It’s the biggest #Sens game of the year.

Let’s fill @CdnTireCtr and be loud and proud! #ALLIN

BE THERE: https://t.co/WvV790wRSK pic.twitter.com/aOuUvZ7MeD

— Ottawa Senators (@Senators) May 23, 2017

For the second time this postseason, the conversation and analysis regarding an Ottawa Senators playoff game has been hijacked by a discussion over the number of tickets being sold for it.

Yes, after failing to sell out game one of the Eastern Conference semi-final versus the Rangers (16,744 fans), the Senators are reportedly lagging in the sale of tickets for tonight’s game six of the Eastern Conference final.

The horror.

Outsiders will inevitably use this as an opportunity to drop trou and shit all over Ottawa as a Canadian market for hockey, but this isn’t Toronto. If the Senators had a base of approximately 8.7-million fans to sell tickets to for three games in 10-years, I’m sure they’d be doing just fine too.

This attendance issue, if you can call it that because hey, there’s still plenty of time for all of the seats to be paid and accounted for before game time, has caused a bit of a stir.

Sure, I guess it is kind of disappointing that in what could ultimately wind up being the final game of the Senators’ season, the focus is not on the team or how they are just two wins away from reaching the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in franchise history. The attention is unfortunately on yet another negative sidebar story that has dogged this team during their playoff run. It’s not on the same level as Mark Borowiecki threatening a return to the lineup, but it’s definitely not bueno.

At the very least, it means that people are judging the Ottawa Senators and their fans.

In today’s Ottawa Citizen, Bruce Garrioch wrote that “If this game isn’t sold out, it will raise a lot of questions about the market.”

Fuck that nonsense.

https://twitter.com/StefanWolejszo/status/866796849381818368

The team and its fan base are doing quite fine, thank you. But hey, if you want to hang the attendance issue on a lingering factor, don’t hesitate to place the blame where it’s more than deserved – on the organization and its owner who refuse to accept responsibility for putting the franchise in this position.

The city of Ottawa is renowned for its walk-up crowds, but attention should be paid to the precipitous decline in the season ticket base and the pressures it puts on the walk-up crowds to make up for all of these empty seats on short notice.

Rather than poke fun at an “eccentric, quirky and goofy owner”, Senators fans are bearing the brunt of the criticism.

If you thought the Senators were tired of playing defence in Sunday’s 7-0 blowout to the Penguins, think of how their fans feel because they’ve essentially gone on the defensive since the playoffs started.

From the outset, fans have had to endure the criticisms of their favourite team by outsiders.

At first, it was because the Senators were the only playoff-bound team that owned a negative goal differential. Then as the Senators’ successfully disposed of the Bruins and Rangers, it was because of the NHL’s playoff format, the string of key injuries and poor goaltending that had a hand in Ottawa’s success. Or better yet, that it was strictly because of a boring style of hockey. I mean, I know that the Senators have a tendency to fall into a passive trap that congests play and creates turnovers within the neutral zone, but Ottawa can’t be that boring. It’s not like they moved their most entertaining and talented defencemen to Nashville.

The playoffs are an exercise in good luck and fortune where one bounce or an untimely injury can sink a club, so Senators fans shouldn’t enjoy this experience any less simply because they’ve had an easier road than others.

I mean, Carolina Hurricanes fans shouldn’t enjoy their 2006 Stanley Cup win any less simply because they didn’t have to go through the Ottawa Senators with a healthy Dominik Hasek.

The Senators and their fans shouldn’t have to apologize for the team’s success or enjoy this run any less simply because they haven’t had to climb hockey’s Mt. Everest to get there.

Even though Bruce Arthur of the Toronto Post recently wrote about Ottawa’s insecurities and made mention of how the roots of this lack of self-confidence are tied in to the Toronto Maple Leafs and the repeated defeats that the Senators suffered at the hands of those Leafs in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, it’s part of this team’s history and the effects helped shape the psyche of this fan base.

Are Senators fans more sensitive or insecure about their favourite team’s stock?

Is this even quantifiable? Or more importantly, who fucking cares?

The Ottawa Senators are one of three remaining teams left playing in the NHL postseason and it simply puts them and their fans more under the microscope than they would otherwise be.

Wear the slights and criticisms like a badge of honour, Ottawa.

Not all of the coverage is going to be flattering.

Let people talk.

