The Buckeyes will face No. 2 Purdue on Wednesday.

Following the conclusion of the Big Ten regular season schedule on Saturday, the conference released the eight-team bracket for this week’s conference tournament. After losing two of three against the Michigan State Spartans over the weekend, Ohio State is slotted into the seventh-seed, and will face No. 2 Purdue on Wednesday at 1 p.m. CT from TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb.

The way that the B1G tournament works is a little usual, as the eight teams are broken up into two brackets, with the champs of each four-team, double-elimination pod meeting in a winner-take-all title game on Sunday, May 27. The tournament champion will receive the conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Last weekend in Columbus, the Buckeyes took two of three from their first round opponent Boilermakers. However, in early April, OSU dropped two of three against the No. 6 Hawkeyes, whom they could end up facing. Ohio State did not play No. 3 Michigan during the regular season this year.

We will have much more coverage of the B1G baseball tournament throughout the week here at Land-Grant Holy Land.

The Buckeyes blew a lead against the Gators on Saturday, and must beat them twice on Sunday to advance.

It was an up-and-down Saturday for the Ohio State softball team which saw them give up a late-game lead against No. 2 Florida in perhaps the most painful way possible, only to fall behind immediately in an elimination rematch against USF. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, they were able to bounce back and get the win against the Bulls to move into the Gainesville regional finals on Sunday.

In their third-straight NCAA Tournament, the Buckeyes were bracketed with USF, No. 2 Florida, and Bethune-Cookman in the double-elimination region. After defeating the USF Bulls, 3-1, on Friday night, OSU faced the host Gators on Saturday, with the loser of that game taking on to face the winner of the USF vs. Bethune-Cookman contest.

Thanks to besting the Bulls in Saturday’s nightcap, the Buckeyes will have a chance to avenge their Saturday meltdown against the Gators on Sunday. However, since UF is 2-0 in this double-elimination round-robin, the Buckeyes must beat the Gators twice to advance to a best-of-three series in the super regionals.

What happened on Saturday?

OSU 2, UF 10 | Six innings

The tale of Saturday’s first game can be told in one statistic: bases-on-balls. Ohio State pitching gave up a combined 15 walks against Florida in the day’s opener. What makes it worse is that UF— the second-ranked team in the country— doesn’t exactly need any help in the offensive department.

However, despite giving up 11 of the free passes herself, Buckeye starting pitcher Shelby McCombs actually maintained a scoreless tie through four innings of work, and her offense staked her to a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Buckeye designated player Ashley Goodwin got OSU on the board with a solo home run; her 10th of the season. Then in the fifth, Lilli Piper drove in Becca Gavin to spot McCombs a two-run lead.

However, in the bottom of the inning, a pair of walks and a Piper error loaded the bases with one out. Jaimie Hoover drove in the first run for UF, and after a fielder’s choice stopped a run at the plate, Amanda Lorenz drove the ball into right field, giving the Gators a lead that they would never relinquish.

In fact, the home team ran off 10-straight runs to end the game in the sixth due to a run-rule. Certainly not what Buckeye coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly would have wanted from a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.

OSU 3, USF 2

After the demoralizing defeat in the first game of the day, the Buckeyes had to turn around and get back up for a rematch with USF, who had beaten Bethune-Cookman 3-0 to end the Wildcats’ season.

In the day’s nightcap, USF’s Brooke Hartman drove in Lindsey Devitt in the top of the first, and Amber Atkinson scored in the second on a passed ball, giving the Bulls a 2-0 lead (although replay called into question the accuracy of the umpire’s call on the bang-bang play).

However, from there, the scoring was all Buckeyes, as OSU exploded for three runs in the third. Taylor White led off with a single, and was followed up by a Bailee Sturgeon hit. Next, Piper reached on an error that also allowed White to score.

After a pop out, and then a stolen base for Piper, McCombs singled to bring in Sturgeon and move Piper to third, who then got home on a Goodwin sacrifice bunt.

That would be all of the scoring that the game would see, as Morgan Ray would go the distance in the circle for the Buckeyes, striking out five, walking one, and giving up a lone earned run.

What’s on tap for Sunday?

Having already lost a game, the Buckeyes will have the unenviable task of needing to knock off the second-ranked team in the country... twice... at home, in order to keep their season alive.

The first game will be at noon ET, and should Ohio State force the “if necessary” game, that will happen almost immediately thereafter, with the game time tentatively set for 2:30 p.m. ET.

The winner of the OSU-UF matchup will advance to the Super Regionals next weekend, where they will face the winner of the No. 15 Texas A&M vs. Baylor regional final. The Aggies have the advantage of being undefeated, as Baylor lost the regional’s opening game against McNeese State, 11-10.

