Best of Week 7: Ohio State visits Nebraska in interdivision clash

A slate of six games looms on this Saturday. And there is some marquee appeal. At the top of the list is Ohio State’s trip to Nebraska. Northwestern’s game at Maryland also is interesting. NU may be the top team in the West, while the Terps are on the rise and looking to make a statement.

Is a Buckeye pledge close to flipping to the Tide?

Recruiting is always changing, and things aren’t over until a prospect signs a national letter of intent with a school.

Verbally committed to Ohio State since late April, news broke over the weekend that newly ranked five-star prospect Brenton Cox would take a trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala. and check out what Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide have to offer n and off the football field.

When a recruit is pledged to attend a program and makes plans to visit another school, of course fans are going to freak out a bit. Before Buckeye Nation could make too much an uproar, Ari Wasserman of Cleveland.com caught up with the Georgia native to get his view on the situation.

"I mean, it doesn't matter because I'm done with recruiting, I'm straight. I was just going just to go. ... I'm not looking to decommit or go to Alabama. I'm going to Ohio State," Cox stated to Wasserman.

Cox isn’t the first OSU commit to ever take a visit. While it’s becoming a very common thing in new age recruiting, and some players end up having a change of heart, all signs look to currently point towards Brenton staying with the Buckeyes, who he spurned his home-state and one time favorite Georgia Bulldogs for.

Although things could always switch up, remember these are just kids with a once in a lifetime opportunity. When you were a teenager, wouldn’t you want to mingle with some of the best in the business? I for one know I would’ve, and I think you would’ve too.

Gill shows off his speed

After an injury, some athletes lose a step. From the looks of things, that’s not the case for Ohio State class of 2018 verbal commit Jaelen Gill of Westerville South.

Gill, a four-star running back, who could slide perfectly into the H-Back role for the Buckeyes, showed that he’s put his broken leg he sustained last season in the rearview mirror at the Under Armour illSpeed Final in Baltimore, Md. on Sunday afternoon.

A camp that puts some of the fastest, most athletic players in the country up against each other in a matter of different drills, Gill, who has also been invited to participate in Nike’s The Opening and the Rivals 5-star Challenge this summer, proved he’s back to full-health once again by winning the whole event.

The depth at Linebacker at Ohio State is a very talented group, but with three consecutive hauls at that very position, Ohio State is stocked full of potential starters and impact players at every position. Teradja Mitchell, prospect out of Virginia pulled the trigger for Coach Davis’ position group and joins another stellar Ohio State recruiting class that is only trailing Miami. Mitchell is an aggressive, hard-hitting Linebacker with the ability to play zone coverage. Mitchell excels at diagnosing the play and sticking his nose into the backfield. He plays with anger and hits so hard, the ball carrier is usually fumbling after contact. He is a throwback Linebacker that can plug-and-play if needed, but if he needs to redshirt, he will if it helps the team and Mitchell grow as a player.

Mitchell is supposedly 110% committed at this time and he will most likely be the one to start a chain reaction to get other blue-chippers to join the Ohio State class of 2018. He is already starting on social media in conversations with notable recruits like Micah Parsons and Carman Jackson, who Ohio State really want. We will have to see, but for now, we should enjoy this win over Florida State. It is likely others will come between now and National Signing Day, but we will see.

Johnny Carson (R.I.P.)

Ever see the show with the talking dog? Sadly, cannot find a video clip of it, though I did find this post. Not sure it's about the same dog, as I remember the owner being an older woman.

Answer by PoodlePup

OK I'm going to sound like I'm crazy, but YES! When I was 13 I lived near a man with Samoyeds who talked. He had these dogs on the Johnny Carson Show. You know, the one Jay Leno just gave up and Conan took over. LOL..Yep I'm old. The dogs name were Bing Crosby and Yukon Cornelius. I used to groom these dogs for him and take them for walks. he explained that all dogs could learn to do it and some did it naturally. Yukon did not inherit the ability from his father Bing, but he did learn and they understood questions. Mr Percle said that Bing was able to do more and that his ability was like throwing your voice. I know he wasn't doing it because when Bing was bathed once he looked at me and a friend and said "good bye" and went home! When I first told my mother about these dogs I was grounded for 2 weeks for lying!Mr Percle was an appliance repair man. When my mom's washer broke, she went to Mr. Percle. When she came out of the shop she apologized to me and said she had talk to the dogs and they answered her. I STILL remind her of being grounded about that.

http://www.answers.com/Q/Are_talking_dogs_real

Anyway, they had a dog on, and everybody was laughing it up because this silly person was crazy enough to think her dog could talk. Then the little mutt looked up and said "hello" as clearly as any human. The way I remember it, Carson's jaw dropped, he threw his arms in the air and swirled backwards around on his chair while the audience screamed. Best. Reaction. Ever.