Enjoy the limelight and if Ottawa gets bounced tonight, so be it. We’ll get a chance to see how well Montreal and its fans cope with the attention of having P.K. Subban reach the Cup Final. I’m sure they’ll handle it fine.

LGHL Ohio State walk-on Joey Lane is living the dream

Ohio State walk-on Joey Lane is living the dream

The junior walk-on is making the most of his time with the Buckeyes.

“It’s my dream to be playing here, at a program with tons of former NBA Players, amazing coaches and being able to travel around the country. It’s a once in a lifetime thing and I’m thankful I didn't turn it down.”

- Joey Lane via Andrew Zoldan, Buckeye Grove

Joey Lane isn’t the biggest name on Ohio State’s basketball team. In fact, until his sophomore year, Lane was playing without a scholarship, paying his own way through school and still helping in any way he could on and off the court. But his hard work has paid off as Lane received a scholarship for last season and has continued his excellent work ethic. Coming out of high school, Lane was faced with the option to play and be an integral part of a Division II or Division III school with a lot of playing time or to potentially walk on to a Division I program like Ohio State.

Lane chose the latter, obviously, and hasn’t regretted his decision. Lane was a fan of the Buckeyes growing up, so for him, it was always a dream to play in Columbus. Programs like Denison offered him plenty of playing time but when he was offered a walk-on position at Ohio State he couldn’t turn it away. One of the top players at his high school, there was certainly a transition period of adjusting to his new role on the team. Now, he’s a vocal leader on the team and is focused on bringing the team energy any chance that he gets.

“[Best quarterback situations in the Big Ten] Best of the best: Ohio State returns the most productive quarterback in program history to operate an offense that promises to let him unleash some deeper throws this year.”

- Dan Murphy, ESPN

The quarterback position in the Big Ten has always been key for any of the conference’s teams that want to make a run and compete for championships. And there’s usually a decent crop of talent to boot. This season is no exception, and Dan Murphy broke down which teams have the best quarterback situations in the Big Ten. Putting Ohio State as the best was likely an easy choice, returning senior quarterback J.T. Barrett. Barrett has accounted for 100 touchdowns in his three years with the Buckeyes and after a down year offensively in 2016, the hiring of offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson might be enough to kick the team into a new gear.

The other top teams mentioned were of course Penn State and Michigan. After a sensational run to the Big Ten championship win and a close loss in the Rose Bowl to USC, Nittany Lions quarterback Trace McSorely is probably looking forward to having another stellar season and his team should be among the favorites to win the conference. The Wolverines also return Wilton Speight after leading his team to a 10-win season, he’ll be looking to take the next step.

“I think it went all right. I’ve definitely had days where I was kicking better but I’ve also had days where I feel like I couldn’t kick a ball to save my life so I think I did a good job out there. They want me to come back for another one too so I definitely think I came in and made a statement.”

- Austin Brizee via Matt Barnes, NBC4i

If you’re not caught up with the story of Austin Brizee, he’s a member of the Ohio State marching band and he made some noise during the Buckeyes’ bowl game practice for nailing a 55-yard field goal. The video of him doing that landed him a shot at trying out for the team as a kicker and after meeting with the coaching staff and team, he’s had a tryout and they want him back for another. Now, he’s been training with former Ohio State kicker Kyle Clinton and has even been working out with a friend that is a personal trainer.

Brizee has even given up a summer internship in hopes to pursue his kicking career. While he hasn’t made the team just yet, there’s a real possibility it could happen. His next tryout, according to the article, comes in August and will be a week after he tries out for the marching band once again.

A coach never wants to build a program around junior college players. But they can be valuable to help fill in gaps on a roster, especially during the building process. And the Big Ten will feature several interesting JC transfers. Here are the schools that figure to be impacted the most by junior college transfers this fall. LGHL Ohio State’s Dominic Canzone garners third-team All-Big Ten, All-Freshman honors

Ohio State’s Dominic Canzone garners third-team All-Big Ten, All-Freshman honors

dom.0.jpg

The Buckeyes’ talented right fielder received some hard-earned recognition on Tuesday.

After a tremendous rookie season, Ohio State right fielder Dominic Canzone was named to the third-team All-Big Ten and All-Freshman teams on Tuesday. The announcement came as part of the conference’s end of year awards in advance of the Big Ten tournament that begins on Wednesday in Bloomington on the campus of Indiana University.

