The former Buckeye Heisman Trophy winner sees the potential that Haskins brings.

“But there are still plays on tape that can provide a glimpse at Dwayne Haskins and his immense potential — and few people are more qualified to break him down than a Heisman winner.”

- Austin Ward, Lettermen Row

Former Ohio State quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith joined Austin Ward at Lettermen Row to break down some of the film of new starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins. As he goes through and points out some good and bad things in Haskins’ game and why he can be successful at this level and beyond, what Smith saw was a future Heisman winner.

It’s a pretty neat sight to see Smith showing things that some might not notice that will be important to a future Buckeye QB. Smith also discussed his experiences playing in Ann Arbor, and some of the issues that he had to overcome in his career.

Smith was the last player at Ohio State to win the Heisman Trophy back in 2006, when he helped lead the Buckeyes to an undefeated regular season and a spot in the national championship game.

Haskins enters the 2018 season as a first-time starter, but expectations are high for the sophomore quarterback after he put on a show against Michigan last season in relief of an injured J.T. Barrett. He has the tools to succeed, and the talent around him is unquestioned, so it makes sense for the hype to build.

“[Preseason AP All-Americans] Defense: Nick Bosa, defensive end, Ohio State”

- Ralph D. Russo, Associated Press

The Associated Press released its list of preseason All-Americans for the upcoming season. Only one player from Ohio State was selected, and it shouldn’t be a surprise that the lone Buckeye representative was defensive end Nick Bosa.

The defensive end is entering his third season at Ohio State and it could very well be his last as he looks to potentially join his brother in the NFL. Last season Bosa accounted for 32 tackles and seven sacks, and was named first-team All-Big Ten.

Bosa also leads an impressive defensive line this season that features Chase Young, Robert Landers, and Dre’Mont Jones. Should Bosa have yet another great season (all signs are pointing to that being the case), he could play a large part in getting the Buckeyes back to the College Football Playoff and potentially competing for a national championship.

“Grinch is known for having an easy to grasp, player-friendly scheme. Perhaps he can help Schiano simplify the way OSU calls things.”

- Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Ohio State hired Alex Grinch from Washington State during the offseason in what seemed to be a mostly popular hire. Grinch did some great things with the Cougars in his time there, and helped mold the defense that competed with some of the best offenses in the country.

It was also a good hire because current defensive coordinator Greg Schiano is probably not long for his current position, as he was almost hired as the head coach at Tennessee earlier this year.

Grinch seems to be the next in line to take over for Schiano, whenever he ends up leaving Columbus, and while the impact might not be felt too much this season, the Buckeyes are glad to have Grinch. Bill Landis took a look at how Grinch’s presence will be felt this season, mostly coming in third-down situations, but it will be nice to see Schiano and Grinch interacting, and perhaps learning things from each other.

Ohio State’s defense has been superb the past few seasons, and Schiano has been a big part of that.

The Buckeyes will meet Michigan State and Purdue twice; get Michigan and Penn State once.

The Ohio State Buckeyes can now pencil in their 2018-19 men’s basketball schedule, as the Big Ten unveiled dates for their conference slate.

OSU’s first game against a conference opponent will take place on Dec. 2 against Minnesota. A few days later, the Bucks travel to the United Center in Chicago to face Illinois.

After a four-game set with non-conference foes, it’s back to B1G play on Jan. 5 with Michigan State.

Notable conference games for Ohio State include Purdue at home on Jan. 23, Michigan on the road on Jan. 29, Penn State at home on Feb. 7, Indiana on the road on Feb. 10, Michigan State (again) in East Lansing on Feb. 17, and another meeting with Purdue on March 2.

Even though the former Buckeye dropped to the No. 48 selection, his fellow draft peers think he was a steal.

This past NBA Draft saw a lot of talented basketball players hear their names get called. But, how does the class itself think it’ll end up when the 2018-2019 season comes to a close? NBA.com caught up with members of the 2018 draft class, and asked questions including who players thought would be Rookie of the Year, which rookie will have the best career, and who was the steal of the draft at the position they were drafted?

For that latter question, the consistent answer was former Ohio State Buckeye forward. Keita Bates-Diop, who went 48th overall to the Minnesota Timberwolves, was determined by his draft peers to be the biggest steal of the class. KBD received 13 percent of the votes—just leading Michael Porter Jr. and Lonnie Walker IV, who each received 10 percent of the votes. Last year, Utah’s Donovan Mitchell was voted as the steal of the draft.

