coff-150x150.jpeg

The wind whistled sharply as the sun began to rise on this crisp Sunday morning. John Wilce rolled over from his slumber, having not slept well at all. His night had been dominated with recalling the day before. It had indeed been an event.

“Coffee?” He whispered to his sleeping wife, Minerva, who had the blanket over her head in an attempt to warm herself from the frigid temperature of the early frost and cooling weather.

“Yeah that’ll be nice. Slap some blocks in the burner too. I am freezing.” She squeaked from beneath the covers.

John laughed as he pushed himself up, leaning above her covered body. “Anything for my little princess!” He kissed the blanket where he believed her head would be.

He slipped on a trench coat slung over a chair next to the door of their room. She was right. It was rather cold.

In the preparation of making a pot of coffee he simply could not rid the remembrances of the day before. He tilted his head sideways as he slipped on his rounded spectacles. A smile overcame him, rather mischievously.

The day before his team, The Ohio State University Buckeyes, over off High Street between Woodruff and 17th Street, at Ohio Field, put on some show. Word had to be nationwide now. He was certain of it. The telegraph he had always surmised was a wondrous invention, though depending upon the news, certainly an uninviting contraption as well. Oberlin come this morning would indeed be in camp of believing the telegraph was an intrusive nuisance.

The day was a cloudy and cool afternoon. The crowds were large – larger than John recalled ever seeing at any game. The stadium itself was at full capacity which bordered on 14,000. But the out-lining hills and roof-top spectators drove the number higher – much higher. John estimated at least 20,000, if not closer to 25,000. Football was coming into its own at The Ohio State University, as it had already exploded out East. It made him quite pleased.

The Buckeyes had scored on their first three offensive possessions. The young, well-touted, halfback out of Columbus’s East High School, Chic Harley, was all they said he was. He could run like the wind. He had total upper body strength which made tackling him above the waist more of a wrestling match that the tackler often lost out on. His leg strength was the most powerful John had ever witnessed in a kid before. Tackling him below the waist was a simple run-over. Chic would score those first three touch-downs. The first was tremendous – from the Buckeyes’ own thirty yard line – seventy yards out. John recalled the play was a pitch out to a flanked Chic. He snatched the toss and was gone. To John it looked as if no one had touched him. The second was more of a power drive from thirty-three yards out. Chic cuddled the ball in his belly and just steamrolled into the center of the line. Men much larger than him were mowed over and left looking up and behind them. The third touchdown was from six yards away from the end zone. It was a tad more dramatic. Fullback Dick Boesel had fumbled the ball as he plowed into the line. The ball zipped backwards in an awkward bounce before this magical kid, Chic, ran up to it, as if on cue, the ball leaping in to his hands as if on command, and he stood in the end zone holding the ball in the air before everyone even realized there had been a fumble. Even the referees, dazed momentarily, looked at one another before raising their arms to signal a touchdown.

Oberlin would be in for a long afternoon. The Buckeyes had 33 points by the end of the first quarter. At the half it would be 67-0 in the Buckeyes favor. Chic Harley would eventually score six touchdowns, and with his drop-kick extra points add another five points to his total. Halfback Fred Norton pounded out five touchdowns, the longest from 55-yards out. And fullback Dick Boesel would have four for himself.

The smell of coffee now filled the small kitchen. Minerva strolled into the room with the blanket wrapped around her. “Firewood?”

“Sorry!” He immediately fumbled through the stack alongside the wall, tossing them into the small wood burning stove. “Momentarily – my dear.”

“Coffee?” She smiled.

“That’ll be sooner.” He reached for two tin cups on a self above the stove.

“You should be ashamed of yourself!” Minerva sarcastically laughed.

“Yeah!” John knew the direction she was taking. “128-0 is a little over-kill…”

Minerva laughed loudly. “You think!”

“It just happened… ah…so quickly too.”

