Neither top-ranked teams’ special teams have fared well this season.

It was a little over a year ago that Penn State stunned then-No. 2 ranked Ohio State 24-21 in Happy Valley.

While the outcome itself came as a shocker, it was how the Nittany Lions pulled off the upset that really opened eyes.

After getting outplayed for most of the night, PSU blocked Tyler Durbin’s 45-yard field goal attempt and returned it 60 yards for the game-winning touchdown. Communication issues between the field goal unit and the coaching staff were primarily to blame.

We could see more of the same struggles when the two Big Ten rivals square off on Saturday.

The Buckeyes have overcome various problems on special teams in recent seasons. It was the field goal unit in 2016 and this year, it’s the kickoff group.

I’ll let our own Geoff Hamersley take it away.

“However, a pattern of miscues has cropped up with Ohio State’s special teams unit. Almost like clockwork, a kick gets sent out of the playing field every game. On the opening kick against Nebraska, Blake Haubeil sent the ball out of play. The second kickoff landed at the Cornhuskers’ 33, and was fair caught.

I’ll repeat that again: the kickoff was fair caught at the 33. (For those doing the math, that means the kickoff went roughly 32 yards, which is not good.) Granted, there was some wind in Lincoln, and that may have played a supporting role for why the kickoffs weren’t traveling deep. But three kickoffs reached the end zone on the night, and two of them ended up being touchbacks. There’s a consistency problem with the kicking unit, which is bizarre.”

This is probably the last thing you’d think a team like OSU would be dealing with midway through the college football season.

But here we are.

Heisman Trophy frontrunner Saquon Barkley and Miles Sanders have been PSU’s main kickoff returners, but Barkley is the one to watch for. He’s already scored a touchdown on a kick return and is averaging 30.3 yards per return.

And considering his track record versus the Buckeyes, it’s easy to imagine him taking another one the distance.

On the flip side are the Nittany Lions, who have their own nagging special teams quandaries.

Coming off a season in which he didn’t miss any field goals, kicker Tyler Davis is 6-of-13 on field goal tries this year. He isn’t solely to blame, though, as special teams coordinator Charles Huff explains to PennLive.

“Obviously from the outside eye, it's a struggle,” Huff said. “But internally, I see him at about the same spot he was at last year. Now you say, 'Well, he didn't miss any kicks last year.' OK, well he didn't miss any kicks, but you consider replacing the snapper, the holder and eliminate the blocked kicks, he's missed three on his own. Well I've seen him miss eight in practice before.”

Regardless if it’s been the kicking, protection by the line, or their new snapper and holder, PSU’s field goal unit is obviously concerning.

Facing one of best defenses in the country means Davis and Co. will likely have a few field goal opportunities. Failing to convert on one or more tries on the road would be problematic for the Nittany Lions, to say the least.

In any case, two potential playoff teams with essentially everything to lose at this point in the season will have to rely on unreliable special teams units to help win the day.

I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.

LGHL Five-star CB could pick Ohio State next week

A week ahead of his commitment date, five-star CB Anthony Cook is still unsure of who he will choose.

The Ohio State football program has a busy week ahead. Both players and coaches are preparing for one of its most anticipated match-ups this season as Penn State comes to Columbus. The Nittany Lions were the only team to beat the Buckeyes last year in the regular season, and you can be assured that Urban Meyer and the coaching staff are doing all they can to ensure the opposite occurs this year.

Because of the hype surrounding the game, ESPN, Fox Sports, and the Big Ten Network are all slated to be on Ohio State’s campus Saturday. The atmosphere is expected to be electric, and to add to the excitement, Ohio State’s creative team proved Monday why they are the best in the country with the release of the Buckeyes' alternative jerseys for the game.

Since Meyer has taken over the reins of the Ohio State football program, the Buckeyes have donned multiple jersey alternates in a continuous effort to boost recruiting. Meyer knows the important role recruiting plays in keeping the program at an elite level and has proven it time and time again. This is why recruiting never stops at Ohio State, even leading up to a crucial game.

Update on Anthony Cook

We have covered the recruitment of Anthony Cook (Houston, TX/Lamar) heavily, as he is one of the best prospects still uncommitted to a program. The five-star CB has shown interest in Ohio State for a long time and has the team listed among his top three schools along with LSU and Texas.

We are now less than a week from Cook’s scheduled announcement, and it appears that the elite CB is still unsure of where he will continue his football career. However, given the short amount of time between now and his announcement date next Monday, Oct. 30, he knows he needs to make one soon.

