Fandom isn’t binary. Fandom isn’t even the same from one family member to the next.

Maybe you were born into it. Maybe it was born into you.

No matter why you consider yourself an Ohio State devotee, there’s no better time than now for us to better get to know each other. Gather around the digital campfire and let’s talk about why we love us some Buckeyes.

Whether you’re from Ohio State, fell in love with Troy Smith’s play style as a kid, or anything in between, we want to know: what makes you bleed Scarlet and Gray?

Be sure to let us know in the Land-Grant Holy Land FanPosts why you live to love the Bucks. Who knows, you might even win something.

Luke Zimmermann

I’m not an Ohio native. Pretty far from it. My only childhood memory of the Buckeyes is seeing a friend’s Toledo grad uncle give Jake Plummer the finger through the TV at the end of the ‘97 Rose Bowl.

I was on the school paper in high school and after a few scholastic competitions, I had some scholarship offers from the likes of OU and Bowling Green.

Being from Texas, I thought heck, might as well see what these Ohio schools are all about. And Columbus seemed to make sense as a home base somewhat equidistant between the two.

After checking out both schools, my parents convinced me I’d regret it if I never checked out what Ohio State, not too far from our downtown C-bus hotel, had to offer.

It’s hard to explain what I saw, but even visiting in February, it was love at first sight. I was never quite able to shake the idea that Ohio State was where I was supposed to end up.

Flash forward five years and two degrees later and I regret nothing about my decision. I may have electively chosen to be a Buckeye instead of being born into it, but I’d never change what it’s helped me become.

Alexis Chassen

Columbus born, Buckeye bred. I’m the first one in my family to attend Ohio State, but was surrounded by Buckeye fandom my whole life. The tipping point for me from fan to ‘bleeder of scarlet and gray’ was the 2002 national championship. It was that game that influenced me to apply to OSU, and the rest is tailgating history.

Caleb Houser

Grew up with both sides of the family being born and raised in Ohio. On Saturdays, Ohio State football was the theme. Grew to love OSU even more due to family being alums. Growing up in Michigan, Ohio State drew hated, but due to my roots, I embraced the hate and that gave me all the more reason to keep loving the Bucks. I couldn't get enough, so every aspect that went into the program and covering recruiting became a hobby and helped grow my love of OSU and OSU football even stronger.

Geoff Hammersley

Growing up, I rooted for the Buckeyes, mostly due to the fact that both my parents went to Ohio State. My dad and I would make the trip to Columbus each year for a football game, which varied from Youngstown State to watching the Buckeyes dismantle Michigan's title hopes in the Game of the Century. For college, Ohio State was always my No.1 choice — it was practically OSU or bust — and in 2016, I walked out of The Shoe with a degree.

Ohio State has given me some of the biggest (and most memorable) moments in my life. From seeing Troy Smith torch Michigan, to owning a Todd Boeckman jersey with the 2008 BCS title game patch stitched on (which I thought was the coolest thing ever) to broadcasting the 2015 national title over Ohio State student radio, my roots of being a Buckeye have only become stronger with time.

Brett Ludwiczak

Unlike those who were born in Ohio, I grew up in Western New York so my Buckeye fandom didn't come more until my teenage years. I was in high school looking at colleges and took a visit to Ohio State and after visiting the weekend of the 2002 Ohio State-Michigan game, I fell in love with Ohio State. September will mark 12 years that I have lived in Columbus, and even if I do move away some day, I'll always bleed Scarlet and Gray.

Max Littman

I'm a Buckeye fan because I was born in Columbus, and both my parents attended The Ohio State university along with my great uncle and great grandfather. Quite simply there was no other choice but becoming a fan so I did. Now as a student at Ohio State, I couldn't happier being a fan and my favorite fan moment is rushing the field after The Spot was good and Curtis' legs were better at the 2016 OSU-Michigan game.

Dan Vest

I imagine my story is a lot like a lot of others. Mom was a Buckeye graduate as were many of my uncles. While Saturdays might not have revolved around the Buckeyes growing up, we always caught the game. After high school I ended up going to Wright State for college. That first fall I attended 2002 Ohio State/Michigan game and put in my transfer to Ohio State the next day. Three years later I met my wife at Ohio State and nine years after that our son was born at the Ohio State Medical Center. It’s those sort of real-life connections to a place that make rooting for its team so much fun.

