The QB has bounced back from calls for his job to being one of the best in the country.

“You may have been sleeping on Ohio State since the Buckeyes lost to Oklahoma, and if you have, you've missed some epic Barrett performances.”

-Brady Quinn, CBS Sports

After weeks of calling for Dwayne Haskins to take over under center, Buckeye fans are slowly getting accustomed to the fact that fifth-year senior signal-caller J.T. Barrett might have finally completed his complete revolution back to the confident, consistent passer that he was before breaking his ankle against Michigan in 2014.

As the Dublin-native Quinn mentions in his breakdown, in the five games since the 31-16 loss to Oklahoma, Barrett has thrown for 1,351 yards and 18 touchdowns, bringing his season total to 21 passing scores to just one interception.

Now, we understand that the last five games have not exactly been against the stiffest of competition, and that Barrett struggled mightily against the Sooners, however, it is clear that his progress has been more than just playing against porous defenses.

Against Nebraska, Barrett was insanely consistent. He went 27-of-33 for 325 yards and five passing touchdowns, and did so by sitting in the pocket and waiting for routes to develop, throwing into tight windows, and trusting his receivers to make plays downfield.

While the offensive line likely won’t be able to give him the same kind of time against the quality teams in the second half of the season, nor will WRs be able to make the same athletically dominant plays, there is no doubt that new offensive gurus Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day have not only fine-tuned the QB’s mechanics, but figured out how to rewire his in-play process as well.

If Barrett is able to maintain anything approaching the level of comfort in, and command of, the offense through the end of the regular season, there is no doubt that the Buckeyes will be in the College Football Playoff, and Barrett will be in New York for the Heisman Ceremony.

“Also, Ohio State’s been passing the ball really well (and 37 times a game so far), especially for a team that couldn’t throw a ball in a lake successfully last year.”

-Spencer Hall, SBNation

Today, SBNation’s own Spencer Hall dives into the biggest “nightmare” scenarios for the College Football Playoffs that are also still possible. Most of Hall’s Final Fours are framed around some humorous conceit, like “The ‘God Don’t Like Ugly; He Loves It’ Plan” which features Michigan State, Stanford, Alabama, and NC State.

The Buckeyes find themselves in three of the nine scenarios, and while none of them seem all that likely in total, in two of them, Hall’s premise is that Ohio State not only passes a lot, but does so increasingly well.

Silly situations aside, sitting at No. 6 in the most recent AP Poll bodes well for OSU’s playoff chances. While that number has no bearing on the College Football Playoff, it does tend to indicate the level of respect that the college football community has for the one-loss Buckeyes.

If Ohio State remains at or around that spot when the first official rankings come out on Halloween night (which would require defeating Penn State on Oct. 28), it will all but control its own destiny.

Our Gary Danielson thinks you should remember the power of @OhioStateFB. pic.twitter.com/uEi1W04nib

— CBS Sports (@CBSSports) October 18, 2017

While I am loathe to ever refer to former Purdue quarterback turned CBS “analyst” Gary Danielson as an expert on anything, I do think that his analysis of the Buckeyes being the team most likely to compete with Alabama is correct.

Ohio State and Alabama are the only two teams to be in the top-11 of both scoring offense and scoring defense, and as Wilson and Day have gotten more comfortable with the players, the reigns have seemingly been loosened for them to call plays that more fit their offensive philosophies than Urban Meyer’s.

When it comes to recruiting, arguably no school has had the success over the past five years that ‘Bama or OSU have, so to see the teams in a rematch of the 2014 semifinals would be the ideal way to cap off the season. Now, there is a long way to go before either team can confirm their postseason plans, but at this point, I think that this is the matchup that many people across the country are rooting for.

Buckeye Baseball 2017 Schedule (Fire Beals)

Baseball: Scarlet and Gray World Series gives Buckeyes first glimpse of touted recruiting class

DSC_0355-16isc62-530x355.jpg

Ohio State’s baseball team brought in one of its best recruiting classes in team history, landing the top prospect in Ohio — and the highest-ranked recruit signed by a Big Ten school — in freshman starting pitcher Seth Lonsway.

