The 2019 star is considered the No. 2 player in North Carolina.

As we hit the midweek, we are slowly (but surely) getting to another Saturday where the Ohio State Buckeyes will take the field. This week, the Buckeyes are on the road for a primetime meeting with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

While the fellas from Lincoln, NE are the focus on the gridiron, recruiting is a focus that virtually never ends. Luckily for Urban Meyer, his program sells itself—that’s what happens when you’re a national (and dominant) brand.

On Tuesday, the Scarlet and Gray got some good news on their recruiting efforts.

And then there were 10

Savion Jackson (Clayton, NC/Clayton) was the bearer of good news for the Buckeyes on Tuesday evening. On Twitter, the four-star defensive end from North Carolina released his top 10 list.

My Top 1️⃣0️⃣ in no particular order‼️‼️ pic.twitter.com/hbjnJ2F2b3

— Savion (@savionjac11) October 11, 2017

Ohio State joins a packed room with the last two national champions, the Alabama Crimson Tide and Clemson Tigers, respectively; home state programs North Carolina Tar Heels and NC State Wolfpack; SEC programs South Carolina and Tennessee; and Louisville and Penn State.

Before trimming his list down to 10, Jackson received 16 offers, according to his 247sports profile. A few of the teams that missed the cut: Florida, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh.

Jackson comes in at 6'3, 245 pounds, and is the 50th-best player in his class, according to 247sports. Additionally, the 247sports composite ranks Jackson as the No. 5 player for 2019 at the strong-side defensive end position and the No. 2 player in the state of North Carolina. However, 247sports’ own ranking has Jackson as the No. 1 player in the Tar Heel State, with Quavaris Crouch as the No. 2 player. (In the composite rankings, Crouch is No. 1 in the state.)

Here are some highlights of Jackson that were posted on Hudl:

According to the Hudl page, Jackson has a 40-yard dash time of 4.7 seconds, a shuttle time of 4.3 seconds, and can squat 425 pounds.

There is still a lot of time left in the recruitment of Jackson, and if anything changes, we’ll let you know.

A clash with Clemson...but on the hardwood?

Pivoting to basketball, Chris Holtmann is in the lookout for another recruit to add to the Buckeyes. Yesterday, the new man in charge of the Scarlet and Gray honed in on four-star point guard Courtney Ramey, according to a tweet by Rivals.com basketball analyst Corey Evans.

David Padgett & Chris Holtmann, plus an assistant from Clemson were in today for top-50 2018 guard Courtney Ramey https://t.co/LbYqIIPlEc

— Corey Evans (@coreyevans_10) October 10, 2017

Rivals has the St. Louis, MO native as the 39th-best prospect in the 2018 class. At 247sports, Ramey comes in as the 46th-best prospect—but the overall 247sports composite has him at 37th. So, the feelings are pretty similar: Ramey can ball.

As noted in the tweet, David Padgett—the new guy in charge of Louisville basketball—and a Clemson assistant are intrigued with Ramey as well. Currently, the 6'3 PG has 16 offers, according to 247sports, and the Buckeyes are one of them.

At the moment, OSU has four commits in the 2018 class, with one of them being a PG in three-star Duane Washington. Ramey is considered one of the best in the state of Missouri, and would be a huge get for the Buckeyes.

Quick hit

  • 2018 OSU commit Max Wray was named an Army All-American. Wray holds a 4-star rating, and is the eighth-best offensive tackle in his class.

Nebraska’s coach says J.T. Barrett is as good as ever.

“Urban Meyer on Tuesday said the play on which Ward was ejected was sent to the Big Ten for review, and that it was deemed the incorrect call.”

-Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer did not have his weekly press conference on Monday as he was out-of-state visiting a player’s family member who has been having health issues recently.

So, on Tuesday, Meyer spoke with reporters about some of the things on his mind following last Saturday’s game against the Maryland Terrapins. One item that will surely please and annoy Ohio State fans is that apparently the Big Ten Conference told the head coach that stud cornerback Denzel Ward should not have been flagged for targeting on his hellacious hit against Tavion Jacobs.

Meyer said that, as is customary every week, the team sent tape to the Big Ten office to ask for clarification on calls, and while the conference supported the call on the field (as referees make split-second decisions, and they are instructed to air on the side of safety), the fault actually lies with the replay official, who should have overturned the call upon review.

