The Buckeyes used a superb performance on the mound by Connor Curlis to notch a 7-4 win over the Hoosiers.

The final series of the season for Ohio State baseball got underway with a 7-4 win over Indiana on Thursday night at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus. The Buckeyes got great starting pitching and timely hitting to improve their mark in Big Ten play to 8-14.

While 2017 has not been kind to Ohio State, this game served to highlight why the feeling around the program isn’t all doom and gloom. Several key contributions were received by the Buckeyes from underclassmen, the players that head coach Greg Beals will be building around moving into next season and beyond.

Highlighting those who Ohio State will be using as building blocks is right fielder Dominic Canzone. A leading contender for Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Canzone extended his hitting streak to seven games and drove in a pair of runs.

Fellow freshman Connor Pohl added a three-hit night and scored a run as well. The Arcanum, Ohio product came to the program as a preferred walk-on, but has hit his way into regular playing time.

Sophomore Brady Cherry is a third underclass bat with potential in the middle of the order who has matured. He went 2-for-3 on the night with a double, a walk, and a run scored while serving as the designated hitter.

Another one of the player’s who has grown by leaps and bounds over the course of the season has been sophomore left-hander Connor Curlis. Getting the game one start in the series, Curlis came out and threw a gem, starting the game by tossing 4.1 perfect innings. He left after a career-high seven innings, having yielded just two runs on four hits, walking one and recording four strikeouts, picking up the win to improve to 5-3 on the season.

The Buckeyes drew first blood, putting a run on the board against Hoosiers’ starter Jonathan Stiever in the bottom of the first. Tre’ Gantt singled to lead things off, stole second, advanced to third on an errant pickoff attempt, and then came home on a Canzone RBI groundout.

Curlis set down the first 13 batters he faced, showing good tempo and solid command on the mound against a dangerous Indiana lineup. But that danger caught up to him with one out in the fifth when Craig Dedelow hit his team-leading 14th home run for the Hoosiers, tying things up.

That seemed to take the edge off for the visitors, who followed the blast with a single and a walk. But the Ohio State southpaw buckled down, getting a pop out and routine fly out to escape without further damage.

Stiever meanwhile settled in, retiring 13 out of the next 15 batters he faced after Cherry’s double in the first inning. The only time the Buckeyes threatened was in the bottom of the fourth when a Zach Ratcliff walk and Pohl single gave them runners on the corners with two down, but the clutch hit did not come to bring the run home.

The clutch knock did come in the bottom of the sixth, when senior co-captain Jalen Washington led off with a triple to the gap in right-center. Canzone knocked him in with his second RBI groundout of the game, putting Ohio State back on top 2-1.

The Buckeyes weren’t done applying pressure, either, as Cherry, Ratcliff, and Pohl racked up three consecutive singles to load the bases. Shea Murray, another senior, put together a solid at-bat after that, lacing a double down the left field line to plate Cherry and Ratcliff, extending the lead to three and ending the outing for Stiever.

Jacob Barnwell, the club’s sophomore catcher, greeted Indiana reliever Kade Kryzsko with a single that brought home Pohl, and fellow soph Andrew Fishel smacked a base hit of his own to score Murray, making it a 6-1 ballgame.

Dedelow did his best to try to keep the Hoosiers within striking distance, crushing his second homer of the game deep beyond the wall in right-center to cut the deficit to four. Aside from Dedelow’s dingers and a pair of singles by Logan Sowers, Indiana had no answer for Curlis on this night.

Curlis’ classmate Ryan Feltner took over in the eighth. After a forgettable season in which he struggled to harness his command, the big right-hander struck out the side, showing the potential that made him a preseason player to watch in the conference for the 2018 MLB draft according to Baseball America.

Ohio State added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth thanks in large part to Gantt’s legs. After pitcher Cameron Beauchamp fired an errant pickoff attempt with two outs, the Buckeyes’ leadoff man scampered all the way to third. He would score when Washington lined a single into right field just over the leaping second baseman, making it 7-2.

