Back to the drawing board for the Buckeyes.

Overnight, multiple media reports indicated that Creighton head coach Greg McDermott would be replacing Thad Matta as the head coach at Ohio State. However, McDermott, who has been at Creighton since 2010 tweeted on Thursday afternoon, that he would be remaining in Omaha.

I'm blessed and honored to be the coach at Creighton.....and am looking forward to many more great years in Omaha! #rolljays

— Coach McDermott (@cucoachmac) June 8, 2017

Barring a change in McDermott’s status, OSU athletic director Gene Smith will now have to return to the list of candidates that he mentioned to The Columbus Dispatch’s Adam Jardy early this morning.

Gene Smith told me, "I'm not done" and "I've got a list" but would not comment further or confirm names on the list. Indicated it's long.

— Adam Jardy (@AdamJardy) June 8, 2017

Other coaches rumored to be on the Buckeyes’ list are Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams, West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, and current Ohio State assistant Chris Jent. But perhaps that list is about to grow.

Matta was let go as Ohio State’s basketball coach on Monday, following a 13-year run that saw him post the best winning percentage in Big Ten history, and amass more wins than any coach in program history.

Good news! They’ll probably score this time.

If you’re upset about the way Ohio State’s last battle with Clemson turned out, good news! The Buckeyes will get another crack at them.

Just not the football team.

The matchups for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge were announced today, and the Buckeyes will face the Clemson Tigers at home. Date, time and exact network are all TBA.

Clemson finished 17-16 last season, and was ranked 46th in the final KenPom rankings. They didn’t fare quite as well in the final RPI, (75), although that was still higher than Ohio State’s No. 92 rating.

Clemson should complete the big name games on Ohio State’s out of conference schedule. The Buckeyes will face North Carolina in New Orleans, and will also open against Gonzaga in massive PK80 tournament. After Gonzaga, the Buckeyes will play either Florida or Stanford, and then either Duke, Butler, Texas, or Portland State.

Additional non-conference games will include William & Mary, Miami (OH), Robert Morris and The Citadel.

That will give Ohio State plenty of RPI chances to build their profile before Big Ten conference play.

Now, if we only knew who was actually going to coach the team next year...

Teague is set to make a camp visit to the Buckeyes on Friday.

Teague looks to impress Ohio State

Coming into Thursday, Ohio State holds the nation’s No. 2 ranked recruiting class; that’s just a notch behind Miami (FL) for the top spot. Within the Buckeyes’ class that features a dozen pledges is just one pure running back in four-star ‘18 Brian Snead of Armwood (FL).

Make no mistake, the program is hoping to add another pure runner to pair with the 5-foot-11, 200-pounder and the ideal candidate for Ohio State and every other university in the country is Zamir White, the top running back in the class. In the meantime, while the pursuit for White continues, it’s safe for the Buckeyes to keep every stone unturned in case White, who is currently projected to land at Georgia, decides against playing collegiality in Columbus.

That’s where ‘18 RB Master Teague (Murfreesboro, TN / Blackman) comes into the picture. According to Andrew Lind of Eleven Warriors, Ohio State will have the chance to see Teague perform as he will take part in camp on Friday.

It will be interesting to see what develops here. For the time being, Teague does not hold an offer from the Buckeyes. With that being said, an impressive showing at the camp could change things. However, will it be of the committable variety? That’s the question. Ohio State is likely going to see what happens with White first — and that is entirely understandable. Now, where the problem comes into play is that Teague, who currently has a top three that consists of Auburn, Georgia, and Tennessee, told the Daily News Journal in the middle of May that he planned on making a decision by early June.

How Stoops' departure affects Buckeyes

Bob Stoops stepped down from the head coach position at Oklahoma on Wednesday. Both the Sooners and Buckeyes were competing for some of the same recruits, but how much does the landscape change now that Stoops is out of the picture?

First we will speak on ‘18 safety Josh Proctor, who committed to Ohio State over Oklahoma. It’s important to begin by saying there has been no indications whatsoever that Proctor was entertaining the idea of ultimately being a Sooner since he pledged to the Buckeyes back at the annual spring game. With that being said, Proctor is an Oklahoma kid. He currently plays at Owasso High School which is about two hours from Norman, Okla. Of course, it would be possible for something to change because anything is possible in recruiting. With that being said, with Stoops’ surprising bolt from the program, it certainly looks less likely -- more likely than it already did.

