The Buckeyes: still mathematically in contention!

Rumors of Ohio State's demise have, it seems, been greatly exaggerated.

The Buckeyes—on the heels of a few very interesting weeks in college football—have climbed back to No. 9 in the College Football Playoff rankings, and while they'll need some help to have a shot at a spot in the final four, they're not out of it yet.

As of this week's new rankings, the top four teams remain Alabama, Clemson, Miami (FL), and Oklahoma, respectively. But there's plenty of room for advancement within those ranks for the teams on the outside looking in. Georgia (No. 7) will still play the winner of Alabama-Auburn (No. 6) in the SEC Championship Game, leading to all kinds of chaos potential. Miami and Clemson will meet for the ACC title in a few weeks, meaning one of them will fall out of contention. (If you're a Buckeye fan, pull for Alabama and Miami to make unblemished runs of it.)

In Big Ten news, unbeaten Wisconsin is also hanging out just outside the top spots at No. 5. They'll be just about guaranteed a playoff spot if they can upset Ohio State in a few weeks, provided the Buckeyes make a clean getaway from Ann Arbor on Saturday; meanwhile, Ohio State's hopes hinge on a few specific scenarios that won't matter a bit if they can't string together back-to-back wins to close out the schedule. (A little help from Stanford in felling No. 8 Notre Dame wouldn't hurt, either.)

The full rankings are below. Does Ohio State have a prayer?

LGHL 'The Spot' helped define Ohio State's 2016 season

'The Spot' helped define Ohio State's 2016 season

usa_today_9731497.0.jpg

Though the end of the season didn’t go as planned, the Buckeyes made some memories in The Game.

“It's a highlight. It's a controversial play, and something that was a defining moment in our season. The play could've gone either way. It could have been a defining moment either way. The work that went in behind it on both sides of the ball, whether you're on their side or our side, whatever type of work you put into it -- that was a defining moment in the game.”

- Billy Price via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Everyone remembers last season’s edition of The Game. Ohio State and Michigan were both ranked in the top three in the country and played a close game wire-to-wire until overtime was forced - incredibly, the first overtime series history. And in double overtime, Ohio State would face a fourth-and-one from Michigan’s 16-yard line.

The rest is history.

J.T. Barrett would just edge over the first down marker, and after a close review, “The Spot” was, in fact, good. One play later, Curtis Samuel raced into the endzone to give the Buckeyes a walk-off win over Michigan.

That fourth down play helped define the 2016 season for Ohio State, with all the ups and downs the Buckeyes faced. The late-season loss to Penn State, and then the eventual win over Michigan helped push Urban Meyer’s team into the College Football Playoff. Now Ohio State is in a similar position and a spot in the Big Ten championship locked up.

Will the Buckeyes make some more memories in Ann Arbor?

“The Buckeyes have already clinched the East, but if they lose in Ann Arbor to rival Michigan on Saturday and then beat the Badgers to win the conference championship game, the Big Ten might be left out entirely.”

- Heather Dinich, ESPN

Heather Dinich of ESPN went through the dream and nightmare scenarios for each Power Five conference and the Big Ten’s scenarios are pretty clear-cut. The dream scenario would be for Wisconsin to win out the remaining schedule and be included in the top four for the College Football Playoff. That would mean defeating Minnesota and then Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game. The nightmare scenario has Ohio State losing to Michigan (nightmare indeed) and proceeding to the Big Ten championship game and upsetting an unbeaten Wisconsin team that is already on the fringe of the playoffs.

Of course, these two situations also don’t show another outcome - both Ohio State and Wisconsin win out to the Big Ten championship game and then the Buckeyes defeat the Badgers. They would still need some outside help, which is why this isn’t the dream scenario for the Big Ten, but Ohio State could certainly greatly improve their resume for the College Football Playoff.

“Michigan's best receivers this season have been tight ends. But when Ward is out covering a receiver, the guy he'll likely be assigned to most often is Peoples-Jones.”

- Tim Bielek, Cleveland.com

The Game is just days away and Tim Bielek looked at a key matchup for Saturday’s game: Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward against Michigan wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones. The 6-foot-2 receiver provides plenty of headaches when it comes to mismatches with the small secondary that the Buckeyes have, but Ward could have the speed to make up for it as Peoples-Jones isn’t known for his burst. And to add to that, the Wolverines have struggled throwing the ball - especially to the wide outs. The best receivers on the team are tight ends, but Peoples-Jones is capable of making big plays as seen against Wisconsin and Air Force.

