Discussing future schedules, Ohio State NFL Draft fits and more on our latest podcast.

With the recent news of Ohio State and TCU scrapping their home and home series in favor of a rare neutral-site game in 2018, and the addition of two games versus the Washington Huskies, the Buckeyes’ non-conference schedules are mostly set into the near future.

On this edition of The Hangout in the Holyland, Matt Brown and Colton Denning EMBRACE DEBATE™ about the Buckeyes future non-conference schedules, and whether they think the choice to play a neutral site game was a good one. They also have thoughts on scheduling group of 5 opponents, playing in-state schools, if the atmosphere in The Shoe is lacking (!), and whether they like the idea of a series versus BYU with the Buckeyes travelling to Las Vegas to play at the proposed new Las Vegas Raiders stadium.

The guys also open up the mailbag and answer your questions, including whether Tate Martell could potentially start at quarterback in 2018, why people hoping for a quarterback competition this season need to let it go, and why you should watch Ohio State lacrosse on their journey towards a national championship.

Lastly, they discuss the NFL Draft and the best fits for former Buckeyes, and how the football program has been able to establish bonds with teams like the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers (good franchises) yet not with the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars (bad franchises).

You can find the podcast on our iTunes page, and we strongly encourage reviews, comments, criticisms, etc. to help us deliver the best possible audio product. The Wolverines’ Oliver Jaskie tossed a gem, keeping the Buckeye bats scoreless.

On a damp, windy Friday night in Ann Arbor, the air wasn’t the only thing that was cold. Ohio State’s bats were in a deep freeze as well, as the Buckeyes were shutout by No. 17 Michigan, 6-0, in game one of this weekend’s Big Ten series.

The scarlet and gray, battling to keep their slim conference tournament hopes alive, fell to 5-11 in Big Ten play, 17-28 overall, and have now lost four games in a row.

Ohio State has had issues scoring runs for much of the season, and this one was no different. Michigan’s Oliver Jaskie retired the first 10 batters he faced to start the ballgame, and limited the Buckeyes to seven hits while throwing a complete game, striking out 14 and walking just one batter.

The Wolverines were paced by senior center fielder Johnny Slater, who went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and three runs batted in. Slater suffered an AC joint sprain in his shoulder last weekend against Rutgers and had been questionable to play.

Jake Post was on the bump for Ohio State, and has been the case more often than not, he turned in a solid start, though one bad inning plagued him. The redshirt senior righty gave up five runs on six hits in 5.2 innings, walking three and striking out five. Four of those five runs were given up in the sixth inning.

About all that can be said about the Buckeyes’ performance at the plate is that freshman Dominic Canzone collected a pair of hits in the game, pushing his hitting streak to what is now a team season-high 11 games. The team had just a grand total of four at-bats with runners in scoring position.

The Wolverines grabbed the early lead against Post thanks to an RBI double by Slater in the bottom of the second after a one-out single by Jimmy Kerr.

As Jaskie cruised, Post settled down and threw up zeroes as well. It wasn’t until he had retired the first two batters in the bottom of the sixth that he ran into trouble again. A walk and a double gave Michigan two runners in scoring position, and Slater stepped up, tripling to the right-center gap to push the lead to 3-0.

Post, already well above 100 pitches in the outing, was left on the mound to try to end the inning against Harrison Wenson. That proved to be a mistake, as the Wolverine catcher sent a 2-2 pitch sailing over the wall in left-center. It was 5-0 Michigan, and Post’s day was done.

The Wolverines added a run in the eighth against Ohio State reliever Austin Woodby thanks to a two-out double by Jake Bivens to the right-center gap that scored Slater.

Those runs would be more than enough for Jaskie, who went the distance and never gave the Buckeyes the slightest opening to get anything going.

Game two of the series is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m. ET on Saturday at Ray Fisher Stadium. The action will be available for live streaming on BTN Plus.