Overall, Baseball America listed this as one of the best recruiting classes in the conference, citing Lonsway as the clear headliner, but also highlighting touted freshmen like catcher Dillon Dingler and Jake Ruby as potential impact players for the Buckeyes next season.

Though the Scarlet and Gray World Series was just a scrimmage for the team, the performances of some of the younger players could lay the groundwork for upcoming position battles in the 2018 season.

Nearly all of Ohio State’s top recruits had a chance to play in Tuesday’s game, with the star of the class — Lonsway — opening the game on the mound.

Here are some thoughts on the performances of the younger players:

LHP Seth Lonsway

To find any faults with the starting pitcher for the Scarlet team would be to knitpick. Lonsway entered the game with the loftiest expectations of any newcomer in the class. He was regarded as the No. 148 prospect on MLB Pipeline’s 2017 Top 200 Draft Prospects and was drafted 557th overall by the Cincinnati Reds in the MLB draft.

The southpaw fanned six batters in the outing and allowed just one run on three hits and two walks over four innings of work.

It is clear why the Buckeyes are excited about his potential. Lonsway immediately flashed his dynamic stuff, spotting a low-90s fastball (it touched 94 a couple times) with plenty of life that he located effectively. If he ever fell behind in the count, he found he could come back to that pitch and help put himself back in the count. It is the most electric left-handed fastball to come out of an Ohio State arm in a long time, and it kept hitters off balance all day.

“It was working inside, working outside. At times, I left it up a few times out of the stretch, which I’ve been working on quite a bit,” Lonsway said.

The secondary offerings were about as steady as would be expected. His changeup was spotty at times, and it was clear the pitch is a work in-progress. When he had the pitch working, it kept both right- and left-handed hitters off balance, but often he lost his touch with it and bounced it in the dirt. The second-best pitch in his repertoire was his curveball. He located the pitch well — though he occasionally lost the grip on it — and it always seemed to keep hitters off balance.

Lonsway is far from perfect, but head coach Greg Beals knows he could be a star player for the Buckeyes. It took him a few moments to ponder what Lonsway needed to improve on before citing the inconsistency in the southpaw’s secondary pitches as the key to improving.

“He’s got a good changeup to go with his breaking ball, just a little bit better command of his offspeed stuff to go with the explosive fastball that he has,” Beals said. “That’s his next evolution is just the command part of his game and getting that intact because he’s got all the tools necessary to be a great pitcher at this level.”

C Dillon Dingler

Lonsway’s battery mate did not have quite the same impact on the game the starter had, but his tools jumped out. The swing was easy and fluid, and built to make plenty of contact. He combined that swing with a patient approach at the plate and a good eye. And though he was never a great power hitter in high school, his 6-foot-1, 195-pound frame gives him space to develop some pop in his bat.

What stood out the most about Dingler was his defense. He is athletic for someone of his size, and his above-average speed and athleticism helped him block pitches in the dirt and serve as an effective receiver for his pitchers. He possesses a missile for an arm, though the accuracy wavers at times. Base-runners will have a tough time running on him once he is able to harness the power in his arm.

Lonsway said he feels comfortable with Dingler catching behind the dish, and said the freshmen tandem could be a dynamic pairing for the Buckeyes.

“He’s got a great arm behind the plate, just very smooth and very fundamentally sound,” Lonsway said. “I have a lot of confidence when I’m on the mound and he’s behind the plate. I love throwing to him. He’s caught me quite a few times this fall, so it’s been a pretty good duo for us.”

A Saudi Prince traveling from the United Arab Emirates got passports for his falcons (yes, really) which have a three-year validity and allows the falcons to travel between certain Middle Eastern countries. Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways both allows falcons onboard, but usually with a limit of six. This Saudi played the royalty card and was able to bring a whopping 80.

The Buckeyes will be in all Gray when they face the Nittany Lions.