On the season, Peoples-Jones has only 16 catches for 219 yards but does have three touchdowns to his name. Meanwhile, Ward has been the Buckeyes’ best defensive back this year and has played well when it counts. He blocked a punt against Penn State to help spark a comeback, and also has an interception as well. This matchup could help define how well the game goes for either team and will be one to watch.

The Buckeye quarterback put on a show in The ‘Shoe for the final time.

J.T. Barrett had a prototypical J.T. Barrett game in his curtain call at the Horseshoe. The three-time captain was highly efficient in both the run game and the pass game, and orchestrated a beat down on the Illini in a little over a quarter and a half of action before handing the game over to the future of the program.

Barrett was poised throughout the matchup, taking what the defense gave him on the ground and through the air. He was masterful in the zone read and was able to go through his progressions when he dropped back to throw the ball. Even though Illinois is the worst team they’ve played this season, we are going to miss these types of games from the quarterback, where he had total control of the offense and made the players around him better.

  • Barrett’s numbers don’t jump off the chart, but just like the Michigan State game, he wasn’t asked to be the sole playmaker. Instead, he was asked to make the smart decision and exploit the Illini defense. Out of his eight incompletions, four of those were throw-aways and one was dropped.
  • I really enjoyed this wrinkle that Kevin Wilson called three times — all resulting in positive yardage. Parris Campbell came across the line of scrimmage in jet motion, forcing the man-corner to get stuck in the rubbish in the middle of the field, before Barrett hit Campbell on a bubble screen. The outside slot receiver ran a slant/pick pattern to disrupt the trailing defender, leaving Campbell open to make a play after the catch. This works well against man coverage, but expect Michigan to switch on the motion if they run this play next week.
  • After limited handoffs to the running backs in their upset loss against Iowa, Wilson has gotten the ball to Weber or Dobbins 50 times in less than eight full quarters of action. Dobbins has been his usual self, but Weber has been terrific — especially at the second level. Last season, Weber was known to be one shoestring tackle away from hitting the homerun, but in the last two games, Weber has been able to break that final tackle and take it to the house for six. Weber has racked up 270 yards on 20 carries in his prior two games. If I were a Vegas bookmaker, I would set pretty hefty odds that this was his final game in The ‘Shoe.
  • This has only been written 1,000 times, but Barrett is just so damn good at the zone read and that will be the most noticeable downgrade after his departure. It looks like he’s reading the end in slow-motion, before making his decision whether to keep the ball, or hand it off. Below is just another example of him putting on a clinic.
  • It probably wouldn’t have made a difference since the defense gave up 55 points, but not having Parris Campbell really hurt the offense in that loss against Iowa. He reminded fans throughout the afternoon that he’s the second most talented player on the offense and has the potential to make an electric play whenever the ball is in his hands. K.J. Hill, Johnnie Dixon and Austin Mack might be better pure receivers, but Campbell is excellent after the catch on the quick hitters — which really open up the run game and the intermediate/deep routes.
  • Barrett was taken out of the game late in the second quarter, but Urban Meyer put him back into the game after Dwayne Haskins led two negative drives -- the latter resulting in a fumble returned for a touchdown. It looked careless at the time, but sometimes you just have to chalk it up to a good play by the defender. Haskins held the ball properly, but the defender got his helmet on the ball, resulting in the forced fumble.
haskins_1.jpg

haskins_2.jpg

  • When Barrett came back in, he quickly got the Buckeyes into the end zone after an Illinois muffed punt. Wilson dialed up this creative throwback to the tight end, which started with Marcus Baugh delaying his route, then scooting to the other side of the wide open field. It was a great play design that took advantage of an over-aggressive defense.

It’s Beat Michigan week, and most Buckeye fans are born with fandom in their blood. The same can be said about Scarlett (I mean, how appropriate is that name) who just couldn’t be bothered using a Michigan pacifier. Instead, she waits for her Mom, Kelly McLay, to swap it out with some Ohio State gear.

Scarlett’s Dad, John McLay, is a Cleveland native who graduated from dental school at Ohio State in 2005. A client of Kelly’s was a Michigan law school grad, and gifted the couple a bunch of TTUN gear as a joke when Scarlett was born.

All we know, is Scarlett already has impeccable taste in football allegiances.

usa_today_10422015.0.jpg

The history and importance of ‘The Game’ were the main talking points.

The Ohio State Buckeyes roll into the final week of the regular season with the Big Ten East crown on their heads, and a real shot at making the College Football Playoff if a few things go their way.

After a 52-14 Senior Day win against Illinois, the Buckeyes are on the road to take on their archrival: Michigan.

It’s Michigan Week, and Urban Meyer knows it—as does the rest of Buckeye Nation. At Monday’s press conference, Meyer went over the rivalry, and what to expect going into Saturday’s contest in Ann Arbor.