Feltner stayed on to pitch the ninth, and after retiring the first two hitters, gave up a solo shot down the right field line to Sowers and a single to Matt Gorski. Gorski would score on a throwing error by Pohl to make it 7-4, and Beals brought on Seth Kinker in relief. The junior righty closed things out, striking out Austin Cangelosi on three pitches.

The second game of the series is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. ET first pitch on Friday evening. Ohio State will be looking to close out just its second Big Ten series win of the season, and first since early April. Redshirt senior right-hander Jake Post will be on the bump for the Buckeyes against Indiana’s Pauly Milto.

College Football Playoff (2016-2017 Season)

Penn State AD on College Football Playoff: “I think Ohio State should’ve gone”

617311260-e1495142857399.jpg

Perhaps the most heated debate in 2016 — well, at least on the gridiron — was whether Ohio State or Penn State should have been in the College Football Playoff. Countless hours were devoted to discussing the finer points of the Nittany Lions’ head-to-head victory between the two, the amount of talent on both sides or the Buckeyes’ impressive strength of schedule.

In the end, the CFP Selection Committee slotted OSU in the No. 3 spot to play eventual national champion Clemson but debate continues to rage in several hamlets from State College to Columbus over whether that was the right choice. According to Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour though, the seeding was fine by here even if it cost her team a trip to the Fiesta Bowl semifinal.

“We’re the [Big Ten] champions and didn’t go,” Barbour told reporters at Big Ten spring meetings, according to Landof10.com. “I think Ohio State should’ve gone. I have no problem with the fact Ohio State went.

“In fact, you know, we were arguably the best league in the country and we didn’t go. So let’s try to figure out why and what is there. [Whether] it’s we, Penn State, or we, as a conference … how do we address that in the future?”

Such comments probably won’t endear Barbour to the most ardent of PSU supporters who believed they should have gotten the spot occupied by Ohio State. Perhaps more interestingly is her hinting that the Big Ten may be open to doing something about addressing the situation. The topic of requiring only conference champions in the mix for the final four spots was a big topic of conversation when the playoff was created and it seems like it will be in the coming seasons even if changes are not made to the criteria the committee must consider.

Penn State AD Sandy Barbour has ‘no problem with the fact’ Ohio State went to the College Football Playoff

It’s an old beef for Sandy Barbour. But it still isn’t with the Ohio State Buckeyes.

“You just said it — we’re the [Big Ten] champions and didn’t go,” Barbour, the athletic director at Penn State, told reporters this week at the Big Ten’s spring joint group meetings when asked about the 2016-17 College Football Playoff bracket.

Zone 6 is one of the many crowded position groups that Ohio State has on it football roster. This is evident as just about every group has their share of talented players patiently working for their shot at big boy football at Ohio State, but the Wide Receiver unit is jam-packed with talent.

JD.png
The Starter #1:

Johnnie Dixon has battled and endured season after season of debilitating injuries to his knees in back-to-back seasons while at Ohio State. This is most likely his last shot at glory as his eligibility is running out and as he showcased during the annual spring game, he showed his talent en-route to a stellar multi-touchdown game. He also showed that, when healthy, he can be that deep threat that Ohio State hasn’t seen since Devin Smith. Johnnie Dixon showed that he is healthy and working towards a comeback that is eerily similar to what Marshon Lattimore went through during his tenure at Ohio State. If he can produce the same way that Lattimore has during last season, Ohio State will be lethal. With a new Offensive Coordinator in Kevin Wilson, who is an offensive genius at the helm, the receivers should have the numbers necessary to keep teams unbalanced and on their heels. With Dixon, he has the speed and the hands to separate and he is a reliable receiver. His productivity would just depend on his health.

