What you need to know about Ohio State's 2016 bye week

The football team gets a midseason break. You deserve one too.

The Ohio State football season will be here before you know it, and even if you’ve only been paying semi-close attention this offseason, you’re probably aware of the major storylines with the program. This is going to be an exceptionally young, but talented and athletic team. There’s a lack of proven production at wideout, running back, and defensive back. They return the best QB in the conference, and should at least compete for a Big Ten title.

But you may not know a lot about the specific teams on Ohio State’s schedule. We’ll get into a lot more detail before the actual games, but you may want a primer so you can sound smart at the bar, or at the barbecue, or in the grocery store checkout line.

So take a look at Ohio State’s opponents this year. Next up, arguably the most welcome (given the grind of the football season) but also the one most prone to leave you feeling disheveled and unsure what to do with yourself: the boredom of the bye week.

Wait so Ohio State has a bye week after just 3 games? Is that ordinary?

An October bye — if your school didn’t play a game somewhere like Ireland or Australia, etc — is customary in terms of earlier weeks off. November feels more regular, at least in terms of what Ohio State faithful are acclimated to.

This year though, after probably the single hardest regular season game of the year, OSU will get a week off to avoid the grind of a gameweek, and accordingly so do you.

Just after football really gets going and I finally sell my roommate(s)/significant other on going all in each and every Saturday?!

It seems cruel yes, but the good news is the rest of the college football playing world rolls on, with or without the Bucks.

Clemson and Georgia Tech play Thursday, Sept. 22 on ESPN in one of the better Thursday night games of the year.

And there are a couple decent national offerings you can probably spend your Saturday enjoying a beverage or three while consuming:

-LSU at Auburn

-Penn State at Michigan

-Stanford at UCLA

-Washington at Arizona

-Wisconsin at Michigan State

At the time of publication, none of those game times or TV networks are set. You can bet LSU/Auburn will be a 3:30 kick at earliest (and more likely a primetime affair). The two Big Ten tilts mentioned seem probably to be afternoon or later action as well and the Pac-12 games always air late. That’s a nice little Saturday of football you don’t have an awful lot of stake in.

No, this is awful. Once that person in my life who doesn’t like me enjoying football finds out Ohio State’s not on, I’m going to have to go like five Lowe’s. Please help me.

You made your own bed there, friend. If your social contract doesn’t permit you to spend your free time doing things you (or hopefully you mutually) enjoy, the level of advice/consultation you necessitate well exceed the limitations of this Ohio State-centric operation.

The good news for you is that there are only 4 Lowe’s in the greater Columbus area. Their hours of operation on Saturdays are either 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. or 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. If you procrastinate your trips as late as humanly possible, there is a non-zero chance the location(s) you visit will be closed.

Godspeed.

I am a happy adult with tons of disposable income, spare time, and no children or an exhausted parent of one or more kids but with a really good babysitter and a desperate need for a lifeline. I would like to do something, anything out of the house that week. I’m begging you.

Good news! Columbus is a low-key pretty good live music city.

While Austin or Nashville it’s not, a fair share of great national acts make their way through town — and OSU’s bye week provides some pretty solid offerings.

Tuesday, Sept. 20, at the EXPRESS Live! formerly known as PromoWest/Lifestyle Pavilion, Beck (of the non-Tim variety) does his thing with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Beck’s last few albums have been fire, so you’d be well served to see him span his vast discography in person.

CD102.5 Fest is Saturday, Sept. 24 starting at 4, also at EXPRESS Live! The headline is CHVRCHES, aka one of the best acts out there right now. If the aforementioned football games aren’t your thing, this is a pretty strong fallback.

While those are the crème de la crème, there are a other shows of note that week as well:

-Ms. Lauryn Hill: Palace Theatre, Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. (FOREWARNING: Hill is notorious for showing up hours and hours late to her own shows, causing them to be abruptly cut short; buyer beware)

-Nada Surf: EXPRESS Live!, Thursday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.

I am aggressively uncultured and refuse to listen to, much less enjoy, live music to the point of self parody. What is there in this for me?

I’ll avoid telling you about Into The Woods at MadLab Sunday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of that week, but if you want to pay $27 ($18 on weekdays!) to escape from zombies with total strangers, “Infected 3” is an option Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

If you love to laugh, the great Jim Gaffigan is doing a two-night stay at Palace Theatre Friday, Sept. 23 and Saturday, Sept. 24.

