tBBC Former Marketing Executive Sues Eugene Melnyk

Former Marketing Executive Sues Eugene Melnyk

Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

melnykrelaxhat.jpg

After years of rumours and stories regarding Eugene Melnyk’s relationship and treatment of employees, one has finally seen the light of day.

Thanks to the filing of a 23-page claim by Peter O’Leary, the team’s former chief marketing officer and vice-president of ticketing, fans have been provided with a rare and surreal glimpse into the dynamics and inner workings of the hockey club.

Postmedia’s Wayne Scanlan has a fantastic write-up in both local papers (Ottawa Citizen, Ottawa Sun) chronicling the details of O’Leary’s claim and for Melnyk, the timing couldn’t be worse.

Not only will this negative PR be distracting for a hockey team that is trying to clinch a playoff berth and make some noise in the first round, news of the claim arrived the night before Melnyk’s inaugural gala in Toronto for ‘The Organ Project’.

This filing is centred on the dissonance between O’Leary and the Senators’ owner.

On one hand, O’Leary is alleging that his firing on December 12, 2016, was a breach of his contract and that Melnyk created a toxic work environment through some abusive behaviour.

Within the claim, O’Leary’s representatives portrayed a disconnect within the organization’s hierarchy wherein their client received strong performance reviews from then-president and COO Cyril Leeder while Melnyk “at times used profanity and levelled insults at executive team members, including constantly calling into question their competency. Mr. Melnyk sent abusive emails to the executive team and frequently threatened to dismiss them.”

And all this time I believed that alleged abusive emails only led to long-time Swedish captains bolting for the Red Wings, hey-o!

According to the filing, Melnyk’s allegedly blamed O’Leary for the team’s gate revenue and struggles at the box office. In his defence, Melnyk’s representatives will argue that this constitutes just cause for rightful dismissal. Per the Scanlan’s article, “Melnyk signed the termination letter, calling O’Leary ‘dishonest’ and his performance ‘dismal,’ citing absenteeism and a failure to co-operate with outside consultants.”

I don’t know whether there’s any truth to the claims of absenteeism, but considering Melnyk has spent most of his time running the Senators from Toronto and Barbados and even allegedly asked O’Leary “How and when did you get the title of Chief Marketing Officer?”, he’d be one to know.

Of course, this team’s disappointing ticket sales aren’t simply a by-product of the marketing department’s decisions – although, this team’s marketing and brand warrant legitimate criticism.

The federal government’s Phoenix pay system, the RedBlacks’ Grey Cup run and the accompanying competitive market for entertainment dollars, an oversaturated home schedule in the early portion of the season, the location and game-day experience at the Canadian Tire Centre and general fan apathy have all played a role here.

Melnyk, of course, has never accepted responsibility for how his words, actions or playoff mandate have not only negatively affected the decision-making of his front office but shaken this fan base’s confidence in him, as an owner, to deliver a winner to this city.

Although this claim seems destined for a settlement where non-disclosure agreements will stop the flow of information, the damage however is already done.

Irrespective of how this claim unfolds, there are important items alleged within:

  • The organization’s ticket sales were down and the team was losing money.
  • This loss of revenue contributed to O’Leary’s assertion that it made it difficult for the Senators to retain or attract staff “when the hockey club reduced net pay and was late on bonus pay. He alleges the Senators made all departments reduce spending by 10 per cent, which led to personnel reductions, including janitors.”
  • Further legal action is pending from ousted managers seeking severance.”

This claim could just be the first of many. With it getting the front-page treatment in the two local papers and some national exposure on Yahoo! Sports, it may be tough to put this genie back in the bottle.

Rightly or wrongly, the Harold Ballard comps aren’t going to stop anytime soon and this claim just lends credence to the perception that Melnyk is difficult to work for and is only concerned with the bottom line.