Meredith Hein

My dad is the biggest Buckeye I know. He roomed with Woody Hayes' kid at Ohio State in the 1960s, and has instilled Scarlet and Gray in my very soul — so much so that, during the 2002 National Championship Game, I missed Ken Dorsey's incomplete pass on 4th-and-1 because I was too nervous to watch. That love and level of support remains to this day, but at least now I can watch the whole game. Although I honestly still can't tell if blue and yellow go well together; I'm leaning towards no.

Christopher Jason

Coming from Beverly, MA, located next to Salem, MA (where Scoonie Penn played high school basketball), it might seem odd that I have an allegiance to Ohio State. It all started when I was roughly six years old, when my aunt and uncle moved to a suburb of Columbus. My family and I began driving out to Ohio annually to visit them. I started following the 1998 Ohio State football team obsessively and the basketball team (which featured Penn), and I was hooked right away.

Although our trips never aligned in the fall to see a game at The Shoe, my father bought us tickets to see Ohio State defeat Miami in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl. Since then, I was also able to witness a second title victory in person, when I attended the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship. Coming from New England where college football is irrelevant, the Buckeyes have, and will always hold my college football fandom.

Chuck McKeever

I'm a Buckeye fan because my parents, both upstate NYers, met in the laundry room at Nosker Hall in the late 70s as undergrads. They moved back to NY, but raised their kids in Scarlet and Gray so effectively that two of them went to Ohio State without really considering other options. (I only applied to two schools total.) From my first panic attack during the '97 Rose Bowl to the joy of the 2014 title season, it's been worth every second.

Colton Denning

Even though my atrocious grades kept me from even applying to Ohio State, my mother being born and raised in Ohio and then attending OSU is what first got me into being a fan. It's an awesome bond I get to share with her, and it's the coolest thing in the world when she says how much it means to her that I rep the scarlet and gray. From watching Maurice Clarett streak up the sideline against Texas Tech, to now writing and podcasting bad takes on the internet about the team, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Charles Doss

I was born at Ohio State Medical Center premature and with a collapsed lung. The least thing I could do was root for their sports teams after OSU doctors saved my life.

Harry Lyles Jr.

Despite being born in Atlanta, both my parents rooted for Ohio State, with my mom being from Cleveland and my dad working in Columbus for a number of years. The Buckeyes’ Sugar Bowl against Texas A&M in 1999 is one of the first sporting events I ever remember watching. Growing up in SEC country and getting tons of hate as one of the only Ohio State fans around only made my love for them grow even more, even after tough national championship losses to Florida and LSU. I didn’t attend Ohio State myself, but I grew up with it, and stuck with it.

Ben Martens

My people had no ties to Ohio or Ohio State; my folks moved to Cleveland from Chicago in 1979, and I was the first in the family to be born in the state. But I grew up surrounded by Ohio State diehards, generations of alumni, and kids who were “Buckeyes born and bred”. It seemed inevitable that this would influence my allegiance, but the person most responsible was Jimmy Jackson. I became an Ohio State hoops fanatic in the early 90s and everything followed from there. Seven years ago, I became an alumnus myself.

Dan Hessler

Growing up in with my parents, there was never an option as to if I would be a Buckeye fan or not. My mom, an Ohio Stater alum, is the biggest diehard Buckeye fan I know, even converting my father, who was a big Notre Dame fan until meeting her. While my mom was never one to paint her face, our house was always painted scarlet and grey growing up, no matter where we lived. At the place where my parents currently live, their entire basement is decked out in OSU memorabilia: they have original copies of the Columbus Dispatch’s front page from both national championship games hanging on the walls, a signed Chris Spielman jersey, an autographed football from the ‘02-’03 national championship team, and countless bobbleheads and posters. It’s safe to say Ohio State is a part of my family’s DNA.

