It looks like the Buckeyes are getting a good one.

“His biggest strength was the relationships he built with our players...He’d say, ‘Keep a pulse on this guy, take him to lunch.’ If something was going on with a player, he’d have us bring him over to his house.”

East Carolina assistant coach Mike Netti, to SI’s Pete Thamel

A lot has been made of new Ohio State basketball coach Chris Holtmann’s recruiting background, or success at Baylor. But this breakdown from Sports Illustrated shows other reasons for Buckeyes to be excited. Holtmann, who started back in NAIA as a player, also has a reputation for being low-ego, and for building strong relationships with his players to get the most out of every single guy on the team. Those are attributes that helps Thad Matta be so successful at Ohio State, and bodes well for Holmann’s ability to be successful in Columbus.

“With the advancement to the finals, this will be the first Buckeye women’s 4x400m relay to advance to the finals since the foursome of Chandra Kempel, Ayrizanna Favours, Ashley Caldwell and Jenna Griffin earned First Team All-America honors in 2008.”

Ohio State spokesperson

Speaking of a quartet, the 4x400m relay team punched their ticket to the finals at the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore.

Beatrice Hannan, Karrington Winters, Maggie Barrie and Aaliyah Barnes pulled together a time that qualifed them into the finals on Saturday. The quartet ran in the first of three heats on Thursday evening, and ended up in fourth place. However, since the other heats didn’t have a team outside of podium position to beat the Buckeyes’ time (3:29:97), the team of Hannan, Winters, Barrie and Barnes are off to the finals.

Here’s hoping this group of Buckeyes can bring home another title for OSU athletics.

“There’s something to be said for a coach as good as Matta was leaving the conference. I mean, Jake Delhomme was playing in a Super Bowl the last time Matta wasn’t coaching Ohio State.”

Caleb Friedman on Thad Matta leaving Ohio State, and the effect that has on the recruiting world (Inside NU)

As the college basketball world still unpacks the implications of Thad Matta leaving his post as Ohio State men’s basketball coach, some have broken down the impact Matta’s departure will have on the recruiting trail.

Inside NU, SB Nation’s Northwestern blog, looked into this, and came away with the conclusion that Northwestern may gain the ground on recruiting some key prospects - even though OSU may be getting a new head coach in the very near future.

The Wildcats are in a fight with the Buckeyes for a couple recruits, and the shock of Matta being removed from the equation tilts the edge in favor of NU - and possibly Michigan, who was also in the mix for the same recruits. Negative recruiting toward OSU (i.e. Matta’s health) was a factor in how the Bucks operated on the recruiting trail, however, a new hire would wipe away that card.

In the meantime, the unkown variable of who will be the next OSU basketbal coach helps the programs that were in the thick of recruiting battles with the Scarlet and Gray. However, if a hire of Chris Holtmann occurs, someone who has built a program and recruited well, the Buckeyes are back in business on the recruiting trail - and back in the hunt of being a force on the court.

Bringing in an assistant with Midwest and Duke ties is never a bad thing.

We now know who Ohio State’s head basketball coach is going to be (SPOILER: it’s Chris Holtmann), but we don’t know exactly what’s going to happen with the assistant coaches. But if one national report is right, at least one is likely to make the trip from Indy to Columbus.

According to Jon Rothstein, Butler assistant Mike Schrage is likely joining the Buckeyes.

Mike Schrage is expected to be a part of Chris Holtmann's staff at Ohio State, per a source. Schrage was an assistant at Butler last season.

— Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) June 9, 2017

Schrage (pronounced “SHRAWG-ee” according to his bio on Butler’s website) has an impressive background. He has Midwestern ties, as an Indiana graduate, but also worked as an assistant at Stanford under Johnny Dawkins from 2008-2016. At Stanford, he served as recruiting coordinator, helping bring in 16 Top 100 players, including Chasson Randle from Illinois.

Prior to Stanford, Schrage was the Director of Basketball Operations at Duke. So he’s had a chance to learn from the best in the business.

This addition should give the Buckeyes another shot in the arm on the recruiting trail, and additional leadership.

For one, a renewed focus on Ohio and the midwest.

