MotS&G Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Running Backs

Post Spring Game Depth Chart: Running Backs

Spring-Game-2017-300x158.jpg

The Cadillac position took a back seat in the Spring Game, but they proved their worth and made their presence felt during the course of the game. The focus for the spring was to focus on working out the kinks in the passing game. The Running Backs found ways to get involved in the game plan making timely catches and runs when leaned on.

download-7.jpg

The Starter:

Mike Weber, the returning starter from a season ago proved why he is still considered to be the starter for the Buckeyes. He runs with anger and he is looking to have another successful season in the Scarlet and Gray. He looks good early on and he has improved with his vision and patience. He is still a load to tackle and with the improvements in the passing game, he will take advantage of opposing defenses that are attempting to stop the passing attack that looks to improve.

download-1-1.jpg
Running Back #2:

Demario McCall looked like he was shot out of a cannon during the entirety of the Spring Game, which helps him lock down the #2 Running Back on the roster. He showed the ability to sit in open areas on the field to make clutch catches and the ability to turn down field in a hurry, displaying his playmaking ability. He also has the speed to outrun defender on designed running plays, which make him another asset to the team. Versatility is key and he will be used to spell a tired Weber during games this year.

download-2-1.jpg
Running Back #3:

True Freshman and early enrolee J.K. Dobbins out of little known LaGrange Texas overtook Antonio Williams for this spot on the roster. He is another bruising back that is both strong and fast, a great combination to add to the dynamic in the offensive backfield. He imposed his will on the defense during the spring and he looks to be another lesser known prospect that could potentially lead to another diamond in the rough.

images-33.jpg
Running Back #4:

Antonio Williams and the rest of the Running Backs room will be contributing in some form for the team. Whether it is for scout duty or anything, they will be there waiting for their shot. Barring any injuries or anything negative, they will contribute. Until then, it is all just a waiting game.

LGHL How Ohio State will be impacted by the new early National Signing Day

The NCAA passed the new rule about recruits being able to sign their letters of intent early.

“Once again, take it out of the minds of a 50-year-old and put it in the minds of a 16- or 17-year-old. I don't want to speak for Gene Smith, but I speak for our coaching staff -- we feel very strongly about strong regulation and keeping the recruiting calendar as is.”

- Urban Meyer via Tony Gerdeman, The Ozone

On Monday, the NCAA passed a new rule that has been discussed about for quite some time: an early signing period for recruits. If you’ve been following Urban Meyer’s comments on the possibility of it going through, you’ll know why Ohio State’s head coach is so against it. Of course, the new ruling doesn’t just impact the Buckeyes, it will affect all of college football and future recruits. Essentially the rule states that there is now an early signing period similar to what we normally are used to during the month of February with all of the National Signing Day hype going on each season as commits send in their letters of intent to the school they had verbally committed to.

The new rule will allow a three-day period in December of each year to act as another signing day, locking in recruits that have verbally committed to put it in writing and officially become a part of that school’s signing class when it’s all said and done. The problem that coach Meyer has is that this occurs during recruits juniors seasons and for those prospects that the staff has been scouting but aren’t ready to send an offer yet, it takes away the chances of being able to land a commitment from a late bloomer who has yet to play their senior season of high school football.

So I don’t understand, whether it’s lazy, whether it’s… I don’t understand why there’s this big push. Now they want to have official visits in their junior year. There are some kids that don’t even have ACT scores. Their bodies are gaining 12 pounds. Why not move it back to their sophomore year? It’s bizarre. You’re going to see more transfers and more mistakes made in recruiting than ever if they keep pushing this thing up.

- Urban Meyer via Ryan Ginn, Land Of 10

With all that being said above, it’s fair to ask why the new early signing period is such a big deal. To make it easier to visualize, take Elijah Gardiner. The three-star wide receiver was originally committed to Missouri up until days before National Signing Day. He would eventually flip to Ohio State. But if the early signing period had been in effect, then Gardiner might have ended up with the Tigers because he likely would have agreed to signing early and might have ended up somewhere where he truly didn’t feel that he belonged. This also effects in-state recruits for the Buckeyes. Late-bloomers such as Brady Taylor, DaVon Hamilton, and Robert Landers didn’t flip until very late in the process and could have all ended up at different schools.

The new rule will most certainly change some of the recruiting landscape in college football, but Meyer makes an excellent point. It won’t be all that surprising if there’s a significant uptick in the amount of college transfers after this early signing period is put into place.

