A fumble on the one yard line led to a memorable night in Madison.

Fumbles at the one by your running back: the most heartbreaking and gut-wrenching play in sports. With passing, a majority of the outcomes are negative; you could either have the pass fall incomplete or picked off, compared to the lone positive of having the pass completed.

Penalty kicks in soccer are just plain weird when you think about it – and they are basically a glorified guessing game. Blown saves in the bottom of the ninth are up there, but those situations normally have a tell-tell sign that everything is about to hit the fan.

Losing the ball at the one is one of those moments that gets burned into a fanbase’s memory. Earnest Byner lost the ball at the one during the 1987 AFC Championship Game, and that was consequently the x-factor that gifted the Denver Broncos a trip to the Super Bowl.

Fumbling at the one burns worse, not because of the event itself, but because it happens to the guy that you don’t expect to make the mistake.

This brings us to the next installment of ‘Meyer Moments’. The fumble by Wisconsin’s Montee Ball in 2012 at the 1-yard line was devastating for more reasons than one. Ball had a chance to snap the NCAA record for most career touchdowns while simultaneously squaring the game at 14-14.

Camp Randall Stadium in Madison, Wisc. has never been a kind place for the Buckeyes. But on Nov. 17, 2012, the Scarlet and Gray escaped with a win in an instant classic with the Badgers.

How’d we get here?

Ohio State rolled into Madison with a 10-0 record and a rejuvenated team after a bye week. Also, the Buckeyes claimed a share of the Big Ten Leaders crown entering their contest with the Badgers. A win against Wisconsin would’ve given OSU an outright division title, but it wouldn’t mean much, as the Buckeyes were out of any postseason play.

Almost a month after the Kenny Guiton comeback win against Purdue, the Buckeyes won two more game before their highly anticipated trip to Camp Randall. In those two games post-Guiton, Braxton Miller, back from injury, ignited a Buckeye second half surge against Penn State en route to a 35-23 win on the road; then Miler led the Scarlet and Gray in a blowout of Illinois, 52-22, to claim the Illibuck Trophy once again.

For Wisconsin, their season seemed to be destined for the Big Ten championship. With Ohio State out of postseason with Penn State, the Badgers were in the driver seat to be the Legends representative. Sitting at a 7-3 overall record and a 4-2 record within the conference, Bret Bielema, now in his seventh year at the helm of the program, had found a way to keep the Badgers’ hopes alive for another Rose Bowl appearance.

A win against Ohio State would be the icing on the cake for Wisconsin, as the Badgers already secured their reservation to the Big Ten Championship Game by defeating Indiana the week before. If a win against the Buckeyes was icing, then the cherry on top would’ve been the fact that Bielema was undefeated on Senior Day (6-0).

An early lead

Set for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff, this game was primed to end under the stadium lights. The weather would slowly get colder as the sun went to rest in the West, and the wind would be just a little bit nippier – both perfect conditions for November football.

Once the Wisconsin band high-stepped onto the field and finished their pre-game show, football was almost upon us. With the Buckeyes winning the coin toss and deferring, the Badgers got the ball first.

Cover Boy for a Record Day?: Ball graced the cover of the Wisconsin-Ohio State program, just a touchdown away from tying the record

The home team didn’t do much with the first possession, as two incompletions by Curt Phillips and a 6-yard rush by Montee Ball capped off an unfulfilling drive. The first Ohio State drive went a little better than Wisconsin’s. Using nine plays to march 48 yards, the Buckeyes were on the fringe of field goal range before putting the ball away. While the Scarlet and Gray didn’t get any points, downing their opening punt on the Wisconsin 1-yard was a fairly good consolation prize.

Both teams would take their second drive into enemy territory, but like the first, failed to get any points to materialize. After Wisconsin’s third drive stalled on their own 25, it was time to punt the ball again.

That turned out to be a bad thing for Wisconsin.

