The Ohio State coaching staff visited Anthony Cook Monday in hopes of securing a commitment.

The Ohio State football program is entering its bye week, giving both players and coaches an extra week to watch game tape and practice in preparation for their matchup versus Penn State. And while players will likely have some extra free time this week, the Ohio State coaching staff isn’t taking a break, as both Urban Meyer and Greg Schiano traveled to Houston, Texas Monday to watch and talk with Anthony Cook.

Cook has been a priority for Ohio State since the program offered him in July of 2016, and the wait is finally over. The five-star cornerback is scheduled to announce his collegiate decision on October 30 and wrapped up his final official visit last weekend at LSU.

Cook is down to a final three of Texas, LSU, and Ohio State, with the Buckeyes long being seen as the favorite to land his services. However, after visiting Austin twice this fall, the Longhorns have appeared to have narrowed that gap and it looks to be more of a two-horse race with LSU on the outside looking in.

Because of the recent development, the Ohio State coaching staff felt it necessary to visit Cook during the bye week to ensure they have done all they can do to earn a commitment from him. According to Andrew Lind of Eleven Warriors, Ohio State sent the house, as both Meyer and Schiano visited Cook Monday.

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano are in Houston today to see five-star cornerback Anthony Cook.

— Andrew Lind (@AndrewMLind) October 16, 2017

Cook is seen as one of the top players in the entire 2018 recruiting class. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have the 6'0, 168-pound CB listed as the No. 2 CB in the class and the No. 14 overall recruit, regardless of position.

The Ohio State coaching staff has been all-in on Cook while finalizing their recruiting class this year. The program likely could have landed four-star CB Houston Griffith, who committed to Florida State last week, but communication between the two dwindled as Ohio State shifted its focus directly on Cook.

This will likely be the last time the coaching staff and Cook will have time to talk before his commitment date later this month. While he is still expected to commit to the Buckeyes, nothing is certain because Cook himself has still yet to come to a decision. Ohio State has done all it can to land Cook and now all the coaches can do is play the waiting game.

2019 4-star OT lists Ohio State in top 4

With Ohio State’s 2018 recruiting class filling up quickly, the Buckeyes’ coaching staff has begun shifting its focus towards next year’s class. Urban Meyer and the rest of his staff are among the best at scouting young talent, which gives the program an incredible head start at building relationships with elite level recruits early on in the recruiting cycle.

The Ohio State coaches have started to see their work pay off as the program learned they made the cut for one of 2019’s best offensive tackles. Four-star OT Harry Miller (Buford, GA/Buford) spoke with Chad Simmons of Rivals.com and confirmed the Buckeyes are one of his top four schools right now.

Along with Ohio State, Miller listed Clemson, Georgia, and Michigan as his top four schools. He has unofficially visited all four schools, meaning it will be important to get him back on campus a few more times in order to secure a commitment.

Miller has shown enough in just two and a half seasons of high school football to be seen as the No. 14 OT in the class and the No. 110 overall recruit, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Alongside this, Rivals.com has him slated as their No. 13 OT and No. 84 overall recruit, and if Miller continues to play at a high level through his senior season, he will only continue to receive more accolades.

Ohio State views the offensive line as the highest of priorities and Miller would make an excellent addition to four-star OT Doug Nester, the Buckeyes' lone commitment in the 2019 class.

Quick Hit:

Ohio State four-star DE target and Cleveland native Tyreke Smith visited Alabama this past weekend and appeared to enjoy it. The Buckeyes are still the favorite to land Smith, but both Alabama and Penn State are working on getting a commitment from him as well.

LGHL J.T. Barrett is playing the best football of his career

J.T. Barrett is playing the best football of his career

usa_today_10347069.0.jpg

The senior quarterback has been on-point for the past five games, and looks to keep rolling.

“I just feel like there’s a good chemistry on offense. The receivers and quarterback are playing at a very high level. Very efficient. J.T.’s efficiency was elite.”

-Urban Meyer, via Ryan Ginn, Land of 10

After yet another explosive performance against Nebraska on Saturday, it seems that senior quarterback J.T. Barrett is playing the best football of his career at Ohio State--and that includes that time he led the Buckeyes to a berth in the College Football Playoff and finished fifth in the Heisman voting as a redshirt freshman.

