Huge rushes by Mike Weber in the first half put the Buckeyes up for good.

It appears that the Ohio State Buckeyes are back.

Urban Meyer’s crew seemed to turn the page following last week’s loss to Iowa on the road, and came back with a furious vengeance against the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday afternoon inside Ohio Stadium. Behind 500-plus total offensive yards, the Buckeyes trounced the Spartans, 48-3, in front of 107,011 in attendance.

Mike Weber led the OSU rushing effort, going off for 162 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Both of Weber’s TDs came off chunk carries: his first carry of the game was a 47-yard score, and in the second quarter, he took off for an 82-yard TD.

J.K. Dobbins got more than the six carries he had last week. Actually, he got a lot more carries than last week—three-times more in fact. Eighteen carries for 124 yards was what he ended with against the Spartans.

Quarterback J.T. Barrett got back into a groove before being pulled for Dwayne Haskins in the fourth quarter. Barrett went 14-of-21 passing, and lobbed 183 yards and two TDs. The Buckeye signal-caller also threw two interceptions, too.

Ohio State’s defense throttled Brian Lewerke and the Spartan offense. For the entire game, OSU registered six sacks, and held MSU to 195 total yards. Lewerke, who had 400-yard passing performances in the last two weeks against Northwestern and Penn State, struggled to find receivers. He ended the afternoon 18-of-36 throwing, and only picked up 131 passing yards. Like Barrett, Lewerke threw two picks.

The 45-point win deviates from the close contests we’re accustomed to seeing between the two schools in the Meyer-Mark Dantonio era. This win was historic, as it marks the biggest win Ohio State has ever captured over Michigan State, breaking a 42-point win from 1979.

Ohio State now controls their destiny in the Big Ten East, as they are now the outright leader. The Buckeyes improved to 8-2 on the season, and play their final home game next Saturday against Illinois.

Here’s the play-by-play recap of the game:

On the opening kickoff, Blake Haubeil nearly kicked the ball out of bounds, however, the ball bounced it’s way into the near corner of the endzone—claiming the touchback. Michigan State picked up a solid 20 yards via an L.J. Scott carry on the second play of their drive. Filling in at one of the spots left by the injured linebacking duo of Dante Booker and Jerome Baker, Malik Harrison rushed up the gap and brought down Lewerke for a sack. Facing a fourth-and-2, the Big Ten’s version of the Mad Hatter, Mark Dantonio, went for the first down, utilizing a Lewerke sneak up the middle. After getting the first down, the Buckeye defense clamped down, securing another sack, courtesy of Nick Bosa, and ultimately forced a Spartan punt.

Starting their first drive from their own 14, J.T. Barrett picked up 11 yards on an options keep; a screen play to Dobbins out wide for seven yards. The no-huddle offense kept up the tempo, as on the next play, Dobbins rushed for 15 yards up the middle. Sensing the La Grange, Texas native having momentum, another rush was dialed up to him—again for seven yards. Working back to the passing game, an airmailed screen to Dobbins brought up a third-and-short scenario from the MSU 47. Mike Weber made his first appearance of the day, and made it memorable: he went right up the middle, and was practically untouched by Spartan defenders as he sprinted all the way for a touchdown.

It took six plays to march 86 yards, and was done in only 1:19. Ohio State jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 8:10 left in the first quarter.

Sparty’s second drive was met with a Buckeye defense that was determined to avenge last week’s poor performance against Iowa. Scott picked up two yards on a rush toward the right tackle, but that was about it. Two Lewerke incompletions and a false start capped off the three and out, and Michigan State was forced to punt again. Punter Jake Hartbarger didn’t get a solid kick—it went about 40 yards in the air—but it did bounce it’s way to complete a 54-yard punt.

usa_today_10403739.jpg
Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports
Uh, hold the line...please: Lewerke was pressured for virtually the whole game, and was sacked 3 times.

With the ball on the OSU 29, the Buckeyes’ looked to get back to their scoring ways. That’s a good belief to have, but that went out the window after a snap to Barrett, who was in the shotgun formation, sailed over his head, setting the Bucks back 17 yards. Fast forward two plays later, and the Scarlet and Gray nearly had their punt blocked; a roughing the kicker penalty was called on the Spartans, much to the slightly morose crowd.