Sam Spiegelman of SEC Country spoke with Cook this past weekend and Cook opened up on his decision and his thoughts on his finalists ahead of his decision. When it came to Ohio State, Cook was impressed.

Cook told Spiegelman that when it comes to developing him as a player, he believes Ohio State would be the best fit. This is obviously an important aspect he will be considering while making his decision. He recognizes Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff’s ability to develop players into first round draft picks, defensive backs in particular. The Buckeyes had two CBs selected in last years NFL Draft class and current Buckeye CB Denzel Ward will look to continue that streak this year.

Cook also told Spiegelman that he is still unsure as to where he will be heading. So it's tough for anyone to predict what school he will choose. But what we do know is that Cook’s recruitment looked to be a two-horse race for the majority of his recruitment, with Ohio State and Texas. And while LSU has certainly closed the gap, it is still widely expected that the school he chooses will either be the Buckeyes or the Longhorns.

In speaking with Spiegelman, Cook said that if he were to pick Texas, it would be because he wants to continue playing football in his home state. Whether or not that is the most important factor in his recruitment remains to be seen, but if it is not, the Buckeyes may have the best chance at landing the elite prospect.

The 6'0, 168-pound CB is seen as the No. 2 CB in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, and is the No. 14 overall player in the class, regardless of position.

Update on Micah Parsons

If you have followed 5-star defensive end Micah Parsons’ (Harrisburg, PA/Harrisburg) recruitment you know that it has been anything but stable. Parsons was at one point a Penn State commit, but after visiting other schools, he decided to re-open his recruitment.

At the time of his de-commitment, it was expected that Ohio State was the favorite. But then his official visit to the school for the Oklahoma game took place and everything changed. Parsons took to Twitter after the Ohio State loss and questioned whether red-shirt QB Dwayne Haskins should be starting over J.T. Barrett and the Buckeyes’ coaching staff was not happy.

While Parsons has since said that he understands it was not his place to speak on Ohio State’s QB situation, he doesn’t regret saying it because it was a learning process. However, it seems that things still haven’t been completely smoothed out.

Adam Friedman of Rivals.com spoke with Parsons recently on where he sits currently in his recruitment. The elite DE prospect talked about where his relationship with the Ohio State coaching staff currently stands and unfortunately, it doesn’t seem reparable.

It appears that Parsons will now be Penn State’s to lose. Ohio State was realistically in the driver's seat before his official visit to Columbus, but if a recruit doesn’t feel comfortable at a particular program, it is best he commits elsewhere.

Ohio State is still looking to add one or two more members to its defensive line in this year’s class and will now be focusing on four-star defensive tackle Tommy Togiai (Pocatello, ID/Highland) and four-star DE Tyreke Smith (Cleveland, OH/Cleveland Heights.) Both are Ohio State leans and Smith is scheduled to announce his decision Jan. 4th at the Under Armour All-American game.

With an “unleashed” theme, you can hear the clanking of metal and what sounds like wolf growls throughout the short 47-second video.

Earlier in the day, the OSU football account on Twitter released photos of what the uniforms would look like for this week’s game.

The trend of breaking out alternate unis isn’t a new thing; since 2009, the Buckeyes have worn new jerseys, helmets, or shoes for at least one game a season. Last season, Ohio State wore alternate uniforms against Nebraska, and broke out matte helmets against Michigan.

Below is video on the recent alternate jerseys/uniforms the Buckeyes have donned.

The Buckeyes will need to clean up a lot of the blunders they had against Maryland.

“How can Ohio State beat Penn State next Saturday in the Big Ten’s Game of the Year? By embracing the rivalry in the wake of Big Ten champion Penn State;s 24-21 upset last year.”

-Bill Livingston, The Plain Dealer

The Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off a bye week that could prove a most-critical factor in its battle against Penn State this weekend in what is widely considered the game of the year for the Big Ten conference.

Last season, the Buckeyes were on the second leg of one of the toughest two-game stretches envisioned in the Big Ten. After defeating eighth-ranked Wisconsin in overtime in Madison, Wisc., Ohio State headed to Happy Valley to face a surging Penn State. The Nittany Lions, meanwhile, had an extra week to prepare—as they were coming off a bye week. This past weekend, the college football world saw what Penn State could accomplish after a bye as the Nittany Lions absolutely routed Michigan by a 42-13 margin. As Penn State did this past weekend, the Buckeyes will need to bring something new to the Horseshoe Saturday to keep their visitors on their toes.

