It was a quiet week for Buckeyes in the NFL, but a couple guys had standout performances.

Bye weeks started in the NFL this week, leaving many former Buckeyes with plenty of time to enjoy the 62-14 Ohio State win against Maryland on Saturday. It’s Week 5, and while some Buckeyes were sidelined with injuries — or listed as a healthy inactive — there were others who found the spotlight.

Some of the most exciting defensive players in the NFL hail from Ohio State, including Joey Bosa for the Chargers and Ryan Shazier for the Steelers. While it’s difficult to maintain their level of production, they find ways to make it happen so long as they’re healthy. Rod Smith made a big offensive play for the Cowboys — yes, this is a thing — but a lot of other Scarlet and Grey alumni had ‘meh’ days on Sunday.

Bosa ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It was not a good day for the New York Giants. It was made far worse for Eli Manning by Buckeye Joey Bosa, who finished the day with 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble. Bosa’s become part of one of the best pass rushing duos in the league, alongside Melvin Ingram. Just five weeks into the second year of his NFL career, Bosa has already put up 29 total tackles and 4.5 sacks.

Joey Bosa plays with great effort & instincts. Rushes past the depth of the QB, spins & gets the sack! #Chargers pic.twitter.com/XhFnfJXnCX

— DLineVids (@DLineVids) October 8, 2017

And even when he’s not taking down opposing quarterbacks, he still somehow figures out a way to ruin their day.

Bills flip the script on Brown

Former Buckeye receiver Corey “Philly” Brown spent the early part of his career with the Panthers before being signed by the Buffalo Bills this year in free agency. Brown failed to make the final 53 man roster, but with injuries plaguing the Bills’ wideouts — including Jordan Matthews needing surgery — they brought him back earlier in the week.

It didn’t last long, though. Just four days later, the team released Brown just a day before the team’s trip to Cincinnati for Sunday’s Week 5 contest.

Pretty slow news day

Some of the former Ohio State stars who have been on the rise the past few weeks, had relatively tame games in Week 5.

The Colts got a win over the San Francisco 49ers, with Johnathan Hankins (2 tackles), Malik Hooker (5 tackles), John Simon (4 tackles), and Jack Mewhort all starting for Indianapolis. For the Niners, RB Carlos Hyde was limited all week with a hip injury, and managed only 11 yards on eight carries and one reception for seven yards.

Similarly meh this week were Eli Apple (5 tackles), Cameron Heyward (2 tackles), Darron Lee (6 tackles), and Adolphus Washington (2 tackles). Malcolm Jenkins snagged four tackles and a pass break for the Eagles.

Plays of the Week

Ryan Shazier’s 2nd INT

The former Buckeye linebacker has been a beast since his days in Scarlet and Grey, but after a few seasons cut short to injury, he seems full-go in 2017. Ryan Shazier snagged his second interception in as many games in Week 5, along with eight total tackles — and the admiration of Steelers legend Jerome Bettis.

Rod Smith’s 2017 Introduction

Believe it or not, there is another Buckeye who plays for the Dallas Cowboys whose name is not Ezekiel Elliott or Noah Brown. Rod Smith has quietly contributed to Dallas’ offense over the past few seasons, but he became the sixth receiver Sunday to catch a pass from QB Dak Prescott. Smith’s first reception of the year was good for 18 yards and a first down.

Injury Report and Inactives

  • Safety Kurt Coleman suffered a sprained MCL during last week’s Carolina win over the Patriots and will be out of commission for several weeks.
  • Gareon Conley has been sidelined on and off throughout the early part of his rookie season for the Oakland Raiders with a lingering shin injury — one that once again left him out in Week 5.
  • Having yet to crack into the lineup at the No. 2 QB spot, Cardale Jones was a healthy scratch for the Chargers on Sunday. Other healthy inactive Buckeyes include Alex Boone for the Cardinals, rookie wideout Noah Brown for the Cowboys, and receiver Braxton Miller for the Texans (for the 2nd week in a row).
  • The Jets’ welcomed back Jalin Marshall this week from suspension, but he didn’t see any playing time.

Maryland had 16 passing yards while J.T. Barrett threw for 261

This has been a good four-game run for Ohio State to ramp up for its tough late-season games. Post-Oklahoma, Ohio State’s average score has been 53-14, which is close to the Buckeyes’ 62-14 win over Maryland.