Between Miles Johnson leaving California to be a Buckeye and coach Pete Hanson guiding the team to back-to-back title appearances, it’s a great time to be a Buckeye volleyball supporter.

“I had other opportunities — Hawaii, Pepperdine — but I wanted something different,” the 6-foot-6, senior opposite said. “I visited and fell in love with Ohio State. I love the campus, the people, the seasons. This has been awesome.”

Ohio State volleyball star Miles Johnson on how he ended up as a Buckeye (John Maffei, The San Diego Tribune Review

While he may have grown up in California, Miles Johnson has grown to be a superstar on the Ohio State men's volleyball team. As reported by The San Diego Tribune Review, Johnson had opportunities to play on the college level at the likes of Hawaii and Pepperdine, but chose to come to the capital of Ohio.

Choosing to be a Buckeye has benefited both parties, as Johnson has helped the Buckeyes reach the NCAA Championship in back-to-back seasons. Last season, when Ohio State won the whole enchilada by beating UCLA and BYU in the tournament, Johnson picked up NCAA Tournament MVP honors as well as All-MIVA (conference) honors. In that tournament run, which took place at Penn State's campus in University Park, Penn., Johnson attributed a whopping 40 points, while attacking at .352.

This season, Johnson picked up right where he left off—and was an even bigger nemesis to opposing teams. He helped the Buckeyes soar to one of the longest win streaks ever in the MIVA en route to a 30-2 record. Johnson stuffed the box scores, and entered the NCAA tournament this season with 415 kills. That was good enough for him to bring home first place All-American honors.

In that article by John Maffei, Johnson said he wanted something different in college. I think it´s safe to say he found something different, as it´s not too often that you help pave the way for a program to reach two straight national championship games.

Speaking of going to the natty, how exactly did the Buckeyes get there?

“After a tight first set, the Buckeyes dominated the Rainbow Warriors from the service line and at the net en route to a 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 victory”

Jacob Myers of The Lantern breaks down the OSU men's volleyball win in the national semifinals against Hawaii

Last year in the NCAA Tournament, the Buckeyes had an epic battle against UCLA in the semifinals. This time around, it was Hawaii that stood in the Bucks´ way of reaching the national title game. However, the Warriors only stood in the Scarlet and Gray´s way for a short amount of time, as they were dispatched in just three sets.

The match lasted less than 90 minutes, but Pete Hanson´s squad showcased their strengths to the volleyball world (again). Johnson did his part by earning 9 kills, while Nicolas Szerszen led the team with 10 kills. Keeping up with the numerical pattern, the Buckeyes collected 11 blocks as a team. In comparison, the Warriors, who entered this game with an impressive 27-5 record, recorded just one team block.

Szerszen also tallied five service aces, and the Bucks had six as a team. Just like in the team block section of the box score, Hawaii could only muster a single tally in the service ace category.

With the win, OSU has a chance to capture the championship on their home floor on Saturday night. Once again, it will be a Buckeyes-BYU Cougars matchup for all the marbles. Unlike last year, the Bucks don’t have to travel far, as their home floor, St. John Arena, is the host venue for this year’s tournament.

The championship game is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, and will be broadcasted on ESPN2.

“To make that a reality, the Big Ten has decided that each member of the league will play a home game and a road game the first weekend of December.”

Rob Dauster on the Big Ten Conference rearranging the schedule in order to have the B1G Basketball Tournament take place at the Madison Square Garden in 2018. (NBC Sports)

Transitioning to the college basketball world, there was some pretty big news in regards to how the scheduling will work for this upcoming season. More specific, it’s how the Big Ten conference will make do with holding the conference tournament in the Madison Square Garden—the same place where the Big East conference takes place.

The answer is simple to make the arrangement work: the Big Ten would have to play the conference tourney a week earlier than usual. That way, there isn’t a venue problem with two tournaments happening at the same time. The issue if you’re a member of the B1G: You now have to play a couple conference games in the late part of November/early part of December—a time normally dedicated to playing non-conference squads and getting your team ready for the conference grind.