It’s official, Chris Holtmann is the next head coach of the Ohio State men’s basketball team. The former Butler head man, while not a huge household name, is certainly a guy that brings a lot to the table in Columbus. He’s been a head coach for six years, serving stints at Gardner-Webb, and Butler. In those six years, Holtmann has put up a 114-85 record, or just about 57%, though his best work was done in his three years at Butler, where he accumulated a 70-31 record, just under 70%.

Holtmann is usually thought of as a developer, and that’s fair, though his recruiting prowess should not be overlooked. He certainly didn’t have much of a choice to do anything but develop at Gardner-Webb, but still brought in a few decent players, and turned them into very valuable contributors in his time in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

It wasn’t until he got to Butler that Holtmann really started to show his ability as a recruiter. His first two classes were pretty standard, especially because of a lack of scholarships available, but in his final two years with the Bulldogs, Holtmann recruited at a very high level, landing a number of players with serious, power five level talent. His biggest recruiting victory came against Ohio State, when he landed one of the Buckeye’s top targets, four-star forward Kyle Young out of Massillon.

Holtmann may not be the kind of big name that people were (unrealistically) expecting, but he’s probably the best possible option for Ohio State, especially given the terrible timing of this coaching search. Gene Smith said he wants to hire a coach that can recruit, because recruiting is the “lifeblood of the program”, and Holtmann absolutely fits that requirement.

The first big test will be what Holtmann is able to do for the 2018 recruiting class. 2018 is a deep class for Ohio talent, and thanks to decommitments, transfers and graduation, the Buckeyes have plenty of scholarships to distribute.

Butler has already offered big names like four-star combo guard Dwayne Cohill and four-star small forward Jerome Hunter. Butler had also recruited former Ohio State commit Justin Ahrens. There’s plenty of high level talent, especially at the wings, out there, and if Holtmann can lock some of it up, Ohio State’s rebuild will get a lot easier.

It’s hard to know exactly what Holtmann will do in Columbus, which is why it’s important to withhold judgement for a few years. He’s getting an eight year contract, which usually means that Ohio State is trusting him to rebuild the program. Rebuilds take a few years, and it’ll likely get worse, at least on the court, before it gets better. However, if what he did at Butler is any indication, Holtmann has the ability to recruit very well, and putting him in a talent rich area, at a school with all the resources you could possibly ask for should yield some very good results.

There’s a lot we can learn from history, in all situations, and that’s true in sports as well. Holtmann’s history says that he can develop players, regardless of their recruiting rankings. With how loaded the state of Ohio is for the next few years, if Holtmann can lock down the top in-state talent, and develop like he did at Butler and Garder-Webb, Ohio State will return to where they once were under Thad Matta, sooner, rather than later.

The Buckeyes finally have their man.

After a search that was longer, and certainly crazier than expected, the Buckeyes reportedly finally have their man.

According to Adam Jardy at the Columbus Dispatch, Butler’s Chris Holtmann will be the next Ohio State coach, and will be introduced at a press conference later today.

Holtmann wasn’t Ohio State’s first choice, as the Buckeyes went after Sean Miller, Chris Mack, and others, and then got turned down by Creighton’s Greg McDermott after he was reportedly offered the position Wednesday night. But all of that will be forgotten if Holtmann is successful in Columbus. And based on his background, there’s good reason to think he will.

Holtmann has done a solid job at Butler, racking up a 70-31 record over the last three seasons, each of which resulted in a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Last year, the Bulldogs earned a 4 seed, their highest in program history, en route to a Sweet Sixteen appearance. He also was recognized as the Coach of the Year by collegeinsider.com last season, a particularly impressive award, given that it included coaches in D1, D2, D3 and NAIA.

Prior to working at Butler, Holtmann was an assistant at Ohio, and the head coach at Gardner-Webb.

Holtmann isn’t a huge name, but he has a ton of success recruiting the Midwest, including Ohio, and has won a lot of games in a difficult conference. After the way this search has gone, that has to be considered a win for the Buckeyes.

There was a Buckeye presence at a satellite camp in the Houston area.

It has been a bit of a whirlwind in the world of Ohio State football recruiting. Landing top prospects to the 2018 class and sending out offers to future 2019 stars, Urban Meyer and his staff haven’t missed a beat. With camp season here, the staff certainly doesn’t have plans on stopping their momentum. In fact, with the incredible run they are currently having in their 2018 class, look for Ohio State to continue cementing what looks to be the nation’s top overall class when all's said and done come February 2018. It’s a great time to be an Ohio State Buckeye.