John was almost reluctant to see what the morning paper headlines would be. But he then realized he couldn’t be bothered by such trivial complexities. He had to prepare his team for their Western Conference opening the following Saturday against a strong Illinois team.

John and Minerva sipped their steaming cups of coffee enjoying their moment in their overly chilled house near The Ohio State University campus.

LGHL How often do elite recruits become playmakers at Ohio State?

How often do elite recruits become playmakers at Ohio State?

usa-today-9253722.0.jpg

It's one thing to recruit elite talent. But how well does Ohio State develop it?

Ohio State’s recruiting class for 2017 is good. Really good. Potentially historically good, and certainly good enough to make a case for the best recruiting class in the country, even though it’s likely to be a bit on the small side. It also just got even better, thanks to the commitment for four-star defensive back Amir Riep, who picked the Buckeyes yesterday, and the commitment of Chase Young, an elite DE who picked Ohio State on Friday night.

If everybody sticks with their commitment, the Buckeyes will be even more loaded with talent headed into the future. But, for as predictive as recruiting rankings are, they’re not perfect, and an elite recruiting rating doesn’t guarantee success in big time college football. That requires injury luck, hard work, and talent development from the coaching staff.

Ohio State hasn’t been a stranger to recruiting elite talent, especially not during the Urban Meyer era. How often do those players turn into regular contributors for the Buckeyes?

To find out, we looked at every Ohio State player with a high four-star recruiting composite score that Ohio State signed in the 2012 and 2013 classes. We settled on the somewhat arbitrary cutoff point of a .9400 or higher composite ranking from 247 Sports. Those are players who are not just four-star recruits, but typically in the top 150 players, nationally, in their recruiting classes. We then checked to see if they became regular contributors for Ohio State.

Here’s the data:

Player name Year Position Composite Ranking Contributor?
Bri'onte Dunn 2012 RB 0.9537 No
Joshua Perry 2012 LB 0.9409 Yes
Noah Spence 2012 DE 0.9974 Yes?
Adolphus Washington 2012 DT 0.9884 Yes
Tommy Schutt 2012 DT 0.9601 Yes
Se'Von Pittman 2012 DE 0.9565 No
Vonn Bell 2013 S 0.9867 Yes
Jalin Marshall 2013 WR 0.983 Yes
Joey Bosa 2013 DE 0.9809 Yes
Eli Apple 2013 CB 0.9747 Yes
Mike Mitchell 2013 LB 0.9726 No
Cam Burrows 2013 CB 0.9719 Yes
Ezekiel Elliott 2013 RB 0.9693 Yes
Dontre Wilson 2013 APB 0.9685 Yes?
Evan Lisle 2013 OL 0.9464 No
Marcus Baugh 2013 TE 0.9597 Yes
Trey Johnson 2013 LB 0.9493 No

There’s a bit of subjectivity here, of course, but here are the names that jump out as non-contributors.

Bri’onte Dunn (2012). Dunn had some positive moments on special teams, but only had 48 carries over his Ohio State career (287 yards, 3 TDs). He was likely to have a much more prominent role on the team this year, but he was kicked off the team after allegations of domestic assault.

Se'Von Pittman (2012). Pittman flipped to Ohio State from Michigan State, but things didn’t work out in Columbus. After an injury required him to redshirt, he requested a transfer.

Mike Mitchell (2013). One of the most heralded members of the 2013 recruiting class, Mitchell redshirted, then transferred to Texas Tech, only to then transfer again. His brother, Mickey Mitchell, also transferred from Ohio State’s basketball team. I suspect the Buckeyes won’t recruit any more Mitchell kids.

Evan Lisle (2013). There’s still time for Lisle to find his spot on the offensive line, but he hasn’t found a way to secure meaningful playing time, and it appears that he will be passed on the depth chart by younger players, like true freshman Michael Jordan.

Trey Johnson (2013). Johnson was expected to compete for a starting spot at linebacker, before knee injures forced his retirement.