After picking up their first NCAA win under Kelly Kovach Schoenly, the Buckeyes will face off against one of the best in the country.

In the first game of their third-straight trip to the NCAA regionals, the Ohio State Buckeyes used a sixth-inning rally to defeat the USF Bulls 3-1 in their Game 1 matchup. Now, the Buckeyes will face off with the region’s host, the No. 2 Florida Gators in their second game of the weekend on Saturday, May 19 at 2:30 p.m. ET, after UF no-hit the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, 8-0, on Friday.

The Ohio State softball team finished their regular season 34-13, and 14-8 in Big Ten play, before being eliminated in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament by Iowa.

Despite their short conference-tournament run, the team still earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tourney. The Buckeyes were bracketed with USF, No. 2 Florida, and Bethune-Cookman for the double-elimination regional. Each region will feature six or seven games (depending on if the “if-necessary game” ends up being necessary), with the winner advancing to a best-of-three series in the super regionals. (Full Bracket)

What happened in Game 1?

Friday’s game was a pitching duel between OSU and USF, as the score remained knotted at zero into the bottom of the sixth inning. Buckeye pitcher Shelby McCombs went the distance giving up just one run on two hits, while striking out five. The Bulls’ Georgina Corrick had been matching McCombs out for out, but things turned south for USF in the home half of the sixth.

McCombs singled, and then was lifted for pinch-runner Amy Balich, who advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, before the bases were loaded on back-to-back walks to Kallie Boren (yes, of those Borens) and Becca Gavin.

Then, Buckeye head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly made the decision that would ultimately decide the game, calling on freshman Taylor Stevens to pinch hit. Stevens roped a double off of the base of the wall in right-center field clearing the bases, and giving OSU the 3-0 lead. The three RBI were the first of Stevens’ OSU career, and they couldn’t have come at a better time.

— NCAA Softball (@NCAAsoftball) May 18, 2018

USF did get on the board in the top of the seventh with an RBI single from Lindsey Devitt, but it wasn’t enough, as the Buckeyes collected their first NCAA win under the program’s third-year head coach.

“It was a pitching dogfight out there,” exclaimed Schoenly. “It’s a classic postseason battle with it coming down to that one big hit. So much credit to the hitters that battled to get on base in the sixth and then a clutch performance by Stevens!”

What should I know about Florida softball?

Hmmm, what should you know about Florida Gator softball? First and foremost, they’re really good. With a 51-8 record on the season, they earned the nation’s second overall seed heading into the postseason.

Their only loss in the last five weeks came in the middle game of their three-game series against the No. 14 LSU Tigers. LSU won 3-0 in that one, but the Gators sandwiched the L between 7-0 and 5-3 victories.

UF swept through the SEC Tournament last weekend, winning three games against top-15 teams by a combined score of 18-5. They first dispatched the No. 13/15 Alabama Crimson Tide 5-2, then followed up by defeating No. 7/8 Tennessee, 10-2, and finally won the conference tournament title by beating No. 12/14 South Carolina 3-1.

The Gators have earned their place at the top of the softball food chain with an impressively well-rounded game. They are the only team in the SEC to rank in the top-four in team batting (.290), team pitching (1.33), and team fielding (.984).

At the plate, Florida is paced by junior outfielder Amanda Lorenz, who is hitting .418 on the season with 55 RBI. In the circle, UF has two of the best pitchers in the SEC. Junior Kelly Barnhill has a 0.99 ERA and a 26-1 record in 35 appearances to go along with her 281 strikeouts. Then senior Aleshia Ocasio also boasts a 1.22 ERA and 20-6 record in 28 appearances. Ocasio has 150 Ks compared to just 14 walks.

Against Bethune-Cookman on Friday, Barnhill picked up the win, while Ocasio closed the door on the 8-0 no-hit victory. The pair combined for 14 strikeouts and just a single walk.

Nicole DeWitt and Jaimie Hoover both hit homers for the Gators.

What’s the Buckeyes NCAA history?

The 2018 berth will be Ohio State’s 10th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, with this marking their third-consecutive season thanks to Schoenly. Both the 2016 and 2017 title runs started by way of the Knoxville Regional, with the Buckeyes losing in their first two games in both years.

In 2016, the Buckeyes were eliminated after falling to Arizona (2-0) and Tennessee (10-1), and last season, the team was knocked out of the tournament thanks to losses to USC Upstate (7-3) and Longwood (3-1). That means, making the tournament for a third time will be pretty meaningless unless Ohio State gets their first tournament win under Kovach Schoenly.

Overall, the Buckeyes are 134-18 in NCAA Tournament play, and the furthest they’ve ever advanced was in 2009, when the squad made it to the Super Regionals.

