First the Seahawks, then the Browns, the Buckeye is now with the Colts.
After some bouncing around throughout his first year in the NFL, former Ohio State captain
Tyvis Powell has found yet another city to call home. The safety was signed by the
Indianapolis Colts, joining a slew of other Buckeye defenders, including rookie Malik Hooker,
Johnathan Hankins,
Jack Mewhort and
John Simon.
Things have not gone according to plan for the former Buckeye, who was initially expected to be among the historic
2015 NFL draft class out of Ohio State. Instead, seven rounds of picks went by without
Powell hearing his name. It wasn’t that teams weren’t interested; several called immediately following the draft to get the safety signed as an undrafted free agent.
Ultimately, he chose to join the Legion of Boom in Seattle, with some of the leagues most notable secondary players:
Richard Sherman,
Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas. Powell ended up seeing more playing time on special teams than on defense, and also spent weeks pinging between active and inactive status on game days.
Despite being released before the
Seahawks’ first game of the postseason, Powell still
maintains a close — and funny — relationship with Sherman, who could offer some valuable experience to the young player trying to navigate a rocky start in the NFL.

It was only a few weeks after being released by Seattle, that Powell was signed by his hometown
Browns. Having the Buckeye suiting up once again in Ohio was a good storyline, but didn’t last long. The Browns ended up releasing Powell on June 9th,
just hours before he was set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Cleveland Indians game. The Buckeye kept his commitment, despite the inherent awkwardness that ensued.
Things haven’t exactly been smooth sailing for the fan-favorite Buckeye thus far in his NFL endeavors, but he’s got at least one more shot to make his talents known and utilized at the next level.
