The future gets brighter for the Buckeyes as Ohio State adds one of the best linebackers in the country.

Moments ago, Ohio State did something that is becoming a habit for this years recruiting cycle — they landed a verbal commitment from a blue-chip prospect. This time it was ‘18 OLB Dallas Gant of St. John’s Jesuit (OH), the 126th highest graded player in the class, who decided he will be making the short trek down to Columbus from Toledo to ultimately become a Buckeye at the next level.

Gant, the fifth best outside linebacker in the class, is a long-time target for the program and the Scarlet and Gray wound up outlasting schools like Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, and Penn State for his commitment. Make no mistake, this is a major pull for Head Coach Urban Meyer and Ohio State. That’s why we are going to take an in-depth look at what the newest commitment means for the Buckeyes.

Class reaches double digits

The commitment of Gant, who was primarily recruited by offensive line coach Greg Studrawa and linebacker coach Bill Davis after the departure of Luke Fickell, now means Ohio State has their tenth pledge in the fold. The Buckeyes join Baylor, BYU, Duke, LSU, Miami (FL), Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, and Penn State as the only programs to reach double digit commitments to this point.

Gant will look to shut down opposing offensives in Columbus with prospects like cornerback Sevyn Banks, defensive end Brenton Cox, safety Josh Proctor, defensive tackle Taron Vincent, and safety Jaiden Woodbey on his side. He will also spend his fair share of time attempting to slow up guys like running back Jaelen Gill, quarterback Emory Jones, running back Brian Snead, and offensive tackle Max Wray in practice.

Closing in on the ‘Canes

The inclusion of Gant moves Ohio State past Big Ten foe Penn State and SEC powerhouse LSU in the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings. The Buckeyes, who came into the day at the four spot, now sit at No. 2 overall in the rankings only behind Miami (FL), who has put together an exceptional class that already features 17 prospects.

With that being said, while it may take some time to reach the top spot, Ohio State’s current class of ten holds a higher average star ranking than the Hurricanes, and any other program in the country. Yes, even Alabama.

Finally, another Ohioan

Remember back on National Signing Day in February when Meyer and Mark Pantoni preached that they would like to reel in more in-state talent in the future? They had seven Ohioans in that class, including cornerback Marcus Williamson, who played his senior season at IMG Academy (FL) after transferring from Westerville South (OH). With the addition of Gant today, who is the second best player within the state, it gives them just their second Ohio prospect to make their commitment to the Buckeyes in this cycle.

Now, there is no cause for concern here, because there is about nine months until National Signing Day 2018. However, the reason to talk about it is because at this time last year, Ohio State actually had four in-state commits — Jerron Cage, Josh Myers, Brendon White, and the aforementioned Williamson.

This will be something to monitor going forward. As I said, do not put too much stock into at this very moment, but it is an interesting tidbit. The reason not to overreact here is because the Buckeyes are currently the 247Sports Crystal Ball leaders for six in-state players including offensive tackle Jackson Carman, wide receiver Meechi Harris, defensive tackle Aeneas Hawkins, linebacker Christopher Oats, defensive end Tyreke Smith, and running back Tavion Thomas. There is also a host of other Buckeye state prospects that Ohio State is recruiting, and the Bucks could always decide to offer a player later as well.

What’s next at LB?

After bringing in two linebackers in last years class — Baron Browning and Pete Werner — it seems that Ohio State is set on adding a few more in the current cycle. I look for three to be the magic number here and with their first linebacker joining the fold in Gant, let’s talk about some other options that could potentially pair up with him.

Obviously, the biggest name to watch is Teradja Mitchell of Bishop Sullivan Catholic (VA). The Buckeyes are very much in play here for the commitment of Mitchell, a five-star standout, who should be making his pledge sooner rather than later. The other program in a good spot for the 6-foot-2, 243-pounder is Florida State and Mitchell is fresh off of a visit to Tallahassee. We will see if Ohio State did enough prior to that visit to fight off the Seminoles pursuit.

Other names to watch include Winton Woods (OH) defensive star Christopher Oats. Oats, like Gant, is a four-star prospect in the class. Another in-state name to watch is Xavier Peters of Lakota West (OH). Peters, who does not have an offer from the Buckeyes at this time, could be a name that could garner some momentum in the near future depending on how things shake with a guy like Mitchell.

