The Buckeyes completed the season sweep of the Wolverines with their fourth straight win over Michigan this year

As usual, Michigan is hailing to the victors from Columbus, Ohio. That’s right: No. 6 Ohio State swept No. 17 Michigan this weekend with the 5-3 victory on Saturday night and completed the series sweep as the Buckeyes previously swept Michigan in November.

Ohio State has now won nine out of their last 10, and seven out of eight since the end of the winter break. Even more importantly, they now sit comfortably in second place in the Big Ten, opening up a six point lead on new third place team Wisconsin in conference play with just eight conference games to go.

Those eight games include showdowns with the No. 1 team in the country Notre Dame, Minnesota and Wisconsin, so it won’t be easy to hold onto that No. 2 spot. But with the way OSU has played since December, it’s hard to doubt them.

The best part was that this game was much more encouraging in terms of process than Friday night’s more impressive-on-paper 4-0 win against the Wolverines. On Friday night, Ohio State was outshot by 12 shots and the shutout from Sean Romeo made the game less interesting than it otherwise should’ve been.

Romeo would be solid in this one, saving 28/31 shots on goal, but it’d be Ohio State’s possession prior to the third period that gave the Buckeyes the real advantage, saving Romeo from having to put the team on his back once again.

OSU outshot Michigan 11-6 in the first and 11-7 in the second. Michigan would pump 18 shots on net to Ohio State’s seven in the third, but the Buckeyes were up by at least two goals for the entire period and score effects had taken over. An 18-7 mark in a scoreless first period would be cause for concern; an 18-7 mark when up multiple goals after dominating for the first two periods is excusable.

It actually looked like this one would be more complicated than the final score let on. Despite the shot totals in the first and second, it wouldn’t be until nearly three quarters of the way through the second that Ohio State would take a permanent lead.

Michigan actually struck first tonight, taking a page out of Ohio State’s Friday playbook and scoring first despite getting outshot. But Ohio State would get some luck Michigan couldn’t find on Friday.

Freddy Gerard shot a puck from about as safe an area as a goalie can ask for. Except Michigan goalie Hayden Lavigne let out a rebound that looked like it was knocked in by a way too casual Michigan defender standing in front of the goalie. Judge for yourself:

Gerard's first period goal - his eighth tally of the year - tied the game at one. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/RbYS97w2bI

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 28, 2018

No matter the cause, it was Gerard’s eighth of the year and Ohio State had this one tied up going into the first intermission.

The second period would be a back and forth affair for the first half and then Ohio State putting their foot down in the second. And it was once again Freddy Gerard who got it going, this time just 26 seconds into the second.

Michigan took the puck up the ice from deep in their own zone, but turned it over to Matthew Weis in the neutral zone. He stopped with one defender back and fed Tanner Laczynski across the netmouth. His shot was stopped, but Gerard was there to put in the rebound. The play looks crazier than I just made it sound. Gerard scored two weird ones tonight, but hey they still count.

That's how to start a Period! Less than 30-seconds in and OSU takes the lead.

— Ohio State on BTN (@OhioStateOnBTN) January 28, 2018

Michigan would answer with a goal at 9:57 of the second to tie it up once again, but it didn’t last long. Just over three minutes later, John Wiitala stole the puck in the offensive zone and fed Ronnie Hein in the slot. That was all she wrote:

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 28, 2018

Ohio State would lead for the rest of the game. But they weren’t done in the second. Just three and a half minutes after that, at 16:56, they struck again.

Brendon Kearney took a pass from the point, skated in to the top of the circles, and rifled it past Lavigne:

Kearney put the Buckeyes up 4-2 at 16:54 of the second, assisted by Ege. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/CfHfn5dxuw

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 28, 2018

Wyatt Ege set him up with a pass from the wall, allowing Kearney to score what would stand as the game winner.

In the third, Michigan would turn on the jets and pumped 18 shots on Sean Romeo, but it’d be too little, too late.

Mason Jobst effectively ended any minuscule chances of a Wolverine comeback, scoring an insurance goal at 11:48 of the third. Michigan would answer back with a score from the beautifully named Jake Slaker at 17:30, but it was over by that point.

Ohio State held on for the 5-3 victory and season sweep of that team up north. They improve to an astounding 17-5-4 on the season. If you would’ve told me two years ago that this team would be headed for the top-5 and sweeping Michigan, I would’ve thought you were crazy.

Either way, the Buckeyes face Michigan State next weekend and have to avoid looking ahead to the looming showdown with No. 1 Notre Dame the week after that. We’ll really see what this Buckeye team is made of if they can take care of business against the Spartans in Columbus and then earn a split at least with Notre Dame.

Crazier things have happened.