Matt Torino

I went to Rutgers for undergrad and law school and you couldn't imagine a less exciting football team even when they were good. So imagine my surprise when I got into business school at Ohio State, when I'd never been further west than Pennsylvania. The culture, pride and unity that the OSU football team provide helped bring my class together and helped me feel a part of something that Rutgers never did. And winning a national title my first year at OSU sure didn't hurt.

Matt Brown

The Buckeyes are working to add more defensive prospects to their 2018 and 2019 classes.

Two snag Buckeye offers

As things sit today, Ohio State currently has 10 committed prospects in the fold for this year’s recruiting cycle. When browsing the list of elite names, you will run into just one defensive tackle. In fact, to this point, you’ll find just two defensive lineman in general: defensive end Brenton Cox and DT Taron Vincent.

On Wednesday, Ohio State took big steps to increase their chance of getting more defensive star prospects. The Buckeyes dropped an offer to ‘18 DT Tramel Walthour of Liberty County (GA).

Blessed to receive an offer from The Ohio State University! pic.twitter.com/pfMuYbPWbR

— Tramel Walthour (@WalthourTramel) May 24, 2017

For Buckeye fans, that program should be one that rings a bell. Back in 2014, the Scarlet and Gray reeled in Raekwon McMillan from that same school and it was undoubtedly one of the biggest pickups in the Urban Meyer-Ohio State era. Now three years later, McMillan is in camp with the Miami Dolphins looking to prove his worth as the franchise’s second round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

As for Walthour, he is a mammoth 6-foot-4, 277-pounder who is beginning to see his recruitment take off. Just hours after receiving an offer from the Buckeyes, the three-star prospect was also blessed with offers from both Arkansas and Auburn. Combine those three schools with Georgia, Purdue, Kansas State and a few other offers, and that will show you much more than his current ranking does. As of now, the 247Sports Crystal Ball for Walthour favors the local Bulldogs. So, if Ohio State wants to be the eventual landing spot for Hinesville native, they will have some catching up to do.

The other recipient of a Buckeye offer yesterday was ‘19 safety Daxton Hill from Booker T. Washington (OK).

Blessed to have received my 10 offer from Ohio State University!! pic.twitter.com/6nBEtGqt4W

— #DaxHill (@daxhill5) May 24, 2017

Despite the lone Crystal Ball prediction going to Mike Gundy and Oklahoma State, the 6-foot, 182-pounder already has some options under his belt. Hill has already received offers from programs like Michigan, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, TCU and Texas. It’s a fairly safe bet to say that Hill is going to be one of the more highly touted players in next year’s cycle and definitely one of the better players on the defensive side of the ball. The very early grade on Hill from 247Sports pegs him as the 29th overall player in the class, the second best safety, and the second highest graded player from Oklahoma.

Smith hits Georgia

Sticking to the script of next year’s cycle, Ohio State sent wide receivers coach Zach Smith down to Georgia on Wednesday, and one of his stops was to Frederica Academy in Saint Simons Island, Ga.

Thanks for coming by today @CoachZachSmith pic.twitter.com/kENZkV1Vfn

— Coach Alex Mathis (@alexmathis) May 24, 2017

Obviously, the two big names to look for here are ‘19 wide receiver Jashawn Sheffield and ‘19 athlete Jaylin Simpson. Both hold offers from OSU, but other big time programs like Florida State have entered the fray.

If you have been following the Buckeyes pursuit of these talented Knights, you would know that Ohio State is all-in on trying to get these two in Columbus, Ohio. Combining the fact that Smith visited on Wednesday, and quarterbacks coach Ryan Day checking on the two just 10 days ago, the Buckeyes are leaving no stone unturned.

With that being said, it looks like the Buckeyes are gonna primarily battle with Florida State in these recruitments — a battle that is becoming all too familiar within the past few years.

Retracing the Paths of My Uncles part 7

Two stories always emerged at Brandt family get togethers. especially those around Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The first story was that Aunt Rose bought one of those tiny, three-foot Christmas trees attached to a metal tree stand filled with God knows what chemicals intended to keep the tree alive or embalm it.

