And that prospect’s name? Tyler Friday

With the regular National Signing Day approaching, the Ohio State Buckeyes are still out on the recruiting trail in search of the next great star. So far, the 2018 recruiting class is stacked, and is already one of the top classes heading into NSD.

But, that class has the potential to be better.

Friday for Friday

The long awaited commitment date for four-star defensive tackle Tyler Friday (Ramsey, NJ / Don Bosco Prep) is upon us. Friday made the announcement on Twitter.

Commitment this Friday at Don Bosco Prep 2:00pm in the auditorium ‼️ Make sure you pull up #Decisions

— Big Smooth (@almighty_ty5) January 16, 2018

Coincidentally enough, he’ll make his announcement on Friday afternoon. The DT is considered the No. 2 prospect in the state of New Jersey and the No. 3 DT in the 2018 class, according to the 247sports composite.

The defensive tackle spot is a position the Buckeyes need to have filled, and the potential of having Friday in the fold will help add more depth on the line. How likely is it that the Garden State prospect will be packing his bags for Columbus? Judging by the 247sports Crystal Ball, things are looking really good for OSU.

In the past week, over a dozen predictions have been forecasted by recruiting analysts around the country on where they think Friday will land for college. All of those recent predictions point to one school in particular: The Ohio State University.

Back on Nov. 6, 2017, Friday tweeted out that his recruitment list was down to five schools: Michigan, UCLA, Miami (FL), Penn State and OSU. Over the course of the last month, however, the Alabama Crimson Tide jumped onto the radar as they had an official visit with Friday on Dec. 15. On top of that visit, ‘Bama defensive line coach Karl Dunbar visited with Friday on Jan. 12, according to 247sports.

Dunbar’s visited comes fresh off the Tide’s overtime victory against the Georgia Bulldogs in the National Championship Game, which is always a nice advantage to have when recruiting.

If you thought the Tide were going to swoop in at the last second for Friday without a fight, you’re sadly mistaken. OSU coach Larry Johnson met with the Don Bosco Prep standout on the same day as Dunbar.

It’ll be a big Friday for Friday. Will it also be a big Friday for Ohio State? If he does commit, we’ll have you covered.

A Columbus Offer for a Columbus Prospect

While Friday is getting ready to make his decision, an Ohio product got an offer from the Buckeyes.

Wide receiver Jerome Buckner II (Columbus, OH / Columbus Academy) picked up the Scarlet and Gray offer. On Tuesday afternoon, he made the announcement on Twitter.

Blessed with the opportunity and offer to stay home and play for The Ohio State University. pic.twitter.com/cdIEGomKL0

— Jerome Buckner II (@Jr_Buck) January 16, 2018

About an hour after he made the OSU offer known, Buckner made his commitment announcement. However, he didn’t commit to Ohio State; he ended up committing to the Ohio Bobcats.

100% Committed. Signed. Sealed. Delivered. pic.twitter.com/wHjltZf9Yp

— Jerome Buckner II (@Jr_Buck) January 16, 2018

Navy and Western Michigan are a couple other schools that have made offers to the Columbus native; in total, seven other schools have made their offers known for the WR.

But as things stand right now, it appears that Athens, Ohio will be the home for Buckner.

The Buckeyes have plenty of talent returning, despite some early departures to the NFL.

“[Winners] Ohio State: Any year where the Buckeyes’ number of draft departures is relatively small puts them in the “winner” category.”

- Adam Rittenberg, ESPN

Urban Meyer and Ohio State fans are no strangers to the Buckeyes losing large amounts of talent each season as players declare early for the NFL draft. But one of the great things about this program is the ability to reload with recruiting classes that are almost always at or near the top of the rankings. This year, however, it seems like the Buckeyes are in good position to not need as many new faces as normal. Ohio State is considered one of the “winners” after the deadline passed on Monday for players to declare for the NFL draft. And after the dust settled, the Buckeyes are primed with a lot of players returning.

The biggest wins were at the skill positions. Mike Weber at running back returns, while Parris Campbell, Johnnie Dixon, and Terry McLaurin made the decision to stay as well. Ohio State will also return defensive lineman Dre’mont Jones. The biggest losses for the Buckeyes to the draft were Denzel Ward and Sam Hubbard, but that’s pretty minimal for what usually happens after bowl games for Meyer’s squad. It looks like whomever wins the quarterback battle between Dwayne Haskins and Tate Martell (and potentially Joe Burrow) will have plenty of weapons to surround him.

“The work the Buckeyes have put in already, and the fact that the remaining schedule is not all that daunting has Ohio State in a good position. It’s basically at a place where if the Buckeyes win the games they’re supposed to win, they’re in.”

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

These are exciting times in Columbus. Ohio State basketball has reeled off five straight wins since their loss to a fifth-ranked North Carolina team. In those five wins, the Buckeyes managed to blow out the top-ranked team in the country - Michigan State - and improved to 6-0 in Big Ten play. Now sitting at 15-4 overall on the season, the Buckeyes have made the AP Top 25 for the first time in what feels like forever. And they’ve also given themselves a great shot at making the NCAA tournament in March.

Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology currently has Chris Holtmann’s team as a sixth-seed in the South region, where they are currently slated to play the 11th-seeded Boise State Broncos. Of course, there are still 12 games to be played, including big matchups against a third-ranked Purdue team and 23rd-ranked Michigan. The rest of the schedule is certainly in the Buckeyes’ favor, though, and if they’re able to sustain their success, it’s likely that Ohio State will be dancing in March.

