Last year was the first year the Buckeyes have only won 10 regular season games with Urban Meyer at the helm. With the firepower on offense, and the talented young players on defense, expect at least 11 victories for Ohio State before post-season play.

Plus, the over/under on the Buckeyes this fall is 9.5... which seems a little low.

“No one is beating Ohio State consistently in the Urban Meyer era, but Michigan State has been the best or worst matchup for the Buckeyes because of their stubborn, ponderous pace, steady tackling, and their willingness to punt on every possession.”

-Spencer Hall, SB Nation

For the most part, college rivalries are deeply ingrained in school history and petty (yet awesome) moments that will live forever. For example, Ohio State fans held no substantial ill will against Oklahoma... until Baker Mayfield planted OU’s flag in the middle of Ohio Stadium in 2017. Now, it’s pretty safe to assume that the Sooners are no longer be perceived as any old, neutral blue-blood program when they next face-off against the Buckeyes.

In Spencer Hall’s newest piece for SB Nation, he used pie charts to illustrate the make-up of some of the newer rivalries in college football, and what all goes into two teams and fan bases disliking each other to such extremes. Hall talks about the OSU vs. Michigan rivalry in his article as well — with another pie chart — but the real interesting rivalry to make the list is the other feud with a B1G team from the Mitten State.

OSU_MSU_pie_chart.JPG

Hall makes note that the 2017 edition of the Michigan State-Ohio State rivalry didn’t do much to add fire to the flame — with the Buckeyes claiming a commanding 48-3 win. But, with conference and national implications on the line almost every time they compete, not to mention enough surprise outcomes to keep things interesting, the rivalry has more than enough legs to stand on.

I figure, there’s a reason that Buckeye fans sing, “We don’t give a damn for the whole state of Michigan.” That has to include the Spartans, right!?

“I think Ohio State at 9.5 feels strange simply from the perspective of “they’ve been under 10 wins once since 2004,” and Oklahoma at 10.5 seems shaky even for someone who doesn’t think of the odds of a huge drop-off are very high.”

-Bill Connelly, SB Nation

The college football betting lines were released this week, which led two of SB Nation’s writers to have a chat about some of the crazy predictions and which bets seem like sure things. The over/under for the Buckeyes next season is 9.5 wins, which Connelly thought was a bit low considering the team’s track record, going back to even before Urban Meyer took over.

It should come as no surprise that Ohio State is expected to have a pretty solid 2018 season, especially with most of the offensive talent — aside from quarterback— having considerable experience playing in Meyer’s system. The team will also welcome an impressive group of incoming freshmen, so a 10-win season from the Buckeyes isn’t unreasonable by any measure.

The 2018 season non-conference slate includes Oregon State, TCU and Tulane, followed by an early season matchup against Penn State. Back in the rotation for the Big Ten contests, the Buckeyes are set to face Rutgers, Minnesota, Indiana, Purdue, Nebraska, and Maryland this season — in addition to Michigan State and Michigan.

While I could understand Ohio State notching up two losses this season, it’s hard to imagine that they drop three, considering the strength of schedule they’re facing. Sure, the team will rely on first-time starter Dwayne Haskins at quarterback, but he’s had the world on his shoulders for the Buckeyes before, and didn’t let it hold him back.

“I’m looking to be there four years, turn this program around, take us to some Big Ten titles,” Ahrens told cleveland.com. “That’s what’s on my mind. I’m definitely gonna be up to something, and yeah I think I can be a leader on the floor for my guys.”

-Justin Ahrens via Bill Landis, cleveland.com

With high school basketball season now over, and AAU underway, the incoming 2018 recruiting class is gearing up for their first taste of college ball. Incoming freshman Justin Ahrens has been using this time to talk to players that have made the transition before him, and try to be as ready-to-go as possible once he hits the court in Columbus.

In Landis’ article, he talks about the fact that Ahrens has had multiple practices with Luke Kennard — who just wrapped up his rookie season with the Detroit Pistons — and is taking advantage of any advice he can get. Despite being the lowest recruit in this year’s Buckeye class, Ahrens will bring much needed stability to Chris Holtmann’s squad, and should be someone who eventually becomes a pillar of the program by the time he’s out of eligibility.