Canzone overcame a rocky a start to his collegiate career to establish himself as the Buckeyes’ most consistent, most dangerous hitter in the middle of the order by season’s end. Appearing in 49 of the club’s 56 games, including 39 starts, the Sagamore Hills native slashed .343/.390/.458 with three triples, four doubles, three home runs, 36 runs batted in, 13 stolen bases, and 22 runs scored. His batting average placed him fifth overall for the year in the Big Ten.

“There is a fire in him,” Ohio State head coach Greg Beals told the Columbus Dispatch last week. “He’s a quiet leader being a freshman, but there’s (a fire) burning inside him that fuels his competitiveness. He has earned the respect of all of our team.”

A Louisville Slugger High School All-American at Walsh Jesuit High School, Canzone was edged out for Freshman of the Year honors by Maryland’s Tyler Blohm.

During conference play, Canzone upped his game, slashing .386/.432/.586, with 32 hits, 24 RBIs, and seven steals, all of which ranked among the top players in the Big Ten. Playing right field, which is perhaps the toughest spot at Bill Davis Stadium due to the sun and wind, he did not commit an error in 85 chances, contributed seven outfield assists, and made a number of highlight-reel catches to rob opponents of extra-base hits.

Canzone was perhaps the biggest bright spot in a disappointing season for Ohio State. The Buckeyes went 22-34 on the year, and at 8-16 in conference play, missed out on the Big Ten tournament just a year after winning it and claiming a berth in an NCAA regional.

“We definitely have the talent,” Canzone said. “It’s about sticking with the process and understanding that we are good enough. More than anything, it’s really going out and doing it. We have the guys to compete for another Big Ten championship.”

No other Ohio State players received all-conference recognition, though senior co-captain Jalen Washington was the club’s Sportsmanship Award honoree.

Jake Adams of Iowa won Big Ten Player of the Year unanimously, Maryland’s Brian Shaffer took home Pitcher of the Year, and Nebraska skipper Darin Erstad was named Coach of the Year.

Canzone’s successful campaign shows his potential, and if he continues to develop as a five-tool player during his time in scarlet and gray, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that he could contend for conference Player of the Year honors, receive first-team All-Big Ten distinction, and hear his name called in the MLB draft before his career is over.

The full listing of all-conference honorees can be found here.

And y’all said Ohio State couldn’t recruit defensive tackles?

Ohio State has recruited at an elite level unmatched by virtually anybody in college football outside of Alabama, and they’ve done it at almost every position. Defensive back? They probably signed the best defensive back class ever last cycle. There is a bevy of blue-chip quarterbacks and running backs on the roster, along with an astonishing collection of terrifying defensive ends. The Buckeyes even grabbed the best punter in the country in 2016.

But there’s one position group where recruiting has lagged a bit behind, much to the chagrin of some fans, and that’s defensive tackle.

It’s not like Ohio State isn’t getting good players. Guys like Michael Hill and Malik Barrow were four-star players, and other elite recruits, like Dre’Mont Jones, and Jashon Cornell, were blue-chippers who moved inside. But Ohio State has swung hard on a few nationally ranked, pure DTs over the last few classes, and struck out most of the time.

Maybe it’s because most of those players are concentrated in the southeast. Maybe it’s about scheme. Maybe it’s about something else.

The streak ended in the 2017 recruiting class, as the Buckeyes inked high four-star Haskell Garrett out of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. Garrett was the fourth ranked DT in the country, and should help plug the middle for Buckeye lines for years to come.

But Ohio State has another commit that may be even better. Meet five-star Taron Vincent. He’s GOOD.

How good? Watch this.

No. 1 DT Taron Vincent is so, so good
Five-star Taron Vincent is Ohio State University Football's highest-rated defensive tackle commit in the Urban Meyer era. It's not hard to see why.

Posted by Land-Grant Holy Land - For Ohio State fans on Monday, May 22, 2017

We’re a long ways from signing day, and other schools will surely come after Vincent. After all, he’s the top ranked defensive tackle in the whole country, and a top ten player, period.

But if he sticks, the narrative that Ohio State can’t recruit elite DTs should die down, especially since the Buckeyes are likely to add at least one more very good DT in the 2018 class.

Look out, rest of the country.

Ohio State makes the cut for 2 elite prospects

5119280.0.jpg

The Buckeyes could soon be adding two of the country’s top defensive recruits in the 2018 recruiting cycle.

Ohio State has made a case for being referred to as “DBU” with multiple former Buckeye defensive backs being chosen as first-round selections in both of the last two NFL drafts.