From a functional perspective, Urban Meyer’s squad needs to focus in particular on the special teams disasters that haunted the Buckeyes against Maryland two weeks ago, and which proved to be the difference maker in favor of Penn State in last year’s matchup when the Nittany Lions returned a blocked field goal for what proved to be the winning score. More recently, field goals were both missed AND blocked, punts shanked and kickoffs returned against for touchdowns versus the Terps. The Buckeyes will have a lot of cleanup to do to mitigate these mistakes against a powerful opponent.

In addition, containing Heisman-frontrunner Saquon Barkley--obviously--will be a priority for the Ohio State defense. However, that need is easier said than done, as Michigan tried and failed to keep Barkley’s antics at bay. The Buckeyes will lean on the likes of defensive end Nick Bosa to contain the dual threat of Barkley and quarterback Trace McSorley.

“We really haven’t brought it up too much this year, but it really shows how much something like that--it’s really such a freak play...for them to block it, pick it up and score the touchdown. It doesn’t happen that often.”

-Ohio State kicker Sean Nuernberger, via Tim May, The Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State’s loss last season to Penn State could have proved an absolute disaster--a mark on the season that eliminated the Buckeyes from all hopes of a berth in the College Football Playoff. As it turned out, Ohio State managed to rally and earn a bid to the CFP despite the loss, leaving Penn State with a spot in the Rose Bowl facing USC. Much of that decision, in retrospect, may have hinged on the manner in which Ohio State lost, rather than the way in which the Nittany Lions won. Instead of being blown out from the start, or creating a number of egregious errors on offense and defense, it was a blunder on special teams--what kicker Sean Nuernberger called a “freak play”--that led to the winning score for Penn State. Late in the fourth quarter, cornerback Grant Haley, playing on special teams, returned Tyler Durbin’s blocked field goal attempt 60 yards for a touchdown. Earlier in the game, a blocked punt ultimately led to three more points for the Nittany Lions.

The win was Penn State’s first over the Buckeyes since 2011, and head coach James Franklin’s first over a ranked team. Even more impressive was that, even at that point in the season, Penn State was not recognized for the surging power that it was, and was not even ranked in the AP Poll prior to its matchup with the Buckeyes. And while many blamed quarterback J.T. Barrett for deficiencies in the passing game (which did manifest later in the season and were blatant during the bowl game against Clemson), errors in special teams really were the downfall of the Buckeyes against Penn State.

Unfortunately, those deficiencies seem to have continued into this season, as was evidenced in Ohio State’s still-dominant win over Maryland. While Meyer has worked hard to correct since (special teams play versus Nebraska proved much stronger, excepting a kickoff that went out of bounds and a poor hold on a separate kickoff), the Buckeyes will need to stay tight on special teams against a much stronger foe Saturday to avoid the perils they faced last year.

“Franklin has signed three consecutive top-20 recruiting classes according to 247sports.com. Those classes have given Penn State a Big Ten Championship and have the Nittany Lions undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the country.”

-Tim Bielik, Cleveland.com

There is no doubt that Urban Meyer had built a recruiting empire during his tenure at Ohio State. In fact, the Buckeyes have had a top-10 recruiting class every year Meyer has been head coach, and Ohio State has topped the Big Ten in each instance. Even so, while Jim Harbaugh and Michigan hang around the periphery, James Franklin and Penn State have been quietly rebuilding a formidable set of classes as the Nittany Lions bounce back from NCAA sanctions.

Franklin is entering his fourth season as head coach, and has managed to put together a top-20 class in each of the past three years. While some prospects, like four-star running back Saquon Barkley, have matched and even exceeded expectations, Franklin has also managed to find diamonds in the rough--like three-star quarterback Trace McSorley, who has proven to be one of the best quarterbacks in the Big Ten.

Meyer definitely has the edge when it comes to big name recruits, as the Buckeyes have seven five-star recruits to Penn State’s one (coincidentally, a sophomore running back who has has just 37 career carries backing up Barkley). Even more impressive, all of Meyer’s five-stars are either freshmen or sophomores, and have plenty of time to grow and develop their talents.