So that’s five misses, with the jury still potentially out on one of them. But Ohio State recruited 17 players with scores that high over that two year time period. So 70% of those players became contributors for Ohio State. Eight of those players are currently in the NFL, and that number could rise if anybody takes a flier on Baugh, Wilson or Lisle. That’s basically half.

Did every single player on that list reach their full, complete athletic potential? Probably not. Wilson, after all, was one of the more hyped playmakers in the 2013 class, and while he has been an important contributor (and could be again this season), injuries and inconsistencies have kept him from reaching that high ceiling. Noah Spence, of course, was productive while at Ohio State, but failed drug tests forced him to transfer to Eastern Kentucky.

But that list also contains one of the best defensive linemen and running backs in recent Ohio State history, a first round pick at defensive back, and several other excellent college players that were the backbone of a national championship winning team. That’s pretty good!

It’s too early to say what the returns will be like on some of the other classes, since playing time has been hard to come by, but there are reasons to be optimistic. Raekwon McMillan was a star recruit who is likely to be a NFL 1st rounder after this season, and several other high four-stars from the class of 2014 are projected starters for this season, like Curtis Samuel and Jamarco Jones. Ohio State signed eight players with .9400 or higher scores in the class of 2015 that could contribute this season as well.

Right now, the Buckeyes have 12 in the class of 2017, and are likely to finish with even more. Odds are, not every player will stick with Ohio State, thanks to transfers, injuries, off-the-field issues, or just plain ol’ failure to reach their athletic potential. But if the early returns from previous classes are any indication, most of them will at least become solid future contributors, and a good chunk could be playing on Sundays as well.

And that’s a good sign for the future of Ohio State football.

Six Buckeyes were selected in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft and have embarked on their pro careers. How are they doing so far?

The deadline for drafted players with amateur eligibility remaining to sign a pro contract was July 15th, but that date meant little to the six Ohio State players who were selected in 2016. All six had agreed to terms far in advance of that day, and have already gotten their professional careers started.

Ronnie Dawson, who was selected 61st overall by the Houston Astros, agreed to a deal for the slot value of his pick, which was $1,056,800. He was assigned to the Astros short-season Single-A team in the New York Penn League, the Tri-City Valley Cats, and has had his struggles. In 30 games thus far entering the weekend, the All-American selection is slashing just .178/.328/.346, but has shown his power potential with three doubles, five home runs, and 16 RBIs.

Joining Dawson in the draft's first ten rounds was Troy Montgomery, who went in the eighth round to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The 246th pick overall, Montgomery signed for just under slot value of $177,000 at $150,000. With the Orem Owlz of the Pioneer Rookie League, the speedy outfielder had a slash line of .341/.453/.557 in 26 games, with three doubles, two triples, four homers, 17 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases, and earned a promotion to the Class-A Burlington Bees on July 20th.

In the 19th round, Jacob Bosiokovic was selected by the Colorado Rockies with the 560th overall pick, and signed for a $40,000 bonus. Assigned to short-season Class-A ball with the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League, Bosiokovic has equipped himself well in his first 31 pro games, slashing .342/.440/.54 with 11 doubles, four home runs, 18 RBIs, and 11 steals. The power is still there, but so are the strikeouts, as he is averaging nearly 1.3 of those per game.

Left-handed reliever Michael Horejsei was next off the board, going to the Chicago White Sox in the 21st round with the 626th pick. The numbers for his deal have not been reported, though as a senior with no amateur eligibility remaining and little leverage, it was likely below the $100,000 slot value for the pick. Horejsei was assigned to the Great Falls Voyagers of the Pioneer Rookie League, and did not allow a run in his firsteight appearances covering 12.2 innings, holding opponents to a .250 batting average, sporting a 1.11 WHIP and a 5.5-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. That performance earned him a promotion to the Class-A Kannapolis Intimidators on July 20th, where in his first appearance he tossed another 1.1 scoreless innings.