Other News and Notes:

  • Since the trade deadline on March 1st, the Senators have taken the most minor penalties in the league with 64. Considering the recent struggles of the team at 5v5 and on the PK, the Senators could do themselves a favour by staying out of the box.
  • Erik Karlsson’s streak of consecutive games played ended last night at 324. It was the first game that Karlsson has missed since returning from a partially severed Achilles tendon. Karlsson was feeling the effects of a blocked shot from Tuesday night’s game in Philadelphia.
  • After last night’s unwatchable 5-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild, the players held a closed-door meeting. With the Leafs two-points back and the Bruins three-points back, playing with a sense of urgency is something that the Senators can actually afford.

usa_today_9551055.0.jpg

We knew he was leaving. Now we know where to.

Earlier this month, Ohio State announced that James Clark would not be returning to Ohio State, as he would complete his degree and seek a graduate transfer. Now, we know his destination.

Per the Daytona Beach-Journal, Clark will join the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Clark, a former four-star prospect from New Smyrna Beach, FL, never really blew up with Ohio State, as injuries to his ankle and hamstring slowed his career. He finished with six catches and 47 yards last season, with only one catch going over ten yards.

Per the report, how Tech head coach Justin Fuente used his wideouts last year helped seal the deal:

"You can see the production they have out of the receivers," Clark said. "And as a team, they went to the ACC championship last year, and they know how to get their playmakers the ball.

Clark was reportedly also considering South Florida. He’ll compete with Ohio State’s track team this spring, and head to Virginia Tech later this summer.

It was easy to see that Clark had lots of potential, and hopefully he’s able to be healthy this season and fully realize it for Virginia Tech.

The Buckeyes are hoping to start turning the season around against an improved Boilermakers squad.

Tuesday’s 3-0 victory over Ohio University didn’t feel like a typical midweek game for the Ohio State baseball team. After being swept two straight weekends by Xavier and Minnesota, the Buckeyes were in desperate need of something good happening on the field, something to stave off, if even for a few days, the feeling of the season teetering on the brink of collapse.

“It was one of those games where we wanted to get guys work, but we thought we needed to win also,” head coach Greg Beals told The Lantern. “We needed to get on winning ways. We needed to change the air and the only way to do that is to have some success and win a ballgame.”

It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but that isn’t the point. Ohio State did just enough with the bats, getting the kind of timely hitting that has eluded the club for much of the season, and had one of its most solid performances of the year on the mound in notching its first shutout. Coming out on top doesn’t change the fact that the Buckeyes sit four games below .500, or that they started 0-3 in Big Ten play, but heading into the second weekend of conference play, it provides a little extra feeling of momentum.

Last season, Ohio State’s sweep of Purdue was a jumping-off point for the success the team would experience later in the season. The Buckeyes are hopeful that this weekend’s three games against the Boilermakers can have a similar effect.

“Last year at this time, we kind of had it tough. We were kind of battling out, seeing what pieces fit where,” said redshirt senior Jake Post. “We got time to adjust, and I think this weekend against an opponent like Purdue would be a good spark for us.”

Beals will once again be short-handed with his pitching staff, as senior starter Adam Niemeyer (elbow tendinitis) and junior reliever Kyle Michalik (ankle sprain) continue to rehab from injury, causing the rotation and bullpen roles to be question marks heading into Friday night.

Ohio State can’t afford to be on the receiving end of a sweep for the third straight weekend or to fall too far behind in the Big Ten standings. If the scarlet and gray has any designs on avoiding a lost season and defending its conference tournament championship, the turnaround must start now.

Purdue Boilermakers (13-11, 1-2 in Big Ten play)

First year head coach Mark Wasikowski inherited a massive rebuilding project when he took over the Purdue program. The Boilers had a woeful 10-44 record in 2016 under former head man Doug Schreiber, who had been at the helm since 1998. But Wasikowski has been resolute in his belief that things could be turned around.

"The way you turn things around is simple: You have a solid plan, a solid system, and bring in great players to develop with that system,” he told SB Nation’s Hammer and Rails after being hired last July. “When you recruit players to fit into your system that is when you get results."

While recruiting is a long-term venture, Purdue is already way of last season’s pace, having recently put together a seven-game winning streak and already notching wins against high-quality programs that would have seemed impossible a year ago. The Boilers are scoring nearly double the amount of runs per game as they did in 2016.

