The turmoil in the program over the last few months has already cost the Buckeyes two of the top four Ohio recruits in the 2018 class.

It looks like the cost of Ohio State basketball's June coaching change could be a great 2018 Ohio recruiting class https://t.co/QOFc7Omb6r

— Bill Landis (@BillLandis25) July 6, 2017

What a difference just a few months can make. After Ohio State’s 2016-17 season ended in March with a loss to Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament, there were plenty of questions surrounding Thad Matta and the program, but the future looked bright with a number of top Ohio recruits in the fold. Then the dominoes started to fall in April when Darius Bazley, the top recruit from Ohio in the 2018 recruiting class, decommitted from Ohio State. The on-court and recruiting issues of the Buckeyes were just too much for Bazley to ignore, and earlier this week he committed to Syracuse.

After Ohio State and Thad Matta parted ways last month, Dane Goodwin, the fourth-ranked recruit in Ohio in the 2018 recruiting class, decided to explore his options and decommitted from Ohio State. While Goodwin did give new head coach Chris Holtmann a chance to state the case for him to recommit to the Buckeyes, the Upper Arlington native decided to commit to Notre Dame, instead.

All is not lost for Ohio State when it comes to the 2018 recruiting class, though. It is likely that the Buckeyes will be a part of 4-star guard Dwayne Cohill’s Top 10 list on Friday. Cohill already has a bit of a relationship with Holtmann, who was recruiting Cohill when he was still the head coach at Butler. Four-star wing Jerome Hunter is considering Ohio State as well. There might be some early growing pains with Holtmann in Columbus as he tries to assemble his team, but if Ohio State is able to hit on these recruits, momentum could shift in the favor of the Buckeyes quickly.

“Raekwon [McMillan] was one of my favorite players in this class.”

-Luke Easterling, Editor of Draft Wire via Antwan Staley, Dolphins Wire

Former Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan hasn’t even made it to training camp with the Miami Dolphins yet, but the expectations are already high for the former Buckeye. McMillan has impressed during Miami’s organized team activities and team minicamp so far, as he’s gotten plenty of reps with linebacker Koa Misi still recovering from offseason neck surgery. With Misi on the sidelines for now, McMillan has been training at every linebacker position, including middle linebacker.

While it is projected that Lawrence Timmons will start at middle linebacker for the Dolphins, it is looking more and more likely that McMillan is in line to win one of the outside linebacker starting positions, opposite Kiko Alonso. This likely won’t come as much of a surprise to those who watched McMillan during his time at Ohio State, as the linebacker was the Buckeye’s top tackler the past two seasons. Even though there will likely be some adjustment to the speed of the NFL, McMillan’s football IQ should help him transition quicker than most, and he should be able to make a name for himself early on in his NFL career.

Counting down the Top 100 Big Ten football players: The Top 10 https://t.co/h4T9KPvnB3 pic.twitter.com/t9Kc33Kmmc

— Land Of 10 (@landof10) July 5, 2017

The fine folks over at Land of 10 recently ranked the Top 100 Big Ten football players ever, and on Wednesday they capped off their list with the Top 10. To the surprise of no one, Ohio State is featured prominently in the Top 10, with Buckeyes taking home three of those spots. The first Buckeye in the Top 10 is Howard “Hopalong” Cassady, who was ranked as the ninth best Big Ten player in history. Cassady won the Heisman Trophy in 1955, and at the time, his margin of victory was the largest in history.

Coming in at sixth on the list was offensive lineman Orlando Pace. It was evident early on that Pace would make quite an impact in Columbus when he became just the second true freshman ever to start for Ohio State in the season opener. Pace not only won the Lombardi Award in 1995 and 1996, but he also took home the Outland Trophy in 1996. During the 1996 season, Pace finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting, marking the highest finish for an offensive or defensive lineman since Hugh Green finished second in 1980.