She mailed it in early November, in a box she stuffed with dry popcorn. Somehow the APO (Army Post Office) managed to get the tree to Uncle Cliff just as the 75th Division was entering the line of battle. Uncle Cliff, who was the family mechanical wizard, "liberated" a battery from the division motor pool and soon had the lights on the tree glowing in a company bunker, deep in the darkness of the Ardennes.

It was shortly after this that Uncle Cliff was shot in the leg - I don't know the circumstances, and he didn't receive a Purple Heart. Accident? Self Inflicted? There is no "line of duty investigation," or a courts martial summary. Only Uncle Cliff knows. But he was hospitalized and that leads to the second story.

Somehow, word got to Uncle Ray and he managed to get permission to take a jeep and visit Uncle Cliff.

That sounds like an ordinary event in civilian, peace-time terms. But this takes place in a disorganized, chaotic, battlefield, from two divisions who did not share an AO (Area of Operations), on roads that had been hammered by artillery, tanks, and traffic.

I grew up an isolate. My sister was eight years older and probably resented the hell out of the younger brother who got his father's name and was a male in an era when that meant so much more than it does today. (and no, I'm not suggesting gender equality exists in 2017) The story of Uncle Ray's determination to visit his brother always struck me, and when, in Vietnam, Uncle Cliff and Aunt Rose sent me a three-foot, chemically embalmed Christmas tree, I fully understood how difficult it must have been to accomplish and I understood what family means.

Another year could make a huge difference for the defensive lineman.

Ohio State defensive end Jalyn Holmes has shown flashes of greatness.

- Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

Jalyn Holmes has done just that since joining Ohio State in 2014, where he immediately got some burn in the Big Ten championship and the College Football Playoff finale. Last year, he had 8.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. It seemed at times when the defense really need a play, he was there.

“If you go back and watch film on Jalyn last year, I thought he plays the most consistent of all the guys,” defensive line coach Larry Johnson said. “He is a starter in my mind. He practices like a starter and practices with the 1s, so to me, he is a 1.”

“I think he brings a lot to the table. He has got high energy, great leadership skills and he wants to be great. And a guy who works as hard as he does to be in [his] position, I am really excited about what Jalyn can bring to the table.” It’ll be Holmes’ second year as a starter, and past Buckeyes have shown that’s typically when you can see greater improvement.

Best picks of the century from Ohio State

- Chase Goodbread, NFL.com

Ohio State has had 115 players selected in the draft since 2000, most among all FBS programs, according to Goodbread. The top three players in his rankings were Nick Mangold, Ezekiel Elliott, and LeCharles Brantley at No. 1, 2, and 3 respectively.

Mangold should be no surprise at the top spot, despite Elliott’s monster rookie season. He spent 11 years with the Jets before being released his offseason, and started all 16 regular season games for the first five seasons of his career. If Elliott proves to have a consistent career in the Dallas backfield, there’s no doubt that he’d jump Mangold.

At No. 4 and No. 5 are Joey Bosa and Donte Whitner. Bosa also had one heck of a rookie season in 2016 for the Chargers. His presence immediately improved their defense, and had 10.5 sacks in 12 games. Much like Elliott, if he keeps that type of production up, he’ll move on up the list.

The Big Ten moving its conference tournament up a week to play at Madison Square Garden has left CBS in need of a new lead-in to its annual NCAA tournament selection show.

- Mike Rutherford, SB Nation

This could be a mighty big pain for Ohio State and its fans if the Buckeyes can compete next season. The Big Ten will be moving their conference tournament a week in order to play at Madison Square Garden. That now means we’ll have another week to wait and see if the Buckeyes make the tournament, if they’re even able to make it on the bubble.

To replace the Big Ten, the American Athletic Conference will be aired on CBS on March 10, along with the championship game on Selection Sunday. The Big Ten will return to its normal role in 2019, so this could end up not being a big deal for Ohio State after all.

It’s okay. You don’t have to love everybody. I certainly don’t.

I realize that writing this opens me up to some serious “Freezing Cold Takes” treatment if things change, but right now, it looks like Big Ten membership should be very stable for the foreseeable future.