“[Post-spring power rankings] 4. Ohio State”

- Brian Hamilton, Sports Illustrated

Post-spring top 25’s are popping up all over, and the latest poll comes from Sports Illustrated. Brian Hamilton has Ohio State pegged at fourth in the country, behind only Alabama, Florida State, and USC. Hamilton mentions in the post that the emergence of Parris Campbell as a replacement for Curtis Samuel at H-back shows signs of promise but one of the biggest factors is that the Buckeyes return seven starters on the defensive side of the ball. J.T. Barrett being back for a fourth season is also crucial, with Kevin Wilson appointed as the new offensive coordinator, the offense is expected to be running at high efficiency in 2017.

Ohio State has their backfield intact as well with the aforementioned Barrett and running back Mike Weber who returns off of a 1,000-yard freshman season. Other Big Ten teams to make the top 25 were Penn State (fifth), Michigan (12th), and Wisconsin (13th).

The Dispatch reports he could be headed to Georgia Southern.

Former three-star defensive back Joshua Norwood’s time in Columbus appears over.

According to the venerable Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch, Norwood is transferring and is believed to be headed next to Georgia Southern.

Per the 247Sports Composite rankings, Norwood was the number 49th ranked overall cornerback in the 2015 recruiting class. He was the 47th best player out of his native Georgia and the 498th best player in his class.

OSU is turning over their secondary this season, but it never seemed like Norwood was legitimately in the mix. By starting over, he’ll get a chance to reboot his collegiate football playing career.

With the move, Ohio State should be at the August required roster maximum of 85. Potential additional departures are certainly possible after the Summer semester as we get closer to the start of the Buckeye football program’s fall camp.

Best of luck to Norwood on whatever’s next.

Metzer is expected to compete with Drue Chrisman for punting time.

On Monday night, former Penn State punter, Jake Metzer, announced that he will walk-on to the Ohio State football team. Rated as the No. 2 college-transfer punter in the country, Metzer has three years of eligibility remaining, and because he was never on PSU’s active roster, he will be able to compete for punting time immediately.

Honored to put my helmet back on for the Buckeyes. TY coaches Meyer, Coombs, Scheier and @KornblueKicking #GoBucks #Fab50 ⚪

— Jake Metzer (@getMetzy) May 8, 2017

Metzer, a Doylestown, PA native, didn’t see any action with the Nittany Lions as true freshman All-American Blake Gillikin took the starting duties. Now, Metzer will be competing against another highly-touted punter in Drue Chrisman. With Cameron Johnston now signed with the Philadelphia Eagles, the pair will look to fill the Aussie’s formidable shoes.

Ohio State ranked first in the Big Ten last year with a 45.9 yard average per punt, and a net average (which includes returns) of 43.1, which was 4.5 yards more than second-place Michigan. Johnston wrapped up his four-year career with a 44.9 yard average.

What’s next for the Buckeye?

The NFL hasn’t been as kind as hoped to former Ohio State tight end Jake Stoneburner since he entered the league in 2013. Since then, he’s bounced from team-to-team and has been signed on and off practice squads. The roller coaster rides continues; Stoneburner was released by the Saints Monday, leaving his future for the 2017 season up in the air -- and even potentially forcing him to consider life after football:

#life #biggerplan pic.twitter.com/WTf8AXk2Zx

— jake stoneburner (@jake_STONEYY) May 8, 2017

The Buckeye has had some playing time over the past four seasons, being active for 20 games in two years — one with the Green Bay Packers (2013) and the other with the Miami Dolphins (2015). He mostly saw snaps (9) on special teams his rookie year with the Packers, but was able to contribute on offense in Miami (121 snaps).

Stoneburner was signed to the Dolphins practice squad in 2014 but was promoted to active status for 11 games in 2015. He made 5 catches on 5 targets for 47 yards and two touchdowns. His first trip to the endzone was against Jacksonville in late-September, and seemed like a momentum-building start for the tight end.

— The Buckeye Nut (@TheBuckeyeNut) September 21, 2015

Unfortunately, he only earned one start with the Dolphins and fell off the map for the remainder of the season. He briefly — like, for two months -- signed with the Los Angeles Rams in the summer of 2016, but was released in August before being signed to the New Orleans Saints practice squad in September.