Topping the list of the best players in Big Ten history is the only player to win the Heisman Trophy twice, running back Archie Griffin. During Griffin’s time with Ohio State, the Buckeyes never dropped below ninth in the rankings, and won the Big Ten in each of Griffin’s four years. Griffin rushed for at least 100 yards in 31 straight games, a record which still stands. Griffin amassed 5,589 rushing yards as a Buckeye, a school record that likely will never be broken.

Taking a look at the most important Buckeyes for the 2017 season, beginning with number 10.

When looking at the 2017 depth chart compared to the 2016 depth chart, there are noticeable holes, but the team is in a much better place now than it was entering the 2016 season after a mass exodus of NFL departures and graduation. Using key departures, spotlighting players at important positions, leadership qualities and recognizing the depth at each position, we came up with the 10 most important players on the team. They may not be the most heralded players, or even the best players, but they will be vital to this team’s on-field success.

No. 10: Sean Nuernberger

Position: Place kicker

2016 stats: After winning place kicking duties on the National Championship team as a true freshman in 2014, Nuernberger lost the job in 2015 to graduate transfer Jack Willoughby and then again in 2016 to Tyler Durbin, a former soccer player from James Madison.

Why he’s No. 10: After Nuernberger lost the 2016 kicking duties to Durbin, the former soccer player started his lone starting season by hitting his first 16 field goals, until the Michigan game where he went 1-for-3, before finishing the season 0-for-2 against Clemson. As we have learned throughout Urban Meyer’s tenure, there won’t be very many high-pressured kicks, but they always have one-or-two games that will come down to a field goal, and Buckeye fans will not forget the last two games of last season. Nuernberger has been perfect on extra points (106-of-106), but he has struggled from distance, going 16-for-24 on field goals.

From a non-place kicking point of view, it’s clear that he does not have the leg strength for kickoffs, however he could win the job with accuracy for coffin corner kickoffs — which have been the staple of Ohio State’s special teams. With Nuernberger being the only experienced specialist on the depth chart, it’s possible he could get the call there.

Most importantly, will Nuernberger have his confidence restored for 2017, or was his confidence shattered from losing his job in back-to-back years? With the uber-talented true-freshman Blake Haubeil breathing on his neck, it’s time for Nuernberger to win the job and not let go of it. The highly touted kicker will be counted on to hit every extra point, while connecting on just about every field goal attempt. Depending on the timing of the missed kicks, if the Kentucky native can replicate Durbin’s 17-of-22 (77-percent) season, he will have lived up to expectations for this season.

Check back next week for No. 9 and No. 8

Discussing a big weekend for Ohio State recruiting on this week’s podcast.

The Opening Finals is one of the premier college football recruiting events each year, and future Ohio State Buckeyes are oftentimes the center of attention. This past weekend was no different. Eight Ohio State commits were present in Beaverton, Ore. as over 160 of the nation’s best recruits took to the field to showcase their skills in the highly competitive environment.

On this edition of The Hangout in the Holyland, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn discuss why they think the event does a good job identifying prospects (3:08), what impressed them most from the Ohio State group —including the standout performances by all-purpose back Jaelen Gill and defensive tackle Taron Vincent— (7:46), uncommitted prospects at the event on Ohio State’s radar (13:37), and where the Buckeyes’ class stands two weeks before the annual Friday Night Lights showcase in Columbus.

They also discuss SB Nation’s All-Opening team (16:10), if the 2018 class is starting to have a noticeable theme (17:52), and Patrick’s predictions for the rest of the recruiting cycle (20:45).

Pope made the announcement on Twitter.

Pope to make visits elsewhere

Three days ago, we learned that 2018 linebacker K’Vaughan Pope (Dinwiddie, VA / Dinwiddie County) was hoping to make his collegiate commitment shortly after returning home from The Opening in Beaverton, Ore. The expectation was that it was all but locked in for Ohio State to be the beneficiary of the pledge, if they were willing to accept it at this time.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder revealed to Jeremy Birmingham of Landof10.com that Ohio State was the only school on his list. “I know where I want to go — I want to go to Ohio State,” Pope relayed to Birmingham. However, unfortunately for Pope, that won’t be the case for the time being.