Lewerke continued to throw toward Buckeye defensive backs rather than to his own receivers, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Another three and out was conceived, giving the home team the ball for their third drive of the quarter.

Thanks to a 25-yard reception by Parris Campbell, the offense kept up the tempo on the Spartans. Dobbins was given the rock four times on the drive, and picked up 20 total yards. Barrett-designed keeps pushed the Buckeyes back into the land of touchdowns, as the final play of the drive was a Barrett scamper into the South end zone from 4 yards out.

Michigan State didn’t do themselves any favors on the kickoff, as they returned it to their own 5-yard line. Lewerke then sent two passes to Cody White—both incompletions. The 6-foot-3 sophomore QB came back down to Earth in the first 15 minutes in Columbus; he ended the quarter with seven straight incomplete passes.

At the end of the first quarter, Ohio State held a 14-0 lead.

That lead was about to increase. A combination of Sparty coming out flat plus OSU being hell-bent on making up for last week’s shortcomings put the Buckeyes back on track for another scoring drive. Weber got six drives on this series, but the end result was the same: a Barrett keep right into the end zone.

Dobbins and Weber were finally getting rushes, and this stat evoked some emotions of what could’ve been if the RBs were utilized last week in Iowa City:

Dobbins-Weber carries:
vs. Penn State 20.
vs. Iowa 11.
vs. Michigan State so far in 19 minutes - 15.

— Doug Lesmerises (@DougLesmerises) November 11, 2017

Uncharastically bad today, Lewerke (and the Spartans) doubled down. Now down 21, the QB rolled out on a third down, and had Buckeye defenders hot on his heels. Lewerke cut up the field and was tackled short of the first down marker, however, he didn’t have the ball; Tyquan Lewis poked the ball out when he wrapped up the Big Ten’s East Lansing signal caller, and Damon Arnette scooped it up. The fumble happened on the MSU 25, and it took just a few plays for Barrett to connect with Dobbins for a 10-yard score.

With 9:05 left before halftime, we were well on our way into blowout territory...

...And by the 6:16 mark, we entered blowout territory.

Sparty kept flailing, and the Buckeyes kept on trouncing. Following a six (!) play drive that went for 12 yards, Michigan State had a small silver lining to be proud of: they snapped their streak of four straight drives that only had three “real” plays. (They had three straight three-and-outs, and then the fumble.)

That silver lining went poof real fast, as on the first play after punting back to OSU, Weber went right up broadway, and took a full sprint 82 yards to the house. He shook off a blocker at the line of scrimmage, and participated in a foot race against would be tacklers.

It seemed that Ohio State was doing everything right. But in the waning minutes of the half, some miscues came up. Dre’Mont Jones hit Lewerke late, and was hit with the targeting ejection. After that Michigan State drive stalled, thanks to an Arnette interception, Ohio State committed their first turnover of the game: a Barrett interception. Bad news came shortly after, though, as Damon Arnette went down with a leg injury. He was carted off the field—so it doesn’t appear to be good.

As halftime finally appeared, the Spartans were able to get on the board with a 37-yard field goal from Matt Coghlin.

On the rushing front, it was a phenomenal half for the Buckeyes. Take a look at these stats:

In comparison: Michigan State had 104 total yards.

On top of the 253 rush yards, the Buckeyes had 67 yards of passing from Barrett. Unlike weeks past, OSU only committed one penalty in the first 30 minutes of play.

Lewerke, who entered the game after two straight weeks of 400-plus yard performances, walked into halftime with 49 yards of passing and a pick on 8-of-22 throwing.

Would things start off differently in the second half?

Narrator: No, things would not.

Ohio State jumped out on the scoreboard, again. This time, the way to six points was through the air. Two plays after a Dobbins nine-yard rush and Marcus Baugh completion of zero yards—that actually turned into 15 free yards because of an Andrew Dowell facemask—the Buckeyes found paydirt. Barrett threw up a deep-ball pass to Binjimen Victor, who was able to create separation from his defender as the ball made its way to his hands. Victor hauled in the pass, stepped over his diving defenseman, and waltzed right into the South end zone. Just like that, a 48-yard TD was recorded, capping off a three-play, 72-yard drive.

