A new coaching staff means Ohio State’s 2018 class is back to the drawing board

A new coaching staff often means big changes on the recruiting front. Now, the Buckeyes have a completely clean 2018 slate, as their last commitment from the Thad Matta era is re-opening his options.

Per Zach Fleer, four-star SG Dane Goodwin has decommitted from Ohio State, although he will continue to consider the Buckeyes.

'18 Upper Arlington SG Dane Goodwin has opened his recruitment and decommitted from Ohio State. He will still consider OSU, however.

— Zach Fleer (@ZachFleer270) June 21, 2017

Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch appears to confirm the report.

I have a story posting to Dispatch dot com, but Dane Goodwin has decommitted from the #Buckeyes and is reopening his recruitment.

— Adam Jardy (@AdamJardy) June 21, 2017

Goodwin, a 6-4, high four-star shooting guard, has seen his profile rise after an exceptional high school season. He’s currently ranked as the 4th best player in the state of Ohio, and in the top 75 nationally, per the 247 Sports Composite.

Earlier in June, Goodwin reaffirmed his commitment to the program, and had been a Buckeye commitment since 2014, but clearly, something has changed.

The Buckeyes badly need guards, especially guards that can space the floor like Goodwin, and the Upper Arlington product may very well still remain on Ohio State’s radar. But given the change in coaches and relationships, starting over isn’t that surprising.

Ohio State’s other 2018 commitments, Darius Bazley and Justin Ahrens, also decommitted.

Few things get fans more excited than an upset. Most will fondly recall the time their school knocked off a team that it was supposed to lose to. Some upsets of note of recent vintage are Michigan State taking down Ohio State in Columbus in 2015. And who can forget Penn State topping the Buckeyes last season?

At a recent camp, an in-state prospect showed off what he could do for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State is in the middle of camp season and as the days go on, more and more prospects are flocking to Columbus, Ohio to showcase their skills in front of the coaching staff.

In-state defensive end Noah Potter recently camped at Ohio State and got rave reviews from the Buckeyes’ coaching staff, most notably from defensive line coach Larry Johnson. According to reports, after Potter’s impressive showing, coach Johnson told him that he has a chance to be “scary good.”

— Bill Kurelic (@Bill_Kurelic) June 21, 2017

Potter is a class of 2019 prospect who currently holds five total offers. His offer list does not include Ohio State, but he’s working towards that by coming to camps. Potter already has prototype size at 6-foot-6, 240 pounds, and there’s a good chance that he isn’t quite done growing yet. Potter has visited Ohio State numerous times over the last year and that shows that there is heavy interest on his part. With more impressive camp showings and a good junior season, Potter could hold an Ohio State offer by this time next year.

Here are some highlights from Potter’s sophomore season:

QUICK HITS

  • Though the interest has faded in recent months between Ohio State and in-state running back Tavion Thomas, it is worth noting that he committed to Oklahoma yesterday. If this recruitment wasn’t officially over between both sides, it is now.

Barrett and his teammates have been striving to improve the passing game with Kevin Wilson’s system.

“It's not just me, but the leaders on our team. We have a lot of leaders in our position groups. When it comes to the times when coaches can't be out there, and we have the footballs out, we're coaching each other and doing things we know how to as older guys.”

- J.T. Barrett via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Ohio State’s offseason is still in full swing as the Buckeyes continue to train for the upcoming 2017 campaign. Expectations are high in Columbus, as always, but specifically for the changes that are coming to the offense. Kevin Wilson was named the offensive coordinator, which should bring plenty of firepower to an offense that last season struggled to make big plays when it mattered most. The lack of playmaking came mostly from the passing game, led by senior quarterback J.T. Barrett. Barrett has shown he’s capable of running a high-octane offense in the past, helping lead the 2014 edition of the Buckeyes to the Big Ten championship before going down with injury against Michigan. After some ups and downs over the past two seasons, Barrett says things are going well with the changes in the passing game so far.