Not to be forgotten, Ohio State is also pursuing guys like Michael Harris of Tucker (GA), K’Vaughan Pope of Dinwiddle County (VA), and Solomon Tuliaupupu of Mater Dei (CA). Surely the Buckeyes are going to remain in the ear of Palaie Gaoteote as well— who has been committed to USC since February.

BOOOOOOM!!!

Urban Meyer and his group of assistant coaches have worked hard on keeping the gates closed around the state of Ohio on the recruiting trail. It’s ended up paying off once again.

With a number of programs from across the country trying to poach state of Ohio talent away from the Buckeyes, Toledo St. John’s Jesuit linebacker Dallas Gant spurned scholarship offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, and many other history rich programs to stay in his home-state and suit up in the Scarlet and Gray.

A leader on and off the football field at St. John’s Jesuit, Gant accounted for over 50 total tackles as a junior. After helping lead his squad to an overall record of 6-4, Titans head coach Doug Pearson had the following to say on what his star linebacker brings to the table.

“He has great length, he runs well, and is a very hard-working and humble young man. As he matures and fills out, he will still have the athleticism to play the WILL linebacker at the next level. He was voted captain as a junior, which is a very high honor at St. John’s, and Dallas is an outstanding student.” Pearson stated to the Toledo Blade.

Announcing his verbal pledge to Ohio State during his birthday on Tuesday, Gant, a four-star recruit, adds another highly rated prospect to the Buckeyes 2018 recruiting class. The 10th commitment for the Buckeyes, the 6’3 225-pound standout is currently considered the fifth outside linebacker, and 126th overall senior-to-be in the country, per the latest 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Already helping OSU out before he even reaches the college level, Gant’s commitment pushes the Buckeyes from fourth overall to the second spot, in the 2018 class recruiting rankings.

How could you have not seen this coming?

Say what you will about the Big Ten’s leadership, but they haven’t been afraid to take bold action. Some of those moves have turned out really well, like inviting Penn State and Nebraska, or starting the Big Ten Network. Others have invited a lot of criticism, like adding Rutgers, or saying stupid things like “we’ll move to D3 if athletes start getting paid.”

But most of the time, when they take a controversial stand, they’ve been smart enough to know that some blowback is coming.

But somehow, they missed the memo about Friday night football.

You may recall that last year, the Big Ten announced they’ll start to play some football games on Fridays. We wrote that this was a bad idea, and Ohio State shouldn’t participate. Other athletic departments followed suit, as did most fans on social media. A few seconds on Google will prove I was not the lone voice in the wilderness here.

But apparently, at a meeting with multiple state high school athletic associations earlier this week, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany said he wasn’t expecting the negative reaction. From our friends at Land of 10:

“The commissioner [Jim Delany] made the comment that Friday night games have been happening all across the country,” Tenopir, executive director of the Nebraska School Activities Association, told Land of 10 during Day One of the Big Ten Conference Joint Group Meetings.

“They did not expect the blowback that the Big Ten got on Friday nights.”

And by “blowback,” he means calls. Emails. Facebook comments. General social media hell.

The Big Ten countered that the shift to Fridays was to help give programs that don’t play in prime time as often, like a Minnesota or a Maryland, a shot at some additional exposure. But that’s cold comfort to high school athletics administrators, a move that literally anybody should have seen coming.

High school football, of course, is played on Friday nights across the country, and in most of Big Ten country, a flagship university also playing on a Friday night could depress attendance. And unlike Big Ten universities that get tens of millions of dollars in TV money, high schools actually need those gate receipts to balance budgets and pay for student equipment. Any cut is a threat.

Ohio did not send a representative to the meeting, but they’re against Friday night football too. And data suggests that Friday night games could hurt playoff attendance in Ohio too.

Given how important high school football is, culturally, to most of the Big Ten states, to say nothing about the health of their college football programs, this alone should be enough of a reason to oppose the move. But it also puts a big logistical burden on hosting schools (who now have to tangle with regular university traffic, which is so onerous that some schools have canceled classes over it), it robs teams of the ability to host athletes during the game, and it sucks for football fans who actually want to do other things on Friday nights so that they can justify watching 10 hours of football on Saturdays.