Obviously the level of competition has been low, but as Oklahoma showed yesterday, that doesn’t mean that you can’t still lose. With Nebraska and Penn State next, and Michigan State now looking like a tougher game than it did before the Spartans’ win over Michigan, the toughest games are still to come for Ohio State’s renewed championship run.

In the table above, scoring opportunity efficiency looks at the average points scored per scoring opportunity -- drives with a first down past the opponents' 40-yard line. Drive efficiency looks at the percentage of drives that were scoring opportunities. Rushing opportunity rate is the % of runs that gained five or more yards. Rushing stuff rate is the % of runs that were for no gain or a loss. Explosive plays are 12+ yard runs and 20+ yard passes here.

This table only includes non-garbage time numbers — here, garbage time kicked in after Ohio State’s fifth touchdown to go up 34-7 with a few minutes left in the first half. J.T. didn’t get pulled until Ohio State went up 48-8, however.

Here are the three stats I said would matter most in our advanced stats preview:

  1. Number of explosive runs allowed on defense
  2. Defensive passing success rate
  3. Offensive passing success rate
Offense: More explosive passing

Key stats:

  • 45% rushing opportunity rate
  • 53% passing success rate
  • 21% passing explosiveness rate

J.T. Barrett was 20-of-31 for 261 yards (8.4 YPA) with three touchdowns and no interceptions overall, but in non-garbage time — which wipes out three J.T.-led drives — he also had a 53% passing success rate and a 21% passing explosiveness rate. Of his efficient passes, 40% were explosive (i.e., went for 15+ yards).

That continues last week’s trend. Against Rutgers, J.T. had a 25% passing explosiveness rate (three total explosive passes in non-garbage time, compared to four this week) and 50% of his efficient passes were also explosive.

J.T. spread the ball around so that there wasn’t a single dominant receiver. Binjimen Victor narrowly led the team in receiving yards with 55 on four catches and Parris Campbell led with six catches, but six players had more than 35 receiving yards on the day — and all six of them had at least one explosive play.

But besides the raw statistics, what was maybe most impressive was how J.T. was really ripping his passes. There was seemingly zero hesitation after he would make his read. He threw a few passes before receivers were open, put a few passes so receivers would have to go up and get the ball, and put a few passes in tighter windows. His touchdown pass to Victor is a good example of trusting his receiver to make a play — it was third-and-six from the eight-yard line, and Barrett used Victor’s height to get the touchdown. With Victor and Baugh’s touchdowns, we finally saw a tight end and tall receiver used in the red zone — which is nothing to dismiss, regardless of the opponent.

J.T. is now second in the Big Ten in passing yards per game with 252 — just 14 yards per game fewer than Trace McSorley. But J.T. averages .5 yards per pass more than McSorely (8.7) and has three fewer interceptions. Barrett is actually 38th in the country in passing yards per game too, and tenth overall in QB Rating.

That was a lot about the passing game. The run game was a little less exciting, as Dobbins got close, but failed to crack 100 yards before getting pulled, and Ohio State only had a 45% rushing opportunity rate overall. Ohio State had two explosive runs out of twenty attempts in non-garbage time. The Buckeye offensive line did not totally dominate the Maryland defensive front — which is fine, considering the passing game was as explosive as it was, but you have to wonder what would happen if the run game has another just-OK day while the passing game is slowed too. Branden Bowen’s injury undoubtedly increases that risk.

In fact, it seemed like Ohio State’s second drive of the third quarter was just to prove that the run game could dominate if it wanted to. On that drive the Buckeyes called nine runs and two passes, and all nine were efficient runs.

Defense: Dominating performance

Key stats:

  • 17% passing success rate
  • 0 rushing explosive plays
  • 24% havoc rate allowed

Maryland had a 19% overall success rate and no explosive plays in non-garbage time. Outside of Johnson’s one 35-yard run and Maryland’s one fourth-quarter touchdown on a drive that started at the Ohio State 27-yard line, the Buckeye defense was completely dominant — even the second- and third-string players.

Ty Johnson is a great player, as he showed on the 35-yard run and 100-yard kickoff return touchdown, but overall he had just 12 carries for 57 yards. Removing his explosive run and he was held to 11 carries for 22 yards the rest of the game.

There’s not too much you can say about the Maryland passing game — they completed three total passes on 13 attempts for 16 yards. Star receiver D.J. Moore was a total non-factor.