Taking what they implemented in the spring, Barrett and several of his teammates have been working on improving their technique during non-mandatory practices on the field without any coaches around. It’s up to the players to be accountable for each other as they work on their chemistry on the field. For the players, the waiting until they can be coached again can be frustrating, but with the season approaching soon enough, it won’t be long before the Buckeyes hit the field for fall practices.

“Just as importantly, though, is the message that the Ohio State brand – even after a pair of rough years – still resonates with top Ohio talent. That has been up for debate as of late, and Young’s decision shows that it is possible to grow up within the Buckeye State but not in central Ohio and still covet the chance to play in Columbus.”

- Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

With the recent hiring of Chris Holtmann, there was early talk of former Butler commit Kyle Young following Holtmann to Ohio State after the hire was official. Now, as we know, Young decided to go through with following the head coach that recruited him. This is a big deal for the Buckeyes who haven’t had the greatest success when it comes to recruiting the past couple of years. Holtmann’s flipping of Young from Butler to Ohio State helps the Buckeyes both on the court and off of it. Young is an Ohio-native and was rated as the second-best prospect in Ohio behind Kaleb Wesson. He was also part of a recruiting class at Butler that was on its way to being considered one of the best in school history.

Now, Young is committed to the Buckeyes and things are already starting to look up. It’s still going to be a process to get Ohio State back among the Big Ten’s best, but this is a step in the right direction in both competitiveness and recruiting. Young was going to be a key factor at Butler but it’s up to him and the coaching staff to decide what kind of role he’ll have with the Buckeyes.

“[The Basketball Tournament 2017] #2 Scarlet and Gray (Ohio State Alumni)”

- TheTournament.com

Speaking of Ohio State basketball, do you miss the good old days of Aaron Craft? Greg Oden? David Lighty? Well, there’s some good news. The Basketball Tournament (TBT) hosts a basketball tournament (duh) with teams from all across the country and more importantly, has teams compiled of former college and even professional basketball players. The Scarlet and Gray team which consists of mostly Ohio State alumni, is listed as a two-seed in their region (similar to the NCAA tournament) and includes former greats like Craft, Oden, Lighty and more.

Former players also include William Buford, Jon Diebler, Evan Ravenel, Dallas Lauderdale, and even include Scoonie Penn as the team’s general manager. All in all, this seems like it should be a fun event filled with old beloved names, and will even be shown on ESPN once the tournament reaches the Super 16.

LGHL What Kyle Young’s commitment means for Ohio State basketball

The Buckeyes got a lot better, for one thing.

After a rough offseason and an awkward coaching search, the basketball Buckeyes got some unquestionably great news Monday night, when four-star forward Kyle Young announced he’ll be flipping from Butler to the Buckeyes.

Young was granted a release by Butler and will be eligible to play this coming season. Here’s what this commitment means in the short and long term.

Ohio State’s floor for next year just got higher

Ohio State basketball hasn’t been picked by anybody to compete for much next season, although raw talent isn’t necessarily the reason. After all, Jae’Sean Tate and Keita Bates-Diop return, along with some intriguing young talent. But depth (basically everywhere) was a major concern, as failures in summer recruiting and roster defections left the Buckeyes one injury away from disaster.

Young’s addition gives Ohio State much more breathing room. With another wing with length and floor stretching ability, Chris Holtmann now has more options for his lineups, flexibility in case of foul trouble or injury, and an additional scoring option off the bench. Nobody short of a one-and-done type talent is likely to single-handedly propel the Buckeyes into Big Ten contention, and Young probably isn’t that kind of player, but his presence alone makes abject disaster less likely.

He gives the Buckeyes a lot more flexibility in 2018 recruiting

It’s not totally clear exactly how many scholarships the Buckeyes will have in 2018, since it depends on what happens with Keita Bates-Diop (who has a redshirt year but may decide to pursue professional basketball after this season), or any other roster attrition, but they’ll have multiple scholarships in what will be a pivotal recruiting class in restocking a depleted squad.

