And he was incredibly successful on those runs, too

Ohio State was one of the best teams in the country at converting short-yardage situations. They ranked 12th in power success rate, getting a first down on 80% of third or fourth down with two or fewer yards to go.

The Buckeyes’ reliance on J.T. shouldering the load in those short-yardage situations was most apparent in the Big Ten Championship on a crucial fourth-and-one, where all 22 players on the field knew exactly what the play would be:

The spot was good, J.T. still got the first down.

On a recent Buckeye Talk podcast, the team discussed how important J.T. Barrett was on third-and-short and how the Buckeyes used him, like Meyer did with Tebow, almost as the offense’s fullback.

So I took a look at just how effective and reliant the offense has been on J.T. Barrett running in short-yardage situations. While the offense as a whole may convert 80% of short-yardage situations, how effective is J.T. specifically, and how does that compare with quarterbacks in other offenses?

I pulled the top-100 players with the most rushing attempts this season, 15 of whom were quarterbacks. The top four QBs, unsurprisingly, were from triple-option teams, and were removed from this list (I kept Tulane’s Jonathan Banks in because their system is a little different and he was just 13th on the list).

I filtered down to just these 11 quarterbacks because: A) I assumed they’d be most likely to get the carry in short-yardage situations if they’re also a frequent runner anyway, and B) The data isn’t set up to easily allow me to pull all QB rushing info.

For those 11 quarterbacks, I looked at how many third-and-3 or less rushing attempts plus how many 4th down attempts the team had overall, then looked at what percentage of those short-yardage attempts went to the quarterback, and how effective they were in those situations.

J.T. had the 6th-most rushing attempts of non-triple option quarterbacks, with 149. Lamar Jackson, unsurprisingly, had the most with 208 attempts. These two quarterbacks were the short-yardage stars:


As you can see in the table above (which is sorted by QB percentage of short-yardage carries), J.T. had more short-yardage attempts than (likely) any other quarterback in the country, with 27 out of the team’s 61. He also had the second-highest percentage of his team’s short-yardage runs, behind only Lamar Jackson (44.3% to Jackson’s 46.8%).

Barrett was also incredibly effective, despite opposing defenses almost always knowing what was coming. He converted 77.8% of short-yardage attempts, which was again second-best behind Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald who converted an incredible 22 of his 25 attempts.

Barrett was also five-for-five on 4th down attempts, averaging 2.2 yards with a long run of 4 yards.

The Ohio State offense overall was elite in short-yardage situations, too. J.K. Dobbins had 26.2% of third- or fourth-and-short attempts, getting the first down on 81.3% of his attempts. Have to thank the offensive line there.

But Dobbins’ success in those short-yardage situations also gives some evidence that next year’s offense may not necessarily have to just rely on quarterback runs, since Dobbins already had 16 attempts (converting 13 of them) this season.

Also, two former Buckeye RBs are heading toward career-high seasons and two others are nominees for Walter Payton Man of the Year honors.

There are only a few weeks left of the 2017 NFL regular season, and in Week 14, there were some big moments for former Ohio State players, but ultimately the week had been cast under the shadow of the scary injury to Ryan Shazier in last week’s MNF game. The Steelers were sure to show Shazier some love in their primetime win on Sunday, honoring him throughout the evening.

Two more Buckeyes are now sidelined for the remainder of the season, while two former Ohio State running backs are on their way to having career-high seasons. Two other former Buckeyes were added to list of nominees for this year’s Walter Payton Man of the Year honor.

Here’s how former Buckeyes fared in Week 14 of the NFL.

Shazier’s scary injury


Last week’s Monday Night Football game took a scary turn quickly when Steelers’ LB Ryan Shazier went to make a tackle. As he fell to the ground, he immediately grabbed his back and signaled for medical personnel to come help just before he flipped over onto his back without the use of his legs.

In what seemed like a whirlwind over the next few hours, the remainder of the primetime rivalry game was overshadowed by worried coaches, players and fans. In the days following the injury, the team flew Shazier’s family to his bedside in Cincinnati, before the Buckeye was helicoptered back to Pittsburgh. He then underwent spinal stabilization surgery.