Also, women’s golf heads into second-round play in their NCAA Tournament

The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s tennis squad is moving on in the NCAA Tournament, as their 4-1 win against the Minnesota Golden Gophers sends them onward to the quarterfinal stage.

In the Scarlet and Gray’s Round of 16 victory over the Gophers, things looked good from the start. The Bucks had an early lead in all three doubles matches, however, the Gophers managed to claw their way back in one of them.

On the singles courts, OSU dominated. Mikael Torpegaard, the No. 6 ranked player, defeated No. 53 Felix Corwin by a score of 7-6(5), 6-0. Torpegaard is the highest ranked player for the Bucks; Corwin is the highest ranked player for his squad. The players also squared off in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, with Corwin getting the best of Torpegaard.

Torpegaard’s NCAA win, combined with the victories from Hunter Tubert and No. 96 Kyle Seelig, set the course for the Buckeyes third win of the season against Minnesota. Seelig took down Josip Krstanovic, the third time that’s happened this season as well. For Tubert, he’s off to a 4-0 record in dual matches

No. 41 JJ Wolf, No. 92 John McNalley were also in action—and were winning—before the match was called in favor of Ohio State.

Now in the quarterfinals, the Buckeyes have momentum. They are riding a 20-match winning streak, and have a 32-2 record this season to go along with their No. 3 seed.

Mississippi State awaits the Buckeyes on Sunday. The match is scheduled for noon ET, and will take place in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Women’s golf update

The Buckeyes women’s golf team is also taking part in their NCAA Tournament. After the first round concluded on Friday at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., the Scarlet and Gray sit in 19th place at 22-over-par.

Just three strokes behind Oklahoma for 15th place, Ohio State is in the middle of things as second-round play tees off at 2:21 ET. While just on the fringe of a top-20 spot, the Buckeyes are shooting well on par-3 holes—they have the third-best scoring at 2-over. Senior Rio Watanabe and junior Niki Schroeder were both tripped up on the 17th hole (a par-4) on Friday, and will look to get back on track on Saturday afternoon. Watanabe notched four birdies en route to an 80 on the scorecard in first-round action, and Schroeder tallied an 82.

MotS&G What To Expect: Quarterbacks

What To Expect: Quarterbacks

As we crawl toward the better half of the year, we are a couple of months away from the start of a new era at Ohio State. This year, on both sides of the ball, the team will feature a few new faces at critical positions, but they will also feature some familiar ones as they hunt as a team, a unit for a CFB Playoff berth after falling short of that feat at the end of the season.

At the end of spring practice, there was a lot of uncertainty at arguably one of the most important positions on a football team, and this competition between this particular group went down to the wire.

Enter Dwayne Haskins. He recently received the go-ahead nod from his head coach giving him the first shot at the starting gig. The spring game was mesmerizing, watching him battle it out with Tate Martell and Joe Burrow. Securing the starting job and living out his dream of starting at Ohio State came and it cost them a guy like Joe Burrow, who recently announced that he is transferring to LSU.

Joe Burrow lit all the fireworks in the spring game, especially with the last second bomb to the sideline that resulted in another touchdown before time expired. The all-important exclamation point, but neither Burrow or Haskins gained an edge over the other. With his departure, the team is left with Haskins as “the guy”, Tate Martell as his backup, and Matthew Baldwin as the 3rd teamer, who is still on the mend. There are also walk-ons in Danny Vanatsky and Kory Curtis who both are there as well.

What To Expect:

Dwayne is now the man and one would expect the offense to rely more heavily on the passing game due to his obvious talent for tossing the pigskin around but expect the offense to be truly balanced. With JT (God bless his soul), he was a true dual-threat that was overutilized as a runner and it left the running backs as an afterthought when they needed yardage.

With Haskins, he is not as fast or as shifty as Barrett, but expect the QB draw usage to decline during his era. Comparing Barrett and Haskins would be a mistake because they are two different players with different skillsets, but with Haskins, the WR’s and the TE’s will get more chances through the air.

Haskins has the arm strength and the poise (TTUN game) to stand in the pocket and hit his receivers in stride, which is what has been missing since Devin Smith left for the pros. The deep ball will make its return to the scarlet and gray and that will free up space for the RB’s to frustrate the opposing defenses. He has a well of weapons at his disposal and a few more will be joining the team in a few weeks.

Tate Martell earned enough consideration to have his own set package of plays to add another dimension to the offense. He didn’t do too hot in the passing game, but man is he elusive. He could do some serious damage and he would be utilized as such because of shiftiness and speed.

All in all, I expect the PPG to go up a little bit more and more balanced focus on the passing and running game. With Haskins leading the team, there is a lot of potential and explosiveness that could be on the horizon and I am excited just imagining it in my mind. We won’t truly know how the position battle will pan out, but I cannot wait.
