The Buckeyes have returned to form in Year 1 of the Chris Holtmann era.

Ohio State’s basketball team is good. Really, really good. Like, beating the No. 3 team in the country on their home floor with a last second shot after being down by 14 good. They also dumped the fifth ranked team back in January, if that’s more your style.

Seven (!!!) years ago, during the height of the Aaron Craft/Jared Sullinger/William Buford/Thad Matta era, Ohio State beating Purdue, Michigan State, and pretty much everyone else on their way to the top spot of the Big Ten would have been the expectation. Obviously, this team isn’t that team, or any of those teams that provided so many high points in the Thad Matta era. This team is better than that.

Let me clarify: no, this team is not more talented than most, if not all of the Matta teams, save for maybe the 2004-2005 and 2007-2008 teams (shout out to P.J. Hill), but that’s exactly what makes them different and ultimately better. The 2017-2018 Ohio State Buckeyes have absolutely no business being as good as they are. With only ten scholarship players, including former Michigan walk-on Andrew Dakich and three freshmen who see significant playing time (Kaleb Wesson, Kyle Young and Musa Jallow), no one expected anything from this team, and that is what sets them apart.

It’s impossible to talk about what helps makes this team so good without talking about the star player, and future NBA draft pick that should be named Big Ten Player of the Year at the end of the season: junior forward Keita Bates-Diop. After spending his freshman year as a role player (played about ten minutes a game), Keita started all 33 games as a sophomore, averaging 12 points and serving as Ohio State’s most consistent player. After an injury sidelined him for much of last season (the Buckeyes may have very well made the NIT last year had he been healthy), he’s been making up for lost time this season, leading the Buckeyes with 20 points and 9 rebounds a game. If you’re looking for a star on this team, look no further than KBD.

This isn’t an Evan Turner in 2010 situation, however. While KBD is the face of the team, and an extremely efficient scorer the offense can lean on, it’s the contributions of his fellow starters (C.J. Jackson, Kam Williams, Jae’Sean Tate and Kaleb Wesson), and the role players (Musa Jallow, Kyle Young, Andre Wesson, Micah Potter, and of course, Andrew Dakich) that turned Ohio State into the best team in the Big Ten just a season after going 17-15.

Every single one of those players plays a crucial role in each game Ohio State plays, and when they work together (as they do so well), they’re significantly better than the sum of their parts. The last time an Ohio State team could be described as “overachieving” was more than a decade ago, when Terence Dials, J.J. Sullinger, Je’Kel Foster, Ron Lewis and Jamal Butler led Ohio State to a two seed after winning just 20 games the year prior.

Ohio State doesn’t get to be the underdog very often, be it in football, basketball or anything else. That just comes with the territory of being one of the nation’s most profitable athletic departments. As rare as it may be, when Ohio State does get the chance to overachieve as an underdog, it often yields the most memorable moments, games, and seasons.

The three most enjoyable seasons of Buckeye football in recent memory came in overachieving years: 2002, 2012, and 2014. The same is true for the basketball team, and it’s that feeling of excitement that comes with a team playing above expectation that makes this team so much more enjoyable than almost every season in the past decade.

In just one season, Chris Holtmann (with some help from his players) has taken a soulless, sputtering Buckeye basketball team, and turned it into one of the nation’s best stories, while putting together one of the most exciting, shocking, jubilant seasons in Ohio State history. No matter what Evan Turner or anyone else says, Ohio State is the underdog this season, and we as fans should embrace that, because it won’t last forever. Just as they did under Matta, expectations will shift, and seasons like this one will become the expectation.

Before that happens, please take some time to watch, support, and love this team while we have them. I know I will.

Question regarding sales on BP

So I am doing a massive clean out of my IT inventory from side jobs and personal belongings from over the years and going to be selling everything online in the coming days. Everything from servers, workstations, hard drives, memory, processors, network equipment, monitors, video cards, etc...

Are there rules against someone posting this on here? My plan is to link a google doc containing everything for sale with an anonymous email to contact for interested parties. I will be posting it on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and perhaps a couple other spots. I'd like to sell most things locally but if I have to ship stuff I don't mind doing so to fellow Buckeyes.

I just wanted to ask before doing so...

Let me know,

Thanks!

edit: Perhaps we can create a marketplace forum, obviously with some rules in place, for people to sell all sorts of stuff.

Let’s recap the Buckeyes’ big day, shall we?

You know those days where everything goes your way? Like whatever you do, it’s going to turn out exceptional? That was how Wednesday went for Ohio State athletics.

