On Tuesday night, 2 top prospects committed to the Buckeyes. What does this all mean?

The early signing period begins in a week for college football. This is a new thing being introduced, and it’s cranked up the intensity on the recruiting trail. As offers are still flying around, some recruits are making their verbal commitments now—with the plan to sign later. According to Bud Elliott, SB Nation’s recruiting guru, some coaches expect to have most of their recruiting class signed in the early signing period.

With Dec. 20 being the first day of the early pen-to-paper period for recruits, Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes got some good news on Tuesday night when four-star wide receiver Kamryn Babb and four-star defensive tackle Tommy Togiai verbally committed to the Buckeye program.

By having two more high-caliber recruits in the fold, what does this mean for OSU?

It’s a runaway

The gap between the Buckeyes, who have the No. 1 recruiting class right now according to a couple recruiting websites, and the No. 2 team is now even larger.

Marc Givler of Rivals.com broke it down in a tweet after the duo signed.

#OhioState has opened up a nearly 500-point lead for the top spot in the Rivals team recruiting rankings after tonight's double boom https://t.co/Po9GD8zSSN #Buckeyes

— Marc Givler (@MarcGivlerBG) December 13, 2017

According to Rivals.com, both the Bucks and Miami Hurricanes, who are the No. 2 program, have 21 recruits in the class committed. However, OSU has the slight edge in five-star recruits (3 to 2) and four-star recruits (15 to 14). Using the point totals that Rivals.com has come up with, OSU has a commanding lead over The U, 3061-2587.

Taking a look at 247sports, the Texas Longhorns are the No. 2 team behind Ohio State—but the margins are a little bit closer. This recruiting site has the Buckeyes on top by a score of 308.31-283.97.

Columbus is the city

There’s a few big factors that are helping draw the recruits in. First, it appears that Columbus is a stop on the way to the NFL. Whether you are on offense or defense, or play at cornerback or third-string quarterback, you can find a way into the professional football circuit. No doubt that’s been a positive recruiting point for the staff to lure in the best high school talent.

Couple that with the constant success on the gridiron, and now you have not only the ability to improve one’s draft stock, but you can be a part of a winning program rich in tradition. Fresh off another Big Ten Championship, the Buckeyes proved that they are kings of the conference. (Something Alabama can’t say.)

While it may not be the top priority if the NFL is seen as the destination, but the academics at Ohio State help them stand out. In the News & World rankings of best colleges, OSU showed up in a tie for 54th. They are in the same ballpark as Illinois, Wisconsin and Penn State, but between the four, only Ohio State has been the consistent power in both the classroom and on the field.

Those three factors are just some of the reasons for why Meyer has been able to bring in the best talent from the high school circuit. And we aren’t even mentioning the coaching staff’s ability to recruit. For example: Larry Johnson is one of the better defensive line recruiters in the nation. It’s the perfect storm for a recruit; Ohio State has the ability to make one shine on the field, and if they stick around, they can get a degree from a prestigious university.

Don’t expect Meyer and company to cool off on the recruiting trail. The coaching staff makes it a mission to “plant flags” in all parts of the country. On Tuesday night, their work showed.

And then an offer

On top of the two commits, Ohio State sent out an offer, too. This time around it belonged to another four-star recruit in Cam’Ron Kelly. Kelly, a native of Chesapeake, VA, is a cornerback and plays for Oscar Smith High School.

He made it known on Twitter late Tuesday that he got an offer from the Scarlet and Gray.

Blessed and honored to receive an offer from THE Ohio State University !!! #GoBucks #BuckeyeNation pic.twitter.com/P8dquehKJm

— Cam'Ron Kelly (@CamRonJKelly) December 13, 2017

According to 247sports, Kelly is a class of 2019 prospect and is graded as the 154th best prospect in the class. At the CB position, he is seen as the 11th best; in the state of Virginia, the recruiting outlet has him as the third best.

Already, he has 36 offers—and some of them come from pretty elite schools. Three of the teams in the College Football Playoff (Clemson, Georgia and Alabama) have made him an offer. It’s still early in his recruitment, but he’s garnered attention from some of the best programs in the country.

BOOOOOOOM!! The Buckeyes land another big time talent.

It’s been a busy week for Ohio State recruiting and Tuesday saw two more commitments for the Buckeyes. First, with the news from Kamryn Babb and now from four-star defensive tackle Tommy Togiai.

Larry Johnson’s defensive line is already labeled as one of the best on the college scene, and from how things are shaping on the recruiting trail things won’t be changing anytime soon. Slated to lose a couple standout defenders to the NFL following the Cotton Bowl, adding some depth at defensive tackle will help keep the group at the top.

— Tommy Togiai (@Big_Tom71) December 13, 2017

Togiai, who chose Ohio State over scholarship offers from the likes of Washington, USC, and Utah, is currently considered the seventh defensive tackle, and 97th overall prospect in the class of 2018, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Want to know more about the U.S. Army All-American and his commitment to Ohio State? Land-Grant Holy Land will have more on Togiai’s commitment to the Buckeyes soon.

BOOOOOOOM!!!

As we rapidly approach the early signing period, recruiting news certainly isn’t at a premium in the college football world. For the past week or so, the recruiting world has been turned on its head by dozens of commitments, and dozens more decommitments, thanks in large part to a particularly active coaching change season, as well as the aforementioned early signing day.