There is no denying that Barrett had a rough patch that stretched from the conclusion of last season to this year’s Week 2 matchup with Oklahoma. Things began to unravel against Michigan, and flaws were fully exposed versus Clemson as the Buckeyes looked utterly ineffective on offense. This season, fans did not see the downfield passing against Indiana which was promised under the regime of Kevin Wilson, and problems finally culminated as Barrett went 19-for-35 for no touchdowns and a pick against Oklahoma.

But, like in 2014 after the Buckeyes’ loss to Virginia Tech, Barrett has rebounded in a big way. While it is apparent that the five opponents faced since Oklahoma have been varying degrees of inferior competition, what cannot be dismissed is the fact that Barrett has thrown for more than 1,300 yards, 18 touchdowns and no--as in zero--interceptions. Tack on four more rushing touchdowns, and Barrett looks like one of the best quarterbacks in the NCAA. In fact, he leads the country in total passing touchdowns with 21 on the season.

Still, doubters remain, pointing out that the sub-par competition cannot be denied, and that Barrett can’t perform when it counts against some of the best teams in the country. Now, after a bye week, however, the senior quarterback has a chance to right these wrongs as the second-ranked Nittany Lions come to Columbus. It will be the staunchest defense Ohio State has faced all season, and will give the revamped offense the spotlight they have been looking for to show just how far they have come since Oklahoma.

“Practice has been very competitive. That is how we have been able to put together performances like this.”

-Defensive end Tyquan Lewis, via James Grega, Eleven Warriors

Like the offense, the Ohio State defense has made significant strides since its somewhat abysmal start to the season. Entering the year with a highly-touted defensive line, the loss of three starters in the secondary to the first round of the NFL Draft seemed something of an afterthought. However, after two games allowing more than 800 total yards passing, the Buckeyes’ defense found itself ranked dead last in the NCAA in passing yards allowed.

The only way to go was up at that point and, fortunately for the Buckeyes, they faced Army the following week. The Black Knights have now won two games this season without completing a single pass. Against the Buckeyes, Army had a relative passing frenzy, completing two passes for 19 yards. Still, it was better than what Ohio State had been allowing, and helped to improve the confidence of the young secondary. The Buckeyes continued to get better in this area, allowing 88 yards against UNLV, 92 against Rutgers and 16 against Maryland. The unit regressed against the Huskers Saturday, giving up 303 yards through the air, including two big passing plays, but the defense has found itself ranked 30th in the country in passing yards allowed--a huge improvement over just a few weeks ago. Credit not only good practice habits, but leaders on the units taking ownership for their improvement as a defense.

The Buckeyes are now set to face their most worthy adversary since Oklahoma in Penn State. With Heisman frontrunner Saquon Barkley at running back, and Trace McSorley at the helm, it will be a tough test for an improving defense. But with an experienced unit up front and a consistently-improving secondary, the Penn State offense itself may be facing its most staunch opponent of the season.

“We reflect back to 2014 quite a bit. But I think we’re getting our own identity, something that’s different than 2014. You hear Coach talking about great practices. I think that’s building our confidence to go out here on Saturday and play well.”

-Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

The Ohio State Buckeyes have experienced a very perceptible shift in their offensive performance over the past five games. While it is easy to believe that this team is the same one that lost to Oklahoma just a few short weeks ago, the players and coaches on offense think differently. This change is not simply the result of playing lesser opponents, nor is it something transient that can evaporate on a whim.

No, the changes that have occurred on the offensive side of the ball are the result of a shift in responsibility among the play callers. With Urban Meyer, Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day sharing responsibility in a coherent and methodical way. This structure is in sharp contrast to the 2015 and 2016 structures in which it often was not apparent who was actually in charge of calling plays on the field. The result was an offense that never really got off the ground, and a quarterback whose considerable skills were masked by a total lack of flow consistency coming from the coaching staff.