Corey Brown fielded the ball at the OSU 32, weaved around some defenders, and turned on the afterburners to the endzone. Just like that, the Buckeyes jumped up to a 7-0 lead – which would be the only score in the first quarter.

The second quarter didn’t start any better for the Badgers. After another drive that failed to materialize any points, the Badger defense came back on the field to stop the Buckeye offense which had begun to pick up steam. Miller had found his groove, and played a huge role on seven of the eight plays on Ohio State’s first series of the second quarter. The eighth play of the drive featured standout running back Carlos Hyde punching the ball into the endzone from 15 yards out.

Boom!

The Scarlet and Gray pulled away 14-0 early in the second quarter. However, there was some bad news: that would be the last points the Buckeyes would score in regulation.

The lead up

Following the Buckeyes’ second score of the afternoon, it was now or never time for the home team Badgers. Failing to cut the deficit would give Ohio State breathing room. Something we’ve seen in the Urban Meyer era: giving Ohio State any room to breath ends with the Buckeyes winning convincingly.

With Montee Ball in the back field, and a short distance away from tying the NCAA career touchdown milestone of 78, it was his time to shine. As soon as the Badgers got the ball back, Ball was going to be the workhorse. The first four plays of the drive featured Montee carrying the ball, and picking up a modest chunk of yardage.

Phillips tossed the ball to get the Badgers deep inside Ohio State territory, and then Montee punched his ticket to tie history from seven yards out.

At halftime, the Buckeyes 14-7 lead seemed as though it wouldn’t stand for long (spoiler note: it didn’t). Ball had been given the rock 18 times in the half, and reigned supreme with 112 yards. Getting roughly 6.2 yards per pop was exactly what the Badgers wanted – their star running back powering through a Buckeye rush defense that entered the game ranked No. 16 in the country, and only giving up about 108 yards per game.

Miller was 8-of-12 and passed for 78 yards. Throw in his 36 yards on the ground, and he’s responsible for over 3⁄4 of the Buckeyes first half yards.

However, the third quarter saw both stars get shut down. Only four drives took place in the third, which meant that it was run game central for 15 minutes. The Badgers ran the ball 14 times; the Buckeyes seven times. Neither could do much against the other’s defense.

To compound even more Badger problems, they couldn’t capitalize on opportunities. A missed field goal at the start of the fourth kept the Buckeyes up a touchdown. As time trickled off the clock, Ohio State’s goal was to just hang on. With seven minutes left in regulation and history in plain sight for Ball, the Badgers had to move down the field for the game tying score. Like their previous scoring drive, this series featured a Ball-heavy rushing attack.

The fumble

As the Badgers moved across midfield, then into the Buckeye redzone, and then onto the two, it seemed as if Ball was going to break the career rushing touchdown held by Travis Prentice. Poetic justice it could’ve been: a Miami (OH) player having his record broken by a Badger playing against an Ohio team. All that separated Ball from this record was a 4th-and-1 on the two.

On short yardage situations, Ball tends to leap forward; on goal line situations he has a tendency to reach the ball out on the leap, making himself prone to fumbles while trying to get the touchdown.

Ryan Shazier of the Buckeyes knew what Ball was going to do, and set out to stop him.

ryan-shazier-saves-the-wisconsin-game.gif

So close, yet so far away.

History for Ball wouldn’t be broken on this day. But, the game was about to get even more interesting.

As Ohio State’s motive in the final 2:46 was to drain the clock, the Wisconsin defense forced a three-and-out, and salvaged a last ditch effort to tie the game. Not surprising, Ball played a minor role in the Badgers last drive. With the starting position at the Ohio State 41, Phillips took to the air to gain ground quickly. It took four completed pass plays to get there, but the Wiscy comeback was imminent.

With eight seconds left, Phillips hit Jared Abbrederis from five yards out for the game tying score.

Off to overtime at 14-14.