If you’re a fan of Buckeye State basketball in general, the survey showed some more good news. Collin Sexton, who went to the Cleveland Cavaliers, tied DeAndre Ayton (the No. 1 overall pick) as who the class thought would be named Rookie of the Year. Both received 18 percent of the vote.

Chicago’s Wendell Carter Jr. was declared as the one draft pick who would have the best overall career; he received 13 percent of the vote. Trae Young was named best shooter with 47 percent, as well as being named best playmaker.

Unsurprisingly, when asked who their favorite player in the NBA was, 29 percent of the class said it was LeBron James.

Quick Question for the Attorneys Out There

Not an attorney but I work in employee benefits. The short answer is you can submit claims for 90 days after termination unless you opt for COBRA. Here is a more thorough explanation I found:

"There is a deadline for submitting claims if you have a balance remaining after your plan year has ended or after your date of termination. If you have terminated employment, and still have money left in your FSA account, you have 90 days from the date of termination to submit receipts. These receipts must have a date of service on or after the first day of your current plan year and not after your date of termination. So any qualifying expenses you had during the plan year while you were still employed would be eligible for reimbursement. You cannot submit receipts with dates of services after your date of termination. If you have not yet incurred any expenses and want to access the funds in your account to avoid losing the money, you have the option to continue your FSA after your termination through COBRA."

PM me if any more questions.
Thanks.....

Ohio State sends out its first scholarship offer since the Urban Meyer investigation kicked off.

Facing uncertainty with the status of head coach Urban Meyer following the investigation into the domestic abuse allegations against former wide receiver coach Zach Smith, the Ohio State Buckeyes football program has shifted its focus onto preparation for the upcoming season.

The coaching staff is back to hitting the recruiting trail and the Buckeyes offered 2020 athlete, Jecoryan Davis-Hamilton (Apopka, FL / Apopka) late Sunday night.

— Jecoryan Davis (@JecoryanDavis) August 20, 2018

Davis-Hamilton plays quarterback for his high school football team, however, he is being recruited to play multiple positions at the next level because of his elite athleticism. The 6-foot-1, 160-pounder rushed for 383 yards on 42 carries while recording three touchdowns in a spring game win over Orange City University in May.

While Ohio State has already secured a commitment at QB in its 2020 class in four-star Jack Miller, it could still view Davis-Hamilton for multiple positions on offense.

While Davis-Hamilton has yet to receive a ranking by any major national recruiting database, he has begun receiving scholarship offers to play for some of the country’s top programs. In addition to Ohio State, he has received offers from Cincinnati, Syracuse, Virginia and Miami (FL). He also visited Auburn last fall but has yet to receive a scholarship offer.

Ohio State has gone most of August without presenting a recruit with a scholarship. However, with a decision regarding Meyer and his future with the program expected this week, along with the early signing period quickly approaching, the coaching staff will likely refocus its efforts onto recruiting soon.

LGHL Ohio State is suddenly flying under the radar in the Big Ten

The Buckeyes are the No.5 ranked team in the AP Poll, but the talent on their team could take them much higher.

“Regardless of what happens with Meyer, the floor of this team should be competing with anybody in the country on the field.”

-Dan Murphy, ESPN

With continuing uncertainty surrounding Urban Meyer’s status as head coach, it was no surprise that Ohio State dropped to the No. 5 spot in the AP Preseason Poll released today. However, with the perceived demotion, the Buckeyes find themselves in the position of flying under the radar with what is still a championship-caliber team. Especially given that Wisconsin snagged the No. 4 spot, Ohio State suddenly has far less of a target on its back in conference play in what remains a highly-competitive Big Ten.

Still, it remains that Ohio State has been without a head coach for three critical weeks in the offseason as the university conducts its investigation. How well-prepared the Buckeyes are heading into their week one matchup against Oregon State in Columbus now depends largely on the success of veteran assistant coaches and coordinators like Greg Schiano and Kevin Wilson. The fact that both have previous head coaching experience on their own should bode well for their respective units’ preparations.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, success may be redefined for this Ohio State team. Widely considered a future conference champion and playoff contender, the Buckeyes are now relegated to the second-highest ranked team in the Big Ten and questionable in terms of how they can leverage their on-field talent without Meyer to garner a playoff spot.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Wisconsin finds itself in a position to not only win the West for the third straight season, but to potentially take the conference title for the first time since 2012. The Badgers have appeared in three of the last four Big Ten Championship games, losing all three to opponents from the East. Penn State, meanwhile, looks to take advantage in the East--a feat that seems more favorable with home matchups against Michigan State, Wisconsin and Ohio State.