Leading the attack at the plate for Purdue sophomore catcher Nick Dalesandro and freshman center fielder Skyler Hunter. Hunter has been among the most impressive rookies in the Big Ten, slashing .384/.429/.438, while Dalesandro has built upon a solid first season last year to post a .366/.423/..505 slash line, knocking five doubles, two home runs, and driving in 20 runs in the team’s first 24 games.

Sophomore first baseman Jacson McGowan has supplied plenty of pop in the cleanup position as well, leading the team with eight doubles, three homers, and 24 RBIs.

If anything is holding back the Boilermakers’ revival, though, it has been the pitching staff. Wasikowski’s arms have a collective 5.44 earned run average, a WHIP just under 1.50, and an opposition batting average of .280. Given the Buckeyes’ struggles at the plate of late, it appears this is the perfect opportunity for the team to get its bats going.

The weekend rotation for Purdue is anchored by junior right-hander Tanner Andrews, who has posted a 4-1 record in six starts, with a 3.55 ERA and a nearly 4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, while limiting opposing hitters to a .223 average.

Behind Andrews are sophomore southpaw Gareth Stroh, a junior college transfer who has struggled a bit, going 1-2 with a 6.83 ERA, a WHIP of 2.06, and an opposition batting average of .354, and right-handed sophomore Mike Kornacker, who has yielded an ERA of 5.00 and opponent clip of .324 in seven appearances that includes three starts.

But despite the trouble the rotation has had, the Boilers’ bullpen has been strong. Junior lefty Ross Learnard has allowed just a single run in 10 appearances covering 17 innings, and freshman righty Dalton Parker has saved four games, limiting opponents to a .143 clip at the plate and sporting a WHIP under 1.00. If Ohio State is to come out on top this weekend, its lineup will need to jump on the starters.

The Buckeyes offers another Georgia stud DB.

With Ohio State’s Pro Day concluded and spring practice in full effect for the 2017 Buckeyes, Urban Meyer and his staff have so far been very pleased with what they are seeing in their squad. With the pedal to the metal on developing their team for the upcoming season, the football coaching staff has also been able to play host to some of the nation’s most prized recruits for the 2018 and 2019 classes. There’s rarely any downtime for this coaching staff and lately, Columbus has been what seems like a five-star resort, as it has been able to lure the talent to its stomping grounds.

Georgia the new Ohio?

The Buckeyes have certainly made it no secret that they are in love with recruiting the talent-rich state of Georgia. The past few season under the helm of Urban Meyer has seen Georgia become a top priority recruiting destination — and maybe the highest priority besides Ohio and Florida. While securing a current 2018 commitment from top quarterback prospect Emory Jones, it looks as if Meyer and his gang have serious intentions for scooping more of the South’s best.

Yesterday, while visiting Columbus to see what the Buckeyes have to offer, three-star Georgia prospect Chris Smith was the latest to earn an Ohio State offer. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Atlanta cornerback is currently ranked as the 36th best at his position and the 41st best prospect at any position in Georgia for 2018, according to 247sports.

Honored to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University #GoBucks !! pic.twitter.com/GGDwTSwwHB

— Chris Smith ll ✯ (@cpsmithdb) March 30, 2017

With 29 offers, it’s no surprise to see why Ohio State likes what they see in Smith. As we’ve seen many times too, those lower star rankings usually tend to increase when certain schools pull the trigger and offer the prospect. One thing is for certain though, the Buckeyes liked him enough to offer him and with Urban Meyer’s track record, that’s all that matters.

#Shhhhh18 https://t.co/LaK1gWb13Y

— Emory Jones (@eXjones6) March 30, 2017

The home state Georgia Bulldogs have thought to be the favorite to land Smith, but current Buckeye commit Emory Jones certainly wouldn’t mind changing that thought. It will be a race to the finish, but with Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Cal, LSU and many more in the mix, Ohio State will have their work cut out for them.