Between the Ball fumble and the Phillips TD in the final four minutes of the game, this is the most compelling of the ‘Meyer Moments’ from his first year. Unlike the milestone wins against Miami (OH) and Michigan State, and the comeback win against Purdue, the contest against Wisconsin didn’t have the Buckeyes in control of the game in the waning moments. This was uncharted territory for Ohio State: a close game, but they managed to pass up the lead with seconds to play rather than taking the lead.

Wisconsin was no Purdue. However, the way both games ended were identical. In overtime, the Buckeyes marched into the endzone – four rush plays between Hyde and Miller was all it took. On the rebuttal drive by the Badgers, Ball opened up with a six yard rush, but the rest of the offense went stagnant fast. An incomplete pass followed by a couple yard loss by Ball put the team in a 4th-and-6 position.

Badger%20Poster.jpg
Geoff Hammersley
Oh Well: Ohio State landed the first senior day loss to the Bielema-era in Madison

Like in the Purdue game, the vaunted Buckeye defense put their opponent in a passing situation with the game on the line. Just like in the Purdue game, Wisconsin’s fourth down play in overtime was broken up. Christian Bryant defended the pass to Jacob Pedersen, and the Buckeyes escaped Camp Randall Stadium with a 21-14 win, and an undefeated record still intact at 11-0.

What was happening in the college football world?

• Leading up to The Game, Michigan was able win secure their eighth win of the season by defeating Iowa, 42-17. Wolverine quarterback Devin Gardner lobbed for three scores and 314 yards while Denard Robinson put up close to 100 yards on the ground.

• The No. 1 team in the nation, Oregon, was a crossbar away from going 11-0. In an overtime loss to Stanford, the game-changing moment occurred in the only overtime possession for the Ducks. A missed 41-yard field goal off the post led to Stanford getting the ball only needing a field goal to win. The Cardinal converted, and defeated the Ducks, 17-14.

• Oregon wasn’t the only top team to collapse. No. 2 Kansas State was stream rolled by Baylor, 52-24, in Waco, TX. Colin Klein, a future Heisman finalist, struggled against the Bears defense, throwing three interceptions.

• No. 3 Notre Dame cruised to a 38-0 victory against Wake Forest, placing them in the driver seat for a trip to the Orange Bowl for a National Championship.

Current Events??

• The CIA gets a new director after General David Petraeus resigns.

• Larry Hagman, best known for his role of J.R. in the show Dallas, passes away. The four-time Golden Globe nominated actor was 81.

• New York and New Jersey work on the clean up efforts after the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy.

Welcome to your tri-weekly look at all things Ohio State recruiting. Let’s get started!

Trevon Grimes Has Made His Decision:

We learned this morning that Ft. Lauderdale wide receiver Trevon Grimes has let the coaching staff of the school he will be attending know that they have his commitment. Luke Stampini from 247 spoke to Grimes who confirmed that he had let the coaching staff know.

Grimes will make his decision public next Thursday August 24th, and all signs point to him picking the Buckeyes. Grimes is ranked as the nations #15 overall prospect and the #3 wide receiver in the class of 2017.

Another 2019 Offer Out:

Ohio State reached out yesterday and offered Stephen Herron Jr., a weak-side defensive end from the class of 2019. Herron hails from Louisville, Kentucky and plays at Trinity High School where he will be a Sophomore this season. In his freshman season he totaled 75 tackles and 5 sacks with 5 tackles for a loss. Herron currently holds five offers from Ohio State, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville and Tennessee.

Herron currently has 3 crystal ball predictions in, and already 2 to the Buckeyes. He called the offer “mind-blowing,” per Steve Wiltfong at 247 Sports ($).

Tyjon Lindsey on the Move:

It seems like Tyjon Lindsey will be headed back to his old high-school of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas to play out his senior year. Lindsey was apparnetly going to have to sit out the first five games of the season if he played for Centennial High School, so the decision to go back and play with his old teammates makes sense. He will be reunited with Tate Martell who he lived with before moving back to California, and who might possibly be his quarterback at the next level if Lindsey picks the Buckeyes on Monday like most expect.

