LGHL Big Ten reportedly considering 20-game basketball schedule

A bigger basketball schedule could solve some problems for the Big Ten.

The current Big Ten basketball schedule doesn’t make everybody happy. It means that some major rivalry games, like Indiana-Purdue, Ohio State-Michigan or Michigan-Michigan State, might only happen once a year. Depending on how the home and homes shake out, there could be a massive strength of schedule difference between squads. And Big Ten expansion has diluted conference strength, messing with RPI scores.

One possible solution? Just play more Big Ten conference games. And according to ESPN, the Big Ten is considering it. At least, according to Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo.

From ESPN:

"I personally see us going to a 20-game schedule," Tom Izzo told ESPN on Monday. "I don't think there's any question it's going to happen -- and I'm not overly against it."

The Big Ten added two conference games and went from 16 to 18 back in 2007-08.

Delany said the coaches haven't voted on whether to go from an 18- to a 20-game conference slate yet. He said the logistics will have to be figured out, especially with recovery time for the players.

"If we do it, we need to present it in a healthy way," Delany said.

Two more Big Ten games (the league plays 18 right now) means two fewer non-conference games, although few Buckeye fans would complain if that meant two fewer shots at Jackson State or Florida Atlantic. Conference play would also start earlier, like in December (which it will this season), a time of year mostly full of bad non-conference games.

Two extra games could be a double edged sword. Not every major league plays that many games, leading to similar debates about comparing resumes that college football experiences. Depending on the luck of the draw, those extra games could hypothetically be against say, Rutgers and Nebraska, which could actually hurt a computer profile rather than help.

But I think most fans would rather watch Ohio State play any Big Ten team than most non-conference opponents. We’ll see if this actually ends up happening.

First the Seahawks, then the Browns, the Buckeye is now with the Colts.

After some bouncing around throughout his first year in the NFL, former Ohio State captain Tyvis Powell has found yet another city to call home. The safety was signed by the Indianapolis Colts, joining a slew of other Buckeye defenders, including rookie Malik Hooker, Johnathan Hankins, Jack Mewhort and John Simon.

Things have not gone according to plan for the former Buckeye, who was initially expected to be among the historic 2015 NFL draft class out of Ohio State. Instead, seven rounds of picks went by without Powell hearing his name. It wasn’t that teams weren’t interested; several called immediately following the draft to get the safety signed as an undrafted free agent.

Ultimately, he chose to join the Legion of Boom in Seattle, with some of the leagues most notable secondary players: Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor and Earl Thomas. Powell ended up seeing more playing time on special teams than on defense, and also spent weeks pinging between active and inactive status on game days.

Despite being released before the Seahawks’ first game of the postseason, Powell still maintains a close — and funny — relationship with Sherman, who could offer some valuable experience to the young player trying to navigate a rocky start in the NFL.

u know where to find us Rook!

— Richard Sherman (@RSherman_25) February 6, 2017

It was only a few weeks after being released by Seattle, that Powell was signed by his hometown Browns. Having the Buckeye suiting up once again in Ohio was a good storyline, but didn’t last long. The Browns ended up releasing Powell on June 9th, just hours before he was set to throw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Cleveland Indians game. The Buckeye kept his commitment, despite the inherent awkwardness that ensued.

Things haven’t exactly been smooth sailing for the fan-favorite Buckeye thus far in his NFL endeavors, but he’s got at least one more shot to make his talents known and utilized at the next level.

One of the top offensive linemen in the 2019 recruiting class was on Ohio State’s campus Monday (and he already wants to come back).

One of the key reasons Urban Meyer has vaulted himself into elite status when it comes to recruiting is his ability to recognize talent early. Meyer and the Ohio State football staff is hoping to be at it again with 2019 offensive tackle Michael Tarquin (Belleview, FL / Belleview).

The Buckeyes hosted Tarquin Monday and it appears the visit couldn’t have gone better. To this point, Tarquin has been projected to stay at home and continue his football career playing for the Miami Hurricanes. However, after today’s visit, the four-star junior may have found a home away from home in Columbus, Ohio.

Tarquin took to Twitter following the visit and said he had a “fantastic” time on campus. However, the blue-chip OT didn’t stop there, as he said that he wanted to make a return visit to the University.