OSU’s future is bright thanks to their backyard

One of the perks of being the Ohio State Buckeyes is the ability to hold a nationwide presence in the recruiting spectrum. Fortunately, sometimes Ohio State doesn’t even have to leave their own area code to find some of the nation’s best due to the talent within their own border.

Current 2018 commit Jaelen Gill (Westerville, OH / Westerville South) made the short trek over to the Woody Hayes facility to take in another Ohio State’s spring practice.

4-star running back and Buckeye commit @jaelengill21 was in attendance today at practice. pic.twitter.com/IoOydfBUXC

— Patrick Murphy (@_Pat_Murphy) March 30, 2017

The great aspect of the Gill sweepstakes that certainly played a pivotal role in the Buckeyes landing the four-star all-purpose back in their own back yard is the familiarity they have with Ohio’s second ranked prospect.

Ohio State may have had Gill on hand today, but make no mistake about it, running-back coach Tony Alford and Urban Meyer cannot wait to unleash the next infamous H-back type athlete they love to showcase in the highly touted Buckeyes offense.

In-state LB checks out spring practice

Sticking with the trend of in-state prospects right in the Buckeyes backyard, Ohio State played host to Dublin Coffman linebacker Jeslord Boateng. Boateng, a three-star prospect is currently ranked as Ohio’s 34th best prospect at any position and the 61st best outside linebacker in the country, according to 247sports.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound outside linebacker currently holds 10 offers. Schools such as Cincinnati, Ball State, Bowling Green, Indiana and Iowa State have already put their hat into the ring for his services, but a visit to Ohio State shows Boateng has dreams of landing the Buckeye offer. A visit may just put him in the conversation, but Ohio State of course has a great chance at being able to land their choice at the position for the 2018 class.

t3Fhlgup_400x400.jpg

Here we are Motsag Sports subscribers with another recruiting spotlight on 2021 Quarterback prospect Jackson Allen from Hattiesburg, MS. We know this is a bit off but the young man is currently the #3 overall Quarterback prospect and considered to be one of the best Dual-Threat prospects even at this early stage in his development. Here is the interview, enjoy!

R.T: With it being so long until you sign your letter of intent, what schools are you currently hearing from?

J.A: Well the past few years, I have had Mississippi State show interest, and mainly that’s it, but I think with me just getting my film out there to colleges and me performing well my freshman year will really help me out as far as interest goes.

R.T: Are there any schools that you are highly interested in at this moment?

J.A: I have grown up a Mississippi State fan, so Mississippi State has been my number 1 school and I love how Dan Mullen works with quarterbacks. I think he is the best in the business at progressing quarterbacks, but I also love Alabama. I love how their offense is, they will spread the defense out from the shotgun but they will also go from under center and work their offense from there. So those are my 2 favorite schools right now.

R.T: What offers do you currently have? Which offers would you like to have prior to your National Signing Day moment?

J.A: At this point, I don’t have an offer. I’m only in the 8th grade, but I think if I perform well my freshman and sophomore years, the offers will come flowing in. I think it is just the competitor inside of you that want to have every D1 scholarship in the country going into signing day.

R.T: What factors do you consider “musts” for the schools that you are interested in?

J.A: My number top 3 “must” would be: 1. Being able to compete for the job as a freshman right when I get on campus. 2. Would be the right system for me as a quarterback. And number 3: Would be, being comfortable with the coaching staff and my position coach.

R.T: Being from Hattiesburg, MS, did you become a quarterback because of Brett Favre? If not, who would you say influenced you to?

J.A: Being from Hattiesburg, MS and when I have to introduce myself to coaches and or media, the first question I get is, “does Brett Favre living in your town influence you to play quarterback?”. My first response is “no” because the funny thing is, I did not wanna play quarterback until my 3rd year of tackle football, which would be my 5th grade year, and the reason I never got to play a different position is because my dad forced me to play quarterback and it turned out amazing, so I give all the credit to my dad!

R.T: What type of quarterback are you? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What can you improve on?