Centennial Coach Matt Logan said he expects WR Tyjon Lindsey to end up back at Bishop Gorman.

— eric sondheimer (@latsondheimer) August 17, 2016

2018 In-State Prospect Schedules Visits:

L’Christian “Blue” Smith, a 2018 WR out of Dayton, OH has scheduled his fall visits and Ohio State looks to be getting him on campus twice as he will be visiting for the Bowling Green game on Sept. 3rd and The Game on Nov. 26th. Smith holds offers from 11 programs including Alabama, Michigan and Michigan State. The main competitor for his services right now seems to be Michigan State, and he will be seeing them only once by the looks of things. Most experts think he will end up a Buckeye when it is all said and done, and I believe the same, however I can see this recruitment taking a bit longer than expected.

a-Hohlmayer-150x150.jpg

When I started this listing of great Buckeyes, the obvious such as Jesse Owens, Jack Nicklaus, Woody Hayes, Archie Griffin, Jerry Lucas, Herb Williams, and Katie Smith were all guaranteed to be mentioned. Their accomplishments were completely golden and were well beyond the purpose of this weekly briefing of some of the greatest athletes to ever wear Scarlet and Gray. On occasion, in the joy of researching, pops up a name of a ”relatively” unknown that is completely equal of recognition of any of the names that I have mentioned above. Some of those names were Yoshi Oyakawa, Nate Brooks, and Linda Kalafatis. This week’s mention is one of those prized diamonds found in the rough.

Alice “Lefty” Hohlmayer competed for Ohio State before there were varsity sports for women. She, undoubtedly, is considered one of the finest and most versatile athletes ever to play for the Ohio State University. Hohlmayer was a member of the “Varsity” field hockey, volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, fencing, badminton, archery and mixed tennis teams during her time on campus. She once said: “I bore easily. I want to be the best at everything … I am a very good typer too.”

In 1946, she pitched and played first base in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The “A League of Their Own” movie chronicled her story as played by Rosie O’Donnell. Hohlmayer set a league record with 21 put outs at first base and was later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1988. The Buckeyes “wised” up and enshrined her into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001 – way too late in my opinion – but better late than never.

She actually got a hit off legendary Satchel Paige who said afterwards, “Her swing targets the ball. She is really good.” She also traveled to Japan with Joe DiMaggio on a mission to promote the sport of baseball and to unite the two nations together on a common ground with their love for the sport. Penny Marshall dined with her in NYC – saying, “Wow! I am impressed. She’s the real deal!” The Ohio State University Athletic Department has labeled her as one of the greatest and most versatile athletes to ever play for the Buckeyes.

At $800 a season, she was the highest paid rookie to ever come through the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The League had emerged in the spring of 1943 after World War II had forced most minor league teams into obscurity and taken many quality players away from the major league clubs. It was already in full swing for three seasons before Hohlmayer even heard of it. Once she did – nothing would be the same for the League. She was a star.

In field hockey it is said that she had such a powerful swing that the ball would be resting inside the goal for several seconds as the opposing team looked around to see where it had gone. And in archery some called her ‘Robin Hood’.

Alice Hohlmayer has also been inducted into the San Diego Women’s Hall Of Fame in 2005.

