Ohio State just landed their next workhorse back.

After months of waiting, Master Teague finally got the green light to make the decision he’d wanted to make for his entire recruitment.

A month ago, Mater Teague’s recruitment looked far different than it does today. He had a top three of Auburn, Georgia, and Tennessee, and was widely looked at as the kind of recruit a school like Ohio State wouldn’t offer until late in the process. Earlier this month, Teague visited a camp at Alabama, and his performance there completely changed his recruitment, and led directly to his commitment to Ohio State today.

At that Tuscaloosa camp, Teague put up incredible numbers, including a 4.31 40 time, 40.7 vertical leap, and 4.00 3 cone. With those numbers, Teague would have been the top running back performer in each event at the 2017 NFL combine. Then, five days later, Teague showcased his skills again, at an Ohio State camp. He put up equally impressive numbers, and wowed the coaches. Teague also spent some of his time in Columbus being wowed himself, as he took a tour of Ohio State’s campus, met with Mickey Marotti, and got a look into the daily life of an Ohio State football player. Shortly after, he was called into Urban Meyer’s office, and offered the scholarship he had coveted for so long.

Ohio State doesn’t offer anyone they don’t think can play at Ohio State, especially not at a position like running back, where there’s only one on the field at a time, and a recruiting miss can cripple your running game for years. With that being said, what does Master Teague bring to Ohio State?

ON THE FIELD

Teague’s skill set on the football field is extremely rare. At 5-foot-11, 210 pounds, Teague runs a 4.31 40 time(!!!!!). For comparison, Ohio State running back Mike Weber is 5-foot-10, 214 pounds, and runs a 4.52 40 time. That’s not saying that Weber is slow, it’s just saying that Teague is a freak athlete.

With Teague, as is usually the case with freak high school athletes, he’s pretty raw, and has some developing to do on the technical side of the running back position. He’ll need to learn the nuances of the position before he sees the field in Columbus, and thankfully for him, Tony Alford is one of the best running back coaches in the business.

With the sheer amount of raw talent and athleticism that Teague possesses, if he continues to work at honing his craft at Ohio State, he could be in the NFL a few years from now. As a runner, Teague is already very skilled. He has very solid footwork, cuts up the field with purpose, hits holes quickly, runs downhill, and plays with a lot of power. His ability to cut, paired with his strength, is a very dangerous, and very rare combination.

He still needs to work on the things a lot of young running backs need to work on. His patience is good, but it could be better. He has a tendency to get tunnel vision, he needs to survey the entire field so he doesn’t miss open holes, opting instead for more contact, and usually, less yardage. He also needs a lot of help in the passing game, both blocking and receiving, though there’s another back in this class that will likely do a lot of the receiving out of the backfield in place of Teague.

IN THE CLASS

In Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class, Teague’s fit almost makes too much sense. He’s the third running back, along with Brian Snead and Jaelen Gill (not really a running back), and the 13th commitment overall. He makes so much sense because Ohio State doesn’t have a running back like him in the class yet. Snead is more of a scat back, while Gill is an H-Back, and possibly even a wide receiver. Neither of them are every-down running backs, and neither of them can carry the ball 25 times a game. Teague can.

This commitment also means the end of running back recruiting for Ohio State in 2018. They chased Zamir White for awhile, but ultimately, they felt they had a better chance with Teague, and didn’t want to miss out by waiting too long, for a player that will likely pick Georgia. This is very good news for Ohio State, because it means they can shift their focus away from the running backs in 2018, and towards other positions of need, as well as to their top running back target in 2019, Noah Cain.

Teague isn’t the kind of guy who will come in and be a star right away. No one is expecting that, no one will be disappointed when he’s not the next Maurice Clarett, starting as a true freshman. However, Teague has the potential to be the next great Ohio State running back. He has that “it factor” that every good running back needs, and if he keeps working, he should be a very good Buckeye, and eventually, a very good NFL running back.

BOOOOOM! The Buckeyes add another standout running back to their 2018 class.

After searching the recruiting trail for another soon-to-be senior running back to add alongside Brian Snead, Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes have finally found their man.

