A pair of prospects named the Buckeyes on their potential college list over the weekend.

With Nike’s The Opening going on in Oregon, of course some kind of Ohio State related recruiting news broke this weekend.

Planning to announce his verbal pledge relatively soon, four-star wide receiver Elijah Moore let the world know on Sunday morning that he will continue his education and football playing days at either Ohio State, Miami, or Ole Miss when he decides on his final choice.

❗️Elijah moore❗️ (@e_moore03) July 2, 2017

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Moore, who attends St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has been linked more with the aforementioned Hurricanes and Rebels than the Buckeyes, but OSU does have one thing going for them: their pipeline into the Raiders program.

Even though all signs definitely point towards Moore staying closer to the Sunshine State at the moment, Ohio State has a lot of success recruiting players from St. Thomas Aquinas to come to Columbus.

In recent years Joey Bosa, Nick Bosa, Damon Arnette and Trevon Grimes are just a few of the players the Buckeyes successfully plucked from the national powerhouse Raiders.

At least one future Buckeye is trying to recruit Moore to join him in Ohio State’s class of 2018. Five-star defensive end Brenton Cox didn’t shy away from telling Elijah where he thinks he should end up when it’s all said and done.

Taylor names top 10

In what is becoming a near daily occurrence, the Ohio State football program once again finds their name on the current leader list of a top rated recruit.

Dropping his top 10 via his Twitter page on Saturday, four-star rated tight end Leonard Taylor, who is also talented enough to end up playing on the defensive line on the college level, announced he is considering not just Ohio State, but also Alabama, Louisville, Michigan, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Penn State, Oklahoma, and the University of Kentucky.

Once thought as a near lock to verbally commit to Ohio State after decommitting from Michigan early on during the recruiting process, the 6-foot-5, 246-pound Springfield (OH) standout has recently been looked as a Kentucky lean.

Buckeyes offer 2018 forward

One-time verbal pledge Dane Goodwin of Upper Arlington wasn’t the only class of 2018 prospect to check out the new Ohio State basketball program over the weekend. While in Columbus to get more familiar with Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes, senior small forward Talen Horton-Tucker left the 614 with a scholarship offer to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray.

A three-star rated prospect from Chicago’s Simeon High School, the 6-foot-5, 210-pound Horton-Tucker, who is currently considered the 59th small forward and 253rd overall prospect in the class of 2018, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings, now reportedly holds offers from the likes of OSU, DePaul, Iowa State, Missouri, Northwestern and Xavier.

Helping lead Simeon deep into the Illinois state playoffs last season, Talen averaged 12 points, six rebounds, and three steals a contest for the 27-4 Wolverines as a junior.

Quick Hits

  • Big time 2018 Ohio State target Anthony Cook told Scout.com that he will name his top three soon. The five-star cornerback from Houston, TX, has had many Buckeye fans sitting with their fingers crossed ever since his visit to Columbus in the spring. Texas, LSU, Clemson, Baylor, and Florida State are just a few of the other schools that were named alongside the Buckeyes on Cook’s top 10.
  • Another class of 2018 defensive back is close to trimming his down to potential suitors. According to ESPN Recruiting analyst Tom VanHaaren, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, Miami, and Clemson will definitely make the cut for four-star cornerback Tyson Campbell of American Heritage High School (FL).
  • 2018 Buckeye commit Jaiden Woodbey was interviewed at The Opening. The safety’s interview can be seen below.

Oregon indefinitely suspends WR Darren Carrington after DUII arrest

Oregon has indefinitely suspended Darren Carrington after the wide receivers was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, The Oregonian reported on Saturday.
.
.
.
While Carrington’s arrest is his first disciplinary issue since Taggart’s January hiring, it does make one wonder what exactly he’d have to do to get kicked off the Ducks’ roster. Carrington was ineligible for Oregon’s College Football Playoff Championship loss to Ohio State — a game the Ducks lost in large part due to a plethora of dropped passes — was cited for open container in October 2015 and was accused of breaking a man’s arm in a Halloween incident last year.

