Urban’s been saying that the defense was ahead all spring, but there were lots of weapons on display for the Buckeyes.

After a few days of speculation, not to mention a handful of other schools’ cancellations, the Ohio State football team held their annual, inter-squad scrimmage on Saturday.

As he often does, head coach Urban Meyer played fast and loose with the rules, rosters, and clock of the spring game. While many fans would have liked to have gotten some insight into the quarterback competition, Meyer seemed to flip back-and-forth between options early and often, even multiple times during drives.

That spring game mindset made it a little difficult to get a grip on where things stand. The other issues that got in the way of figuring out what the offenses had, was the fact that it was practically two-hand touch for all skill players, meaning that the top-line running backs of J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber were rarely used; although, when they were it was exciting.

Even though Meyer has said throughout the spring that the defense was ahead of the offense, the quarterbacks and skill positions for the offense were clearly the highlight of the game. Technically the Gray team won 37-14, but with skill position players swapping teams like Pokemon cards, that’s neither here nor there in terms of what’s important to take away from the game.

Tate Martell started the game for the Scarlet team going three-and-out. The teams seemed be trying to get as many plays in as possible before any weather got in the way. Joe Burrow and Dwayne Haskins were the quarterbacks for the Gray team, and after a timeout, Haskins led the offense with a pass to Parris Campbell. On the next play, Haskins spun out of trouble, but due to the QB no-contact rules, his run was quickly blown dead. However, given real game situations, he likely would have had a substantial pickup.

After Haskins again connected with Campbell, Burrow took over. His first pass was disrupted by a defender, and his second was a screen to the oft-forgotten Demario McCall. Burrow tried to connect deep with McCall, but it went incomplete, resulting in another punt.

Back behind center, Martell broke free from the pocket, despite the black jersey, and true freshman Master Teague had what could have been a big run blown dead due to contact at the line of scrimmage. While the Scarlet’s second team offense didn’t do much damage early on in terms of yardage, the explosiveness shown by some of their young talent was exciting.

Back on offense, the Gray’s Burrow found Campbell on a crossing-route that, given real circumstances, could have led to a touchdown. Burrow followed up with two more completions— including one to tight end Luke Fearrell— before Haskins took over again, and promptly found Campbell again.

Despite Meyer saying that Chase Young had a somewhat underwhelming spring, he got into the backfield touching Haskins down.

Later in the drive, Sean Nuernberger hit a field goal to get the Gray team on the board, and as is his wont, Meyer had the kicker attempt three more. Nuernberger made all four kicks, including the final one from approximately 52 yards.

After a facemask call, Martell rolled to his right and fired the ball to McCall for a strong completion. Then a scramble and a zone-read keeper, Martell went untouched and took the Scarlet inside the seven-yard line.

However, after a few passes failed to find the endzone, the ball was officially turned over for the start of the second quarter. That being said, Martell ran the ball six times in the first 10 minutes, and averaged 6.7 yards per carry. That total, while impressive, is even more so because of the black-shirt limitations.

One of the most inspiring and exciting aspects of Saturday’s game is that Ohio State legend Ryan Shazier served as an honorary coach. Though it was limited, the Pittsburgh Steeler linebacker was able to stand and walk a little bit, but spent most of the game in a golf cart; still a great sight for all Buckeye fans. Two-time Super Bowl champion Malcolm Jenkins served as the game’s other honorary coach.

After Haskins and the Gray team punted the ball away, Burrow took over the Scarlet’s second-team offense, and hooked up Ellijah Gardiner and McCall multiple times. McCall would be busy, especially in the first half, as he carried and caught the ball for both offenses.

He was clearly an offensive priority for the game, and might finally figure into the play-calling this fall.

He started a little sloppy with the Gray team, but as the first half progresses, his accuracy improved tremendously. In fact, his accuracy was so good, that he even completed a pass to himself, after it bounced off the helmet of a lineman.