KH.png
The Starter #2:

K.J. Hill has the talent to start alongside Dixon. He also has sure hands and has the ability to obtain RAC yards with ease. He is elusive and shift, but not Dixon shifty. He won’t beat defender with blazing speed, but he has the strength to break arm tackles and blow through defenders for big gains. Hill could also catch between defenders, which would be useful during key third down situations. With the amount of talent on the roster, this second starter at Wide Receiver could go in any direction, but I am sure that Hill has done enough to catch the eye of the coaching staff. He is also durable and if other go down, the staff could rest assured that Hill and company have the weapons to plug in and play. He is a big-play waiting to happen and with his suddenness and burst, he could give defenders headaches throughout the season. He will be leaned on during the entirety of the season to produce for the coaching staff this season as one of the few contributors to last seasons squad.

PC.png
Slot/H-Back:

The need for the next Curtis Samuel is needed to ensure production in the Ohio State passing attack and with his departure, it opened up the door for Parris Campbell, Brendon White and Eric Glover-Williams to make their impression on the coaching staff. Unfortunately for the last two, Campbell was given many looks and he looks like the eventual starter this fall. Between his speed and the ability to run after the catch, he will be another weapon and asset to the Buckeye coaching staff. He will be moved around and utilized similar to many of those before him under Coach Meyer. There is still a lot of time for him to lose ground, but we will see.

Other Candidates:

There are other names out there and the Class of 2017 will have previously mentioned Brendon White, Trevon Grimes, Jaylen Harris and Ellijah Gardiner coming in this summer. The also have Austin Mack and Binjimen Victor waiting vying for playing time as well. For now, they will grind until called upon and under Urban Meyer, waiting isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as he has been able to produce NFL caliber players with little to no experience or production. With another mass exodus, this time with transfers out of the program and the occasional underclassman leaving for the pros, the younger players will have to be ready to be called upon during game days. Lets hope they will be ready.

Three weeks after being taken with the 15th pick of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, safety Malik Hooker has signed his rookie contract with the team. Hooker was the second Ohio State defensive back taken in the first round of this year’s draft, with cornerback Marshon Lattimore being taken four spots earlier by the New Orleans Saints. The former Ohio State safety should provide an immediate impact on a Colts defense that was one of the worst in the NFL last year against the pass.

Hooker still hasn’t been on the field for the Colts in preseason workouts since he is still recovering from shoulder surgery in January, but there is no denying what the safety can bring to a defense when fully healthy. In his only years as a starter for Ohio State, Hooker intercepted seven passes, and returned three of those interceptions for touchdowns. Many have compared Hooker to former Miami safety Ed Reed, who current Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano coached when he was with the Hurricanes, and Hooker should give the Colts a presence at safety that they haven’t had since Bob Sanders patrolled the secondary.

— JaQuan Lyle (@JMamba13) May 18, 2017

After he was arrested over the weekend in Evansville, Indiana on misdemeanor charges of public intoxication, criminal mischief to a vehicle, and disorderly conduct, guard JaQuan Lyle apologized for his arrest, along with confirming that he is no longer a member of the Ohio State men’s basketball team. Lyle, who was heading into his junior year with the Buckeyes, quit the basketball team on April 11th according to an Ohio State spokesman.

In two seasons with the Buckeyes, Lyle averaged 11.3 points per game and 4.4 assists per game. The loss of Lyle leaves a big hole in the backcourt for the Buckeyes, in what is likely a make-or-break year for head coach Thad Matta. Before quitting the team, Lyle was the lone signee left from the 2015 recruiting class, with the other four members having previously transferred out of the program. The former Ohio State guard didn’t mention any plans on whether or not he plans to continue playing college basketball at another program, or will explore other options.

“We definitely have the talent. t’s about sticking with the process and understanding that we are good enough. More than anything, it’s really going out and doing it. We have the guys to compete for another Big Ten championship.”

Ohio State right fielder Dominic Canzone via Tom Reed, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State baseball will close out their season this weekend when they host Indiana for three games. Last year around this time, Ohio State was getting ready for the Big Ten Tournament, which they would go on to win and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament. With seven starters gone from the 2016 team, Ohio State has posted just a 21-32 record this year, which won’t be good enough to qualify the Buckeyes for next week’s Big Ten Tournament.