The other name that should come up when talking about Oklahoma is ‘18 safety Jaiden Woodbey of St. John Bosco (CA). The Sooners were one of the finalists four Woodbey before announcing his pledge to Ohio State, so obviously he holds the program in high regards. Something that began to move the rumor mill as of late was when a few 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions had Woodbey flipping his pledge to Ohio State over to Oklahoma.

Wow

— DUBSKI ™ (@JaidenWoodbey6) June 7, 2017

Now, like I said with Proctor, this does not mean Oklahoma will not still be in play here. Who knows, maybe Lincoln Riley will come in and make some major noise as the head man on the recruiting trail. All that we should assume from this news is that while it might not particularly help Ohio State’s chances of keeping Woodbey in the fold, I can’t see a scenario in which this hurts their chances of keeping him aboard.

Ohio State may have just found their man.

The Buckeyes might have found their next basketball coach.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, Ohio State has offered the men’s basketball coaching job to Greg McDermott.

Ohio State has offered job to Creighton’s Greg McDermott, source told ESPN. Two sides met tonight.

— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) June 8, 2017

The Buckeyes were tied to numerous other names, like Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg, Arizona Wildcats head coach Sean Miller, Xavier head coach Chris Mack, and others, but apparently decided the man in Omaha is the one to rebuild the Buckeyes program.

McDermott has spent his entire coaching career in the Midwest, most recently with the Bluejays, but also with Iowa State, Northern Iowa and North Dakota State. He achieved quite a bit of success at Creighton, earning a 165-81 record over seven seasons, while making the NCAA Tournament four times, the most memorable of which came while coaching his son, Doug.

McDermott has helped guide Creighton through a major increase in schedule strength once they joined the Big East, but he never made an NCAA Tournament with Iowa State, and despite having some talented teams, never took the Blue Jays to the Sweet 16. He’ll face heightened expectations at Ohio State for sure, if he takes the job.

Could the Buckeyes look to the Big East for their next coach?

We know Chris Jent got an interview for the Ohio State job, and now Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg is reportedly a candidate. And now we can add another name to the list.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, the Buckeyes will meet with Creighton head coach Greg McDermott.

McDermott is a new name to the list, as he hasn’t been mentioned by any other national reporter or analyst to date.

McDermott has spent his entire coaching career in the Midwest, most recently with the Bluejays, but also with Iowa State, Northern Iowa and North Dakota State. While he struggled in his four years at Ames, he achieved quite a bit of success at Creighton, earning a 165-81 record over seven seasons, while making the NCAA Tournament four times.

Those best seasons were when McDermott was coaching his son, Doug, who was one of the best scorers in college basketball, but recruiting has been on the uptick for the Bluejays, and he’s shown he’s been able to build a program in a tough league even without him.

Hmmmm...

Earlier today, we learned that Chris Mack probably isn’t going to be a candidate to be Ohio State’s next coach. But according to one report, that doesn’t mean the Buckeyes aren’t going after some big names.

According to Gary Parrish of CBS, the Buckeyes are looking to Chicago, as Fred Hoiberg may be an option.

Chicago Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg has emerged as a real candidate at Ohio State, a source told @CBSSports.

— Gary Parrish (@GaryParrishCBS) June 8, 2017

Hoiberg has struggled in his two years as head coach of the Bulls, leading Chicago to a first round exit at the hands of Boston, but how much of that is because of his coaching and how much is because of Chicago’s roster isn’t totally clear. But there are examples of coaches who weren’t successful in the NBA, but very successful in college.

And we already know Hoiberg can be successful in college. In five seasons at Iowa State, Hoiberg had an impressive 115-56 record, including four NCAA Tournament bids, and one Sweet 16 appearance. He was known for his liberal use of transfer players to bring in higher level talent to Ames, which isn’t an easy place to recruit, and for producing entertaining, offensive-focused basketball.

If the Buckeyes pick Hoiberg, they’re getting a man who knows how to develop talent, is familiar with the Midwest, and has experience with the highest level of basketball.

The Buckeyes also reportedly interviewed Chris Jent today. We’ll have more as this develops.

It wasn’t just players who respected Matta, he made a big impact on local coaches too.

“He always had time for high school coaches. Even though there’s a big gap between high school coaches and big-time college coaches, you never felt that way with him. The biggest thing you can give anybody is your time and he gave his time to a lot of coaches here in central Ohio.”