Between signing one of the highest rated recruiting classes of all-time, Urban Meyer confirming that a contract extension is in the works, and the basketball team’s 64-63 road win over No. 3 Purdue—to give them first place in the Big Ten, no less— it was a banner day for the Buckeyes on all fronts.

Ohio State’s Wednesday, in GIF form

On this episode of the Hangout in the Holy Land, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn recap the Buckeyes’ eventful Wednesday, and give their thoughts on everything that went down, including:

  • Why signing 5-star OT Nicholas Petit-Frere was such a big deal, and reminiscent of how the Buckeyes stole Vonn Bell from the SEC in the 2013 class.
  • What 4-star OLB Javontae Jean-Baptiste brings to the program, how Meyer and co. were able to steal him from Nebraska, and why he might end up as a defensive end.
  • Meyer’s contract extension keeping him in Columbus for the long haul, and why Greg Schiano’s rumored pay raise is well-deserved.
  • Making fun of Michigan’s hilariously average class, and discussing why the Wolverines are in such a tough spot right now.
  • Recapping the basketball team’s win over Purdue, how the Buckeyes were able to win despite not playing their best, and generally waxing poetic about Chris Holtmann.

The class of 2019 is now the primary focus.

Wednesday was literally a day made for Ohio State fans. Not only did Urban Meyer and his staff land the nation’s second ranked class and the top overall class in the Big Ten, but the Buckeye hoopers knocked off the previously unbeaten in conference play Purdue Boilermakers on their home court. Not to mention, news of current Buckeye football Defensive Coordinator Greg Schiano staying with the Ohio State program pretty much capped off what was maybe the greatest signing day of the Meyer era.

In his presser alone, Meyer hinted to the fact that while this 2018 football recruiting class is incredible, the time for 2019 and beyond starts immediately as the 2018 class was cemented in ink. Many wonder why the Buckeyes continuously have the success they are having on the recruiting trail, but after hearing Urban say his staff will “toast and then it’s on to 2019” proves that the effort and attention to detail this coaching staff puts into their recruiting is truly at the top of the charts. Look for this next class to be much like every other Meyer Ohio State class: exceptional.

Sure, let’s try and “flip” this one too

There really isn’t too many times when Ohio State isn’t able to “hand select” the prospects they want in their recruiting classes. In fact, some fan bases like the one up North, complain about Meyer’s ability to swoop in and land a recruit that was thought to be solid to another respective school. However, who could ever blame the student-athlete for doing so? With the track record Ohio State has on and off the field with this coaching staff, top prospects all over the country are wanting to be a part of what is going on in Columbus. Maybe 2019 will be somewhat of the same storyline.

Yesterday, not even 24 hours after signing the nation’s second best class, Ohio State was at it again as they offered another prospect in the class of 2019. This time, Hakeem Beamon was the recipient when he announced via his Twitter account that the Buckeyes had come calling. The interesting aspect to the Virginia native is that he is currently committed already to North Carolina.

I’m BLESSED and HONORED to get an offer from The Ohio State University pic.twitter.com/ecaNXsZv1P

— Hakeem Beamon (@hakeem_beamon) February 8, 2018

Beamon is currently graded out as a four-star prospect by 247sports. More specifically, the 6-foot-3, 245-pound “ATH” ranks as the eighth best prospect in a very talented state of Virginia and the 32nd best athlete in the country. He committed to UNC back in June 2017, which may help to explain only having eight offers due to his loyalty. But in the last two weeks, schools such as Alabama, Penn State, Virginia, and now Ohio State have entered the race for Hakeem. Only time will tell if his early pledge to North Carolina is truly serious, and now with top programs from around the country coming his way, we may know sooner than later just how serious that verbal commitment really is.

What are they feeding these guys?

Normally, Ohio State isn’t one to really go after prospects more than a year or two out of reach. Reason being, Meyer and his staff feel that scholarships are not “pop-tarts” and don’t need to be handed out at an alarming rate. It’s rare for the Buckeyes to go after a prospect with only one year of prep film under his belt. However, when a prospect is “that” good, then go for it. Yesterday, Urban and his staff went for it as they sent out an ever so rare offer to a class of 2021 prospect in Julian Nixon.