The conference has an exceptionally lucrative TV deal, and thanks to their massive alumni bases and deep history, should stand to be profitable no matter what happens next with the evolution of TV rights. The schools share similar academic profiles — everybody but Nebraska is in the AAU — and have similar missions. Plus they’re anchored by some of the biggest brands in the entire sport.

The Big Ten is the oldest conference in college football, and it sure doesn’t look like anybody would want to leave.

But just because we’re stuck with everybody doesn’t mean we have to love everybody equally. After all, Ohio State fans generally don’t have the same geographic tribalism that say, SEC fans do. Nobody is chanting “BEE-ONE-GEE” because Iowa or Maryland did something, unless they’re being meta/ironic.

So, since it’s late May and there isn’t a whole lot going on, let me pose a question to you:

Are these teams you wouldn’t miss if they left the Big Ten?

Clearly, losing some schools would be catastrophic. As much as us Buckeye fans hate Michigan, only the most sadistic of us would want anything to happen to the Wolverines that would end, or dramatically cheapen, their rivalry. Even if it isn’t cool to admit this in some corners of the internet, Penn State is basically a secondary rival, and losing them would suck. Ohio State has had meaningful games over the last decade with schools like Michigan State and Wisconsin, and even though they haven’t played that much, I imagine not that many Buckeye fans would want to see Nebraska leave so soon.

But other schools? Sure, I see the appeal of maintaining historical affiliations, or of academic prestige. But if we’re just talking about creating compelling matchups for Ohio State athletics, I’ll be honest with y’all — If three teams decided they were leaving the Big Ten tomorrow, I wouldn’t personally shed a tear.

Those teams? Minnesota, Northwestern, and Rutgers.

I don’t have anything personal against Minnesota. Minneapolis is a lovely city, and Minnesota is a great school. But let’s take a quick look at the recent history of the Ohio State-Minnesota series:

Screen_Shot_2017_05_24_at_11.03.04_AM.png
Winsipedia

This hasn’t just been a one-sided affair; it’s been a mostly boring one-sided affair. Not only were most of these games blowouts, they weren’t meaningful. Over the last decade, the most important moments in Ohio State-Minnesota history was a 2014 win that wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicated, and a large adult assistant coach eating ice cream on the sidelines.

Minnesota’s basketball team has improved their fortunes significantly over the last year, and may compete for a Big Ten title next season, but they’ve also been up and down. Do any of you look forward to playing Minnesota in anything? Do you feel an especially close connection to anything Minnesota? I personally don’t.

Northwestern follows a similar pattern. Let’s take a look at that series:

Screen_Shot_2017_05_24_at_11.10.31_AM.png
Winsipedia

You’ll have to go all the way back to 1971 to find the next Northwestern win. While the last two games have been close — and the 2013 game actually memorable and important — the historical rule whenever Ohio State and Northwestern play in anything is that Ohio State almost always wins. Often, by quite a bit.

Their stadiums are small and lag far behind the rest of the conference. Their alumni base is way smaller. And unless you live in Chicago, or work in the media or marketing, you probably don’t run into that many Northwestern fans in your life. You don’t need Northwestern in your life to have an excuse to go to Chicago. It’s okay.

It’s nice having another fancy-pants academic power in the conference, I guess. And their basketball program is improving, although we can still count their all-time NCAA tournament appearances on one finger. But if Northwestern left, and Ohio State played them once every 15 or 20 years as an out of conference opponent? That’d be fine with me. And this is coming from a guy that married an Evanston native and has family ties to the school.

The last almost goes without saying.

You don’t need me to rehash the argument against Rutgers, which could easily go 1,000 words, but let’s just be brief: Outside of lacrosse, wrestling and women’s soccer, Rutgers is bad at most sports, and because of the school’s financial situation and historical lack of investment, they’re likely to be bad at most sports for at least a while longer. They may be a decade plus away from beating Ohio State in football. They don’t have the benefit of decades and decades of historical affiliation with Ohio State. They’re not in the Midwest.

Every game you play against Rutgers is a game you don’t play against Nebraska, or Wisconsin, or Iowa, or somebody more fun out of conference. I wish the school nothing but the best, and for all of our sakes, I hope the athletic department continues its slow growth. But if they decided they were going to jump ship for the Big East 2: Electric Boogaloo and left tomorrow? I wouldn’t cry.

