The Buckeyes look damn good, and our latest podcast is here to give them props.

Say what you want about Ohio State’s quality of opponent since their loss to Oklahoma, but the Buckeyes have trucked through the last month, winning their four games by an average score of 52-10. Both the offense and defense have been top-notch (we’ll get to the special teams later), and they’ve managed to avoid serious injuries for the most part as they head into the second half of the season.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holy Land, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn talk Ohio State’s improvement over the last month, and what they think of the Buckeyes taking over the No. 1 spot of the new S&P+ rankings. They also break down everything about Ohio State’s 62-14 win over Maryland, including:

  • What impressed them most about J.T. Barrett’s game versus the Terps.
  • Binjimen Victor’s growth, and whether he’s taken the leap to being the Buckeyes’ go-to receiver.
  • Replacing Branden Bowen on the offensive line after his season ending injury.
  • Giving props to the defense, talking up Chase Young, Jalyn Holmes, and Nick Bosa, plus a celebration of Jerome Baker’s breakthrough game.
  • Wondering what the hell happened on special teams, and why that’s the biggest concern for the team moving forward, and more!

The guys also take a look at what happened around college football this week, make fun of Michigan’s loss to Michigan State, and talk about why you shouldn’t worry about Oklahoma’s loss to Iowa State.

You can find the podcast on our iTunes page, and we encourage reviews, comments, criticisms, etc. to help us deliver the best possible audio product. The more we hear from you, the better we can make it. We’re also on Soundcloud, and you can subscribe via RSS on your Android and Windows Phone devices here.

LGHL Ohio State’s defense finally found the endzone

After weeks of forcing turnover after turnover, the defense finally took one to the house.

“We’ve had a few turnovers in other games, but it’s sweet to finally get in the end zone.”

-Ohio State linebacker Dante Booker, via Tim Bielik, Cleveland.com

By comparison, it took a long time for the Ohio State Buckeyes defense to get their first defensive touchdown of the season. Perhaps it’s because, in 2016, the secondary collectively had three Pick-6’s in the first two games of the season. Or perhaps it seems a long time coming, since defensive tackle Robert Landers appeared to have a fumble return for a touchdown in the team’s opener against Indiana, which was ultimately called back.

While the unit has done a good job of forcing turnovers this season, taking away 12 through six games, including two against Maryland, they hadn’t managed to find the end zone until the first quarter Saturday. Sophomore defensive end Nick Bosa got to Maryland’s Max Bortenschlager for the sack, forcing a fumble by the quarterback. Junior linebacker Jerome Baker did the rest, scooping the ball up and returning it 20 yards for the touchdown.

The defensive touchdown was indicative of the way the unit played as a whole against Maryland. Though formidable against previous opponents, including Rutgers, against whom they pitched a shutout, the defense utterly shut Maryland down in every category Saturday. The secondary emerged in earnest, holding the Terps to just 16 yards passing on three completed passes. Overall, the defense held Maryland to 66 total yards of offense to the Buckeyes’ 584--the fewest yards allowed against a Big Ten opponent since 1960. Five sacks on the day further eroded Maryland’s rushing numbers as the defensive front seven showed their aptitude up front. Moreover, J.T. Barrett, Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins individually had more rushing yards than the whole of Maryland’s offense. And when it counted, Maryland was not able to convert first downs, going just 1-for-15 on third downs. The Terps had just six first downs on the day to Ohio State’s 33.

“If I’m evaluating this play, I’m telling my on-field officials that this is not targeting, and certainly if it goes to replay, we want to overturn this and keep the player in the game.”

-Dean Blandino, FOX Sports

The 107,000-plus folks at the Horseshoe collectively (vehemently) disagreed with the targeting call made against junior quarterback Denzel Ward in the first quarter against Maryland Saturday. Ward made contact after Maryland receiver Taivon Jacobs turned to run after catching a pass from quarterback Max Bortenschlager. It was certainly a juggernaut of a hit, flipping Jacobs on his back and knocking the ball loose. Ward picked up the ball and began to return the ball for what would have been the Buckeyes’ second defensive touchdown of the game and season, but officials ruled the pass as incomplete, and called targeting on Ward.