Blessed to receive my 2nd offer from The Ohio State University pic.twitter.com/VNveaosKYo

— Julian Nixon (@JulianNixon11) February 8, 2018

A 6-foot-4, 205-pound receiver from Georgia, Nixon already has the body of a grown-man receiver prospect. With three years still to be played in his high school career though, the sky is apparently the limit for how much Nixon could still grow. While Julian is still to young to have a ranking on the 247sports site, it’s important to note that this will be a prospect that nearly every college program in the country will be after. With two offers already, and one being from the home-state Georgia Bulldogs, Ohio State being second to the party proves that they are not wasting any time with the opportunity to build a strong relationship with this stud receiver. With the success that Ohio State has had in Georgia too, certainly helps their case.

After coming into the season with low expectations, the Buckeyes are currently sitting on top of the Big Ten in Chris Holtmann’s first year.

“I had plenty of doubts. Maybe I need to start trusting him.”

Ohio State men’s basketball coach Chris Holtmann on Keita Bates-Diop during Ohio State’s last possession in the 64-63 win over Purdue via Dan Murphy, ESPN

Even though Keita Bates-Diop has had an outstanding season so far, it’s easy to understand why Chris Holtmann had his doubts heading into the Buckeyes’ final possession on Wednesday night. Not only was Ohio State down by a point, they were on the road in a hostile environment against the third-ranked team in the country, who was riding a 19-game home winning streak.

Wednesday night’s game was a game Ohio State had no business winning. The Buckeyes were without Kam Williams, who was suspended for the game, and Kaleb Wesson spent most of the game dealing with foul trouble. Isaac Haas and Carsen Edwards of Purdue were dominating the action, and the Buckeyes looked all but out of it when the Boilermakers went up 14 points in the second half.

This year’s Ohio State team has some fight in them that Buckeye teams of the past few years didn’t have at all. Despite being shorthanded, Ohio State battled back and found a way to take the Big Ten lead in a year where many had projected them to finish in the bottom of the Big Ten in Holtmann’s first year with the Buckeyes.

It’s not that Holtmann didn’t have trust in Bates-Diop and the rest of his teammates to win this game, but for the head coach and the rest of Buckeye nation it is just hard to believe how much this team has improved over the last year. Now Ohio State has wins over Michigan State and Purdue, and if people weren’t taking them seriously before last night, they certainly are now.

“I checked their scores all the time. I checked their statistics. I’ve been watching film on him. The minute we offered him the job, he had a handful of job offers right on top of it and obviously, he picked the right one.”

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer on new assistant Alex Grinch via Tim Bielik, Northeast Ohio Media Group

In this year’s college football coaching carousel, one of the best moves was Ohio State adding Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch to their staff. Originally Grinch was being brought in to be the 10th assistant on Ohio State’s staff, but the addition of Grinch is even more important now that cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs has joined Mike Vrabel’s coaching staff with the Tennessee Titans.

In just three years in Pullman, Wa., as Mike Leach’s defensive coordinator, Grinch transformed Washington State’s defense into one of the best in country. After the Cougars were ranked 84th in defense in 2015, Washington State moved up to 16th in the country this season under Grinch’s guidance.

With Grinch’s background, this move makes plenty of sense. Not only is Grinch a Grove City, Ohio native, but he also played college football at Mount Union. With the loss of Coombs to the NFL, Ohio State needed a high-energy guy on the defensive coaching staff, which is something Grinch will bring to the table.

Even though defensive coordinator Greg Schiano announced he was staying at Ohio State, despite rumors he was leaving to take the vacant defensive coordinator position with the New England Patriots, it seems like Schiano is either destined for a college football head coach job or a return to the NFL in the future. With the hiring of Grinch, Ohio State could have found their defensive coordinator of the future. Not only is Urban Meyer winning on the recruiting trail, but he is also winning when it comes to the coaching carousel.

“It’s tough to beat people. There’s a lot of great teams. It’s a great year for the Big Ten, and it’s just a tough conference to go through.”

Ohio State women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff via Andrew Erickson, The Columbus Dispatch

A tough task for Ohio State got a little tougher recently due to injury. On Saturday against Wisconsin, Makayla Waterman suffered a strained neck after a scary incident in the 68-55 win over the Badgers. Tonight the Buckeyes take on Rutgers, but it is unknown whether Waterman will be available against the Scarlet Knights. If Waterman isn’t able to play tonight against Rutgers, even more would be asked from Stephanie Mavunga and Alexa Hart, who would be the only two post players available for Ohio State.

Even with the injury concerns, Ohio State will have to be ready to take on a Rutgers squad who just beat Michigan on Sunday, which marked their first win over a ranked team this year. While Ohio State likes to run and is averaging over 80 points per game, Rutgers likes to slow the tempo down, and is allowing opponents just 57.1 points per game this season. With or without Waterman, the Buckeyes are going to face a tough test tonight.
