The big right-hander is the first Buckeye off the board in 2018.

Ohio State baseball has its first draftee of 2018. Junior starting pitcher Ryan Feltner was selected in the fourth round by the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday. The 126th pick overall in the draft, Feltner is looking at a slot value of $434,700.

Considered one of the top prospects in the Big Ten entering this season, the Hudson, Ohio native battled early inconsistency to finish the year strong. Overall, Feltner posted a 5-5 record with a 4.52 earned run average. In a team-high 91.2 innings, he struck out 86, walked 44, and surrendered a .276 batting average against.

When the Buckeyes needed Feltner the most, though, he performed, putting up two quality performances in the postseason. In an elimination game during the Big Ten tournament in Omaha, he blanked Iowa for six innings, and in the NCAA tournament tossed six innings of two-run ball against UNC Wilmington.

Feltner was previously drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 25th round of the 2015 MLB draft after having been named the Ohio Gatorade State Player of the Year. He opted to postpone pro ball, though, and through his first two seasons in Columbus had made 37 appearances, including 18 starts. Mixed results stemmed from command issues, as he learned to harness the fire in his arm.

The big right-hander began to do just that last summer in the Cape Cod League, the most prestigious college summer league in the country. Serving as the closer for the Bourne Braves, Feltner tallied a league-high eight saves while not allowing an earned run in 15.1 innings of work.

Feltner’s season in the Cape helped to raise his draft stock, though evaluators think his stuff will play better out of the bullpen as a pro. MLB Pipeline writes:

While Feltner generates premium starter velocity without much effort, hitters see the ball well against him and don’t miss his fastball as much as would be expected. His control and command lack consistency, which also makes him vulnerable. The consensus is that he’s best suited for a relief role as a pro, and he could have a plus-plus heater in shorter stints.

Time will tell what the Rockies intend for the Walsh Jesuit High School product’s development, and whether his future resides in the bullpen or not. For now, though, we here at Land-Grant Holy Land wish Feltner the best as he moves on to the next level, and hope to see him in The Show someday.

Ohio State is set to host 2020 4-star offensive tackle commit Jake Wray today as well as his teammate 2020 4-star quaterback Harrison Bailey.

As summer quickly approaches, the Ohio State football team is hard at work at team practices preparing for the upcoming college football season. However, this time of year Ohio State’s coaching staff is also hard at work on the recruiting grind.

With high school students being out of school for the summer, they will now have more time to visit colleges they are interested in. And because Urban Meyer has been able to make Ohio State one of the most dominant forces in college football since his time of being head coach of the program, the University hosts some of the best prospects year in and year out.

Following with this, Ohio State is set to host multiple blue-chip prospects on campus today, including 2020 four-star offensive tackle commit Jake Wray (Marietta, OH / Marietta.)

Wray committed to the Buckeyes in April of this year and today’s visit will mark his first time on campus since the commitment. While there is no talk of Wray wavering on his pledge to the University, the big story for those who follow Ohio State recruiting will be who will accompany him during the visit.

Four-star quaterback and current teammate of Wray, Harrison Bailey will be making the short trip to Columbus along with Wray. The news was reported by 247Sports own Bill Kurelic and was then seemingly confirmed via Twitter by Wray himself.

Go bucks ⭕https://t.co/H64MR8zRbb

— Jake Wray (@jakewray77) June 4, 2018

Bailey has yet to receive a 247Sports Composite Ranking, as have many 2020 prospects, but he has shown enough to where he will likely be one of the most sought after prospects in his class. 247Sports has him ranked as their No. 2 pro-style QB and the No. 69 overall prospect despite position.

On top of that, Bailey has also received a reported 20 scholarships already from some of the best college football programs in the country including, Michigan, Michigan State, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Texas A&M, Florida State, UNC, etc.

While Michigan is viewed as the favorite to land Bailey, Tuesday’s visit could put Ohio State right up their with them, if not put them ahead. Quaterbacks have strong relationships with their offensive linemen and knowing that Wray will be playing in Columbus could make Ohio State one of the main contenders in the race for his commitment.

Make sure to stick with Land-Grant Holy Land as we will have updates on the above visits and more to come.

3-star TE visits Ohio State

While today will likely be a busy day for the Buckeyes as they host some elite talents, don’t think for a second that the Ohio State football program took Monday off from recruiting.

While not holding the accolades that many Ohio State prospects do, 2019 three-star tight end Brenton Strange (Parkersburg, WV / Parkersburg) took to Twitter Monday to express his thoughts on his visit to Columbus.

Had a great time at the Ohio State University today ! pic.twitter.com/p3wQhskkYf

— Brenton Strange (@BrentonStrange) June 4, 2018

Ohio State has made it clear that they want to pick up a commitment from a TE this year and while they have offered and are pursuing multiple, there isn’t one that stands out from the group in terms of fit.

Because of this, Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff are looking deeper into the position group to find their guy, and they might have done just that Monday.

Strange has yet to receive an offer from Ohio State and appears to have left without one, however, if the Buckeyes decide to continuing pursuing him, an offer from them would almost certainly be the top of his list. Currently, he holds offers from Akron, Albany, Marshall, Purdue and Rutgers and Louisville and West Virginia have expressed interest.