The Scioto Audubon has a bird watching expo from Sept. 16-Sept. 18 or, if you’d rather eat animals than watch them, there’s a $55 Columbus Taco Truck Food Tour that might be up your alley.

Food? In September? But I’m starving now.

Fine. Be that way.

Sports. You all manipulated me into going to two Ohio State football games the first two weeks of the season and if I don’t get live sports in my life that bye weekend I’m going to turn into a murderous zombie for real.

Slow your roll. The CBJ have a preseason game Sunday, Sept. 25 — YEAH, YEAH; technically not still the bye week -- against the Blues that evening. Columbus Crew SC plays the same Sunday night against New England Revolution. At the time of this publication, the defending MLS Eastern Conference champs are a pipe dream to make the playoffs, but you never know.

What about movies? Do those still exist?

Apparently. “Bridget Jones’s Baby” drops the week prior but the early reviews are not promising (SORRY, FANS OF THE FIRST TWO). The surprise “Blair Witch” reboot will have been out a week as will the in-no-way-politically-contentious “Snowden”, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the titular role.

“The Magnificent Seven” remake and Disney’s “Queen of Katwe” both come out Friday, Sept. 23. Based on the trailers, seems like you could do worse?

You tweet too much about FIFA. I enjoy video games and would like you to beat me at it. Is that possible?

I thought you’d never ask.

FIFA 17 comes out on EA Access that Wednesday night, September 21, at 7 p.m. ET for Access subscribers (~$5 a month or $25 a year) on Xbox One (sorry, PS4 owners). The bad news is you only get 10 hours to try the game before its full release the following Tuesday but hey, that’s an entire college football Saturday, give or take.

Tweet me your XBL username if you decide to take the plunge and I will gladly dunk on you.

All aboard the 5-star train to Columbus, Ohio

It was already supposed to be a big day for Ohio State football recruiting, as the No. 5 wide receiver in the 2017 class, Tyjon Lindsey (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) was scheduled to announce his collegiate decision Monday. What wasn't expected was that the No. 3 WR, Trevon Grimes (Fort Lauderdale, FL / St. Thomas Aquinas) would be announcing with him as a package deal.

×

Grimes was scheduled to announce his decision later in the week, but favored to announce alongside Lindsey in a Hollywood-esque video via Bleacher Report. While the Buckeyes were the favorite to land both, the news was a surprise to the college football recruiting world. The addition of these two elite wideouts only strengthened Urban Meyer and the program's lead as the top-ranked recruiting class in the country for 2017.

While Grimes and Lindsey couldn't be more different, their differences will make for a dangerous WR duo for years to come. Lindsey is known for his speed and agility, while Grimes possesses prototypical WR size and athleticism. The two will join 2016 WR commits Austin Mack and Binjimin Victor.

It must be noted, recent five-star QB commit Tate Martell (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) played a key role in yesterday's news. Martell started heavily recruiting both WRs as soon as he announced his decision earlier in the summer and the three have already built solid relationships with each other.

The Buckeyes' 2017 class is pretty much completed on the offensive side of the ball. The only other candidate remaining would be recent five-star RB Cam Akers (Clinton, MS / Clinton) who is currently an Ohio State lean. If the five-star RB decides to choose Ohio State, this would likely be Meyer's greatest class ever.

Ohio State is makes the cut for an elite DB

Lost in the news yesterday was that the Buckeyes were included as a finalist for four-star DB Christian Tutt (Thomson, GA / Thomson.) The elite defensive back is listed as one of 247Sports top 100 players of the 2018 class and is seen as the No. 14 DB.

Meyer and the Buckeyes will be competing with some of the best schools in the country for Tutt, as USC, Texas A&M, Miami, Georgia, UCLA, Florida State, Notre Dame, Alabama, Florida and Clemson all made the cut alongside the Buckeyes.

Currently, Georgia is the heavy favorite to land the 5-foot-11, 185-pound DB, but the Buckeye coaching staff has been paying more attention to Tutt recently. If Meyer and the rest of the Ohio State coaches decide to further pursue Tutt, expect them to be in it to the end.

Buckeyes first to offer 2019 DB

One thing that makes Urban Meyer one of the best recruiters in college football is his ability to find talented kids early on. He seems to have done just that as the Buckeyes became the first program to officially offer 2019 athlete Jaylin Simpson (Saint Simons Island, GA / Frederica Academy).