The Buckeyes continued their season long domination of the Wolverines with the victory on Friday night

The No. 6 Ohio State men’s hockey team blew out No. 17 Michigan, 4-0, on Friday night in Columbus. The Buckeyes are now 3-0 versus the Wolverines this season after sweeping them in Ann Arbor in November. The Buckeyes improve to 16-5-4 on the year overall and 9-5-1 in the Big Ten, while Michigan falls to 12-11-2 and 7-8-2-1 in conference.

Anyway, this one had good results for the Buckeyes, obviously, though the results kind of mask some of the issues with the process. Whether it was because Ohio State scored in the first (probably not since they didn’t score until 16:40 into the first) or were up by three early by the early part of the third, Michigan dominated in shots on goal. It can work once and awhile, but generally, a team getting outshot is not a recipe for success.

But when Sean Romeo stops all 32 shots he faces and Michigan goalie Hayden Lavigne looks like a boi on sk8s and allows four goals on 20 shots, the process isn’t going to matter too much. Lavigne could’ve made things more complicated if he’d stopped more, but when Romeo’s pitching a shutout, it’s really my happy ending. (Notice those Avril Lavigne songs slipped into that paragraph?)

Ohio State only registered seven shots on goal to Michigan’s 10 in the first, but the only one that found its way into the net was Kevin Miller’s, as he skated in on a two-on-one and took the shot on net when the defense took away the pass. Dakota Joshua and Tommy Parran had the assist.

Kevin Miller put the Buckeyes up 1-0 over the Wolverines with a goal in the first period. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/4IKlDwfASW

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 27, 2018

In the second, it’d be more of the same. Michigan would outshot OSU 14-7 but only an Ohio State shot would find the back of the net.

Tanner Laczynski received a drop pass to a wide open portion in front of Lavigne’s net from Matthew Weis and took the rare slot slapshot and blew it into the twine.

Laczynski's blast put the Buckeyes up 2-0 in the second period vs. UM. Weis and Jobst assisted on the PPG. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/t2GeLDrZn9

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 27, 2018

Mason Jobst had the secondary assist, but wouldn’t be done in this one.

Jobst would put the Buckeyes up 3-0 just 3:28 into the third as he broke away from the Michigan defense and pulled a deke on Lavigne that left the entire left side of the net wide open for the tap in. Hard to make it look easier than that, though you’d think Lavigne would realize that Jobst was definitely going back right since a Michigan defender was crashing down to his left.

Mason Jobst scored goal No. 12 on the year to put the Buckeyes up 3-0 in the third. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/gIbeK4dVr9

— Ohio State M Hockey (@OhioState_MHKY) January 27, 2018

His 12th of the year effectively put this one away. Dakota Joshua would add a goal of his own as he tipped a Matt Miller shot to make it 4-0 before the nine minute mark of the third. Michigan wouldn’t even register a single goal.

The process wasn’t great from the Buckeyes tonight, but when you get a sparkling performance from your consistently fantastic goalie and the offense is getting wide open slapshot opportunities in front of the net and breakaways, the process doesn’t matter as much.

The Buckeyes will look to once again defy the process on Saturday night when they host the Wolverines for the final time this regular season. They’ll look to sweep the season series in Columbus.

Plus, Ohio State women’s basketball returns to their home court after a road loss to No. 25 Iowa.

The first exclusive sit-down interview with Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel #TitanUp pic.twitter.com/n41alYnDVP

— Tennessee Titans (@Titans) January 25, 2018

The leading candidate in my mind for future-Ohio State head coach, Mike Vrabel, sat down to talk about his new position and opportunity with the Tennessee Titans. During his first official interview as the head coach, he made note of how important interviewing for these positions is, and how he used to be really bad at it.

“I bombed my first interview. Urban Meyer interviewed me and I bombed it,” Vrabel explained.

Following a successful collegiate and NFL career, Vrabel headed to the coaching side of things in July 2011. While his NFL career was already nearing the tail end, his decision to join Ohio State’s coaching staff was moreso done to help the program. Having lost Jim Tressel and a handful of starters thanks to #TattooGate, Vrabel joined the staff to help out his former teammate and close friend, interim coach Luke Fickell.

When Urban Meyer accepted the head coaching position at the end of the 2011 season, he interviewed Vrabel to see if he should be retained with the changing of the guard. It was this interview in December 2011 that went so badly, Meyer actually asked him to re-do it.

“Urban had faith in me, and he called me that night and said, ‘That’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen. I want you to come back tomorrow at 6 in the morning, and I want you to do it again.’ So I left the house, and went down and stayed in the office, stayed up all night, cleaned my thoughts up, got things in order, did the interview, and he hired me at Ohio State.”