Michigan’s coach may be a little sensitive on the subject.

“It’s been emphasized.”

-Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, via Nick Baumgardner, Detroit Free Press

The Michigan football program has taken a lot of heat this offseason in regards to its treatment of its annual rivalry matchup with Ohio State. Last month, former Wolverine standout Charles Woodson, after speaking at Michigan’s commencement in April, lamented the fact that Michigan players don’t seem to “emphasize” their rivalry with Ohio State, much to the chagrin of head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Most recently, Urban Meyer savagely trolled Harbaugh while attending a recruiting camp in Michigan Sunday. In particular, Meyer spoke to the group gathered at Grand Valley State’s “Best of the Midwest” camp about the importance of being successful in rivalry matchups--all while Harbaugh, who had been touted as the keynote speaker of the event and who had brought his entire coaching staff to attend, looked on just a few feet away. “I want to see it in your rivalry game,” Meyer said. “I want to see it on fourth down, when the team needs you. Not when you’re running around in shorts and T-shirts doing vertical jumps.”

Meyer’s choice of words was probably uncomfortable for Harbaugh, who had looked on as J.T. Barrett and the Ohio State offense converted on fourth down in overtime in 2016 to set up an Ohio State win. Meyer also said all of this while wearing a 2014 National Championship jacket, and adding points about the success of Ohio State players in the NFL.

Harbaugh remains winless against his rival, while Meyer boasts a sterling, 6-0 record versus Michigan. When asked later in the day about Woodson’s comments, Harbaugh responded that the rivalry has been emphasized “coming from someone who has been there every single day.”

Meyer and Harbaugh did not interact during the camp’s speaking portion, which also featured the head coaches of Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan.

Waking up on Monday morning after qualifying for a World Team always start with some smiles.

— Ohio State Wrestling (@wrestlingbucks) June 4, 2018

The 2018 Ohio State wrestling season was an outstanding team effort. While Kyle Snyder, perhaps the most decorated wrestler of his generation, made headlines when he earned his third NCAA title this year, the Buckeyes collectively put together a dominant performance on their way to a national runner-up finish in March.

However, wrestling never stops, as a number of standouts from Ohio State are competing in major, world tournaments in the offseason from college wrestling. In April, a group of three current Buckeyes and alums competed for Team USA in the World Cup, bringing home the gold. In May, rising senior Joey McKenna, a two-time All-American, was named a representative of Team USA for the 2018 World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary in October.

Now, two current Ohio State wrestlers have earned spots on the U23 World Team for Team USA. Senior Myles Martin and redshirt junior Kollin Moore both competed in the U23 World Team Trials over the weekend in Akron. With their respective wins, the pair is set to compete in Bucharest, Romania in the U23 World Wrestling Championships in November. Even more impressive, the roster has just 10 spots. Ohio State and NC State were the only two programs to earn more than one roster spot.

Martin, competing at 86-kilograms, defeated Chandler Rogers of Oklahoma State, taking the first two matches to seal the win. At 97-kilograms, Moore dominated Kent State’s Kyle Conel for his own spot. It was a revenge match for Moore, who fell to Conel in the NCAA Championships in March.

In all, 10 Buckeyes competed in the trials over the weekend, with three others, Te’Shan Campbell, Luke Pletcher and Kevin Snyder, all placing in their respective divisions. Team USA’s Senior World Championships are scheduled for later this month, with a number of Ohio State alumni competing.

“When it was his time to finally start in 2016, Booker injured his knee on the 13th play of the season opener against Bowling Green. In some ways, it feels like he hasn’t been able to get right since.”

-Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Ohio State’s linebacking corps struggled last season, even with veteran talent like Jerome Baker and Chris Worley anchoring the unit. However, despite the inconsistency that often plagued the group, a number of young players emerged throughout the season which gave a glimpse into what the future linebacking corps could be at Ohio State--especially now that Baker and Worley have both moved on to the NFL.

One of the players caught in the middle of this transition, however, is fifth-year senior Dante Booker. Booker showed significant potential as a young player on the 2014 National Championship team, during which he played in 11 games as a true freshman. After playing a supporting role in 2015, Booker seemed to find his chance to shine when he earned a starting role in 2016--only to get injured in the season opener. Booker was able to take a medical redshirt to recover and return in 2017, but still seemed to struggle after opening the season as a starter. In fact, by the end of the year, Tuf Borland had emerged as the heir apparent to lead the linebacking corps.

Booker sat out from spring practice after receiving shoulder surgery, which makes his role on Greg Schiano’s defense somewhat murky. Beyond Borland, other potential starters at linebacker include Justin Hilliard, Baron Browning and Malik Harrison, and where Booker stacks up among this group is unclear. Given the competition, it would seem that Booker is not currently in a position to earn a starting spot heading into the fall.

Booker also has the option to transfer, having graduated this past spring. Still, despite his injuries, Meyer seems to have been a fan of his fifth-year player throughout Booker’s time in Columbus, and, if he is able to overcome his injuries, he could prove to have a breakout season in his final year of eligibility.