Delany is right that other schools have been playing on Fridays for years, but it’s not the same thing. Playing the occasional non-Saturday game is a necessary evil for programs who aren’t in major conferences and badly need the TV partnership or exposure. If you’re a fan of BYU, or Boise State, or a MAC school, you know that’s part of the deal. Same with even some power conferences, like the Pac-12 (which has struggled mightily with TV exposure) or ACC.

But the Big Ten is the most powerful, or second (behind the SEC), conference, and shouldn’t need to stoop to those levels, unless it’s simply a naked grab at more TV money; which this obviously is. And that’s frustrating, given that for all of the Big Ten’s problems, it certainly isn’t poor.

What is especially frustrating is that the Big Ten didn’t plan for this, or really see it coming. I don’t think Delany, or the rest of the Big Ten administrators, are dumb people. The league’s success, from financial to academic to athletic, isn’t by accident, and even though Delany can serve as some sort of super villain avatar for all that’s wrong in college sports, it isn’t completely deserved.

But they’re not great at PR or messaging their decisions. Hopefully, league officials listen to this feedback and learn from this episode, and don’t forget what makes their product, and this sport, so great to begin with. If they start to lose touch with their base fans and supporters, this entire operation could come tumbling down, especially if that TV fire hose starts to dry up a bit.

One of the country’s top outside linebackers could commit to the Buckeyes today.

It may be early but Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class is shaping up to be just as decorated as its historic 2017 haul. The Buckeyes have already been able to secure commitments from nine of the country’s top recruits and the class is currently seen as the fourth best in the country, according to 247Sports.com

With all of this success, the team has yet to acquire a linebacker in the class, but is looking to change that. The program is hoping this change comes in outside linebacker Dallas Gant (Toledo, OH / St. John’s Jesuit).

The Ohio-native is set to announce his decision later today in his high school theater at 3:30 p.m. eastern time.

My commitment announcement this Tuesday will be at 3:30 in the McCade Theatre at my school, St. John's. Everyone is welcome to attend!

— Dallas Gant (@dallas_gant) May 10, 2017

Gant is not only one of the top recruits in Ohio, he is also viewed as one of the top OLBs in the country. The four-star backer is currently seen as the No. 5 OLB in the country, the No. 4 recruit in Ohio and the No. 126 in the country, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

He earlier released his top five schools which consisted of Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State and Penn State; however, it appears that his decision will come down to Ohio State and Notre Dame.

Top 5 top 5 top 5... pic.twitter.com/Rr0RONDVA7

— Dallas Gant (@dallas_gant) April 4, 2017

Just last week, Gant spoke to Bill Kurelic of BuckNuts and talked about what he liked about each of his top schools. While he said he liked Ohio State’s ability to win and their ability to produce NFL talent, he also spoke highly of the Irish saying, “They are kind of like my school. They have great tradition.”

Fast-forward a week to today and the Buckeyes are again being viewed as the favorite. Kurelic went as far as to officially pencil the team in for his Crystal Ball selection.

Gant would make a huge addition to the 2018 class, so make sure to keep up with Land-Grant Holy Land today as we prepare for his announcement.

Ohio State offers elite OT

One of Urban Meyer’s best traits when it comes to recruiting is his ability to recognize talent early on. He is hoping to strike gold again, as the program offered 2019 offensive tackle Michael Tarquin (Belleview, FL / Belleview) yesterday.

Buckeye defensive assistant coach, Kerry Coombs tweeted that he was “planting flags” in the Sunshine State Monday, and what followed was an early offer for Tarquin.

Lot of flag planting going on in the sunshine state today! #OrlandoandJacksonville! #lotofgreatplayersandcoachesdownhere #addingtotheUnit!

— Kerry Coombs (@OsuCoachCoombs) May 15, 2017

Very honored and excited to have received a scholarship offer from THE Ohio State University! Thank you Coach Meyer and Coach Studrawa. #B1G pic.twitter.com/BDot0RyPV8

— Michael Tarquin (@Mike_Tarquin70) May 15, 2017

Tarquin has only played two seasons of high school football, but that hasn’t stopped him from racking up offers from some of the top schools in the country, including Clemson, Michigan State, Miami, Auburn, Louisville and now the Buckeyes.

As it stands today, hometown school Miami has the edge over the field, but it is early and Ohio State’s recurring success cannot be ignored by anyone.

