The Nittany Lions boast the nation’s No. 1 scoring defense. But, they’ve done that by beating up on some pretty bad offenses.

We fear them. We all do. How could you not? Their leading rusher, Glenn Smith, is averaging 2.79 yards per carry and nearly 31 yards on the ground per game. Their quarterback, Conner Manning, has lit the world on fire with seven touchdowns and five interceptions. This is, of course, the dynamic duo powering Georgia State — a unit ranked No. 83 in the country in total offense.

Georgia State is the second best offense Penn State has faced all season.

Make no mistake, Penn State’s defense is really good — you have to be to rank No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense. But it’s also true that Ohio State will be the best offense that Penn State's faced this year... by far. The Buckeyes rank No. 3 in the country in total offense (and is top-20 in near every major statistical offensive category: No. 18 in rushing, No. 12 in passing, No. 4 in passing efficiency, No. 2 in scoring). So who is the best offense Penn State has played so far? It was the Northwestern Wildcats — a team that ranks a ho-hum No. 74 in total offense.

PSU Opponent – Total Offense Rank
Akron – 116
Pittsburgh – 92
Georgia St. – 83
Iowa – 103
Indiana – 94
Northwestern – 74
Michigan – 97
Ohio State – 3

So, while the Nittany Lions have a lot of weapons on offense, and a defense that has claimed two shut-outs this season, they still have some questions to answer against top-tier talent — like Ohio State. Plus, the Buckeyes didn’t exactly do too well the last time they were tested by a ranked opponent at home.

Penn State was able to stop Michigan and John O’Korn last Saturday, but does that say a whole lot? Not really.

Meyer says players and coaches are practicing as well as they have in years.

Coming off of a much needed open week, the No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes are currently preparing for their toughest test of the season as the No. 2 Penn State Nittany Lions visit The Horseshoe this Saturday.

More than a week removed from their 56-14 victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Buckeye head coach has his sights set on PSU, who delivered Ohio State’s only regular season loss of the 2016 season.

Penn State Preview

  • The head coach also said that he takes comfort in the fact that quarterback J.T. Barrett is practicing as well as he has been.
  • He added that the reason that the team is playing so well recently, is that the team, and the coaches are practicing as well as they have in several years.
  • He also added that PSU running back Saquon Barkley is possibly the best all-purpose back that he has ever faced as a collegiate head coach.
  • Meyer says that Barrett has been extremely consistent other than in the loss to the Oklahoma Sooners, and the protection and wide receivers have been better, but he also notes that Penn State might have the best pass defense in the country.
  • The head coach said that any time you start considering the week off an advantage, “you don’t play well.”
  • Meyer said that he hasn’t decided how much the revenge factor will play into his coaching this week. He said that he will wait and listen to the team to determine what factors need to be focused on.
  • He also added that PSU’s defensive lineman/linebacker Jason Cabinda stands out when watching the Nittany Lions on film.
  • Meyer said that PSU’s offense is a very good scheme with very good players, making them one of the best units in the country.
Injury Report

  • Meyer said that while Demario McCall is available to play, but he likely won’t be 100%.
  • He also added that Mike Weber is good-to-go after injuring his wrist against Nebraska. He will wear a brace, but it shouldn’t impact him.
  • Also suffering injuries against the Huskers, but should be fine for Saturday are Jamarco Jones, Jalyn Holmes, and Parris Campbell.
Depth Chart

  • Demetrius Knox is still considered the starting right guard, but everything is day-to-day, and this week will be “a hell of a challenge.”

No. 6 Ohio State will play host to ESPN’s “College Gameday” for the second time this season, ahead of their 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff against the second-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. The game will be broadcast on FOX.

Lots of Buckeye news out of the NFL this week, including Malik Hooker out for the rest of the season.

We’re one week closer to the halfway point of the 2017 NFL season, and former Buckeyes continue to impress. As some players bounce between the practice squad and active rosters, others are marking their territory among the league’s elite. Three OSU alumni had career-high games in Week 7, Joey Bosa had two sacks (for 18 in 19 games), and a Buckeye rookie is exceeding expectations.