As the Penn State Nittany Lions prepare for back-to-back big games against Michigan and Ohio State, the Buckeyes is prepping for their week off by dropping the first look at their monochromatic jerseys for Oct. 28’s game against PSU.

While Penn State is fond of their “White Outs,” it appears that the Buckeyes will be hosting a “Gray Out” at the ‘Shoe with their gray-on-gray alternate jerseys, according to Eleven Warriors.

The jerseys will use Nike’s Vapor Untouchable template, and will be available for purchase next Monday, Oct. 23, and will cost $150. There is still no word on what the helmet, pants, or cleats will look like for the game, but according to 11 W’s Andrew Lind, they will also continue the nearly all-gray coloring of the jersey itself.

It’s bye week, but the Buckeye coaching staff is still doing work.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are heading into their bye week. After that, the clash with the Penn State Nittany Lions will become the focal point, as playoff and Big Ten championship aspirations will be on the line on Oct. 28.

However, before we get to that game, there is still work to be done. On top of the game prep, the recruiting trail still needs to be traveled—and that’s exactly what the coaches are doing this week.

California Dreamin’

Linebackers coach Bill Davis was one of the coaches who packed his bags and went out onto the recruiting trail. On Monday, Davis ended up in California to take in a practice with Solomon Tuliaupupu (Santa Ana/Mater Dei) being the focus, according to Bill Kurelic of 247sports.

Tuliaupupu is one of the top players in the state of California, and at his position. According to 247sports, the Mater Dei standout is the third-best player in his state, and the second-best inside linebacker for the 2018 class.

In the article by Kurelic, the Mater Dei coached talked with Davis—and things seemed to go well. Additionally, Kurelic talked to Solomon’s father, who said that an Ohio State visit will “definitely” be on the list. Whether that will be at a game or a campus visit remains to be seen; Michigan State (Nov. 11) and Illinois (Nov. 28) are the only remaining home games—outside of Penn State—that the Buckeyes have this season.

While Davis is making the trip out West, getting Tuliaupupu out of California to commit may be a bigger hurdle. Right now on the 247sports Crystal Ball Predictions, eight of the nine predictions point to Tuliaupupu committing to the USC Trojans. However, the last two predictions, one made on May 30 and the other on July 19, are for Ohio State and USC, respectively.

There is still time for OSU to make a move and get another top talent out of California. Especially with a visit nearly set in stone, the Buckeyes can make a big move against the Trojans at that time.

Speaking of making a move on the Trojans...

Not so fast

In the same article by Kurelic, he notes that five-star ILB Palaie Gaoteote (Las Vegas/Bishop Gorman) will take an official visit to Ohio State.

Gaoteote, like Tuliaupupu, is part of the 2018 class. However, the difference is that Gaoteote committed to USC back on Feb. 19. It’s not too uncommon for someone who is committed to take visits to other schools. But, it does open the door for a potential switcheroo—decommitment followed by a commitment—to occur.

According to his 247sports profile an official visit date hasn’t been scheduled. As mentioned before, there aren’t too many football games left on the slate, if that was when the visit was going to happen.

This is definitely something to keep an eye on, as there is still time for a shakeup to happen before National Signing Day 2018.

LGHL Ohio State’s J.T. Barrett is extremely under appreciated

usa_today_10347846.0.jpg

The senior quarterback has the stats to prove his worth, and yet the criticism still remains.

“Rarely has a quarterback had this many career benchmarks. And because of whom he plays for, we remember every loss he’s been a part of. The entire list: 2014 Virginia Tech, 2015 Michigan State, 2016 Penn State, 2016 Clemson, 2017 Oklahoma. That’s it. He’s won every other game he’s played in, and since this year’s limp defeat to OU, he has pulled a 2014.”

