The Buckeyes undefeated run in Big Ten play came to an end against PSU.

It had to happen sometime. The Ohio State Buckeyes (18-5, 9-1) lost their first Big Ten game of the season, falling to the Penn State Nittany Lions (14-8, 4-5), 82-79, on Thursday night inside the Value City Arena.

After trailing by as many as 12 in the first half, the Buckeyes battled back—making it a one-point game at the halftime break. In the closing minutes of the game, the Scarlet and Gray were trailing by as many as nine. Once again overcoming the deficit, Keita Bates-Diop nailed a three-pointer with five seconds left to tie the game at 79-79.

However, Penn State’s Tony Carr banked in a three-point shot as time expired, ending the Buckeyes’ unbeaten conference run in the Chris Holtmann era.

Keita Bates-Diop, who was listed as questionable—due to illness—early on Thursday, ended up starting against the Nittany Lions. It took nearly eight minutes for the Buckeyes’ star player to make his first shot, but he played a critical role down the stretch in bringing the Scarlet and Gray back into the game. KBD ended the game with 25 points and 4 rebounds, with 12 of those points and three of those rebounds happening in the first half.

In addition to Bates-Diop, four other Buckeyes reached double figures. Jae’Sean tate had 17 points, C.J. Jackson had 12 points, Kaleb Wesson and Kam Williams both got 10.

Tate reached double-double status, grabbing 10 rebounds. For the night, he lead the Buckeyes’ rebounding efforts.

Carr, who hit the game-winner, led all players on the floor with 28 points. Lamar Stevens, who was PSU’s leading scorer in January with a 19.3 point per game average, scored 15 points against the Buckeyes.

All night long, Penn State found success from behind the arc. The Nittany Lions went 11-of-14 from downtown, including a 5-of-5 mark in the second half. Ohio State went 7-of-15 from three-point range, with six of those coming in the second half.

Here’s how this one went down.

Out of the gate, the Nittany Lions weren’t messing around; guard Shep Garner knocked down a three. On the Buckeyes’ first possession, Kam Williams got a jumper of his own to fall. However, Garner and Tony Carr put together three point makes before Kaleb Wesson connected on a layup. PSU’s barrage from downtown was a recurring theme throughout the game, and especially early, as forward Lamar Stevens rattled off another triple. The Nittany Lions sank their first five three-point shots and held a 16-6 lead with 15:46 left in the first half.

Coming out of the under-16 media timeout, the Bucks had to burn a timeout on the inbound as the Nittany Lions pressed everyone. Once the ball was inbounded after the timeout, the Buckeyes worked it inside to Wesson, however, a shot clock violation occurred—leading to the Buckeyes’ first turnover of the night.

Penn State’s hot hand from beyond the arc cooled off as Josh Reaves missed on his first shot from the land of three. While the crowd cheered after the PSU miss, the Buckeyes failed to make anything out of their next possession, as C.J. Jackson couldn’t connect on a three of his own.

Stevens, the Nittany Lions’ leading scorer, put together a couple free throw makes after getting fouled by Wesson. A little later, he knocked down a jumper. Penn State held a 20-10 lead with 13:48 left in the half, with Stevens leading all players on the floor with eight points.

After Garner sunk another three, the Nittany Lions pulled back up to a double-digit lead, 25-14, with a tad bit more than 10 minutes left in the first frame. Ohio State would make a push back into the game, as KBD rebounded the ball following a Micah Potter block, and took it home for a layup; a couple of minutes later, a missed Garner three was rebounded by Andrew Dakich, who then passed the ball to Bates-Diop—leading to a Tate layup.

Reaves took PSU’s next possession in for a layup of his own, as the Buckeyes’ made their rebuttal shot, a jumper, courtesy of Williams. Reaves took the ball on the next possession, but got it picked away by Tate. The turnover took the game into the under-8 minute media timeout with the Buckeyes trailing 27-20.

Ohio State would get even closer to ending Penn State’s lead after the timeout. Williams and Tate made shots—with Tate getting an and-1 after being fouled by Reeves. Stevens made a free throw for the visitors to push their lead back up to five, 30-25.

With the game within striking distance, it was time for the Buckeyes’ star to start making plays. Bates-Diop nailed a three-pointer, and then followed that up with a layup—which was made possible by a steal from Kam Williams. Ohio State tied the game at 30-30 with 4:40 left before halftime.