The NCAA has an expansive definition and description of targeting, and yet the penalty manages to remain ambiguous. While defined as a player taking “aim at an opponent for the purpose of attacking with forcible contact that goes beyond making a legal tackle or a legal block or playing the ball,” notes also reference launching, thrusting and leading with the helmet, shoulder forearm, fist, hand or elbow. This definition, naturally, expands beyond helmet-to-helmet contact specifically when there is a dangerous hit to a player’s head.

All targeting fouls go to the booth for review. If enforced, the offending player is ejected and that player’s team charged a 15-yard penalty. If overturned, there are no such consequences. Ward’s call managed to be called on the field and upheld in review, which indicated that some part of the hit met some component of the NCAA’s definition of targeting. Even so, rules analyst Dean Blandino did not think that Ward’s tackle met the mark for the penalty, given that he led with his shoulder into the receiver’s upper chest.

Fans can appreciate the need to make the game safer for players, but in order for the targeting rule to effectively contribute to that effort, it needs to be enforced consistently.

“I don’t fumble that much so it kind of got to me a little bit. I knew I had to make up for it for my teammates.”

-Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins, via Ryan McGlade, Buckeye Sports

It is expected that freshmen will make mistakes, which is why it is a rare thing to see a true freshman earning serious playing time as a starter. For any other freshman, perhaps, it would not be shocking to commit a turnover. For true freshman running back J.K. Dobbins, however, that sort of mistake is utterly out of character.

After fumbling in the second quarter Saturday, Dobbins estimated that he had only ever lost the ball a handful of times his entire playing career, dating back to peewee football.

In many ways, it’s lucky that Dobbins saw the field at all again after his turnover versus Maryland. Urban Meyer is not one to forgive and forget such on-field atrocities so quickly, often sitting players for the remainder of the game after coughing the ball up. While sophomore running back Mike Weber took the next series, Dobbins was back in before the end of the half, and eventually ran in a three-yard touchdown in the third quarter. At the end of the day, Dobbins finished with a team-high 96 yards rushing.

Weber himself ended the day with 59 rushing yards and a touchdown of his own. Sophomore Antonio Williams also got in on the action, racking up 22 yards and yet another touchdown. With such wealth at running back (and that’s not including Demario McCall, who has been steadily recovering from a groin injury) and a massive lead, Meyer could have kept Dobbins on the bench for the rest of the day without any adverse effects for the rest of the team.

Instead, Dobbins showed that he would make up for his mistakes as quickly as he could. “I know Coach Meyer has a lot of trust in me so I kind of let him down with that fumble,” said the freshman. “But I made sure I would make up for it.”

We’re back again to get you caught up on the news, notes, and notable bits from Columbus and beyond.

It was the quite the weekend of college football.

Ohio State destroyed Maryland behind J.T. Barrett’s four touchdowns. Iowa State walked into Norman, Okla., and upset Oklahoma, 38-31. The shaky LSU Tigers bounced back with a big win over Florida (please don’t ever fire Ed Orgeron, LSU). Miami (FL) beat Florida State for the first time since 2009.

And Mark Dantonio’s Michigan State Spartans defeated then-No. 7 ranked in-state rival Michigan in The Big House, 14-10. (I called this one last week.)

It’s safe to say Sparty is back.

Let’s take a look around the country at how Saturday exactly went down.

Review: Maryland

Another Saturday, another blowout win in Columbus.

What’s new.

J.T. Barrett scored four total touchdowns and enjoyed an efficient outing through the air. He was aggressive and confident all afternoon, completing 20 of 31 passes for 261 yards.

The Buckeyes standout duo at running back – J.K. Dobbins and Mike Weber – combined for 155 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Their offense executed more than a few big plays, including Marcus Baugh’s leaping touchdown in the second quarter.

Marcus Baugh!!! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/5hOPwFjiq4

— Buckeye Videos+ (@BuckeyeVideos) October 7, 2017

OSU’s defense was dominant. The unit continues to improve on the backend, albeit after watching cornerbacks Denzel Ward – who didn’t deserve it – and Damon Arnette – who did deserve it – get ejected.