This has become a huge recruiting tool for Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff, who secured commitments from six elite DB recruits last year. On top of this, the program has already earned early commitments from two of the country’s top 10 safety prospects in the 2018 recruiting cycle in Jaiden Woodbey (Bellflower, CA / St. John Bosco) and Josh Proctor (Owasso, OK / Owasso).

But they aren’t stopping there.

Yesterday afternoon, the country’s No. 1 safety prospect, BJ Foster (Angleton, TX / Angleton) informed everyone that he will be committing June 5, and again hinted at the final schools he is considering. Given that our emoji-science is correct on this, the five-star will choose between Texas, LSU, TCU, Ohio State and Michigan.

June 5th is the date stay tuned‼️ ⭕〽️

— Thebjfoster (@nofear_2) May 22, 2017

Hometown school Texas has long been the favorite to land Foster, and the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions support this with the Longhorns receiving 100 percent of the votes.

Unable to get Foster on campus would appear to hurt the Buckeyes chances in landing him, but the recent success Ohio State has had at the position has allowed them to remain a legitimate contender.

Even if Foster spurns Ohio State in favor of former Buckeye coordinator Tom Herman and the Longhorns, don’t expect the Buckeyes to stop recruiting him. Foster is a top-level talent and is seen as the No. 15 overall recruit in the class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He would make for a perfect fit in Ohio State’s secondary, and Meyer knows this.

Key Ohio State ILB target sets commitment date

The coming weeks will be very important in shaping how Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class will look when it is all said and done. This is because the team also learned yesterday that another elite defensive recruit will be announcing his decision soon.

Four-star inside linebacker Teradja Mitchell (Virginia Beach, VA / Bishop Sullivan Catholic) took to Twitter late Monday evening to let everyone know he will be announcing his school of choice June 2.

T O P T W O ✌ ‼️

I'll be announcing which college I will be attending Friday, June 2nd. 7 PM @ Bishop Sullivan CHS #StayTuned pic.twitter.com/wPUDogqxez

— Teradja Mitchell ™⁷ (@WhosThatNumber7) May 23, 2017

Mitchell, the No. 2 ILB in the country, has long looked at the Ohio State program in high regards and has become one of the programs most sought after recruits. With more than 30 scholarship offers, he has had the difficult task of narrowing down an impressive list and has finally decided on a top two of Florida State and Ohio State.

The race for Mitchell has been interesting and both programs are confident in their chances. The elite ILB has been vocal in his admiration of both programs and their coaches and he found time to take final visits to each of the schools in the last two months.

He last visited Columbus the weekend of April 8, but Florida State was able to get him on campus the weekend of the May 13. It is unknown if Mitchell has already made his decision between the two, but he knows enough to have the confidence of setting an announcement date.

Make sure to follow Land-Grant Holy Land, as the coming weeks will be very important for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State in good position for 2019 DB

After offering four-star DB Kaiir Elam (North Palm Beach, FL / The Benjamin School) last week, Elam reportedly has a strong affection for the program.

Elam, who is already seen as one of the top DBs in the 2019 class, was offered by Ohio State on May 17, bringing his total offer count to 16. He spoke with Alex Gleitman of BuckNuts yesterday and he talked about the admiration and respect he has for the program and its head coach.

“It's a blessing and I'm thankful,” Elam said to Gleitman, referring to the offer. “But now I have to prove to everyone that I deserve what was given. OSU has one of the greatest head coaches of all-time and is a winning program.”

Home-state school Florida is currently viewed as having the upper-hand in Elam’s recruitment, but it is extremely early. In his discussion with Gleitman, he mentioned he plans on making a return trip to Columbus this summer after first visiting this same time last year. That visit will shed more light on Ohio State’s chances on landing Elam.

Retracing the Paths of my Uncles part 6

The Ardennes Forest is filled with pines, so thick that as I walked through a small portion on a sunny day, it was dark. To top matters off, 1944 was one of the worst winters in Belgian history. The roads and the woods were covered with thick snow. The American supply line had failed to keep up. Most troops lacked overcoats, boots, and white uniforms. They eventually took to cutting holes in the middle of bed sheets and pulling the sheet over their head as make-do camouflage.

Uncle Cliff's unit, the 75th Infantry Division, no more than arrived in Belgium then they were pushed into the front lines. By now the German's had penetrated about sixty miles into Belgium on a front forty miles wide. Some green units, such as the 106th Division, collapsed or ran.