J.A: I don’t hold myself to a specific type of quarterback. I believe I can do it all. I can throw it, I can run it, I can throw it on the run, I can manage the game, and I can make the players around me better. My biggest weakness is flexibility and I’m not the strongest in my core but I’m working hard to fix those things so I can find something else to critique about my game.

R.T: What type of leader are you on the field? And off the field?

J.A: On the field, I am a very intense leader. I feel like I know when to get onto a player and then when to just tell them you’ll get it next time, and I think that separates me from other guys. Off the field, I’m a little bit more laid back, but I do good in the classroom, and I encourage my teammates and classmates to do the same.

MotS&G Buckeyes Offer Georgia’s Chris Smith

By Trevor Arnold

The Buckeyes were on the move today with another Georgia scholarship. This one goes to Chris Smith II, who was on an unofficial visit today at Ohio State.

Smith is 3-star cornerback out of Atlanta Hapeville. He stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 170 pounds. He is the fifteenth cornerback offered by OSU for the 2018 class.

People who haven’t been paying attention sometimes look at the 3 stars and assume Ohio State can do better.

But Smith has now been offered by Alabama, Ohio State, and Michigan in addition to other top programs.

Remember a guy named Darron Lee, a 3-star quarterback drafted in first round as an NFL linebacker? Urban Meyer and staff have an elite eye for elite talent.

Of course offers like this often influence higher ratings so expect Smith’s ranking to increase throughout his senior year.

Smith has great speed and ball pursuit. It is still too early to tell where Smith will end up, but Buckeye fans should keep an eye on the Atlanta native.

With the loss of Curtis Samuel, the sophomore running back knows he needs to step up.

“Coach Alford is doing a good job of helping me lead the guys. We’ve been in the playbook, and everything that comes with being a leader, I’m learning that and taking on the task right now.”

Ohio State running back Mike Weber via Jeremy Birmingham, Land of 10

Last year Mike Weber had the task of trying to fill the shoes of Ezekiel Elliott. The redshirt freshman did all he could to help the Buckeye running game continue their recent run of dominance, becoming just the third Buckeye freshman to top 1,000 yards on the ground. As Weber heads into his sophomore season he has a new task in front of him, becoming one of the leaders of the offense. So far Weber has impressed running backs coach Tony Alford with his growth not only on the field, but also in working with the running backs behind him on the depth chart.

Elliott had the luxury of learning from Carlos Hyde, and in turn Elliott passed on his knowledge to Weber. Now it’s Weber’s turn to try and help groom fellow running backs Demario McCall and J.K. Dobbins. Urban Meyer calls the Ohio State running back position as one of college football “Cadillac” positions, and Weber is just trying to earn the carries. After getting 182 carries last season, Weber figures to see his workload increase this year, especially with Curtis Samuel leaving for the NFL. While last year Weber made a bit of a name for himself nationally with the season he put together, this year he’s trying to make sure that everybody knows his name by the end of the year.

“It’s easier to work multiple guys in during spring ball. The sense of urgency to settle on a guy isn’t as great as it would be in August. But that Meyer seemed comfortable with three players for two guard spots is a good sign for the Buckeyes.”

Bill Landis, Northeast Ohio Media Group

Ohio State may have some questions to answer heading into the 2017 season as they have to replace a number of starters on both sides of the football, but one of the units the Buckeyes don’t have to worry about as much is the offensive line. Four starters return from last year’s squad, and with a few linemen putting together strong spring practices, it could allow Ohio State the luxury of a bit of depth on the offensive line, something they have been working towards. After receiving some inconsistent play from true freshman guard Michael Jordan last year, head coach Urban Meyer is hoping the progress of some of the backups on the interior of the line continue their growth.

There is still five months until the start of the regular season, but the favorites to start at guard for the Buckeyes are Jordan and Demetrius Knox. Matthew Burrell isn’t going to make Meyer’s decision in the coming months as he has impressed lately, getting snaps with the first-team. Junior college transfer Malcolm Pridgeon, who missed last year due to injury, will help to add to the depth, as will Wyatt Davis, the top guard prospect in the country, who will join the Buckeyes in the summer. Now what has been an area of weakness recently, could quickly turn into an area of strength for the Buckeyes.