— Ian Hartitz (@Ihartitz) April 14, 2018

The Scarlet team moved the ball down the field, and Teague had a nice spin move that— even though the two-hand touch rules stopped two runs that would probably have been touchdowns, Teague had a number of nice runs and eventually got into the endzone, capping off an impressive drive for Burrow. After the TD, the QB was 9-for-12 for 104 yards, and Team Scarlet was now up, 7-3.

This isn’t the first time that Burrow has looked good in a spring game. In 2017, despite J.T. Barrett being the obvious starter, Burrow looked very impressive in the Scarlet and Gray game, and had he not gotten injured at the tail-end of fall camp, he likely would have been the backup last season.

In his first actual carry, Weber went 63 yards before being touched down. The running back made an impressive cut at the line of scrimmage and then raced away from the defense for what would have been a touchdown given regular season rules. However, Martell, now running the Gray offense, scampered to paydirt on the next play. Gray was back on top 10-7.

On the Scarlet squad’s next possession, the carousel of quarterbacks continued, as Haskins took over the offense, and for the first time on the day, we started seeing actual tackling. Teague and McCall got the first few touches and moved the ball across midfield.

Haskins matched Burrow with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Harris to put the Scarlet up 14-10. While he didn’t have the accuracy that Burrow had on the afternoon, Haskins’ pass to Harris was as impressive as any throw from any quarterback on the game.

Back with the first-team offense, Martell showed some fancy footwork, but was replaced by Burrow on 4th and 2. The new QB kept it on the option and picked the first down, and going with a little tempo, found Binjimen Victor for a 25-yard pickup with under two minutes remaining in the first half.

After a pass-interference in the endzone, Antonio Williams got the carry and fought hard to get down to the three-yard line. A few plays later, Williams again got nasty and crossed the goal line, putting the Gray up 17-14 with just 16 seconds remaining in the half.

The next Scarlet series was supposed to end the first half, but with rain still on its way, they skipped the intermission, and just continued into what would eventually become the third quarter— now with a running clock.

On the drive, Martell replaced Haskins, and had two rushes that otherwise would have been big gains. After a timeout, Haskins returned, and found Victor on a nice over-the-shoulder catch for a 40-yard completion inside the redzone. Then, a few plays later, Victor held onto a contested back-shoulder throw to put the Gray up 24-14.

Haskins wrapped up his second spring game in Columbus going 9-19 for 120 yards, but that doesn’t tell the story of how impressive his arm was on Saturday. While his accuracy could certainly be improved, he routinely made throws that very few QBs can.

Haskins, back in control of the Scarlet offense, gave the ball to Teague on an inside counter, and he picked up 17 yards and a first down. On the next snap, Teague picked up another first down, and while he likely won’t be able to overtake Dobbins, Weber, and Williams in the backfield, he certainly made a good impression in the spring game, which should bode well for his future in the program.

The true-freshman finished his first Buckeye action with 73 yards on 14 carries and a TD.

With the running clock in full-effect, Burrow completed a 53-yard bullet to McCall who continued to rack up stats from the H-back position. With the Gray now up 31-14, McCall had eight receptions and 121 yards through the air.

Martell took back over for the Scarlet team, and while his arm and accuracy were nowhere near the league of Haskins and Burrow, he showed a tremendous amount of explosion and creativity on Saturday. Given all of the opportunities he got in the spring game— and praise Meyer’s given him— it seems likely that he will have a package or two designed for him this fall.

However, Martell did have the first turnover of the game, when Shaun Wade made a diving interception with 4:19 remaining. The redshirt-freshman finished going 5-16 passing for 28 yards, but accounted for 69 nice yards on 11 carries.

On a final, untimed, play, Burrow found McCall for 42 yards and another touchdown to give the Gray the 37-14 victory.

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) April 14, 2018

There is no doubt that both quarterbacks looked good on Saturday, but in terms of the full package, Haskins seemed to take the day. Burrow’s last-second TD bomb aside, Haskins made some incredibly impressive throws throughout the game, and his accuracy picked up as the afternoon went on.

