Hitting two spots behind him in the three-hole is classmate Willie Burger. The team’s first baseman, Burger has a .290/.333/.462 triple slash, and leads the team with four homers and 22 RBIs, while placing second in runs scored with 16.
The trouble for Penn State has been the lack of production elsewhere throughout the lineup, as the squad strikes out nearly two and a half times more often than it walks and averages a tick below four and a half runs per game.
Of course, some of the offensive difficulties may have to do with the Nittany Lions playing catch-up a lot of the time. The pitching staff has been less than stellar, giving up more than six and a half runs per outing, sporting a 5.77 team earned run average, and allowing opposing hitters a .261 batting average.
The weekend rotation for Cooper has taken its lump after being solid a season ago. Junior Sal Biasi and sophomore Justin Hagenman have both seen robust increases in their ERAs, and the team is still searching for a third arm to emerge and really claim the final spot.
Biasi is 3-3 through his first seven starts, amassing an ERA of 5.01 despite having solid statistics that would seem to impart some tough luck. The right-hander has a WHIP of 1.20, a nearly 2.5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, almost 1.5 strikeouts per inning pitched, and an opposition batting average of just .179. The numbers just don’t add up to an ERA north of 5.00.
Hagenman, by and large, has the stats to back up his 1-5 record 5.22 ERA. A Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American in 2016, the righty has yielded a 1.46 WHIP and a .294 opponent batting average, and is tied for the team lead in extra-base hits allowed.
The Penn State bullpen has also had its issues, with no member of the staff claiming an ERA under 3.00, and several in the 5.00 and above territory. Right-handers Nick Distasio (5.48) and Dakota Forsyth (4.91) and lefty Taylor Lehman (9.00) have been the workhorses out of the pen, but have not found the consistency or dependability to shut down opposing offenses late in games.
If the Buckeye pitching staff and defense execute their gameplan and play clean baseball, the offense should have plenty of opportunity to provide the run support needed to win.

Buckeye State prospects are sprinkled throughout the rankings.
Yesterday the Ohio State Buckeyes completed their 10th practice of spring ball, and the highly anticipated Spring Game is nearing with each and every passing day. With so many reports of how well this young team is “jelling” and the competition that is being raised, it’s easy for Ohio State fans and the coaching staff to be excited for what is happening in Columbus. It’s expected to be a pretty typical Spring Game for the Buckeyes; that means some of the nation’s top players will make the trek to The Horseshoe and see what it’s like to host 100-thousand plus fans for a glorified practice. Until then, the Buckeye staff hopes to continue their success with their relentless effort on the recruiting trail before April 15.
247sports releases 2019 rankings
So many times in recruiting, it’s easy to see a prospect’s name and instantly associate that player with his ranking or star count. While there’s endless arguments on whether recruit rankings truly “mean” something or not, Urban Meyer has said before that if there’s stars and rankings, he wants his class to be atop of the lists. Fortunately for him and Buckeye fans everywhere, his classes have been incredible and loaded with stars.
Yesterday, 247sports released their first rankings for the 2019 classes. While the staff is mainly focusing on 2018, it’s never too early to start planning for the future—which Ohio State does so well with. A few of the names in the early rankings are not new to the Buckeye, as in-state prospects made the impressive list.
Coming in as the highest rated in-state Ohio prospect, Zach Harrison, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound defensive end out of Olentangy is ranked as the 16th best prospect in the country. With Larry Johnson’s endless success on the recruiting trail for his unit, you can bet the Buckeyes will be in Zach’s ear constantly in the coming years. Especially with Harrison being in Ohio State’s backyard.
Also receiving high praise and making the top 247 list for 2019 is Cade Stover of Mansfield, Ohio. At 6-foot-4, 206 pounds, Stover is currently the second best prospect in the country and was recently offered by the Buckeyes on an unofficial visit on March 28. With every single crystal ball favoring the Buckeyes, this one could be just a matter of time on a decision making him the first commit in Ohio State’s early 2019 class.
Rounding out the in-state kids, Steven Faucheux is currently the 44th best prospect in the country. Faucheux is a 6-foot-5, 272-pound defensive end out of Lakota West. After unofficially visiting on April 1, the Buckeyes have started out great with Faucheux.
Also making the cut: Jowon Briggs, another Cincinnati area native who comes in as the 71st ranked prospect as a 6-foot-2, 275-pound defensive tackle. With four players in the very early top 75 prospects for the 247sports 2019 rankings, it’s important for Ohio State to build these early relationships with Ohio’s top guys and fortunately, with each one, that’s exactly what Urban Meyer and his staff have begun to do.

Ohio State has been churning out first round picks at the cornerback position over the past few years, and now Denzel Ward is hoping he can position himself to be the next coming out of Columbus. Even though Ward wasn’t technically a starter at cornerback last year as a sophomore, cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs says that people should call Ward the third starter at cornerback last season since he was out on the field just as much as fellow cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley. In fact, Ward registered nine pass breakups last year, which tied Lattimore for the team lead.
Not only has Ward already displayed a high football IQ to be able to be in the correct position to allow him to register the high number of pass breakups, but he is also the fastest player on Ohio State’s roster. Now Ward is evolving even more as he heads into his junior year, taking on more of a leadership role. With a couple of very talented freshman cornerbacks coming in with the 2017 recruiting class, Ward will be pushed even harder to excel on the field, as well as to show the younger corners the ropes as they adjust to the college game. If Lattimore and Conley are taken in the first round of the NFL Draft later this month, it will give Ohio State four cornerbacks taken in the first round over the past four years. With a strong junior year, Ward might have a chance to make that five cornerbacks taken in the first round over a five year span.