Blessed to receive my first offer from THE Ohio State University pic.twitter.com/AOK9hwl0Qq

— Jaylin Simpson (@jaylinsimp) August 22, 2016

Simpson is one of a few prospects to receive an offer from the Buckeyes in the 2019 class. One of the others is his teammate, Jashawn Sheffield. Sheffield is a WR and the Ohio State coaching staff got a chance to see them go up against each other when they went to watch Sheffield.

Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts.com spoke with Simpson about his offer from Ohio State, and the Georgia native said that it was crazy. Expect Simpson to receive offers from many more programs over the next three years but putting in work early should keep the Buckeyes involved for the long haul.

Buckeye rival Michigan loses two commitments

To finish off what was one of the biggest days in Ohio State recruiting, Buckeye Nation had yet another reason to celebrate as arch-rival Michigan lost two of its biggest commitments. Both four-star tight end Leonard Taylor (Springfield, OH / Springfield) and four-star defensive tackle Aubrey Solomon (Leesburg, GA / Lee County) decommitted from the Wolverines program late Monday afternoon.

Taylor, an Ohio native has an offer from the Buckeyes and had received interest from the Buckeyes before his commitment at Michigan's spring game in April. After adding two TEs in 2016, the Buckeyes did not target a TE in the 2017, meaning they will likely heavily target one in 2018. Expect the Buckeye's interest in Taylor to increase again after the recent update.

Solomon also has an offer from the Buckeyes but Ohio State is not seen as a likely candidate for the elite DT. While there is always a possibility of things changing in recruiting, as previously mentioned, the Buckeyes’ 2017 class is nearly full. Solomon will more than likely end up playing in the SEC.

LGHL Kyle Snyder’s gold medal paid off in more ways than one

Kyle Snyder’s gold medal paid off in more ways than one
Meredith Hein
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

593237080.0.jpg

The Ohio State junior is making some solid coin for his trip of a lifetime.

"I tried to push it out of my brain because I’m trying to focus on the wrestling and focus on just competing as hard as I can. But that type of stuff, gold medal, money, accolades, all that stuff pops in my head. But during competition I like to keep it simple and focus on the wrestling."

-Kyle Snyder, via Steve Berkowitz, USA Today

With a win over Azerbaijan’s Khetag Goziumov in the 97-kilogram freestyle wrestling competition on the final day of the Olympic games in Rio, Kyle Snyder is bringing home a lot more than a gold medal in the form of a $250,000 bonus from the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Wrestling. Though most U.S. Olympic athletes earn about $25,000 for a gold, $15,000 for a silver and $10,000 for a bronze, some of the governing bodies of individual sports--including wrestling--have opted to provide additional or increased award amounts as incentives to keep athletes in the game. Also, as many of the athletes receiving medals are still in college, the NCAA has a special rule to allow college athletes to keep cash earned at the Olympics through the Operation Gold program, which totals about $2.1 million for this year’s games for all college athletes, and $1.3 million for U.S. college athletes.

This is not the first time Snyder has benefitted from the rule. Last summer, after winning a world championship in Las Vegas, Snyder earned a $50,000 bonus from USA Wrestling which also fell under the Operation Gold program. Two other U.S. athletes--Helen Maroulis and Missouri’s J’Den Cox--will also receive awards through Operation Gold for earning medals this year.

These bonuses extend well beyond wrestling. Swimmer Katie Ledecky, for instance, will be able to keep the $115,000 in awards for her four gold medals and one silver, in addition to as-of-yet undisclosed earnings from USA Swimming. The NCAA also recently enacted a rule to allow foreign athletes competing in the NCAA to keep earnings from their own respective Olympic committees and governing bodies, which means that Singapore’s Joseph Schooling, who defeated Michael Phelps in the 100-meter butterfly, will be able to keep a $740,000 bonus when he heads back to the University of Texas this year.

"I appreciate my teammates. Y’all pushed me every day to get better. The older guys, I look up to you guys. I came in here with a work ethic and I just want to keep going."