Sounds like a great kid. I'm sure that he really didn't break some dude's arm. He just happened to be on the same street corner where the guy fell... and was probably holding that same guy's container for him. :eye roll:

Oh, what a wonderful time it is to be an Ohio State fan! You may be wondering how can one say this after seeing their beloved Buckeyes get absolutely blown by Clemson in their last game. Well, it’s easy to be optimistic about the future of your program when it recruits as well as Urban Meyer has/is.

Last year I predicted that Ohio State would end Alabama’s six-year streak of having the No. 1 recruiting class in the country. Needless to say, I was wrong. But I am almost 100% certain that the Buckeyes will dethrone the Crimson Tide in that department with its 2018 class.

If one were looking for an example of a quintessential recruiting class it would look a lot like Ohio State’s does at the moment. The Buckeyes currently have fourteen commits in its 2018 class thus far, which is ranked No. 1 in the country at this juncture, and the average rating per commit is 0.9530 according to the 247sports.com composite rankings. Expect the class to only get better in due time.

Players that have already committed to Ohio State are five-star defensive linemen, Tyron Vincent and Brenton Cox, four-star safeties Jaiden Woodbey and Josh Proctor, four-star linebackers Dallas Gant and Teradja Mitchell, four-star offensive linemen Max Wray and Matthew Jones, four-star running backs Jaelen Gill and Brian Snead, Four-star dual-threat quarterback Emory Jones, four-star cornerback Sevyn Banks, four-star defensive end Andrew Chatfield, and three-star running back Master Teague.

This is merely a small sample size of just how good this class could get. Allow me to present to you what would, and very well could, be the perfect finish to Ohio State’s 2018 class, as each of the potential future Buckeyes I will mention is crystal ball favorites to pick Ohio State.

The Five Stars:

Along with the two five-star prospects that have already committed to Ohio State, the Bucks are in good shape –and are the favorites – to land five-star defensive end Micah Parsons, five-star offensive Tackle Jackson Carmen, and five-star cornerback Anthony Cook.

Parsons, the one-time Penn State commit, would be the fifth five-star defensive lineman the Bucks will have landing in the last three recruiting classes, and the third one in this class alone. Before he even verbally committed to Penn State, he seemed to have narrowed his choices down to Ohio State and Penn State. After having de-committed from Penn State, however, many speculate that he will end up playing his college ball in Columbus. That would give the Buckeyes by far the nastiest d-line haul in the country.

Perhaps the biggest (no pun intended) “must-get” prospect from Ohio that Urban Meyer has targeted since his arrival at Ohio State, Jackson Carmen could very well be the best offensive lineman in the country. Carmen is the No. 1 ranked offensive tackle in the country according to the 247sports composite rankings, and the majority(66.7%) of recruiting experts that have cast their crystal ball on him have him going to Ohio State, despite him stating that Clemson was his leader.

Anthony Cook, the nation’s eight-ranked prospect overall and second-ranked cornerback, has been high on Ohio State from the get-go as well. At the moment Ohio State seems to be his leader, but it may be hard to lure him away from in-state school Texas and its new high profile head coach Tom Herman, whose offensive wizardry helped Urban Meyer and Ohio State win a national title with its third-string quarterback in 2014.

Nevertheless, it’s exciting to see such high-profile prospects showing so much interest in Ohio State, which has become a regularity under the tutelage of Meyer.

The Four Stars:

Four-star targets whose crystal ball predictors have favoring Ohio State are Tyson Campbell, Kamryn Babb, Jeremy Ruckert, Tyreke Smith, L’Christian Smith, Michael Harris, Christopher Oats, and K’Vaughan Pope.

Oats, Tyreke and L’Christian Smith are three prospects that the Buckeyes are hoping to keep in Ohio. L’Christian is listed as an athlete, but will likely play either wide receiver or h-back in college. One of a small handful of receivers that are showing strong interest in Ohio State in this class, he is a top priority of Urban Meyer’s. And, like Jalyn Holmes a few years ago, Tyreke Smith is a four-star Ohio defensive end that the Buckeyes are really high on. Christopher Oats, on the other hand, seems to have an equal amount of interest in Cincinnati University as he does in Ohio State. He is the second-best linebacker prospect in Ohio.

