MotS&G Battleground: Scarlet VS. Gray Spring Game 2018

Battleground: Scarlet VS. Gray Spring Game 2018

Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

It is about that time again Buckeye Nation–it is time to see what the future has in store for us. The last year of the Barrett Era will usher in a new signal-caller to lead the team and boy, they are loaded at the position this year and the competition will be fierce.

In the new era, we will see what a trifecta of talented quarterbacks can do to help the team and more importantly, lead the offense during crucial moments this season. From there most of the Wide Receivers from last season have returned for depending on whichever quarterback wins the job, for a chance to thrive in what could be a more pass-heavy or balanced offensive attack–along with a new starter at Tight End. The O-Line retained all but two starters from last season, but the competition along the line has been another dominant storyline as well.

There are many directions that I can go, so let us get down to it.

Quarterback Proving Grounds:

The central focus and one of the most covered stories have been the pending decision for Coach Meyer when choosing J.T. Barrett’s heir. He has a cupboard full of talent and a difficult decision is on the horizon. Each player on the depth chart, minus incoming freshman Matthew Baldwin adds a different dimension to the offense, but they are all talented in their own way.

Dwayne Haskins is viewed by many as the obvious choice to lead the team this season after leading Ohio State to another victory against TTUN, and he did it after Barrett left the game with an injury–playing in front of a rowdy Ann Arbor crowd. He iced the game going 6-7 for 94 yards and three rushes for 24 yards, showing that he is ready if they need him and showing his talent to get a leg up on the competition at Quarterback.

Joe Burrow was the backup to Barrett, but an unfortunate injury to his hand gave Haskins the nod as the backup while he recovered. Burrow has been on the team a year longer than Haskins, but he is fighting to live out his childhood dream of being the starting Quarterback at Ohio State. While he doesn’t have the arm strength like Haskins does, he is as accurate with his passes. He isn’t as shifty as Martell, but he can move when he needs to do so.

Finally, Tate Martell is a bit of a dark horse in this competition because he possesses most of the traits of the previous two players, but he is definitely faster and more shifty runner that is similar to J.T. Barrett. He is also accurate and throws accurate passes downfield.

All in all, whoever wins helps the team the most. During the game, they will give the audience a show despite the potential for bad weather, but it will be fun. Either way Coach Meyer goes, the offense will become more balanced.

Trench Warfare:

Opposing defenses beware, the Buckeye Offensive Line is developing a mean streak that will serve up pancakes and extra-curricular activity if needed in between plays. The Buckeyes returned three starters from last season but lost two key players in Jamarco Jones and Billy Price.

These losses hurt, but the depth of talent at Ohio State’s disposal cannot be overlooked and the competition is making everyone better. Iron sharpens iron, and there are two starting spots available and 5 for the two-deep. Which two will separate themselves from the rest of the pack and which five will serve as game-ready backups on the depth chart this season? Even though it is just the Spring Game, it will be exciting to see these guys in action.

Defensive Turnover:

Defensive players, especially at Ohio State lie and wait for their chance to help the team and earn a starting role and this year is no different. This year the Buckeyes lost starters at every level. Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis, Jalyn Holmes, Tracy Sprinkle, Michael Hill, Jerome Baker, Chris Worley, Denzel Ward, Damon Webb and Erick Smith–also featuring a few former walk-on standouts.

That is a boatload of positions to replace, but they have the talent to go unscathed. DE’s Nick Bosa and Chase Young along with DT’s B.B. Landers and Dre’Mont Jones will give opposing lines fits. With a talented group of younger players coming in, you will see depth along the defensive line.

Linebacker has the most questions, especially after the injury to Tuf Borland. Upperclassmen and the younger players also will make things interesting this Spring and into the Fall. Everyone plays fast at this position, and it is only a matter of time until someone shines like Baker did.

Cornerback is pretty much set with Kendall Sheffield, Damon Arnette, and Jeffrey Okudah, but they are searching for a fourth this Spring. With Okudah out with an injury, Marcus Williamson has a chance to get more reps. Shaun Wade is now healthy, and he too will be in the conversation.

Safety returns Jordan Fuller but lost Damon Webb to graduation. Isaiah Pryor and Jahsen Wint will compete along with the other underclassmen, which like every position at Ohio State will be a dogfight, but necessary to push each other to get better.

For the time being, all we can do is predict until tomorrow morning, but until I see it for myself, it is difficult to get a good feel for what could and could not happen so I will wait until tomorrow to do so. For now, as a fan, I will enjoy it with the rest of you and give my projections based on what I have seen. Go Bucks!