Little information has come out in the seven days after the initial injury. Whether or not Shazier has movement or feeling in his legs is unknown, but far and wide the popular concern is less about his future on the football field, and more about the quality of his future as a person.

Before the Steelers’ Week 14 Sunday Night Football matchup, lots of players honored Shazier with graphics on their cleats. He was on the minds of his teammates all game long -- another AFC East rivalry game that was won by one-point. Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger exited the field on Sunday with a Shazier jersey draped over his shoulder and the team proceeded to FaceTime their friend from the locker room, where they honored Shazier with the game ball.


Shazier also posted a video after watching the win with his family in the hospital. He may not be physically on the field with his brothers, but he’s always there in spirit and in mind.


Football is family. It’s the core principle behind the hard-hitting action, and at the end of the day, all that matters is that Ryan Shazier has a smooth recovery, and embraces the amount of support he has all around him.

Walter Payton Man of the Year Nominees


Nominees were announced this week for one of the NFL’s most prestigious honors, the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, given to an NFL player for outstanding community service activities off of the field as well as excellence on the field. Two former Buckeyes were nominated to represent their teams for the annual honor, Cameron Heyward (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Malcolm Jenkins (Philadelphia Eagles).

Less about their contributions on the football and more about their performances in their communities, these are two excellent examples of men who have used their football platform to make positive changes. Both Heyward and Jenkins embody the type of men that should be recognized for their hard work in their communities.

This is one of those awards where even just being nominated really is an honor. 29 of the 32 nominees will receives a $50k donation to a charity of their choice, with the two runners-up receiving a $100k donation and the winner’s charity receiving $250k. Each of those donation amounts (per person) will also be matched and donated in the players’ name to expand Character Playbook across the country.

The group of 32 nominees will be narrowed down to the three finalists that will be announced in Jan. 2018. The winner will be announced during NFL Honors — a two-hour primetime awards special — on Feb. 3, the night before Super Bowl LII at 9 pm ET on NBC.

Thursday Night Football standouts


As the Week 14 matchups got underway on Thursday, several Buckeyes saw playing time, but two really had standout performances, Marshon Lattimore and Michael Thomas.

Just a week after missing time due to an ankle injury, rookie CB Marshon Lattimore made his return known on Thursday against the Falcons. Not only was he often matched up with one of the top wideouts in the league (Julio Jones), but he made the veteran a limited option for Atlanta QB Matt Ryan, and was even able to snag an interception.

Lattimore — well on his way toward winning Defensive Rookie of the Year honors — finished the matchup with three total tackles, one pass breakup and an interception that he took back 33 yards before being taken down.


In just his second-year in the league, the “Can’t guard Mike” moniker just continues to hold true for wideout Michael Thomas. He finished Thursday night’s matchup with 117 receiving yards — tied for a season-high and tied for No. 3 in his career -- and a touchdown, marking his first back-to-back games with a score since Weeks 3 and 4.

Thomas is averaging 11.7 yards per catch on the season, and now has a three-way tie with his career-high of 10 receptions on 14 targets -- last time he saw that much action was in Week 17 in 2016 against the Falcons.

Plays of the Week

Rod Smith


The suspension of Ezekiel Elliott was probably the best thing that could have ever happened to running back Rod Smith in terms of his NFL career. The Cowboys will likely be very happy to welcome Elliott back in two weeks, and have the two Buckeyes working in tandem now that Smith has grown some confidence both in himself and with the coaching staff.

On Sunday, Smith finished with six carries for 47 yards and a touchdown, on top of five receptions for 117 yards and another score — an 81-yard trek to seal the game. This marks the first two-TD game of Smith’s career, and his third game in a row with a trip to the endzone. Without question, 2017 will be Smith’s career-best in the NFL.

Carlos Hyde


The fourth year rusher for the Niners is well on his way to having a career-season. He finished Week 14 with 14 carries for 78 yards and a touchdown after bouncing to the outside for the score. El Guapo is only one score away from tying his his career-high in a season (6) and 217 yards from matching his season-best production (988 rushing yards).

