The Buckeyes scored four times in the final frame to beat the Nittany Lions, 5-2.

In a drastic role reversal, the Ohio State baseball team found itself on the right side of a late comeback on Saturday afternoon, using a four-run ninth inning to claim a 5-2 victory over Penn State on the road in State College.

Bo Coolen hit a game-tying home run and Brady Cherry delivered a go-ahead two-run triple to spark the rally against Nittany Lions’ reliever Eric Mock.

The comeback spoiled what had been an excellent performance by Penn State starter Justin Hagenman. The Nittany Lions’ sophomore right-hander finished with a line of one run while scattering ten hits in eight innings, walking two and striking out seven.

The Buckeyes may never have been in a position to win were it not for their own hurlers grinding things out.

True to form as he’s been for much of the season, redshirt senior righty Jake Post gave the Buckeyes a start on the mound that kept them in position to win the ballgame. Post went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits while walking four and striking out five.

Following Post, redshirt senior lefty Joe Stoll and redshirt junior righty Kyle Michalik gave Ohio State three quality innings of relief, keeping the squad within striking distance. That would pay off in the top of the ninth, when Hagenman finally exited the game.

Closer Seth Kinker worked a scoreless ninth to secure his fourth save of the season.

Whereas Ohio State couldn’t come up with hits with runners in scoring position in Saturday’s loss, going 0-for-6 in those situations, the team broke through early against Hagenman. A double down the left field line by Jacob Barnwell and a single by Zach Ratcliff, both with two down in the top of the second, staked the Buckeyes to a 1-0 lead.

The lead would be short-lived, though, as Penn State got to Post in the the bottom of the third. A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out, and a wild pitch tied the game. A sacrifice fly Braxton Giavedoni then plated Nick Riotto with the go-ahead run.

Things could have been much worse, with Post losing his command and walking two more batters to reload the bases. But a fly ball to the left-center gap off the bat of Alex Malinsky was run down by Tre Gantt to end the threat.

Ohio State narrowly avoided more trouble in the bottom of the fifth thanks to solid defense. Post issued a two-out walk to Christian Helsel and gave up a shot off the wall in right field to Ryan Sloniger. As Sloniger rounded first, Dominic Canzone barehanded the ricochet and fired a strike to second, nailing the runner and ending the inning before any damage could be done.

The Buckeyes threatened Hagenman several times throughout the middle innings, but came away empty. They had a runner on third base in the fourth, two runners in scoring position in the fifth, the bases loaded in the seventh, and another runner on second in the eighth, but couldn’t get the clutch hit they needed.

That would change with Coolen and Cherry’s shots in the ninth, topped off by a Noah McGowan sacrifice fly, as the Buckeyes reeled off the four runs to grab the lead and never looked back.

Game two of Sunday’s doubleheader is slated to start at 3:00 p.m. ET. Live streaming of the action will be available on BTN2Go.

LGHL Sam Hubbard at outside linebacker for Ohio State is a scary thought for the Big Ten

OSU’s abundance of talent at defensive end has led to some intriguing ideas in spring practice.

It’s not a stretch to call Ohio State’s defensive ends the best unit on the team. The group is led by reigning Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year Tyquan Lewis, but don’t forget the 6’5, 270 pound Jalyn Holmes, Nick freaking Bosa, and of course, Sam Hubbard.

It was surprising to see Lewis return for his senior season, but it was really surprising to see Hubbard not declare for the NFL Draft. He was regularly mentioned in the high end of mock drafts and he has the size/speed combination that would surely blow away scouts at the combine. But here we are and the Buckeyes now have four defensive ends who could feasibly star at any school in the country.

In addition to the four ends, Urban Meyer recently dubbed defensive tackle Dre'Mont Jones as a "premier" defensive lineman. Ohio State has used their “Rushmen” package in recent seasons to get their four-best pass rushers on the field at the same time, but now the coaches are exploring options to get all five of their best defensive lineman on the field at the same time.

This is where Hubbard’s freakish athleticism comes in. He’s taken reps as a standup outside linebacker in spring practice, and while he’ll still likely have his hand in the ground on the majority of his snaps, this new wrinkle in the Buckeyes defense could open up a world of pain for opponents around the country

Let’s take a look at why Ohio State feels confident using Hubbard as an outside linebacker and what we might expect from him in this package.