With all of these accomplishments, compliments, and acknowledgments, it is admittedly an honor to add her name to our list. I saw the film ‘A League of Their Own’ as I am certain many of you did as well. I even knew of Alice, and that she had been a student athlete at The Ohio State University. But, and I will speak for myself, when you jump into such an adventure to detail briefly some of the greatest athletes from such a powerhouse sports school as OSU the easy route is often to bring up the names we all know, that is at the tip of our thoughts whenever we discuss whatever sport it is we are discussing. But when the desire to find that “relatively-unknown” gem sprouts into your mind I am quite pleased to say I ran with it. In my re-introduction to Alice Hohlmayer I have indeed recognized that The Ohio State University is precisely what I mentioned above – a powerhouse sports school – and they always have been. Think about it – how cool would it be to get a hit off Satchel Paige and then have him say that you are “…really good!” To watch the opposition look around like a comedy movie for the ball that you hit in field hockey into the goal that now rests for a point awaiting for everyone else’s attention to catch up? Or to be called Robin Hood? Alice Hohlmayer not only deserves to Make the List, she wrote it.

Larry-Johnson-150x150.jpg

If you follow me on twitter you know that at some point yesterday evening I got up off of my couch and ran through my basement wall. Keep in mind that I am a 48 year old male and not a young college kid that gets to listen to him all day, everyday. There’s been some pretty good mic’d up series coming out of the program of late, but the best by far happened with defensive line coach Larry Johnson.

The best defensive line coach in the country wears the mic today.#PowerOfTheUnit #TheEdge https://t.co/9m5szuA32K

— Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) August 17, 2016

The first time that I felt like running through a wall for an Ohio State coach was when the recruit visit video of Coach Coombs hit the interwebs.

Both of these men are my kind of old school coaches. Coach Johnson reminds me of a coach that I had in peewee football when I was 12 years old. His motivation for me as a player was to never leave anything on the field. I get the feeling that Coach Johnson has always had this standard of approaching young impressionable men.

He has an amazing track record with developing defensive linemen; five first team AA, multiple NFL draft picks while at PSU and since coming to OSU. The next message is a pretty good reason to run through a wall for him. No room for average in his world or the Ohio State football world and Urban Meyer is obviously grateful. One thing to keep in mind if you haven’t seen this yet, he is fired up!

Very lucky to have a coach like Larry Johnson on this staff to push our team past THE EDGE to become ELITE pic.twitter.com/9eD0FiEd0i

— Urban Meyer (@OSUCoachMeyer) August 17, 2016

After watching that video last night:

"If you're Elite today, grab someone and take them with you" Larry Johnson. This quote will stick #LeadersLead

— Chris Hunt (@WVaBuckeye) August 18, 2016

Leaders lead was the gist of the message from Coach Johnson to the young men listening and the above quote will stick with me and several fans for a very long time. It obviously hit home with my comrade Shannon Sommers.

If you are someone who is okay with being average, there’s no place for you in this football program. Coach Johnson’s(and Shannon’s) point here is don’t let those people be average. Grab them, pick them up, motivate them to come with you and pass #TheEdge to help them elite!

I ran through my wall for Coach Johnson, what do you think those players will do with that same motivation?

The Buckeyes continue to work toward the future

Whether it’s 2016 recruiting class members losing their "black stripes" and becoming official members of the Ohio State football program or the highlight videos released by the Buckeye media team, the 2016 edition of fall camp is coming close to an end. The season is nearing with each passing day and the Buckeye football team and staff seem as hungry as ever for the season to get under way.

Herron Jr. lands OSU offer

Ohio State has been incredible when it comes to recruiting defensive end prospects out of high school. Whether it's NFL product Joey Bosa, younger brother and current Buckeye Nick Bosa or Sam Hubbard, there is no shortage of talent at the defensive end position in Columbus. Yesterday, the Ohio State staff looked to continue the trend of recruiting high profile defensive ends by extending a new offer to a youngster with three prep seasons still to be played.

Stephen Herron Jr. (Louisville, KY / Trinity) announced via his Twitter account yesterday that the Buckeyes were the latest to throw their hat into the ring.

Truly blessed to have been offered by THE Ohio State University!! ⚪️#GoBuckeyes #OSU @Ant_Coughlan @OhioStateFB pic.twitter.com/6zibrODg5N

— Stephen Herron, Jr (@stephenherron_) August 18, 2016

A sophomore to be, Herron already has incredible size at 6-foot-4, 220 pounds. While he doesn't yet own a 247sports recruit ranking, the 2019 defensive end will clearly be a top recruit in the country when those rankings are made available.