Hopefully BOOOOMs will be coming early and often this weekend.

An already great recruiting week for the Ohio State Buckeyes just got even better. After the basketball program landed Alonzo Gaffney on Tuesday— their best commitment since D’Angelo Russell—, the football program has responded with a commitment of their own: New Jersey athlete Ronnie Hickman.

Hickman, ranked 124th nationally, is the second best played in New Jersey, and the 13th-ranked athlete. While no official position has been announced yet, obviously, I expect him to play receiver in Columbus, rather than defensive back, though he’s capable at either position.

Dreams really do come true! #GoBucks⭕pic.twitter.com/hZbUtBZifU

— Ronnie Hickman (@asvprocket_) April 14, 2018

This commitment comes just before Ohio State’s annual spring game, one of the largest recruiting weekends of the season. Hickman is one of many visitors for the festivities, and decided to kick off the fireworks a little early this season. He was one of a few recruits on commitment watch this weekend, along with Noah Potter, Harry Miller, and Garrett Wilson, all of whom are also on campus this weekend. It could be a huge couple of days for the Buckeyes.

In addition to Ohio State, Hickman held offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Florida State, and more than a dozen other major programs. Hickman had intended to be at the Opening camp this weekend in the Garden State, but instead decided to come to Columbus for the Buckeyes’ spring game.

Plus, Buckeye softball is headed to Northwestern and another big weekend for OSU tennis.

Ready for a weekend series in State College.#GoBucks pic.twitter.com/uY1SKXqYoM

— Ohio State Baseball (@OhioState_BASE) April 13, 2018

The Buckeye baseball team is looking to better their Big Ten record this weekend, with a three-game series, on the road against Penn State. The Ohio State softball team pulled off a 3-0 sweep over the Nittany Lions last weekend, and now it’ll be the baseball team’s turn to add some conference wins to their record.

A week after dropping a road series at Iowa, the Buckeyes stand at 21-10 on the season and 3-3 in Big Ten play. Going .500 in-conference isn’t great, but it’s definitely better than the eight games in a row that Penn State has lost leading up to this matchup. The Nittany Lions hold a 7-19 record on the season, 1-8 within the conference.

History is on Ohio State’s side in this series, with the Buckeyes leading the all-time series, 66-36, and having won the last 7-of-8 meetings between the teams. The Buckeyes didn’t pull off a 3-0 sweep during their 2017 matchup, but are looking to go undefeated this time around.

To follow along to the this weekend series:

“It’s a quick turnaround for No. 22 Ohio State as it prepares to head to Northwestern for a weekend series.”

-Ohio State Athletics

The Buckeye softball team only had one full day between their double-header against Penn State on Wednesday, and their first matchup of a three-game weekend series with Northwestern on Friday. That might not be a bad thing though, with Ohio State routing the Nittany Lions in both mid-week games, and hoping to carry that momentum with them as the get back on the road.

Northwestern is 23-13 overall so far this season, and is 6-5 in Big Ten play heading into the weekend meeting. The Wildcats were able to claim 1-of-3 games last weekend against Purdue, but are hoping to get back to the basics against the Buckeyes. These two teams have met 99 times, with Northwestern leading the all-time series, 35-61-3 -- this matchup marks the first time they’ll face each other in the regular season since 2015. The teams did meet in the postseason in 2016, with the Wildcats besting the Buckeyes 3-1 in the Big Ten Tournament that year.

To follow along with this Big Ten matchup:

The Buckeyes won’t get much of a break following the weekend series, with their next matchup on their home turf against Ohio University, Tuesday, Apr. 17 at 5 p.m. ET.

— Ohio State M Tennis (@OhioState_MTEN) April 12, 2018

The No. 3 Ohio State men’s tennis team will have their hands full this weekend, when they play host to the No. 6 Illinois Fighting Illini on Saturday and unranked Northwestern on Sunday.

The Buckeyes and Illini will battle it out, for the top spot in the Big Ten, with only one team remaining undefeated in the conference once the matchup is over. Ohio State is currently on a 10-game winning streak, with a 22-2 record for the season, and 7-0 record in the Big Ten — tied with Illinois for the top spot in the conference. During their 10-game run, the Buckeyes have outscored their opponents 51-11.

Illinois on the other hand is 16-5 on the season, with four of their five losses coming against top-10 programs (North Carolina, Wake Forest, UCLA, and Stanford). The Illini’s best win the season came against No. 11 ranked Michigan — who sits tied at No. 2 in the Big Ten with Minnesota at 5-2. They might not have the same type of momentum heading into this matchup as the Buckeyes, but Illinois does lead the all-time series between the two schools, 47-53-1.