There are reasons for optimism for the future for the Buckeyes, and a big reason for that is because of right fielder Dominic Canzone. The freshman is leading the team in batting average and slugging percentage, and is second in the Big Ten in batting average in conference games. Not only is Canzone getting it done at the plate, but he also hasn’t committed an error in right field in 46 games this year. The overall performance from Canzone has the Cuyahoga Falls product in the running to win freshman of the year honors. With a core of Canzone and a number of other talented underclassmen, Ohio State could be back near the top of the Big Ten standings sooner rather than later.

The Buckeyes will have a tough time ending the year on a positive note against the surging Hoosiers.

It’s funny how a baseball season can seem so unbelievably quick yet so interminably long at the same time. Ohio State has reached the end of its schedule, the final three games in what has been a disappointing season to say the very least. It feels as though opening day in Osceola, Florida was just last week, but a grueling 53 games that saw the Buckeyes on the wrong end of the score time and again, often from self-inflicted wounds, has also worn down even the most ardent supporters of the program.

There will be a time, after the season finale on Saturday, to evaluate what, exactly, the state of the program is; to dissect what went wrong, who underperformed, who surprised, and where things go from here. There will surely be a host of answers, details that in hindsight will help to explain how the club went into a tailspin, and, as always in baseball, reasons to be optimistic that 2017 was just a momentary glitch for the scarlet and gray, a bump along the road to bigger and better things.

But for now, we turn our attention to the games still left to be played. We turn to the five players (Shea Murray, Jake Post, Zach Ratcliff, Joe Stoll, and Jalen Washington) who will be donning the scarlet and gray for the last time, with Senior Day being held on Saturday. It goes without saying, that quintet would like the final act of their careers to be a mark in the win column.

Baseball is a sport beloved because of its promise of nearly infinite tomorrows, but those days are in short supply for this year’s Ohio State squad. With the postseason all but mathematically out of the question, this is one last chance for the Buckeyes to leave everyone involved - players, coaches, and fans alike - with something positive to hold onto once this season has receded deep into memory, and something to build off of moving forward into future seasons.

Indiana Hoosier (30-19-2, 12-8-1 in Big Ten play)

There is perhaps no hotter team in the Big Ten than Indiana, which comes to town winner of seven of its last 10, including a 4-3 victory over national No. 2 Louisville on Tuesday night, and consecutive conference series wins over Minnesota, Michigan Maryland, and Penn State. Though the two sides did not meet in 2016, the Hoosiers have won their last 10 games against the Buckeyes, dating back to 2013.

Head coach Chris Lemonis has a team that can mash the baseball and do enough on the mound to win ballgames. Indiana has a conference-leading 60 home runs and ranks third in slugging percentage and doubles. Against an Ohio State pitching staff depleted by injuries and ineffectiveness, the Hoosiers lineup will be licking its chops.

The 3-4-5 hitters for Indiana will give any staff nightmares. Sophomores Matt Lloyd and Luke Miller and senior Craig Dedelow all rank in the top eight in the Big Ten in home runs. Lloyd in particular has having an all-conference type of season, slashing .322/.429/.611 with 13 doubles, 10 homers, and 39 runs batted in. Dedelow’s 13 longballs and 42 RBIs lead the team.

The pitching staff has had its issues, though, and may explain why a club with such power potential sits in sixth place in the Big Ten standings. The Hoosiers’ hurlers yield a .280 opposition batting average and give up just under five runs per game.

The weekend rotation kicks off with sophomore right-hander Jonathan Stiever, who has gone 3-3 with a 3.90 earned run average in 11 starts covering 57.2 innings. Stiever has been hit at a .277 clip by opponents, but managed to walk just four batters all season.