A timeout needed to be taken by PSU coach Patrick Chambers, as his team’s double-digit lead, which had gotten up to as many as 12, had evaporated within 10 minutes. The timeout worked, as Stevens connected on two free throws after getting fouled by Dakich. After a missed three by KBD, Watkins put in a layup after a missed shot from Stevens.

KBD wasn’t done, though, as he made three (!) free throws after being fouled by Stevens. Within one, 34-33, the Buckeyes couldn’t get their first taste of the lead. Carr made a jumper, and Watkins made one as well after Musa Jallow missed a field goal.

Watkins’ basket was the last one PSU would get in the half, but the Buckeyes couldn’t capture their first lead. Williams made a jumper with 1:55 left, and it would be 89 seconds until the next basket (a layup by Wesson) would fall. Ohio State went into the break down 38-37, but there was now a ballgame.

Penn State didn’t score in the final 2:27 and had three turnovers, but had the lead thanks to a 6-for-9 mark from beyond the arc. Ohio State made 52 percent of their first half shots, but only 1-of-6 from three point range.

The Nittany Lions lead was about to meet its end, as the Buckeyes came out of the second half looking to take over. Tate took the Scarlet and Gray’s first possession in for a layup, giving the home team the advantage, 39-38. Both teams traded blows—a variety of free throws answered by layups, and layups answered by three-pointers—before the Nittany Lions emerged with a 46-43 lead with just under 16 minutes left in regulation.

OSU’s offense began to buckle; three turnovers were committed within a 2:15 time span. On top of that, the Buckeyes went over 2:15 without scoring a point. Compound that with PSU going on an 8-0 run over 1:30, and you have a problem brewing in Columbus. The Nittany Lions held a 50-43 lead with 15 minutes left.

Even though the Bucks got free throws, they would go over four minutes without a made basket. Tate’s drive into the lane with 11:55 cut the deficit down to eight, 55-47. On their next possession, Dakich came down the floor and made a huge three to bring the Buckeyes within five.

That would be the closest the Buckeyes would get, as Penn State put together a string of made shots—two mid-range jumpers and two three-pointers—to pull away from the Scarlet and Gray. At the under-8 media break, OSU trailed by 13, 67-54. Even though the Bucks hit 50 percent of their shots at this point in the second half, the Nittany Lions were shooting 62.5 percent in the second half, with a 4-of-4 mark from downtown.

Ohio State battled back, getting within nine, 69-60, at the under-6 minute timeout. Off the media break, Wesson slammed home a dunk to bring the Buckeyes within seven—making the game interesting. A Carr jumper and a pair of KBD free throws made it a 71-64 game at the 4:14 point of the half.

As the Buckeyes were on the path to a comeback, Jackson was called for a foul on Carr. However, it appeared that Carr was off-balance and fell on his own accord. The fans booed, but the fact remained: Carr got two shots at the free throw line. He made both, pushing the Nittany Lions lead back to nine.

Tate made a jumper after fighting off contact, but Carr came back down and put a shot up from the right side of the lane—making it. On the ensuing OSU possession, Carr fouled Wesson after getting around a screen; the foul would take the game to the under-4 minute timeout with 3:12 left.

With the final media timeout out of the way, the game resumed with the Buckeyes down 75-66. In a frenzy, the home team put together big plays. Wesson made both his free throws after the foul prior to the media timeout. After Stevens’ layup, Bates-Diop uncorked a three-pointer that connected with the twine. Chambers called a timeout for PSU, as OSU closed within six points, 77-71, with 1:49 left in the game.

Bates-Diop got the Buckeyes within three after making another shot from downtown from the left of the key. As the fans roared within VCA, a miss by Stevens was recovered by Tate—leading to Holtmann burning a timeout.

Twenty-nine seconds remained, and the Buckeyes had possession. After the timeout, Tate drove in for a quick layup, making it a one-point game, 77-76. Jackson fouled Carr to force two free throws. Carr made both, leaving 15 seconds left—and the Buckeyes trailing by three. With four seconds left, KBD made another clutch play: a three pointer.

The game was tied with five seconds left. However, more drama was about to arrive. Carr buried (and banked in) a three as time expired, giving the Nittany Lions the walk-off win—and the Buckeyes’ first loss in conference play in the Holtmann era.

Ohio State Buckeyes is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 30 against the Indiana Hoosiers. That game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. ET tipoff, with ESPN2 broadcasting the game.

New head coach Chris Holtmann and his assistants didn’t waste time in developing a tight bond with the players.

“There’s a connection between this group and our coaching staff that’s happened a whole lot quicker than I’ve expected. A whole lot quicker. A lot of that speaks to their ability to be open to what we’re trying to do.”

Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann via Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

Everybody knew there was going to be a change in the culture of the Ohio State basketball program when Chris Holtmann accepted the job in June, but nobody expected it to take hold this quickly. Thad Matta was the winningest coach in Ohio State basketball history, but the last few years of Matta’s tenure were plagued by inconsistency and lack of passion from his teams.

What Holtmann has emphasized during his short time in Columbus has been the relationship between players and coaches. Not only did Holtmann buy a house close to campus to make it easier for his players to stop by when they wanted to, but he even went so far as to buy a PS4 and some games to take their mind off of school and basketball.

Despite only being together for a relatively short time, the relationship between players and the coaching staff has blossomed. Not only can the players see the coaches truly care about helping them improve, but the players are also trusting the coaches more. Jae’Sean Tate has had to change some of where he plays with the return of Keita Bates-Diop, but Tate has embraced the change and the team is flourishing. It would have been easy for Tate to be resistant to playing a different role, but he trusted what Holtmann asked him to do.

Ohio State has already defied the odds by starting Big Ten play 9-0. With how much the Buckeyes players and coaches have gone through together having been thrown together so quickly after Ohio State moved on from Matta, their experiences together, and how they’ve persevered, will only help them as they make their way toward the NCAA Tournament.

“Winning is really hard. It’s so hard. It’s hard in general (but) it’s really hard in league play when everybody is on even ground. Appreciating that and appreciating what goes into that is important. Yet at the same time we want to try as much as possible not to focus on the results.”

Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State looks to go 10-0 in Big Ten play tonight when they square off with Penn State, and while the pressure to keep winning is there, the Buckeyes are welcoming the challenge. The Buckeyes aren’t valuing one win as more important than another. A win is a win to Chris Holtmann and his Ohio State team, and they celebrate each one the the same way.

The difference between this year’s Ohio State team and Buckeye teams of the past few years, is that this year’s squad is welcoming adversity and actually responding positively to it. Monday night’s win over Nebraska was the closest for the Buckeyes in Big Ten play, and could help Ohio State down the stretch, since it tested the mental toughness of Holtmann’s team.

The difference between this year’s Ohio State team and other recent iterations has been night and day. Ohio State squads of the last two years probably would have found a way to lose a couple of games that they shouldn’t have during the recent stretch of four games in nine days. This year’s team just has a different toughness, and there for got through the week and a half undefeated. Maybe Dan Dakich wasn’t so crazy when he picked the Buckeyes to go to the Final Four.

The time of year has come when bracket projections from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi are released with more frequency. Today’s edition of Lunardi’s projections sees Ohio State as a two-seed paired up with Bucknell in the East region. If projections were to hold true, it would be a “Battle of the Bucks”, with the Buckeyes taking on the team that is currently the top squad in the Patriot League.

These projections will change plenty of times between now and Selection Sunday, but there are a couple of interesting things to note when it comes to Ohio State. While the seed might fluctuate, as long as Ohio State continues to play good basketball, they could be rewarded with first weekend games in Pittsburgh. No matter where Ohio State goes, they’ll have plenty of fan support, but even more of an advantage would be if they only had to travel a few hours east on I-70.

Three of the four losses Ohio State suffered earlier in the year have now come to teams that are seeded lower than the Buckeyes. North Carolina is currently slotted as a three-seed in the East region, which could see a rematch between the Buckeyes and Tar Heels. Clemson is a four-seed in the Midwest region, while Gonzaga is a six-seed in the West, and Butler a nine-seed in the South.

If Ohio State continues their winning ways, their matchup with Purdue in West Lafayette in a couple of weeks could be for a one-seed in Lunardi’s projections. The Boilermakers are currently the highest seeded Big Ten team, while the Buckeyes and Michigan State are next as two seeds. Michigan is the only other Big Ten squad included in Lunardi’s projections, and they are an eight-seed and would see themselves playing Butler in the first round.

Tate, Jackson and Wesson will have to step up if KBD can’t go.

As the Ohio State Buckeyes take to the hardwood tonight against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Value City Arena, it looks like there is a chance that they will be doing so without their best player. According to the Ohio State Athletic Department, junior Keita Bates-Diop is dealing with an illness, and is questionable for tonight’s game.

Junior Keita Bates-Diop is questionable (illness) for the @OhioStateHoops home game vs. Penn State tonight. His availability will be determined at game time (8 p.m./BTN)..