The fact that the inaccurate call was allowed to stand frustrated Meyer, to say the least.

"Concerned, irate -- all of the above," Meyer said. "It's not the person on the field. Those are snap judgements. I still to this day don't understand how that happens. That's for the higher ups to figure out. 'Concerned' is probably not strong enough."

Jacobs was dispossessed of the ball on the play, and while the officials ruled it an incomplete pass initially, the ball was immediately picked up by Ward. Therefore, had the targeting been correctly overturned, the replay official could have then looked to see if Jacobs catching the ball and turning up-field was enough to count as a completion, and thus awarding the Buckeyes another turnover.

Ward’s decleating occurred in the first half of the Maryland game, so he sat out the second half, and therefore was already eligible to start on Saturday against Nebraska.

“Riley moved ahead to the Buckeyes on Monday, and talked of a big task on Saturday night with Ohio State ‘hitting on all cylinders’ since a loss to Oklahoma.”

-Rich Kaipust, Omaha World Herald

If you cast your memory back to last year’s match-up with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, quarterback J.T. Barrett led the Ohio State Buckeyes to an impressive 62-3 victory. Barrett threw for 290 yards and four TDs.

Despite the fact that Husker head coach Mike Riley said that the team had watched some film from last year’s game, he believes that Barrett is playing as well as ever right now.

Riley said, "The guy's had a lot of experience playing football, and I think it shows more and more all the time. I think the comfort level he has is high."

While I certainly don’t disagree that Barrett has seemingly turned the corner working in Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day’s new Chip Kelly-inspired offense, it is certainly startling to say out loud, when you consider what he has done in his four years on the field. For the record, LGHL’s Christopher Jason agrees with Riley after looking at the game film.

If Nebraska wants to avoid a repeat of last year’s beat-down, and in doing so, derail Ohio State’s month of domination, they will need to upset Barrett’s comfort level, and force him back into the habit of doubting his own eyes, and not trusting his receivers’ ability to make plays.

That has been the difference over the past month (and in the Rutgers and Maryland games especially) that has allowed Barrett to go from fans calling for his job, to performing well enough to give the Bucks a legitimate chance to get back into playoff conversation.

“So it's that group -- Burrell, Knox, and Pridgeon -- vying for the job, and their first career start at Ohio State.”

-Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

Another issue that Meyer discussed with the media today was what the team plans to do to compensate for starting right guard Branden Bowen being out for the season. When the newest depth chart was released earlier today, the starter was listed as either Matthew Burrell (who replaced Bowen against Maryland) or Demetrius Knox.

However, when Meyer spoke to reporters, he threw another name into the mix, Malcolm Pridgeon, who is currently listed as the second-team left guard.

Meyer’s announcement that Burrell, Knox, and Pridgeon were competing for the spot should put to rest any speculation that potential All-American center Billy Price might move over to his old position allowing back-up Brady Taylor to handle the snapping duties.

If the Ohio State offense is going to continue to improve and be able to compete against the more elite teams on the second half of its schedule, the right guard position will need to be solidified; especially since Isaiah Prince is at right tackle, and he seems to have been the weak link on the offensive line all season.

Sometimes the best cure for a struggling defense is four straight games against lesser competition!

For the fourth consecutive week, the Buckeyes pounded an inferior opponent into submission. A quick recap of the season through it’s halfway point:

  • After a slow start against Indiana, Ohio State won easily by four touchdowns.
  • The Buckeyes were beaten soundly by Oklahoma 31-16 in Week 2.
  • Ohio State outscored Army, UNLV, Rutgers, and Maryland 210-42 over the past four weeks.
  • The starting defense allowed just 14 of those 42 points, and an average of just 204.25 total yards per game.

Sure, beating the pulp out of the perennial bottom feeders of the Big Ten isn’t as exhilarating as ice fishing or some of the Buckeyes’ top-10 ranked matchups, but it certainly beats losing to the likes of Iowa State or Troy.

Let’s take a look at some of the Buckeyes’ stand-out moments from Saturday’s beat down of a Maryland offense that totaled 66 (!!!) total yards of offense.

HOW WAS THAT TARGETING

Joey Bosa’s college career ended on an overturned quarterback-hit-turned interception, but at least that ruling made sense from a safety standpoint. It’s hard to say the same about Denzel Ward’s mauling of the Terrapins.