Unlike OSU, MSU sported a three-and-out on their first second half drive. That drive featured another Lewerke sack, and another Scott rush for a pittance worth of real estate. The Spartans punted the ball back to the Buckeyes, who would then march their way down deep into the red zone.

To get there, the drive was dominated by Dobbins, who broke off a nice 35-yard rush, en route to setting up a Sean Nuernberger FG from 27 yards out. He netted the kick, helping the Buckeyes edge ever so slightly to a 50-point plateau.

9:12 left in the third frame, and Ohio State held onto a sturdy 42-point lead, 45-3. Another field goal by Nuernberger would go in late in the third quarter, and that would wrap up the scoring in Columbus.

The final: Ohio State 48, Michigan State 3.

Next Saturday, Ohio State faces Illinois in a rivalry game for the famed Illibuck Trophy.

The Buckeyes are down two more defenders at halftime against Sparty.

Ohio State is currently demolishing Michigan State 35-3, but as the teams head into halftime, the Buckeyes are down another two defenders. Already without Jerome Baker and Dante Booker -- as announced before kickoff — Dre’mont Jones was ejected with three minutes left in the second quarter thanks to a very questionable targeting call followed shortly by Damon Arnette going down with an apparent leg injury.

With the second and third-team rosters likely to see some playing time, the loss of the additional two defenders shouldn’t be immediately seen. Jones will be back next week since his ejection came in the first half, but Arnette could be a lengthier situation.

The injury did not look great. Arnette initially popped up from the weird angle hit to finish out the play, but then quickly took a seat. He wasn’t able to put pressure on his left leg as he exited the field.

Ohio State's Damon Arnette has been taken to the hospital for X-rays, according to @MattyAOSU on @971thefan.

— Lori Schmidt (@LoriSchmidt) November 11, 2017

So far today, Arnette has made two interceptions — only one counted thanks to a penalty — but he’s been a huge playmakers against the Spartans.

We’ll keep you updated with any news of Arnette’s injury as it becomes available.

The Buckeyes will be without two of their linebackers in this Big Ten East competition.

In what is expected to be one of the biggest games of the season for Ohio State, the defense — who is already expected to be tested against Michigan State QB Brian Lewerke — will now be without Jerome Baker and Dante Booker, according to Patrick Murphy of 247Sports.

The Buckeyes are expected to release a statement closer to kick-off about the sudden personnel decision.

Last week’s loss to Iowa spotlighted some of the problem areas for the linebacker corp, which came as a bit of a surprise as Baker has been a leader on the defense in his second-year as a starter. He’s tied for second-most tackles for Ohio State this season and usually makes things difficult for opposing quarterbacks with pass breakups and tight coverage.

With Baker and Booker sitting this one out, Malik Harrison, Tuf Borland and Keandre Jones should see additional snaps, with Chris Worley either keeping his spot or moving over to the outside — where he played 13 games last season.

In a recent series defined by upsets and road team wins, Urban Meyer holds a 3-2 edge over Mark Dantonio’s Spartans

"When your foot is on that jugular, you have to kill that fool.” No. 1 Ohio State had just dispatched an unranked Michigan State team in Columbus, and offensive tackle Kirk Barton was in no mood for niceties. It was understandable, the Buckeyes had survived their first test of the season. And it really shouldn’t have been a test at all.

Prior to Michigan State, things had come easy for the 2007 Buckeyes. In their first seven games, the most difficult opponent on paper turned out to be a breeze. The Buckeyes jumped to a 23-0 lead against No. 20 Purdue, cruising to a 23-7 victory at night in West Lafayette, Ind.

So it wasn’t Ohio State’s first rodeo when they found themselves out to a big 24-0 lead against Michigan State. It was no surprise that first-year Spartan head coach Mark Dantonio was over-matched against OSU’s superior talent. Join the club.