Burrow finished the game 15-22 for 238 yards, and in any other year, I think would have stolen the show. However, coming out of the game, I— for one— think that Meyer has no choice but to have Haskins as the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes this fall.

While Meyer would certainly prefer for Burrow to remain a Buckeye, one has to begin to consider if the writing is on the wall, and whether or not the quarterback— who graduates next month— decides to use his graduate-transfer option and find a place where he can be the starter for the next two seasons.

The Buckeyes never trailed against TTUN in The Shoe Friday.

The Ohio State Buckeyes lacrosse team snapped a five-game losing streak Friday, defeating No. 17 Michigan, 8-5 in Columbus. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 7-6 on the season, including 1-2 in the Big Ten. Ohio State also improved its perfect record against rival, to 7-0 all-time.

The game was rescheduled due to inclement weather Saturday, which also moved the Spring Game to an earlier time slot.

Even with the new schedule, Ohio State wasted no time as it began its beatdown. After falling behind early in several instances during their losing streak, the Buckeyes found an early, 3-0 lead in the first quarter versus the Wolverines. Junior attackman Jack Jasinski led things off for Ohio State, scoring unassisted in transition. Sophomore midfielder Tre Leclaire followed up Jasinski’s effort, finding the back of the net from long range. Freshman attackman Colby Smith got in on the action as he scored on a man-up opportunity, assisted by fellow freshman Jackson Reid.

However, the tide began to turn against the Buckeyes at the end of the first, as the Wolverines scored three unanswered goals to tie things up. Michigan’s Brent Noseworthy capitalized on a man-up opportunity late in the quarter to cut Ohio State’s lead to two. Two more unassisted goals in the second from Decker Curran and Alex Buckanavage tied things at three-all heading into the break.

After halftime, Ohio State took control in earnest (perhaps because of this halftime performance from the TBDBITL), gaining a lead that they did not relinquish for the remainder of the game. Sophomore attackman Lukas Buckley led off for the Buckeyes, coming from behind the net to score unassisted. The defense held off the Wolverine attack on a two-man-down opportunity following penalties on Leclaire and junior attackman Gale Thorpe, and Leclaire redeemed himself with his second score of the game, assisted by Reid. Thorpe himself followed up with a transition goal during a man-up opportunity, assisted by Smith. Leclaire then completed his hat trick on behind-the-net feed from Jasinski, putting the Buckeyes up four. A Michigan score from Rocco Sutherland with three seconds left in the third brought the score to 7-4 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.

The Buckeyes maintained possession for much of the fourth quarter as they nursed their lead. Reid connected for his sole goal of the day early on in the quarter. A final Wolverine score midway through the fourth was not enough to mount a comeback as sophomore goalie Josh Kirson and the defense remained stout through several offensive onslaughts, sealing the win for Ohio State.

Leclaire’s three goals led the Buckeyes, with six players scoring in all. Ohio State went 10-for-17 on faceoffs on the evening, led by freshman midfielder Justin Inacio. The Buckeyes also won the ground ball competition, collecting 23 to Michigan’s 17. In such a tight game, Michigan turned the ball over 13 times, while the Buckeyes coughed it up just eight. Kirson had seven saves on the day on a dozen shots. Tommy Heidt, in goal for Michigan, saved 15 shots on 23 attempts.

Next up, the Buckeyes are scheduled to face No. 2 Maryland in College Park Sunday.

usa_today_10013550.0.jpg

The QB graduates next month and has two years of eligibility remaining.

Now, first and foremost, let me say that I have no idea who is going to start at quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes when they kick off the 2018 season against the Oregon State Beavers on Sept. 1. In fact, I’m not sure that anyone does.

OSU head coach Urban Meyer has said repeatedly throughout the spring that none of the three quarterbacks competing has distanced himself from the other two— at least that’s what he’s saying publicly. This is clearly a fantastic problem for any college football team to have, and many teams across the country would love to have just one of OSU’s QB options... and maybe one might get its wish.