Now, Wilson and Day have revitalized the offense with new packages that fans haven’t seen before. Barrett does look different, and he is using his personnel much more wisely than he has in the past. The offensive line is dominating the front-seven of opposing defenses. Receivers have finally found a rhythm with their quarterback. The whole unit has upped its tempo, making it difficult for opposing defenses to get set with the right personnel on the field. And practices have become much smoother, contributing more and more to solid and consistent play on game day.

This type of sustained dominance looks a lot like the offense of 2014, which, even with the loss of Barrett to injury against Michigan, never stopped rolling behind Ezekiel Elliott and Cardale Jones. The team seems to grow stronger each week and, with a balanced run-pass threat, could be one of the best offenses at Ohio State in recent memory.

Busy weekend for former Buckeyes; Braxton scores, Hyde could be traded, and Jalin got cut.

After a pretty quiet Week 5 for former Ohio State studs in the NFL, they all stepped up their games in a massive way for their Week 6 matchups. Some are still on the sidelines with either injuries or bye weeks, but those that suited up made their time and effort count.

Heuerman’s first career TD

After being drafted by the Broncos in 2015, then missing his rookie season due to injury, Buckeye TE Jeff Heuerman is finally finding his place on Denver’s offense. He had minimal production in 2016, claiming just nine receptions all season for 141 yards. This season has started similarly with just four receptions in five games for 59 yards, but the tight-end finally made his way into the endzone for his first score in the NFL.

Buckeyes feast for New Orleans

Normally, the headliner out of New Orleans is wideout Michael Thomas, but this week it’s his three Buckeye brothers are the ones making headlines with big games. The Saints beat the Lions 52-38 with two Ohio State alumni snagging TDs and another making his second career sack.

For the defense, Vonn Bell had a big day with five total tackles (two for loss) and a big time sack on Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford to give the ball back to the New Orleans offense. Not to be outdone, rookie Marshon Lattimore had five tackles and two pass breakups in addition to his 27-yard Pick-6.

Over on offense, Saints’ wideout Ted Ginn Jr. finished the day with 66 yards on four catches and a 20-yard touchdown to cap off the day.

Jalin Marshall cut by the Jets

After serving a four-game suspension to start the 2017 season — received for violating the league’s performance enhancing drug policy — the Buckeye receiver was waived. The New York Jets decided to part ways with the wideout just a week after activating him to the roster, and just a day before the team was set to play the Patriots.

Marshall signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agency shortly after falling out of the seven round event in 2016. He spent his rookie season splitting time between offensive snaps and return duties. Unfortunately, some of the same drop issues Marshall had at Ohio State had seeped into his game at the next level, and resulted in the Jets benching him from special teams to finish out the season.

The receiver finished his first season in the NFL with 14 receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns — the Buckeye played in 10 games during his rookie season, having missed two games to a labrum tear in Week 3. Marshall also fielded 13 kickoffs for 324 yards and 18 punt returns for 100 yards before being benched.

El Guapo drawing trade rumors

After finishing the week with two touchdowns, Niners running back Carlos Hyde is apparently drawing interest from teams around the league. San Francisco’s head coach Kyle Shanahan rebuffed the rumors that the Niners were interested in shopping the Buckeye around — even if they were, his production and snap count from Sunday would prove that to be a poor business decision.

Plays of the week

Braxton Miller

After being a healthy scratch for the Texans earlier in the season, the former Buckeye standout finally made his name known in the NFL. He hasn’t had the immediate success at WR that most assumed from the former QB, but as Houston’s offense gets a boost with a consistent, albeit rookie, quarterback, Miller’s production should be on the upswing as well. He may have finished the day Sunday with -5 yards, but he did get into the endzone in spectacular fashion.

Joey Bosa

Another week, another big time sack from second-year player Joey Bosa. The reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year racked up three tackles on Sunday, 1.0 sack and a forced fumble on the way to the Chargers’ one-point victory over the Raiders.