Committing to Ohio State over programs such as Auburn, Georgia, and Tennessee nearly 48 hours after earning his offer from Meyer and crew in person at Friday’s camp, three-star prospect Master Teague is now a future Buckeye after announcing his college plans via his Twitter page.

pic.twitter.com/ihf8e2fwdD

— Master W. Teague III (@33_blackman) June 11, 2017

A big time playmaker with the ball in his hands, Teague might be considered the 25th running back, and 501st prospect in the country right now, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, but watch his rankings skyrocket up the charts in the very near future.

While he isn’t a five-star rated recruit, Teague’s a powerful running back, who isn’t afraid of contact from defenders and has shown the ability to put points on the board in bunches.

As a junior at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, the now 13th member of the Buckeyes 2018 recruiting class, was a force in the backfield for the Blaze. Toting the rock 242 times, the 5-foot-10 210-pounder accounted for over 2,000 rushing yards and 24 trips to the end zone last season.

Still chasing Miami for the top overall spot in the 2018 class rankings, Teague is already helping the Buckeyes. After recently jumping fellow Big Ten program Penn State for the second position, Ohio State is now even closer to snatching number one away from the Hurricanes.

Keep your eyes peeled as the Land-Grant Holy Land team will have more on Master Teague, and what his commitment means for the Buckeyes.

RB Maurice Hall (National Champion)

FORMER OHIO STATE RB MAURICE HALL'S ACTING CAREER TAKES A BIG LEAP WITH HIS NEW MOVIE

82869_h.jpg,qitok=8GwKO0vB.pagespeed.ce.x7n-hUNgoe.jpg

Football doesn't last forever. Well, football does (said the NFL, a hint of panic in its voice), but players and careers do not. After a long and a fruitful high school/college/NFL/CFL/AFL career eventually you're going to figure out what in the hell comes next. Usually that involves either pharmaceutical sales or a partnership at a car dealership, but former Ohio State running back Maurice Hall has chosen a different path: he's an actor.

He's not the only Ohio State player, or even the only Ohio State running back, to get the acting bug. Eddie George has been a stage actor for years, including starring in "Chicago" on Broadway, and now Maurice Hall has written, acted and directed his own movie, which just premiered and will have a showing this afternoon at the Gateway Film Center at 4:30.

Called "Baker's Man," it's a romantic comedy (which you can watch the trailer of) that showcases the acting skills that Hall has been able to display on shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Grey's Anatomy, Criminal Minds, and the Mindy Project.

How J.T. Barrett can get his signature Ohio State moment and go down as one of the greatest QBs in Buckeye history

And he doesn’t necessarily need a national title or Heisman to do it.

I’m throwing down a sports hot take that will rustle some jimmies: J.T. Barrett is on the cusp of being one of the greatest (if not the greatest) quarterbacks to ever suit up in the Scarlet and Gray. While you don’t have to scour the Internet long to see dissenting opinions, ranging from Dwayne Haskins and Joe Burrow being endorsed as the new signal caller in Columbus to freshman phenom Tate Martell getting the chance at QB1, Barrett, whether you like it or not, has thrived (and for the most part, maintained his starting QB role) in the greatest era of Ohio State QBs.

In the last five seasons, Urban Meyer has had Braxton Miller, Kenny Guiton, Barrett and Cardale Jones take turns at controlling the Buckeye offense. In the last five seasons, the Buckeyes have gone 61-6. Each QB pulled off dramatic wins, however, which of those moments (if any) have stood the test of time and can be deemed a “signature moment.”

If there were signature moments from that quartet of quarterbacks, then they rest squarely on the arm of the man that went by the nickname of ‘12 gauge’. Cardale Jones quarterbacked the Buckeyes past three exquisite opponents, which were basically gobbled up like an appetizer, entree and dessert.

461464510.jpg
For some, it takes years to make a great moment in team history. For Jones, it took three games—and he created three magical moments.

Jones’ performance against the Wisconsin Badgers’ defense in the 2015 Big Ten Conference Championship Game left Buckeye nation wanting more in the next contest—the Sugar Bowl Semifinal against Alabama. Again, Jones did his part in helping the Buckeyes savor a big game victory. The win for OSU was the food equivalent of getting a filet mignon cooked exactly the way you like it. And for the last dish, Jones flambéed the Oregon Ducks defense to win a national title.