The 2018 class will be inducted in September, with the linebacker legend adding his name to the history books.

Fresh off the news that three members of the Ohio State football team were listed on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot, OSU unveiled their own list for who’ll be inducted into the latest Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame.

James Laurinaitis, along with the nine other Hall of Famers, will be inducted at a dinner on Sept. 7 at the Ohio Union (tickets can be purchased through OSU here). On Sept. 8, the day of the Rutgers game, the class of 2018 will be introduced at halftime.

Laurinaitis had a phenomenal career in the Scarlet and Gray. The most decorated linebacker in school history, he was named to three consensus All-American teams—and is only one of eight OSU football members to hold that honor. He also was part of four Big Ten champion squads and made two appearances in the BCS championship game. In the 2008 title game loss vs. LSU, he set a championship game record with 18 tackles. Laurinaitis also picked up the Bronko Nagurski Award, an award for the nation’s top linebacker, as a sophomore. But, arguably, the most important accolade for the LB was that he went 4-0 against Michigan.

Here are the bio’s for the rest of the class of 2018.

Dick Bruggeman

A member of the men’s track team from 1967-70, Bruggeman won the 400-yard hurdle crown in 1968. Additionally, he picked up Indoor All-American honors in 1970 in the 600-yard dash, and finished as conference runner-up twice in the 400-yard hurdle. In 1972, Bruggeman won the 400-yard hurdle at the 1972 AAU meet, leading up to his bid for the 1972 Olympics. However, injuries forced him out of the Games in Munich, West Germany.

In the OSU record books, he owns the 600-yard and indoor mile relay times. But his biggest success came on the 400-yard hurdle, where his time of 48.6 was the fourth fastest on record.

Cassie Dickerson

Dickserson was on the OSU soccer team from 2008-10. In 2010, she picked up NSCAA First Team All-America and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors, and was a key part of a Buckeye defense that recorded 12 clean sheets. That stellar ‘10 team went on to win a Big Ten Championship, and advanced to the NCAA College Cup for the first time in school history.

Other notable accolades for Dickerson includes: First Team All-Big Ten and NSCAA All-Great Lakes Region (2009 and 2010), Big Ten Medal of Honor (2010), and was the Big Ten nominee for NCAA Women of the Year (2010).

Greg Drown

Part of the rifle team, Drown was a four-time letter earner, and led the Buckeyes to four-Big Ten titles. After earning his surveying and engineering degrees, Drown competed across the country, and won the Ohio State Championship in 1985, 1996, 1999.

Linda Haussener

One of the most decorated members of the OSU field hockey program, she was a first-team All-American selection in 2008, and a second-team and third-team selection in 2007 and 2006, respectively. She was also the 2008 Big Ten co-Offensive Player of the Year, in addition to being a unanimous first team all-conference selection.

Ray Hupp

Another member of the track and field team, Hupp earned first-team All-American honors as well as the 1971 NCAA decathlon title. A letter earner from 1969-71, Hupp competed at the 1972 Olympic trials and was enshrined in the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country.

Bryan Koniecko

Another great in his respective sport, Koniecko was a member of the men’s tennis team from 2006-09, and ended his career with the second-most combined wins in school history (254). With Koniecko in the fold, the Buckeyes were guided to four Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. In consecutive years (2008 and 2009), the Long Island, N.Y., native was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year. In those four glorious years in Columbus, Koniecko never lost at home.

In 2009, Ohio State’s first appearance in the national championship match came with Koniecko leading the way; that same year, Koniecko was ranked No. 1 and won the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Singles title.

Mike Pucillo

On the wrestling squad from 2007-10, Pucillo won the 184-pound national championship in 2008 behind a stellar 34-1 campaign. He found himself on three All-American teams, in addition to winning the Big Ten crown in ‘08.

Pucillo pulled together an impressive 43-match win streak and ended his career with a 107-16 mark. A leader of the program, he was a captain on three occasions, too.

Jerry Welsh

A player and coach of the OSU men’s hockey program, Welsh dazzled when he was near the ice. A three-time team MVP, Welsh netted 143 points on 81 goals and 62 assists from 1970-73.

The Buckeyes’ 1972 Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular season and tournament titles had Welsh as a key member on the ice. The success of the ‘72 season led to Welsh being named captain for the 1973 season.

Taking over as coach in 1976, Welsh was the man in charge until 1995. In 1983-84, he coached the Buckeyes to the No. 1 ranking—a first in team history. The Ontario native picked up CCHA Coach of the Year honors along the way in ‘83, and ended his time in Columbus with 328 wins.

Brandon Wynn

Two NCAA titles were won by Wynn on the rings, as a member of the men’s gymnastics team from 2008-11. Those crowns weren’t the only things he won, as Wynn picked up six All-American honors, a Big Ten championship on rings (2010), first-team All-Big Ten (2008 and 2010), and first All-America (2009) at the NCAA Championships.

In 2010, Wynn won the U.S. national title on rings, and helped the Americans place third in the ‘10 World Championships.

The Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame was created in 1977, and so far, has inducted 426 athletes, coaches and administrators.