Ohio State plays a ton of man coverage, as well as cover four. In both schemes, the outside cornerbacks are responsible for covering their man deep. For this reason, Maryland believed that they had an easy completion on a routine out-route with Ward getting chased out of the picture by his man’s go-route. Based on the reactions from Ohio State’s secondary, they appeared to in fact by playing cover four, which makes Ward’s gamble to come off of his man and lay the lumber that much more impressive:

Denzel Ward ejected for targeting on this hit. What do y'all think? pic.twitter.com/MRAtue5ltN

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) October 7, 2017

Ward should’ve had a touchdown here, but becoming Twitter famous will have to do. The play itself is nothing new from Ward, as he’s flashed his willingness to lay big hits throughout his career on kickoff coverage, as well on Oklahoma’s 6’5” 250-pound tight end in 2016. It’s fair to say he isn’t the same-caliber cover-corner as Gareon Conley or Marshon Lattimore, but neither of those aforementioned studs brought Ward’s hitting mentality to the table either.

The development of Chase Young appears to be coming along nicely

Ohio State’s abundance of ridiculously talented defensive linemen can be taken for granted sometimes, especially when it comes to the unit’s overall depth. Take Young, the No. 7 overall player in the 2016 recruiting class, who notched his first of many career sacks during the third quarter Saturday:

Just as Joel Klatt was calling him a future first round NFL Draft pick, Chase Young forces a fumble pic.twitter.com/ij1Xj1nQ6b

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) October 7, 2017

At 6’5” 240 pounds, Young is ready to contribute right away — and has. He’s mostly been used in specific pass rush situations, if at all, before being deployed with the Buckeyes already up by several scores, but Urban Meyer listed Young as just one of seven defensive champions from last week alongside starters Jerome Baker, Nick Bosa, Jalyn Holmes, Sam Hubbard, Tyquan Lewis, and Dante Booker. We definitely haven’t seen the best of Young yet, but he’s already playing at a high-enough level to understand why Holmes unironically suggested Young could be a future No. 1 overall pick.

The Silver Bullets finally find the end zone!

The 2016 Buckeyes defense scored so often that they literally out-scored the Bowling Green, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Rutgers offenses through the first four weeks of the season. It took a bit longer this season, but a familiar beast helped a familiar playmaker score the first defensive touchdown of the season:

Nick Bosa with the strip, Jerome Baker with the scoop and score. 14-0, Buckeyes. pic.twitter.com/YSRoJ8OOZV

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) October 7, 2017

Maryland attempted to throw a quick pass to the sideline, but Bosa’s ridiculously smooth rip past the Terrapins left tackle was too much to overcome. Of course, Holmes and Hubbard had also moved the line of scrimmage backwards by five yards in sheer seconds, demonstrating the difficulty in trying to block four future-NFL defensive ends at once.

The first half of the season is over, and the Buckeyes now have three conference road games to go, along with two ranked match-ups at home, over the course of their final six games.

The final: 62-14, Ohio State

Defensive player of the game: Nick Bosa (5 tackles, 2 TFLs, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble)

Defensive play of the game: Nick Bosa strip sack leads to Jerome Baker touchdown.

Next Victim: Nebraska. Keep it classy, Columbus.

The Buckeyes work to replace Branden Bowen, and make some changes on defense.

Ohio State is coming off their fourth blowout in as many weeks, but they have one more test against a conference opponent before the glorious, glorious open week. While fans might not love the week off quite so much, it allows players who have been beat up for seven straight weeks to let their bodies take a break and recover.

This is increasingly important as the Buckeyes lost starting right guard Branden Bowen during Saturday’s matchup. Fracturing both his fibula and tibia, Bowen underwent surgery and is out until 2018. Urban Meyer noted three guys were in the running for the starting spot: Matthew Burrell, Malcolm Pridgeon and Demetrius Knox. Turns out, Burrell and Knox will battle for the starting spot, and Pridgeon was moved over to the left side of the line.

Over on defense, Dre’mont Jones is back in the starting lineup, and Jordan Fuller has taken over as the solo started at safety, with Erick Smith behind him at No. 2.

Without further ado, here is the latest depth chart for Ohio State:

The senior quarterback has improved in every game since Oklahoma.

Stop complaining about the lack of competition when it comes to Ohio State’s recent offensive success. Since Oklahoma put the clamps down on J.T. Barrett and the passing game, they’ve had a few games against inferior opponents to get their timing down and to open up the playbook a bit, and it’s done wonders for Barrett and the receiver’s confidence as a whole.