See, to reminisce the tale of Cardale Jones was easy; that’s how you know a signature moment was created. Even though Braxton made big plays and spin moves, and Guiton’s performance against Purdue in 2012 was cool as the other side of the pillow, those moments will gradually fade into Buckeye history—and will ultimately, and unfortunately, work their way to the land of forgotten memories.

But that’s okay, though. The land of forgotten memories also hold moments like Michigan winning a natty; the moments happened so long ago, that you can’t remember if they actually happened, or if you dreamt them

This brings us back to how Barrett can get his signature moment as a Buckeye. Right now, he has a bunch of highlight reel worthy plays, but nothing that really jumps out as ‘THE moment.” If you commissioned someone to write a screenplay on Barrett with the whole movie revolving around his signature moment at OSU, you would find it to be quite difficult. But here’s the thing about Barrett: he doesn’t necessarily need his big moment to be a national title win.

Winning the natty would be the obvious answer, but his records in the Big Ten and against the team up north set the building blocks for his signature moment to happen in his fourth year under center.

At sometime in the early part of the 2017 regular season, Barrett is going to get his six touchdowns to tie Drew Brees’ Big Ten record of 106 TDs. Already taking up substantial amounts of real estate in the Buckeye record books, Barrett can climb into the top spot all-time in passing yards at OSU with 1,300 yards this upcoming season.

Craig Krenzel, who is No. 11 on the all-time OSU passing list, had signature moments against Purdue and Miami in 2002/2003. Granted, the ‘Holy Buckeye’ fourth-down play against the Boilermakers kept the Bucks title hopes alive, however, the moment was only amplified when Krenzel completed his second signature moment by quarterbacking the Buckeyes to a win against the unstoppable Miami Hurricanes.

You could also make a strong case that Krenzel’s other signature moment against the ‘Canes was throwing the ball at exactly the right spot where Chris Gamble was gonna be held up for pass interference/defensive holding, but I digress.

The No. 7 man on the OSU passing list is Troy Smith. Smith had three wins against Michigan, including the famed No. 1 v. No. 2 matchup in 2006, and collected a Heisman Trophy for his efforts in the 2006 campaign. Regardless of what happened after winning the Heisman, Smith was firmly planted forever in the lore of Buckeye football. Winning trophies like the Heisman will do that. However, the Heisman did absolutely no good in Smith’s final game for the Buckeyes, as he was picked apart by the Florida Gators in a 41-14 defeat in the BCS National Championship Game.

631505232.jpg
Barrett has his name all over the OSU record books. However, he hasn’t had that one breakout moment in Scarlet and Gray.

In the case of Barrett, winning a Heisman or a title will be the exclamation point to a fantastic career at Ohio State. But what if I said—or technically, wrote out—that Barrett can still be on the same level as Jones, Krenzel and Smith in regards to being a great (or greatest) QB since the start of the new millennia.

Barrett has the chance to down the Wolverines four times. That would be one way he states his claim as one of the best quarterbacks to ever play for the Buckeyes. Since 1960, no Buckeye QB has been able to go 4-for-4 against the team up north. Even guys like Krenzel and Miller lost to Michigan once.

If Barrett can march the troops into Ann Arbor and pull out another exciting victory, his signature moment (and legacy) will start with the dominance against Michigan. Anything after that (i.e. winning a Heisman or a national championship) will be the cherry on top of an illustrious career in Columbus.

Quantitatively, Barrett’s numbers at Ohio State are something that is rarely seen. Usually, the Buckeye offense utilizes the rushing game more than the passing game, and the QB’s arm isn’t the main show. That’s part of the reason why Ohio State has struggled to put a quarterback prospect in the NFL. Entering the 2017 campaign, Barrett is making serious noise in taking over the top spot in just about every possible statistical category.

On the qualitative side, Barrett’s lasting impression at OSU is a little murkier. He’s been able to chalk up the wins, but in big games, the chalk stops. Two seasons ago, Barrett QB’d the Buckeyes to a 17-14 loss against Michigan State—ultimately ending the Buckeyes’ chance to defend the title in the College Football playoff. Last season, the Buckeyes melted on the road against Penn State, but managed to squeak their way into the playoff against Clemson. (And as we all know, we don’t talk about that Fiesta Bowl against Clemson.)