The Saints re-signed Stoneburner to a futures/reserve contract in January 2017, but had to make room for this year’s batch of undrafted free agents ahead of minicamps. Now the tight end will have to see if there is any interest from other teams.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Buckeye joined a team for OTAs or training camp, but with no practice squad eligibility left, he will need to earn a spot on a team’s final 53-man roster this fall in order to keep his NFL dreams alive.

The Buckeye coaching staff is working hard to replace a recent decommitment, and they may have found one within Ohio's border.

The Ohio State basketball program is in a weird place. The school is coming off one of the more disappointing seasons in recent history and the lackluster results are starting to effect the future of the program.

One of the key members of the Buckeyes 2018 recruiting class, Darius Bazley, decommitted from the program on April 26, and mentioned the uncertainty of the Ohio State basketball program’s future as one of the main reasons behind his decision.

Before Bazley’s change of mind, the Buckeyes’ 2018 recruiting class was looking promising—and he was the cornerstone of the class, currently ranked as the No. 53 player in the country. Now, the coaching staff is hard at work trying to replace the loss, and it seems they might have found their guy in a Columbus native, Jerome Hunter (Pickerington, OH / Pickerington North.)

Hunter is no stranger to Ohio State; he lives in the same city as the school and was offered by the program in August 2016. However, shortly after Hunter was offered, Bazley, a player of similar skill set, committed to the Buckeyes and communication with Hunter slowed down. But now that the Buckeyes find themselves with a second available scholarship and a need for a wing player, the school is looking to rekindle its relationship with Hunter.

Fortunately for Ohio State, Steve Helwagen of BuckNuts.com spoke with Hunter recently and confirmed that the four-star SF is still interested in the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes do have some competition for Hunter though, as he has received more than a dozen scholarship offers from schools like Michigan, Pittsburgh, Butler, Illinois, Penn State, Rutgers, Maryland, Cincinnati, Xavier, Kentucky and Notre Dame.

Expect head coach Thad Matta and his assistants to increase their communication with Hunter in the coming year. He is currently seen as the fourth best recruit in the state of Ohio, but his recent play has some wondering if he is in fact the best.

Elite SG visits Ohio State

Continuing with its efforts to rebuild, the Ohio State basketball program hosted one of the country’s top prospects in the 2017 recruiting class this past weekend.

Four-star shooting guard M.J. Walker (Lithia Springs, GA / Jonesboro) officially visited the Ohio State campus last Saturday. Ranking as the No. 25 overall player in the country and fourth best at his position, according to 247sports, earning a commitment from the blue-ship prospect would be an enormous addition for the Bucks.

2017 SG M.J. Walker officially visited Ohio State over the weekend, per multiple sources. Five-Star prospect.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) May 8, 2017

First reported by Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Steve Helwagen was able to confirm the report early Monday morning. The visit is Walker’s third official visit, with previous visits to Virginia Tech and Florida State, but the competition for Walker is strong and continues to grow as he is one of the last elite recruits in the class to commit to a school.

Currently, Virginia Tech is seen as the leader in the McDonald’s All-American’s recruitment, but schools like Georgia Tech, UCLA, Kansas and Miami are among those increasing their efforts in recruiting him.

Earning a commitment from Walker would be a much-needed addition to the class. After Dave Bell decided to transfer out of the program and Trevor Thompson’s decision to head to the NBA, Ohio State has been looking to add more members to the team.

Walker has yet to comment on a favorite school but expect to see more updates in his recruitment in the coming weeks, as the late signing period for the 2017 class ends May 19.

OTTAWA, ON – MAY 6: Tanner Glass #15 of the New York Rangers loses his helmut as Chris Neil #25 of the Ottawa Senators grabs him by his shirt and linesman Matt MacPherson #83 and linesman Pierre Racicot #65 skate to break them as Craig Anderson #41 of the Ottawa Senators looks on up in Game Five of the Eastern Conference Second Round during the 2017 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at Canadian Tire Centre on May 6, 2017 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (Photo by Jana Chytilova/Freestyle Photography/Getty Images) *** Local Caption ***

Two-minutes and 26 seconds.

Do you know what you can do in two-minutes and 26 seconds?

Well, you can’t get out of the Canadian Tire Centre parking lot in that time, but you can listen to the entirety of Johnny Cash’s cover of ‘Solitary Man’. You can also write a heinously bad hockey haiku. You can get through almost two and a half sets of 60-second abs. If you’re @brian5or6, you can masterfully design your logo in MS-Paint. Assuming you already have an account, you can post a hilariously lopsided trade proposal on the Hfboards.com forum. Or, if you’re Chris Neil, you can spark a referendum on how much of an impact you can have on your teammates.