Spoiler: the passing game has been an issue.

I’ve had the pleasure of tackling some incredibly important Ohio State coaching questions over the past two years. Does Urban Meyer typically blow teams out more than Jim Tressel did (kind of)? Who has had the best five-year start among Meyer, Tressel, and Woody Hayes (King Urban)? Today, we tackle another question only reserved for the slowest periods of the off-season: how has the look and efficiency of Ohio State’s offense changed from Tressel to Meyer?

With the help of Sports-Reference.com, I compiled the Ohio State offense’s per game averages from 2001 through 2016. The worst figures are in red and the best are in green. Without further ado, Ohio State’s offensive production from the last 16 seasons:

Ohio State Per Game Offensive Statistics 2001 - 2016

Bellisari.jpg

Let’s establish some takeaways...

Ohio State threw the ball more last season than ever before. In fact, it really wasn’t close. Ohio State averaged 31.5 pass attempts per game in 2016 and the next closest year was 2003 (28.2 pass attempts per game).

2014 marked the most productive passing season in recent Buckeyes history. That season saw 16-year highs in: passing yards per game, passing touchdowns per game, and yards per attempt.

Incredibly, 2014 was also nearly the most productive rushing season in recent Buckeyes history. The Zeke-led ground attack averaged 264.5 rushing yards per game along with 2.7 touchdowns on an average of 5.7 yards per carry. Still, this wasn’t enough to top the 2013 Buckeyes, who averaged an absurd 308.6 rushing yards per game with 3.2 touchdowns on an average of 6.8 (!!!) yards per carry.

Ohio State’s passing efficiency last season was their second-worst performance of the past 16 years. Only (gulp) the Luke Fickell-led 2011 Buckeyes averaged fewer yards per pass attempt. That’s right, Ohio State just made the final four with an offense that was barely more adept at throwing the ball than a Buckeyes team that once threw four total passes in an entire game against Illinois. At just 6.79 yards per attempt, Barrett and the Buckeyes failed to consistently pick up big yardage through the air. Perhaps this inability to control the air spilled over to the rush game, where the Buckeyes averaged 5.5 yards per rush — their lowest total since 2012.

The 2005 Troy Smith/Ted Ginn Jr./Santonio Holmes passing attack was lethal. Aside from averaging just 1.5 passing touchdowns per game, this group posted top-three marks in yards per game, completion percentage, and yards per attempt.

The worst rushing offense of Urban Meyer’s tenure was still better than Jim Tressel’s best rushing offense. The 2012 Buckeyes couldn’t make much happen through the air, and their ground game was fairly underwhelming as well compared to later years. Still, they gained 242 rushing yards per game with 3.1 touchdowns on an average of 5.2 yards per attempt — marks that would all be highs during Tressel’s 10 seasons.

Terrelle Pryor was really good in 2010. Not only did he post the highest completion percentage in the sample, but Pryor’s average of 8.53 yards per attempt was good for the fourth-highest mark. Meaning: Pryor was accurately shredding defenses down the field. It’s not a coincidence that Pryor had his lowest quarterback rating of the season during Ohio State’s lone loss to Wisconsin in 2010.

Let’s take another look at this data, but this time we’ll sort by who was coaching. I left Fickell out of this exercise since we’ve already spent too much time revisiting the (mostly) living hell that was the 2011 football season.

Urban Meyer/Jim Tressel Per Game Offensive Statistics 2001 - 2016

meyer_vs_tressel.jpg

More takeaways...

Urban-led offenses have run more plays, picked up more yards, and scored more points than Tressel-led offenses. Who would’ve thought! Still, the disparity between the play count wasn't always so lopsided, as the Pryor-led offenses in 2009 and 2010 ran a similar amount of plays as some of Meyer's slower offenses.

Tressel surprisingly led a more explosive passing offense. It’s very close, but Tressel-led offenses averaged slightly more yards per attempt than Meyer-led offenses. Meyer’s teams have completed passes at a higher rate and scored more touchdowns, but the idea that Tressel never pushed the ball down the field clearly isn’t true.

Urban knows how to run the football. We discussed earlier how Meyer's worst rush offense was better than Tressel's best rush offense, but there's reason to believe this was due more to scheme than anything. Meyer has always utilized a quarterback that is a threat on the ground, while Tressel often leaned on running backs and seldom designed runs for his quarterback ... until 2010. After unleashing Pryor against the Oregon Ducks in the 2010 Rose Bowl, Tressel went all in with a spread offense designed around Pryor’s strengths for ensuing season. The result was Tressel's best rushing attack yet, as Pryor, Dan Herron, and Brandon Saine spearheaded an attack that averaged 220.1 rushing yards with 2.1 touchdowns per game on an average of 5.2 yards per carry.

