The Buckeyes fell 12-11 to the Scarlet Knights in New Jersey.

In their regular season finale, the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team fell 12-11 to the 13th-ranked Rutgers Scarlet Knights in Piscataway in their second-straight overtime game. With the loss, the Buckeyes fall to 12-3 on the season, including a 3-2 mark in conference play. Rutgers, meanwhile, improves to 10-4 on the year.

Despite winning the opening faceoff, the Buckeyes ceded the first goal of the day to Rutgers 2:34 into the opening quarter. However, less than a minute later, freshman attackman Lukas Buckley tied things up for the Buckeyes. Junior attackman Colin Chell followed up with a goal of his own to give Ohio State its first lead of the day. Midway through the quarter, after Rutgers tied things up once again 2-2, Chell scored his second goal of the game on an assist by senior attackman Eric Fannell. But, while a goal by freshman midfielder Tre Leclaire, once again assisted by Fannell, put the Buckeyes up two late in the first on a man-up opportunity, two quick scores by Rutgers tied the game at four-all heading into the second quarter.

Senior midfielder J.T. Blubaugh gave the Buckeyes a one-point edge on a goal less than a minute into the second quarter, assisted by Leclaire. Fannell then found the back of the net on a backhanded goal, assisted by senior midfielder Tyler Pfister. The Scarlet Knights scored the next two consecutive goals to wipe out the Buckeyes’ lead, but sophomore attackman Jack Jasinski scored on his own rebound for his first of the game midway through the quarter. Rutgers, however, would again tie things up at 7-7 heading into the break.

The Scarlet Knights came out strong in the third, scoring the first two goals of the half to take their largest lead of the day before Leclaire ended the run on a goal of his own. Leclaire then provided the critical assist for senior midfielder Johnny Pearson on a man-up goal, tying things up at nine-all late in the third.

Rutgers again jumped out to a two-goal lead early in the fourth. Then, with 5:51 remaining in regulation, Leclaire found the back of the net to cut the Scarlet Knights’ lead. He then tied things up with his fourth goal of the day with 3:00 remaining in the quarter. And though Ohio State had a shot coming out of a timeout for the win, Rutgers managed a save, sending the game to overtime.

After winning the opening faceoff, Rutgers scored in the first overtime period for the one-point win.

Leclaire’s four goals led the team, while Chell added two of his own. In all, seven players scored for the Buckeyes.

Overall shots were 41-37 in favor of Rutgers. Senior goalie Tom Carey had 11 saves on the day, moving up the list of all-time saves at Ohio State. He now has 436 career saves, good for 10th in program history. Rutgers had nine saves on the day.

Senior midfielder Jake Withers, last week’s Big Ten specialist of the week, won 12-of-19 faceoff attempts on the afternoon. Groundballs were 26-20 in favor of the Buckeyes, with Withers and sophomore defenseman Matt Borges leading Ohio State with four apiece.

Next up, Ohio State hosts the Big Ten men’s lacrosse tournament in Columbus Thursday, with winners moving to the finals Saturday. Ohio State is the No. 2 seed, behind Maryland, the regular season champions.

The Buckeyes scored eight late runs, but couldn’t overcome a huge deficit against the Huskers, losing 11-9.

Ohio State baseball had a golden opportunity staring it right in the eyes on Sunday. After splitting two games with Nebraska the day before and looking every bit the Huskers’ equals, the Buckeyes had a chance to notch an upset series victory against one of the Big Ten’s best teams.

As has been the case so often this season, though, Ohio State found itself behind big early and didn’t quite have the offense to fight back, ultimately falling 11-9 despite a feverish late comeback attempt.

Trailing 11-1 in the bottom of the eighth, the Buckeyes scored eight runs, trimming the deficit to two. Against lefty Nate Fisher, an RBI double by Jalen Washington scored Noah West, and Brady Cherry roped a single back up the middle to bring Washington home. Two batters later, a single by Bo Coolen scored Cherry and Dominic Canzone, and prompted the Huskers to bring in their closer, Chad Luensmann.

Shea Murray greeted him with a two-run double, scoring Coolen and Jacob Barnwell, and Washington followed that with another hit, this time a two-run single, making it an 11-9 ballgame.