Even though the deep ball still isn’t where it needs to be, Barrett is starting to look like his old self. He looks calm, cool and collected in the pocket and his trust with his receivers has grown. Barrett is surveying the field and going through his options before releasing the football. Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day have done a great job at making things easier for the starting quarterback and his progress is evident.

  • Here’s a good example of Barrett’s trust in his arm and his receiver. Johnnie Dixon has killed the hitch (and spot) routes this season, and Barrett really zipped it in there. His velocity on intermediate routes has improved immensely.

J.T. Barrett threads the needle on 3rd down to Johnnie Dixon. pic.twitter.com/Yw8WsyFw7r

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) October 7, 2017
  • Here’s a second example of Barrett’s trust in his arm and his receiver. Barrett initially had K.J. Hill, but when the safety came downhill to help on Hill, that opened up just enough space for Barrett to hit Binjimen Victor in the back of the end zone. He was able to unload a higher pass to Victor, where only his 6’4 frame could catch the football. It was a great call by Wilson and a great read by the quarterback.

Binjimen Victor is a problem in the red zone (another great throw from Barrett). pic.twitter.com/2gDmVH5Gk0

— Christopher Jason (@cjason112) October 7, 2017
  • Barrett’s worst decision/ throw of the day came on a receiver screen to Parris Campbell, when he double pumped on the throw, risking an interception inside the Ohio State 10-yard line. He saw the defensive back beat Austin Mack’s block, double pumped, then threw the ball. Barrett finished 5-of-5 on screen passes.
  • Another reason for Barrett’s recent success has been his ability to throw the receiver open, rather than wait for the receiver to be perfectly open. He’s starting to hit the receiver on their break, which continues to show the trust that he’s developing with the wideouts. There were numerous throws during the first two weeks where he waited on the receiver to gain separation at the completion of the route, rather than trusting the receiver on his break. This is a huge step forward.
  • Marcus Baugh isn’t going to catch 60-plus balls in this offense, but he continues to make plays when called upon. Even though the numbers aren’t there, Baugh’s mix of size and athleticism will make him a pretty good NFL player.
  • This touchdown throw to Austin Mack is the best throw Barrett has made this season, and one of the better throws of his career. Wilson rolled Barrett out to the left and had him make the throw across his body. Mack fought off physical man coverage on an out pattern. As noted above, Mack was just coming out of his break when Barrett pulled the trigger, hitting the only spot where Mack could catch the ball uncontested. It was an extremely tough throw, but once again, Barrett passed the test.

Barkley continues to make plays for the Nittany Lions, and the Buckeyes forced another blowout.

We’re back at it with another Big Ten Power Rankings. The last time I did this, which was a few weeks ago, Michigan was in third and Ohio State was still suspect—and I didn’t really know where to place the rest of the teams in the conference.

Entering Week 7 of the season, however, it’s a lot easier to determine where teams rank. We’re seeing who the contenders are. We’re seeing who the pretenders are. And we’re seeing what teams are firmly in the basement.

Let’s take a look at what the rankings look like this week:

1. Penn State Nittany Lions

Like the earlier power ranking, the Nittany Lions are at the top. Saquon Barkley, their star running back and favorite for the Heisman Trophy, keeps on dazzling.

Last week, though, Barkley was contained against Northwestern—but he still managed to pick up 75 yards and two touchdowns. PSU rolled to a 31-7 win, and now have their bye week. With the exception of their last-second, night game win at Iowa on Sept. 23, James Franklin’s program has cruised to victories.

The Nittany Lions are the defending conference champs, and at this moment, are on the path to repeating. However, there is one team that has a real shot at taking down the Nittany Lions—and they’re No. 2 on the list.

This week’s opponent: Bye Week

2. Ohio State Buckeyes

The Oct. 28 showdown in The ‘Shoe between PSU and OSU will be a battle between the top two teams in the Big Ten. Ohio State has found a rhythm, even though their search was in the midst of blowout wins against UNLV, Rutgers and Maryland.

Quarterback J.T. Barrett has found his groove in the air, and there seems to be a greater trust between himself and the receiving corps. The Buckeyes will lose offensive lineman Branden Bowen for the season, but we won’t know the true effect of that injury until the offensive line (and pass protection) gets tested. We’ll see how that line protects Barrett against Nebraska this Saturday night.

usa_today_10332968.jpg
Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports
Drive and Dive: Ohio State posted 62 points against Maryland. Entering their contest with Nebraska, OSU has scored 50+ points in their last three games.