During the course of a football season fans will often overreact to an issue that really isn’t as bad as it seems. Yes, Ohio State's rushing attack wasn't as good in 2014 as it was in 2013. As it turned out, the Barrett-Zeke attack was still the second-best rushing offense of the last 16 years.

With that said, sometimes fans hit the nail on the head. Watching Ohio State’s passing offense over the past two seasons has been an emotional roller coaster. There’s no denying that Barrett is among the best quarterbacks to ever play for Ohio State, but there’s also no denying that the Buckeyes’ pass offense has hit rock bottom in the Meyer era. We’ve seen the heights the offense can sore with an explosive passing offense, here’s to hoping Kevin Wilson and company can restore the Buckeyes’ aerial attack.

The Buckeyes are already making waves at the next level.

The 2017 NFL Draft is now over, and players are starting to put in work with their new teams at the next level. As the start of OTAs and offseason programs get underway, several former Ohio State studs are already showing off.

How are the Buckeye rookies doing?

There were nine Buckeyes added to rosters this spring, through either the draft or signed as an undrafted free agent, including: Noah Brown (Cowboys), Gareon Conley (Raiders), Pat Elflein (Vikings), Craig Fada (Texans), Malik Hooker (Colts), Cameron Johnston (Eagles), Marshon Lattimore (Saints), Raekwon McMillan (Dolphins), Curtis Samuel (Panthers), Corey Smith (Bengals), and Dontre Wilson (Chargers).

Offensive lineman Pat Elflein just inked his rookie deal with the Vikings, and after being invited for a tryout with the Texans, linebacker Craig Fada signed a free agent deal with the team in late-April. Other undrafted free agents to sign with a team include Cam Johnston — who has a good shot of competing for playing time his rookie season with the Eagles — and Corey Brown signed with the Bengals after taking part in a local pro day workout.

Working out on the sideline, Malik Hooker still hasn’t been able to fully participate in the Colts’ offseason program, as he recovers from surgery in January, but is expected to see a lot of playing time his rookie season. The same can’t be said of Dontre Wilson, who despite being invited to tryout for the Chargers, ultimately never signed with the team after a doctor expressed concern over his foot — a lingering issue for Wilson throughout his time at Ohio State. Wilson was omitted from the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine, with his only NFL interview coming at Ohio State’s pro day workout.

That feeling of being left out really hitting me smh

— Dontre (TRE) Wilson (@treydayy_) May 24, 2017

After sexual assault allegations days before the draft, Gareon Conley fell down teams’ draft boards, but not completely. The Raiders ended up taking a risk with the Buckeye, and are already seeing the benefits. Conley is as dedicated as ever to his performance on the field, and despite all Raider rookies having to earn their way to first and second-team, he’s impressed his new coaches.

Oakland head coach Jack Del Rio spoke about Conley, according to RaidersWire, saying “He’s really more about business. He’s a student of the game. He’s a guy that wants to know. Very bright and is picking up things quick.”

— Michael Gehlken (@GehlkenNFL) May 30, 2017

Another impressive secondary player out of Ohio State last season was Marshon Lattimore. Drafted by the Saints, where he’ll join former teammates Michael Thomas and Vonn Bell, the cornerback is another one who is trying to earn his keep with a new team. Despite an unimpressive first round of OTAs, the thing that stands out to coaches most is Lattimore’s desire to learn and improve — which is already an impressive feat for a rookie.

“He’s hungry as heck. He says all the time, ‘Coach, I need to work on this technique; I need to work on this,’ ” secondary coach Aaron Glenn said, according to The Advocate. “To me, just his eagerness to learn. He didn’t come in as a rookie thinking, ‘I know it all.’ He came in as a rookie and said, ‘I need to learn.’ That’s the good thing about him.”

Offensive weapon Curtis Samuel had a chance to get acclimated to the Panthers training facility during rookie minicamp, and is soaking up all the advice and experience from veteran players — specifically quarterback Cam Newton. The Hback turned wide receiver said it’s great having a guy like Newton taking the time to offer insight along the way.

"I feel like I did OK for my first OTA," Samuel said after his first OTA. "I want to let the game come to me, be patient and be as productive as I can. I just want to make the most of this opportunity."

Anything new with 2nd year NFL players out of Ohio State?

Most of the record-breaking class of 2016 out of Ohio State is still with the their first NFL team, with the exception of Tyvis Powell. The safety was released at the beginning of the Seahawks playoff run, but was signed by his hometown Cleveland Browns just after the season wrapped up.

— Tyvis Powell (@1Tyvis) May 31, 2017

Once again, Joey Bosa drew some offseason ire when he didn’t show up for voluntary workouts early this spring, but was still working out with his trainer in preparation of being fully engaged during OTAs and training camp.

Ezekiel Elliott has — as expected -- become the newest running back to take over the league. Despite being in town for the start of offseason training, he was the passenger in another car accident which kept him sidelined for the first round of drills. At this point, the running back should probably just forego driving or riding in cars altogether.