— Dan Wallenberg (@OSUADAthComm) January 25, 2018

Bates-Diop is the Big Ten’s leader in points per game with 19.7, and currently sits in third in terms of rebounding, with 8.8 boards per contest. After missing most of last season due to a stress fracture in his left leg, Bates-Diop has returned to the court to become the single biggest factor in the Buckeyes’ reemergence as a B1G power.

Throughout new head coach Chris Holtmann’s first season, KBD has been the most consistent player, often taking the team on his back when nothing else was working. If Bates-Diop does end up missing tonight’s game, the onus will fall on fellow veterans Jae’Sean Tate and C.J. Jackson, as well as freshman Kaleb Wesson, to pick up the slack in terms of scoring, rebounding, and leadership.

OSU (18-4, 9-0) is riding an eight-game winning streak, and is looking to move to 10-0 in Big Ten play, while Penn State has lost their last two games (to Northwestern and Minnesota respectively), and currently sits at 3-5 in conference and 13-8 overall.

The Buckeyes and the Nittany Lions will tip off tonight at 8 p.m. ET on the Big Ten Network.

Chris Olave will either commit to USC, UCLA, Utah or Ohio State.

It was a wild day for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Kerry Coombs, one of their best recruiters on staff, left his post as assistant defensive coordinator at OSU for a position on Mike Vrabel’s Tennessee Titans staff.

Coombs was one of the main recruiters for Ohio State in numerous places—ranging from Ohio, Texas, and Michigan. Currently, one of his main missions was the recruitment of three-star running back Maurice Washington. Now with Coombs moving on to the NFL, Urban Meyer and company will need to scramble and find a replacement to fill the void.

On the bright side, though, the Buckeyes have a stacked 2018 class, and the potential to make it even more stacked come Sunday.

The Final Four for a WR

Four-star wide receiver Chris Olave (San Marcos, CA / Mission Hills) announced his commitment date for Sunday, Jan. 29 on Twitter.

Sunday, January 28th. pic.twitter.com/pSgyzG0tvc

— Chris Olave (@chrisolave_) January 25, 2018

With him being a California kid, it isn’t a surprise that three Pac-12 schools made the cut for his final four. But, those schools may be on the outside looking in, as the 247sports crystal ball has 12 of the 18 total predictions in favor of Ohio State as the school Olave will select. UCLA has four predictions and are a distant second.

At 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, Olave has the potential to be a breakout star. He has speed off the line, and can blast past defenders. 247sports ranks him as the 54th best receiving prospect in the 2018 class and the 42nd best prospect in the state of California.

Here’s a highlight clip from Mission Hills star that was uploaded to Hudl.

According to Olave’s profile page on 247sports, the Buckeyes had a visit with the star receiver on Jan. 22; WRs coach Zach Smith and offensive coordinator Ryan Day were the ones to meet with him.

A side note, though: space is becoming a problem for Ohio State. Eight-five scholarships are allowed, and the Buckeyes are walking right on the line of having too many. If Olave—or anyone else—commits, room will have to be made. We’ll keep you posted on how all this will shake out.

A good take

Transitioning to the hardwood, the Buckeyes have been on fire in conference play. Already, Chris Holtmann has the Scarlet and Gray off to an unbeaten 9-0 start in the Big Ten, and 18-4 overall.

At the top of the conference standings (shared with Purdue) and in the hunt for relatively high seed in the NCAA Tournament, the question was asked on Twitter by ESPN recruiting analyst Paul Biancardi‏ on who the Coach of the Year should be. His poll included Villanova’s Jay Wright, Virginia’s Tony Bennett (not the singer), Duke’s Mike Mike Krzyzewski and Purdue’s Matt Painter.

There was no mention of Holtmann, but that didn’t stop a Buckeye signee from commenting. 2018 guard Duane Washington, who signed his letter of intent with OSU back on Nov. 8, made his choice clear: Holtmann is the coach of the year.

And it seemed that a decent amount of people agreed with that sentiment, too. Washington is a three-star prospect out of Chatsworth, Calif., and chose the Buckeyes over 29 other schools.

Sometimes, there are good takes on Twitter. This would be one of them.

After starting a four-game home stand on Monday with a win over Nebraska, Ohio State will host Penn State tonight at Value City Arena.

It wasn’t the prettiest win, but Ohio State was able to stay undefeated in Big Ten play on Monday night with a 64-59 win over Nebraska. In a game that was close throughout, Ohio State was able to withstand 34 points from James Palmer Jr., which was the most by an opposing player at Value City Arena. Now the Buckeyes will try and record their ninth win in a row tonight when they host Penn State.