Herron has five offers already, including home state programs Louisville and Kentucky. The Buckeyes not only have to contend with Bluegrass programs, but fellow Big Ten institution Indiana joined in on the fray – as did the University of Tennessee.

With his recent offer, look for other top programs around the country to take notice and begin to chase after Herron. Louisville has to be an early leader being so close to Herron's home, but an Ohio State offer certainly has to be in a league of its own.

Lindsey and OSU trending?

We are well under two weeks away from the excitement when Tyjon Lindsey (Las Vegas, NV / Bishop Gorman) makes his final decision on where he will play his college football. Lindsey, expected to head to Columbus and complete the trio of Bishop Gorman Buckeyes, still has time before his decision date.

However, signs continue to trend upwards for Urban Meyer and Ohio State's 2017 recruiting class. Yesterday, the infamous 247sports crystal ball graph received two more predictions in favor of the Buckeyes in terms of Tyjon Lindsey eventual landing spot.

One of the predictions happened to come from a Nebraska recruiting insider. The Cornhuskers, a competitor and maybe biggest threat to Ohio State for Lindsey seem to also believe that it's the Buckeyes who will win out in the end. If so, you can lock it down for the 2017 recruiting class to be one of the more historical classes in Urban Meyer's career.

Blue sets visit dates for fall

L'Christian "Blue" Smith (Huber Heights, OH / Wayne High School) is becoming a household name in Ohio State recruiting. Ohio's top receiver in 2018 and the nation's top athlete according to rivals.com announced yesterday via his Twitter account his plans for the fall and who he will be visiting. Making the list not once, but twice, Ohio State will continue to host the stud athlete from just an hour away for the home opener and against Michigan.

These are the schools I will be visiting this season.... #blessed pic.twitter.com/zUC8jNsGqN

With "Blue" making it to campus several times already, Ohio State has to feel good for where they are currently sitting for Smith. However, if Ohio State really wants to make a statement with Smith, they may have to extend an offer to fellow Wayne Warrior teammate, Alex Reigelsperger who would love nothing more than to be a "package deal" with his good friend. One thing is for sure: The Wayne to Ohio State connection could be in for another great relationship in 2018.

A big moment for the young men!

Losing your black stripe is the greatest thing that could happen to you as a young Buckeye. At least early on, before winning tons of football games happens over the duration of their career, of course.

That’s what Jordan Leasure and Binjimen Victor experienced Thursday, much to the pleasure of their teammates and coaches surrounding them. It was a good moment for the young Bucks as we inch closer and closer to the first game of the season.

Leasure and Victor joined Rodjay Burns and Dwayne Haskins, who both lost their black stripes Wednesday on the practice field. You could say it’s been a pretty good week for the Buckeye youth.

In case it still needs to be said, the future is very bright for the Ohio State Buckeyes. September 3 can’t come quick enough.

Go Bucks!

If Kyle Snyder’s collegiate wrestling career to date could be summed up as dramatic, his international career has been astounding. For the five or six years preceding 2015, the 96/97kg weight class had been dominated by former Buckeye JD Bergman and 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jake Varner from Bakersfield, CA.

Ohio State fans were spared the agonizing choice of having to witness a Snyder/Bergman match. In more recent bouts it has been Varner reversing most past results to best Bergman, and then Snyder taking it to Varner, as he did in the 2015 US Open, 2015 US Team Trials and 2016 Olympic Trials.

Of course, sandwiched between the 2015 and 2016 Trials was Snyder’s epic win at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas. Snyder was a bit lucky in the sense that his trip to the finals included matches against challenging opponents who nonetheless paled in comparison to the resumes of the wrestlers in the opposite bracket.