“Just about anywhere else, there would be no question at all about getting [Demario] McCall a heavy workload. At Ohio State, the trick will be all about finding the right spots to unleash him.”

- Austin Ward, Land of 10

With all of the talent returning to Ohio State next season, players like Demario McCall might have a tricky time finding places to be productive or impactful. No one is questioning the ability that McCall has shown in his limited minutes, the athleticism he had before his medical redshirt this past season was obvious. Since Parris Campbell is the team’s H-back (and he looked good last season in that role), and J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber are still both on the team and will be expecting touches, it’s hard to see a place where McCall can truly be involved at a high level. There’s not enough touches to go around.

Of course, that’s the job of the coaching staff. To get the ball in the hands of their playmakers. The question will be can McCall be enough of a difference maker in practices leading up to the season to earn some of those touches? With Haskins, Martell, or Burrow leading the way, whomever is OSU’s QB this fall will need all the help that they can get as a first-time starter. It’s an interesting situation to keep an eye on as the offseason progresses.

That is one healthy spread for a team losing the best statistical QB in conference history.

With the 2017-2018 season now squarely in the rearview mirror, the sights of the college football world are now set on the fall. Coming off of a 12-2 record and a top-5 finish, the expectations are again going to be high for the Ohio State Buckeyes, despite the fact that they are saying goodbye to J.T. Barrett, the most decorated quarterback in Big Ten history.

However, Barrett’s absence under center doesn’t seem to have hampered the oddsmakers’ confidence in the Buckeyes. According to 247Sports, online sportsbook 5Dimes.eu has installed Ohio State as a 30.5-point favorite to beat the Oregon State Beavers in their season-opening matchup on Sept. 1, 2018.

Despite being a Power-5 team, the Beavers finished the 2017 season with an abysmal 1-11 record, going winless in the Pac-12, their only win coming against FCS’s Portland State, 35-32.

Oregon State did play a Big Ten team in 2017, as they hosted Minnesota in Corvallis, Ore. The Gophers beat the Beavers 48-14 in early September. The one common opponent between the two OSUs was the USC Trojans. Ohio State beat USC 24-7 in the Cotton Bowl, while the Men of Troy knocked off Oregon State 38-10 in October.

The Beavers will be looking to turn their fortunes around as they welcome in new head coach Jonathan Smith, who comes from one of the Pac-12’s best programs in recent years, the Washington Huskies. Smith has served as the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator since 2014.

The battle of OSUs will open the 2018 season for both schools. Kickoff time and TV broadcasting plans will be announced at a later date.

Elite defensive line prospect Tyler Friday has finished up his visits and will likely commit soon, and fellow New Jersey prospect Javonte Jean-Baptiste might not be far behind. Could the two commit together?

With Ohio State already having 22 future Buckeyes committed to the program following the early signing period, there is now little room to add to the Buckeyes’ impressive 2018 class. The Buckeyes will likely look to add at most three more recruits this year, and one of those could be happening in the coming days.

Elite defensive tackle prospect Tyler Friday (Ramsey, NJ / Don Bosco) has been seeing his name associated with the Ohio State program plenty in the last week. After being a Michigan lean for the majority of his recruiting process, Ohio State has now gained the momentum in his recruitment, with 91-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions now favoring the Buckeyes.

On top of this, Friday received an in-home visit from Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson this past weekend. Johnson has played a critical role in Ohio State’s ability to overtake Michigan as the favorite to land Friday, so one can assume the visit only helped Ohio State’s chances.

Late last week, Adam Friedman of Rivals.com reported that Friday was nearing a decision and that an announcement could’ve happened over the weekend. While the weekend came and went, Friday never announced a decision.

So what does this mean?

For one, it doesn’t mean Ohio State’s momentum is running dry and that they are losing ground in his commitment. If anything, it means that Friday is taking his time ensuring he makes the best decision for himself.

Expect Friday to still make a decision sooner rather than later. However, with National Signing Day being only a few weeks away, it is still possible that Friday waits until then to make an announcement.

Fellow New Jersey OLB set to visit Buckeyes this weekend

The aforementioned Friday isn’t the only New Jersey prospect Ohio State is targeting late in the recruiting process. Outside linebacker Javonte Jean-Baptiste (Oradell, NJ / Bergen Catholic) is also being courted by Ohio State and is slated to schedule the program this coming weekend.

While Friday was meeting with Ohio State last weekend, the four-star OLB visited Nebraska and seemed to like what he saw.

Wassup #GBR pic.twitter.com/2klSzCCTyg

— dontMessWithOcho (@Javontae_JB) January 14, 2018

While Nebraska certainly helped their chances in securing a commitment from Jean-Baptiste, Ohio State is still viewed as the clear favorite in his recruitment, holding 73-percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions.

As mentioned above, Jean-Baptiste is scheduled to visit Ohio State this weekend and if he enjoys his time in Columbus, the Buckeyes could all but secure a commitment from the elite OLB.

Package deal?

The most compelling news to come of the weekend happened after both of these New Jersey natives finished up talking to their respective schools.

Jean-Baptiste reached out to Friday late in the weekend and while all eyes were focused on their brief Twitter conversation, the two took it behind closed doors before anything of actual importance came to light.

Dm me

— dontMessWithOcho (@Javontae_JB) January 15, 2018

Does this mean the duo are a package deal?

Far from it. The two were more than likely discussing what they like about the schools since Friday was recruited by Nebraska as well. Until we hear otherwise, this can only be viewed as two friends talking to each other to help make sure both select the program best for them.

Expect more news to follow Jean-Baptiste’s visit to Ohio State this weekend and a commitment could happen before that for Friday.