2018560.jpg
Quantitatively, Krenzel had okay numbers at Ohio State. On the qualitative side, he was in the center of two big moments in Ohio State history.

How much accountability Barrett takes for the worst of times is debatable. Coaching and game strategy in tight games seems to be the bugaboo to OSU’s national championship hopes. Different offensive coordinators and quarterback coaches doesn’t make the job any easier. Being in the quarterback’s room at OSU is beginning to feel like being a student in the Defense Against the Dark Arts class in the Harry Potter world: you have no idea who your teacher is going to be the next year.

The 2015 national title won by the Buckeyes couldn’t be achieved if it weren’t for J.T. Barrett stepping up when Braxton Miller got hurt. The story of Cardale Jones couldn’t have happened if Barrett didn’t play out of his mind for 12 games, enabling 12 gauge to do the same in the three subsequent postseason games. Being quarterback in the golden age of Buckeye football has its peaks and valleys. In the valley of criticism, the main echo is that Barrett can’t make the accurate throws like he used to. In that same valley, the crushing expectations also compound the problem: either beat Michigan and get a title, or it’s mission failure.

So, through all of this debate, comparison to other Buckeye QBs and trying to find some sort of equation to determine whether or not Barrett ranks among the best ever to take the snaps under center inside Ohio Stadium, here’s the verdict: Barrett has the advantage to take different paths to be considered one of the Buckeyes’ best.

Each one of those paths feature a signature moment, and he needs just one:

  1. Beat Michigan, again (and go 4-for-4 against them in his whole career)
  2. Win a Heisman Trophy
  3. Win a national championship as the starting QB

If Barrett doesn’t reach any of these moments, he’s still one of the best quarterbacks OSU has ever had. But, if he hits just one of these benchmarks, he is at the table with an elite class and is considered one of the great QBs. If he hits two or three of these marks, then I’m willing to throw down another take: J.T. Barrett is the greatest quarterback ever in Ohio State history.

Beating Michigan. A tradition that never gets old.

Things probably won’t be very basic for Oklahoma next time around either.

In case you haven’t heard, “Big Game Bob” is no longer the head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. For all intents and purposes, this is good news for Urban Meyer and Ohio State. Bob Stoops won 10 or more games in 14 of his 18 seasons as the Sooners’ head coach and oversaw some of the best offenses the nation had to offer.

Similar to the Tom Herman - Urban Meyer dynamic, Stoops wasn’t always the sole mastermind behind the Sooners’ offensive plans. Offensive coordinator Josh Heupel worked as Oklahoma’s playcaller from 2011 to 2014 before Lincoln Riley replaced him following a disappointing 8-5 season that saw Oklahoma score just six points against Clemson in an embarrassing 34-point blowout in the Russell Athletic Bowl.

Man, getting blown out by Clemson after a poor offensive performance seems terrible. Could you even imagine? I can’t.

Riley has been nothing short of remarkable since seizing control of the Sooners’ offense: He’s spearheaded consecutive top-five scoring offenses and scored at least 30 points in 22 of his 26 games.

Of course, one of those poor offensive performances came at the hands of the Silver Bullets. In case you forgot, here are some of the takeaways from that defensive performance:

  • Ohio State allowed their first offensive touchdown of the season. BUT, thanks to a Jerome Baker pick-six, the Silver Bullets were still up 24 to 23 against the offenses from Bowling Green, Tulsa and Oklahoma.
  • Oklahoma running back Samaje Perine (the all-time single game rushing leader) had averaged 112 yards on 18 carries with 1.4 touchdowns per game in his career. Against Ohio State he had 60 yards on 17 carries and zero touchdowns, an average of just 3.5 yards per carry.
  • Baker Mayfield had a historic performance on Saturday. He set several single-game career lows including: third-lowest completion percentage, most interceptions, second-lowest quarterback rating and the second-lowest yards per attempt average.

As Mayfield said himself, “We got our asses kicked.”

Of course, plenty has changed since these two teams met in Norman last fall. Let’s take a look at some of the early questions for this likely top-10 matchup.

Can Ohio State make life hell for Baker Mayfield again?

