Welcome to a new (hopefully) daily feature at The Buckeye Battle Cry called Heard Around the ‘Shoe. This daily dose will take a look at all things recruiting in regards to Ohio State football. Each day I will scour the internet looking for anything interesting pertaining to the Buckeyes recruiting efforts. So let’s get started shall we?
Updated Recruiting Rankings by Service:
Before we delve into the goings on with Ohio State recruiting lets take a real quick look at where things stand with the 2017 class.
ESPN – ESPN has the Buckeyes #1, Michigan #7, Iowa #16, Maryland #20, Rutgers #21, Northwestern #23, Michigan State #24
Scout – Scout has the Buckeyes #1, Michigan #7, Michigan State #14, Maryland #17, Penn State #21, Rutgers #22, Northwestern #23, Iowa #24
Rivals – Rivals has the Buckeyes #2, Michigan #5, Rutgers #16, Maryland #17, Iowa #19, Michigan State #20, Northwestern #23
247 – 247 has the Buckeyes #1, Michigan #7, Maryland #16, Iowa #18, Rutgers #21, Penn State #23, Michigan State #24
The Big Ten is holding its own in most of these recruiting services placing as many as 7 teams in the top 25 of the recruiting rankings. Last year the SEC dominated the recruiting rankings, and this year the Big Ten seems to be stepping up its game. The addition of Chris Ash at Rutgers and DJ Durkin at Maryland have sure shown some early dividends, as both schools find themselves among the surprise teams in the top 25. The Buckeyes will look to continue their stronghold on their top spot with the hopeful additions of a couple of elite wide receivers at the end of the month.
Early Buckeye Targets on ESPN 300:
Last week ESPN released their top 300 prospects in the class of 2018, and the Buckeyes have quite a few targets on this list. In-state guys like Jackson Carman (#7), Jaelen Gill (#34), current Michigan verbal Leonard Taylor (#45), L’Christian Smith (#102), Alex Reigelsperger (#156), Dallas Gant (#173), another Michigan verbal in Antwuan Johnson (#204), Malik Vann (#214), Blaine Scott (#225), Michael Dowell (#231), Trenton Gillison (#236), Christopher Oats (#252), Daniel Bolden (#265), and Joseph Scales (#297). Not all of these guys have offers yet, but I would imagine that the majority will receive one as the 2017 recruiting class wraps up.
Other Buckeye Targets out-of-state:
#1 – Xavier Thomas – DE – Florence, SC
#4 – Jalen Hall – WR – Los Angeles, CA
#6 – Teradja Mitchell – Virginia Beach, VA
#9 – Zamir White – RB – Laurinburg, NC
#11 – Matthew Jones – DT – Brooklyn, NY
#13 – Taron Vincent – DT – Bradenton, FL
#21 – Jaiden Woodbey – DB – Bellflower, CA
#23 – Nick Petit-Frere – OT – Tampa, FL
#25 – Brian Hightower – WR – Bradenton, FL
These are just a few of the guys that the Buckeyes have given out offers to so far for the 2018 class, however there are many more out of state guys who have offers that reside inside the top 300 of the ESPN rankings. 2018 looks to be no different in how the Buckeyes will do in recruiting as they already have commitments from the #37 and #95 players in the ESPN rankings in Emory Jones and Brian Snead. Expect the Buckeyes to snag quite a few more of these top recruits from Ohio as well as across the nation.
Ohio State visitor over the weekend:
Ohio State hosted the number one prospect in the state of New Jersey over the weekend in
Tyler Friday. Friday is a member of the Don Bosco Prep football team, and right now holds a 100% crystal ball projection albeit with only 1 projection to the Michigan Wolverines which have been recruiting New Jersey hard since Jim Harbaugh arrived. Friday seemed to enjoy his visit to Ohio State, as he took to twitter to show his appreciation for the visit.
Friday currently holds 11 offers, from Michigan, Alabama, Rutgers and Penn State among others. He is currently ranked as the 47th best prospect in the class of 2018, and the number five defensive tackle in the 247 rankings.
2019 Offer Out:
While the Buckeyes have been busy trying to finalize the 2017 class, and get a head start on the 2018 class, the 2019 class is already starting to receive offers as well. The latest to receive a Buckeye offer is
Dominick Blaylock, a highly offered athlete from the state of Georgia. Blaylock already has 22 offers to his name as he enters his sophomore season at Walton HS in Marietta, Georgia. His offers are from perennial powers Alabama, Oklahoma, Florida, Florida State and Michigan among others.
While it is likely that this recruitment will take quite a long time, the Buckeyes have been doing a great job of recruiting the state of Georgia under Urban Meyer. They have signed stars like Raekwon McMillan, Joshua Norwood and Stephen Collier, and adding Emory Jones to the mix for the 2018 class. Expect the Buckeyes to try and make an early impression on what is sure to be one of Georgia’s top athletes for the class of 2019.
Some Non Ohio State News:
We all know that these high school kids like to have big announcements and pledge their allegiance to the college of their choice. Some do the hat dance, some make videos, others have more elaborate ways of telling America where they will be attending college, and some just like to sit in their high school gym and gather the media around and make a good old fashioned announcement.
Todd Harris a top 100 player in the class of 2017 gathered the media, friends and family around to make what was supposed to be his college announcement. He baffled everyone in attendance.
My mind is blown. Todd Harris didn't put on any three hats. Put on a Plaquemine hat and revealed a Plaquemine jersey. He's committed to HS.

So a recruit announced a commitment “date” – has media show up – announces his commitment..to his high school. Wow.

What looked to be a commitment to LSU, Alabama or Ole Miss turned into a kid committing to his high school. These kids know that they hold all the cards when it comes to the recruiting game, and Todd Harris simply played the media into his little game. It will be interesting to see how he decides to formally announce where he is going to college when that time comes and if the media decide to give him the time of day when it happens.