With classes all over the country nearing capacity, coaches are putting the final touches on their 2018 groups, and shifting focus towards 2019 and beyond, and just minutes ago, Urban Meyer and Ohio State landed one of their biggest remaining targets, as Missouri wide receiver Kamryn Babb announced his commitment on Twitter.

Never would’ve thought I’d be in the position I’m in today, anything is possible with God.. All praise to the Lord above.

Jeremiah 29:11 pic.twitter.com/d5OJQ0y0CW

— Kamryn Babb® (@kamm_o) December 13, 2017

Kamryn Babb is the 20th pledge for Meyer and crew, as the Saint Louis native picked the Buckeyes over opportunities at over 25 programs such as Michigan, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Michigan State. He’s the second true receiver in the class, along with Ohio native L’Christian “Blue” Smith, though Jaelen Gill and Jeremy Ruckert will also be key pieces of the passing game in the future.

Babb is the nation’s 65th best player, the 12th ranked receiver, and second ranked Missouri prospect, according to 247sports composite. In Missouri, the only prospect above him is defensive tackle Michael Thompson.

With Babb in the class, Ohio State likely only has one more spot open for a receiver, and that final receiver could end up being Babb’s high school teammate, and former Nebraska commit Cameron Brown.

Babb isn’t just a huge get for the Buckeyes because of his on the field talent, however. He’s also very close with a number of Buckeye commits and targets, including Cameron Brown, Michael Thompson, and perhaps most importantly, quarterback commit Emory Jones.

Even though rumors of his potential flip to Alabama have been flying for weeks, the talented OSU quarterback commit welcomed Babb to the Buckeye family on Twitter.

Also, Greg Schiano might be getting paaaaaaaid!

“Ohio State athletics is amongst the best in the country, particularly the football program which is steeped in tradition. From generations of national championships to Heisman Trophy legends like two-time winner Archie Griffin. Fans are brought up in Ohio State sports much like a religion.”

-Mike Dyce, FanSided

I know this won’t be a surprise to regular LGHL visitors, but Ohio State now officially has the best fans in the country. According to FanSided, based on an evaluation of longevity, size, buzz, and passion, Buckeye Nation was the best fanbase in the country this year.

In second place was the Alabama Crimson Tide, followed by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Oklahoma Sooners. Other Big Ten teams making the top-24 were Penn State (10), Michigan (11), Wisconsin (13), and Nebraska (23).

Clearly this list is heavily weighted towards the football side of the equation, but with perennial basketball power UNC in the top-five, and Kentucky (6), Duke (7), and Kansas (12) also in the mix, obviously other sports were factored in as well.

With Chris Holtmann seemingly bringing energy and excitement back into the basketball program, there’s no reason that Ohio State shouldn’t be at the top of this list year-in and year-out.

While there are always the pessimistic fans on social media, and the obnoxious attention-seeking fans directly in front of the cameras (I’m looking at you Buck-I-Guy and Mr. Big Nut), for the most part, the Buckeye fandom is a great group of knowledgable, passionate, dedicated fans. Go Bucks!

“Tennessee’s buyout to Schiano in the event of a standard firing would’ve been 75 percent of the remaining money on his deal, according to the MOU obtained by 247. If Schiano were to sue Tennessee and prove that the deal was binding in court, that’d leave him slated to receive more than $20 million.”

-Alex Kirshner, SB Nation

I’m no legal scholar, but it seems to me that Greg Schiano has at least a good enough case to put a lot of pressure on the University of Tennessee. Whether there was one signature or three on the memorandum of understanding, UT made a commitment to the Ohio State defensive coordinator and then backed out because it was too afraid of its delusional fanbase to stand up for its decision.

It could be argued that the botched hiring has permanently damaged Schiano’s ability to be hired as a head coach, and therefore, if he does decide to pursue all, or a portion, of the money that he was originally promised, it would be a compelling case.

Would he win if it went to trial? I have no idea, but with all of the money that the university will have to pay to former coaches and ADs, it might want to cut its losses and just reach a mutually beneficial settlement with Schiano.

That being said, it likely means that the maligned coach is staying put in Columbus at least for another year, if not the foreseeable future, and based on the statistical output that his defenses have achieved in the past two years, that is probably a good thing for the Buckeyes.

“The university made $1,353,108 in total net revenue from 2017 beer sales in Ohio Stadium, according to public records. It is a 13.8 percent increase from the $1,166,497 generated in 2016 — the first year the ‘Shoe implemented stadium-wide beer sales.”

-Jacob Myers, The Lantern

Newsflash, sports fans like to drink beer, and sometimes that enjoyment leads to bad behavior. In the second year that Ohio State has allowed beer sales throughout Ohio Stadium, the university saw a 13.8 percent increase in sales, while also seeing an increase of 77 percent in terms of the arrests at games throughout the year.

In Myers’ article, he notes that most of the arrests were not violent, and didn’t result in someone being taken to jail. Instead, it was generally underage fans attempting to purchase alcohol. Those fans were simply given a summons to appear in court.

To combat students purchasing multiple beers and giving them to underage friends, vendors in the south stands only sold a single beer per ID, but that clearly didn’t stop underage fans from trying to get creative.

Fortunately, the booze sales go directly to funding four new University Police officers and increased security around campus, as well as “supporting Ohio State’s Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Misuse Prevention and Recovery.”