Ahrens initially committed and then decommitted from Ohio State— thanks to the firing of Thad Matta—, but while he was taking visits to other schools, he told Landis that the Buckeyes were still in the back of his mind. Holtmann wouldn’t commit to giving Ahrens a set number of minutes each game, but did assure the incoming freshman that the team needs shooters, and if he earns that playing time, he’ll get it.

One of the best aspects about the Landis interview and profile, is that Ahrens seems like a guy who isn’t living in a fantasy world with regard to his potential. His feet are firmly on the ground, and he’s not afraid to put in the time and energy it’ll take to become the contributor he envisions for the Buckeyes.

The former Buckeye will be able to play immediately, and will have two years of eligibility remaining.

After receiving a business degree on May 6, Joe Burrow took two days to discuss his playing and academic future with his family and mentors, and then announced that he would exercise his option as a graduate to transfer to another school and to continue playing immediately.

Breaking: #OhioState transfer QB Joe Burrow has picked LSU, according to highly-placed #UC source. Had narrowed it to LSU and #Bearcats.

— Tom Groeschen (@TomGroeschen) May 18, 2018

With two years of eligibility remaining, today we learned that Burrow will be continuing his career at LSU. After a weekend trip to visit Ed Orgeron’s program, Burrow will be looking to replace another former Big Ten quarterback, Danny Etling, who transferred to the Bayou following two years at Purdue. Etling was taken in the final round of the NFL Draft by the New England Patriots in April.

The Tigers finished eighth in the SEC last season in passing yards per game with 203.5, yet were second-from-last in the league with only 23.1 passing attempts per game. LSU has only finished in the top half of the conference in passing yards per game once (6th in 2013) since the SEC expanded to 14 teams in 2012. Burrow will be competing with sophomore Myles Brennan for the starting job.

In limited action over two seasons as a Buckeye, Burrow completed 29 of 39 passing attempts for 287 yards and two touchdowns. However, in both 2016 and 2017, he has shown well in OSU spring games, going 15-of-22 for 238 yards last month at the ‘Shoe.

A source close to Joe Burrow said he has permission to talk to any school in the country, other than within the Big Ten.

If he wants to go to another Big Ten school, they'd have to file a special request, and most likely only Michigan and Michigan State would be blocked.

— Sean Callahan (@Sean_Callahan) May 9, 2018

Reports indicated that Burrow was able to speak with any school in the country, other than those in the Big Ten. If he had wanted to transfer to an in-league program— perhaps his father’s alma mater, Nebraska— he would have needed to file a special request with the university athletic program.

Burrow graduated from Athens High School, as his father, Jimmy Burrow, has been the defensive coordinator at Ohio University for 13 seasons. The 6-foot-three-inch quarterback was named the Ohio Gatorade High School Player of the Year in 2013, and came to Columbus as a four-star prospect.

However, slotted to be the primary backup to J.T. Barrett last season, Burrow broke his hand following through on a pass during a practice the week before the 2017 season began, and hitting a lineman’s helmet. From there, Dwayne Haskins seized the opportunity and quickly became a fan-favorite replacing Barrett in garbage-time in lop-sided victories. However, he officially staked his claim to the role of heir apparent by orchestrating a comeback against Michigan last November.

Haskins and Burrow were thought to be neck-and-neck throughout spring practice, as head coach Urban Meyer refused to name a favorite. So, with no guarantee that he would start for the Buckeyes, and a diploma in hand, Burrow decided to find a landing spot that would allow him to play right away.

We with Burrow the best... unless of course he ends up playing the Buckeyes!

The Buckeyes will look to put their B1G Tournament loss behind them as they take on the Bulls in the Gainesville Regional.

This weekend starts a pretty long stretch of NCAA regional and super regional games en route to the Women’s College World Series. After a pretty solid 2018 season, the Buckeye softball team will take the field on Friday, May 18 at 5 p.m. ET (on ESPNU) against USF in their first matchup of the NCAA Tournament.

The Ohio State softball team finished their regular season 34-13, and 14-8 in Big Ten play, before being eliminated in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament by (newly minted rival) Iowa. After a pretty boring six innings— which saw just a pair of runs scored between the teams to keep things tied up— the Hawkeyes went on a seventh-inning rally that finished off the Buckeyes, 5-1; thanks in no small part to unforced OSU errors.