Texas is the move

There’s roughly five states Urban Meyer has had his way in when it comes to recruiting at a greater rate in terms of quantity. Besides the obvious, Ohio, Florida, Georgia and New Jersey, Texas is a state that Meyer and his staff have recruited at record pace. Landing three of the top players in 2017, the Buckeyes have a serious presence in the Lone Star State. However, former Ohio State quarterback coach Tom Herman is now in his first season as the Texas headmaster and plans on keeping his prized in-state studs home. A feat Meyer is no stranger to, plucking the best from the South has been something that hasn’t been relatively hard for him. Will Herman change this pace? We may find out soon enough.

Yesterday, Ohio State and bossman Meyer made their presence known when they attended a Houston area satellite camp where many of the top prospects were able to make a name for themselves. The one who caught the most attention: five-star cornerback Anthony Cook (Houston / Lamar). A 6-foot, 170-pound ball-hawk, Cook is ranked as the second best corner in the country and the top player in the entire state of Texas for the 2018 class. Easily the top talent at the Houston satellite, Meyer wanted to keep Cook close just to make sure he still knows he’s their top defensive back priority for this current cycle.

— Mark Berman (@MarkBermanFox26) June 8, 2017

With nearly 40 scholarship offers, the thinking is that Cook is actually down to a final two schools and deciding between Ohio State and Texas. Sure to be the first real battle between Tom Herman and his former boss, the current crystal ball predictions have Ohio State running away with the odds to land Cook. A final decision is thought to come this January at the U.S. Army All-American game, but with constant reports confirming that Cook is his own type of person and tends to shy away from the media attention, anything is possible. The good news: Ohio State is sitting in great position (and rightfully so) as they continue to send their defensive backs to the NFL every passing season.

More of the same in Texas?

As previously mentioned, Thursday was dedicated to the Buckeye staff checking out the top talent around Houston. Besides the obvious Anthony Cook sweepstakes, a 2019 receiver made it a point to be seen by the Buckeyes. Jalen Curry (Stafford, TX /Stafford) is thought to be one of the top receivers in the 2019 class, and he was certainly worth watching as he competed at the satellite camp.

#Zone6 #GoBucks ⭕pic.twitter.com/SglRtLHc4n

— Jalen Curry5 (@jc5_4lyfee) June 8, 2017

The 6-foot-4, 200-pound deep threat currently has nearly 25 offers and it’s easy to see why. With the size college coaches covet, Curry is sure to be a serious target the next two years on and off the field. With offers from the likes of Auburn, Florida State, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Georgia and more, Ohio State could become a serious player in this recruitment if they were to offer. Certainly seems as if Curry would consider the Buckeyes too if this were to be the case.

Camp season has begun

Later today, Ohio State will host their one-day position football camp which officially gets their camp season underway. With several Ohio targets always in attendance, one-day camps are always a great way for “bubble” type prospects to get in front of the staff and earn themselves the highly coveted Buckeye offer.

In attendance for today’s camp will include a current 2018 offensive lineman commit, Max Wray. A four-star pledge, today will mark the first visit back to Columbus for Wray since his spring game visit this past April. The only pledge said to be in attendance, Wray will compete, but may even be able to recruit himself a bit as the lone 2018 Buckeye commit.

Also in attendance today will include three-star running back Master Teague, three-star defensive end Jayson Oweh, three-star corner Marcus Hooker and more. It’s unlikely a commit will come today, but it’s certainly possible for the staff to like what they see and dish out their latest offers to any in attendance.

The Buckeyes continue to look to the Big East for their next coach.

He may not have been their first choice. Or their second choice. But according to recent reports, the Buckeyes may have zeroed in on their next choice to replace Thad Matta as Ohio State’s basketball coach.

Per multiple media reports, Ohio State’s top target appears to be Butler’s Chris Holtmann.

Ohio State has zeroed in on Butler's Chris Holtmann, per a source. Deal could be done as early as Friday.

Plus, the Butler beat writer for the Indy Star tweeted that the two are “in talks”, although nothing is finalized yet.

BREAKING: Source confirms #Butler's Chris Holtmann in talks with Ohio State to become its new basketball coach. Not done yet, source says.