Sunday’s opponent for the Buckeyes is the Northwestern Wildcats, who are 9-12 on the season, and 4-2 in Big Ten play. The Wildcats have only face four ranked teams so far this season, but haven’t managed to snag an upset win just yet. Ohio State leads this all-time series, with a 49-43 record over Northwestern.

Both matchups will begin at Noon ET on their respective days.

The weather could make things interesting on Saturday, but at least the Buckeyes didn’t have to cancel the game.

It might not count in the regular season standings, but there will be Ohio State football played on Saturday, even if it’s the annual spring game. The Scarlet and Gray squads will face off in what will be their final chances to make their way into the starting conversations before fall camp starts in earnest in a few months. A solid performance in the spring, is usually enough to garner the coaches’ attention heading into the season.

A bunch of schools have been forced to cancel their annual Spring Games due to expectedly bad weather, but instead of the Buckeyes packing it in, they decided to push kick-off up a bit to avoid any afternoon storms. If you’re going to the game, gates will now open at 10 a.m. ET and parking is free in the lots around the stadium and across campus.

Here’s everything you need to know about Saturday’s Ohio State scrimmage.

How to watch Ohio State’s Spring Game

  • Time: 11:45 a.m. ET** (NOTE: the game was moved up due to inclement weather)
  • Location: Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Oh.
  • TV: Big Ten Network
  • Online: BTN2Go
  • Radio: 97.1 The Fan
Who are the teams?

To be announced. The official Scarlet and Gray rosters have not yet been announced, but when they are, we will let you know.

Who are the Honorary Coaches?

This year’s duo of Honorary Coaches are a draw for fans themselves. Handling things for the Scarlet team is former linebacker OSU Ryan Shazier. The Buckeye legend was just reaching elite status in the NFL before a scary injury near the end of the 2017 season sent him to the hospital, eventually requiring spinal stabilization surgery. His injury was felt through the league and Buckeye Nation, and, with the most recent news that he has regained feeling in his legs and is able to begin walking rehab with support, his presence on the sideline will be extra special.

It isn’t a one-sided popularity contest, though. While it would be easy for Buckeye fans to support Shazier and Team Scarlet, the most recent Super Bowl-winning Ohio State alum is taking over for Team Gray. Philadelphia Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins will be working with the other group of Buckeyes heading into this scrimmage. Having just won his second Super Bowl ring, Jenkins has been a vocal leader for criminal justice reform, and goes above and beyond to be an asset both on and off the field.

Ohio State chose two excellent representatives to serve as the 2018 Honorary Coaches.

Is it played like a normal game?

Not really. The scrimmage is set up as four, 10-minute quarters, with the third and fourth quarters operating on a running clock. Urban Meyer has been known to make things interesting for his field goal kickers and punters, so how he handles that aspect will probably be decided off the cuff.

Similar to a regular game though, Ohio State fans know how to pack The ‘Shoe. Buckeye fans won’t be able to claim (yet, another) attendance record for their inter-squad scrimmage, due to construction limiting the number of seats, but the available 79,000 tickets sold out quickly. OSU is expecting to be at capacity for the event.

Any Ohio State alumni expected to attend?

There are going to be SO MANY BUCKEYE alumni at Saturday’s event. In addition to the Honorary Coaches, more than 25 other OSU football alums are expected to attend.

Just about everyone from last year’s Big Ten and Cotton Bowl championship team who either declared for the draft or ran out of eligibility, is expected to be in the stadium (about 19 former players). Not to mention the host of players from the 2016 and 2017 draft classes, like Joshua Perry and Michael Thomas, and Marshon Lattimore and Malik Hooker. The newly minted top-paid OG (offensive guard, not the other OG, but maybe that too) in the NFL, Andrew Norwell, is also expected to be in Columbus for the scrimmage.

What to pay attention to

Sure, all eyes will be on the quarterbacks, but that isn’t the only offensive position with some competition. Granted, trying to pinpoint the next starting tight end, isn’t quite as critical as naming a new starting QB.

There’s currently a three-way battle to take over for J.T. Barrett, between Dwayne Haskins (the guy who was Cardale Jones-esc in 2017), Joe Burrow (who was the No. 2 guy in 2016, but then got injured), and Tate Martell (a well-rounded talent who could see snaps at other positions).

Meyer has gone on record throughout spring practice to say that there hasn’t been a clear leader in the QB race as of yet. But, we all know that the coaches probably have at least some idea of whom they’re looking to lead the first-team heading into the season.