Let’s breakdown the four biggest points from that presser inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

“This rivalry is not a one-week deal. It's, hey, let's get this thing going -- and I learned that from Woody Hayes, from Earle Bruce, from Jim Tressel.”

Getting ready for Michigan isn't a one week process; you're working on getting ready for beginning at the start of camp. In the state of Ohio, you know how important the game is, so you dedicate the appropriate amount of time to it.

That's what Meyer stressed to the media: This isn't a one week kind of deal. Throughout time, the current Buckeye head coach has learned from some of the other great OSU coaches on how important this game is.

Woody Hayes coached the Buckeyes during the "golden age" of the rivalry— in essence, the Ten Year War— against Bo Schembechler. Overall, Woody won more games than he lost to UM, going 16-11-1. In 1968, Hayes coached the No. 1 Buckeyes to a blowout win over the No. 4 Wolverines, 50-14. That win punched Ohio State’s ticket to the Rose Bowl against USC, the de facto national championship game that year. However, in 1969, OSU was on the verge of back-to-back undefeated seasons, but lost to The Team Up North in Ann Arbor. The 24-12 loss was the only “L” on the season for Hayes’ Buckeyes, and, arguably, the toughest loss to Michigan in his career.

Leading into Michigan Week 1987, Earle Bruce learned that he was to be fired after “The Game.” While some were shocked and angered by the announcement, Bruce was able to coach the Buckeyes one last time, leading to a stunning victory against the Wolverines in his final game. When all was said and done, he went 5-4 against his main rival.

Jim Tressel went 9-1 against the combination of Lloyd Carr and Rich Rodriguez. The 2006 edition of “The Game” was dubbed the “Game of the Century.” In that one, The Vest secured a 42-39 win against No. 2 Michigan behind a Heisman-esque performance from Troy Smith.

Those three coaches all ended with above-.500 records against Michigan. Meyer is 5-0 right now, but to get there, it helps when your predecessors showed you how it’s done.

“That's the foundation of any good offense, the offensive line. We were blessed for three or four years having the best in the Big Ten and then we did it.”

A common mantra in football is “defense wins championships.” While that may be true, you also need an offense that can at least score some points. In the Meyer era at Ohio State, running backs have had 1,000 yard seasons, and quarterbacks have flourished. For those two components of the offense to work, you need an offensive line that can protect.

Meyer went over that core element during his presser on Monday. From Pat Elflein, to Taylor Decker, to Billy Price, the Bucks have had NFL-grade talent protecting the QB and opening paths for the RBs.

Ohio State’s dominance in the Big Ten has been due in large part to having one of the most prolific scoring offenses in the country. In the J.T. Barrett years, over 30 QB records have been broken, ranging from total touchdowns to passing yards. Without an efficient and durable offensive line, Barrett doesn’t get to the top of those lists.

Reading between the lines, you can tell what one of the most important recruiting positions is for Meyer: the O-line. Looking at the 2018 class and beyond, someone on that list of commits will become the next man up in a position that has sent many to the NFL.

The question is, who’s next?

“I think especially when you come here on visits and you start seeing them, once again something's not right if you're walking through the hallways and you don't recognize this rivalry and the respect we have for it.”

While we are still on the topic of recruiting, Meyer talked about what he’s looking for in a potential Buckeye. One of the things he’s looking for deals with whether or not the recruit understands the magnitude of the rivalry.

Understanding what it means to play in “The Game” is important, but this opens up another door into the world of Ohio State’s recruiting methods. Since Meyer came to Columbus, OSU has been an NFL factory. Alabama is the football factory for the southern, hot/humid weather schools; Ohio State is the NFL factory for the northern, cold weather programs.

Recruits, who are teenagers, recognize this. If you were a top rated player leaving high school and have ambitions of going to the NFL, you would want to be either a Buckeye or a member of the Crimson Tide. However, you may not have the same appreciation for the rivalries, traditions, and history as someone who grew up in the thick of those states.

The quote from Meyer is telling, in a good way, about what he wants in a recruit. He wants someone who wants to be a Buckeye. He wants someone who understands the rivalry, and appreciates the meaning of taking part in it.

Especially since OSU is a national brand and recruits from all corners of the country, some kids could be coming to Columbus just for the NFL chances, not because they truly want to be a member of the Scarlet and Gray. It appears that one of Meyer’s litmus tests in determining whether or not someone is right for the program is a simple one: do you understand this rivalry.

“Yeah, they're going to be a downhill rushing team. That's pretty much been their MO.”

Now, to focus on this Michigan team.