- Bill Connelly, SB Nation

If the quote doesn’t give enough evidence that J.T. Barrett is one of the most successful college quarterbacks ever in terms of wins and losses, I don’t know what else to say. Barrett has been under heavy criticism since 2015 when he and Cardale Jones had to fight for the starting spot. In 2016, a lackluster season offensively, it was Barrett again who took the blame. And once the Buckeyes dropped their home opener against Oklahoma, the call for a change at quarterback was quiet loud from the fan base. But in the end, Meyer continued to stick by Barrett who continues to return the favor by winning games and breaking records left and right.

Over the past five games, Barrett has thrown 99-of-137 for 1,351 yards, 18 touchdowns, and no interceptions. You could absolutely argue that Ohio State hasn’t really played anyone with a legitimate defense over those five games, but the efficiency is still there regardless. The big test will be next week when the Buckeyes host Penn State, but if Ohio State wins out the rest of the season, Barrett will have amassed a 29-2 record in conference play alone.

“I think the biggest thing is making sure that we’re aggressive, we’re playing fast, and just the philosophies and the ideas that our offensive coaching staff believes in. I think that’s probably the biggest difference.”

- Billy Price via Tony Gerdeman, The O-Zone

There’s a level of excitement in Columbus about Ohio State’s recent fixes in the offense the past couple of weeks. But this isn’t the first time that a stagnant offense has looked good against teams like Maryland and Nebraska, the two latest victims of the improved offense. Last season, the Terrapins and Cornhuskers were beat by a combined score of 62-3. So the question still remains if the offense will good against top tier talent, which the Buckeyes will have a chance to answer when they face Penn State next week.

Billy Price seems to think this isn’t just a repeat of success from last season, where Ohio State still struggled offensively against good defenses. In fact, Price mentions that the coaching is different this season, which makes sense considering that Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day have replaced Tim Beck.

“[Midseason AP All-Americans] First Team: Billy Price, Center, Ohio State”

- Associated Press

Two members of Ohio State were featured in the midseason Associated Press All-American teams. Billy Price, the center for the Buckeyes, was listed as the starting center on the first-team while Denzel Ward, one of Ohio State’s cornerbacks, was listed on the second-team as a starter. Midway through the season, that’s a good sign for these two players as Price should continue his success. Ward, meanwhile, has stepped up in a big way for the Buckeyes helping to plug in a hole in the secondary which lost three of its members to the NFL last season.

Some of the other notable names are Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, Stanford’s Bryce Love, and Alabama’s Minkah Fitzpatrick, all making the first-team for the midseason AP All-Americans.

The quarterback was excellent against the ‘Huskers.

2014 J.T. Barrett is back.

It’s not about the [lack of] competition anymore when talking about Barrett’s recent success. It’s his poise, decision making and confidence that will allow him to do what he did against Nebraska, against anyone. He has full confidence in his offensive line, his pass catchers and his arm, which will cause defensive coordinators to lose sleep at night.

We haven’t seen this J.T. Barrett since the 2014 season, but get used to it, because this type of play is here to stay.

  • Quickly looking at the chart outside of Barrett, the one major thing that stands out is the offensive line. They haven’t been talked about much this season — which is typically good for an offensive line -- but they’ve been playing extremely well. Against Nebraska, Barrett was only pressured three times, hit twice and sacked once. That’s an incredible number for 38 dropbacks. In fact, the first pressure they allowed came at the 2:24 mark of the third quarter. They’re keeping him upright and opening throwing windows for Barrett.
DMTlvkmX0AAf8Lq.jpg

  • Barrett’s lone poor throw of the day occurred when he almost got Parris Campbell killed on a screen. The defensive back quickly diagnosed the screen (Ohio State didn’t have the numbers) and popped Campbell right away, ending his night prematurely. Barrett has to make sure he has the numbers advantage before throwing the screen pass to the perimeter.
  • For the first time in a long time, it looked like Barrett was told to hand the ball off on the zone read, rather than making the correct read throughout the night. On a number of instances, Barrett just handed the ball off to J.K. Dobbins or Mike Weber, rather than making the read. The staff most likely wanted to save the quarterback from contact with Penn State on the horizon — they also only called four designed runs.
  • If you were watching the broadcast, you most likely heard the color announcer talking about Kevin Wilson’s “Mesh Concept.” Here’s a great view from behind the quarterback that shows this concept and how confused it makes the middle of the opposing defense. As we’ve seen through the first half of the season, Johnnie Dixon continues to be open in the middle of the field when the linebackers continue follow the crossers out of the middle of the field.