Fantastic visit at Ohio State, can't wait to come back! Go Buckeyes! pic.twitter.com/NvKjCVtA6e

— Michael Tarquin (@Mike_Tarquin70) June 12, 2017

Tarquin is a rising OT and therefore, the Buckeyes will have their hands full in winning him over. Despite just two years of high school football under his belt, he has acquired 15 scholarship offers from schools like Miami, Florida State, Clemson, Arizona State, Michigan, Michigan State, Louisville, Auburn and Tennessee.

While Miami is still leading the pack in Tarquin’s recruitment, Meyer and the Buckeyes became legitimate contenders for his services following the visit. If the program is able to get him back on campus, they could easily jump into the driver’s seat for his recruitment.

Ohio State set to host multiple elite recruits today

On top of hosting an important recruit yesterday, the Ohio State coaching staff is attacking the recruiting world at full force this week. The program is holding a one-day camp today and some of the country’s top recruits will be in attendance.

While there is no official visitor list, more than a dozen recruits are reportedly planning on making the trek to Columbus today. Jeremy Birmingham of Landof10.com currently has a running list of recruits reportedly attending the camp, including some big names from the 2018, 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes.

The biggest name on his list is 2018 four-star linebacker K'Vaughan Pope (Dinwiddie, VA / Dinwiddie County). Pope has been connected to the Ohio State program for the majority of his recruitment and is the favorite to land him with 75-percent of the 247CrystalBall predictions.

Pope is one of the top interior linebackers in the country and was on Ohio State’s campus back in April. Following this visit, the Buckeyes gained even more steam in Pope’s recruitment. So much so, that there is a real possibility that he could be on commitment watch today if his time at the camp goes well.

Also, on the list of visitors attending today’s camp are some of the best from the 2019 recruiting class:

  • Rising outside linebacker target Kyi Wright (Farrell, PA / Farrell)

The Buckeyes assistant coaching staff is starting to take shape.

With a new head coach in place, the assistant coaching lineup for Ohio State basketball is in flux. During his presser today, Chris Holtmann said not to expect anything official immediately, but that doesn’t mean news isn’t starting to trickle out.

According to Jon Rothstein, two more Butler assistants are likely to join Holtmann in Columbus, including a very key name.

Terry Johnson & Ryan Pedon are expected to join Chris Holtmann's staff at OSU as long as BU finalizes deal with LaVall Jordan, per a source.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) June 12, 2017

Buckeye fans might recognize Ryan Pedon at this point. Thought to be the architect behind the highest ranked Butler recruiting class ever, Pedon is also very much a Columbus guy (he’s from Bexley and played basketball at Wooster). Pedon has also coached all over the state, including jobs at Toledo, Miami (OH) and Kent State, along with a stint at Illinois under John Groce.

Pedon was also thought to be a candidate to be Butler’s new head coach, a position now filled by Milwaukee head coach LaVall Jordan.

Johnson had coached at Auburn and IPFW (his alma mater), and also served as a director of basketball operations at Butler.

If both coaches are coming, it’s clear that Holtmann plans to double down on an Ohio and Indiana-centric recruiting strategy, while continuing the brain-trust that was so successful at Butler.

If the Buckeyes are serious about “closing the borders” of Ohio, this is probably a good start.

LGHL Joey Bosa and Ezekiel Elliott are already among the NFL’s best players

They may have just finished their rookie seasons, but their impact is here to stay.

“Bosa was utterly dominant in two seasons of PFF college grading, so nobody was less surprised than we were when he hit the ground running in the NFL in exactly the same way.”

-Sam Monson, Pro Football Focus

Football analysis site Pro Football Focus recently had high praise for two former Buckeyes in its ranking of the league’s 50 best overall players heading into the preseason. The ratings use advanced stats to compare an individual player against others at his particular position group. Chief among them were two rookies in running back Ezekiel Elliott and defensive end Joey Bosa, both of whom came off monster seasons in 2016. Wide receiver Michael Thomas, who earned a spot as a rookie on PFF’s “Top 101 players from 2016” list, was not included in the top-50 list.