In the last three games, Ohio State has allowed 196 total passing yards, with quarterbacks averaging just 3.3 yards per pass. They’ve also grabbed four interceptions. That doesn’t mean a ton considering they faced a UNLV freshman, Rutgers, and Maryland’s third-stringer in that time period, but you can at least say that the secondary is playing as well as could be hoped for. I don’t want to read too much in to how the Buckeyes’ performance from the last three weeks projects against a top opposing quarterback.

The Buckeyes made another jump thanks to a win on Saturday and an Oklahoma loss.

Ohio State had a big 62-14 win over conference opponent Maryland on Saturday, and the latest polls have the Buckeyes on the rise. Thanks to the Week 6 win, Urban Meyer -- and his questionable special teams group — now sit in the No. 9 spot.

The former No. 3 ranked Oklahoma losing at home — sweet, sweet irony — to an unranked Iowa State team, was just the beginning to a wild weekend for college football. The Sooners made a big fall to No. 12 following the loss.

In the Big Ten, Penn State kept their top spot, moving up to No. 3 with a win over Northwestern. And Michigan took a big drop after losing at home to unranked Michigan State, landing at No. 17 — add letting the Spartans squeak into the rankings at No. 21. The other big news out of the conference was the Wisconsin win against Nebraska, leaving the Badgers up a few spots to No. 7.

We included Bill Connelly’s S&P+ Ratings because the Buckeyes usurped the Crimson Tide for the No. 1 spot. Ohio State might not make the top spot in either of the other weekly polls, but at least they take the lead in one.

There were several other big shake-ups in this weeks Coaches and AP Polls, below.

A dominating win by the Buckeyes doesn't show too many flaws.

There are some games in which the word ‘upset alert’ is thrown around that make you really scratch your head looking back on what people saw to make them think that. This Maryland game, with many describing as a trap game and a game to look out for, really showed to be anything but. Yes, Maryland looked impressive against Texas and handled business against Minnesota, but they were not at all ready for the Buckeyes.

In a day in which the Oklahoma Sooners and Baker Mayfield went down at home, the Buckeyes must be feeling great about their recent form and their hopes at a playoff spot come January. With yet another blowout in the books, it’s starting to feel like the reserves have been getting just as much playing time as the starters—which is a really good sign for the future.

Maryland has always felt like a slightly upgraded Rutgers in the Big Ten pecking order and today they showed that well they’re a slightly upgraded Rutgers. It wasn’t as easy a win as it was against the Scarlet Knights but it certainly was easy. The Big Ten East sure looks like it will be coming down to Ohio State and Penn State for the second year and all eyes will be on Columbus for the Oct. 28 showdown.

Blue chip stocks

Binjimen Victor, WR: Another game and another dazzling touchdown catch by Binjimen Victor. Victor seems to always have exceedingly good foot placement and is a master at the toe drag before going out of bounds. At 6-foot-4, he doesn’t have a problem getting over cornerbacks and as we continuously see this by and large pays off for him. Despite his relatively low yardage and catch total (55 yards on 4 catches), no one is surprised when he comes up with it in the end zone in often spectacular fashion.

Parris Campbell, H-Back: Coming into this year I really wasn’t sure how the transition of Campbell from WR to the hybrid role we saw Curtis Samuel at last year and the answer has been not too hard. After burning UNLV on a spectacular touchdown, Campbell continues to show what he has. A 24-yard run late in the second quarter saw him blow by defenders and spring electrifyingly fast up the right side of the field and into the end zone. He also was one of the few bright spots of the special teams; once again, he seemed on the verge of taking a kickoff to the end zone and it is only a matter of time before he finally breaks through on one.

J.T. Barrett, QB: Barrett continues to impress this season after suffering long standing questions on his accuracy and role as a starting quarterback. Despite those doubts, Barrett has had a solid season and further solidified that against Maryland. Going 20/31 with 3 TDs, including some sharp looking first half bullets, Barrett has seemingly done better as this season has gone on. Perhaps it’s been the pressure from Haskins chomping at the bit, or perhaps last year wasn’t indicative of how good he is at quarterback for Ohio State.

Solid investments

J.K. Dobbins, RB: Another game and another show by the true freshman running back. Seemingly always shifting between the tackles and creating lanes for himself, he had another stellar day finishing with 96 yards on 13 carries—and with a well-deserved touchdown. The only reason Dobbins isn’t higher is because of a nasty fumble when after several Maryland players hit him the ball popped up and out. Head Coach Urban Meyer is not a fan, nor is anyone, of fumbles but after being taken out for a series in lieu of Mike Weber he was right back at the spot he has earned for himself.