Certainly, Meyer would like to keep all three of his potential signal-callers in the fold, because as the last few seasons have shown, having a backup QB who can competently take over should injuries arise is vital in the search for Big Ten and National championships.

So, that brings us to the curious case of Joe Burrow. Following last spring’s Scarlet and Gray scrimmage, it seemed pretty clear that the Athens, Ohio native was firmly entrenched as the backup behind J.T. Barrett. However, with just a week to go before the Buckeyes opened their season against Indiana, Burrow was forced to undergo surgery on his hand after breaking a bone during practice.

Fellow reserve Dwayne Haskins made the most of his opportunity, and took hold of the QB2 job, even performing admirably when Barrett was injured against Michigan. You might recall that there were more than a few in Buckeye Nation calling for Haskins to replace Barrett full-time.

With the most decorated quarterback in OSU and Big Ten history now gone, the program— and Burrow specifically— has come to a critical decision. This fall, Burrow will be a redshirt-junior, while Haskins, a redshirt-sophomore; meaning that they have two and three years of eligibility remaining, respectively.

So, the decision that Meyer and his offensive staff makes heading into the fall will not only impact the program for the next few years, but will impact the career trajectories (and ultimately, lives) of both young men competing to be the starter.

So Burrow has a decision of his own to make.

Joe Burrow has not ruled out transferring. He says he wants to play, and if he does not see that happening here, then there are conversations he will need to have with his family, friends, and coaches.

— 105.7 The Zone (@1057TheZone) April 14, 2018

Burrow will receive his business degree from Ohio State next month, meaning that he would have the ability to transfer without impunity, play in 2018, and have two years of eligibility remaining.

Now, I think that Haskins has shown more than enough talent and poise to earn that spot (some of the throws he made on Saturday were unreal), but, the spring game stats certainly didn’t do enough to close the book on the competition either way.

Throwing the ball, Haskins finished 9-of-19 for 120 yards, while Burrow was 15-of-22 for 238 yards. Statistically, Burrow had the better day, but anyone who watched Saturday’s game knows that stats, rules, and rosters were a little bit nebulous for the scrimmage.

So, even if you take the stats on face value, and they gave Burrow a slight advantage in the competition, the question is, does that do enough to encourage him to spend another year of eligibility in a quarterback competition with a younger, more highly-recruited teammate? Or, does he assess his options, and determine that taking his talents elsewhere are the better decision for his collegiate— and perhaps eventually, professional— playing career?

To be a quarterback at a place like Ohio State, you have to be supremely talented, and just as supremely confident. So it’s likely that Burrow’s natural instincts are to trust that his abilities and work ethic are enough to put him on top when the official depth chart is released. However, that might not be the most prudent path to travel.

Now, I’m obviously not kicking Burrow out the door. I would love it if he and Haskins remained on the roster, giving Meyer, Kevin Wilson, and Ryan Day two talented options to do with what they see fit. (Keep in mind that Meyer didn’t exactly handle his last quarterback competition in the best way possible.)

However, I couldn’t blame Burrow if he decided to take the surer route and transfer to a program where he is more likely to start for the next two seasons, giving him the best opportunity to continue this playing career at the next level.

Either way, the months leading up to fall camp will be as interesting and impactful for the Buckeyes as they have been in recent memory, as Meyer tries to find the best way to set up his program post-Barrett.

Nothing like having a reminder of your game-winning TD against your bitter rival.

Most Ohio State football players proudly flaunt their wins over rival Michigan with their iconic gold pants around their necks. However, former Buckeye H-back Curtis Samuel took things one step further, and added a diamond-encrusted pendant to his jewelry collection. But, this is not just any diamond-encrusted pendant, it is in the shape of his heroic, game-winning pose that officially sealed the 2016 edition of The Game.