But then something surprising did happen. Michigan State scored two defensive touchdowns in 56 seconds. And OSU dogged a bullet on the first play of the next drive, as two Spartan defenders couldn’t get a handle on a Chris ‘Beanie’ Wells fumble. At the gun, the Buckeyes walked away the victors 24-17 to improve to 8-0 overall.

While it was just one game, the closing Spartan surge would be a sign of the competitive series to come. And ten years later, that 2007 game remains the last time Ohio State beat Michigan State in Columbus.

Since Urban Meyer arrived at OSU in 2012, he and Mark Dantonio have squared off in a five-year war. Sparty remains the only Big Ten program during that span to beat Meyer multiple times, and the only other Big Ten program to make the College Football Playoff. Even so, Meyer holds a 3-2 head-to-head series edge. A series that has been characterized by three trends.

1) The games are always competitive, and typically razor-close. Three games have been decided by three points or less, two by a single point. In the five contests, Ohio State has scored 121 total points, Michigan State has scored 120. There’s been little separation between these two programs on game day.

2) The home team loses. The home team is 0-4. Ohio State has won three on the road, while Michigan State has scored the biggest road upset — upending the undefeated 14-point favorite Buckeyes in 2015 (Sparty also holds a 1-0 mark on a neutral field with the Big Ten Championship game victory in 2013). So much for home field advantage.

3) The favorite almost always loses. The bookies in Vegas don’t care about recent series history. Maybe they should. In the Dantonio-Meyer era, only once has the favorite actually won the game outright (and never has the favorite covered the spread). Last year was the only time the favorite came through to win — OSU was favored by 21 and won by a single point.

Coming off a game in Iowa where little went right, the Buckeyes stand as more than two touchdown favorites against Michigan State. Better OSU teams under Meyer have tripped up trying to put the foot on Sparty’s jugular. A series that has consistently upended expectations may be poised to do so once more.

The Buckeyes are looking for redemption against a resurgent Michigan State squad.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off the worst loss of Urban Meyer’s career, but have a chance to redeem themselves against an always-tough Michigan State squad in Columbus. It is not often that Meyer loses two games in a row, though the two touchdowns the Buckeyes are favored by seems somewhat wishful.

Mark Dantonio and the Spartans have been the Achilles to Meyer’s squad. Michigan State is 2-3 against the Buckeyes under Meyer’s regime--the best record of any conference foe. They come to Columbus having defeated Penn State in a fashion not quote as dramatic as the Buckeyes’ win the week prior.

While Brian Lewerke and Michigan State’s offense has been turning heads lately, the heart of the Spartans remains their staunch defense. The unit is allowing a Big Ten-best 87 yards rushing per game. This week, they will have their hands full with J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber, who Meyer will need to rush more than he did last week against the Hawkeyes.

When is the game and how can I watch?

After a disastrous visit to Kinnick Stadium, the Buckeyes will return to Columbus to try to salvage their season against Michigan State. Like the Iowa game, this will be another trap game with huge implications involving a potential conference title game berth.

Michigan State is coming to Columbus after defeating #7 Penn State at home with a last second FG and Ohio State is coming back home after getting blown out by an unranked Iowa team that forced J.T. Barrett to uncharacteristically turn the ball over 4 times via interceptions.

This installment of Michigan State versus Ohio State will feature two 7-2 teams that are both 5-1 in conference play that are both looking to claim first place in the East. Dantonio has been a thorn in Meyer’s side and he holds two victories over Meyer.

This game is just as dangerous for the Buckeyes because in big time, big implication types of games, the Buckeyes coaches tend to get too cute for comfort and they forget that their tailbacks are dangerously and good. This usually leads to losses, whether close or in blowout fashion and these Spartans have beaten the Buckeyes when they cannot afford to take a loss.

There are many storylines for the Buckeyes in the game but the main one will be focused on J.T. Barrett and if he can move past last weeks game. Another dominant story would be can the Silver Bullets recover and be dominant once again because they were horrible last week after letting the opposing TE’s have a field day? Will the RB’s get the ball would be another one to add to the list too.

On the other side, Lewerke is coming off of consecutive 400 passing yard games and will look to dice up the Ohio State secondary. Will L.J. Scott run wild again against the LB’s who looked confused the entire game? Will the Spartan defense achieve the same results as the Hawkeye defense?