Zeke vs. El Guapo

Two of Ohio State’s recent legendary rushers faced off on Sunday, as Carlos Hyde and the San Francisco 49ers met up with Ezekiel Elliott and the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys blew away the Niners in a 40-10 finish, with Zeke carrying a load with three touchdowns.

Not only did Elliott finish the day with 147 yards on 26 carries with two scores, he also recorded a 72-yard receiving touchdown to round out his day.

The elder (heh) Buckeye, Carlos Hyde, has been battling hip issues the past few weeks and didn’t quite have the same production in Week 7 that he’s had early on this season. Hyde finished the day with 14 carries for 68 yards with another 20 yards on four catches, but no trips to the endzone.

Lattimore for Defensive Rookie of the Year?

After battling some injuries early in the season, rookie CB Marshon Lattimore has five games under his belt and is only getting better. In addition to his 24 total tackles (19 solo) and five pass breakups, he’s also recorded a forced fumble and his first career Pick-6 just a week ago. This week against the Packers was no different. Lattimore allowed zero receptions and forced Green Bay’s backup quarterback Brett Hundley to try to exploit other coverage options.

Buckeyes have career-high games

Several Ohio State alumni bested their former career-high stats on Sunday, including linebackers Darron Lee and Curtis Grant, and running back Rod Smith.

Darron Lee had a big game for the Jets in Week 7, tying his career-high of 11 total tackles, and also snagging his first game with at least nine solo tackles — he also forced a fumble in Sunday’s contest.

Similarly, LB Curtis Grant saw the most playing time of his professional career this week. After spending last year on the practice squad -- and bouncing from team to team — Grant was called up to the New York Giants’ active roster and finally had a breakout game with six total tackles (four solo).

One Buckeye who is often overshadowed is RB Rod Smith, who sits in the wings behind phenom Ezekiel Elliott. Smith has spent the past three seasons with the Cowboys, but finally started making his mark in 2017. He came up with a big first-down a few weeks back, and followed it up with an overall career-high day against the Niners, claiming eight rushes for 64 yards — one 45 yard breakaway — with another five yards on a catch.

Honorable mention: Ted Ginn Jr. recorded 141 receiving yards on Sunday, the second most in his career — the Buckeye’s career-high is from 2008, when he had 175 receiving yards in just his second-year in the league.

Plays of the Week

Joey Bosa (x2)

He missed four games to start his rookie season, but has gone on to claim 18 sacks in just 19 games. So far in 2017, Bosa has recorded 34 total tackles, 7.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. It’s scary and impressive to think he’s only halfway through his second year in the league. (Quarterbacks, beware.)

Winning Defensive Rookie of the Year last season wasn’t enough for the Buckeye, who has gone on to form one of the best pass-rushing duos in the entire NFL (alongside Melvin Ingram). Bosa’s coaches have continued to sing his praises, and with a seemingly impressive work ethic, shouldn’t have to worry about a drop off in production over the next few seasons.

Other Notes

  • Monday Night Football this week features Philadelphia (Malcolm Jenkins) and Washington (Terrelle Pryor Sr.) in a matchup that will certainly see the two Buckeyes coming face-to-face throughout the primetime event.
  • Second-year wide receiver Jalin Marshall has had a bit of a rocky road this season. He started the year serving a four-game suspension, and then spent over a week inactive for the Jets before they ultimately cut him in Week 6. Now, the team decided to re-sign Marshall to their practice squad, where he’ll probably stay until the end of the season.
Injuries and Inactives

  • Bad news for standout safety, Malik Hooker, who tore his ACL and MCL on Sunday, knocking him out for the remainder of his rookie season.
  • Panthers S Kurt Coleman is still out with a lingering ACL injury.
  • Rookie Gareon Conley missed out on another game this season with a lingering shin injury. Despite having only played in two games his first year in the NFL, Conley is still looking to be the future of the Raiders secondary.
  • As in weeks past, QB Cardale Jones was once again a healthy scratch for the Chargers, as he sits far back in the depth chart.
Bye Week

Teriyon “Mookie” Cooper breaks down his recent offer from the Buckeyes.