Rushing 3 and dropping 8 is not the way to beat the Buckeyes. Barrett works through his reads with plenty of time in the pocket. pic.twitter.com/s8hErV7Y7a

— Kyle Morgan (@NoHuddleScouts) October 16, 2017
  • It’s more than just the quarterback who’s improved; it’s also the receivers. They’re gaining separation on the perimeter, making tough catches in traffic and winning their one-on-one battles. Here’s a terrific route by Austin Mack — who has improved every single week — to move the chains. For as much garbage as we’ve given Zach Smith in the past, he’s done a tremendous job since the Oklahoma game. The whole core of receivers are dependable and consistent — something we’ve been unable to say since 2014.
  • What’s been so impressive about Barrett has been his poise in the pocket and his knack to keep his eyes downfield. Here, he looked like vintage Johnny Manziel in the pocket by buying time in the pocket and finding Dobbins for the first down.

J.T. Manziel keeping his eyes downfield while making a Houdini act in the pocket. pic.twitter.com/tRDmV803um

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) October 17, 2017
  • A few weeks ago, Barrett would have quickly checked down to Dobbins here. Now, Barrett trusts his eyes, his arm and his receiver to rifle a pass into an area where four defenders are present. His confidence is soaring right now.

A few weeks ago, Barrett dumps this off to the RB. Now he's comfortable going through his progressions and trusting his arm. pic.twitter.com/8hcO9AWCGf

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) October 17, 2017
  • Barrett’s perfectly thrown pass to Terry McLaurin is the deep ball connection we’ve all been waiting for. He could have thrown it a second earlier, but it still had great placement where only McLaurin could make a play on the ball.

Beautiful throw by Barrett on Terry McLaurin's corner route. pic.twitter.com/D8Ws3FV7uV

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) October 17, 2017
  • The best part of all of this is the confidence that Barrett has in every single pass catcher on the field right now. Eight players have double digit receptions and 10 different receivers have reached the end zone. Barrett is throwing to the open guy whether it’s Campbell, Dobbins, Rashod Berry, Binjimen Victor or Weber. This is the first time since 2014 where Barrett feels comfortable with every player on the field and it’s showing on the scoreboard.

One turnover? One tackle for a loss? No sacks? No problem!

Another week, another conference win. Nobody expected the Nebraska Cornhuskers to be a pushover when they were accepted to the Big Ten in 2010, but it turns out that J.T. Barrett guy is pretty special and it’s hard to rebound from 35-0 halftime deficits. Some notes from Ohio State’s fifth-consecutive win:

  • We knew the secondary’s ability to limit big plays would be a huge factor going into this game — and it was. Ohio State allowed just one pass over 20 yards before climbing to an insurmountable 42-0 lead. Cornhuskers quarterback Tanner Lee rebounded in the third quarter and ended up with 303 yards and two touchdowns, but it was the Silver Bulletts’ ability to limit chunk plays in the first half that helped put this one away early.
  • Once again, the Buckeyes forced their opponent to become one dimensional. Nebraska totaled just 44 rushing yards on 16 attempts, an average of just 2.8 yards per attempt. The Cornhuskers didn’t break a run longer than 11 yards, and their low average is even more absurd after considering the Buckeyes didn’t register any sacks.
  • A typical Buckeye beat down, has usually consisted of numerous defensive splash plays, but Ohio State only registered one tackle for a loss, no sacks, and just one interception (on the last play of the game). A defense as talented as Ohio State’s is always capable of creating a game-changing play, but their ability to play sound football and hold an opponent to just 14 points without the benefit of numerous turnovers points to the improvement in tackling and steady play from the secondary.

Even without the benefit of negative plays and turnovers, there were plenty of stars on the defensive side of the ball for the Buckeyes. Here are a few notable standouts.