Still, in the semifinals Snyder opposed veteran Abbas Tahan of Iran. With a narrow lead at the end of the match, the American teenager stood at the center and aggressively motioned to a complaining Tahan to stop stalling and return to the mat. Weak bracket or not, the win propelled Snyder to an incomparable trip to the finals against perennial strong man Abdusalam Gadisov of Russia.

Kyle Snyder, currently ranked 4th in the world by United World Wrestling, has several things going for him, including confidence, a constant devotion to the mental aspects of his craft and an unmatched work ethic. But, when combined with those attributes, the thing that makes him a world force is his 20 year old motor, something that was in clear evidence against Varner in their many matches, and against Tahan and Gadisov in that remarkable day in Las Vegas in 2015.

Patented ankle picks staked Snyder to a late lead. Not wishing to get caught in a tragic mistake (as happened to him in the 2015 NCAA finals) and owning the tie break, Snyder simply played it tough from a defensive standpoint to avoid a takedown which would reverse the desired result. When a late, perhaps phantom, pushout brought the score to even at 5, Snyder’s corner wanted to contest the call. Showing poise and mental strength in the heat of battle, Snyder declined to challenge. Knowing he had the older Gadisov on the ropes, Snyder did not want to offer a vital rest recovery despite the fact he might gain a point back.

Few scenes in sport can match what was about to happen when Snyder victoriously blanketed himself with the American flag, circled the mat and fell to his knees in thankful praise.

By ranking, No. 4 Kyle Snyder is not a favorite to win gold this Sunday on the final day of the Rio Olympics. He was beaten somewhat convincingly at a Russian tournament in January by No. 1 Anzor Boltukayev of the doping plagued Russian Federation. He was also beaten narrowly by No. 3 Khetag Gazyumov of Azerbaijan.

But we have seen this before. Snyder has proven to be a student of the game, unafraid to experiment, grow and get stronger. Any one of a dozen wrestlers are capable of winning gold but it really is hard to bet against Snyder.

In the 2016 Olympic Trials Jake Varner came out and won a tightly contested first of three matches with Snyder. Snyder reset his focus for match two and Varner never had a chance from that point on. Snyder has been preparing and focusing on Sunday for enough time now that a new historic chapter seems well within his grasp.

Now that he is healthy, Wilson is hoping to impress in his final year in Columbus

“I feel like I needed to show people that I haven’t gone anywhere. They’ve got me here; I’m still going to bring something to the table every game, and that it’s finally time.”

Ohio State H-back Dontre Wilson via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Expectations were high when Dontre Wilson came to Ohio State from Texas as a four-star recruit in 2013. Now entering his senior season in Columbus, the hype hasn’t quite materialized for Wilson, but the hybrid back still has one season left to prove himself for the Buckeyes. When he first committed to Ohio State, many saw Wilson in the mold of Percy Harvin, who head coach Urban Meyer coached at Florida. Not only have injuries slowed Wilson in his first three years at Ohio State, but also there have been other offensive options who have emerged during that time. Last season Braxton Miller got a lot of the snaps at H-back after he switched to the position from quarterback before the season.

Now with Miller, as well as a number of other starters from last year’s Ohio State offense now gone, Wilson will try and make the most of his senior season. The key for Wilson will be if he is able to stay healthy throughout the season. In 2014 Wilson only appeared in 10 games, and last year he was only healthy for nine games. Not only does the coaching staff know that Wilson still has plenty to offer on the field with his explosiveness, but Wilson feels the same way. During this offseason Wilson has posted a number of videos to Twitter, showcasing him getting ready for the season, and reminding everyone else of what he brings to the table. Throughout his college career, many Buckeye fans have been waiting for Wilson to break a big play with his speed, and if he is able to stay healthy fans might get to see that a few times during his final year with the Buckeyes.

“Coming in I was pretty decent at pass blocking. I was better than most running backs coming in at the high school level. I’m getting better. I’m going against Raekwon McMillan, Dante Booker, guys that are gonna get me better at pass protection. We go at it every day and it’s really making me better.”