Maybe you feel differently. Maybe you’d be fine with Ohio State ditching Purdue, or Indiana, or Illinois. Maybe you hate the idea of non-midwestern expansion and want Maryland to leave; as a PG County resident, they’ve grown on me, but I’m selfish. Maybe you treasure the history so much that anybody leaving would crush you. Maybe you hate somebody else, I don’t know.

It’s academic, because nobody is leaving, nor should they. But if you’re going to tell me you’re personally hyped up for the next time Ohio State plays Northwestern, I think you’d be the first.

After denying a previous report citing Thad Matta, Williams speaks out.

A few weeks back, Ohio State senior-to-be guard Kam Williams was reportedly removing his name from NBA Draft consideration and returning to school for his final year of eligibility. After the ubiquitous Jon Rothstein cited Buckeyes head coach Thad Matta, all sounded good, in terms of the Buckeyes’ best chance for some actual upperclassman leadership and guard depth.

But then Williams took to Twitter and vehemently denied the report, stating that nobody ever bothered actually checking with him.

It would seem the drama is a thing of the past, as early Wednesday, as we approached the deadline for players to either cement their 2017 NBA Draft status or elect to return to school if they hadn’t hire an agent, Williams posted to Instagram a pretty clear indication what the 2017-2018 season holds in store:

more year. Just as excited is those dudes lol

A post shared by Baltimore, MD (@kamwilliams15) on May 24, 2017 at 6:31am PDT

Williams’ numbers weren’t mind-blowing last year, but he was effective upon being inserted to the OSU starting lineup late in the season. He finished the campaign averaging 9.4 points per game, 2.1 boards and an assist per contest.

Perhaps most importantly, Williams provides some long-range shooting ability, something the Buckeyes have lacked in recent years.

Will adding a senior guard to the mix do enough to change what could be a long season? That remains to be seen.

Once again, the Buckeyes are going into SEC territory.

Georgia product gets Ohio State offer

2019 cornerback Jalen Perry (Dacula, GA / Dacula) picked up an offer from Ohio State on Tuesday. Perry made it known that he held a coveted OSU offer with a tweet.

Thankful to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University! #BuckeyeNation @ChadSimmons_ @MurfBaldwin @therealkwat @HamiltonESPN pic.twitter.com/usGyODd9yW

— Jalen Perry (@Jayworld05) May 23, 2017

While he is just coming off a sophomore season, already looks like the kind of athlete the Buckeyes covet at the cornerback position. The CB comes in at 6-foot and 180 pounds. His lengthy body makes him a prime target for Ohio State, as he’s a guy who can lock onto and shut down receivers anywhere on the field.

Perry is from the Peach State, so holding off the in-state Georgia Bulldogs will be no easy task for the Buckeyes. However, Ohio State has had a ton of success recruiting the Peach State in the last decade. The Ohio State offer runs Perry’s total to 11, and though he has not yet been evaluated by the major recruiting sites, it’s very likely that he ends up as a four-star prospect—so expect more offers to be filling up his mailbox in the near future.

In addition to Ohio State and Georgia, Perry holds notable offers from Alabama, Ole Miss and Tennessee. The Buckeyes will try and get him on campus this summer for an unofficial visit or a camp.

If you want to see what Jalen can do, below is a sophomore highlight reel that is on Hudl.

Staying in the 2019 class

In a report from 247Sports’ Bill Kurelic, 2019 quarterback Michael Johnson (Eugene, OR /Sheldon) likes Ohio State a lot and will be trying to get back on campus sometime this summer. The Buckeyes have recruited the quarterback position as well as any program the last couple of years and will look to add one of the best in the class of 2019. Now, this recruitment will not likely end anytime soon and is sure to go on well into Johnson’s senior season. However, the Buckeyes are in it early and have positioned themselves nicely as Johnson heads into his junior season.

Already, there is stiff competition for the dual-threat QB. Ohio State joins Oregon (the hometown program), LSU and Georgia as programs that have offered the Eugene native a scholarship since the beginning of March.