Mike Weber and J.K. Dobbins continue to dominate on the ground, and the defense is stifling the opposition’s passing game. Three weeks ago, the pass defense was suspect at best; now, it’s back up to meeting expectations.

This week’s opponent: at Nebraska (7:30 p.m. ET | Game broadcast on: Fox Sports 1)

3. Wisconsin Badgers

After pulling away from Nebraska last week, the Badgers are off to a 5-0 start to their season. A big reason for the perfect start: red zone defense. Once teams get to the Wisconsin red zone, they have a tough time finding the end zone. Only 33.3 percent of red zone drives get past the Badger defense for a touchdown—which is the best in the nation.

This week, Purdue gets to see what the Wisconsin defense is about. If we’re going off history, the Boilermakers’ bid for an upset doesn’t seem likely, as they have lost the last 11 to the Badgers. With Wiscy at home, the tough task of an upset gets a little bit tougher. Alex Hornibrook, Wisconsin’s QB, is the most efficient passer in the conference (167.2) and has thrown for a touch over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns.

This week’s opponent: vs. Purdue (3:30 p.m. ET | Game broadcast on: Big Ten Network)

4. Michigan State Spartans

Surging up the conference ranks is Sparty. They come off a victory against Big Brother, Michigan, in what could’ve been described as monsoon conditions last Saturday night in Ann Arbor. Mark Dantonio’s squad forced bad passes from the Wolverines’ QB John O’Korn, and collected a whopping five turnovers in the rivalry game for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. Third down efficiency was a problem with the Spartans, granted, nobody really played well once the rain picked up in the second half.

This week, it’s another primetime matchup as Michigan State travels to Minnesota. A win here, and the declaration that MSU is back becomes valid.

This week’s opponent: at Minnesota (8 p.m. ET | Game broadcast on: Big Ten Network)

5. Michigan Wolverines

Who wants a Michigan fun fact? (It’s a good one.)

Since taking over for Michigan two seasons ago, Jim Harbaugh is 1-4 against Michigan State and Ohio State.

Fun fact No. 2: Third place in the Big Ten East has been the Wolverines best finish in the Harbaugh Era.

(Sweet, sweet schadenfreude.)

Michigan looks to get back on track against Indiana this Saturday, and they will need it; the Nittany Lions get the Wolverines on Oct. 21.

Their starting quarterback, Wilton Speight, is out for the foreseeable future with three broken vertebrae, so the contest with the Hoosiers is even more important in terms of making sure the QB and offense are on the same page.

If the Wolverines get the win on Saturday, they’ll hit a milestone: 500 Big Ten conference wins. Which is the best you can do after getting duped at home by Little Brother.

This week’s opponent: at Indiana (noon ET | Game broadcast on: ABC)

6. Iowa Hawkeyes

After beating Illinois, the fighting Kirk Ferentz’s get the week off. The Hawkeyes have done a little bit of everything this season: won a rival game against Iowa State, went 3-0 against non-conference foes, and got their heart ripped out by two conference opponents.

This week’s opponent: Bye Week

7. Purdue Boilermakers

We learned last week that a train stops a boat. Now, can a train stop a Badger?

It’ll be a tough test, as the Badgers’ running back Jonathan Taylor just came off a Ron Dayne-esque performance against the Cornhuskers. They’ve come close this season in ranked contests, as Louisville and Michigan both avoided upsets from the Boilermakers.

Sandra Dukes-USA TODAY Sports
(Un)Lucky No. 7?: Purdue faces No. 7 Wisconsin on Saturday. Historically, the Boilermakers are 2-7 against a team that holds the No. 7 ranking in the AP Poll.

If the upset does happen, David Blough will need to be near perfect in the air, and Tario Fuller will need to help on the rushing end of things. Even that might not be enough, but Purdue has been a team that scares the daylights out of top ranked teams. (At least in Ohio State’s case in the Tressel Era.)

This week’s opponent: at Wisconsin (3:30 p.m. ET | Game broadcast on: Big Ten Network)

8. Maryland Terrapins

Things were coming up Milhouse for the Terps after beating Texas in Week 1. Like Milhouse (The Simpsons character), things quickly unraveled for D.J. Durkin’s team. They lost to UCF, and then got thoroughly—as the cool kids would say— son’d by Ohio State last week.