Prediction

Too many factors and variables make it difficult to accurately predict the outcome of this game, but apparently, this game will have an angry Ohio State team that is looking to salvage their season, but that does not amount to much.

We have seen these “angry” games that were too close for comfort, so I will not buy into it this week. I foresee another questionable gameplan with uber-conservative playcalling. A balance in play calling will be there but check down passes will be featured a lot to prevent turnovers.

Buckeyes squeak out a win 24-21.

The Buckeyes go on the road and take down the Huskies.

Last weekend, Ryan Nanni, aka @celebrityhottub on Twitter, put a 1950s UConn logo on the dot of the I in Script Ohio after the football team was embarrassed at Ohio. But this weekend, the hockey Buckeyes beat UConn themselves, 5-4.

Revenge, or the best the hockey team could do!

That’s right: the No. 17 Puckeyes went to Hartford and defeated Hockey East’s Huskies by a score of 5-4. Any road win against a major conference opponent is valuable, and that is especially so for the now 6-3-2 Buckeyes, as they were swept last weekend in Columbus by Notre Dame.

This one was a back and forth affair where OSU never trailed but sure seemed like they wanted to give it a try, just to see how it handled. Ohio State had leads of 3-2, 4-3 and 5-4 but never allowed UConn to tie it and never trailed in any of the sixty minutes.

It sure didn’t look like it’d be that close, however. Ohio State stormed out to a 3-0 lead by the 4:13 mark of the second. Matthew Weis scored just 40 seconds into the game, with assists from Tanner Laczynski and Sasha Larocque. Matt wasn’t done however, as he scored his second of the game at 7:57, with Laczynski and Gordi Myer credited with the assists.

OSU went into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead and 11-7 advantage in shots despite leading for 19:20 of the first and it sure seemed like this one would be a laugher once Dakota Joshua made it 3-0 at 4:13 of the second. Mason Jobst found his way back to the scoresheet with the primary assist, while Matt Miller had the secondary apple.

Then UConn decided this wasn’t fun anymore.

The Huskies scored goals at 8:59 and 18:41 of the second to make it 3-2 going into the third, all of a sudden. UConn scored on a deflection and a reviewed goal and yet, those still count and the lead was down to one. It would’ve been tied had OSU freshman goalie Tommy Nappier, in his first collegiate start, not stopped a UConn penalty shot in the second.

Nappier wouldn’t be able to harness that penalty shot magic into regular game play, as UConn would score again despite Ohio State extending the lead to 4-2 in the third. Just 3:58 into the third, Jobst made it a two goal OSU lead once again, seeming to quell the Husky threat, until UConn came clawing back again to make it 4-3 on a goal by Jesse Schwartz.

Ohio State again extended the lead, this time to 5-3, once again trying to put away the Huskies, as Christian Lampasso scored his second of the year to grow the lead once again. Myer and Joshua had the assists. But UConn wouldn’t die and put in another one to make it 5-4 with just 2:46 remaining in the game.

It could’ve been worse, too. Ohio State had to kill off a five minute major power play for UConn, after Lampasso, deciding his goal needed to be undone, was sent off with a game misconduct and major penalty for hitting from behind. OSU would find a way to kill that off though, before giving up that fourth goal. Talk about dodging a bullet.

The Huskies pulled the goalie for the extra attacker but couldn’t beat Nappier and the No. 17 Buckeyes squeaked out with a win.

UConn absolutely dominated the last two periods of this game, something you don’t want to see when you’re a ranked team, 3-0 lead or not. But OSU has shown a tendency to sink into a shell and it very well might have cost them against a more talented team tonight.

In the second and third, OSU was outshot 19-4 and 13-5, respectively, something you wouldn’t expect if they played the No. 1 team in the nation, much less 3-8-1 UConn. OSU has to keep pushing the offensive envelope against inferior teams if they want to make any conference or national noise this year. They showed they could dominate in the first tonight. They just have to do it for an entire game, regardless of the score.

But the Buckeyes will have a chance to sweep the Huskies on Saturday regardless of UConn’s domination, as the two teams play again in Hartford at 3:35 p.m. ET.