Despite their short conference tournament run, the team still earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tourney, and will enter this weekend as the No. 2 seed in the Gainesville Regional. The Buckeyes will join USF, Florida and Bethune-Cookman for the double-elimination, weekend bracket. Each regional event will feature six games (seven, if necessary), with the winner advancing to a best-of-three series in the super regionals. (Full Bracket)

What should I know about USF?

The Bulls are heading into the NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed, thanks to a 38-21 record for the 2018 season. They may not have the best record, but they did make it the championship game in the AAC Tournament, before ultimately falling 4-1 to Tulsa.

At the plate, USF is batting .291 and claims 57 doubles, 46 home runs and 58 stolen bases, and Lindsey Devitt leads the team, hitting .390 with 60 hits, 43 RBI, 36 runs scored and seven homers. In the circle, a six-player pitching rotation has a 2.56 ERA along with 302 strikeouts in 389 innings, but Georgina Corrick -- who is 15-8 on the rubber — leads the Bulls with a 1.61 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 165.1 innings.

Is there any series history?

This marks just the sixth time ever that the Buckeyes and Bulls will meet on the diamond, with USF holding the overall series lead, 4-2. Ohio State last faced off against the Bulls in 2010, when the Buckeyes claimed a 1-0 win.

What’s the Buckeyes NCAA history?

The 2018 NCAA Tournament run will be Ohio State’s 10th appearance in search of their first national title, with this marking their third consecutive season, thanks to all-star head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly. Both the 2016 and 2017 runs started by way of the Knoxville Regional, with the Buckeyes losing in their first two games in both years.

In 2016, the Buckeyes were eliminated after falling to Arizona (2-0) and Tennessee (10-1), and last season, the team was knocked out of the tournament thanks to losses to USC Upstate (7-3) and Longwood (3-1). That means that making the tournament for a third time will be pretty meaningless unless Ohio State gets their first tournament win under Kovach Schoenly.

Overall, the Buckeyes are 13-18 in NCAA Tournament play, and the furthest they’ve ever advanced was in 2009, when the squad made it to the Super Regionals.

The Buckeyes dished out new offers to multiple prospects yesterday.

It’s the middle of May, which in the college football world means recruiting, recruiting, and recruiting. The Buckeye staff has been on the trails working tirelessly to bring the next batch of studs to Ohio State for the 2019 class. To the surprise of no one, the staff has already built a top-10 2019 class—and it’ll easily be near the top when all is said and done thanks to their efforts. With many more of their top targets set to give their pledge in the coming weeks and months, Ohio State is sure to see some continued good news to bolster their current cycle. As time for 2019 is certainly the first priority, the Buckeyes have already started on the future classes such as 2020 and 2021, hoping a head start will lead to solid relationships and of course, more top prospects headed to Columbus.

Headed to Illinois with the future in mind

One of the great aspects about being Ohio State in recruiting is not only dominating in your state for top prospects, but having the ability to recruit any and everywhere the football staff wants to. There’s seemingly nowhere the Buckeyes haven’t been able to go and secure the pledge of a top target. Another great aspect for the Buckeyes is being able to recruit in rival territories. While Illinois may not be a true rival, the state still plays home to Big Ten foes Illinois and Northwestern. While Ohio State usually wins both on and off the field for highly touted prospects against these two schools, it’s still common to have to fight against other conference rivals for any top recruit to come from Illinois.

Yesterday, Ohio State invaded Illinois—and meant business—as they sent out multiple offers. One prospect that was on the receiving end of the prolific Buckeye offer was 2021 defensive tackle Dominic Bass. Bass is a product of Chicago and attends Phillips Academy where the 6-foot-4, 250-pound stud has proven his worth on the gridiron. Only a high school sophomore, Bass probably can’t even attend the prom due to his age, but that really is the least of worries considering this prep star already holds double-digit offers from some of the more namely programs in the country. Schools such as Auburn, Florida, Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss, and now Ohio State have come calling for Bass, but more will surely follow suit.