Along with L’Christian Smith, Kamryn Babb is another four-star receiver who’s favored to go to Ohio State, and is a crucial piece to its 2018 class, as it is starving for receivers at this point. The country’s tenth-best receiver and second-best player in the state of Missouri, Babb is considered a heavy Ohio State lean. Another Ohio State lean that could potentially help the Bucks out in the receiving corp. is Jeremy Ruckert, the second-best tight end in the country. All signs are pointing toward the 6’5.5″ 238 lbs. New Yorker becoming a Buckeye.

Lastly, Tyson Campbell is the nation’s third-ranked cornerback, stemming from Fort Lauderdale, Florida’s American Heritage high school, the very place where Ohio State landed Torrance Gibson in its 2015 class. Ohio State is deadlocked with Miami (Fl) University as Campbell’s leader in crystal ball predictions, with five out of thirteen (38%) of them. Campbell could be yet another stud that the Buckeyes add to its already stacked secondary.

So, in conclusion, you may be wondering just how Ohio State’s class would look if all of the players that are crystal ball favorites actually did wind up picking Ohio State. Don’t worry, I already did the math for you. Assuming there are no de-commitments, the addition of the prospects mentioned above would give the Buckeyes’ 2018 class a composite score of 323.25.

In other words, Ohio State may very well be in the process of piecing together the greatest class in247sports.com history!

Two transfers, and eight scholarship players makes this Buckeye squad a work in progress.

If you ever take the drive from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, a roughly 270-mile adventure, you will feel as if you will never reach the destination. Literally, once you get out of the City of Angels, you will run into (open) desert freeway with a handful of small little towns sprinkled throughout the tumbleweed and Joshua tree-laden land.

In a way, that tiring drive from a city of bright lights to another city of even brighter lights can describe the way that Ohio State basketball is going. With the move from Thad Matta (who marched two squads to the Final Four) to Chris Holtmann, the destination (success) is clear in the minds of the fans and power brokers of OSU- however, getting there is going to be the tricky part.

Like the desert, the recruiting world in July isn’t really stocked with talent looking to find a new home. Or let me rephrase: Talent looking to stay in Columbus. Freshman Braxton Beverly and redshirt freshman Derek Funderburk decommitted from the OSU basketball program, leaving Holtmann with eight (yes, eight) scholarship student-athletes heading into the season.

While coaching changes can sometimes create roster uncertainty, the fact that there has been a constant stream of departures from the program over the past couple years is alarming. The whole 2015 recruiting class, one that included Daniel Giddens, Austin Grandstaff, JaQuan Lyle, Mickey Mitchell and A.J. Harris, is gone. Lyle quit the basketball team back in April, and the others from the 2015 class all transferred out. All of this happening with Matta at the helm of the program.

Now, albeit not on the same scale as what Matta endured, Holtmann has watched two players leave the program–in addition to seeing a 2018 recruit decommit. No matter how you look at this, it’s weird; this kind of stuff doesn’t happen to Ohio State. Last season, we all witnessed what happens when your programs suffers from multiple transfers. One has to wonder if, even with a new coach, the upcoming season is going to be as dysfunctional as the last.

Holtmann has his work cut out for him. I’ve already come to terms that this year is going to be a work in progress, and it seems that leveling the program and rebuilding from scratch will be the best option for Holtmann to have the most success. However, you can’t rebuild collegiate basketball squads like you can rebuild a house. This process is going to take some time– so don’t be upset if the Buckeyes barely squeak into the NIT for the next season or two.

Getting a solid recruiting class or two would be a big step for Holtmann to take in bringing Buckeye basketball out of the bottom of the Big Ten conference standings. The other big steps rest in changing the culture of the program. The process of OSU basketball going from Final Four contender to missing the NIT didn’t happen overnight. Eradicating that feeling of complacency should be near the top of Holtmann’s list.