Moving down to the four-star recruits, Ohio State dwarfs the Nittany Lions with 55 compared to 33. Nearly all of Ohio State’s starting offense (J.T. Barrett, every lineman, the top-six receivers and top-two running backs) fall into this category. In addition to Barkley, wide receiver Juwan Johnson has also proven to be a strong four-star pan-out for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State has significantly more three-stars than the Buckeyes, and have filled out their roster with players in this category, including McSorley, who has started for the past two seasons.

The team still has question marks, but the fall ball season gave reason for hope for the Buckeyes on the diamond.

After a disappointing 2017 campaign that saw Ohio State baseball stumble to a 22-34 record and miss out on the postseason entirely, and a summer spent with players spread out in leagues around the country, Buckeye head coach Greg Beals couldn’t be sure what he’d get from his team as it returned to campus for fall practice. By all indications, though, he found a team that’s hungry to get back into contention in the Big Ten and put last season’s struggles behind them.

“The first thing would be the attitude of the players this fall,” Beals told Sonny Fulks of Press Pros Magazine. “There’s a sense of urgency that’s been created as a unit. There’s more energy.”

That energy culminated in a spirited set of intrasquad games to conclude the fall ball schedule, the annual Scarlet & Gray World Series. The Scarlet squad emerged victorious, four games to one, and put on an offensive display that would be welcome come next February.

Powered by five of the top six hitters in the series, the side coached by director of baseball operations Blair Everhart accounted for 47 of the 65 runs scored in the five contests, including games of 11, 9, and 17. As a whole, the bats dominated, posting a collective .324/.376/.476 slash line and 26 extra-base hits.

All of which begs a few questions: who were the standouts at the plate? What have we learned about how the lineup may look come the spring? And what does the explosive offensive performance mean for a pitching staff that was much maligned last season?

With just under four months remaining before the Buckeyes take the field in Florida to kick off the 2018 season, some of the answers to those questions have come into sharper relief. Nothing can be set in stone, but we can draw a few conclusions as to the direction Beals is likely to go.

Carrying over

When the dust settled on 2017, the two most dangerous bats in the lineup were not at all the names that were expected at this time last year. Freshmen Dominic Canzone and Connor Pohl were forced to grow up quickly, and the pair responded with dynamic rookie seasons. The news out of fall ball is that they have carried over that success.

Canzone, who was a third-team All-Big Ten choice this past spring after slashing .343/.390/.458, went on to light up the Valley League in Virginia over the summer, hitting .404, garnering an all-star nod, and being named the league’s top prospect by Perfect Game. All the Walsh Jesuit High School product did for the Gray squad in the fall series was go .368/.400/.632 with three extra-base hits, three runs batted in, and three runs scored.

Pohl, who was Canzone’s teammate over the summer with the Front Royal Cardinals, came out of nowhere as a walk-on in the second half of last season, posting eight extra-base hits in just 80 at-bats. Seemingly entrenching himself as the team’s third baseman this fall, Pohl raked at a .400/.455/.450 rate in the series, scoring seven runs and driving in four.

“He’s just that close to ‘dude’ status,” Beals told Fulks. “I mean, he’s a dude already, but if he makes the next progression he’s going to be a serious ‘dude’.”

With a year of experience under their belts, Canzone and Pohl will be counted on even more heavily in 2018, and both could be headed toward all-conference types of careers.

Rebounding and raking

Two players who experienced the opposite of the success of Ohio State’s super freshmen in 2017, used positive summer league experiences as a springboard into the S&G series, and showed flashes of becoming the middle-of-the-order anchors Beals needs.

The first was junior Brady Cherry, a much-lauded recruit out of Pendleton, Indiana who has gone through major ups and downs in his first two years in Columbus. Cherry is transitioning to second base after primarily manning the hot corner, and the move appears to agree with him. Back at his high school position, he belted nine home runs for the Terre Haute Rex of the Prospect League.

“I’m really happy with Brady Cherry,” Beals said. “He has redefined himself.”

Cherry went .381/.409/.952 in the five games, posting series-highs with a 1.361 OPS, three homers, and eight RBIs.

Also looking for redemption was senior Tyler Cowles, who struggled mightily in his first year of Division I play after transferring from the community college ranks. What the Grove City, Ohio native called an “embarrassing” .190 effort at the plate in 39 games became fuel for a summer that saw him hit .295 with 15 doubles, four home runs, and 32 RBIs for Chillicothe in the Prospect League.

In five games for Scarlet, Cowles put up a .429/.455/.714 slash line, with series highs of nine hits and eight runs scored, and added two longballs and five RBIs of his own.