The ability to play in space

Hubbard’s experience in lacrosse and as a high school safety have helped him thrive in the open field. Most defensive ends don’t have the athleticism to hang with elite athletes one-on-one. Sam Hubbard isn’t most defensive ends.

As a stand up linebacker, Hubbard will be asked to keep contain just like he does as a defensive end. He’s proven to be more than capable of handling playmakers in space thanks to his closing speed and ability to not get deterred by blocks from tight ends and running backs.

In addition to needing to keep contain on run plays, outside linebackers will be asked to drop back in coverage when they aren’t rushing the passer. We don’t have a ton of film on Hubbard doing this, but Ohio State won’t ask him to cover a wheel route or anything too extraordinary. Instead, they’ll look to drop Hubbard in coverage in an attempt to confuse blocking schemes and take away any short passes. It’s what the defense regularly deployed with Joey Bosa during his junior season:

Why would Ohio State ask one of the best pass rushers in the country to drop back in coverage? Because it opens up the entire field for his teammates. In the above clip, Western Michigan slid their projection towards Bosa at the top of the screen, so they were left without enough offensive linemen to account for the blitz on the other side after Bosa dropped into coverage. Good scouting by the coaches resulted in Bosa dropping back directly into the quarterbacks “hot” read and the play was doomed from the start.

Hubbard might not demand the same level of attention on the line that Bosa did, but he’s more athletic and should be more than capable at handling some short-zone responsibilities. Of course, the real upside to using Hubbard as an outside linebacker is the chance for him to feast on one-on-one matchups when the Buckeyes decide to deplore their five-man defensive line.

What a five-man defensive line might look like

Ohio State utilized a five-man rush during their national championship win over Oregon:

five_man_line.jpg

The Buckeyes had Bosa line up in a “zero” technique directly over the center with Adolphus Washington and Steve Miller flanking him as three techniques. Darron Lee and Curtis Grant lined up as outside linebackers to rush the quarterback. Joshua Perry sat in the middle of the defense to watch for a pass to the running back or quarterback run. This formation in it of itself is troubling enough for opposing offenses, but the really scary part was watching the Buckeyes come up creative stunts to free up rushers:

Both Lee and Grant come inside on twists while Miller and Washington generate outside pressure. Obviously this formation was created with a different group of personnel, but we could see something similar this season with the following changes:

Obviously the new-look version of this five-man front wouldn’t have quite as much speed without a player of Lee’s caliber on the field, but it would also unleash five potent pass rushers, all of whom have proven to be more than capable of defeating single blocks. Jones, Bosa and Holmes have all had experience playing in the interior of the defensive line. Lewis and Hubbard would have a new position at outside linebacker, but their responsibilities wouldn’t be any different than if they were playing defensive end. Baker got plenty of experience spying quarterbacks last season and he can also provide help on the blitz when necessary.

Around NFL Draft season, we often hear about how a certain prospect could thrive if they find the right “system”. The reality of football is that no single system will continuously optimize the potential from a new roster. The very best coaches will adjust their system in order to get their best players on the field and put them in a position to exceed.

Ohio State has an embarrassment of riches at defensive line this season. Instead of simply picking the best four players and being done with the discussion, they’re approaching this “problem” as a blessing and already looking for ways to get all of their best players on the field at once. We’ll see what comes from a package that features five defensive lineman on the field at once, but the fact that it’s even being discussed is a great sign for the future of Ohio State’s defense.

The Buckeye bats were silenced in Happy Valley.

Every conference game the Ohio State baseball team plays from here on out is the most important game of the season. Each is a must-win. That may sound dramatic, but entering the weekend at 1-5 in the Big Ten, any hopes the Buckeyes have of defending their conference tournament title depend on playing near-flawless baseball the rest of the way.

Unfortunately, the scarlet and gray did not play to that script on Saturday afternoon, falling on the road to Penn State by a score of 6-2. Ohio State is now 1-6 in the Big Ten, and will need a doubleheader sweep on Sunday to win the series.

The Buckeyes were once again plagued by an anemic offensive effort, mustering just four hits and going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. It’s an all too familiar story for the club in 2017.