But the only unfortunate news to emerge is that starting guard Branden Bowen is out for the season with a fractured fibula.

Other than that, it was smooth sailing for the Buckeyes.

Play of the Game

I loved Marcus Baugh’s ultra-athletic leap. But it’s hard to beat a classic trick play.

Especially when you have Parris Campbell on your team.

They should let J.K. Dobbins shovel this to Parris Campbell next time for some passing yards. pic.twitter.com/SIUQVvRQNh

— Ozone Communications (@theOzonedotnet) October 7, 2017

You can’t teach speed, folks.

Looking Ahead: Nebraska

It’s been a rough season for Nebraska.

Sitting at 3-3, the Cornhuskers haven’t scored a decent victory yet and have been beaten by Oregon, Northern Illinois, and now Wisconsin. The Badgers were sloppy and looked average most of the night in Lincoln. Yet, they still proved to be on another level compared to Nebraska.

Their offense just isn’t consistent and leaves too many plays on the field. That tissue paper defense hasn’t done them any favors, either.

Even on the road in one of college football’s toughest environments, OSU should have no problem with Nebraska on Saturday.

State of the Big Ten

Coming off two straight losses, Iowa rebounded with a rout of Illinois. Purdue also came on strong, beating Minnesota, 31-17.

Penn State rolled Northwestern to improve to 6-0 and Indiana shutout Charleston Southern. It was Nebraska that flashed at times, but couldn’t keep pace at home against Wisconsin.

To cap off a full day of Big Ten football, Michigan State and Michigan renewed their rivalry in Ann Arbor.

The Spartans outplayed and outcoached the Wolverines, controlling the pace of the game throughout the night. Brian Lewerke’s playmaking ability ended up making the difference. (I also said this last week.)

That’s now eight wins for Michigan State over Michigan in the last decade, twice versus Jim Harbaugh in The Big House.

Little brother once again resides in Ann Arbor. Rejoice.

Plays of the Week

There was no shortage of big plays this past weekend.

We begin with a huge run from Air Force v. Navy.

It was a tone-setting play that led to a 48-45 win for Navy.

On the road in Ann Arbor, Brian Lewerke scored Michigan State’s first touchdown on a nifty 14-yard scramble.

Lewerke is a name to watch for going forward.

Elsewhere, rivals Miami (Fl.) and Florida State squared off. It took the closing seconds to decide things.

The man formerly known as Kenny Trill has returned.

Heisman Watch

It didn’t matter that Saquon Barkley only gained 75 rushing yards against Northwestern on Saturday.

The Heisman Trophy is his to lose.

Baker Mayfield is pretty much out of it after Oklahoma was stunned by Iowa State at home. Louisville’s 14-point drubbing by NC State means Lamar Jackson is out of it.

But Barkley’s Nittany Lions haven’t lost and it seems one loss wouldn’t even hurt Barkley’s stock as this point.

Considering he can do this at a moment’s notice, I’ve got to believe voters feel the same way.

Saquon Barkley is awake pic.twitter.com/QRLHo3Ck8J

— Sports Illustrated (@SInow) October 7, 2017

Barkley leads the Heisman pack for at least another week.

Game of the Week: Oklahoma v. Texas

No Week Seven matchup particularly stands out.

But how can you not look forward to the Red River Rivalry game between Oklahoma and Texas?

I can say with full confidence that this will be a shootout. Texas and Oklahoma offer little in the way of defense and have heavily relied on their explosive offenses.

The Sooners suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Iowa State, while the Longhorns victory over Kansas State may be a sign of things to come.

Either way, this should be a classic meeting between two longtime rivals.

Monday Morning #HotTakez

  • Big brother should be embarrassed after losing to Michigan State at home. That makes it eight losses in 10 years for Michigan, twice at home under Jim Harbaugh. Ouch.
  • Michigan is 3-16 against both Michigan State and Ohio State since 2008. Say it with me: Mark Dantonio is a better coach than Jim Harbaugh.
  • Which conference will be left out of the College Football Playoff? After Oklahoma’s flop at home to a backup quarterback, me thinks the Big 12 (again).
  • Stanford running back Bryce Love might be the best player in the Pac-12. He’s been trampling defenses and ran for a season-worst 152 yards during a 23-20 victory over Utah.
Oh, the Interweb

It surprises me every week just how ridiculous college football can be.