On Wednesday, Pope took to Twitter, and wrote that he will be holding off on his decision and that he will visit other programs.

after talking with my family & coach, i feel it's best to hold off on my decision until i've had the chance to visit a few more schools

— THE POPE™ (@Pop3Bad_81) July 5, 2017

The likely scenario here is that Ohio State is not yet willing to accept the pledge from the four-star prospect, which sounds as wild as it seems. Pope is the 145th best player in the class; he’s also graded out as the sixth best inside linebacker in the country and the fourth best player from the state of Virginia — two spots below ‘18 LB Teradja Mitchell, who is already a Buckeye commit.

Pope will likely begin taking closer looks at schools like Clemson, Florida and Florida State. I wouldn’t say this means that Ohio State is out of the picture for Pope by any means, but they do run the risk of Pope potentially falling in love with any program.

So what’s next at linebacker?

Perhaps the good news here is that the Buckeyes probably wouldn’t slow play Pope without having optimism with their position in regards to another prospect or prospects. So, who could be the guy to join the current duo that features Mitchell and ‘18 LB Dallas Gant?

‘18 LB Solomon Tuliaupupu is one to watch going forward. According to Andrew Lind of Eleven Warriors, the Mater Dei (CA) standout is planning on visiting Ohio State officially in the fall. The Buckeyes currently seem to be in a battle with primarily USC for the pledge of the four-star prospect.

Another name to not forget is ‘18 LB Christopher Oats of Winton Woods (OH). Oats is the 18th highest graded outside linebacker in the class and is an in-state guy. The Buckeye staff didn’t hide the fact that they wanted to bring in even more Ohio kids in this class and adding a guy with the upside of Oats would be a tremendous addition. Sources tell me that Oats is expected to be in attendance at Ohio State’s Friday Night Lights camp later this month.

While the three names above are the most likely candidates to fill that final linebacker spot, ‘18 LB Michael Harris (Tucker, GA / Tucker) could be a fall back option, if things don’t go as planned. Harris has spoken for a long while now that Ohio State was his dream school and that he would commit as soon as the staff told him he could. However, I would only see this being the case the Buckeyes missed out on all of Oats, Pope and Tuliaupupu.

I do want to bring up ‘18 LB Palaie Gaoteote, who is currently a USC pledge and has been since February. First off, I do not expect Ohio State to just give up on the Bishop Gorman (NV) linebacker. With that being said, Gaoteote hasn’t given any indication that he is reconsidering his pledge with the Trojans. For the time being, I don’t see Gaoteote as a realistic option. That would obviously change if the staff could convince the five-star player and No. 1 ILB to make another visit to the campus. But until then, it’s hard to consider him a realistic option for the Buckeyes.

Goodwin Picks Irish

Last night, ‘18 four-star shooting guard Dane Goodwin announced that he would be playing college basketball at Notre Dame. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native had previously been committed to Ohio State, but following the firing of Thad Matta had reopened his recruitment. Goodwin did take an official visit to meet with new coach Chris Holtmann, but apparently it was not enough to convince him to reaffirm his commitment to his hometown team.

The pledge of Goodwin to the Fighting Irish is another blow to Holtmann’s program following the loss of incoming-freshman Braxton Beverly and the dismissal of Derek Funderburk following a short suspension. Neither of those players had been projected to contribute significantly this coming season for the Buckeyes, but Goodwin is a good enough prospect to have been a substantial building block for the new coach’s first class.

According to 247Sports, Goodwin is not only a top 100 player nationally, but also the fourth best player from Ohio in the 2018 class. With his decommitment, the Buckeyes currently have no pledges for the next recruiting class, but Holtmann has other issues as he tries to round out the roster for his 2017 squad.