(It’s not every game you go out and surrender 62 points—with a third string QB no less!)

Looking past the Ohio State thumping, Maryland gets Northwestern. Just like NU, this is a pick-me-up game for UMD, too. Actually, it’s more than that for Maryland: it’s an afternoon, 5-hour energy shot to keep you moving forward.

After Northwestern, Maryland makes the trek to Camp Randall Stadium to face Wisconsin. If things go badly against the Wildcats, then you can be doubly sure things will fall apart against the Badgers.

Right now is not a good time to be collecting L’s. Maryland is on the edge of that slippery slope.

This week’s opponent: Northwestern (3:30 p.m. ET | Game broadcast on: ESPN2)

9. Northwestern Wildcats

The Wildcats got the Barkley experience last week, and now look to move on from getting roasted by the Nittany Lions. They have the perfect pick-me-up game: the Maryland Terrapins.

Running back Justin Jackson leads NU in rushing, and that will come in handy against the Terps. Offensive yards may come as a premium, as UMD gives up an average of 142.2 in the air and 161.1 on the ground.

If that wasn’t bad enough for Northwestern, they have to go on the road this week, and are riding a two-game losing streak.

This week’s opponent: at Maryland (3:30 p.m. ET | Game broadcast on: ESPN2)

10. Minnesota Golden Gophers

Rowing the boat has seem to hit some rocks in recent weeks. P.J. Fleck has dropped games to Maryland and Purdue, and is now on that slippery slope of collecting losses. With Michigan State coming to visit, it may be a bad evening in Minneapolis.

This week’s opponent: vs. Michigan State (8 p.m. ET | Game broadcast on: Big Ten Network)

11. Indiana Hoosiers

Going into homecoming fresh off a win against Charleston Southern, the Hoosiers get the Wolverines. That momentum, albeit came from a 27-0 win of CSU, will be needed. The Hoosier defense allowed zero passing yards last week and got their first shutout since 1993.

So far, though, IU has beat the teams they are supposed to beat, and have been throttled by the teams we thought they would get throttled by.

A win on homecoming will move them right up the ranks, and a loss won’t really do much at all.

This week’s opponent: vs. Michigan (noon ET | Game broadcast on: ABC)

12. Nebraska Cornhuskers

Once again, Nebraska faces a team that is ranked No. 9 in the country. Last week, it didn’t go so well, as they lost to Wisconsin, 38-17. (Granted, they hung in the game at halftime. But still.)

OSU coming to town may sink the Cornhuskers season even more, as another loss seems eminent. However, the last time the Buckeyes rolled into Nebraska, they lost. Times have changed, though—and Joe Bauserman isn’t the Ohio State QB anymore.

This week’s opponent: vs. Ohio State (7:30 p.m. ET | Game broadcast on: Fox Sports 1)

13. Illinois Fighting Illini

After starting the season 2-0, the Fighting Illini have been owned in their last three contests. Big L’s against South Florida, Nebraska and Iowa have slid Lovie Smith’s squad down in the basement of the power rankings.

If they were going to climb up, it will take a couple of conference wins, though, as they get Rutgers at home this week.

While the program from Champaign, Ill., is in the penultimate spot, it’s sorta expected; this season, the Illini have started 13 freshman. That’s more than any team in the nation. If there was a bright spot: Their special teams is doing wellthis year, as they’ve blocked three kicks.

(Another bright spot: Saturday’s game is Social Media Day, so fans will be getting some goodies).

This week’s opponent: vs. Rutgers (noon ET | Game broadcast on: Big Ten Network)

14. Rutgers Scarlet Knights

I feel bad for Chris Ash. His team has been son’d by literally everyone in the Big Ten. This isn’t a 2017 problem; it happened all of last season, too.

As Ash looks for his first conference win since leaving Columbus, Ohio for Piscataway, N.J., his best shot will be against Illinois. His team comes off a bye week, so that helps in the injury recovery and preparation categories.

However, if he can’t get the win on Saturday, he may once again pull off an 0-fer, as Purdue, Michigan State, Michigan and Penn State are on the schedule.

(I just really want to see him win a conference game.)