Take a look at what happens after Western Michigan's Donnie Ernsberger scores a touchdown.

Remember when Baker Mayfield did that in Ohio Stadium? Yeah, karma works both ways, Baker.

To end things, I have the hit that OSU’s Denzel Ward was ejected for. Listen to what Joel Klatt of Fox Sports has to say about it.

Does that really warrant a flag, let alone an ejection? I certainly don’t think so. It’s not even close in my eyes.

Let us know what you thought of Ward’s hit in the comments section.

Buckeye Bits

Land-Grant Holy Land has you covered on everything that is OSU. Win or lose, we’ve got your back.

Final Thoughts

Ohio State has set themselves up quite nicely as their showdown with Penn State looms.

They get a solid primer at Nebraska this week. A bye Week follows, then the Nittany Lions make the trip to the Buckeye State. Penn State faces a gauntlet of teams in Michigan (home), OSU (away), and Michigan State (away) in consecutive weeks.

The Scarlet and Gray have been visibly progressing and are building confidence. All the broken records and milestones are extra topping.

Given the lull in their schedule, there’s not much more you can ask for from this team. The Buckeyes look about as ready as they’ll ever be to reassert themselves as national championship contenders.

I like their chances of doing so in three weeks.

Have questions? Comments? Send them my way! Email me at [email protected] or follow me @Kyle_McKinnon6 on Twitter.

Chris Olave likes what he's seen from the Buckeye program.

Though they've already racked up 18 verbal pledges, Urban Meyer, Ryan Day, Larry Johnson, Greg Schiano, and the rest of the Ohio State coaching staff are still hitting the recruiting trail hard trying to finish the Buckeyes' class of 2018 off strong.

Before the Buckeyes mixed it up with Maryland on Saturday, Ohio State quarterback coach Ryan Day started his morning off by dishing out a scholarship offer to one of the top wide receiver recruits on the west coast.

“I've been talking to OSU for about a month now. I got a text after my game on Friday from Coach Day saying "call me in the AM. We have great news!!!" I was excited so I called in the morning and they offered me. Coach Day is the one that offered, they said they want to get me on an official during the season and they're excited about me,” Chris Olave told Land-Grant Holy Land. Olave is a three-star prospect from Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, California

Beyond thankful to receive an offer from Ohio State University !! Thank you !! @ryandaytime pic.twitter.com/vrc0KihGYz

— CO2 (@chrisolave_) October 7, 2017

Sitting out his junior campaign due to transfer rules, Olave has bounced back to put together quite an impressive senior season so far. After hauling in 41 receptions for 930 yards and 14 touchdowns, colleges are starting to take notice of him.

While programs such as Boise State, BYU, Utah, and Washington State might’ve offered the 6’0, 160-pound playmaker before the Buckeyes, Olave is definitely intrigued with what the Buckeyes have to offer.

“This offer is unreal. Growing up watching college football, Ohio State was always a powerhouse and still is. Knowing I have an offer from one of the top programs in the nation is unbelievable. This offer means a lot for my recruitment, they're definitely one of my top schools from here on out and I'll take a deep look into OSU,” he said.

Olathe is currently ranked as the 217th wide receiver and 1,462nd overall prospect in the 2018 class, per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Yet to make it up to Columbus for a visit, Olave will soon change that, as he plans to be on campus on November 11, when the Buckeyes take on the Michigan State Spartans.

Local LB visits OSU

Just like every other home game this season, the Ohio State coaching staff had a decent amount of high school prospects on campus to watch the Buckeyes in action on Saturday.

One of the recruits to take in the Buckeyes' runaway victory over the Terrapins of Maryland was Reynoldsburg class of 2019 outside linebacker Dezman Cooper.

Making the short round trip to the Ohio State campus in the past, Cooper had a great time in Ohio Stadium once again on Saturday.

“It was good. The few things that stood out [were] the atmosphere and the intensity of the game,” the 6’2, 215-pound junior told Land-Grant Holy Land.