A lone bright spot was freshman Dominic Canzone, who hit his first career home run and extended his hitting streak to seven games.

Sal Biasi came out firing early for the Nittany Lions, striking out the first four batters he faced, and never faltered from there. The right-hander went 6.2 innings, yielding just an unearned run on three hits, walking three and striking out nine.

Ohio State starter Yianni Pavlopoulos had a strong first inning as well, but trouble commanding the bottom of the strike zone plagued him as it has all season. He gave up back-to-back singles to start off the second, then compounded his difficulties with an offline throw to first on a sacrifice bunt attempt by the Lions’ Ryan Sloniger. Christian Helsel scored the first run of the game on the play as a result.

An infield hit scored a second run and a walk then loaded the bases with nobody out. But Pavlopoulos buckled down and retired three straight to escape without any further damage being done.

The struggles would continue in the third, though, as Helsel and Braxton Giavedoni each collected their second hit of the game to lead things off. Sloniger brought them both home with a triple to the left-center gap, making it a 4-0 Penn State advantage.

The Buckeyes were the beneficiaries of a miscue themselves in finally getting on the board in the top of the fourth. Nittany Lions’ center fielder Jordan Bowersox dropped a ball at the wall in right-center off the bat of Noah McGowan, resulting in a three-base error. McGowan came plateward on a groundout by Dominic Canzone two batters later.

Pavlopoulos would exit the game with one down in the sixth, giving way to Curtiss Irving after yielding five runs, four earned, on seven hits. He struck out a season-high seven while walking only one, but took the loss in the ballgame.

Irving couldn’t shut the door on the Penn State bats in the frame. Bowersox delivered a two-out single with runners on the corners to score Alex Malinsky, and a pickoff attempt gone awry plated Logan Goodnight, and Ohio State was suddenly staring at a five-run deficit.

Biasi gave way to the bullpen in the seventh, and the combination of Taylor Lehman and Nick Distasio shut the door on any comeback efforts the Buckeyes may have been entertaining, save for Canzone’s dinger in the bottom of the ninth.

To salvage the weekend, Ohio State will need to sweep Sunday’s doubleheader. Game one gets underway at 11:00 a.m. ET from picturesque Medlar Field, with game two starting around 3:00. The second tilt will be available to stream live on BTN2Go.

The Buckeyes are not messing around in recruiting again.

It would be very hard for Ohio State to surpass the star power from the 2017 recruiting class, the best in school history on paper. But based on how the 2018 recruiting class is starting, the Buckeyes are certainly going to try.

The class has already started with a bang, as the Buckeyes have secured five commitments, including a five-star (defensive tackle Taron Vincent), and four other very high four stars, including QB Emory Jones. The class is currently ranked 7th nationally by the 247 Sports Composite, and has the highest ranking per recruit.

And now the Buckeyes are going after another five star.

2018 five-star linebacker Teradja Mitchell is in Columbus for an unofficial visit this weekend, per this Twitter account:

Can't wait to be in Columbus this weekend ️

— Teradja Mitchell ™ (@WhosThatNumber7) April 5, 2017

Mitchell also recently tweeted admirably about Ohio State picking up a commitment from Taron Vincent:

Geesh OSU making moves https://t.co/ILbpgeE915

— Teradja Mitchell ™ (@WhosThatNumber7) April 2, 2017

Mitchell, from Bishop Sullivan Catholic in Virginia Bech, is currently ranked as No. 2 inside linebacker in the country, has offers from virtually every major program in the country, including Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Michigan and LSU.

The Crystal Ball is still heavily in favor of Florida State, but recent predictions, including one from 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong and 247’s Alex Gleitman, are for Ohio State, so it would appear the Buckeyes have some momentum in this race.

The Buckeyes only took two linebackers in the 2017 class, and two in 2016, so Ohio State might look add at least two, if not more, in this recruiting class. There are several strong prospects in the state of Ohio, including blue-chippers Dallas Gant and Christopher Oats.

Another Buckeye big man is leaving the program early.

Ohio State will be down a second center heading into next season as David Bell will transfer from the program, according to Cleveland.com.