Following Horejsei in 23rd round was 2016 co-captain Nick Sergakis, who was taken with the 700th pick by the New York Mets and received a $5,000 signing bonus. While slashing .245/.336/.357 with five doubles, two home runs, and nine RBIs, Sergakis has already had two personal highlights with the short-season Class-A Brooklyn Cyclones, tying a franchise record with a five hit game on June 17th and being involved in the franchise's first triple play on July 10th.

The last of the six Ohio State players drafted in 2016 was standout starting pitcher Tanner Tully, who was selected in the 26th round by the Cleveland Indians with the 782nd pick and signed for a $100,000 bonus. Pitching for the short-season Class-A Mahoning Valley Scrappers, the lefty has made five bullpen appearances covering 12 innings, and has allowed just a single earned run. That makes for an ERA of 0.75, and with a batting average against of .174 to go along with a 0.83 WHIP, Tully is off to a fast start in his pro career.

The Buckeyes gained their 16th commitment of the class of 2017 today when Amir Riep of Colerain High School (Cincinnati, Ohio) verbally gave his pledge on his birthday. Riep is the third defensive back to commit in this class, and he, Shaun Wade, and Marcus Williamson make up a trio of four-star recruits to join the Buckeyes’ impressive 2017 recruiting class. He’s the third player to commit to the Buckeyes this weekend, joining fellow 2017 classmate Chase Young and future 2018 teammate Brian Snead.

Riep was one of the hottest prospects this spring and summer, accumulating nearly 50 offers due to his relentless camp performances. He vaulted up the recruit boards and currently sits as the #3 prospect in the state of Ohio and #114 in the nation. Riep earned his offer during Junior day at Ohio State this past January, and he immediately placed the Buckeyes at or near the top of his list. Michigan State was long thought to be the second team in the race, and, for a while there, it looked like he might go to the Spartans. Alabama was the third team in the mix, and Riep made a couple of unofficial visits to Tuscaloosa as well.

247 sports listed 27 crystal ball predictions for Riep, and 96% of them said he would end up choosing the Buckeyes. Looks like they were right.

Riep was one of the athletes selected to compete at The Opening, Nike’s big showcase out in Oregon. He spoke to Dave Berk from Scout about his feelings about Ohio State:

“The atmosphere and the feeling I get while I’m there. Coach (Kerry) Coombs being there and developing defensive backs and then putting them to the next level is important.”

Riep roomed with current Buckeye commit Antjuan Simmons while he was in Oregon, and he was surrounded by many other future Buckeyes during that time. That interaction and camaraderie only helped solidify his decision to skip last minute trips to Alabama and Michigan State and to make his final visit to Ohio State for the Friday Night Lights camp yesterday evening.

Riep’s commitment likely puts a bow on the cornerback recruitment, unless Wade or Williamson decides to decommit. Unfortunately, that means Lamont Wade and Darnay Holmes will not be a part of the Buckeye class unless a spot opens in an otherwise packed Ohio State scholarship situation.

Alan Major (former Buckeye Assistant Coach 2004-2010)

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- If Alan Major ever gets the urge to get on a plane and help Ohio State basketball try to seal the deal on Gary Trent Jr. or any other recruit, he can't.

If Major ever wants to get on the floor with Keita Bates-Diop and work on some post moves, he can't do that either. At least not his current role.
but he can do the following
Major can talk basketball with players, spend time with them off the court. He'll be at games, and though he can't coach during the game, he can take notes and help players correct things during the week through film and discussion.
On the recruiting side of things, Major will be heavily involved in on-campus visits and helping put together the program's overall recruiting plan. Matta has had others in that role, using Chris Spartz and Kyle Davis as program's recruiting and operations coordinator in recent years.

Spartz has since left to start his own basketball training business, and Davis was announced as Ohio State's new video coordinator on Wednesday. So now those duties fall mostly under Major, who will still have some help from Davis.