Unfamiliar faces

Canzone’s name can be written in ink as the starting right fielder, and with Cowles making a strong push for the left field job, the lone remaining outfield question facing Beals before February is who will replace center fielder Tre’ Gantt — who departed to the Cleveland Indians organization in June’s Major League Baseball draft. The answer to that comes down to a pair of new faces.

Malik Jones would appear to be the frontrunner to get first crack at the position. A JUCO transfer from Weatherford Community College in Richardson, Texas, Jones was on base seven times in the series and his speed was evident. He stole three bases in three attempts, tops among all players, and played flawless defense.

Also in the equation is freshman Jake Ruby. A two-sport star from Bishop Hartley High School in Groveport, Ohio, Ruby slashed .294/.333/.353 in his first taste of collegiate action, and may be the fastest player on the roster.

Another position up the middle of the defense with big shoes to fill is that of shortstop, where two-time team co-captain Jalen Washington patrolled in 2017. Another duo of fresh faces is vying for the spot in JUCO transfer Kobie Foppe and redshirt sophomore Matt Carpenter. Foppe, called “a steady defender” by Baseball America, comes from South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, and set the turf on fire at Nick Swisher Field, going 8-for-17 with a double and a triple during the S&G Series, and made every play in the field.

Carpenter actually appeared in 15 games last season as a redshirt freshman, making two starts, but went 0-for-13 at the plate. A favorite of Beals because of his work ethic, though, the former Aurora High School standout posted a healthy .412/.444/.412 line this fall.

“He goes out there and earns it every day,” the Ohio State skipper said of Carpenter. “He’s really had a good fall for us.”

Rounding it out

With the outfield and three-fourths of the infield coming into focus, a number of familiar names will also be called upon to make contributions in both starting roles and off the bench. Junior Jacob Barnwell will be back behind the plate, where he is one of the more advanced pitch receivers in the conference. Barnwell will be joined by highly-touted freshman Dillon Dingler who has impressed since setting foot on campus.

At first base, senior Bo Coolen would appear to be the opening day starter. After a disappointing .230/.345/.304 effort last season, his first at the Division I level, he will need to do more to hold onto that spot. A 4-for-15 performance with four runs batted in during the S&G Series may not be enough to do so. Any number of others, including senior Noah McGowan and junior Andrew Fishel, could be called upon if Coolen falters, and both should see at-bats as designated hitter.

Arm problems

So, the offense looked good over the course of the past six weeks, surely a positive for a club that finished third from the bottom in runs scored in the Big Ten in 2017. The flip side, though, is that the pitching staff took a beating in these games. A unit plagued by inconsistency a season ago could once again be a source of indigestion for the Buckeyes.

At the outset of fall ball, four returning pitchers seemed the most likely candidates for the weekend rotation come springtime in fifth-year seniors Adam Niemeyer and Yianni Pavlopoulos and juniors Ryan Feltner and Connor Curlis. Pavlopoulos (10.29 earned run average in seven innings pitched) and Feltner (9.64 ERA in 4.2 IP) did little to help their causes.

Feltner’s case is particularly baffling. Capable of hitting the upper 90s on the radar gun and fresh off an all-star turn in the prestigious Cape Cod League in which he did not allow an earned run, the Hudson, Ohio native simply has not been able to harness his command. A top pro prospect in the Big Ten, Feltner has posted a 5.14 ERA in 131.1 innings as a Buckeye, and could find himself in a relief role without improvement.

“We really wanted to see Ryan Feltner come in and pitch with the success he had in the Cape Cod League over the summer,” Beals said.

While Feltner and Pavlopoulos were getting knocked around, Niemeyer and Curlis equipped themselves relatively well. Niemeyer, a co-captain last season, gave up three runs in his eight innings, holding batters to just a .207 batting average. Curlis basically matched that, allowing three runs in 8.2 innings of work, and striking out a series-high 14. Both should find themselves in the weekend rotation when the season gets underway.

“Connor Curlis came out of a good summer and was even better with what he showed us here in the fall,” the head coach said. “He was outstanding.”

The wild card for the starting staff is freshman Seth Lonsway, who passed on a signing bonus in excess of $400,000 from the Cincinnati Reds to play collegiately. The left-hander, and top recruit in the state of Ohio, dazzled in his six innings on the mound during the S&G Series, allowing just a run on four hits, striking out 10, and routinely sitting 94 mph with his fastball. Lonsway having the talent to be a weekend starter as a freshman is not in dispute, but an eligibility issue pertaining to his high school transcript could keep him off the field.