Extremely blessed to say that I have received my 12th offer from The Ohio State University! #GoBuckeyes⭕pic.twitter.com/CsPlEzP5c7

— Dominic Bass³⁴ (@dominic_bass) May 18, 2018

Due to Dominic’s age, he does not have a current ranking on 247sports, but the time will come soon enough and it’s without a doubt Bass will be right at the top of the board. With so much time left in his recruitment, any school can work their way in to the sweepstakes, but Michigan is thought to be the very early front-runner in his recruitment. However, fortunately for Ohio State, when Urban Meyer goes against Michigan, he tends to win. After all, he’s undefeated head to head on the field, but hey, who’s counting right? Time will tell where they stand with Bass, but a relationship between the two will certainly start now with offer in hand.

Top prospect, sure, let’s bring him to Ohio State

Sticking in the Land of Lincoln, we said Ohio State was busy in Illinois yesterday and that’s nothing but the truth. Offering multiple top guys in the upcoming classes, the Buckeye staff , who’ve been incredible lately at landing receivers, decided it was time to try their luck again and do so in the 2020 class.

Enter, A.J. Henning, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound speedster from Frankfort, Ill., and you have the latest wideout to earn a Buckeye offer. Henning, a player that can line up out wide and also in the slot can do it all. He has the hands, speed, and the skills to be a major playmaker at the next level. With two full seasons still to be played in his prep career, it’s possible that more size and height could come, but even at his current stature, the infamous H-back role at Ohio State has his name all over it if he so chooses.

EXTREMELY BLESSED TO RECEIVE AN OFFER FROM THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY!!⭕#GoBuckeyes pic.twitter.com/MrJnMrcBAJ

— AJ Henning3️⃣ (@AJHenning3) May 17, 2018

Henning is no new name to many though as he currently grades out as not only the top overall prospect in Illinois for his class, but is also considered to be the fourth best receiver in the entire country, making him the 23rd best player at any spot in the nation, according to 247sports. An impressive kid to say the very least, A.J. holds over 20 scholarship offers and is currently thought to be a Notre Dame lean. While the Irish and anyone else would love to have this talent, the Buckeyes will make their best pitch and when that happens, anything is possible. As always, the Buckeyes and Urban Meyer always have a shot even if it’s not a great one. If Henning gets to campus in the future you can bet Ohio State will be in this one until the pen hits the paper.

To the the Lone Star State we go

If there’s a top five ranking in the country for high school football states and recruiting it probably consists of Florida, Texas, Ohio, Georgia and California—with more states in arguments for one of those five spots. Point being though, Texas is a state that will always find itself at or near the top of the boards when you’re talking about prep football and talent within the borders. The Lone Star State has been nothing but good to the Buckeyes and that’s exactly why Meyer and his gang have made it a priority to continue recruiting Texas as if it’s in their own back yard. With so many elite dudes each and every year, the Buckeyes know if they can set up camp in Texas, they’ll be well taken care of.

Yesterday, Ohio State was back camping down south again as they sent out another offer to a Texas running back. Something to take note of considering the last running back from Texas to come north and suit up for the Buckeyes has done pretty well in just one year of play. Seth McGowan, a 6-foot, 210 bruiser of a back announced via his Twitter account last night that Ohio State was his latest offer.

Truly grateful to have received an offer from Ohio State University #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/rKESOe1M8a

— Seth McGowan ™ (@Sjmcg_28) May 17, 2018

The 2020 back is ranked currently as the 30th best player in Texas for his class and is also a top-25 running back for 2020. With offers from the likes of Alabama, Oklahoma, and many more, it’s not out of the picture to think Seth will see his ranking increase, but that may not matter because Ohio State’s offer alone proves this kid can flat out play. An early leader may or may not be in effect, but the Buckeyes being in the picture now and having a proven track record in Texas is worth noting that McGowan may be a name to pay close attention to.

Quick Hits:

  • Ohio State coaches Zach Smith and Ryan Day were in attendance at Lake Travis (Austin, Texas) practice yesterday not only to see current commit Garrett Wilson, but to also see offered QB Hudson Card. It’s looking possible to have Lake Travis as the next pipeline to Ohio State.
  • A crystal ball prediction in favor of the Buckeyes was put in yesterday for Jameson Williams, a four-star receiver prospect out of St. Louis, Missouri. STL has been a major hotbed for the Buckeyes.

After being drafted in the third round of last month’s NFL Draft, Baker joins the Miami Dolphins’ linebacking corps.