But the huge deficit was just too much to overcome. Luis Alvarado worked around a leadoff single by Cherry to toss a scoreless ninth and secure the save.

Ohio State now stands 5-10 in conference play, and with just nine games left on the Big Ten schedule, has seen its conference tournament hopes diminish to nearly nothing.

Cherry had a big day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in, while Washington had a pair of hits and three RBIs of his own. Canzone also extended his hitting streak to nine games as every Buckeye starter had at least one hit.

Had the Ohio State bats gotten going earlier, or the pitching staff been able to hold Nebraska’s offense down early, it could have been a much different outcome.

Reece Calvert, who had looked much more comfortable his last two starts after massive struggles early in the season, got pounded. Nebraska scored five runs against the big right-hander in 1.2 innings. Calvert allowed three hits, walked two, and hit a pair of batters as the Huskers buried the scarlet and gray under a barrage of runs early.

Nebraska scored three runs off Calvert in the first and two more in the second. Ben Miller accounted for three of those with a two-run single and a bases loaded hit by pitch.

Seth Kinker came out of the bullpen to relieve Calvert and settled things down. The junior side-armer put up zeroes in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Meanwhile, the Huskers sent lefty Jake Meyers to the bump, and he cruised through the Ohio State lineup. Pulling double duty as the leadoff man, Meyers tossed seven innings of one-run ball, scattering six hits, and went 1-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.

The Buckeyes finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a Cherry triple over the center fielder’s head, scoring Tre’ Gantt and making it a 5-1 ballgame. But things would unravel in the next inning.

Joe Stoll relieved Kinker in the seventh and walked the first two batters he faced, throwing only two strikes and forcing Ohio State to go to the bullpen yet again. Kyle Michalik entered and couldn’t keep Nebraska from scoring. An error at short by Washington loaded the bases, and a hit by pitch brought a run home for the second time in the game.

Jake Schleppenbach followed that with a single to right-center that brought two more runs home and pushed the Huskers’ advantage to 8-1. Thomas Waning would relieve Michalik and yield a two-run double to Scott Schreiber.

Schleppenbach added an RBI double in the eighth against Waning, and the rout was seemingly on. The Buckeyes didn’t give up, which is a moral victory of sorts, but moral victories mean nothing in the standings.

Things only get tougher from here on out for Ohio State. Consensus national top-ten Texas Tech will visit Columbus this week for a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday before the Buckeyes hit the road to play nationally-ranked Michigan in Ann Arbor next weekend.

The receiver looks to stay healthy and make an impact at the next level.

Former Ohio State wide-receiver Corey Smith was claimed as an undrafted free agent by the Cincinnati Bengals after being passed up in the 2017 NFL Draft. After a medical redshirt was granted to Smith for the 2015 season, he was unable to find a spot in the WR rotation last season. Despite incredible skill and a 4-star reputation when he arrived, Smith was never able to make a lasting impact for the Buckeyes.

As a junior college transfer from East Mississippi Community College, the Akron-native arrived in Columbus as the No. 3 ranked junior college receiver after pulling in 51 receptions for 733 yards as a sophomore.

At 6’1, 190 lbs., Smith ran a 4.68 40-time at Ohio State’s pro day, and showed well enough late in the evaluation process to begin to pick up interest from scouts and analysts. Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller ranked Smith as the 41st best wide-receiver in the draft, and the 261st player overall.

How good was Smith in college?

In his freshman year, Smith had 28 receptions for 438 yards and two touchdowns while playing for Grand Rapids (Mich.) Community College. However, despite the team going undefeated, the school discontinued the program after the season, which necessitated Smith’s transfer to East Mississippi.

In Mississippi, Smith was an instrumental part of his team winning the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges’ north division championship.

In the 2014 season in Columbus, Smith played in 14 games, recording 20 catches for 255 yards, including a season-long 47-yard reception in the National Championship game against Oregon.

However, with only five catches for 62 yards in four games in 2015, he suffered a leg injury against Indiana, ending his season. A wrist injury kept him off of the field for much of the 2016 campaign as well. Playing in only four games, his biggest contribution was against Clemson, where he snagged a pair of catches for 27 yards.