All of this would be happening around the ACC/Big Ten challenge, which will dictate whether the two conference games take place on Friday/Sunday or Saturday/Monday. Those conference games are important, as that’s how the seeding for the conference tournament is established. Now, teams that are just starting to play together will be thrust into some pretty big games that will determine who gets a bye-date in the conference tournament in NYC.

In the article by Rob Dauster, the reasoning for the conference tourney to stop by MSG is to increase the conference footprint (which ultimately brings in more money for the member institutions). The tradeoff is that the Big Ten, one of the power conferences in the college basketball world, would be playing their conference tournament a week earlier with the Mid-Major conferences.

Who knows, maybe this ideal is really good. The Big Ten wouldn’t be competing with the other major conferences for eyes, and have the spotlight on them. On the other side of the coin, the Big Ten schools that make it to the NCAA tournament would be sitting for a week. For teams that need the rest to get healthy, it seems like a good idea; for the teams that are riding a hot-streak, that added rest may do more harm than good. We won’t know for sure until we see the effects in real time.

Here we go again.

Ohio State wide receivers coach Zach Smith is nothing is not animated on social media.

Having picked Twitter feuds with opposing teams’ positional coaches — mostly in a college football recruiting contexts — prior, his latest target appears to be the controversial father of Lonzo Ball, LaVar Ball.

Ball famously recently unveiled a ludicrously expensive signature shoe under his own “Big Baller Brand”. The ambition is hard to knock, but the showmanship is a bit much.

Smith also thinks Ball ripped off his “Zone6” logo to do it:

What if you can't afford a logo and marketing design team?? Are you THEN, not a BIG BALLER? https://t.co/kIlvDadWWM

— Zach Smith #Zone6 (@CoachZachSmith) May 5, 2017

Zone6 is what Smith has dubbed the Ohio State wide receiving corp. Each player has gear (including dog tag style necklaces) adorned with a logo of Smith’s creation representing their brotherhood.

Has Ball (or any of his associates) ever seen the logo, or for that matter even heard of Smith and/or Zone6? We’re skeptical. But there is some unmistakably similar qualities to the logos.

Here’s the Big Baller Brand ZO2 one:

This is appears to be Lonzo Ball's new logo pic.twitter.com/u9tZ2ZKaPd

— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) May 4, 2017

And here’s Smith’s Zone6 logo:

@bigballerbrand literally stole Zone6 logo! @CoachZachSmith time to sue this man pic.twitter.com/Kvdh9iC4iq

A bit alike, but far from identical. It’s possible this is all just one big coincidence after all.

The Buckeyes will face Maryland Saturday in the finals.

The seventh-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team earned a 15-13 win over Johns Hopkins in the first round of the Big Ten conference tournament Thursday in Columbus. Ohio State, the two-seed in the tournament, never trailed the three-seed Blue Jays.

Ohio State opened up scoring with a 3-0 run in the opening minutes of the first quarter, with freshman midfielder Tre Leclaire starting things off for the Buckeyes. Senior midfielders Jake Withers and Tyler Pfister followed up to complete the run. Hopkins added a goal of their own midway through the quarter, but Leclaire found the back of the net once more to keep Ohio State’s lead to three. After another goal by the Blue Jays, Leclaire completed his first-quarter hat trick to bring the Buckeyes’ lead to 5-2.

Leclaire kept his hot streak through the second quarter, adding his fourth goal of the game 54 seconds into play. Johns Hopkins hit a shot to keep the margin to three before the Buckeyes broke out on goals by Pfister, senior midfielder Johnny Pearson and yet another by Leclaire. Ohio State traded goals with the Blue Jays to close out the half, with senior midfielder J.T. Blubaugh adding his first goal of the game to bring the Buckeyes; lead to 10-5 at the half.