“Just watch me every game. I just go out there and do what I do. That’s pretty much it for me. There is a lot of talking and all of that, but when it’s time to play, that’s what I do. Just play.”

-Former Ohio State linebacker Jerome Baker via Alain Poupart, Miami Dolphins

Last month, the Miami Dolphins drafted Jerome Baker in the third round of the NFL Draft, making Baker the 15th Ohio State linebacker to be drafted in the past 13 drafts. Baker will now join Raekwon McMillan, who was drafted last year by the Dolphins but missed the season due to injury, in Miami’s linebacking corps.

Baker has been fighting a bit of an uphill battle of late, which means he has even more to prove once he hits the field for the Dolphins. Not only are there questions about Baker’s role because he doesn’t quite possess the prototypical size for an NFL linebacker, but he also left the NFL Combine without showing just how fast he really is.

While to many a 4.53 40-yard dash might be plenty fast, Baker’s time at the NFL Combine wasn’t nearly as good as he had hoped. Despite a slow 40 time, there is no question that Baker has the ability to make big plays. Not only did Baker have a 68-yard interception return for a touchdown in 2016 against Oklahoma, but he hit double digits in tackles in a number of critical games for the Buckeyes the last two seasons.

Just because he is smaller than some of the star linebackers in the NFL, that doesn’t put the nail in Baker’s career. If anything, Baker will be fighting even harder to prove he belongs in the conversation with the elite linebackers in the NFL. If Baker is able to play to the potential that many know he possesses, then Miami got themselves quite a steal in the third round of the NFL Draft.

“We’re still seven months from the Early Signing Period, and potential departures will come into focus as the season progresses — as upperclassmen will excel or find themselves buried on the depth chart. But accepting commitments early on without the guarantee of an open roster spot ultimately depends on how much turnover Meyer and his staff want to deal with.”

-Andrew Lind, Eleven Warriors

Ohio State football was just recently able to get down to the 85 scholarship limit imposed by the NCAA, and next year, the Buckeyes might have even more work to do to reach that number if they keep accepting commitments. With just 10 seniors on the current roster, and nine commitments from the Class of 2019, the Buckeyes are already pressed for space on their roster next season.

The lack of available scholarships starting in 2019 is a problem that could very easily be cleared up, but a problem that wouldn’t be solved until after the Early Signing Day period. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see players like Nick Bosa, Mike Weber, and other juniors head to the NFL following this season, which would open up some scholarships.

Even though Urban Meyer is a master at recruiting, he’ll likely have a little more trouble this year, because he’ll have to tell recruits that while he wants them at Ohio State, he doesn’t exactly know if there will be a scholarship for them because of the roster crunch. In the end, Meyer and his staff will likely get who they want and still hit the 85 scholarship mark, it will just take a little more work this year than in the past.

“You know, men have been coaching men and women forever. So there is no secret. They’re student athletes. They’re people ... It’s just that women have not had the many opportunities that men have had to coach men and women.”

-Ohio State’s director of track and field Karen Dennis via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State’s track and field program has been tough to slow down lately. Two months ago the Buckeyes won the Big Ten indoor team title, and last week Ohio State won their first outdoor title since 1993. The leader of the program is Karen Dennis, who was named Big Ten Indoor Coach of the Year and Outdoor Coach of the Year. By winning the award, Dennis became the first woman to be named Big Ten coach of the year for a men’s track and field team.

In 2006, athletic director Gene Smith decided to split the men’s and women’s track and field team after the retirement of longtime coach Russ Rogers. Smith already had a long relationship with Dennis and was very familiar with her coaching style. The decision by Smith to promote the assistant coach to head coach of the women’s team was an easy one.

In 2012, men’s coach Robert Gary was let go, and after two years with an interim coach, Smith decided to combine the teams once again, leaving Dennis as the director of the program. The decision has been one of the best Smith has made during his time in Columbus.

The list of accomplishments from Dennis as not only an athlete, but as a coach is incredible, and she is still adding to it — recently named one of six 2018 Ohio State Glass Breakers. What Dennis is doing with the Buckeyes will open the door for even more women in the future to coach men teams. Ohio State’s track and field program is finding success and the reason for it is because of what Dennis brings to the team.