Bosa earned the No. 13 spot on the list, despite missing the first four games of the season, and is the highest-rated rookie of the group. Bosa recorded 59 pressures in 12 games for the Chargers--the most by any player over a 12-game span. In addition to playing on both the right and left sides as a defensive end, Bosa showed his versatility lining up at outside linebacker as well, and PFF praised him as “one of the league’s most dominant defenders.” While he came in behind other top edge defenders like Khalil Mack (No. 6) and Vonn Miller (No. 7), Bosa can continue to improve by playing a full season in his second year in the league.

Elliott came in at the No. 45 spot in the rankings--the third running back behind Le'Veon Bell (No. 11) and David Johnson (N0. 15). While Elliott had one of the league’s best offensive lines blocking for him, including three linemen who made the top-50 list ahead of him, there is no doubting his dominance in running the ball (something Ohio State fans are already familiar with). Elliott’s 1,631 rushing yards totaled more than any other running back in the league--by at least 300 yards. He also averaged just under three yards after contact, which is a testament to his power-running ability.

“I had a passion for football, but it wasn’t meant to be. Now, acting feels like what I’m supposed to be doing. I’ve been blessed, but it took awhile.”

-Former Ohio State running back Maurice Hall, via Ken Gordon, The Columbus Dispatch

By this point, Buckeye Nation is familiar with former running back Eddie George’s stage-acting career--quite the successful post-football occupation for the former pro. Now, another former running back is finding success in his own acting career. Maurice Hall, who played at Ohio State from 2001-04 and who was a key part of the 2002 national championship team, is returning to Columbus this weekend for a screening of his film “Baker’s Man,” which he wrote, co-directed and starred in.

Hall began work on Baker’s Man in 2014, raising money through crowd-funding. The film is a romantic comedy that tells the tale of a wealthy philanthropist who provides grants to struggling businesses. The protagonist ultimately falls for the owner of a bakery who had been seeking a grant. The movie screened at the Gateway Film Center over the weekend, but can also be purchased through iTunes prior to the DVD release later this month.

After football (Hall was waived by the San Diego Chargers shortly after the 2005 NFL Draft), Hall worked in broadcasting in Columbus, sparking his interest in acting as it enabled him to be creative and “create something out of nothing.” While things got off to a slow start after his move to Los Angeles, Hall’s acting career finally broke through when he got a role on the Mindy Project in 2013. Since then, he has appeared in shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds and NCIS: New Orleans. Also in 2013, Hall married Jeanine Jennings, an emergency medicine physician in L.A., and the pair have two young daughters.

Those around Hall credit his work ethic for creating his success--the same work ethic that guided him on the football field. He still takes acting lessons and “works tirelessly at his craft,” according to a former teammate.

“You always have to practice,” said Hall.

“The Buckeye passing game seemed to make some strides in the spring game, but it’s hard to gauge real progress on a single intersquad scrimmage.”

-Dan Murphy, ESPN

The often-dismal passing attack of Ohio State last year was a key driver in the offseason moves that saw Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day join the Ohio State coaching staff as co-offensive coordinators. Now, the question remains if quarterback J.T. Barrett and his corps of young receivers will be able to live up to much higher expectations heading into the fall. The group showed promise in the spring game, but with fall camp starting soon, coaches will be able to better identify the issues that need to be worked on before the start of the season.

This season, Barrett has the likes of Johnnie Dixon, K.J. Hill. Terry McLaurin and Binjimen Victor. The crew collectively had some exciting moments last season, but accounted for few yards and just four touchdowns. With the loss of Curtis Samuel and Noah Brown, last season’s top receivers, to the NFL Draft, the younger receivers already had a tall order just to replace them. Barrett, the constant on offense for the past three seasons, has the rest of the summer to improve his passing game and to get in sync with his receivers.

On the other side of the ball, the secondary boasts a number of new starters who look to replace Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker and Gareon Conley, all of whom were taken in the first round of April’s draft. Damon Webb is the lone returning starter heading into the fall. However, this situation is nothing new for the Buckeyes, who just last year lost Eli Apple, Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell, leaving Conley as the sole returning starter in 2016. Given new talent like Denzel Ward and Damon Arnette, the Buckeyes should be able to have time to get experience in the secondary given the support from the loaded defensive front-seven.