The 6’9 redshirt sophomore averaged 1.3 points and 1.9 rebounds last season for the Buckeyes, with a season high of five points in a game. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

A three-star prospect coming out of high school, Bell picked Ohio State over offers from Dayton, DePaul and Kent State. After a redshirt season, Bell improved, showing flashes of energy, but was likely blocked for major playing time by Micah Potter and incoming blue-chip recruit Kaleb Wesson.

The Buckeyes now just have two centers, and Wesson hasn’t played a college game yet. But Ohio State has three scholarships they could potentially use for the 2017 class, plus another for 2018. Don’t be surprised if Ohio State pursues a graduate transfer, JUCO prospect, or additional 2017 recruit to plug other holes on the roster, either in the frontcourt, or at guard.

Best of luck to Bell as he continues his basketball career.

LGHL Former Ohio State All-American Shawn Springs is working on making sports safer

The Buckeye defensive back’s pro days have long been done. Now, Springs has found success in the science of player safety.

“[Shawn Springs] immersed himself in the world of science and engineering, hoping to produce the next generation of sports helmets and other protective devices though technology developed by his company, Windpact.”

Former Ohio State Buckeye football star Shawn Springs, and what he’s doing after his pro days ended, Michael Phillips (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

He was an All-American in 1998 for the Buckeyes. Now, Shawn Springs has found a new avenue for his career: science. That’s not to say that Springs has left the sports world entirely.

Springs owns a company called Windpact, which creates sports helmets and protective equipment. The idea to start Windpact came from Springs’ days in the NFL. Springs noticed that the helmet he wore was similar to the one his dad wore in the NFL, which made him realize that things hadn’t really changed over the course of time to protect players’ head.

Windpact is on the verge of celebrating its sixth anniversary, and Springs has done some great things in promoting head safety in sports. Combined with Rob Stolker, a helmet has been created for women’s lacrosse — which at one point didn’t even require helmets to be used during games. This helmet can withstand a 60 mph hit from a lacrosse ball, and in the event of a collision, won’t harm other players who aren’t wearing a helmet.

The lacrosse angle has a connection to Springs: his sons play the sport at college. With the work being done by the Buckeye great, we could see a wider scope of helmets being made for all sports.

Springs is just another example of a Buckeye doing something to positively impact the world!

“These [games] have some impact on the NCAA tournament,” head coach Pete Hanson said. “We want to hold a high ranking and we want to hold a strong RPI.”

Volleyball coach Pete Hanson as the regular season comes to a close, Aliyyah Jackson (The Lantern)

Even though the regular season conference title is in the bag, Ohio State men’s volleyball is looking to ride the momentum to a higher seed for postseason play.

With two more games left in their regular season, the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes aren’t letting up. OSU travels to Lindenwood on Friday night and then to Quincy on Saturday night. Historically, the Bucks have dominated against the Lions and Hawks. The Buckeyes have won all nine matchups against Lindenwood; and the Quincy Hawks have had a tough time cracking a win against the Scarlet and Gray, as the Buckeyes hold a 52-2 overall record against them.

Nicolas Szerszen holds the best ace-to-set ratio in the country (.66) and Miles Johnson is a top five point scorer, averaging 4.91 points per set.

Szerszen and Johnson are part of the reason why the Bucks have been a force on the hardwood, as this season saw their win streak reach 42 games. The Pete Hanson coached squad has only lost two games on the season, and secured their second straight MIVA (conference) title.

“Running back J.K. Dobbins, receiver Brendon White and quarterback Tate Martell have had their moments thus far, [Dre’mont] Jones reported.”

Dre’mont Jones on what the new class of freshman are bringing to the table, Tim May (The Columbus Dispatch)

With the spring game just a week away, the highly anticipated class of 2017 gets their first real taste of being suited up inside Ohio Stadium. The 2017 class was the highest ranked in Ohio State history, and the Buckeyes could use some reinforcements, especially in the secondary and with wideouts, if they want to compete for a Big Ten title, or beyond, this coming season.

Jones specifically singled out Dobbins with praise, saying ““J.K. has really caught my eye...he just runs hard. He does not care. He just goes. I’m close to him, too. I kind of took him under my wing a little bit.”, per May. Mike Weber is certainly going to get the majority of the carries next season, but if Dobbins is able to spell him or provide an additional look, Ohio State’s offense gets that much more dangerous, and could give their developing passing game a little more flexibility.