Other Notables

• A week after serving a team suspension, LB Darron Lee was back in the lineup for the Jets, and claimed five total tackles in Week 14.
• Colts’ DT Johnathan Hankins had a career-high game on Sunday with eight total tackles against the Bills.
• Seahawks QB Russell Wilson (a Wisconsin alum) made good on his bet with one of the team’s ball boys who happens to be a huge Ohio State fan — I was a little surprised the bet wasn’t with TE Nick Vannett, but I digress. With the Buckeyes winning the Big Ten title over the Badgers last weekend, Wilson owned up in a throwback Troy Smith jersey.

Injury Report and Inactives

• Just weeks after being out with a neck stinger, Colts LB John Simon -- who started the season as one of the best defenders on the Indianapolis team -- was placed on IR earlier this week with a shoulder injury.
• With Simon and Shazier out for the remainder of the season, the number of Buckeyes to have their season cut short due to injury is now at 12.
• Other Buckeyes inactive due to injury in Week 14 were Braxton Miller (concussion) and Eli Apple (hip). Rookie center Pat Elflein was also out this week for the Vikings with a shoulder injury.
• QB Cardale Jones was a healthy scratch again for the Los Angeles Chargers.

A weekend off for the Buckeyes still saw plenty of recruiting business in Columbus.

This weekend was the first in awhile for the Buckeye football team to not take the field. While fans and the players are anxiously awaiting the primetime match-up against Southern Cal on December 29 in Dallas for the Cotton Bowl, the Ohio State staff knows they have to hit the recruiting trail hard with the early signing period nearing ever so quickly. Fortunately, the Buckeyes played host to more than a couple of top prospects and commits over the weekend, giving the proof that there’s no letting up on the plan of signing the top recruiting class in 2018.

Keeping the best in-state?


Over the weekend the Buckeyes were able to host in-state offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. The Cincinnati native hails from the prestigious and football tradition-rich St. Xavier High School, one that puts its kids into college programs each and every year. One prospect from St. X that will surely keep that trend moving is Johnson. At 6'7, 265 pounds, Paris is only a sophomore with two more prep seasons yet to be played. With that body frame, obviously top programs all over the country will be taking notice. Not to mention, besides his size, his feet and hands have made him already a top lineman in the talented state of Ohio.


While on his unofficial visit to Columbus, Johnson was extended his latest offer when the Buckeyes made up their minds that they too will be in on this recruitment—and rightfully so. While Urban Meyer has recruited so well nationally, he has made it clear that his first priority is keeping Ohio’s best at home and suiting up for the Scarlet and Gray. This weekend certainly may have been a step in that direction and the groundwork for beginning what will need to be a strong relationship between the two parties.

With seven offers already, this will surely be a recruitment that everyone is involved with as Johnson looks to be a top prospect nationally at any position. While it’s early, schools such as Clemson, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Virginia, Indiana, and Ohio State are the first to join this party, but it’s only a matter of time before the others join. Ohio State does hold a few early predictions on the 247Sports crystal ball, but after an official offer coming this weekend, the Buckeyes may just extend an early lead.

Bucks make the cut, as usual


Before the start of the 2017 football season, the summer saw recruits all over the country naming their top schools lists. The Buckeyes fortunately were nearly on every list imaginable, proving just how successful this football staff recruits. With the season coming down to an end and bowl season being the only agenda item left, those top schools lists will surely begin coming in at a rapid pace. Over the weekend, the Buckeyes saw themselves land on not one, but two top lists, cementing their status as a perennial power in recruiting.

On Saturday, a top 2019 receiver, Arjei Henderson (Richmond, TX), cut his list of schools to six before he makes a final decision. The country’s fourth ranked receiver and the third best player in a loaded state of Texas for the 2019 class has nearly fifty—yes, fifty—scholarship offers, so a final list of six is pretty serious to say the least. The 6'1, 180-pound five-star can do it all. Whether it’s making a play with his feet or his hands, Henderson has proved why he is not only one of the best at his position, but also why he is ranked in the top twenty at any position for 2019.


Making the cut included Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, and Ohio State. While the good news is that Ohio State is in the fold, the bad news is that Oklahoma has thought to have been the clear leader for some time now with Texas trailing. However, given the success Urban Meyer has had in Texas, don’t put an end to this one just yet, because if the Buckeyes make the full-court press on Arjei, anything is possible.