With injuries, the quarterback situation has become a complicated one in Ann Arbor. Since the start of the season, three different QBs have taken snaps under center. On top of that, passing TDs to actual receivers have not been part of the game plan. Tight end Sean McKeon and Zach Gentry are leading the team with two(!) receiving TDs apiece. Both McKeon and Gentry have been shuffled around the offense, as both have shown up in the wide receiver and TE portions of the depth chart.

Inconsistency in the passing game leads to the passing option not being their forte. It’s been a running back show—with Karan Higdon leading the way. This season, Higdon has 874 yards and 10 TDs on 136 carries. However, Higdon missed the Wisconsin game this past Saturday due to an ankle injury.

Speaking of injuries against the Badgers, Brandon Peters, their current starting QB, was knocked out of the game and was carted off the field in Madison, Wisc. He is currently int he concussion protocol.

Right now, Michigan’s clinging to a run game with a decimated offense. Meyer knows that the run game is, basically, the only thing that Michigan has going for them—assuming Peters is out this week.

The Buckeyes are going to have to find room to run against a team that's been awfully stingy with it.

It's that time of year again.

Thursday is reserved for giving thanks, but the rest of this week—Ohio State-Michigan week—is for pure hatred and tribalism. Allow us here at Land-Grant Holy Land to cut that raw spite with a little bit of level-headed analysis, just for today. (We've got plenty of the other stuff, too.)

There are about a million threads that could be unpacked with regards to The Game; for now we'll focus on the aspect of the offense that's been Ohio State's bread and butter for the entirety of the Urban Meyer era: the rushing attack.

The stats

Name: J.K. Dobbins

Number: 2

Position: RB

Year: Freshman

Height/Weight: 5'10, 208 lbs.

Line: 149 carries, 1089 yards, 6 TDs; 18 catches, 123 yards, 1 TD

It's been an up-and-down year for the true freshman, who burst onto the scene in Ohio State's first game of the season with a 181-yard performance. His touches have been limited in a few key games, but little explanation has been given for his occasional disappearance from the Buckeye game plan. Still, he's crossed the 1,000-yard threshold and proven himself to be a vital cog in the rushing attack—a piece that Urban Meyer will sorely need against a team as loaded on defense as Michigan.

Opposition research

For the sixth time in the last eight games, Ohio State is poised to take the field against a team whose defense is laughably superior to its offense. (Note Iowa's 21st-ranked defense, which makes the Buckeyes' struggles in that game a little more understandable, even as the Hawkeyes' 113th-ranked offense hanging 55 on them remains inscrutable.) Michigan enters Saturday's contest with the country's No. 8 defense by S&P+, a unit that has been the saving grace of a team with just the 69th-best offense in college football.

The Wolverines have no shortage of terrifying talents on the defensive side of the ball. They're especially ferocious at the line of scrimmage, where five different players have recorded 14 or more run stuffs, a group paced by DL Maurice Hurst's jaw-dropping 20 stuffs. (For reference, the leading Buckeye run-stuffer, Sam Hubbard, has nine.)

It's not just the big guys wreaking havoc behind the line of scrimmage, either. Khaleke Hudson, who plays the same hybrid LB-DB "Viper" position that Jabrill Peppers occupied last year, has given opposing teams fits in 2017. He has 15.5 TFLs and seven sacks on the season, numbers boosted by his astonishing eight TFL, three sack performance against Minnesota a few weeks ago. It was one of the best one-game efforts by a single player in Big Ten history.

Things don't get any rosier through the air. The Wolverines have the third-best passing defense, the No. 1 defense at preventing efficient passing, and the No. 3 third-down defense in the country. The Buckeyes have their work cut out for them.

What to watch for

One of the only places Michigan shows any weakness at all on defense is their tendency to give up explosive plays. The Wolverines, despite their otherwise-suffocating defensive presence, are just 116th in rushing defense IsoPPP and 93rd in passing defense IsoPPP (Football Outsiders' explosive plays metric). In other words, they're basically systematic drive-proof, but if you can find a seam, there's a good chance you might take the ball in for six.

Fortunately for Ohio State, both J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber are more than up to the challenge. The pair has combined for 1,634 rushing yards and 15 rushing TDs this season, and each of them has taken over games and dominated this season on long, footrace-style scores. And since H-back Parris Campbell's return from injury, they've found some success getting him the ball close to the line of scrimmage and letting him create his own space with his absurd speed.

It seems unlikely that the Buckeyes will be able to beat the Wolverines with the efficient, exhausting offense they've run so well all season—Jim Harbaugh's team is basically built to prevent that exact thing from happening. But Urban Meyer has so many weapons with home run potential that the problem might solve itself.