Boom! It’s official. Making the announcement at his high school moments ago, Ohio's top 2017 cornerback is heading to Columbus.

Amir Riep (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) was first offered by Ohio State back in January following his junior day visit on the 31st. Since then, Amir has been a hot commodity that Urban Meyer has wanted to keep at home while other perennial college powers have tried to pry him away. With his decision coming just hours after the highlight of the summer for Buckeye recruiting, Friday Night Lights camp, many had to feel good about Ohio State's chances with Riep.

With just under fifty college scholarship offers, every major college program in the country has seemingly tried to recruit the Ohio prized defensive back. Ranked as the third best prospect in the Buckeye State for 2017 and a top fifteen cornerback in the country, Amir holds a four-star composite status according to 247Sports.

While it could have been anyone's best chance to land Riep in their 2017 class, this summer has been a huge relationship developing season between Ohio State and Riep. It's no surprise that Buckeye cornerbacks coach, Kerry Coombs took this recruitment personally as he was the head man for the Colerain Cardinals for more than a decade before heading to Columbus with Urban Meyer.

With four summer visits to Columbus for Riep, including last night's Friday Night Lights camp at Ohio Stadium, the Buckeyes put themselves into great position for the four-star elite cornerback. Amir's summer was incredibly impressive as he was also an invitee to Oregon for Nike's The Opening. While coaches do the majority of the recruiting, current Buckeye commits were hard at work on Riep as he was constantly seen with 2017 Ohio State pledges in Oregon. All of this and his comfort level with Ohio State seemed to be the difference in why the Buckeyes were the final choice.

Per Land-Grant Holy Land's football analyst Christopher Jason, Riep is listed at 5'11, 185 pounds but plays bigger on film than his listed measurables. Amir displays excellent quickness and instincts, which allows him to stick to a receiver in man coverage. He does a great job of baiting the opposing quarterback into making a bad decision, then uses his ball skills to get his hands off the receiver and onto the ball. Riep os considered a true ball-hawk, as he has the ability to go jump a short route and take it the other way. Not only is the Cincinnati product a ball-hawk, but he is also strong in run support as he has no fear of coming down-hill and making the play.

With help from strength coach, Mickey Marotti, Riep has the skill-set to get on the field earlier than others. Due to a loaded depth chart at cornerback, he will most likely have to redshirt his freshman season before getting on special teams. However, with a redshirt season and the time to develop, Riep has the tools to be a lockdown corner for the Buckeyes in the near future and will fit nicely into Greg Schiano's quarters concept.

Here’s what Riep’s dynamic skill set looks like in action, courtesy of Hudl:

Denzel Ward may have Ohio State’s ‘Fastest Player’ championship belt, but that’s not all Ward can do

Speed, for lack of a better word, is good. Never in the cherished history of football has a player been benched or booed for being too fast. Sure, even the fastest players can mess up big time thanks to limited strength or poor mental awareness of how they need to use their speed, but all else equal: speed is a very good thing to possess on the football field.

There is one particular position on the Ohio State defense where having speed is absolutely vital. Playing cornerback in Ohio State’s press man/quarters scheme consists of playing man-to-man coverage with no safety help over the top for the majority of a game. One wrong step at the line of scrimmage, or a good move by the receiver, can be the difference between an incompletion and a long touchdown...for most cornerbacks. For others? Mistakes are erased instantaneously thanks to a little thing called pure speed.

"Makeup speed is important...When you do what we do, if you make a mistake and you don't have makeup speed, you're in trouble. And he's got it."

-Ohio State Cornerbacks Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Kerry Coombs

Sophomore cornerback Denzel Ward is the fastest player on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ward is also one of the few players under head coach Urban Meyer that managed to not forgo a red-shirt year. Once you see Ward in action, it’s easy to see why Meyer and company felt the need to get Ward on the field as soon as possible.