— David Woods (@DavidWoods007) June 9, 2017

Holtmann has done a solid job at Butler, racking up a 70-31 record over the last three seasons, each of which resulted in a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Last year, the Bulldogs earned a four seed, their highest in program history, en route to a Sweet Sixteen appearance.

Prior to working at Butler, Holtmann was an assistant at Ohio, and the head coach at Gardner-Webb, where he led them to a CIT bid. He left Gardner-Webb to serve as an assistant at Butler.

Given how chaotic this coaching search has been, ending up with a successful, consistent coach with midwestern recruiting ties and a record of developing and evaluating talent well seems like it would be a great result for Ohio State.

The current Golden State Warriors assistant coach has no previous college coaching experience.

Another NBA coach on Ohio State's radar, sources tell @TheVertical: Golden State assistant Mike Brown. So far, no contact has been made.

— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojVerticalNBA) June 8, 2017

After rumors of Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg being a candidate, and Creighton head coach Greg McDermott deciding to stay with the Blue Jays, Golden State assistant coach Mike Brown is the latest name attached Ohio State’s vacant head coaching position. Brown is currently in Cleveland as Golden State prepares for Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday night, and Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch reported Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith is planning on going to Cleveland today to speak with Brown.

Brown was born in Columbus, but has no previous college coaching experience. After serving as an assistant with San Antonio, Washington, and Indiana, Brown got his NBA head coaching job with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2005. In 2007, Brown reached the NBA Finals, and in 2009 was named NBA Coach of the Year. After being fired by the Cavaliers in 2010, Brown coached the Los Angeles Lakers for 71 games between 2011-12 before returning to Cleveland for the 2013-14 season. While Brown replaced Luke Walton as an assistant coach for Golden State this year, he has been acting head coach for periods of time for the Warriors during the regular season and playoffs due to chronic back pain that head coach Steve Kerr is dealing with.

“I feel good. Just learning plays, the formations, my role as a receiver here and as a teammate. It’s a big opportunity so you’ve just got to come out here and execute every time when you get the chance.”

Houston Texans wide receiver Braxton Miller via Patrick Murphy, Bucknuts

Braxton Miller is not only gearing up for his second season with the Houston Texans, but also is readying for his third season at wide receiver, after switching for quarterback to receiver before his senior season at Ohio State. Miller got his feet wet just a little bit in his rookie season for Houston, hauling in 15 catches and a touchdown before his season was cut short by injury. Expectations for Miller will be higher this year, especially since he is working with one of the best slot receivers in NFL history, Wes Welker.

Current Texans head coach Bill O’Brien was an offense assistant with the New England Patriots for five seasons, and in four of those five seasons Welker hauled in at least 100 passes. Now it looks like Miller is being groomed to replicate the Welker role in Houston’s offense. With Miller still trying to adjust to being a receiver at the professional level, the process could be accelerated because of how closely he can work with Welker this year. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Miller become a key part of the Houston offense this year with the work he is putting in during the offseason.

“We’re really happy with how much Nick has progressed since arriving on campus this year. Coach (Ashley) Muffet has done a brilliant job with getting him ready for this level of competition. Nick is a premium thrower, and we’re glad to have him for one more year.”

Karen Dennis, Ohio State director of track and field and cross country

Yesterday at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Nick Demaline was able to bring a bronze medal back to Columbus with his performance in the shot put. The junior used a 20.08m throw, his best of the day, to earn the third place finish. Demaline became the first Buckeye to earn All-American honors since J.C. Murasky did so in 2015. With his performance in both the indoor and outdoor shot put, Demaline moved into top five in program history. Demaline was the only Ohio State athlete to score points on Day 1 of the NCAA Championships, and the Buckeyes sit in a tie for 14th place with six points.

The Ohio State men’s 4x400m relay team was able to secure an automatic bid into Friday night’s finals with their time of 3:03:59 in the second of three qualifying heats on Wednesday. The 4x100m relay team set a school record with a time of 38.92 in their heat, but the time was just ninth-best in qualifying, which left them one spot away from a chance in the final. Rachel Weber in the 800m and Maggie Barrie in the 400m dash and the 4x400m relay will be the next Buckeyes to keep an eye on at the NCAA Championships later tonight.
