“ Hell, there are no rules here – we’re trying to accomplish something…” ~ Thomas Edison
Leave it to Thomas Edison, an Ohioan and considered “The Father Of Invention”, to appropriately summarize the goals for the 2016 Ohio State football team. No rules – just accomplish something.
“Something” is a pretty vague and open concept. Considering how much talent Ohio State lost to graduation and the NFL Draft, considering how I have written throughout spring practice about how 44 players on Ohio State’s roster are either redshirt freshmen or true freshmen…Damn right, Mr. Edison. There are no rules. Ohio State fans are just looking to see what this team can accomplish against a much tougher schedule in 2016 than 2015, with tremendously talented, yet inexperienced, players.
**
Oklahoma Sooners (Game 3)
2016 OSU Opponent Ranking: 1 out of 12
Players Recruited By Ohio State: OT Orlando Brown Jr, LB Ricky DeBerry, RB Joe Mixon, DT Courtney Garnett. To the best of my knowledge, as I review Oklahoma’s roster, I do not believe Ohio State recruited any of the various Ohioans on Oklahoma’s roster. I am more than willing to bet I may have inadvertently missed on some players; please let me know and I am happy to correct my error(s).
Game Date:
September 17, 2016
Kickoff Time: 7:30pm EST, telecast on Fox Sports
Location: Memorial Stadium
Rationale For The Ranking:
And then there was one. Out of Ohio State’s twelve scheduled opponents for the 2016 season, which team do I believe is the most difficult?
Just as in all walks of life, timing is everything. Ohio State will be coming off two home games versus Bowling Green and Tulsa, before making the trek to Norman, Oklahoma. Oklahoma will play against Houston in a neutral site season opener (call me skeptical about that, as NRG Stadium is in Houston, Texas…), and a home game versus UL Monroe.
The big difference here? How young Ohio State’s roster is in comparison to Oklahoma’s roster. Will the young Buckeyes be ready for what is going to be a sellout crowd in Memorial Stadium at night?

#OU announced that its Sept. 17 home game against #OhioState is sold out.

— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) July 22, 2016
Prediction: One of the best advantages Ohio State has going into this game is the fact that Houston, led by former Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman, is facing Oklahoma two weeks prior to this game. Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer will be able to watch intently as to what worked, and did not work, against the Sooners. Consequently, Oklahoma Head Coach Bob Stoops is also going to be able to take advantage of this with his squad, being able to prepare the Sooners for whatever offensive wrinkles Ohio State tries to throw at them. It should be a great one to start off the college football season, with two potential College Football Playoff participants.

Bob Stoops at ESPN Car Wash said Oklahoma is happy to be playing Houston early to give them an idea of what Ohio State will do.

Are the Buckeyes on boom watch?

Is Ohio State close to adding another verbal pledge? Per multiple reports, a key class of 2018 OSU target is set to announce his college commitment relevantly soon.

A week after once again making the trek from Georgia to Columbus, Ohio to spend time with the Buckeye coaching staff, four-star quarterback Emory Jones (Franklin,GA/Heard County) will reportedly put all the rumors to rest and verbally commit to a college as soon as today.

Thought as an OSU ever lean since receiving his offer from the Buckeyes staff in May, programs such as Tennessee have made Jones’ recruitment interesting. The Vols were looked as major players for the 6’2, 195-pound signal caller, but since offering another prized junior quarterback on Thursday, all signs point towards Emory taking his talents to the 614.

Earning nearly 20 offers, Jones is considered one of the top junior recruits in the country. According to the 247Sports Composite, he is currently considered the third dual-threat quarterback, and 34th overall prospect in the class of 2018.

Will Jones become the second member of the Buckeyes class of 2018 or will end up elsewhere? We won’t have to wait much longer to find out. Stay with Land-Grant Holy Land for the latest.

Eskridge commits

After switching up a top three of Ohio State, Alabama, and Miami, and adding the Florida Gators, and Oregon Ducks to his list earlier this week, four-star prospect Jermaine Eskridge (Tampa,FL/Jefferson), a former Kentucky pledge, announced where he plans to play his college ball on Thursday afternoon, but it wasn’t to one of his aforementioned leaders.

While on the campus of the University of South Florida, the 6’3, 185-pound junior announced he will still close to home and line up for the Bulls on the next level. On a roll, Eskridge’s commitment comes just a day after USF landed former 2017 Ohio State commit Bruce Judson (Cocoa,FL/Cocoa).