“He’s obviously blessed with a great arm and no one’s worked harder than he has here in the fall,” Beals said of his young hurler. “The issue with his eligibility is a matter that’s squarely in the hands of the NCAA. We’re cautiously optimistic over the appeal, but when you’re dealing with the NCAA you never take anything for granted.”

As was seen last season, the Buckeyes will be as successful as their pitching staff allows them to be. Right now, the starters leave some doubts as to how successful that can be.

Old faithful

Where the starting rotation is an unknown, the bullpen should once again be a strength for Beals, who knows exactly the arm he can turn to in just about any situation.

“What I don’t worry about is our bullpen situation, starting with ‘Mr. Do-Everything’, Seth Kinker,” he said.

Kinker, now a senior, has appeared in 79 games through his first three seasons with the program, and he has done so in every role imaginable. The Huntington, West Virginia product has been a spot starter, a long man, a setup man, and a closer, and one assumes he will wear many hats once again in 2018.

Kinker is not the only experienced arm in the pen, either, anchored by fifth-year senior Kyle Michalik. The duo combined to allow just two runs in 9.1 innings of relief during the fall series.

“A lot of those guys out there have pitched important innings before in the Big Ten Tournament two years ago, and I’m really eager to mix and match things come spring, because I think they’re going to be a strength of our team,” Beals said.

Fifth-year Austin Woodby, senior Reece Calvert, redshirt junior Thomas Waning, and sophomore Andrew Magno have all seen time out of the bullpen as well, and each made multiple appearances during the five games. So too did a trio of freshmen southpaws in Griffan Smith, Alex Theis, and Jonathan Jahn, all of whom will be looking to prove themselves capable of getting hitters out at the college level.

Should the starters experience the same kind of struggles as a season ago, the Buckeyes can breathe just a little easier knowing that the bullpen has been through it before.

Wrapping up

February 16th is still a long way off. Much can happen, both positive and negative, over the course of nearly four months. But this much is apparent: Ohio State seems poised to put the travails of 2017 behind it, and thanks to a wave of young talent, could bounce right back into contention in the Big Ten.

“I believe this team has the ability to earn an at-large bid,” Beals said when the Buckeyes unveiled next season’s schedule. “We are excited to continue our development throughout the fall and winter. We will be ready to compete and make a championship run in 2018.”

Whether that is wishful thinking or not, Ohio State should be improved over last season. If players like Canzone, Pohl, and Cherry continue to develop, if the starting pitching can hold up to even a slightly-better-than-average standard, and if faces old and new can mesh to form a team identity, a return to the postseason isn’t out of the question.

That’s a lot of “Ifs.” And as fans of the Buckeye Nine have witnessed before, sometimes those “Ifs” become “Don’ts.” For now, though, all we have is the long, cold winter to wonder what the spring will have to offer.

The Nittany Lions boast the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense. But, they’ve done that by beating up on some pretty bad offenses.

We fear them. We all do. How could you not? Their leading rusher, Glenn Smith, is averaging 2.79 yards per carry and nearly 31 yards on the ground per game. Their quarterback, Conner Manning, has lit the world on fire with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. This is, of course, the dynamic duo powering Georgia State — a unit ranked No. 83 in the country in total offense.

Georgia State is the second best offense Penn State has faced all season.

Make no mistake, Penn State’s defense is really good — you have to be to rank No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense. But it’s also true that Ohio State will be the best offense that Penn State's faced this year... by far. The Buckeyes rank No. 3 in the country in total offense (and is top-20 in near every major statistical offensive category: No. 18 in rushing, No. 12 in passing, No. 4 in passing efficiency, No. 2 in scoring). So who is the best offense Penn State has played so far? It was the Northwestern Wildcats — a team that ranks a ho-hum No. 74 in total offense.

PSU Opponent – Total Offense Rank
Akron – 116
Pittsburgh – 92
Georgia St. – 83
Iowa – 103
Indiana – 94
Northwestern – 74
Michigan – 97
Ohio State – 3

So, while the Nittany Lions have a lot of weapons on offense, and a defense that has claimed two shut-outs this season, they still have some questions to answer against top-tier talent — like Ohio State. Plus, the Buckeyes didn’t exactly do too well the last time they were tested by a ranked opponent at home.

Penn State was able to stop Michigan and John O’Korn last Saturday, but does that say a whole lot? Not really.