Like the trip from LA to Vegas, the destination has already been determined. You will spend time getting from point A to point B, get bored of watching desert land, and become slightly agitated from the lost time of sitting in LA traffic. (Whether it is 6:30 p.m. or 2 p.m., expect gridlock around Los Angeles. I put that right up there with death and taxes as things that are guaranteed in life.)

Ohio State is on its own journey to getting back to the days of making Final Four runs. They’ve already gotten past that figurative “gridlock in L.A. phase” by letting Matta go in favor of getting Holtmann. Now, they’re on the open highway, but are plagued by the flat tires of departures and transfers. While you can’t move as fast on spare tires, you can at least still move forward. That’s what Chris Holtmann is doing with this Buckeye squad. A cultural change takes time, as the team has to buy into the process. But once they do, expect Holtmann and his Bucks to be mainstays at the top of the weekly rankings and conference standings.

during the 2017 NHL Draft at the United Center on June 24, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois.

The photo taken above was from the 2017 NHL Draft where Daniel Alfredsson and his sons worked the event representing the Ottawa Senators organization.

He doesn’t look like a man who’s ready to walk away from his gig, but just one week later, Alfredsson’s walking out the door on July 1st for the second time in the last four years.

Alfredsson departure is confirmed. He signed a one-year extension last year #Sens https://t.co/kwc6DY2v3h

— Bruce Garrioch (@SunGarrioch) July 1, 2017

Through an official press release by the Senators, Alfredsson released the following statement:

After two enjoyable years learning about the front office of hockey with the Senators, I’m pleased to pass along that I’ve made the decision to step away from the game and will take this time to evaluate what professional challenge I will pursue next.”

“I want to thank the Senators for the opportunity; it has enabled me to understand the type of commitments required to work in hockey should I determine that to be my future path. Our first order of business is getting established in our new home in Ottawa and returning to Gothenburg, with my family, to visit Swedish family and friends for the summer. We look forward to sharing the details of what’s next for the Alfredsson family in the future.”

The timing of the announcement was out of left field and left everyone with more questions than it provided answers.

Fortunately in this go-around, news of Alfie’s departure won’t be met with news that the Senators have traded for Bobby Ryan.

Why Alfredsson left was not immediately made clear, but Sportsnet’s John Shannon was quick to point out that something was rotten in Denmark.

This story has the makings of some real intrigue. Kids were on stage for club at draft. https://t.co/tE35QuQjmz

— John Shannon (@JSportsnet) July 1, 2017

Shortly thereafter, Shannon tweeted the following:

Daniel Alfredsson takes the high road: pic.twitter.com/4OdPmunGjM

— John Shannon (@JSportsnet) July 1, 2017

It is weird for a prominent NHL personality to throw something out there about Alfredsson taking “the high road” if there was no substance to back it up, especially after the postseason that Ottawa just had.

In today’s brief media availability, general manager Pierre Dorion failed to add much context to Alfredsson’s decision beyond the fact that Alfie called Dorion last night to make him aware of his choice.

Yeah, I was a little bit surprised. I think from a personal note, Daniel and I were the same age. He was slightly a better hockey player than me, but we talked yesterday evening and he indicated to me that he wanted to leave the organization for now. The door will always be open for Daniel. Daniel’s input over the last two years has been tremendous. We’ve really developed a really good friendship. We’ve really developed a really good professional working relationship. Wherever Daniel goes, he’s a pretty bright guy, he’s going to have success. He just felt that at this point in time, he just wanted to step away. He just bought a house. I know he’s going back to Sweden tomorrow, so I think that he just wanted to take a step back.”

When asked whether Alfredsson thoroughly explained his decision to leave, Dorion could not elaborate.

“No, he didn’t really give me a reason. He was really appreciative of everything that he’s learned over the last two years being part of our management group. His input was always appreciated from my side of things, especially being so close to being a former player and stepping in. No real reason, he just felt that it was the right thing to do at this point in time. I really respect him. He’s beaten me at golf every time and he’s taken my money, so I even respect him more, but he’s going to have success in whatever he does.”