— EJ2 (@Iam_Jermaine4) July 28, 2016

Sitting out most of his sophomore season at Jefferson High due to transfer rules, Eskridge has still received over 45 scholarship offers from schools across the country. With talent to play on either side of the ball, Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame and Oklahoma are just a few of the many other programs to reportedly pursue him during his recruitment.

Quick Hits

  • Thad Matta, and the Ohio State basketball program are one step closer to adding one of the top small forwards in the class of 2017. On Thursday, five-star standout Troy Brown Jr. (Las Vegas,NV/Centennial) announced via his Twitter page that he is down to eight programs. Ohio State, Oregon, Alabama, UNLV, Kansas, Arizona, California, and Georgetown find themselves still in the mix for the 6’6, 215-pounder.
  • Five programs will fight it out for 2017 defensive tackle Donovan Jeter’s (Beaver Falls,PA/Beaver Falls Area) commitment. Either Ohio State, Alabama, Pittsburgh, Penn State, or Tennessee will end up with the 6’4 265-pound lineman on their roster. At the moment most around the recruiting scene believe Jeter will end up staying close to his Pennsylvania stomping grounds, and playing for Pitt or PSU.

LGHL Before Chris Ash took the Rutgers job, Urban Meyer gave him some advice

Before Chris Ash took the Rutgers job, Urban Meyer gave him some advice
Brett Ludwiczak
via our friends at Land-Grant Holy Land

usa-today-9271459.0.jpg

So far the former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator has done a good job at following the words of wisdom from his old boss.

"My advice is don't be jumpy. You get one shot and if you fail you are probably done. Chris wanted to be a head coach. Chris came to Ohio State for that reason. He wanted to compete for a championship and be a head coach."

- Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer on his advice to Chris Ash via Ryan Dunleavy, NJ.com

When former Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash was interviewing with Syracuse and Rutgers in December for their head coaching positions, he came to his boss at the time for a little advice. Since Urban Meyer has plenty of branches on his coaching tree, he's pretty familiar with watching his assistants leave to realize their head coaching dreams. While not every assistant of Meyer's who takes on a head coaching job finds success, more often than not they do. Meyer told Ash to not jump at the first head coaching offer that came his way, since if he failed at his first head coaching job he might not get another crack at it.

Another piece of advice that Meyer gave to Ash was to make sure you are able to recruit. So far Ash has done a good job in following that piece of advice from Meyer, as he has already put together a strong 2017 recruiting class, keeping a lot of talented players from New Jersey in-state. To try and help a program which hasn't had a lot of success, Ash is bringing to Rutgers a lot of the ideas he learned from Meyer during his time in Columbus. Some have even jokingly referred to Rutgers as "Ohio State East". Now Meyer just has to hope that all his teachings don't result in Ash leading his new team to a win over the Buckeyes anytime soon.

"With a guy like Mike, who's such a critical guy, I'm very close with him. That's a Cadillac position in sports, one of them, is to be the starting tailback at Ohio State. And my name's going to be on that, so I do spend a lot of time with him."

- Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer on running back Mike Weber via Ari Wasserman, Cleveland.com

After Ezekiel Elliott declared for the NFL Draft following Ohio State's loss to Michigan State last year, it was pretty well known that running back Mike Weber was going to have a big role in the 2016 Ohio State offense. That role got even bigger last week after Ohio State dismissed Bri'onte Dunn from the team. Even if Dunn had still been on the team, it was likely Weber would be starting at running back when the Buckeyes took on Bowling Green in the season opener. After Weber got to watch and learn from Elliott last season, as he was redshirted, now the spotlight will be on Weber to try and emulate what Ohio State fans saw from Elliott the last few seasons.

It hasn't been easy so far for Weber at Ohio State, and Meyer even poked fun at his running back's weight when he came to Columbus during Big Ten media days earlier this week. Meyer better get all the jokes in while he can, since Weber is now chiseled after working with Ohio State strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti. Even though Weber will get the lion's share of the carries this year, Meyer still needs his other running backs to step up to fill the hole left by Dunn. Curtis Samuel, Dontre Wilson, and Antonio Williams are all names to keep an eye on this year in the running game. Samuel and Wilson could give the Buckeyes could nicely compliment Weber with their big-play ability on the field. If Weber is able to live up to expectations he could be the next great Ohio State running back, following in the recent footsteps of Carlos Hyde and Elliott.