The rest is history. Vrabel stayed in Columbus for a few seasons — coaching linebackers and then the defensive line — before joining the staff for the Houston Texans as the linebackers coach under (former Penn State head coach) Bill O’Brien. With rumors swirling ahead of the 2017 season that Vrabel could be eyed for a head coaching gig, the Texans instead promoted the Buckeye to defensive coordinator, before he ultimately got a chance to lead his own team in 2018.

“Stephanie Mavunga and Linnae Harper recorded double-doubles and Kelsey Mitchell scored 27 points but the Buckeyes just weren’t able to get over the hump and would fall on the road at No. 25 Iowa 103-89 on Thursday night.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

Despite the myriad of scorers the Buckeyes claim, Thursday’s matchup against No. 25 Iowa wasn’t the best show of the team’s ability. (Doesn’t that sound familiar.) The Hawkeyes were able to limit Ohio State to a season-low five three-pointers.

This matchup drew some additional attention with the two top scorers in the Big Ten conference, Kelsey Mitchell for Ohio State and Megan Gustafson for Iowa, going head-to-head. The Buckeyes were able to limit Gustafson to a season-low five rebounds, marking just the second time this season that she didn’t record a double-double. Gustafson did, however, score a game-high 29 points (on 11-of-14 from the foul line), while Mitchell put up 27 points on the day.

The Buckeyes were plagued with foul trouble and missed shots throughout the matchup. Stephanie Mavunga was in foul trouble most of the night, but earned her double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, before fouling out late in the game. Makayla Waterman also fouled out midway through the fourth, after putting up seven points and snagging six rebounds. Linnae Harper snagged double-double numbers with 17 points and 12 rebounds (along with four steals), and senior Asia Doss put up 14 point, in addition to three steals and two assists.

The Buckeyes will get back to Big Ten play on Saturday when they host Michigan State at noon at home -- the first of a three-game home stretch.

“In all, five Buckeyes were highlighted on Perfect Game’s Big Ten prospect list.”

-Ohio State Buckeyes

In addition to claiming five of the top 25 prospects in Perfect Game’s Big Ten College Baseball Preview, junior pitcher Ryan Feltner was listed as the top prospect in 2018 out of the Big Ten Conference and was named to their preseason All-Conference list. The 6’4, 195-pound right-hander has amassed 118 strikeouts in 131.1 innings pitched in two seasons with Ohio State, and was named 2017 Cape League Relief Pitcher of the Year and a CCBL All-Star. (Feltner was also named the top Big Ten prospect on D1Baseball’s Top 100 2018 prospect list earlier this month.)

In the news released by Ohio State in the link above, Perfect Game said of the 2018 Buckeyes, “With better health and injury luck in 2018, the Buckeyes are poised to potentially make a huge jump back into the conference’s elite, especially on the mound. It’s an extremely experienced pitching staff with a lot of seniors, and given health, could be one of the best staffs in the conference.”

The other four top Buckeye prospects span the next several draft cycles, with junior left-handed pitcher Connor Curlis (No. 21) rounding out the 2018 list, sophomore outfielder Dominic Canzone (No. 6) and sophomore third baseman Conner Pohl (No. 13) selected to the 2019 prospect list, and freshman catcher Dillon Dingler (No. 5) making the 2020 prospect list.

Congrats to @Cantguardmike, winner of the 2018 Best Hands competition! #ProBowlSkills pic.twitter.com/6YKnSx8G4G

— NFL (@NFL) January 26, 2018

The Buckeyes have four players (of six voted to the rosters) representing Ohio State in the 2018 Pro Bowl down in Orlando, and wide receiver Michael Thomas continues to prove why he’s breaking records and making Pro Bowls in just his second year in the league. During the Pro Bowl Skills Showdown — one of the many Pro Bowl Week events before the big game — Thomas helped keep the NFC in the contest, winning the Best Hands competition.

Ultimately, the AFC would win the overall showdown, but with a handful of teammates — including Buckeye rookie Marshon Lattimore — from the New Orleans Saints being voted into the All-Star game, the future for Thomas and the Saints looks very bright. The team fell just shy of making it to the NFC Championship, but will return almost all of their young playmakers, which should help them dominate in 2018.

Despite coming on after a slow start to the season, the Saints were poised for an extended playoff run — but, they didn’t end up making it as far as they had hoped thanks to the Minneapolis Miracle via Stefon Diggs. This was still the first year that Thomas has played in the postseason, where he claimed 15 receptions for 216 yards and two touchdowns.

Thomas’ two-year career has already broken records, and looks to continue to improve in the years to come. He’s coming off his second 1,000-plus season in a row, for a career total of 2,382 receiving yards during the regular season for 14 touchdowns.