Leadership broke down. One brigade of the 106th fought well, but the colonel in command of their sister unit, a unit they counted on to support their flank, lost communication with division headquarters, panicked and surrendered, causing a huge gap in the American lines.

German special operations forces also contributed. Wearing captured American uniforms and using captured tanks and jeeps they went about the American sector, turning road signs, cutting phone and communication lines, ambushing small units. They didn't do that much physical damage, but they had a great impact in creating fear and doubt among the American troops .

One of Uncle Cliff's clearest memories was of a patrol along one of the highways. He was driving a half-track, his lieutenant sitting in the passenger seat. One soldier maned the 50 caliber machine gun and three more soldiers had rifles. They came upon a Sherman tank at an intersection. The lieutenant and the tank commander began to talk, the lieutenant asking if the tankers had seen anything he could report. Uncle Cliff claims the voice of the tank commander didn't sound American. The machine gunner popped off, "Ask him for the password." The lieutenant continued to converse, "Ask him for the pass word. We're supposed to make sure they know the pass word!" The lieutenant kept on with a calm manner and finally ended the conversation, turned to Uncle Cliff and said, "Get us the hell out of here, slow and easy."

"But you didn't ask for the password, sir, you're supposed to ask for the password," said the machine gunner.

"You want me to take on a tank with a pop gun? No I didn't ask for the password. I'll report him as soon as we get back to headquarters. In the mean time my job is to try and get us all back home, not killed"

I was probably ten or eleven when I first heard him tell that story. His war had been over for eight years, yet every time he told that story you could see the strain in his face and hear the fear in his voice.

PTSD wasn't born in Vietnam, it lives within all soldiers in all wars.

The Starter:

This years Tight End spot is retained by Marcus Baugh. The incumbent starter from last season will be looked at for his familiarity in the system, but now all bets are off due to a new position coach and Offensive Coordinator in Kevin Wilson. The Tight Ends might see an uptick in targets, but unfortunately Baugh was held out due to an injury. He will be leaned on by the younger players for guidance, but he will be up for the task that Jeff Heuerman and Nick Vannett established in the past.

Tight End #2:

The Tight End position was used sparingly last season, but during the Spring Game we saw an increase in productivity. A.J. Alexander and Luke Farrell combined for 50 total yards and a touchdown, which Alexander snagged. This is even for now, but a lot could change during fall camp. Factor in the absence of another pair of talented Tight Ends in Jake Hausmann, who was nursing a sprained ankle and Kierre Hawkins, who was used sparingly in the game. The Tight End battle and their usage will be interesting for the fans to watch. Hopefully they are used more to aid in the battle to secure receiving threats for years to come.

John Rodenberg correctly predicted Hubbard’s landing spot—and potentially his future draft status.

“You have a great feeling for all the guys that played for you but it’s just really neat when that one guy--how many coaches have a first-round draft pick?...It feels good to see that guy make it because there are a lot of guys that don’t.”

The myth of Sam Hubbard’s beginnings at Ohio State often centers around Urban Meyer seeing Hubbard play dodgeball at Archbishop Moeller High School in Cincinnati, which boasts one of the best high school football programs in the nation. Hubbard, then committed to play lacrosse at Notre Dame, already had a major advocate to attest for his football ability in his head coach, John Rodenberg. And Rodenberg insists that he told Meyer and Kerry Coombs at that moment that Hubbard would be a first-round defensive end, even though Hubbard played at safety in high school. Now, as Hubbard returns for his fourth season with the Buckeyes, it seems that Rodenberg may have been spot on. Even on a loaded defensive line with ample star power, Hubbard is already a projected first-rounder in the 2018 NFL Draft.

But Hubbard is used to being surrounded by the best. In 2015, during his redshirt freshman season, Hubbard backed Joey Bosa, a future top-three pick, and Tyquan Lewis. Last season, in his sophomore campaign, Hubbard earned a starting role alongside Lewis while Jalyn Holmes and Nick Bosa rotated in at defensive end. And while Hubbard didn’t have the explosive production he displayed during his freshman year, registering just 3.5 sacks, he really wasn’t needed on the field as much with such a dynamic rotation.

Meyer calls Hubbard “the definition of elite,” highlighting his work ethic and demeanor as he continues to improve. After arriving on campus without knowing where to play, Hubbard spent his redshirt season figuring out where he would land, ultimately coming into his role at defensive end. But, said Rodenberg, Meyer and the recruiting team never promised any particular role or position for Hubbard, recruiting him instead as an outstanding athlete who they could find a spot for. And Rodenberg guessed right about where that would ultimately be.