"You can see why we were excited to come here. On a Wednesday, I don't think you could ask for anything more. It's an historic night in Columbus. Great atmosphere, two great teams. I wouldn't see why we wouldn't talk about coming to Columbus in the future."

- ICC vice president Kwame Bryan via Tom Reed, The Columbus Dispatch

Last night at Ohio Stadium there was a different kind of football on display, as European soccer powerhouses Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain squared off in the International Champions Cup. When tickets went on sale in the spring many were hoping to catch a glimpse of Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo and PSG's Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but that wasn't the case last night. Ronaldo was injured in the 2016 Euro Final earlier this month, while Ibrahimovic moved to Manchester United. PSG jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 40 minutes before Real Madrid was able to pull a goal back before half.

Fans came from near and far to fill The Horseshoe, with attendance announced at 86,641. The previous attendance record for a soccer game in Columbus came back in 1996, when 31,550 came to Ohio Stadium for a match during the Columbus Crew's inaugural season. The strong attendance showing last night could mean more international soccer matches making their way to Columbus in the future.

MotS&G The Dream 17: Urban Meyer’s Stranglehold on the Recruiting Game

The Dream 17: Urban Meyer’s Stranglehold on the Recruiting Game
Richard Tongohan
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

Here is my first installment of The Dream 17: Urban Meyer’s Stranglehold on the Recruiting Game. I will be giving you a brief summary of four (04) committed recruits over the next couple of weeks and after all are mentioned, I will go over the remaining needs for the staff and the remaining targets, then I will eventually branch off into the 2018 Class. Enjoy!

Meyer-Ohio-State-300x168.jpg

Coach Urban Meyer’s and his Ohio State Buckeyes are a team that is transitioning away from a team that has had tremendous success on the gridiron, winning 50 games against 4 losses. Coach Meyer’s success shouldn’t be measured by wins and losses, but the overall health of his football team. Success in the classroom, success on the field and most importantly, success on the recruiting trail. As of late, Urban and company have been winning at every level, and they have been winning BIG. Take a long, hard look at the current recruiting class, the class of 2017. He is lighting it up and he is clearly getting commitments from just about anyone that he wants, commits from anyone who he envisions having the Buckeye spirit. Potential prospects who demonstrate traits of the Buckeye Culture and who are willing to live the lifestyle that Coach Meyer and company want their players adopt is one reason why this class is so unique and loaded with star power at just about every tier on both offense and on defense.

JOSH-MYERS-300x158.png
JOSH MYERS:

Josh Myers out of Miamisburg, OH stands at an astonishing 6-6 and 306 pounds and looks to be a key piece on the Offensive Line. He was one of the first members of the lauded 2017 Class and he is solid on his commitment. Myers will be trouble for opposing linemen when his time comes at Ohio State. He shows the instincts that Offensive Tackles should have and the drive to finish plays until the whistle blows. He displays the tenacity and a nasty streak to finish off rushers and he has the ability to pull left or right. He will be quite the player once he figures it out, but until he proves himself to the coaches, he looks to add depth to bolster the Tackle ranks.

wyatt-davis-300x154.png
WYATT DAVIS:

Wyatt Davis out of Bellflower, CA was a surprise commitment that the Buckeyes managed to secure even though they started recruiting him during the latter stages of the recruiting game. Meyer secured his commitment after a month and he looks to be another firm Buckeye pledge. Davis plays Offensive Guard and he stands at 6-5, 310 pounds and looks solid on film. He showed people at the opening that he will be a solid contributor and eventual starter on the Buckeyes Offensive Line once he gets an opportunity. He flashes quick, fluid hip movement and he flat out destroys defenders who dare to come his way. He will be something special and the Buckeyes line looks to be building something special.

shaun-wade.jpg
SHAUN WADE:

Shaun Wade committed to Ohio State during their CFB Playoff run to the top. He plays Cornerback out of Jacksonille, FL and stands at 6-1, 177. He has that Florida speed that Urban covets and the skillset to lock down opposing Wide Receivers consistently. He has the instincts and the ability to lockdown one side of the field and could be used at any corner spot. There has been a ton of negativity surrounding Wade and his potential to flip to another school. We would never know and until it is actually made official (Insert Carlton Davis situation), he is a Buckeye commit until then. He has the tools to surpass the upperclassmen above him with numerous injuries and inexperience. He has a shot at starting if he stays and puts in the work.