There isn’t any question who will be the starting quarterback for Ohio State when the Buckeyes take the field against Indiana to open up the 2017 season, but one of the most entertaining position battles heading into the regular season will be at backup quarterback. In mop-up duty in six games last year, Joe Burrow threw for a couple touchdowns and ran for another. As of now Burrow is the odds-on favorite to sit behind J.T. Barrett on the quarterback depth chart, but the redshirt sophomore will likely face some stiff competition from redshirt freshman Dwayne Haskins and true freshman Tate Martell.
Even though Haskins didn’t see the field in 2016, he made a name for himself in the lead-up to the Fiesta Bowl with his work on the scout team mimicking Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. Martell comes to Columbus with plenty of accolades following a high school career in which he went 45-0 and threw 113 touchdowns. Many have compared Martell to former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel because of his ability to make plays not only with his arm, but with his legs as well. The competition for the backup quarterback spot this year could give Ohio State fans a glimpse into life after J.T. Barrett in 2018.

Ohio State may have landed highly touted offensive line recruits Wyatt Davis and Josh Myers in their 2017 recruiting class, but head coach Urban Meyer is hoping that he won’t see them on the field in 2017. While there is no doubt that Davis and Myers are extremely talented, Meyer knows that if they see the field as true freshmen, something has gone wrong. Last year true freshman guard Michael Jordan started for the Buckeyes, but that was out of necessity since Ohio State had some recruiting misses when it came to the offensive line.
In the 2014 and 2015 recruiting classes Ohio State signed 10 offensive linemen. Of those linemen, only Jamarco Jones and Isaiah Prince are starting. Demetrius Knox and Matthew Burrell are in the mix to contribute at guard, while Branden Bowen is a solid backup tackle. The misses come with Marcelys Jones, Grant Schmidt, and Kyle Trout, all of whom have already left the school or are planning to transfer. Even though there is still time for the 2014-15 offensive line classes to finish out strong, time is beginning to run out. At least if they can put together a strong 2017 season it will take the pressure off of Davis and Myers to contribute immediately, as well as helping Meyer to sleep a little easier at night.

Even though the final year of his NFL playing career was in 2009, former Ohio State cornerback Shawn Springs is trying to improve safety for those playing the game now not only on the football field, but also on the lacrosse field. During the final year of his NFL career, Springs was struck by how the helmet he was wearing was the same that his father wore while playing in the NFL in the ‘80s and ‘90s. Springs’ work has resulted in his company receiving a grant from the NFL to continue his research to try and improve on a helmet designed to reduce concussions.
The impact of Springs’ work isn’t just being felt on the football field. After taking his daughters to their first lacrosse practice, Rob Stolker of Hummingbird Sports was amazed that the sport was largely played without helmets. Stolker has teamed with Springs to create a soft-sided helmet for girls lacrosse players, which won’t injure those who aren’t wearing a helmet, but can also withstand a blow to the head from a lacrosse ball. While Springs originally set out to improve safety with football helmets, it’s obvious that his innovations could spread to numerous sports where head injuries are more common than others.

Nobody seems to think Ohio State basketball will get it turned around next season

Can the Buckeyes prove the doubters wrong?
The 2016-2017 basketball season is finally over, which means it’s time to publish those preseason predictions for next year.
The 2016-2017 campaign was a disappointment for Ohio State, unquestionably. The Buckeyes lost Keita Bates-Diop for the season due to an injury, lost to Rutgers in the opening round game of the Big Ten Tournament, and missed the postseason entirely.
But KBD should be back next season, along with JaQuan Lyle, Kam Williams, Jae’Sean Tate, and some new recruits. Will the Buckeyes get back into the postseason and begin rebuilding a program that has unquestionably been in decline?
Based on expert predictions, it doesn’t look like many are too optimistic.
The early ESPN Bracketology doesn’t have Ohio State even among the final eight out of the tournament, let alone in the NCAA field. Cleveland.com has Ohio State 10th in their too early Big Ten Power Rankings. So did Maryland’s 247Sports site. Land of 10 has Ohio State 12th. So did BTN.com. And it should go without saying, no major outlet has produced a preseason Top 25 with Ohio State anywhere near the list, or at least, not one that we’ve seen.
A cause for skepticism does seem warranted. After all, Ohio State has had a core of Lyle, Williams, Tate and KBD before, and hasn’t won anything of consequence yet, so why assume that this year is the year they take the jump? Marc Loving and Trevor Thompson won’t be back. The Buckeyes will be young in the frontcourt rotation again. And many other teams in the Big Ten either bring in big time freshman, or return almost everybody from teams that were already good, like Northwestern and Minnesota.
If Ohio State finishes 10th or worse in the Big Ten, they’re not going back to the NCAA Tournament, and then Ohio State’s administration will need to make a hard decision about Thad Matta.
Will that happen? I think it’s far too early to say. The Buckeyes have some roster space now, and they’re continuing to recruit some big name guards in the 2017 class. It’s also entirely possible the Buckeyes pursue a graduate transfer, perhaps to provide depth at either guard spot, or some experienced scoring somewhere on the roster. There’s a decent chance the roster going into next fall is a little different from what it looks like now.
But given how the team has performed over the last few years, they probably haven’t earned the benefit of the doubt. Ohio State basketball has some experienced players. They’ll have some talented younger players, like the Wesson brothers and Derek Funderburk. They have the talent to make a run in the Big Ten and climb back into the NCAA Tournament.
But if they do, they won’t find many press clippings predicting it this Spring.