Ohio State center Billy Price was selected to the Rimington Award watch list, honoring the nation’s best center. Last season, Pat Elflein took home the honor for Ohio State, becoming the first Buckeye to do so since LeCharles Bentley in 2001. Like Elflein last year, Price will be making the transition from guard to center. While at guard, Price earned first-team All-American honors.

In addition to price, both defensive ends Tyquan Lewis and Sam Hubbard were named as nominees for the Lott IMPACT trophy, which recognizes not just athletic performance but also character of the player. Last year, Lewis was named the Big Ten’s defensive lineman of the year, while Hubbard was a first-team Academic All-American.

Most of the remaining preseason watch lists will be released in July.

“Ohio State basketball is looking for good things to sell right now with the program in a state of flux, and the NBA selling point could be losing some of its luster.”

-Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

With talk of the 2017 NBA Draft heating up, the current projection is that the Los Angeles Lakers will likely take UCLA’s Lonzo Ball. Unfortunately for fellow guard and current Laker D’Angelo Russell, the current thought is also that Russell and Ball might not be able to play together, given their similar skillsets. While it is certainly possible that Russell will remain in L.A., the scenario of being traded to a new team in a new city and earning his time there means a kink on the way to his projected impact and relevance as a former No. 2-overall draft pick. And that, of course, has a ripple effect back to Ohio State, where Russell played for one season and where his image still hangs prominently for potential recruits to see.

At 21 years old, Russell is the most relevant Buckeye in the NBA for these recruits, as he is just a few years removed from high school himself. And Ohio State can continue to capitalize on his high draft status, though where Russell goes from here--whether remaining with the Lakers or starting over with a new franchise--will certainly play a role in how the Buckeyes use him in their pitch.

Still, the Buckeyes boast a number of other talented current players, including Mike Conley for the Memphis Grizzlies, Evan Turner, who last summer signed with the Portland Trail Blazers, and Kosta Koufos from the Sacramento Kings (the Phoenix Suns waived Jared Sullinger in February). However, despite Conley being the most successful of the bunch, he is 29 years old and plays in one of the NBA’s smallest markets. Turner, like Russell, was once a No. 2 draft pick, and while he has found success in the pros, his eight-year career has been spent with four different teams. Koufos, meanwhile, has been a journeyman in the NBA with a successful career, but without the kind of name recognition that resonates with five-star recruits.

Basketball recruiting is certainly a different beast than football, but the goal for the pitch remains the same: Ohio State puts players in the pros, and those players are successful.

In a monster weekend for Ohio State spring sports, the men’s lacrosse team, men’s tennis team and women’s tennis teams all made the national semi-finals in their respective NCAA tournaments.

This season marks the first trip in program history for the women’s tennis program as they swept No. 6 Texas Tech 4-0. It was a whirlwind day for the Buckeyes, the tournament’s three-seed, as they had to move both the time and location of their match from Athens, Georgia to indoor courts in Atlanta due to rain. The women’s squad won the doubles point before victories by Miho Kowase, Ferny Angeles Paz and Anna Sanford sealed the win on the singles courts. Ohio State faces Stanford in Athens this afternoon in the semi-final matchup, with the championship to be played Tuesday.

The men’s squad’s win over TCU Saturday gave the team its fourth semi-finals berth in program history. The 4-3 victory was a rare, gritty win for a team that has swept its competition for much of the season. Ohio State won the doubles point and, with singles wins by Hugo Di Deo, Herkko Pollanen and Kyle Seelig, sealed the match. Ohio State, the three-seed, faced No. 2 Virginia Monday in the semifinals, but the match was delayed due to rain.

For the men’s lacrosse team, their quarterfinals win over Duke Saturday earned them their first-ever appearance in the NCAA semi-finals. The team’s 15 wins on the season also match a program-best set in 1965. Against Duke, the Buckeyes, the No. 3-seed in the tournament, went up early and never relinquished their lead in the 16-11 victory at Hofstra, with senior attackman Eric Fannell leading the way with five goals and two assists on the day. Senior goalie Tom Carey also had a dominant day in goal, recording 14 saves against the nation’s seventh-best scoring offense. Next up, Ohio State will face Towson Saturday in Foxboro.