-Keandre Jones, via Urban Meyer

With the start of official practice in Columbus following the conclusion of fall camp, three more Buckeye freshmen lost their black stripes today. Urban Meyer called up linebacker Keandre Jones, cornerback Jordan Fuller and defensive end Joshua Alabi to be recognized in front of the team as full members, having demonstrated the necessary work ethic to have the stripe removed. Freshman running back Demario McCall and defensive end Rashod Berry recently lost their own black stripes on the last day of fall camp Friday. Wide receiver Austin Mack became the first freshman to lose his stripe this year back in March--the only one to do so prior to the start of fall camp. Defensive end Michael Jordan--who is projected to start at left guard this season--earned the honor Aug. 7. In all, 18 freshmen have lost their stripes:

  • WR Austin Mack (March 31)
  • OL Michael Jordan (Aug. 7)
  • CB Damon Arnette (Aug. 13)
  • LB Tuf Borland (Aug. 13)
  • QB Joe Burrow (Aug. 13)
  • DE Jonathon Cooper (Aug. 13)
  • DT Davon Hamilton (Aug. 13)
  • CB Joshua Norwood (Aug. 13)
  • QB Dwayne Haskins (Aug. 17)
  • CB Rodjay Burns (Aug. 17)
  • RB Jordan Leasure (Aug. 18)
  • WR Binjimen Victor (Aug. 18)
  • DL Joe Schroer (Aug. 19)
  • RB Demario McCall (Aug. 20)
  • DE Rashod Berry (Aug. 20)
  • LB Keandre Jones (Aug. 22)
  • CB Jordan Fuller (Aug. 22)
  • DE Joshua Alabi (Aug. 22)
"That reason--the recruiting part--is also why I don’t think the freefall for Ohio State will be as extreme or dramatic as many are expecting. Remember, the Buckeyes have, quite literally, had the best recruiting in the Big Ten every year Meyer has been at the school."

-Aaron Torres, FOX Sports

With the Ohio State Buckeyes ranked No.6 in the preseason AP Poll, they are one of the true contenders for this year’s College Football Playoff, despite a wealth of inexperience and an out of conference schedule that includes travelling to Norman to play No. 3 Oklahoma. Still, the Buckeyes have a fair shot at making the playoff and, ultimately, earning their second national title in three years.

For starters, the Buckeyes are still an extremely talented team. Despite an inordinate amount of players lost to the NFL, Urban Meyer is the best recruiter in the Big Ten and has been able to reload every year. While the incoming players will certainly be inexperienced on the college stage, they will still bring a wealth of needed talent to the team. And while questions abound on the offensive side of the ball in terms of skill position players (with the exception of J.T. Barrett at quarterback), the defense actually returns several of its top performers from last season. Linebacker Raekwon McMillan is one of the top defensive players in the conference and, perhaps, the nation, and defensive endTyquan Lewis actually led the Buckeyes in sacks last season. Combined with experienced backups from last season, including defensive end Sam Hubbard, the Buckeyes should be able to get back to peak performance quickly this year.

Despite the early road game against Oklahoma, Ohio State’s schedule is more manageable than it might seem at first glance. While the Buckeyes will have to face Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan State on the road, Wisconsin and Michigan State are both going through serious rebuilding and Penn State still has some growing to do under James Franklin. And the final game of the season against Michigan--who is ranked just behind the Buckeyes in the AP Poll--is still going to be in Columbus, and will give the young team time to grow before facing off.

Coming off strong Week 1 performances, many Buckeye rookies stayed consistent.

The NFL rookies out of Ohio State are coming off a very strong Week 1 performance in the preseason, with many players already carving out roles and spots in their team’s 53-man roster. Week 2 didn’t have quite as many Kodak moments for the Buckeyes, but for the most part, they’re still contributing consistently to their new squads.

Several teams had joint practices ahead of their Week 2 matchups, including a Buckeye filled Saints-Texans week, that gifted us with a reunion of Ohio State legends.

Cardale Jones

Two weeks in a row, the rookie quarterback was the first player on the field for warm-ups, and it’s this eager attitude that is adding to his value. The Bills already have their No. 1 and 2 guys set, but Jones is still hoping to solidify his spot and work his way up the depth chart. He went 6-of-12 for 83 yards and an interception against the Giants.

Jalin Marshall

The NFL saw a glimpse of the same Jalin Marshall Buckeye Nation saw hightail it to the practice fields to catch punts in the snow just a few years back. The receiver had a big drop across the middle of the field during his Week 2 campaign, and finished the day with four catches for 37 yards. He’s still virtually a lock to make the final roster with his contributions on special teams too vast to overlook.

Braxton Miller

The quarterback turned receiver is still having a go at defenses. He recorded three catches for 34 yards in his team’s win against the Saints, and is considered a strong candidate to be the WR3 just a few weeks ahead of the regular season.

Michael Thomas

Coming off a showstopping performance in Week 1, Thomas is still one of Drew Brees’ new favorite targets, but didn’t put on quite the same show in Week 2. The wideout only hauled in one catch for five yards in his second contest, but still has comfortable spot with the ones.