Because Tarquin is so early into his football career, recruiting databases don’t have a full grasp on him yet. Currently though, 247Sports has him slated as the 13th best OT in the country and the No. 103 overall recruit in 2019.

Only time will tell in his recruitment, but Meyer knows better than anyone, you can never have too many ‘slobs’ up front with a mobile QB, so expect the Buckeyes to continue pursuing him.

Ohio State a contender for a 4-star TE

Another position of need in Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class that has yet to be addressed is the tight end position. The coaching staff decided to put the position on the back-burner in last year’s class, so it comes as no surprise the position is one of great focus this year.

Fortunately, their work seems to be paying off as one of the country’s best has confirmed the school as one of his top choices. Four-star TE Leonard Taylor (Springfield, OH / Springfield) participated in Rival’s 3 Stripe Camp on Sunday in Columbus and Josh Helmholdt of Rivals.com had an opportunity to speak to Taylor.

Taylor told Helmholdt that the Buckeyes are one of his top schools and he is looking to visit the school in the coming months.

Seen as the No. 12 TE in the country and the tenth best recruit in the Ohio, the Buckeyes’ biggest competition for Taylor currently appears to be Kentucky. The biggest difference in the schools recruiting pitches is that the Wildcats are recruiting him solely to be a TE, while the Buckeyes are unsure if they want him to play at TE or DE.

Standing at 6-foot-5.5 and weighing 246 pounds, Taylor has the size and athleticism to excel at both positions. Look for both schools to continue to pursue Taylor who has yet to hint at an announcement date.

The Big Ten’s new TV deal means the biggest game of the year gets new digs.

When the Big Ten signed their fancy new TV deal with Fox, we knew that many of the conference’s biggest games would be moving to the league’s new partner. And now, we have official word that the absolute biggest game will be among them.

Fox confirmed that Ohio State-Michigan will move to the network this season during their upfronts, according to Awful Announcing. Both Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer were interviewed by the network to help promote the brand, and in the process, it looks like some other big games were leaked too.

Looks like FOX is officially getting the Michigan-Ohio State game this year & some other huge matchups. pic.twitter.com/EPC4atvYbz

— Jordan Strack (@JordanStrack) May 15, 2017

If that image is correct, the Penn State at Ohio State game will also be broadcast on Fox, along with some of the other biggest games this season, like Texas and USC.

The Big Ten still has has a deal with ESPN to broadcast some of their games, so Ohio State won’t be leaving the Worldwide Leader for Fox and the Big Ten Network entirely. But Fox didn’t pay top dollar ($240 million a year for the next six years) just for the privilege of broadcasting Purdue and Minnesota.

The Game picked up a crazy-high rating last year, cracking a 10.4 overnight rating on ABC. That’s probably not going to happen again, but it’s not like Fox is a hard network to find. Plenty of folks will be able to watch the game.

What station the game will be on is something that matters a great deal to some people, but as long as Ohio State continues to have multiple games broadcast on ESPN, having a few games, even really big ones, moved to Fox shouldn’t hurt the program. And besides, they’re going to make a stupid amount of money on this deal.

And if that means we get Gus Johnson screaming about Ohio State-Michigan, well, that’s pretty good too. As long as the picture quality is strong enough to verify that the next Spot is Good, I’m sure things will be fine.

It's worked out for Ryan Shazier and Darron Lee. Baker is just next in line.

“Jerome’s a very talented young man, and I think he’s got a big upside. The potential is there, but potential is a very dangerous word. It’s got to be backed up by work, and he’s working hard right now.”

-Ohio State linebackers coach Bill Davis, via Ben Axelrod, Land of 10

Junior linebacker Jerome Baker’s size and skillset are a far cry from the likes of former Buckeye greats like A.J. Hawk or Andy Katzenmoyer. Standing at just 6-foot-1, 225-pounds, he looks more like a safety. But, in many ways, he appears a lot more like the “modern” linebacker that has become more commonplace in Columbus, especially since 2014 when former defensive coordinator Chris Ash utilized former defensive back (and quarterback) Darron Lee as a highly-versatile linebacker. Lee, however, was not the first. Just two years before Lee was taken as a first-round selection by the Jets, Ryan Shazier was picked up with the 15th-overall pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2014 NFL Draft. Both Lee and Shazier were considered to be undersized for the linebacker position, with the athleticism of a defensive back. However, with their continued success moving from college to the pros, the smaller and more nimble players have had a proven impact on the linebacking corps at Ohio State.