chase-young.png
CHASE YOUNG:

Chase Young committed at the well-known Friday Night Lights Camp, that the Buckeye staff puts out annually to attract top tier talent to get them to compete and learn the Buckeye way. It worked with Young, who many thought had been leaning toward the hometown Terrapin team. Luckily for Coach Johnson and Coach Meyer, they secured his commitment and stole him away like Dwayne Haskins and Keandre Jones from last years class. Young is projected to become a Weakside Defensive End and he is 6-5, 225. He has the speed, the techniques and the drive to succeed at a higher level and that is why he was a top priority for the Buckeye staff. Another fine piece to pair alongside other commits along the Defensive Line.

Dienhart: Welcome to the ‘Year of the Linebacker’ in the Big Ten
Tom Dienhart, BTN.com Senior Writer via Big Ten Network

If you like linebackers, you’ll love the Big Ten. It’s loaded with them. There’s Iowa’s Josey Jewell, Penn State’s Brandon Bell, Wisconsin’s Vince Biegel, Michigan State’s Riley Bullough, Purdue’s Ja’Whaun Bentley and Nebraska’s Josh Banderas. I could go on, and I think I will. There also is Minnesota’s Jack Lynn, Maryland’s Jermaine Carter, Indiana’s Marcus Oliver and Northwestern’s Anthony Walker. And don’t forget about Ohio State’s Raekwon McMillan, who will give Walker a run for his money as the Big Ten’s primo linebacker. If not Walker or McMillan, how about Michigan’s Jabrill Peppers, who is a newbie to the position.

Buckeyes looking for some defensive star power in the 2018 class

OSU after Cook

This past week, the Buckeyes 2018 recruiting class officially got rolling when 2018 running back Brian Snead, a five-star prospect from Armwood (FL), decided to commit to Head Coach Urban Meyer and Ohio State at the annual Friday Night Lights event.

On Wednesday, the Buckeyes also had next years recruiting class in mind as they dropped an offer to 2018 cornerback Anthony Cook (Houston, TX / Lamar). The 6’1, 168-pounder has a bevy of offers already under his belt. Ohio State is now one of the 24 programs to give an offer to the Houston native including Alabama, Baylor, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Michigan State and many more.

Extremely Blessed and Excited to receive an offer from The Ohio State University !!! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/sZ6lfWXIwN

— Anthony Cook (@_ACook21) July 27, 2016

Cook is currently pegged as a four-star prospect in next years class but he is this close to five-star status. The Lone Star State standout is also slotted as the 43rd best player in his class, the fifth overall cornerback, and the sixth highest graded player from the state of Texas.

Pledger talks FNL

One prospect that was in attendance for Friday Night Lights last week was 2018 RB T.J. Pledger (West Hills, CA / Chaminade). On Wednesday, the 5’9, 188-pounder caught up with 247Sports’ Bill Kurelic and told him he “had a good time” at the event. Pledger also raved to Kurelic about the atmosphere at Ohio Stadium and being able to work with the Buckeye coaches. Pledger unsurprisingly singled out running backs coach Tony Alford as one coach he specifically enjoyed working with.

Perhaps the biggest news from the interview with Kurelic was when Pledger stated that he will get back to Columbus for a game and that he is “most definitely” interested in Ohio State. As we mentioned above, the Buckeyes already have a commitment from Snead for 2018 but it is super likely that Ohio State takes two backs in next years class. Could this be the tandem? We will have to wait and see.

One time commit picks USF

Not too long ago, Ohio State had a verbal commitment from 2017 athlete Bruce Judson (Cocoa, FL / Cocoa). The four-star prospect was technically a member of the Buckeyes class for 10 months before what seemed to be a mutual parting between the two parties.

On Wednesday, the one time Buckeye commit announced that he was keeping his skill set in the Sunshine State and would be playing his collegiate career for Head Coach Willie Taggart and South Florida.

Judson is the 275th best player in this years class, according to the 247Sports Composite Scale. He also stands as the 14th highest rated ATH in the entire country and the 41st best player from the always talented state of Florida.

Definitely an underrated but tremendous pickup for the Bulls.