However, when Holtmann does get to recruiting for 2018, he is likely to find the Ohio-cupboard a little bite bare, as with Goodwin gone, three of the top four in-state players have committed to out-of-state schools. Top-ranked Darius Bazley will attend Syracuse, No. 2 Pete Nance is headed to Northwestern, and now Goodwin will be in South Bend, Ind. On the brightside, the state’s third-best player, Dwayne Cohill, is a heavy OSU-lean, as is No. 5 player Jerome Hunter.

Is there anyone of value left to add to the squad?

“In a conversation with Matt McCoy, (WTVN-AM)’s sports director, (Chris) Holtmann said the Buckeyes are actively trying to add to a roster that features eight recruited scholarship players plus one walk-on.”

- Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

The expectations for the 2017-2018 men’s basketball were already tough to nail down given all of the tumult in the program as of late, but the idea of the Buckeyes going into the season with just six returning scholarship players, two true freshmen, and a walk-on is a little terrifying for fans.

In a sport where five people play at once, not having enough players to run a full-court scrimmage is probably not the best way for new coach Chris Holtmann to implement his system. Obviously managers and assistant coaches can fill in the gaps during practices, but the lack of depth on the roster will have further-reaching implications than just in games.

With an inexperienced team playing under a new staff, the goal is often for them to improve as much as possible in practice, perhaps while taking their lumps during games. However, given the current configuration of the roster, it is easy to envision the gains made being slightly more incremental than the team would like.

If Holtmann and company can pull off another substantive late addition, as they did when Kyle Young flipped from Butler to OSU (say if Eric Ayala reclassifies to 2017 and joins the squad), that would be a huge help. However, this close to the fall, with a less than fully-stocked cupboard, Buckeye fans might need to resign themselves to a very thin roster positioning itself for 2018-2019.

“Today’s linebackers must be able to run, chase and cover to match up against the spacing and personnel today’s game presents. Ohio State’s Jerome Baker has the skill set needed to win at linebacker in today’s NFL.”

- Joe Marino, NDT Scouting

Last season, little was expected from former four-star recruit Jerome Baker until starting linebacker Dante Booker went down with a knee injury against Bowling Green. From there, Baker became a vital part of the team’s stalwart defense, recording 86 tackles (including 9.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks, and two interceptions.

As Marino notes, while Baker is an incredibly physically gifted player, his best skill might be his ability to diagnose a play and anticipate where the flow of the offense will go. Add that in with exceptional technique, and Baker has the makings of a difference-maker for the Buckeyes, and perhaps beyond.

Despite the recent exodus of high-level players from Columbus to the NFL, the Buckeye defense is loaded with experienced players at nearly every position. There is a legitimate chance that OSU starts 10 upper-classman on defense come August 31st against Indiana.

With Raekwon McMillan now a member of the Miami Dolphins, the linebacking corps of Baker, Booker, and returning starter Chris Worley should be an integral part of Greg Shiano and Kerry Coombs’ veteran squad.

“Ohio State had a league-high and school record 115 student-athletes named Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, the conference announced Wednesday. This is the first time Ohio State has had 100+ honorees; the previous record of 91 was set last year.”

- OhioStateBuckeyes.com

While Academic All-Big Ten recognition only requires that athletes maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA, Big Ten Distinguished Scholars must achieve a 3.7 or higher GPA for the previous academic year, excluding summer school.

Today, 15 Buckeyes were recognized for maintaining a 4.0 GPA during the previous academic year, and OSU set a conference-record 394 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and a school record 626 student-athletes were recognized as Ohio State Scholar-Athletes.

Included in the Distinguished Scholar honorees were Kelsey Mitchell (women’s basketball), Billy Price (football), and three members of the National Champion men’s volleyball team; Christy Blough, Sanil Thomas, and Josh Tublin. Congratulations to all of the Buckeyes maintaining excellence in their sport and in the classroom.