This week’s opponent: vs. Rutgers (noon ET | Game broadcast on: Big Ten Network)

4-star safety commit Josh Proctor took a visit to Oklahoma last weekend. What does it mean?

There is only one true certainty when it comes to recruiting, and that is that there are no certainties until National Signing Day. Until recruits physically sign their letters of intent, it's anybody’s game.

Understanding this philosophy is one of the reasons Urban Meyer has become such a dominant force in the college football recruiting world. Even if a recruit has verbally made it known that they want to play for a certain school and coach, nothing is a done deal and the best recruiters in the country don’t stop recruiting a kid they want until the very end.

Meyer has become notorious for flipping recruits in his tenure at Ohio State, but he has also found himself on the other side of that situation. One of the names that has constantly floated around as a Buckeye commit that could eventually leave the program is Josh Proctor (Owasso, OK/Owasso).

The four-star safety committed to the Buckeyes in somewhat shocking fashion. It wasn’t that Ohio State came out of nowhere (like four-star DT Haskell Garrett in the 2017 recruiting class) but rather the timing of the commitment surprised people. It was expected that the Oklahoma native would visit both the Sooners and the Buckeyes before coming to a decision, but that was not the case, as Proctor committed to the Buckeyes on April 15.

Despite his commitment though, Oklahoma never backed off and has continued pursuing him, as can only be expected. Fortunately for Ohio State, Proctor has said and done all the right things and has never appeared to sway on his decision.

That is, until this past weekend, when he visited Oklahoma. While the visit had been in the works for some time now, the fact that he did it quietly reignited the talks of him flipping from the Buckeyes.

So now what?

Nothing much has changed. Proctor isn’t the only recruit committed to a school while seeing what other schools have to offer; he isn’t even the only Ohio State commit visiting other programs. 5-star QB commit Emory Jones has taken multiple official visits since committing, but a flip is not expected. The same goes for Proctor.

Proctor was just doing his due-diligence and making sure Ohio State is the right school for him. Luckily, it appears that the Buckeyes have nothing to worry about.

If Proctor was going to de-commit from the Buckeyes he likely would have done it during the weekend, and as of yet, he is still an Ohio State commit. Making matters even more hopeful for Ohio State, Proctor donned an Ohio State shirt the day before his visit while warming up for his own game.

Factoring in all of this, Ohio State is still the school most likely to see Proctor’s signature come signing day.

Ohio State offers blue-chip 2019 DT

Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaches have some of the best eyes for talent in the entire country. This ability to spot talent early on gives the program a head start in establishing relationships with top recruits, giving them a huge advantage.

The Buckeyes may have done just that Monday when they offered 2019 defensive tackle Mazi Smith (Grand Rapids, MI/East Kentwood).

— Mazi (@mazismith) October 10, 2017

The four-star DT has shown enough halfway through his junior season to be viewed as one of the top recruits in his class. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 7 DT and the No. 147 overall talent in the country.

Ohio State isn’t the only school showing interest in Smith, as he holds offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Louisville and Alabama.

Smith camped at Ohio State in the summer and appeared to be thrilled with the scholarship offer, even saying that he loves the coaching staff. Because of that, Ohio State instantly becomes a legitimate contender for him.

Ohio State misses on elite CB

Not long ago, four-star CB Houston Griffith (Bradenton, FL/IMG Academy) was viewed as an Ohio State lean. Earlier in the year Griffith made two trips to Columbus in twice as many months. He held the program in high regards, yet despite all of this, communication began to fade out.

Because of this, the Buckeyes never received an official visit from him and in turn, Griffith ended up committing to Florida State over weekend.

— Houston Griffith (@___HG3) October 8, 2017

This appears to be a case where Ohio State only has so many scholarships it can offer in a given year and there just wasn’t enough space for Griffith. The Buckeyes already have two CBs in this years class in Sevyn Banks and Marcus Hooker, and are actively recruiting five-star CB Anthony Cook.

Cook is one of the top priorities for Ohio State, and the Buckeyes are just one of two teams remaining with a legitimate chance in landing him, the other being Texas.

Griffith is a top ten CB in the 2018 recruiting class and is one of the top talents in the entire country. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 61 recruit in the entire class. If Ohio State would have continued to recruit him as strong as they were even just six months ago, he likely would have selected the Buckeyes as his collegiate school of choice. However, the Ohio State coaching staff apparently likes their chances to land Cook enough to pass on Griffith.