“If he indeed starts there, he will follow Pat Elflein in 2016 and Billy Price in 2017 as guards who moved over to center.”

-Tim Bielik, Cleveland.com

With the departure of Billy Price this spring, Ohio State is once again in the position of needing to break in a new center. For the past two seasons, that void has been filled on an annual basis by a converted guard. The strategy has proved to be a successful one: Price and, previously, Pat Elflein won the Rimington Award as the nation’s top center in two consecutive seasons. Elflein started at center for 14 games during his rookie season with the Vikings. Price, as the 21st-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, looks to do the same in Cincinnati.

Now, it looks like the Buckeyes could be continuing in the same vein as Michael Jordan, who started at left guard for the past two seasons, has been working out as the first-team center. According to acting head coach Ryan Day, Jordan has been working in snaps at center during practice this week with fifth-year senior Brady Taylor, who backed up Price last season. Taylor, who was also Price’s roommate, seemed to be the heir apparent to the center position throughout spring practice. He has played in 29 games throughout his career and recorded a career-high 55 snaps against UNLV in 2017, but has obviously not had the chance to start, having played behind Elflein and Price.

Entering his true junior season, Jordan looks in many ways like Price, who built up a storied college career in Columbus. Like Price, Jordan has started every game since he began his true freshman season. After a strong sophomore campaign, Jordan was recognized with first-team All-Big Ten honors last season. Previously, Jordan was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. He’s been solid at his guard spot, but the Buckeyes have other guards like Demetrius Knox and Branden Bowen to fill the role if Jordan should need to be moved fully over to the center spot.

“Both of them will play in the first game but Shawn will be the starter. Mike will have a chance to get his reps.”

-TCU head coach Gary Patterson, via Barrett Sallee, CBS Sports

With the start of college football less than two weeks away, TCU, Ohio State’s week three opponent, has announced its starting quarterback. As expected, head coach Gary Patterson named sophomore Shawn Robinson to the role over Penn transfer Michael Collins.

Robinson backed up Kenny Hill all of last season, throwing for 184 yards and three touchdowns in 2017. Importantly, much of Robinson’s total offense came when he started a game in place of Hill. In that outing, Robinson completed 6-of-17 passing for 85 yards and a touchdown against Texas Tech. He added 84 yards on the ground as well, demonstrating the rushing ability which made him the No. 6 dual-threat quarterback in the 2017 recruiting class.

Robinson will also have an additional two weeks to settle into his starting role, as the Horned Frogs face Southern and SMU in their first two games of the season. As a whole, expectations are high for TCU, which ranks No. 16 in the AP Preseason Poll released today. The Horned Frogs were expected to finish third in the Big 12 at the conference media days last month, behind only Oklahoma and West Virginia. TCU finished ninth in the AP Poll at the conclusion of the 2017 season, having defeated Stanford in the Alamo Bowl.

Patterson acknowledged that while Robinson had earned the starting role to open the season, he would play both Robinson and Collins during the season--including in the team’s first game. With this flexibility at quarterback, the starter could conceivably change by the time the Horned Frogs take on Ohio State Sept. 15. Collins transferred from Penn following the 2017 season, despite being widely expected to take over the starting role from Alek Torgersen following the latter’s graduation. Collins played in four games as a backup, completing two passes for 17 yards in one season.

The Buckeyes ill also host the Gophers before the new year.

According to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, the Ohio State men’s basketball team will be visiting the Windy City this December to get a jump on the Big Ten season, as they take on the Illinois Fighting Illini. Rothstein also reports that the Buckeyes will host Minnesota in December as well.

Source: Illinois will host Ohio State as part of part of the Big Ten's early season conference games in December. The game will be played in Chicago and not in Champaign.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) August 20, 2018

The B1G experimented with having conference games before the new year last season, and the Buckeyes took advantage, picking up victories over Wisconsin and Michigan to give them a leg up heading into the traditional league slate.

The full Big Ten schedule will be released in the coming days, but Rothstein has a pretty comprehensive list of the early season match-ups in his Twitter feed.

After an exhibition game against UNC Pembroke, Chris Holtmann’s Buckeyes will officially open their season against the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Queen City on Nov. 7. The rest of the non-conference schedule will feature tilts against Creighton, Syracuse, UCLA, and more.