Two-minutes and 26 seconds of ice time or in other words, five shifts, one hit, an accrued 12 minutes in penalties – which not only negated an Ottawa power play with the Senators already down two goals but literally brought noted shit-stain Tanner Glass to his knees.

The Senators would go on to win game five in thrilling overtime fashion, but rather than fete those responsible for producing the goals that culminated in a come from behind win, the 37-year old was showered with accolades for the role he played.

In his post-game interview, game-winning goal scorer Kyle Turris described Neil as possibly being the Senators’most important player” in game five.

It’s comically lavished praise, but since that light behind Henrik Lundqvist flashed red for the fifth time on Saturday afternoon, the Ottawa area has been flooded (topical SEO word drop) with opinions on how impactful Chris Neil is, was or can continue to be.

It’s groan-inducing to watch another instance that fuels a debate involving the diametrically opposed old school versus the new school, but here we are.

On one hand, Neil’s presence within the lineup is being credited for raising the tenacity of his teammates, who have been roundly outworked, outhustled and outmuscled in the series.

Game four’s lasting image of Tanner Glass laughing it up as he left the ice was engrained in the mind of Guy Boucher. Rather than let the Rangers agitator continue to get away with taking liberties against his players, Boucher elected to dress Neil and let him play the role of judge, jury and executioner.

There’s no question that the crowd rallied upon the actions of the popular enforcer and it’s impossible to refute how much of a stark contrast there was in the performance of his teammates.

Perhaps most importantly, if his teammates and coach are crediting Neil for elevating the performance of his teammates and having them believe that their skill guys are protected from liberties, who are we to argue with that?

In the same article that I linked to earlier, Turris characterized Neil’s penalty on Glass as being ”the best penalty I’ve seen anybody take in a long time. We’ll take that any day. It gives us such a boost. It gets the crowd going.”

Of course, when you’re posed a question by a reporter on how important the presence of a well-respected 15-year NHL veteran is in a pivotal game, what else are you going to say?

Many believe that Neil’s impact is being overstated.

The argument for that is pretty straightforward. It seems pretty convenient to believe that his presence was responsible for rallying the Senators from a 2-0 deficit without acknowledging that: 1) the Senators were in that hole to begin with; 2) the Rangers dominated the second period territorially despite the momentous Neil/Glass incident occurring three minutes into the period (note: the Rangers were undone by the uncharacteristic goaltending of Lundqvist); 3) after serving his 12-minutes in penalties following the Glass incident, Neil did not take another shift; and 4) most importantly, the Rangers took the lead back in the third period and were one minute and 26 seconds away from winning this game.

If Derick Brassard does not score that game-tying goal, nobody is even talking about Neil’s presence in this series and had the Senators lost by one goal, the outcry for Neil nullifying a power play opportunity in a pivotal game would be proportionate to the praise he’s receiving now.

More than anything, it’s pretty damn sad that Tanner Glass of all people can negatively impact the performance of the Ottawa Senators. It’s an indictment of the players and their performance in game four that necessitated making room for Neil. It’s not as sad as a Postmedia scribe’s developing a story on how badly the Senators need to acquire grit this offseason because of one playoff game, but here we are.

Maybe I shouldn’t be surprised.

It’s the playoffs and with the added extra day off between games, everything is put under the lens.

In one of the few sports where the rule book is put away and there’s this romanticizing of playoff hockey wherein lesser players are enabled and put on pedestals for taking liberties on their more skilled counterparts, we shouldn’t be surprised when a player like Glass repeatedly gets away with things and the opposition tries to take matters into its own hands.

Even as blissfully cathartic as Neil’s beat down on Glass was, it really could have worked against the team. From the mitigated power play to dressing a lesser player in a game where one injury to a forward would have essentially relegated the Senators to ten forwards, things could have gone sideways easily.

Fortunately it didn’t, but if the Senators truly believe that Chris Neil made a difference, awesome. Hell, if all of the Senators players believed in wearing vials of Erik Karlsson’s blood around their necks because they thought it made them better players, I’d be all for it too.

I just don’t know if I’d continue to go back to the Chris Neil well at the expense of some of the alternatives. It may have worked in one game small sample size, but that doesn’t mean it will continue to.

…………………………………………….

Filled in Glass’ face
Chris Neil credit for the win?
Sure, whatever works.