The full second-year class includes: Eli Apple (Giants), Vonn Bell (Saints), Joey Bosa (Chargers), Taylor Decker (Lions), Ezekiel Elliott (Cowboys), Cardale Jones (Bills), Darron Lee (Jets), Jalin Marshall (Jets), Braxton Miller (Texans), Joshua Perry (Chargers), Tyvis Powell (Browns), Michael Thomas (Saints), Nick Vannett (Seahawks), and Adolphus Washington (Bills).

Now heading into their second season in the league, expectations have been raised by this bar-setting group.

Who is suiting up for a new NFL team this season?

Free agency brought several roster shakeups across the league, but specifically for a group of Buckeyes. Players like Corey ‘Philly’ Brown (CAR→BUF), Ted Ginn Jr. (CAR→NO), Johnathan Hankins (NYG→IND), Terrelle Pryor Sr. (CLE→WAS), and John Simon (HOU -> IND) all found themselves moving ahead of organized team activities.

One of the breakout receivers last season was Terrelle Pryor, who after officially making the transition from quarterback to wideout had his first 1,000-plus season. He was expected to stay in Cleveland in 2017, but Pryor and the team were on two different pages when it came to amount and duration of a new contract.

Instead, Pryor signed a one-year deal with Washington, and is hoping to contribute enough to earn a longterm deal with the organization. He’s spent the past two months working out with his new quarterback Kirk Cousins — who is trying to get used to having such a big target downfield.

“I’m bigger and my body movement is different than guys he’s played with,” Pryor said, according to ESPN. “So the movement and how I run, it’s deceptive. It doesn’t look like I’m really flying, but I’m flying. Different things like that he has to feel out, and he will. I have to keep getting better with the offense and the nuance of the routes, and I will.”

Former teammates at Ohio State, Hankins and Simon are also on the move, joining Jack Mewhort in Indy for a Silver Bullet reunion that should be feared throughout the league. The three are familiar with each other not just on the field, but off, and could make a big impact on the chemistry of the Colts’ defense.

Happy to have @BigTimeHank on my side again. Can't wait to relive college practice nightmares every day in practice this year @johnesimon51

Finally, the Panthers are no longer one of the more Buckeye-loaded teams in the NFL, with the departure of both Philly Brown and Ginn. Instead Brown is now on the receiving end of Cardale Jones passes in Buffalo, and Ginn is working downfield with Michael Thomas down in New Orleans.

There’s still plenty of offseason left, but with 51 players out of Ohio State on an active NFL roster, the 2017 season is gearing up to be an exciting one.

Ohio State’s newest linebacker commit is the next Raekwon McMillan.

Urban Meyer was able to infiltrate Virginia and successfully convince Teradja Mitchell, the No. 2 inside linebacker in the country (No. 1 player from Virginia), to play up north for the Ohio State Buckeyes. As mentioned, Ohio State had to battle the likes of Florida State, Alabama, Clemson, LSU and Michigan for his services, and they prevailed.

Mitchell is the prototypical, hard-hitting inside linebacker who excels against the run. On tape, Mitchell resembles a previous five-star inside linebacker recruit under Urban Meyer: Raekwon McMillan. Like McMillan, Mitchell possesses great instincts in the run game, and hits like a Mack Truck. He has the football IQ to recognize the play, fight through the rubbish and meet the ball carrier right away. When he meets the ball carrier, he wraps up and drives through the body. Mitchell is an extremely violent tackler who makes his presence felt in the run game.

Like McMillan coming out of high school, Mitchell does not have a ton of experience in the passing game, which makes it look like he’s vulnerable in that area. In regards to Raekwon, contrary to popular belief, the former Buckeye excelled on all three downs and the superb Ohio State defensive coaching staff put him in the right place to succeed. The passing game will be a knock on Mitchell when he arrives on campus, but as an underclassmen, Greg Schiano will utilize his plus-instincts to blitz and rush the passer. Right now it’s tough to see how he would matchup one-on-one with an elite college running back or tight end, but he does possess sideline-to-sideline speed which would indicate an ability to cover at this level. If there was an area to keep an eye on during Mitchell’s senior year, it would be his pass coverage against backs and tight ends.

At 6-foot-2, 232 pounds, Mitchell is already built like a college linebacker. Of course, after some time with Mickey Marotti and the Ohio State weight training program, Mitchell will be rock solid and ready to contribute right away. Like Raekwon McMillan, Teradja Mitchell is a day-one contributor on special teams and would be able to make his presence felt as a true freshman on defense. Since he would be a likely candidate to arrive early on campus, expect Mitchell to catch the eye of Greg Schiano and find a way to implement a role for him on defense.

With Chris Worley ready to depart after the 2017 season, the Buckeyes were able to reload and land the next great middle linebacker at Ohio State.