Whatever the reason, Alfredsson’s departure creates a lot of questions: Why did he leave? Will the Senators replace him the front office? Is this on Eugene Melnyk? If Alfie took the high road, what’s the real story behind his decision to leave?

Perhaps most importantly, what kind of impact will this have on Erik Karlsson’s desire to remain an Ottawa Senator?

It’s terrifying to think about the greatest player in franchise history walking out that door when he hits unrestricted free agency in July of 2019, but who could blame him?

His owner fails to inspire confidence, there’s no guarantee that this team will contend in the near future and in a world where we’re wondering about loyalty, Karlsson’s mentor and good friend has just fled the organization for the second time in four years.

Happy July 1st, everyone.

in the third period of Game Two of the Western Conference Final during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs at Honda Center on May 14, 2017 in Anaheim, California.

The Ottawa Senators have found themselves a new fourth line centre.

Hearing that expected deal for Nate Thompson to Ottawa Senators is a 2 year deal at $1.65M AAV. #TSN

— Aaron Ward (@NHL_AaronWard) July 1, 2017

According to Aaron Ward, the Senators officially turned the page on Chris Kelly’s career and brought Nate Thompson into the fold.

The 32-year old Thompson has played parts of 10 seasons in the NHL and he spent his last three seasons with the Anaheim Ducks. In 30 games last season, he tallied a goal and an assist.

If you’re judging Thompson by the numbers on the back of his hockey card, you’re going to be underwhelmed. He’s not really renowned for his offence. He set career highs in goals (10) and points (25) playing for the Tampa Bay Lightning during Guy Boucher’s first season as an NHL coach (2010-11), but that was almost seven years ago. He has not registered more than 20 points in any of the seasons since.

What Thompson represents is a left-shooting centre who plays a physical brand of hockey and is not afraid to drop the gloves. Last season, he averaged 2.3 hits per game and historically, he’s been a decent faceoff guy. He owns a career percentage is 52.1-percent in the circle. (Note: last season, Thompson had a 53.1-percent faceoff success rate, but Ryan Kesler was Anaheim’s best faceoff guy who took the bulk of the tough draws.)

Having moved on from Chris Kelly and with Viktor Stalberg’s future in limbo, Thompson can help replace some of those minutes on the penalty kill. Last season, he also averaged 1:35 of shorthanded ice time per game.

Beyond these things, the obvious connection to Guy Boucher or Thompson’s presence affording the organization the flexibility to take its time with its centre prospects, I don’t understand the signing.

I guess anytime you have the opportunity to sign and overpay a 32-year old centre who missed 51 games last season because he had surgery on his Achilles tendon, you have to do it.

Between the new extensions for Ryan Dzingel and Jean-Gabriel Pageau, it’s safe to assume that Thompson’s deal essentially exhausts the $4.9-million that was created when Vegas claimed Marc Methot in the expansion draft.

It would be one thing if the Senators had the ability to spend to the cap ceiling or this fourth line centre was actually good, but neither condition is true. The Senators are always pressed up against their internal cap and a replacement level player should probably earn half of what Thompson will now for each of the next two seasons.

It’s the most recent example of this organization’s struggle with its impulsiveness and willingness to commit too many dollars and too much term to redundant veterans who congest the depths of this roster.

Ignoring the fact that Thompson is coming off major surgery, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that his performance was trending down over recent years.

Not only were his production relative to ice time rates down considerably, the underlying possession metrics have only gotten worse and they were never strong to begin with.

Considering the player is frequently on the wrong side of shots, shots on goal and goals scored whenever he’s on the ice at five-on-five, it’s troubling seeing the kind of money that the tight-walleted Senators are throwing at him.

Spending $4.1-million so that Alex Burrows and Nate Thompson can hold down the fourth line is a poor allocation of their limited resources.

Understandably with the poor development of some of their recent first round picks might have compelled management to look for a buffer who could insulate these prospects until they are ready, but the development of players like Logan Brown, Colin White or even a Nick Paul has nothing to do with the failed development of players like Curtis Lazar. It has to do with the individual’s makeup, skill set, intelligence and willingness to put in the work to improve.