Things evened out somewhat for the Blue Jays in the second half. While junior attackman Colin Chell scored the opening goal of the half, and senior attackman Eric Fannell added one of his own after a Hopkins score, the Blue Jays went on a 4-0 run through the start of the third quarter to narrow the Buckeyes’ lead to 13-10.

But Ohio State did not relinquish their lead, as Leclaire scored his sixth goal of the day early in the final quarter. Senior attackman Austin Shanks followed up with his first goal of the game. Sophomore attackman Jack Jasinski sealed the game for the Buckeyes, scoring Ohio State’s final goal midway through the fourth quarter.

Leclaire led the team in scoring with six goals on the day. Pfister had two goals of his own, and nine Buckeyes scored in total. Fannell led the team in assists with three on the day.

Senior goalie Tom Carey had five saves on 18 shots on goal. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, had seven saves on 22 shots. Overall shots were 34-30 in favor of Johns Hopkins.

Withers won 20-of-31 faceoff attempts on the day. He also led the team in groundballs, picking up 11 of the Buckeyes’ 37.

Next up, the Buckeyes face one-seeded Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament finals.

The Buckeyes need an upset to keep their slim Big Ten tournament hopes alive.

Nine games are all that remain of the Big Ten schedule for the Ohio State baseball team. Nine chances to defy what have become nearly impossible odds to secure a berth in the conference tournament at season’s end. At 5-10 in Big Ten play, the Buckeyes sit in a tie for 11th in the standings, but just two games behind the eight spot needed to reach the postseason.

It will not be easy, as Ohio State will spend the next two weekends on the road against Michigan and Iowa teams that are currently tied for third in the conference. But the Buckeyes have been playing an improved brand of baseball lately, even if it hasn’t manifested into wins. The club played Nebraska incredibly tough last weekend, and hung with Texas Tech, the fourth-ranked team in the country, in a midweek game.

One reason head coach Greg Beals’ squad has looked better of late is the maturation of this season’s freshmen class. A handful of first year players have seemed to find a comfort zone, and their playing time has increased as a result. Instead of lamenting the frustration this season has been dishing out, let’s turn our attention to a few encouraging signs for the future.

At the top of this list is right fielder Dominic Canzone. The Walsh Jesuit High School product has become an anchor in the middle of the lineup, proving to be the most dangerous hitter Ohio State has. Canzone is currently working on the team’s longest hitting streak of the season at 10 games, the second time he has reached that mark in 2017.

After a slow start to the season found him on the bench for likely the first time in his life, Canzone has come alive over the past month. A Louisville Slugger High School All-American a season ago, he leads the team with a .351 batting average and .474 slugging percentage, and ranks second with a .395 on-base percentage and 24 runs batted in despite being eighth on the team in plate appearances.

Canzone’s success recalls that experienced just a few years ago by Ronnie Dawson, who slashed .337/.396/.454 with four home runs and 25 RBIs in his first season in scarlet and gray. Dawson went on to be named a 2014 Freshman All-American and, last June, was the highest selected Buckeye in the Major League Baseball draft since 2009.

While Canzone may not be the same kind of athlete and has a lot of development ahead of him if he hopes to replicate that kind of success, the start to his career in Columbus indicates it’s a possibility.

Also making contributions as freshmen have been Noah West and Connor Pohl, who have split time at second base, and right-handed pitcher Jake Vance. West had the hot hand early in the season, only to come back to earth and struggle. He’s got a .232/.333/.357 slash line, showing some pop in his bat and a smooth glove in the field.

When West began to falter some at the plate, Pohl was inserted, and he has responded with a .271/.327/.354 triple-slash. While his defense is more of a work in progress, the duo of Pohl and West could be the future of the middle infield for the program.