In keeping with the trend, yesterday, the Buckeyes once again found themselves in the running for another top Texas receiver with a top schools list. This time, Jordan Wittington, a Cuero native, trimmed his list down from nearly thirty to a final six. Making the cut for the 6'1, 200-pound 5-star included Texas, Texas A&M, Florida, Oklahoma, UCLA, and Ohio State. The 2019 product is the seventh best ranked receiver in his class and the fifth best product overall in the Lone Star state.


For Jordan, the home team Texas Longhorns are the leader in this recruitment, but again, Urban Meyer’s track record in Texas head to head with in-state schools has proven to be nothing but successful. If Ohio State wants to be a serious threat, Wittington will need to get to campus, but being a 2019 prospect gives Ohio State enough time to make that happen.

Official visits galore


As previously mentioned, Columbus and specifically the Woody Hayes Athletic Facility was hopping this weekend with top recruits. Whether it was committed guys such as L’Christian “Blue” Smith and Jeremy Ruckert or un-committed prospects, Ohio State was a busy host to say the least. Take a look below to see just who was on campus over the weekend and the faces that prove they were having a great time seeing their future home, or what the Buckeyes have to offer.

The game was tied at 1-1 late into the third before the Buckeyes scored three in the last 5:13.

No matter how you do it or what process it entailed, a sweep over the No. 7 team in the country is one you’ll take whether you’re winless or ranked No. 1. Ohio State found a way to do just that with its second win over No. 7 Minnesota in Columbus. This time, it was a 4-1 victory.

The game was tied at 1-1 with just over five minutes left in the third period before a seemingly innocuous point shot off a faceoff win by Matt Miller beat Mat Robson and turned out to be the game winning goal.

Make no mistake: Ohio State was not the better team tonight. They outshot the Gophers 14-8 in the first and gained a 1-0 lead to show for it, but after that, they were absolutely manhandled possession wise by a more talented team. But sometimes you don’t play your best and yet find a way to win.

Mason Jobst scored that first goal for Ohio State to put the Bucks up 1-0, at 16:54 of the first. John Wiitala and Tommy Parran had the assists on Mason’s eighth of the year. A strong Ohio State forecheck at the top of the Minnesota zone forced a puck free, where Wiitala got it down low to Jobst, who walked to the front of the net with a 2-on-1. With the defender playing the pass, Jobst walked in and beat Robson.


Minnesota would respond in a big way in the second and third period, however. The Gophers outshot the Buckeyes 13-3 in the second and 13-7 in the third. But they’d only find a way to get one past Sean Romeo, who again provided a big boost to a relatively undermanned Ohio State team.

Goalies can be the equalizers between more and less talented teams, and Romeo has been better than both Robson and Eric Schierhorn in this weekend series, stopping 66/68 shots for a ridiculous .971 save percentage.

Minnesota would get that one, though, late in the second as Brent Gates beat Romeo with 13:54 left in the second. But that’d be all the Golden Gophers would get.

Minnesota ran over the Buckeyes in the third as well; it wasn’t to the same extent as in the second with Ohio State not sitting back to the same degree in a time game, but it was still a bulldozing. The shots were 13-7 and it sure seemed as though the game was trending in Minnesota’s direction once they tied it.

Then Matt Miller won the battle of the Mat(t)’s and won it for the good guys with double T’s.


Weis won the faceoff back and gained the lone assist on Miller’s third of the year at 14:47 of the third.

That marker would prove to be the difference in the game, but Ohio State wasn’t done.

Tanner Laczynski scored his eighth of the year on an empty net shot from the neutral zone to make it 3-1. Jobst and Dakota Joshua were on to prevent a Gopher goal and gained the assists on the goal with 1:12 left.


Jobst would add his second of the night for OSU’s second empty netter to make it 4-1 and completely salt this one away. He shot it from shy of the red line with a defenseman in his face but hit the twine nonetheless. Weis and Laczynski had the assists on Mason’s ninth of the year at 19:45.


A close game that looked headed for overtime if Ohio State was lucky turned into a multiple goal victory over the No. 7 team in the country. Even if Ohio State got run over for nearly two periods and couldn’t stem Minnesota’s comeback, they got the win and then added two goals for good measure.

That’s a pretty nice way to cap the first half of Ohio State’s season. The team will be back in action on Dec. 29 in Columbus, as the 10-4-4 Buckeyes host Niagara.