“What Nate has done, it drives you (and) shows you it can be done. Like Nate, I walked on here; I played since my freshman year on. Now I look at it as kind of just walking on again, but this time in the NFL. Let’s see if I can get a spot in the league, let’s see if I can make a name for myself and go from there.”

Former Ohio State linebacker Craig Fada via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

While it might be tough to match the two Super Bowl rings and appearance in the Olympics as a member of the United States rugby team that Nate Ebner has, the former Buckeye has provided a blueprint for a couple of Ohio State’s special teams aces the last couple years. Linebacker Craig Fada and safety Jarrod Barnes made a name for themselves as members of the kick-coverages units, and now they are just hoping for the same opportunity that Ebner got when New England drafted him in the sixth round in the 2012 NFL Draft.

If Fada and Barnes are going to be drafted this year, it’s likely they’ll have to wait until later on day three of the NFL Draft, but they were able to at least showcase their skills at Ohio State’s pro day last week. Even if they aren’t drafted, Fada and Barnes should be able to sign as undrafted free agents, but both have confidence they’ll be able to impress if there are teams out there willing to give them a shot. It would be wise for teams to at least give Fada and Barnes a look, since they could be getting themselves their own Nate Ebner, and each team needs at least one of those.

The Buckeye would rather watch the event with friends and family.

Despite being one of the top names this draft cycle, Ohio State safety Malik Hooker has decided to forego attending the official NFL Draft in Philadelphia, according to Pro Football Talk. Instead, the Buckeye will watch the annual event surrounded by his family and friends.

Hooker has been on the sidelines most of his path to the draft following surgery on his shoulder just after the Fiesta Bowl. He wasn’t able to compete in the workout or position drills at either the NFL Combine or Ohio State’s Pro Day, but that hasn’t stopped teams from showing serious interest. The safety is still considered a Top 10 prospect, especially after stating at the combine he expects to be back on the field for rookie mini-camp.

Skipping the draft has become a growing trend over the past few years, with the 2015 overall No. 1 and 2 picks (Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota) both opting to skip the traditional event and accept their fate remotely. Other players have started following suit, and are choosing to enjoy the moment with the people closest to them, rather than walking across the stage to shake NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s hand or give him a hug.

Ohio State basketball could make a special run next season.

Ohio State women’s basketball had a solid year, winning a regular season Big Ten title and making a run to the Sweet Sixteen. Next year could be even more special, thanks to an announcement from last night.

Ohio State’s leading scorer, Kelsey Mitchell, announced she will return to Ohio State for her senior season, via a university announcement. From her statement:

Getting a degree from The Ohio State University was one of my top goals when coming to college and I look forward to completing my degree next spring. My teammates and I also have a number of goals we have yet to accomplish on the court. One of those goals is to play in the Final Four and we have a tremendous opportunity to do that next year here in Columbus. I'm excited to get back in the gym with my teammates and continue to work to get better.

Unlike the NBA or NFL Draft, players don’t leave early for the WNBA Draft particularly often. But as a three-time All-American, Mitchell was certainly talented enough to make the jump early. Last year, Aerial Powers from Michigan State left after her junior season. She averaged more than 10 points a game for Dallas last year in the pros.

Had Mitchell left early, based on draft projections, she likely would have made around $40,000 from the WNBA, but also could have potentially played overseas for another, more lucrative, deal. Not bad money when you’re right out of college, but with another year at the college level and a chance to improve her draft stock, Mitchell might be able to make another $10,000 or so next season.

Mitchell could leave Columbus as one of the most decorated college basketball players in Buckeye history. Mitchell is currently third in scoring in Ohio State history, and if she has a strong season, could make a run at the record (Jantell Lavender’s 2818 points).

Last year, Mitchell was sixth nationally in three pointers made, and ninth nationally in scoring per game, with 22.6. With her returning, the Final Four in Columbus, and the level that Ohio State has recruited over the last few seasons (among the best in the sport), expectations will be high for the squad. As it should be.