He may not have had a one-handed grab during the preseason game, but this snag in practice pretty much makes up for it.

Nick Vannett had one catch for 15 yards for the Seahawks against the Vikings, but left the game following a high-ankle sprain.

Offensive line

Taylor Decker

The stock value of the Buckeye is slowly starting to dip, as a decent training camp performance has led up to two preseason games that failed to highlight the tackles talents. He saw 27 snaps in the Week 2 contest, and still lined up with the first team.

Chase Farris

The lineman saw a dramatic increase in snaps from the first preseason game to the second. The Lions’ starter Geoff Schwartz did not play, leading to Farris almost doubling his playing time in Week 2. He is starting to make the most out of these opportunities and could find a spot on the team’s practice squad at the very least.

Joel Hale

The center didn’t have a good week in practice — losing all of his 1-on-1’s -- leading up to the Buccaneers’ Week 2 preseason game, and saw less snaps than he did in his rookie debut. Hale was brought in to add some depth to the line, but could be an easy roster cut for the team as they get closer to the 53-man roster deadline.

Defense

Vonn Bell

The safety had a far better second impression during the preseason, leading the Saints with eight tackles against the Houston Texans — and several former teammates — and even recording a sack. Bell had a lackluster Week 1 performance, but his effort against the Texans more than made up for it.

Darron Lee

The first-pick in the 2016 draft for the Jets saw some playing time with the starters in the Week 2 preseason game against Washington and earned two tackles. Lee saw additional snaps as the coaching staff is trying to get a better idea of the kind of work load the young linebacker could take on this season.

Joshua Perry

With Bosa still holding out, Perry is representing Buckeye Nation in San Diego, and he continued to prove his value to the team in Week 2 against the Cardinals. After Week 1, the rookie noted small nuanced changes to the team’s run defense that needed to be made, and were definitely improved against Arizona. Perry had three tackles in his second taste of NFL action, and continues to contribute on special teams.

Tyvis Powell

The safety is fighting his way onto the Seahawks’ final 53-man roster with his special team abilities. Seattle has been known to keep up to 10 defensive backs and/or safeties, but Powell’s penchant to stand out on special teams is what will nudge him closer to the full-time roster spot. The Buckeye recorded two tackles in his Week 2 performance.

Adolphus Washington

The defensive end has done nothing but increase his value to the Bills defense, and he continued that into Week 2 of the preseason. Following a forced fumble by a teammate, Washington fell on the ball for the turnover. His emergence is perfectly timed with teammate Marcell Dareus — who recently received a four-game suspension — has decided to seek treatment and could miss additional time. Washington gives the team a bit more depth in filling Dareus’ shoes.

Noticeably absent

Eli Apple was sidelined in Week 1 of the preseason with a knee injury against the Dolphins. It wasn’t deemed serious, but despite making the trip to Buffalo with the team, he didn’t see anything playing time in Week 2.

Joey Bosa missed the Chargers second preseason game with no end in sight to the contract negotiations that are keeping the defensive end away from the team. The two sides did take a step in the right direction by communicating with each other again -- after a long bout of silence — with both sides looking for a deal that gets the rookie on the field in 2016.

Ezekiel Elliott has yet to make his rookie debut, having sat out the first two preseason games with a hamstring injury. The team is likely giving Elliott’s legs time to heal completely given the work load they intend to bear him with this season. It’s not worth taking a risk that the running back see the sidelines for an extended period of time.

SPOILER ALERT: It’s good news.

Slow news day, huh?

Things got busy for Ohio State fans in a hurry this morning, when five-star WR Tyjon Lindsey announced his commitment to the Buckeyes, over Nebraska, and a slew of other western powers. But many Buckeye fans weren’t expecting fellow five-star WR Trevon Grimes, who had previously said he’d announce his decision later in the week, to pull the trigger at the same time.

So that gives you a 10-Star Monday. You don’t need to be an ace recruiting reporter to realize that’s a bit of a big deal.

I hopped on Facebook Live shortly after the announcements to give a little more context to what exactly these commitments mean for Ohio State, both on the field in the future, and for the construction of the 2017 recruiting class. I discuss other possible position groups to be targeted this year, when both players might play, who they’re similar to, and more.

Urban Meyer adds two of the country’s most dynamic receivers to his offense.