Ohio State will probably still want to recruit a wing, especially since Ohio has multiple solid options in 2018, but with Young, Derek Funderburk and Andre Wesson, that position group may be the deepest on the team for the Buckeyes. The top 2018 recruiting priority is unquestionably guards, especially point guards, (Dwayne Cohill probably being the top priority, but Holtmann’s staff has been offering virtually every other high level 2018 guard that Butler had a relationship with too) but knowing they have another high-level player banked in 2017 can make the 2018 search a little more manageable.

Oh yeah, Ohio State is getting a quality player who should play minutes next season

Ohio State has struggled scoring over the last few seasons, and that’s something that Young projects to do pretty well, as a three-point shooter or as somebody who can run the floor in transition, and he’s shown solid rebounding ability as well. He should be able to play at either the three or the four, depending on who he has to guard, and can help give something the Buckeyes badly need, additional floor spacing, especially if say, Jae’Sean Tate and Kaleb Wesson are on the floor at the same time.

Like most freshman, Young will need time to get stronger and learn the intricacies of defense. But given his skillset and the fact that Holtmann clearly already has faith in him, I’d expect Young to play next season, and not just in blowouts before Big Ten play. Not as a starter or anything, but perhaps as a backup four or another shooter off the bench. And from there, who knows?

The best recruits in the country continue to show the Buckeyes love as the school makes the cut for two more blue-chip prospects.

Urban Meyer has successfully brought Ohio State recruiting to an unthinkable level. It seems that day after day, the best recruits in the country list the Buckeyes among their top schools and Monday was no different.

Following a weekend camp in which Ohio State hosted some of the top prospects in the country, the program continued to roll as ASA College junior college prospect, Badara Traore, released his top seven schools. As expected, the Buckeyes made the cut.

Top 7 #Blessed pic.twitter.com/whHeqhYwvb

— Badara Traore (@BadaraTraore72) June 19, 2017

Traore is seen as one of the top junior college transfers in the country and it shows as he has offers from most top-level college football programs. Along with Ohio State, the four-star offensive tackle included Nebraska, Auburn, LSU, Ole Miss, Oregon and Oklahoma in his list of top schools.

The Buckeyes have already been able to earn commitments from two of the top offensive line recruits in the 2018 recruiting class in recent four-star OT commit Matthew Jones and fellow four-star OT Max Wray, but the program appears to be looking to add one more ‘slob’ to the class.

If the coaches decide that they want Traore to be that guy, they may have a secret weapon in getting him to choose Columbus. Before playing for ASA College, Traore played for Nassau Community College, a familiar school for Meyer and the Buckeye coaching staff. Current Buckeye OT Malcolm Pridgeon attended Nassau C.C. before transferring to Ohio State. The two OTs know each other well and could set the Buckeyes apart from the rest of the field.

2019 top 10 OT includes Ohio State in top 5

Sticking with the guys in the trenches, the Buckeyes learned the early work they put in with OT Doug Nester (Huntington, WV/ Spring Valley) is paying off. The four-star OT released his top five schools Monday afternoon and again, Ohio State made the cut.

Top 5‼️ pic.twitter.com/DmHrikePUS

— Doug Nester (@Freshie74) June 19, 2017

The Buckeyes have their hands full with Nester, however. The No. 6 OT in the 2019 recruiting class included Virginia Tech, Alabama, Florida and West Virginia alongside Ohio State in his list of schools he is most interested in.

While Nester has only played a couple of seasons of high school football, he already projects as one of the top players in the class, no matter the position. Ohio State was one of the first programs to extend an offer to Nester, which is one of the many reasons he is highly interested in joining the program.

For the majority of his recruitment, it appeared that Ohio State and hometown school West Virginia were going to be the programs to beat out for his commitment. However, Alabama recently joined the list of suitors for Nester and has quickly earned a spot in the schools he is most interested in. Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide hosted Nester last weekend and he left the visit impressed and with an offer.

It is still early in Nester’s recruitment, and with the amount of attention he has already earned, he will likely take his time in making a final decision.