Ohio State running back Mike Weber via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Not only does Mike Weber have big shoes to fill when it comes to what Ezekiel Elliott did with the football in his hands, but he is also tasked with trying to measure up to Elliott when it comes to pass protection. One of the most overlooked parts of Elliott’s game the past couple years was how well he was able to block in the backfield and give his quarterback extra time to make reads. Pro Football Focus found that Elliott was used 108 times last year as a pass blocker and of those times Elliott only allowed one quarterback pressure. While it might be hard to imagine Weber excelling as much as Elliott did in pass protection, Ohio State is still going to need a strong effort from him if they have any designs on winning the Big Ten and making the College Football Playoff.

Early returns on Weber’s blocking have been good, as head coach Urban Meyer says that Weber and Curtis Samuel are the two best blocking backs in the program, but they aren’t quite at Elliott’s level yet. Weber knows that he’ll have to continue his early success, and if he doesn’t Meyer wasn’t shy about saying that he won’t play if he can’t block. Since Weber isn’t as good of a blocker yet as Elliott was, it may force the coaching staff to tweak their game plan, putting a little more pressure on the tight ends and offensive line. A big bonus for Weber is he gets to practice against talented linebackers like McMillan and Booker, which should help him improve his blocking even more as the year moves on.

“My teammates really helped me push through it. I’m looking forward to this year. It’s a new year, I’m healthy and I’m ready to go out there with my guys again.”

Ohio State wide receiver Noah Brown via Chris Cullum, Ohio State Athletics Communications

Much like at running back, Ohio State lost some key contributors at wide receiver from last year’s team, and will be hoping some new faces can help pick up the slack after Michael Thomas and Jalin Marshall left for the NFL. One of those faces is Noah Brown, who likely would have seen significant playing time last season had he not missed the season due to a leg injury. So far the returns on Brown heading into this year have been glowing, and he is likely going to play a big role in a young Buckeye offense.

After missing all of last season, Brown is hungry to get back out onto the field and contribute. The biggest difference that Brown’s teammates have noticed heading into this season are with his hands, which quarterback J.T. Barrett likened to “suction cups”. With over 80% of last year’s receptions being made by players who aren’t on the team anymore, if Brown’s strong training camp work can carry over into the regular season, he’ll likely

“We don’t feel any pressure. Preparations (have) been year-round, and we are ready to meet any challenge we experience this year and put in a lot of work.”

Ohio State defensive end Sam Hubbard via Nicholas McWilliams, The Lantern

Heading into this season, there are plenty of questions about how Ohio State’s defense will respond after losing so many starters from last year’s team. The biggest hole the Buckeyes need to fill will be the one left at defensive end by Joey Bosa. Luckily for Ohio State they have two very talented ends that saw some success last year in putting pressure on the quarterback. Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis combined for 14.5 sacks last season, but some of that was due to the extra attention that Bosa was given by the opposition. The duo already got a little taste what life without Bosa was like last season, when Bosa was suspended was not only suspended for the season opener against Virginia Tech, but also when he was ejected early in the Fiesta Bowl to close out the year.

Big things are expected from Lewis and Hubbard this year, and they should be able to live up to those expectations after getting to work even more with strength coach Mickey Marotti and defensive line coach Larry Johnson in the offseason. Now that it has been announced that defensive lineman Darius Slade will be out for the season, even more pressure will be placed on the two defensive ends to continue to create the pass rush that was seen from the Buckeyes last season. Even more than their play on the field, both are also expected to be leaders for some of the younger Ohio State defensive linemen coming in, one of which is Joey Bosa’s younger brother Nick. The two are happy to take on their leadership roles and if last year’s performance from the duo is any indiction, Ohio State’s defensive line should be able to create pressure in the backfield and allow the rest of their defense to make plays.