-Gahanna head coach Tony Staib, via Adam Jardy of The Columbus Dispatch

The now former Ohio State men’s basketball coach Thad Matta not only made an impact on other coaches and colleagues among the college ranks, he was also a close confidant and mentor to many high school coaches around Columbus. Jardy of the Dispatch spoke with many of Matta’s peers who echoed the sentiments of his former players, the coach was a great and humble man.

From Westerville South to Gahanna, to Pickerington Central and North, Matta had an open door policy for the local coaches, and maintained those relationships even if they weren’t mutually beneficial. Jason Bates, Pickerington North coach, remembers early in his career, when he didn’t have much to offer Matta in terms of Ohio State-caliber talent, but he still received invitations to attend practices and camps.

One of Matta’s greatest traits is the importance he places on building and fostering relationships with his players. It’s why he’s had such success on the recruiting trail, and why former players come back to Columbus in spades on game day. Matta’s relationship with the schools he recruited were just as important as with the player he was there to see, and the coaches around him felt it.

“Smith is looking for a big-time recruiter as the next pitchman at Ohio State. That has worked out well for the football team since hiring Urban Meyer in 2012, and this is a school that has one of the top football-basketball combination schools in the country.”

-Bill Bender, Sporting News

One of the priorities for Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith will be bringing in a new men’s basketball that has proven success on the recruiting trail. One of the bigger complaints of the Matta era the past few seasons was losing some of those critical battles for recruits — especially local ones.

Smith recalled emphasizing the importance of winning some of these recruiting battles with Matta just days before they announced the decision to part ways. As the head coach continued to battle lingering back issues, which some teams used as “negatively recruiting”, the demands of recruiting — and expectations from past successes -- were just too much.

Throughout Monday’s press conference, Smith repeatedly harped on the importance of recruiting, calling it the “life blood of the program”. The Buckeyes haven’t been as consistently successful with recruiting Mr. Ohio the past few years, which is another priority for the program.

“In the latest Heisman Trophy odds, released by Las Vegas Superbook, two Buckeyes are within the top 20 favorites to take home the bronze statue.”

-Patrick Murphy, 247 Sports

Ohio State football is often predicted to be among the best teams in the country — even before training camp starts. Meyer and staff have done an excellent job bringing in skill players, and replacing the talent now suiting up in the NFL.

Not only is the team expected to do well, but two offensive weapons for the Buckeyes are in early consideration to be Heisman candidates. Senior quarterback J.T. Barrett has the fourth best odds (10/1) to win, and second-year running back Mike Weber stands at No. 19 on the list (40/1).

This is Barrett’s second time in the running for the ultimate collegiate honor. His impressive 2014 campaign may have gone slightly different had he not been sidelined against Michigan the last week of the regular season. Ohio State went on to win the national championship, but the Heisman went to quarterback Marcus Mariota instead.

If there was any doubt, these tweets probably clear it up.

One name near the top of virtually every list of possible coaches to take over the Ohio State men’s basketball program is Xavier’s Chris Mack.

It makes a ton of sense. The Buckeyes hired out of Xavier before, and it worked out just fine. Mack has as ton of success recruiting and developing talent in Ohio and across the Midwest. Also, Ohio State is a bump up in resources and prestige.

Plus, his house is mysteriously for sale already. Coincidence?!?

Well...yeah. It’s a coincidence.

Mack took to Twitter earlier today to clear the air:

My timing for this house sale, well . But we are moving to NKY. Love Xavier! Now, about that house we have to sell... any takers?

— Chris Mack (@CoachChrisMack) June 7, 2017

Folks, I’m getting older and less hip, but that sure looks like a pretty clear subtweet of Ohio State to me.

But we’re not just trying to parse meaning out of a single tweet that doesn’t mention Ohio State by name. At least one national reporter threw cold water on the idea that Mack, or either Miller brother, would be heading to Columbus.

Going forward it sounds like Chris Mack, Archie Miller, and Sean Miller can be removed from any Ohio St coaching speculation

— Brian Snow (@BSnowScout) June 6, 2017

The president of the University of Arizona had some, uh, pretty colorful language to describe what he thought about Ohio State potentially hiring Sean away from the Wildcats.

The Buckeyes will go anywhere to grab elite talent. But Virginia may be more important than you think.