Urban Meyer and his rockstar group of assistant coaches have been working hard trying to secure pledges from 2018 and 2019 prospects, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t keeping an eye out for 2020 talent.

After sending out numerous scholarship offers to top sophomore standouts, one of the recent recruits to earn a chance to rock the Scarlet and Gray was class of 2020 athlete Teriyon “Mookie” Cooper.

Blessed to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University #GoBuckeyes pic.twitter.com/1wpWQzilFL

— Mookie Cooper (@moooksterr1) October 20, 2017

“I found out about the offer when I got a call from my coach and he told me the news. Coach Smith was the one to give out the offer to me as an athlete,” the 5’9, 180-pound jack-of-all-trades told Land-Grant Holy Land.

Coming up big time on the ground, through the air, and on special teams time and time again for Trinity Catholic (MO), Cooper impressed the Buckeye staff with everything he's shown on the field.

“They [Ohio State] loved my speed and ability to play in space,” Cooper said.

With more than two years of the recruiting process left for Cooper, the Buckeyes join the likes of Illinois, Kansas State, Kentucky, Missouri, and Texas in the pursuit for the talented speedster.

See what caught the Buckeyes' eye with these highlights of Mookie Cooper in action:

2020 PG visits Ohio State

The future of the Ohio State basketball program is definitely on the rise. Fans aren’t the only ones taking notice of what Chris Holtmann and the Buckeyes are starting to put together. So are many prospects.

After the coaches recently checked in on Butler Area (PA) class of 2020 point guard Ethan Morton, the four-star prospect returned the favor and made a trip to Columbus on Sunday to get more familiar with the Ohio State coaching staff and program, according to Corey Evans of Rivals.

2020 Rvals50 Butler High guard Ethan Morton is on an unofficial visit to Ohio State today @Kevin_Noon

— Corey Evans (@coreyevans_10) October 22, 2017

Morton, who stands 6’1 and weighs 175 pounds, might only be a sophomore, but he's picking up offers and interest from a number of college programs. While OSU has yet to dish the guard a scholarship, Penn State, West Virginia, UAB, and Miami (OH) are among the schools that have.

As a freshman at Butler Area, a basketball powerhouse in the state of Pennsylvania, Morton averaged 14 points a contest for the state championship contenders.

Quick Hits

  • On a bye this weekend, the Ohio State coaches hit the recruiting trail to check out some of their key targets. One recruit the Buckeyes went and watched in action was class of 2018 offensive tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere, per Jake Perper. One of the top uncommitted linemen in the country, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Florida, and Alabama are just a few of the programs after the Berkeley Prep (FL) senior.
  • Ohio State basketball target Elijah Weaver will announce his college plans later today. A four-star rated 2018 point guard from Oldsmar Christian School (FL), Weaver, who was once thought to be an OSU lean, will more than likely end up committing to the Trojans of USC.

The Buckeyes had a bye week, but they kept their spot among the top of the rankings.

There wasn’t too much movement among the top of the latest rankings, with Alabama, Penn State, TCU and Wisconsin all winning in stunning fashion, and Georgia having a bye week in Week 8. The top five teams are all undefeated, with Ohio State keeping the top spot among teams with one loss. Coming off the bye week, the Buckeyes are sitting pretty at No. 6.

The big news around the Big Ten was the impressive “white-out” victory of Penn State over Michigan. Just a year after taking a 49-10 loss, James Franklin and team finally got their revenge with an extremely outmatched 42-13 win on Saturday. The Wolverines still boast one of the country’s most dominant defenses, but with Nittany Lion QB Trace McSorley becoming just as productive as Saquon Barkley, Penn State has a few too many offensive weapons to contain.

Elsewhere, Oklahoma was thiiiiis close to losing on the road to Kansas State before getting into the endzone with 10 seconds left on the clock. Oklahoma State also had a narrow victory over Texas, that actually went to overtime and collectively broke the hearts of Longhorn fans everywhere. Notre Dame, on the other hand, absolutely demolished USC 49-14, leaving some to questions whether the Trojans QB Sam Darnold would be better off waiting until 2019 to take his talents to the NFL.

There were several other big shake-ups in this weeks Coaches and AP Polls, below.