Considering how poor of a player Thompson is, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that one of their younger centres does not play Thompson out of a job with a strong camp.

If I was a businessman like Eugene Melnyk, I would have a hard time stomaching the fact that management keeps throwing considerable assets at superfluous veterans when it can get the same results for a fraction of the price. Or as one friend put it, “I can’t imagine being the owner of a team whose management group repeatedly ignores the latest data that can streamline their process.”

As I wrote in the end of the year eulogy for the Senators, despite the results, the Senators’ postseason run did nothing to assuage any concerns I had for the team’s process. This signing does nothing to remedy those feelings, if anything, it supports my concern.

LGHL 5-star DE Brenton Cox eager to be a part of Ohio State’s “magic vibe”

The future Buckeye is staying focused after his commitment.

Five-star defensive end Brenton Cox has unfinished business at Georgia's Stockbridge High School. Heading into his senior year, Cox wants to go out on top and win a state championship like so many other players he knows.

Cox isn't like other players, though. He's one of the best rush ends in the country and is determined to show skeptics why he’s not only deserving of his five-star status, but of his scholarship to Ohio State.

The Georgia native took some time out of his day to speak with us about his upcoming senior season, why he chose OSU over Alabama and Georgia, and the Buckeyes "magic vibe."

(Note: Remarks lightly edited for clarity.)

Land-Grant Holy Land: You were born and raised in Georgia, and have lived in the South your whole life. Why go against the grain and commit to OSU?

Brenton Cox: For me, it was really about the outcome of everything. I was trying to see who would prepare me to be a first-round or top-five type of player, rather than going later in the draft.

LGHL: It's no secret that you were one of the most highly sought after recruits in the 2018 class. Was your final decision difficult considering how many schools were recruiting you?

Cox: It was actually hard, really hard. I knew I wanted to get it out of the way, but I didn't know if I would be making a mistake or if I was doing the right thing. I just had to pray on it. It was a really hard choice, but I knew I would be accepted either way.

LGHL: Were there any schools you were leaning towards committing to besides OSU?

Cox: It was Georgia that I thought would be the best place for me. The same goes for Alabama, they kind of have the same defense. Auburn was the only other one. That's it, though.

LGHL: Is it tough to stay focused knowing that you've essentially punched your ticket to OSU?

Cox: For me, it was just getting one obstacle out of the way. Now I just got to keep the team working hard and win a state championship. Everyone knows that I'm committed to OSU, but now everyone wants to see what the OSU commit can do. So, it's never over.

LGHL: One of your biggest strengths is that you’re not only an insanely gifted athlete, but you’re versatile enough to play all along the defensive line. Where do you see yourself fitting in on the Buckeyes defense?

Cox: Pretty much the rush end. I know I'm going to put on a lot of weight and I put on weight easily, I'm already faster than everybody else, but I see myself fitting in at defensive end. I'm just trying to get stronger and faster. I really want to perfect my game. Everything will come with time and with the coaches in the program. I just worry about stuff I can control.

LGHL: We know what Brenton Cox can do on the football field, but what else will you bring to the table as a Buckeye?

Cox: I'm going to bring hard work. They have dogs at OSU. They kind of have a magic vibe or something over there. Being from the South, they don't really have anybody from Georgia, so I'm going to bring that type of game up there.

LGHL: Are there any players you try to model your game after?

Cox: I model my game after -- he's in high school -- Josh Sweat. He goes to Florida State right now. Also, Lorenzo Carter, I like his speed off the edge and him just being a dog. I also look at Marvin Wilson, who just graduated, but I like the way he plays, too.

LGHL: Paul George has been a hot topic in the sports world. You'll be living in Ohio soon, so do you think the Cavaliers should trade for him?

Cox: Everybody wants to be on a great team. I honestly like the super teams, they remind of the Dream Team. I think they should get him. Kevin Love lets you down sometimes, but you know, when he's hot, he's hot, so they should try and keep him, too.