Vance comes to mind due in part to the maturity and execution of pitches he showed this week against the potent Red Raiders’ lineup. Though he ran into trouble after just 3.2 innings, he struck out a career-high five and held one of the most high-powered offenses in the country largely in check.

The overall numbers for the season aren’t eye-popping (0-2, 5.60 earned run average, .343 opposition batting average), but Vance has competed and improved each time out. If he learns to command his stuff better, he should find a place as a useful arm for Beals as his career moves forward.

Michigan Wolverines (33-10, 9-6 in Big Ten Play)

Michigan enters the weekend ranked No. 19 in the country according to the NCBWA poll, fresh off a series victory at Rutgers, and winners of seven of their last 10. Head coach Erik Bakich has a team that is especially lethal at home in Ann Arbor, posting an 18-4 record. Only Illinois and Indiana (twice) have defeated the Wolverines at the Wilpon Complex in Big Ten play.

The maize and blue are the most complete team in the conference, period. They lead the Big Ten in batting average, on-base percentage, runs scored, hits, walks, total bases, and RBIs at the plate, and earned run average, opponent batting average, runs allowed, hits allowed, and strikeouts on the mound. For good measure, the team also sports the highest fielding percentage and has made the fewest errors in the field as well.

As a team, Michigan is slashing .298/.397/.424 and averaging more than seven runs per game. The Wolverine lineup can mash from one through nine, boasting seven regulars with batting averages over .300, seven with 20 RBIs or more, and five with at least 12 extra-base hits.

About the only solace for Ohio State heading into the weekend is knowing that, in all likelihood, two of those players will not be in the lineup. Sophomore second baseman Ako Thomas, the team’s leader in batting average, on-base percentage, runs scored, and stolen bases, broke his hand two weeks ago, and senior center fielder Johnny Slater, second on the team in extra-base hits and RBIs, sprained an AC joint in his shoulder last weekend.

That said, there’s still plenty for Buckeye hurlers to worry about. Most notably, junior third baseman Drew Lugbauer and senior shortstop Michael Brdar. Lugbauer is the cleanup hitter, and he’s among the very best sluggers in the Big Ten with 11 homers and 50 RBIs. Brdar, who hits one spot ahead of him in the three-hole, leads the team and places fifth in the conference with 57 hits, while adding 32 RBIs of his own.

Junior first baseman Jake Bivens, sophomore right fielder Jonathan Engelmann, sophomore designated hitter Nick Poirier, and Thomas’ replacement at second, sophomore Jimmy Kerr, have all proven themselves dangerous with a bat in their hands, and add to the stress of attacking the Michigan lineup.

For as good as the Wolverines have been at the plate, they can win games purely based on their pitching talent as well. With a trio of juniors in the weekend rotation and one of the deepest, toughest bullpens in the Big Ten, runs promise to be at a premium for Ohio State.

The rotation consists of a pair of lefties in Oliver Jaskie and Michael Hendrickson and right-hander Alec Rennard. All three have been workhorses, but Jaskie has been by far the most dominant, going 5-2 with a 3.77 ERA in 11 starts covering 59.2 innings, limiting opponents to a .229 average, and averaging nearly 12 strikeouts per nine innings.

Rennard and Hendrickson each rely more on command and pitching to contact, and their numbers are remarkably similar. The former is 5-1 with a 4.34 ERA and just nine walks issued in 45.2 innings of work. Hendrickson is also 5-1, with a 4.50 ERA, .244 opponent batting average, and a meager eight extra-base hits allowed in his 52 innings on the bump.

Behind the starters, the bullpen has been straight up lights out for Bakich. Redshirt junior closer Jackson Lamb has yet to allow an earned run in his 20 innings, saving nine games, holding opponents to a .167 average, and sporting a 0.85 WHIP.

Like Lamb, senior Mac Lozer has an ERA of 0.00, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out 20 in 13.2 innings of work.