Damon Arnette continues to blanket the opposition

Arnette was suspended for the first half of the game due to a targeting penalty during the second half of the Maryland game, but continued to make his presence felt once on the field. Overall, he led the team with two pass deflections and showed why he’s joined Denzel Ward and Kendall Sheffield as the defense’s top-three corners:

Arnette demonstrates both his ability to play outside corner and get his head around when the ball is under thrown on the first play in the above video; while he blankets the slot receiver on following snaps to help force a fourth down after. Slot corners aren’t afforded a sideline for assistance and it’s been an exploitable position on recent Buckeye defenses. Still, Arnette has displayed sticky-coverage technique and is helping make the middle of the field just as dangerous as the the outside.

Nick Bosa: Still very good

Bosa has established himself as the most-feared edge rusher on a defense with plenty to spare. He didn’t add to his team-high 4.0 sacks Saturday night, but this didn’t stop him from reminding the Cornhuskers linemen they didn’t have a chance at stopping him:

Bosa is humiliating tackles on a weekly basis, but there’s simply too much talent across the defensive line to routinely double him. Remember: he is just a true sophomore. We likely haven’t even seen the best version of Bosa yet, but the current state is already pretty damn frightening.

Jerome Baker continues to make plays

MOUTH PIECES WERE FLYING IN LINCOLN, NEBRASKA LAST SATURDAY NIGHT:

Baker demonstrates his insane versatility during two huge plays in the second quarter. First, he set the edge on a 3rd-and-1 run directly at him before sifting his way through traffic and ultimately standing the running back up for no gain at the line of scrimmage. Having fast linebackers that can cover are great, but they’re useless without the ability to hold up against the run. Later, Baker shoots past the over-matched receiver assigned to block him and makes the second-best hit of the season. Chris Worley and Dante Booker had nice days at the office as well, and this Buckeyes front seven is all that much scarier when both levels of the interior are clicking.

After losing to Virginia Tech in 2014, nobody took Ohio State seriously until they took down then-eighth-ranked Michigan State in East Lansing. With a bye week to prepare, the Buckeyes will have a chance to again stake their claim as the Big Ten’s premier contender on October 28th against the Penn State Nittany Lions.

The final: 56-14, Ohio State

Defensive player of the game: Jerome Baker (3 tackles, 1 TFLs, 1 QB hurry)

Defensive play of the game: Jerome Baker briefly ending a Nebraska running back’s life.

Next Victim: Penn State. Keep it classy, Columbus.

The Hangout in the Holyland recaps the win over Nebraska and looks back at the Buckeyes’ dominant month.

Ohio State has been on a tear since losing to Oklahoma.

Since that loss, the Buckeyes are 5-0, have outscored their opponents by an average of 53-11, and own the nation’s most efficient offense in the country. Oh, the defense also hasn’t given up a single point in a non-garbage time situation since the 2nd quarter of the Army game, too. Their opponents haven’t been great by any measure, but the Buckeyes are playing as well as any team in the country right now, and that was on full display in their 56-14 over Nebraska on Saturday.

On this episode of The Hangout in the Holy Land, Colton Denning and Patrick Mayhorn break down Ohio State’s latest blowout, and look back at everything that’s stood out to them about the team over the last month, including:

  • The players finally looking comfortable in Kevin Wilson’s offense, and J.T. Barrett putting up more big numbers.
  • Whether this is the most diverse offense we’ve seen under Urban Meyer.
  • Giving props to the defensive line (again) for not allowing Nebraska to have any success running the ball.
  • The improving linebacker play, what they thought about the secondary’s performance, and Jordan Fuller’s impressive game.

The guys also talk about who they’re rooting for in the Michigan/Penn State game this weekend, look ahead to the bye, and more!

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Jim Tressel would be proud of the 2017 Ohio State Buckeyes. He's the former OSU coach who - while attempting to drive home a point - famously like to quote an old coaching line, that the punt is the most important play in football.