If there was only one word to describe Tyjon Lindsey, the 5’9, 161 lb receiver out of Bishop Gorman High School (Las Vegas, NV), it would be electric. He’ll operate out of the slot, while Trevon Grimes, the 6’3, 202 lb complete package wideout out of St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) will use his collegiate-ready body on the perimeter as an outside receiver.

Lindsey is the definition of what Urban Meyer looks for with his famed H-Back (Percy Harvin) position. Lindsey has the ability to stop on a dime, change direction and quickly get back up to speed in the blink of an eye. His running style (plus his stature) reminds me of Oregon Duck great, De’Anthony Thomas:

On the other hand, Grimes is your prototypical outside receiver who possesses the size, speed, athleticism and strength to be a legitimate, future NFL prospect. Those attributes make him stand out on film, resembling Ohio State true freshman WR Austin Mack, who looks like he’s going to see early playing time:

When Lindsey gets to Columbus, he will be featured in the H-Back role and most likely as a punt returner. His skillset out of the slot is elite. He has a lightning quick release off the line and is uncoverable on short routes. Lindsey will be perfect on bubble screens, short crossers, slants, 5-yard ins/outs, hitches and the variance of plays that the Buckeyes call out of jet motion. Although his height limits him as a true deep threat, he has burner speed which will allow him to run and out-and-up or a go-route once or twice per game. The quick wideout is already a dangerous route runner and he will only get better once he is a part of Zone 6.

When Lindsey is targeted, he does a great job of plucking the ball out of the air with his soft hands and quickly making his next move. He almost has a sixth sense of knowing where the incoming defender is and is always one step ahead, ready to make him miss. Even on deep balls, despite his height, he has a pretty good vertical and body control to make a play on the ball:

Grimes’ stature makes him a striking figure out wide. He has a deceptively quick first step out of his stance, given his size, which allows him to get on top of the toes of the opposing cornerback. His route running is smooth and precise, for what he is asked to run at St. Thomas Aquinas. Being bigger than every corner he faces in high school, he’s asked to run fades, verticals, deep ins and posts to use his speed and power to separate and allow him to be at maximum speed when catching the football. He is sometimes asked to run screens and slants, but he is mostly targeted 10-plus yards downfield.

When Grimes is targeted on a throw, he uses his body extremely well to box out the defender and go up and get the ball. He has great body control on fades and underthrown passes, and typically comes down with the football. He was underthrown a decent amount last season, which showed off his elite catch radius. Grimes possesses big, soft hands which stand out when he’s plucking the ball out of the air.

When the ball is in Lindsey’s hands, it’s showtime. His mix of balance and quickness allows him to stop-and-go on cuts and leave the would-be tacklers in the dust. Lindsey is one of the few players in the nation who can successfully pull off the Reggie Bush back juke on the regular, before quickly accelerating up-field. Even with shorter legs than your average wideout, he still has elite speed and has the potential to take a shallow crosser to the house.

Even though Grimes is supremely athletic, he’s a much different player after the catch than Lindsey. Grimes won’t be able to take a shallow crosser 70-yards at Ohio State, but he can run a post pattern, stiff arm the corner and go the distance. He’s also not afraid to go across the middle and catch the ball in traffic. Grimes shows extreme toughness after the catch, similar to Michael Thomas.

The only real negative from Lindsey’s game is his size and his blocking ability. He does show effort as a downfield blocker and typically finds a way to get in the way or shadow the defender, but his blocking (most likely due to his size) does not stand out. Blocking is important for receivers at Ohio State, but the staff does find ways to get smaller guys, such as Dontre Wilson, Braxton Miller or Jalin Marshall to get defenders out of the play design. Whether it is by motioning them across in jet motion or having them run a route the opposite way, it should not be a problem for Lindsey and the staff.

As for Grimes, in order to get a little quicker and better for the quick-strike Ohio State offense, his high school should use him more in the short to intermediate game. Yes, the Buckeyes take chances deep, but even with a possession WR like Thomas, he was primarily used as an intermediate receiver. Grimes has a similar build to Thomas and the former Buckeye was known as one of the best slant route runners in the country. If Grimes can add that to his repertoire, watch out.

Overall, Tyjon Lindsey is one of, if not the most dynamic player to sign with the Buckeyes under Urban Meyer. Trevon Grimes brings physicality and toughness to the receiver position that they definitely need. The two receivers compliment each other extremely well; as Lindsey can break the defender’s ankles on a stop-and-go, while Grimes can go up and catch a fade ball on the goal line. The coaching staff will find a way to get both on the field as true freshmen and as Terrell Owens once said, “get your popcorn ready.”