Typically the goal of a kick-off unit is to pin the return team inside their own 20. For Ohio State’s personal set of piranhas, the goal might as well be the 10 yard line with the kind of speed that is put on the field during kick-offs. Gone are the days of lumbering linebackers and full-backs running down the field on kick-off. It’s now a race to the goal line for only the fastest Silver Bullets, and that’s a race that Denzel Ward made a habit of winning in 2015.

Ward is the heat-seaking missile coming in from the middle of the screen, and he records one of his seven career tackles in quick fashion, limiting the Notre Dame returner to under 10 yards on early kick return. It’s likely that Ward’s speed will once again be on display after every Buckeyes’ score, and it turns out that this ability to be the fastest man on the field comes in handy while playing defense as well.

"We wear those things, those chips in the shoulder pads and we go to the NFL stadiums — he was 21.8 mph for a couple of reps last year....The fastest on the team. So, he can go."

-Ohio State Cornerbacks Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Kerry Coombs

The issue for Ward isn’t his physical makeup, it just may be the solemn reality that everyone except 22 players are going to feel underutilized at a school with as much talent as Ohio State. While Eli Apple has found a new home as the New York Giants’ number one draft pick, returning starting cornerback Gareon Conley returns and is ready to take over as the Buckeyes’ new number one lockdown corner.

As for the number two corner spot? That’s where things are a bit more murky at the moment. Fall practice should produce a clear winner, but for now it appears to be a toss up between Ward and Cleveland Glenville’s own Marshon Lattimore. Ward possesses the speed advantage, but if Lattimore can finally rid himself of what appears to be chronic hamstring problems, the more physical 6’1 195 lb corner could very well win the starting spot across from Conley.

Luckily for Ward, even if he fails to win the starting spot, it’s going to be hard to keep this guy off of the field for too long. While Ward is relatively undersized at 5’11 180 lbs, you would never make the mistake of doubting his willingness to make a big hit.

Ohio State’s new starting running back Mike Weber paid the price after fighting for extra yardage, and while it’s clear that Ward benefits from hitting a running back who has lost most of his forward momentum, it’s still encouraging to see an undersized corner like Ward have this level of willingness when taking a running back to the ground. Ward went on to sack J.T Barrett via a corner blitz on the next play, providing more evidence towards the notion that Ward has the ability to not be physically over-matched on defense.

"Straightline speed, he's as fast as anybody we've had...(Bradley) Roby was the fastest guy we had in the back end and he's close to that."

-Ohio State Cornerbacks Coach and Special Teams Coordinator Kerry Coombs

On a roster full of mysteries, it is comforting to know that Denzel Ward is the type of freaky fast corner that can change a game in an instant. While not necessarily true in real life, in football: if you are going to make a mistake, you should make that mistake at full speed. Hesitation is every football player’s kryptonite, and all the makeup speed in the world won’t be enough to cover up for constant indecision.

That’s what makes Ward such an early bright spot for the 2016 Ohio State Buckeyes. Ward may still be a year away from locking up a full-time starting spot, but when Ward finds his way onto the field, pay attention, because something exciting is about to happen, and it’s going to happen fast.

BOOOOOOM!

One of the best stretches of recruiting in recent modern college football history seemingly keeps getting better.

On the heels of landing the pledge of a four-star mega-defensive end from the Maryland area, Urban Meyer and the Ohio State recruiting think tank went one step further and added a top running back from the 2018 class. In Brian Snead, OSU is getting a four-star high level running back. Checking in as the sixth best running back in his class, the 17th best player from the consensus best state for talent in the country (Florida), and the 80th overall ranked player in the 2018 class, Meyer's Buckeyes are off to a roaring start for next-next year's recruiting class.

Snead reported offers from Michigan, Florida, Ole Miss, and other blue blood programs. He’s also Ohio State’s first commitment in the class of 2018.

To see what Snead will bring to Columbus in 2018, check out his highlights, via Hudl:
