The Buckeyes trimmed the three goal lead to one, but couldn’t tie it up

If I told you going into this weekend that the Ohio State hockey team would split at No. 12 Wisconsin, you probably would’ve taken it and ran. But boy does it not feel good when you fall down three goals and the game feels out of reach halfway through the second.

The No. 19 Buckeyes made it close, scoring two in the third to make it a one goal game, but Wisconsin slammed the door against OSU and the extra attacker, to earn the split in the weekend series in Madison, Wisc., to open the year.

Ohio State was run over possession wise in the first, generating a paltry three shots on goal, while UW registered nine and scored the only goal of the frame. Will Johnson scored with Seamus Malone and Kevin Miller off for penalties, making it four on four. UW somehow got a 3-on-1 in the situation and Johnson put home the rebound. Not ideal!

The Badgers were contained from there until the nine minute mark of the second, when they’d score their second and third goals of the game within 1:43. Turnovers and poor clearing attempts allowed UW the chances they’d need as Cameron Baker and Tarek Baker scored their second and third goals, respectively.

OSU did outshoot the Badgers in the second, 8-7, but couldn’t find a way to put any of their opportunities home. Sean Romeo couldn’t keep the Buckeyes within a manageable distance despite only facing 16 shots against through two—and that’d sure matter once Ohio State came roaring back in the third.

Two goals within 24 seconds is a pretty unique occurrence, and Freddy Gerard and John Wiitala did that at 11:15 and 11:39 of the third. Mason Jobst had the secondary assist on both while Matt Joyaux had the primary on Gerard’s first of the year and Gerard had the primary on Wiitala’s second. Gerard now has four points through two games this year. Playing with Mason Jobst must own.

But that’d be all that OSU would get. Romeo would be pulled for the extra attacked but the Bucks couldn’t get that last one in.

Only seven shots were registered by the Buckeyes in the third, and they were actually outshot despite being down three coming into the period. (That’s not acceptable, but at least they made it close so consider this just me complaining.) If they keep getting outshot in those situations, it may be a problem, but it’s hard to complain here when they got so close.

All in all, a split at the No. 12 team in the country, who happens to be a conference rival, is nothing to scoff at. You just wish Ohio State would’ve come out and put on a better show in the first period Saturday night.

But either way, it’s a positive outcome and the Buckeyes will look to keep the momentum going when they host RPI in Columbus, Ohio for the home opening series next weekend.

Also, what the H-E-double hockey sticks happened on special teams?

Over the past month of games, the No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes have outscored their opponents 210 to 42 for an average of 52.5 to 10.5 per game. With blowouts like these, it is sometimes difficult to find anything of substance to glean from the wins, especially when the starters play sparingly in the second half.

With that in mind, Saturday’s game against the Maryland Terrapins seemed to provide a more definitive glimpse at the impact of Ohio State’s new offensive coaches, Kevin Wilson and Ryan Day, on quarterback J.T. Barrett and the Buckeye offense.

However, there are still questions about what the OSU coaching staff will do following a disappointing injury, and what the heck was up with the special teams.

1. J.T. Barrett has dramatically improved as a passer following the debacle against Oklahoma

In the four games since the Buckeyes were embarrassed at The ‘Shoe by the No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners, Barrett and the offense have morphed into something that resembles the unit that many Buckeye fans anticipated to start the season.

However, when playing Army, UNLV and Rutgers, it is difficult to pinpoint just how much of their success was due to tangible improvement, and how much was due to subpar opponents.

However, against Maryland, at least a top-60 team, the improved performance from Barrett was much clearer to see. It wasn’t that he feasted on lesser talent (although that did happen), it was how he feasted; with unexpected arm strength, impressive anticipation, patience in the pocket, and touch when needed.

On the first drive of the game, Barrett was able to thread the needle to find Johnnie Dixon for a big gain. On the play, you can see the Maryland DB jump the route, anticipating an interception. However, Barrett put so much zip on the ball (not something that this QB is known for), that he was able to sneak the ball through for a 35-yard gain.

In addition to his increasing arm strength, Barrett also seems to be improving on his ability to put the ball in the optimum place for his receivers (and only his receivers) to come down with the ball. Later in the first quarter, Barrett fired a dart into the back of the endzone, high and in front of Binjimen Victor, where no Terp defender had a chance to get in the way.

The fifth-year senior also showed a few glimpses of the back-shoulder throw that was a big part of the Ohio State offense in the 2014 National Championship run. Since then, Barrett, as well as Cardale Jones, never seemed to have the confidence in the wide receivers to go back to it. It seems like Dixon, Victor, Austin Mack, Parris Campbell, et al. might be finally earning that trust.

Also of note, Barrett has thrown only a single interception on the season, against OU (he typed knocking on wood). Finally, Barrett’s patience in the pocket was markedly different against Maryland than it has been over the last two seasons. In the past, if his first (or maybe second if we were lucky) receiver wasn’t open, he would look to run.

Now, Barrett did look impressive running against the Terps, picking up 59 yards on eight carries and a touchdown, but he also showed an uncanny willingness to let routes develop and receivers get open.

In addition to the reemergence of the back-shoulder throws, we also saw the new coaching staff open up the playbook to include multiple types of screen passes, multiple wheel routes, and even a reverse against Maryland.

If Wilson and Day are able to discover the plays that can accentuate what this group of skill players does best, the sky’s the limit for the offense in the second half of the season.

Now, I do not think that this means that Barrett is now the front-runner for the Heisman Trophy, or that he has any legitimate chance at an NFL career, but if he can hang on to these improved fundamentals as the back half of the season gets more difficult, it will go a long way to allowing OSU to get back into the Big Ten and National Championship pictures.

2. Kevin Wilson and Greg Studrawa are going to have to rebuild the offensive line

As this past fall camp wound down, the world learned that red-shirt sophomore Branden Bowen had been named a surprise starter on Ohio State’s offensive line from an unusual source.

Proud Mom! Just received the call that Branden will be starting as the right guard for The Ohio State!! So proud of your hard word! #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/r2ojNV5oR6

— Natalie Bowen (@NatalieOSUmom) August 26, 2017

In the first five-plus games of the season, OSU’s right guard has been a steady part of the offensive line. However, with the news that he has a fractured fibula and tibia, and that he is out for the season, that raises questions as to whether or not the O-line can hold up with a new configuration.

Junior Isaiah Prince has had a rough go of it at right tackle so far this season, and sophomore Michael Jordan has been up and down. Despite the offensive line issues, coming into the Maryland game, the Buckeyes led the Big Ten in rushing yards with 238.8 yards per game, and Bowen was a big part of that. If they are going to be able to continue that success in the ground game, and to give Barrett the time he needs in the pocket, the unit will need to be solid come Oct. 28 when the No. 4 Penn State Nittany Lions come to town.

So, does that mean that center Billy Price moves back to guard, the position he’s played until this year? In that case, backup center Brady Taylor could move into the starting lineup.

Sophomore Matthew Burrell came into the game in Bowen’s stead at guard against Maryland, and Meyer seemed to give him the leg up for next week’s game against the Huskers. Postgame, the head coach said, “Next man up right now looks like Matt Burrell.”

However, that “right now” seems to leave open the door for changes in the future. With a game against Nebraska next week, and an open date before PSU, the coaching staff has the time and flexibility to figure out the best grouping for the rest of the season, and no matter how good Barrett looks, or how many stud running backs OSU has, it won’t matter if the offensive line can’t keep opposing defenses out of the backfield.

3. The special teams had a bad day really bad day tremendously, embarrassingly bad day, but it is likely an anomaly

Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat this: that was one of, if not, the worst special teams performance that I have seen in my three decades of substantive Ohio State fandom. Between awful kickoff coverage (including Ty Johnson’s 100-yard return TD), kicking the ball out of bounds, allowing a field goal to be blocked, a straight-up missed FG, a botched extra point, and a shanked punt, I’m not sure how special teams coordinator Kerry Coombs’ was able to keep his cool on the sideline on Saturday afternoon.

However, let’s put this in context. That was literally the perfect storm of special teams suckatude, and there is next to no chance that anything will even approach that performance again this season, or perhaps our lifetimes.

If you look at the first five games of the season, many of the specialty units that dropped a massive doodoo burger on Saturday have been some of the best in the Big Ten.

Before the Maryland game, Sean Nuernberger was perfect on the season on both field goals (7-for-7) and extra points (26-for-26). OSU had held opponents to just 15.67 yards per kickoff return, second only to Northwestern’s 15.55 in the conference.

While the much ballyhooed freshman Drue Chrisman is not yet lived up to the Aussie legend that is Cameron Johnston, his 43.39 yards per punt was respectable, and good enough for sixth in the conference coming into Saturday. It also bears remembering that this stat is often prejudiced by Ohio State’s stellar defense giving the offense a short field to work with, and not much room to punt into.

And not for nothing, the Buckeyes ranked first in the conference with 32.89 yards per kickoff return. So, despite the cavalcade of craptasticness against Maryland, there is no reason to expect anything approaching that again this season.

That being typed, I can also guarantee that all of the special teams units are in for one of the most soul-sucking film sessions and hardest weeks of practice they have ever been forced to endure.

First Half

Maryland won the toss at the beginning of the game and they deferred to give the Buckeyes the opening possession of the game. J.T. Barrett took the Buckeyes 70 yards on just 9 plays on 4 for 5 attempts before running it in from the 2-yard line to put the Buckeyes up 7-0.

On the first Maryland possession, it only lasted 3 plays and 1:31 minutes long. The Buckeye defense pressured Bortenschlager and Nick Bosa blew by the Terps linemen for a strip sack that led to the Buckeyes first defensive touchdown of the season courtesy of Jerome Baker.

The Special Teams play, Urban Meyer’s baby constantly hurts the Buckeyes. Ty Johnson swung the momentum in their favor as he took it to the house from 100 yards out to cut the Buckeye lead in half.

Barrett gets the Buckeyes back on track as he completes a swing pass to Mike Weber that ended at the Maryland 12-yard line before hitting Binjimen Victor on a skinny post in traffic for another touchdown, but unfortunately, due to a fumbled snap on the extra point attempt, the Buckeyes couldn’t extend the lead much more. The Buckeyes still lead 20-7.

Ohio State was the victim of the much-hated targeting penalty that earned Denzel Ward a trip to the Buckeyes locker room. Appearing much worse than it was, Ward appeared to be well within the target zone, but to no avail. A missed opportunity and a bad call that cost the Buckeyes another turnover and a starter on defense, but they have more talent waiting in the wings for their opportunity to show their worth.

Another starter, this time starting RG Brandon Bowen suffered a lower leg injury during an offensive play, which seemed to kill the momentum and the rhythm. It had ill effects on the Buckeyes as it resulted in another Special Teams gaffe as Munford and Pridgeon let a defender through for the block.

Once again, the Buckeyes stand up and defend their home turf as they turn away the Maryland offense once again, this time it was on a 4th and 5 attempt. On the next Buckeye possession, J.K. Dobbins uncharacteristically coughed the ball up as Chandler Burkett rocked him on his rushing attempt. Like clockwork, Ohio States defense does their job once again to force another punt.

The momentum not in the Buckeyes favor as they are forced to punt for the first time, but Chrisman shanked it inside of their 50 yard line to give Maryland possession in Buckeye territory, but Big Play Baker showed up to the party and sacked Bortenschlager on 4th down to stop the Terps offense

J.T. Barrett drove the ball down the field with his stable of running backs before finding Marcus Baugh tip-toeing on the sideline for a 10-yard touchdown to put the Buckeyes up 27-7.

The Buckeyes with some trickery after forcing another Maryland punt as they hand the ball off to Dobbins before he did the same for Campbell as he took it for 24-yards on the reverse to extend the Buckeye lead to 34-7., for a 24 rushing score to extend the Buckeyes lead to 34-7.

The Buckeye defense stiffened up and gave Barrett the ball on the 50-yard line. Hill actually returned it for a touchdown but a block in the back by Riep cost them. Barrett drove 50 yards to add another score when he found Austin Mack with 10 seconds left to extend the halftime lead to 41-7.

The defense has been the star of the game so far and going into halftime, the smothering defense held the Terps to 26 total yards, which is so far, a good sign for this team looking ahead.

Second Half

The second half picked up where the first left off as Ohio State started with a kickoff out of bounds, another Special Teams penalty. In obvious distress over the error, Urban looks to the ground in disbelief. Tyquan Lewis shuts down Bortenschlager as he sacks him on 3rd and long, which is their fourth sack of the day.

Barrett takes the opening second-half possession and takes the first play 35 yards to the Maryland 22 yard line, but Nuerenberger missed the easy field goal for another miss on Special Teams.

The Maryland offense couldn’t muster up any points as they forfeit the ball on another punt. Barrett and Weber punished the Terps on an 11 play drive that went for 65 yards before Weber punched in his fourth touchdown of the season.11 plays 65 yard drive that resulted in another Buckeye touchdown.

Maryland seemed to be clicking but Chase Young got the strip sack on Bortenschalger, then Cornell recovered the ball. Dobbins took the first touch for 14-yards to the Maryland 13 before juking a Terp before punching it in for more Buckeye points–Buckeyes lead 55-7.

Another Buckeyes was ejected by another targeting penalty, so next week at Nebraska Damon Arnette will be out for the first half of the game.

Maryland back-up running back Leake punched it in on 4th and short to cut into the insurmountable lead, but the Buckeyes still lead 62-14. The game ends with the same result, but there are still a few improvements that need to be made.

Next week they visit Nebraska which will be another opportunity to show how much they have grown. With Arnette being unavailable in the first half, the players after him need to be ready, and Special Teams needs to be on point. Enjoy the win, Go Bucks!

OSU’s offense and defense were near perfect. Special teams? Not so much.

The No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0) wrapped up the first half of their 2017 season with a dominating 62-14 victory in The Horseshoe over the Maryland Terrapins (3-2, 1-1) on a celebratory Homecoming Weekend. Two of the three OSU units were near perfect, while the third will likely draw the ire of head coach Urban Meyer throughout the upcoming week.

In Meyer’s 200th game as a collegiate head coach, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett put on a clinic, and should have finally quieted the doubters as he showed impressive arm strength, touch, patience and anticipation, as the Buckeyes’ first team defense held the Terps to 26 total yards in the first half. Unfortunately, OSU’s special teams had what might have been their worst day in the Meyer era.

On the day, OSU out-gained Maryland by 518 yards (584 to 66), and held the Terp passing game to just 16 yards. The Silver Bullets also recorded 12 tackles for loss and five sacks, including a pair of strip-sacks.

The first drive was an example of Buckeye dominance as Barrett led the offense 70 yards down the field in nine plays. The QB kept the ball on a designed run from the two to get the Buckeyes on the board, 7-0.

Other than the touchdown run, the highlight of the opening drive was a laser of a throw from Barrett to wide receiver Johnnie Dixon. As the QB released the ball, it looked like the pass was destined to be a pick-six for Maryland’s safety, but the ball came out hotter than anticipated and snuck past the crossing DB and into Dixon’s waiting hands, and the speedy junior turned upfield to pick up 35 and get OSU inside Maryland’s 10-yard line.

The pass was an early example of the fact that the tentative Barrett that Buckeye fans have begrudgingly gotten used to over the last two seasons might finally have been coached out of him.

On Maryland’s very first play from scrimmage, linebacker Dante Booker got the day’s first sack as Maryland attempted a flea-flicker. However, the coverage downfield and the immediate pressure barely gave Terp quarterback Max Bortenschlager enough time to get the ball back.

Two plays later, defensive end Nick Bosa came around the outside, practically untouched, and picked up the strip-sack on Bortenschlager. As the ball trickled towards the sideline, linebacker Jerome Baker scooped it up and raced into the endzone to put the Buckeyes up 14-0.

In recent weeks, Meyer has been praising his team’s kickoff coverage, however, early in the game, the Terps were able to take advantage of miscues. On the first Ohio State kickoff, Maryland advanced the ball to OSU’s 35, before the Baker scoop-and-score. On the subsequent kick, Maryland running back Ty Johnson caught the ball at the goal line in the middle of the field, and out-raced the Buckeye coverage unit to the left side of the field and scampered all 100 yards into the endzone to move the score to 14-7.

On the Buckeyes’ second offensive possession, Mike Weber was in at running back, and on his second play, Barrett hit the sophomore on a wheel route to the right for a 53-yard gain. Three plays later, Barrett again rifled the ball to a wide receiver who made a great play on the ball.

With a defender draped on him, Binjimen Victor got his feet down in the back of the endzone to put the Buckeyes up 20-7. However on the point after attempt, the snap was mishandled, and OSU’s special teams problems continued.

On the next drive, Bortenschlager attempted a pass to Taivon Jacobs. It appeared that he had caught the ball and turned upfield only to be met by Ohio State’s best cornerback, Denzel Ward. Despite the fact that replay seemed to show Ward hitting Jacobs in the chest with his shoulder, and there helmets touching after the fact, the future first-rounder was ejected for targeting. The disqualification opened up more playing time for sophomore Kendall Sheffield and true-freshman Jeffrey Okudah.

Following a Maryland punt, the Buckeyes were driving, but offensive guard Brandon Bowen was injured and had to be carted off of the field. Bowen was taken to OSU Medical Center where it was determined that he had fractures in both his left tibia and fibula.

The drive ended with a 47-yard field goal attempt, but freshman Thayer Munford was beat on the inside as Maryland’s Chandler Burkett blocked the kick to keep the Buckeye lead at 13. Nearly all of the Terps’ big plays in the first quarter came courtesy of OSU special teams mishaps.

That was exemplified by the fact that the Buckeyes led 187 to 1 in the yardage department following the game’s first 15 minutes. Barrett finished the quarter 10-12 passing for 162 yards, with a score in the air and on the ground. Despite the consensus that OSU is a running team with a stable of two top backs, the running game has been neutralized in recent weeks. That’s seemed to be due to offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson’s insistence on getting the passing game up to snuff, and opposing defenses selling out to stop the run. That has allowed Barrett the mojo he has been missing since his first year as a starter.

On their first possession of the second quarter, running back J.K. Dobbins appeared to be juking his way to another first down, only to have the ball knocked free as he attempted to cut to the inside. The turnover put the Terps in possession at their own 48-yard line. Despite the good field position, the Buckeye defense was able to force a punt.

The following drive featured a Barrett double-pump on a screen pass that ended up in a loss, two overthrows of wide open WRs, and a Weber loss of six. However, perhaps the worst play of the drive was the 21-yard punt from Drue Chrisman that set the Terps up with possession at the 36, and continued to add special teams frustration in what otherwise was a completely dominant performance by the Buckeyes.

For the second time in the game, Maryland went for it on fourth down in Ohio State territory. The first time was unsuccessful, and on the second attempt, Baker came around the edge untouched to get a sack and forced a fumble that was recovered by Bortenschlager.

On the next offensive drive, the Buckeyes turned to Dobbins to move the ball down the field. With the pace cranked up to 11, the freshman running back picked up 40 yards on the drive before Barrett found tight end Marcus Baugh for a 10-yard touchdown reception that included a hurdle over a Terp defender.

With 4:38 left in the first half, Bortenschlager completed his first pass of the game to set up a third and 1, on which Sam Hubbard shed his blocker to tackle Johnson for a seven-yard loss and force a punt.

After the Buckeyes moved the ball from mid-field to just outside the redzone on the next drive, Barrett pitched the ball to Dobbins moving to the left, who subsequently tossed it to H-back Parris Campbell, who followed a seal block by Barrett and showed his elite-level speed racing into the endzone to increase OSU’s lead to 34-7.

Towards the end of the first half, Amir Riep was flagged for an unnecessary block in the back that brought back a K.J. Hill return that would have set the Buckeyes up in the Maryland redzone. With 15 seconds left in the half, and the Buckeyes on five, Barrett threw a strike to Austin Mack in the front corner of the endzone to end the first half with the Buckeyes up 41-7.

In the first 30 minutes, Barrett went 17-25 for 252 yards and three passing TDs, plus his rushing score. He completed passes to seven receivers, and the Buckeyes dominated total yardage 361-26. Dobbins finished the first half with 68 yards on 10 carries. The first half performance was even more impressive when combined with last year’s Maryland game.

Following back-to-back losses on the first drive after halftime, Tyquan Lewis broke through the Maryland O-line untouched to record OSU’s fourth sack of the game and force yet another punt.

On the next drive, Barrett broke free from a defender in the backfield and raced up the field for a 35-yard gain, his biggest pickup on the ground on the day. Despite getting into the redzone, Sean Nuernberger missed a 29-yard field goal attempt to add to the day’s special teams problems. He was also flagged for a kickoff out-of-bounds in the game.

Later in the third quarter, Weber picked up 35 yards on a drive that was capped with the running back picking up his first TD of the game, extending the lead to 48-7, and wrapping up the first team’s afternoon.

With the second-string defense on the field, true-freshman linebacker Baron Browning dropped back into a spy position on Bortenschlager, and then rushed into the backfield to force the second strip-sack of the game. Sophomore defensive tackle Jashon Cornell recovered the fumble for the Buckeyes.

With backup quarterback Dwayne Haskins operating with a short field, Dobbins turned what could have been a tackle for loss into his first touchdown of the game, and OSU took a 55-7 lead with 2:08 left in the third quarter.

On the subsequent drive, Bortenschlager rushed on third down and slide short of the first down marker, but DB Damon Arnette hit him in the head, and after review the Buckeye was charged with targeting and ejected. On the game he had a pair of pass breakups and a tackle, but will have to miss the first half against Nebraska next week. Bortenschlager had to be attended to on the field, and did not return to the game.

In the fourth quarter, Antonio Williams became the fifth Buckeye to record a rushing touchdown, as he took the ball to paydirt from the 8-yard line, moving the OSU lead to 62-7.

The Maryland offense finally got on the board following a botched option read between Haskins and Williams resulted in a turnover. Terp running back Javon Leake took a handoff from the 20 and cut through the OSU defense to move the score to 62-14.

Ohio State will be back on the gridiron next Saturday in Lincoln, Neb. as the Buckeyes take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 7:30 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

The Buckeye right guard is set to undergo surgery.

After sustaining an apparent leg injury in the first half against the Maryland Terrapins, it’s now been announced that right guard Branden Bowen has a fractured fibula and tibia, per his mother on Twitter.

So hard as a mom to be across the country with my son hurt! He will have surgery to fix the tibia and fibula fractures. ❤️❤️@BrandenBowen

— Natalie Bowen (@NatalieOSUmom) October 7, 2017

As mentioned in the tweet, Bowen will have surgery to fix the fractures. While recovery time for a fractured fibula/tibia can vary, it seems that Bowen’s season is more than likely finished.

A third-year member of the team with sophomore eligibility, Bowen has started in every game this season for the Ohio State Buckeyes. His first career start was in the season opener against the Indiana Hoosiers—a game where he helped pave the way for 292 rushing yards.

We wish Bowen the best, and hope for a speedy recovery.