Behind him is fellow sophomore Pauly Milto, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound righty who has split time between starting and relieving. In 17 appearances that includes 7 starts, he’s amassed a 5-3 record with a 3.54 ERA in 61 innings of work. With a .258 batting average against and 1.26 WHIP, Milto has been solid, if unspectacular.

The final arm of the weekend is freshman Cal Krueger, who like Milto has split time between the rotation and the pen. Going 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA in 19 appearances that includes four starts, the Jasper, Indiana native has been impressive in his first collegiate season. Opposing batters hit just .243 against him, and he possesses a strikeout-to-walk ratio better than 2-to-1.

What Lemonis has in spades is options in his bullpen. An additional eight arms on the roster have made at least 13 appearances in some capacity, with freshman lefty Cameron Beauchamp (2.89 ERA) and Lloyd, who pulls double duty as the club’s closer, saving seven games, being tough to scratch out runs against.

The rivalry with Indiana has not been kind to Ohio State in the recent past, and given that these are two teams having decidedly different seasons, the odds seemed stacked against the Buckeyes. But this is a squad that has shown fight even in tough circumstances, and with the year coming to a close, will want to send its seniors off on a positive note.

Miller gets early Buckeye offer

While their focus is primarily on the 2018 class, Ohio State never seems to leave any stone unturned. That proved to be the case on Wednesday when they went to the Grand Canyon State to offer ‘20 QB Jack Miller of Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Yeah, it’s a bit early to be speaking on current high school freshman. With that being said, it’s pretty much inevitable that Miller is going to be one of the more highly pursued players in his class. The current 6-foot-3, 197-pounder has already racked up offer a handful of offers. The latest offer from the Buckeyes put them in that group along with Arizona, Arizona State, Florida State and Louisiana Tech.

Obviously, there is a long way to go in this recruitment. But jumping in very early certainly won’t negatively impact Ohio State’s chances.

Ohio State trending for Campbell

Just two days after adding a commitment from ‘18 outside linebacker Dallas Gant, a four-star prospect from St. John’s Jesuit (OH), the Buckeyes look to be garnering some momentum in the recruitment of another blue-chipper in this year’s cycle.

On Wednesday, Ohio State acquired two 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions for ‘18 cornerback Tyson Campbell of American Heritage (FL). Campbell, a 6-foot-2, 180-pounder, is one of the very best prospects in the class (currently 28th overall) and would be yet another exceptional pickup for head coach Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes. It’s safe to say that adding Campbell, the fourth best CB in the class, to a back end that already features ‘18 cornerback Sevyn Banks and safeties Josh Proctor and Jaiden Woodbey wouldn’t be a bad thing.

If the Scarlet and Gray do outlast programs like Clemson, LSU, Miami (FL) and many more in this race, it would be their second pull from the respected high school program residing in Fort Lauderdale. The first was highly touted five-star QB/ATH Torrance Gibson. Unfortunately, Gibson would go on to never play a regular season snap for the Buckeyes and is now off to Cincinnati to suit up for Luke Fickell and the Bearcats.

No changes for Tannor

About three weeks ago, ‘18 defensive end Caleb Tannor of Miller Grove (GA) revealed his top ten group that included Ohio State. On Wednesday, the three-star prospect revealed a picture on his Twitter account to, I guess you could say “remind” everyone who was in the group; the 6-foot-3, 225-pounder made no new changes to his top schools list.

So, why is that news? It’s news because since initially dropping that list almost a month ago, Tannor has secured offers from Arkansas, Ole Miss, Purdue and UAB. The schools that still have yet to offer are Clemson, LSU, Ohio State and South Carolina.

The Buckeyes already have a commitment from defensive end Brenton Cox in the class and have their sights set on a few other guys like Micah Parsons and Tyreke Smith.

Who knows, maybe things change and Tannor picks up an OSU offer and comes to an already loaded Buckeye squad. But, seeing as the Scarlet and Gray have commitments as well as targets for a couple other top prospects, the odds that Tannor comes to Columbus is low.