Freshman Tommy Henry, sophomore William Tribucher, and junior Jayce Vancena eat up relief innings without conceding much to opposition, offenses either. None has an ERA above 2.60 or an opponent batting average over .225, with Henry and Vancena both striking out more than a batter per inning.

On paper, the Buckeyes have a steep hill to climb if they hope to keep the tiniest glimmer of hope for the postseason alive. Ohio State won all five meetings between the two sides in 2016, including two games to eliminate Michigan from the Big Ten tournament. The Wolverines will no doubt have revenge on their minds when the rivalry is renewed on Friday.

On Thursday, the Buckeyes put in work in the longhorn state.

Before you can run out onto the Ohio Stadium turf, you need to first earn an opportunity to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray.

On Thursday, numerous top prospects from the state of Texas did just that by receiving a scholarship offer to play for the Buckeyes, courtesy of the Ohio State coaching staff.

Want to know who the staff offered yesterday? Land-Grant Holy Land has your back.

Nebraska pledge nets OSU offer

Almost every recruiting cycle Urban Meyer and crew flip a prospect or two to the Buckeyes. With more than a year until he can sign on the dotted line, it looks like Ohio State has already set their eyes on a current Nebraska class of 2019 commit.

Nearly a month after giving the Cornhuskers his pledge, the Buckeyes have thrown their hat in the ring for four-star wide receiver Marquez Beason.

Ohio State now joins the likes of Tennessee, Missouri, Georgia, Purdue and Indiana as programs to offer the 5-foot-11, 173-pound Dallas native a scholarship since his commitment to Mike Riley and Nebraska.

As a sophomore at Bishop Dunne last season, the shifty Beason accounted for over 1,000 all purpose yards and 12 touchdowns for the 8-6 Falcons.

Buckeyes offer Williams

Beason wasn’t the only Bishop Dunne standout to walk away from Thursday with an offer from the Big Ten power Buckeyes.

His teammate and fellow 2019 four-star rated prospect Brian Williams also earned himself a chance to attend The Ohio State University.

Williams, a 6-foot, 185-pound safety, has more than his fair share of college offers currently on the table. After racking up 78 total tackles and eight interceptions last season, he’s picked up offers to play at not just OSU, but programs such as Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia and Stanford.

One of most sought after players in his class, Williams is considered the top safety, and 12th overall prospect in the class of 2019 at the moment, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

4-star TE earns Ohio State offer

Two days after picking up his scholarship from Ohio State arch rival Michigan, the Buckeyes dished out their own offer to four-star Prestonwood Christian (Plano, TX) tight end Austin Stogner.

— Austin Stogner (@austin_stogner) May 4, 2017

“Coach Wilson was at my practice and he told my coach for me to call him, and I called him after practice and he offered. It's a big time offer. It's a school that I will for sure go up to this summer,” Stogner stated to Land-Grant Holy Land after announcing his Ohio State offer via his Twitter page.

Watching his college recruitment stock skyrocket, the 6-foot-6, 230-pounder has picked up a long list of scholarships this spring. Some of the programs to beat Ohio State and Michigan to the punch in offering Stogner were LSU, Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Oklahoma.

A big target in the redzone, the sophomore hauled in over a dozen passes for around 275 yards and five receiving touchdowns. Not just a pass catching option, Stogner has also shown solid pass rushing ability on the defensive side of the ball for Prestonwood Christian. Playing on the defensive line, he accounted for 42 total tackles and eight quarterback sacks last season at Prestonwood Christian.

Quick Hits

  • Yesterday, Ohio State also offered three-star class of 2018 athlete Leddie Brown (Smyrna, DE/Smyrna). A current West Virginia commit, the 6-foot, 210-pounder put up over 1,600 all-purpose yards and 23 touchdowns as a junior at Smyrna.
  • Per Marc Givler of Rivals, Ohio State assistant coaches Zach Smith and Kerry Coombs stopped by American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla.on Thursday to check in on 2018 five-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. and others.