Most of the contributions on Monday night for Ohio State came from the starters. Aside from Kam Williams, who failed to score a point, the other four starters for the Buckeyes all scored at least 12 points in the victory. Keita Bates-Diop led the way with 20 points, while Jae’Sean Tate added 17 points to pace Ohio State. The only scorer off the bench for the Buckeyes in the win over the Cornhuskers was Andre Wesson, who scored three points.

Ohio State has had plenty of success against Penn State over the years, posting a 34-14 all-time record against the Nittany Lions. In last season’s only meeting with Penn State, a late layup by Jae’Sean Tate was the difference in a 71-70 Ohio State win in State College. The Buckeyes are 17-4 against Penn State in Columbus, with the last win over the Nittany Lions at Value City Arena coming two years ago to the day, with Ohio State posting a 66-46 victory.

After Monday night’s close game against Nebraska, Ohio State figures to be in for another tight game against the Nittany Lions. Penn State has played eight conference games this season, with six of those eight being decided by single digits. The only games that were decided by double digits were a 78-63 Penn State win over Northwestern in early January, and a 95-84 loss in overtime to Minnesota last week.

The latest of Penn State’s tough losses came on Saturday to Northwestern at Allstate Arena. The Nittany Lions and Wildcats were tied at 59 with just over five minutes to go, but Northwestern outscored Penn State 11-2 down the stretch. Shep Garner led Penn State with 22 points in the loss, while Lamar Stevens was the only other Penn State player who scored in double figures, finishing the game with 13 points.

Coach Patrick Chambers is in his seventh season at Penn State, but is still looking to take his team to the next level. At 13-8 so far this year, Chambers has a good chance eclipsing the 18 wins he led the Nittany Lions to during the 2014-15 season. When Penn State beat Nebraska a couple weeks ago, it marked Chambers’ 100th win with the program. Chambers is still trying to secure his first NCAA Tournament bid with the school, and has only once taken Penn State to postseason play, when they reached the CBI Quarterfinal at the end of the 2013-14 season.

Numbers to know

18

C.J. Jackson has hit at least one three-pointer in 18 straight games. Ohio State didn’t have much success in Monday’s game from behind the arc, but Jackson’s three-pointer late in the first half was one of two three-pointers the Buckeyes hit in the game. The last time Jackson failed to hit a three-pointer in a game was back in the win over Northeastern in November.

6

Had it not been for Ohio State’s ball security, the Buckeyes might have been upset by Nebraska on Monday night. The Buckeyes tied a season-low with just six turnovers in the game, and Ohio State didn’t turn the basketball over at all in the second half. During their eight-game winning streak, Ohio State has committed less than 10 turnovers in five of those wins.

276

Ohio State will have to keep a close eye on Penn State’s Shep Garner behind the arc. The senior guard hit six three-pointers in the loss to Northwestern to raise his career total to 276 three-pointers, which is fourth all-time in Penn State history, and currently seventh among NCAA active players. Saturday’s performance marked the second time this season that Garner has hit six three-pointers in a game.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

The junior from Illinois scored 20 points in Monday night’s win over Nebraska, giving him eight games this year in which he has scored at least 20 points. The forward has reached double figures in scoring in all but one game this year, which was Ohio State’s first game of the PK80 Classic in Portland against Gonzaga. Bates-Diop now sits in 50th place all-time on Ohio State’s scoring list with 1,033 points.

Kaleb Wesson

Even though he was limited to just 13 minutes due to foul trouble in Monday night’s win, Wesson still scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds. The freshman did most of his damage at the foul line, tying a career-high with six made free throws. Wesson has now reached double figures in scoring in three of his last four games.

Penn State

Tony Carr

The sophomore guard is one of the Big Ten’s most improved players this year, increasing his scoring by 7.5 points per game. Carr sits just behind Keita Bates-Diop in the Big Ten in scoring this season, averaging 18.9 points per game. Carr has recorded at least 20 points in seven games this year, with his season-high of 33 points coming in the season-opening win over Campbell, and the overtime loss to Minnesota last week.

Lamar Stevens

January has been quite kind to Stevens, who is averaging 19.3 points per game so far this month. Stevens’ best performance of the year came in the 78-63 win over Northwestern, in which he scored 30 points. Stevens followed that up with 20 points in the loss to Indiana, and 26 points in the win over Nebraska. The sophomore forward is also averaging 6.5 rebounds per game this year, and has posted two double-doubles.