Baron Browning, ILB: The Ohio State linebacker core seems to find new ones seemingly every week, with Tuf Borland already proven to be a solid linebacker this year, it was Browning’s turn to turn some heads. The true freshman had a stand-out day with 6 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss. With great quickness and a big frame adept at run-stopping, Browning will undoubtedly hear his name called more in the rotation. In fact, with him and Borland both to be around at OSU for years to come this could turn into one of the best LB rotations in the country.

Junk Bonds

Special Teams. It was not a solid game for one of Meyer’s favorite unit, special teams. The most glaring deficiency came with the kick return for a touchdown from Maryland’s Ty Johnson. Outside of that there was a missed field goal, a botched extra point attempt, a blocked field goal, and yet another kickoff out of bounds. With so much going wrong for them this game hopefully they get a chance back at the drawing board to figure out what when wrong and how they can fix it before they really need to be relied on. Luckily against Maryland it wasn’t especially important, but against teams like Penn State and Michigan, special team mistakes, as we saw last year, can be the difference.

Buy/Sell

BUY: The receivers. After a lot of questioning and a lot of dropped balls it seems like ‘Zone 6’ is finally up to the task. There seemed to be many less dropped balls and much more solid route reading and position this week than previously. Granted, it’s the Maryland defense, but playing well against a solid B1G Ten team should inspire confidence in the unit. If they can continue their high form and they’re at times incredible catches look out for them to continue to be more of a factor.

BUY: The Defense. Once again, the vaunted silver bullets have stepped up to the task and shown that they are not to be messed with. After a very rocky start to the season, not allowing Maryland to get over 50 yards until the fourth quarter is an incredible stat. Holding them to 66 yards for the game in total in an absolutely dominating performance is what everyone thought this unit was capable of heading into the season. The fact that Maryland completed just three passes the entire game is indicative of how well they have been playing.

The Buckeyes trimmed the three goal lead to one, but couldn’t tie it up

If I told you going into this weekend that the Ohio State hockey team would split at No. 12 Wisconsin, you probably would’ve taken it and ran. But boy does it not feel good when you fall down three goals and the game feels out of reach halfway through the second.

The No. 19 Buckeyes made it close, scoring two in the third to make it a one goal game, but Wisconsin slammed the door against OSU and the extra attacker, to earn the split in the weekend series in Madison, Wisc., to open the year.

Ohio State was run over possession wise in the first, generating a paltry three shots on goal, while UW registered nine and scored the only goal of the frame. Will Johnson scored with Seamus Malone and Kevin Miller off for penalties, making it four on four. UW somehow got a 3-on-1 in the situation and Johnson put home the rebound. Not ideal!

The Badgers were contained from there until the nine minute mark of the second, when they’d score their second and third goals of the game within 1:43. Turnovers and poor clearing attempts allowed UW the chances they’d need as Cameron Baker and Tarek Baker scored their second and third goals, respectively.

OSU did outshoot the Badgers in the second, 8-7, but couldn’t find a way to put any of their opportunities home. Sean Romeo couldn’t keep the Buckeyes within a manageable distance despite only facing 16 shots against through two—and that’d sure matter once Ohio State came roaring back in the third.

Two goals within 24 seconds is a pretty unique occurrence, and Freddy Gerard and John Wiitala did that at 11:15 and 11:39 of the third. Mason Jobst had the secondary assist on both while Matt Joyaux had the primary on Gerard’s first of the year and Gerard had the primary on Wiitala’s second. Gerard now has four points through two games this year. Playing with Mason Jobst must own.

But that’d be all that OSU would get. Romeo would be pulled for the extra attacked but the Bucks couldn’t get that last one in.

Only seven shots were registered by the Buckeyes in the third, and they were actually outshot despite being down three coming into the period. (That’s not acceptable, but at least they made it close so consider this just me complaining.) If they keep getting outshot in those situations, it may be a problem, but it’s hard to complain here when they got so close.

All in all, a split at the No. 12 team in the country, who happens to be a conference rival, is nothing to scoff at. You just wish Ohio State would’ve come out and put on a better show in the first period Saturday night.

But either way, it’s a positive outcome and the Buckeyes will look to keep the momentum going when they host RPI in Columbus, Ohio for the home opening series next weekend.