Mayfield has had an overwhelmingly successful collegiate career that’s seen him transfer from Texas Tech and work his way to a third-place finish in the 2016 Heisman voting. Still, he struggled mightily against the Buckeyes, getting sacked three times while tossing two interceptions. It’s really hard to understate how much trouble the Sooners had throwing the football:

  • Mayfield averaged 7.06 yards per pass attempt — his worst average of the season by 2.07 yards.
  • It was Mayfield’s only game in which he completed less than 60 percent of his passes. In fact, his mark of 53.1 percent was the fourth-worst completion percentage of Mayfield’s 34-game career.

This isn’t to say the Sooners’ offensive woes were all Mayfield’s fault. Ohio State regularly got pressure on him all night with just three men, allowing them to spy Mayfield and still blanket Oklahoma’s receivers with seven defensive backs:

Mayfield is a great quarterback that thrives when a play breaks down, but the Buckeyes continuously made him work for every throw and managed to eliminate his scrambling ability with Jerome Baker. If Oklahoma once again struggles with (literally the identical) Ohio State defensive line, the Sooners’ offense could once again be in for a long night.

Can the Sooners get anything out of their playmakers?

I wish I could be more specific about who their playmakers are, but top-talents Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon, and Dede Westbrook have all made their way to the NFL. Of course, the Sooners will never be at a loss of offensive talent and they’ll likely have worthy replacements.

But can these replacements do more than their past teammates? Ohio State managed to completely shut down Mayfield’s top-three weapons last season:

  • Mixon gained just 93 yards combined on the ground and through the air — his second-lowest mark of the season. He did have an electric 97-yard kickoff return (reminder: Oklahoma’s offense actually only scored 17 points on Ohio State’s defense).
  • Perine averaged a season-low 3.5 yards per carry and broke exactly one run for longer than 10 yards.
  • Westbrook's 51 receiving yards were his second fewest of the season. It would be only the third game all season he failed to score a touchdown.

A lot of these problems came from the Sooners’ receiver’s inability to break free from man coverage. Ohio State was able to focus on the run game with their front-seven and allow their defensive backs to take away all potential weapons:

It’s unclear if the Buckeyes will have the best secondary in the country again, but either way the Sooners’ playmakers will need to win more one-on-one matchups this time around to put some points on the board.

Can the Oklahoma offensive line give this offense a chance to succeed?

Ohio State’s defensive line regularly pressured Mayfield, but losing pass-rush battles was far from the only problem this unit faced. Perine couldn’t find anywhere to run, while other times the offensive line failed to properly identify where pressure was coming from:

It’d be surprising if Ohio State’s nickel defense gives the Sooners so many problems again this season, but it’d also be surprising if Greg Schiano and company don’t have a few new exotic blitzes up their sleeves. Ohio State’s defense is difficult enough to navigate with great offensive execution; the Sooners can’t expect to walk into Columbus and win making as many mental mistakes as they did last season.

I’m in the camp that thinks the Sooners won’t suffer much of a drop off from Stoops to Reilly. Oklahoma has relied on out-scoring opponents for years and that won’t change with the elevation of their offensive coordinator to head coach. Oklahoma has the talent — and most importantly the quarterback — to cause problems for the Buckeyes’ defense, but can they get better execution from both their playmakers and offensive line?

September 9th can't get here soon enough.

The Buckeyes need to improve recruiting. Here’s where it starts.

Chris Holtmann has his job cut out for him rebuilding Ohio State basketball, but the biggest challenge at first is going to be rebuilding the roster. Right, the Buckeyes don’t have the depth, or even the dang bodies, to compete in the upper half of the Big Ten right now. Recruiting is going to be critical.

But what prospects are at the top of Ohio State’s radar? What position groups are the most important? Who does Holtmann already have relationships with?

To get the answers, we chatted with an old friend, Zach Fleer, the owner of 270Hoops, and perhaps the biggest expert on Ohio high school hoops, and especially Columbus-area high school hoops, to get the straight dope on what needs to happen next for the Buckeyes.

I felt a lot more excited about talking to Zach. I think you will too.

As opposed to never seeing the field and watching their MUCH higher rated teammates play every game against top teams