Baker has been credited by ESPN’s Mel Kiper as being “not a traditional linebacker. But he’s fast, he can cover pass-catchers, rush the passer and is always in the middle of the action.”

Last season, Baker was still relatively unknown when he returned an interception for a touchdown against Oklahoma in the third game of the season. Baker ended his sophomore campaign with 83 tackles, 3.5 sacks and one more interception.

This spring, Baker has already shifted from strong side linebacker to the weak side, indicating his already existing versatility on the field. And while the potential is there, according to Bill Davis, his position coach, Baker has a lot of work to do--work that he is already putting in. “It’s that same mindset,” he said. “Just go hard, make everyone better and help our team win.”

“Ohio State has learned a hard lesson about putting too much stock in recruiting class rankings.”

-Zac Al-Khateeb, SportingNews

It was already a tough season for the Ohio State Buckeyes men’s basketball team. With a severely underwhelming performance, including winning just 17 games and missing out on the NCAA Tournament (and the NIT, to boot) for the second-straight year, the arrest of sophomore guard JaQuan Lyle Saturday for a myriad of charges capped off a painful period for Thad Matta’s squad--or at least what is left of it.

Lyle was the sole-remaining player from Matta’s fifth-ranked recruiting class in 2015. Following his arrest over the weekend, it was revealed that the guard had actually quit the team last month. He was one of five four-star recruits brought in that season, with four of the incoming freshmen ranked in the top-100 in the country.

The other four players all left after, or during, their true freshman season in 2015-16. Shooting guard Austin Grandstaff transferred in December 2015 after just 10 games. His family claimed at the time that they were unhappy with his minutes. He will be eligible to play after the first half of the season.

Center Daniel Giddens and guard A.J. Harris announced their plans to transfer following the season, with Giddens moving on to Alabama and Harris, a Dayton native, heading to New Mexico State. Forward Mickey Mitchell, who missed the first 11 games of last season, also announced that he is leaving Columbus following the season, with plans to head to Arizona State. Giddens, Harris and Mitchell will all have to sit out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

Lyle stuck around for the past season, averaging 11.4 points and 4.6 rebounds on the disappointing season. For the first time under Matta, the Buckeyes failed to reach 20 wins, and the squad started conference play with an 0-4 mark, ultimately finishing the Big Ten season 7-11.

“Both Ohio State and Michigan showed how great our programs are today. It was awesome to watch both programs lay it out the way we did event after event. We were really fortunate to grab the victory in the First Varsity Eight. It’s a great day to be a Buckeye.”

The Ohio State Buckeyes women’s rowing team continued their dynasty at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis over the weekend, taking home its fifth-straight Big Ten Rowing Championship. It is the program’s eighth-overall conference championship.

The squad earned 180 points on the day with three first place finishes in the first varsity eight, second varsity four and second novice eight categories, just edging out second-place Michigan who tallied 179 points. Wisconsin came in third with 126 points, while Iowa and Indiana tied with 106 for the tournament.

In fact, it took until the final race of the day--the first varsity eight--for the Buckeyes to earn their victory. The team entered the race trailing Michigan, who had previously taken home gold in the first varsity four and second varsity eight, by an eight-point margin. Ohio State had earned silver in every other race on the morning to remain close behind the Wolverines, who they ultimately defeated by less than three seconds in the first varsity eight race.

After taking home gold yesterday, the second varsity four capped an undefeated 31-0 overall record, including a 9-0 mark in 2017, once again edging second-place Michigan for the title.

The Buckeyes also earned two conference tournament records over the weekend. Their second varsity four time was a championship best, while their first varsity eight time was the third-best time in Big Ten Championship history.

Ohio State also dominated conference awards, with three rowers, including Ida Kruse, Stephanie Williams and Rachel Engel, named First Team All-Big Ten--the most of any school. The Buckeyes also had two team members make the second team (Aina Cid and Cassandra Johnson) and had one honoree (Abigail Ernst) of the conference’s Sportsmanship Award.

The NCAA women’s rowing championships are scheduled to be held later this month at Lake Mercer in New Jersey.