Other Notables from Week 6

  • After two weeks inactive for the Arizona Cardinals, guard Alex Boone finally not only made the lineup, but did so as a starter on Sunday.
  • The Giants made the surprising move to bench DB Eli Apple for a few plays last week, and it was enough to shake up the former Buckeye. Having never been benched before at any other level in his football career, Apple went on to have a good game in primetime on Sunday Night Football with five solo tackles and three pass breakups.
  • Darron Lee has been hot and cold in his two-year career for the Jets, but on Sunday he had a pretty decent day despite the task of guarding the much-taller Rob Gronkowsi. Lee finished the day with six total tackles, a pass breakup and a forced fumble against the Patriots.
  • Centers and offensive lineman are often overlooked, but Buckeye and Packers center Corey Linsley is not one of them, and this time, it’s not for a good reason. He’s been omitted from the past few week’s NFL recaps because of his either lackluster or poor performance. He’s certainly a staple for Green Bay’s offensive line, but the line did QB Aaron Rodgers little to no favors the past few weeks in terms of pressure and hits — and this was even before Rodgers broke his collarbone.
Injury Report and Inactives

  • The Indianapolis Buckeye Colts (Johnathan Hankins, Malik Hooker, John Simon) will face off against the Tennessee Titans on Monday Night Football. They will be without one of their Ohio State brothers as Colts’ guard Jack Mewhort was designated to IR over the weekend for a knee injury.
  • Rookie standout Gareon Conley was inactive again with lingering shin issues. The Buckeye is scheduled to see a doctor on Tuesday which could either sideline him for a couple of weeks or clear him to return to the field.
  • Panthers’ safety Kurt Coleman is still sidelined with a knee injury. He’s about two weeks into a month-long recovery.
  • For the third straight week, 3rd string QB Cardale Jones was inactive for the Chargers Sunday.
Bye Week

The Arizona native will visit later this month.

After visiting the Ohio State campus over the summer to camp with the Buckeyes, 2020 quarterback Jack Miller will make the trek once again from Arizona to get more familiar with what Urban Meyer and crew are putting together in Columbus.

Like many other highly sought-after recruits, Miller will be on hand when the Buckeyes mix it up with the Nittany Lions of Penn State on October 28, according to Bill Kurelic of Bucknuts.

Only a sophomore, with more than enough time left in the recruiting process, the 6’4, 210-pounder already holds double digit scholarship offers. Still receiving interest from new programs, Ohio State joins Florida State, North Carolina, Ole Miss, UCLA, and others in the pursuit of Miller.

Still trying to lead Chaparral High School in Scottsdale to a winning record, Miller, who reportedly has the Buckeyes among his leaders, has shined since returning back to action after missing time due to transfer rules.

Showing why he’s a top rated sophomore, the four-star prospect has completed 59 of his 123 passing attempts for nearly 900 yards through the air and 11 touchdowns, compared to only two interceptions, through his team's first five games.

2020 CB wants to visit OSU

While Jack Miller will be on the Ohio State campus later this month, another class of 2020 prospect is hoping to make it to Columbus in the near future.

Over the last few years the Buckeye coaching staff has put in work trying to build a pipeline into the state of Texas. After landing current Buckeyes such as J.T. Barrett, J.K. Dobbins, Jeffrey Okudah, and Baron Browning, recruits from the Longhorn State are definitely noticing Ohio State.

Taking to his Twitter page to share with the world his hopeful plans, New Caney (TX) sophomore cornerback Dwight McGlothern stated that he would like to visit Oregon, Florida State, and Ohio State.

I’m trying make my way to OREGON , Florida State and Ohio state !!! Going to be lit !!!!

— Dwight McGlothern jr (@DMcglothern2) October 15, 2017

The Buckeyes reportedly offered the 6’1, 161-pound McGlothern over the summer. Considered a top prospect in the sophomore class, Ohio State isn’t the only program trying to add the talented defensive back to their roster. Oregon, Alabama, Georgia, LSU, and Michigan are also among the schools to dish out early scholarship offers to the four-star prospect so far.

Quick Hitter

  • Per Russ Wood of Rivals, Ohio State checked in on Osceola (FL) four-star power forward Omar Payne while out on the recruiting trail on Friday morning. Payne, a 6’9 class of 2019 standout, currently holds scholarship offers from the likes of Clemson, Florida, Florida State, and Texas.