In college football recruiting, relationships, pipelines, and familiarity are everything. The more familiar and comfortable a recruit is with your school, the better of a chance you have to ultimately land that recruit. Outside of maybe Nick Saban, no coach in college football understands that more than Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer. Urban is widely considered to be one of the best recruiters in the country, and it shows, both in his recruiting class rankings, and in his results on the field.

One of the things that Meyer is excellent at is identifying states he wants to hit hard, and bringing in assistant coaches that he knows can help accomplish his goals. The main pipeline states are well known by Buckeye fans, and have been for years. Ohio, Florida and Texas are the three largest, with Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan and New Jersey frequently being hit hard as well. However, there’s a crucial state that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves for how important it is to Ohio State: Virginia.

Ohio State has landed five recruits from Virginia since the 2014 class, with the most recent being 4-star linebacker Teradja Mitchell on Friday night. Of the states Ohio State recruits, only three have produced more Buckeyes than Virginia: Ohio, Florida, and Texas, with five of the six Texas recruits signing in the 2017 cycle. Only six states have produced five or more Buckeyes since 2014.

Here's what the recruiting breakdown, by state, looks like under Urban Meyer.

Florida Georgia Maryland Ohio Texas Virginia
2014 1 2 0 16 1 1
2015 3 1 1 12 0 2
2016 3 0 3 10 0 1
2017 4 0 1 6 5 0
2018 4 2 0 2 0 1
Total 15 5 5 46 6 5

Obviously the 2018 class is nowhere near being complete, and some of the states on that list, especially Ohio, are set to add more future Buckeyes in the coming months, but it’s easy to see that these six states have been the main priority for Ohio State in the last few years. It hasn’t always been that way. Under former head coach Jim Tressel, when looking at his five "prime years" in recruiting, 2007-2011, the priority states were very different.

Here's what that recruiting breakdown looked like under Tressel. Again, by state.

Florida Ohio Pennsylvania
2007 2 14 1
2008 4 10 2
2009 2 24 3
2010 2 11 2
2011 3 15 1
Total 13 74 9

First of all, there are only three of them. Only three states produced five or more Buckeyes from 2007-2011. Those three states combined to produce 96 recruits, or 78% of the classes in that time period. Under Meyer, six states have combined to produce 82 recruits, or roughly 71% of the classes. So not only are the states different, but Ohio State is less dependent on them.

Speaking of being less dependent on certain states, the dependency on Ohio has dropped under Meyer as well, from a whopping 60% to 40%. This stems from a few things. Many people point to Ohio State being a more national brand under Urban Meyer (although I disagree), but the other cause is pretty simple. Urban Meyer likes to land the best recruits in the country, and he likes to hire coaches that he knows can do that for him, whether it’s in Ohio or not. Ohio State will go anywhere, from Utah, to Nevada, to South Dakota, to land an elite recruit.

So what does Urban Meyer’s approach to recruiting have to do with the sudden influx of Virginians heading to Columbus? Well, it wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for Meyer’s hiring of two assistant coaches: Zach Smith, and Larry Johnson. Over the last five recruiting classes, Urban Meyer has combined Larry Johnson’s familiarity of the area with Zach Smith’s energy, and recruiting acumen, to create a nearly unstoppable recruiting duo in the state of Virginia.

When looking at the five recruits that have committed to Ohio State by way of Virginia since 2014, each one of them lists at least one of those two as their primary recruiter. In 2014, Zach Smith was credited for the recruitment of Jalyn Holmes. In 2015, both A.J. Alexander and Matthew Burrell were recruited by Larry Johnson, as well as their respective position coach, as is customary. Smith was again credited in 2016 for pulling in Wayne Davis. After a relatively down year in Virginia last year, Smith got back on track just a few days ago, in landing the commitment of aforementioned linebacker Teradja Mitchell.

This trend is nowhere near ending; in fact, it’s just getting started. Smith is targeting another linebacker from Virginia in the 2018 class, K’Vaughan Pope, while Johnson is after 2019 running back Devyn Ford.

There are no signs of Ohio State slowing down in Virginia. It’s one of the most talent-rich states in the country, and as long as Ohio State wants to win, and Virginia keeps churning out top talent that has eyes for the NFL, it’s a match that makes a lot of sense. While it may come at the cost of some lower level Ohio players Buckeye fans were accustomed to seeing under Jim Tressel, the expansion into places like Virginia, Georgia, and Texas, just improves Ohio State’s chances at seeing the kind of success that only Alabama can currently match.