CURTIS SAMUEL HAS A DIAMOND CHAIN OF HIMSELF SCORING THE WINNING TD IN THE 2016 MICHIGAN GAME pic.twitter.com/3VcL43PJZE

— The Hangout in the Holy Land (@HolyLandPod) April 14, 2018

During Samuel’s time at Ohio State, he beat the Wolverines three times, and earned quite a bit of bragging rights, but his performance in the 2016 matchup is what makes his chain choice so great.

He only finished with seven carries for 54 yards (with 32 receiving yards), but his run into the endzone— following the legendarily good spot— ended the second overtime, and immediately became one of the most memorable moments from the rivalry in recent memory.

Just because Samuel is now playing in the NFL for the Carolina Panthers doesn’t mean his Ohio State allegiance lessens in anyway, and he now has another constant reminder of his repeated victories over That Team Up North.

And, in case you were wondering:

On a final, untimed, play, Burrow found McCall for 45 yards and another touchdown to give the Gray the 37-14 victory.

While Meyer would certainly prefer for Burrow to remain a Buckeye, one has to begin to consider if the writing is on the wall, and whether or not the quarterback— who graduates next month— decides to use his graduate-transfer option and find a place where he can be the starter for the next two seasons.

Who had any idea the record-setting place kicker still had eligibility left?

With roster turnover a yearly event for Ohio State football, it seems like we’ve been hearing Sean Nuernberger‘s name for much longer than four years. But, as we were reminded during the spring game, he’s back again in 2018 for his fifth— and final— season with the Buckeyes.

After coming to Columbus in January 2014, the Buckeye kicker played his entire true-freshman season, going 100% on his 89 point-after attempts that year, but falling short in field goals, only making 13-of-20. He may not have been consistent for three-points, but his extra-point effort set 10 records (7 school, 3 Big Ten) as a true-freshman place kicker.

As with every position under Urban Meyer, nobody’s job is safe, and Nuernberger found himself competing for the kicking position with transfer Jack Willoughby ahead of the 2015 season. Nuernberger was out-kicked, and didn’t regain point-after kicking duties until the 10th game of the season. To finish the year, the Buckeye hit 3-of-4 field goal attempts, and extended his consecutive extra point streak to 106 -- breaking Drew Basil’s record (102) from 2012-13.

Things didn’t exactly get better for the Ohio State kicker following the 2015 season, with Nuernberger taking a red-shirt for his junior season in 2016. Finally back in the lineup in 2017, the Buckeye continued his streak, adding another 71 consecutive extra points to his resume.

Just to make this abundantly clear: Sean Nuernberger has never missed a point-after attempt in his entire collegiate career.

He finished his 2017 campaign with his best fieldgoal-made percentage yet (81.0%), missing on only four of 21 on the season. Nuernberger still has a year of eligibility left, and will try once again to extend his perfect record of point-afters in his last season with the Buckeyes.

All, hail the Buckeyes’ Big Bob!

Now I understand that all Ohio State football fans are anxiously awaiting an announcement as to whom will be the starting quarterback when the Buckeyes kick it off against Oregon State on Sept. 1. And then, we are also deeply invested in seeing how the running back rotation will work itself out.

However, I am here to tell you that there is no OSU football player that you should care about more than Robert Landers.

Did Robert Landers (@roblanders96) enter Ohio Stadium with a golden football filled with gushers to give out? Of course he did. pic.twitter.com/atxd4sgAir

Not only did the somewhat “vertical challenged” rising-junior defensive lineman roll into The Horseshoe for today’s spring game with what appears to be a football of gold, but apparently, it has a secret compartment for him to stash some snacks, just in case he needs a “burst” of energy.

His snack of choice? Gushers. However, being the kind and fun-loving soul that he is, Big Bob passed out some of his favorite fruit snacks to children lined up at the stadium’s entrance.

The 6’1, 283-pounder ends the spring as one of the DTs fighting for a starting spot. He’s only had a total of 26 tackles in his two years at Ohio State, but 12.5 of those were for a loss. And, who can forget what might have been against Indiana last fall?

So, Big Bob Landers, we salute you, and look forward to what shenanigans you’ve got planned for the fall!
