While 2019 inside linebacker Shane Lee hasn’t officially released a top schools list yet, Ohio State will likely be included when he does.

With the college football season now at a close, coaches across the country will now switch their focus to strengthening their program with recruiting. Ohio State has once again done a tremendous job of securing some of the most talented prospects in the country, as the class sits at No. 2 nationally behind only Georgia.

In years past, the weeks immediately following post-season play were some of the busiest of the year as coaches worked hard to finalize the current year's recruiting class. However, this year is a first as the early signing period will allow coaches to focus on next year’s recruiting class.

Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes’ coaching staff are some of the best at what they do though, and because of this, they have been working on the 2019 recruiting class for some time already. The team currently holds just one commitment, but the coaches have been establishing important relationships with some of the top talents in next year’s class.

One of those big name prospects is inside linebacker Shane Lee (Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy). The four-star linebacker just finished up his junior season of play but he already holds an impressive offer list.

Programs such as Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Notre Dame, Michigan, Penn State, Nebraska, and Ohio State have all offered the four-star talent, and while he hasn’t officially released a list of his top schools, it does appear he has a group of four schools he views above the rest.

Brian Dohn of 247Sports.com spoke with Lee recently and he talked about the four schools he is in contact with the most, including Ohio State.

The four programs that appear to be leading the way in Lee’s recruitment include Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, and Florida State.

When speaking about his relationship with Ohio State at this point in his recruitment, he only had positive things to say.

“Ohio State, I probably talk to the most,” Lee said to Dohn. “It’s nothing much about the school. It’s trying to get to know me as a person and build a relationship. It’s less about football and more about the community feel from Columbus.”

Ohio State assistant coach Larry Johnson is the one leading the charge for the Buckeyes in Lee’s recruitment and like usual, he is doing and saying all of the right things.

Lee is gearing up for one of the busiest years in his young life. He will soon be attending junior camps and taking more unofficial visits to schools he is interested in. The 247Sports Composite Rankings have him listed as the No. 2 ILB in the country and the No. 49 overall recruit in the class. He is also the No. 1 prospect from the talent-rich state of Maryland.

Because of these high regards, Lee will likely be one of the hottest names in the 2019 recruiting class. The Buckeyes are one of the few programs that have already received one official visit from the blue-chip prospect. Expect them to try and get him on campus more than once in the coming year.

Future Buckeyes continue to earn praise from Army Bowl

Ohio State commit and early-enrollee Tommy Togiai (Pocatello, ID/Highland) continues to earn praise for his performance in last weekend's US Army All-American Game.

Togiai, the country’s No. 9 DT, finished the game with three tackles and a forced fumble. However, it was his ability to get off the line that caught the attention of those watching the event.

Adam Friedman and Josh Helmholdt of Rivals.com listed the prospects that stood out to them the most, and one of those on the list was Togiai.

When talking about the four-star DT, the two said he isn’t going to be the first noticed based on his physical stature; however, when he is on the field, it is tough to keep your eyes off of him.

“The biggest weapon in Togiai’s arsenal is an explosive first step, and from there he knows how to use his hands and exploit leverage on offensive linemen.”

Another future Buckeye to make noise at the weekend’s event was four-star safety commit Tyreke Johnson (Jacksonville, FL/Trinity Christian Academy.)

Rival’s Adam Gorney gave out his awards for the top performers in the game and Johnson was a recipient of one of the better ones. His “Hard Hat” award, given to the hardest hitting player in the game, went to Johnson.

The four-star safety, who will likely transition to cornerback at the next level, showed all week that he was one of the best attendees in both coverage and in strength.

“This might be the easiest award to give out because five-star Ohio State signee Tyreke Johnson was a maniac especially during practice,” Gorney said when explaining his selection of Johnson as the recipient of the award. “No one was safe coming across the middle because Johnson was head hunting.”

Like previously mentioned, Johnson will likely transition to CB at Ohio State, mainly due to the lack of depth at the position. Throughout his high school football career, he continuously proved he had what it took to succeed at the next level and on the biggest stage of his football career, he proved it once again.

With a win over top-ranked Michigan State yesterday, Chris Holtmann’s squad is suddenly considered good.

“That’s what we came here for. We’ve had a couple of down years, but this is the start that we wanted to get to...This is just the start of it.”

-Ohio State forward Keita Bates-Diop, via Bill Landis, Cleveland.com

This season was not supposed to be a hot one for Ohio State basketball. It was supposed to be a long, hard road of rebuilding; of transitioning to a new coach, and of getting by with a decimated roster. However, all signs are currently pointing to something else altogether. And while it is certainly too early in conference play to say anything definitive, the fact remains that the Buckeyes are 4-0 in Big Ten play, tied atop the conference standings with Purdue, and just defeated the top-ranked team in the nation.

There is little doubt that the Buckeyes’ win over Michigan State on Sunday could have been a fluke. After all, the game was played in Columbus in an arena that was at 90 percent capacity for the first time in a long time. Michigan State may have been overconfident after a 30-point win over Maryland. However, the Buckeyes dominated the No. 1 Spartans for nearly the entire game as they handed Tom Izzo’s squad just their second loss of the season. It was a signature win for Chris Holtmann, akin to Thad Matta’s unexpected victory over No. 1 Illinois in 2005 during the Buckeyes’ last game of the season.

Holtmann has shown through 17 games this season that he has a solid plan for his team. The Buckeyes have been able to make adjustments that didn’t seem possible for the past couple of seasons. They have put together a good product on the court that inevitably raises the bar moving forward into conference play.

Still, the plan for this season should not change. It is still a building year for Holtmann, and while his team has certainly performed better than expected, those expectations should not shift. Dreams of a Big Ten Title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament should remain distant. There is a lot of basketball yet to be played, and teams that have started off slow in conference play this season should not be counted out.

“The historic beauty of the league has been its perennial grind: the tough road games, the dangerous teams at the bottom of the pack and the elite coaching. It lacks that edge this season.”

-Myron Medcalf, ESPN

As exciting as Ohio State’s win yesterday over Michigan State was, it may highlight a larger, systemic problem in the Big Ten conference.

The teams this season have not been as strong across the board as they have been in previous years. Last year, also considered a down year for the conference, seven teams made the NCAA Tournament (three went on to the Sweet 16). This season, just four Big Ten teams are projected to make the Big Dance, according to ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi.

Ohio State, obviously, has been a pleasant surprise for the conference. Last week, Lunardi had them projected as a bubble team, and a win over Michigan State would certainly bolster their tournament resume. Similarly, Indiana, under first-year coach Archie Miller, has brought some strong performances with a likewise short roster this year. Along with Michigan State, Purdue was expected to carry the Big Ten’s reputation heading into this season as one of the conference’s two best teams. After dropping two straight games (including one to Western Kentucky), the Boilermakers appear to be back on track, and are riding an 11-game win streak. Michigan could also be a promising team for the conference.

However, that’s about where it stops. Injuries have certainly been an issue for many teams, preventing them from reaching their full potential. Northwestern hasn’t had nearly as strong of a showing as it did last season, when the Wildcats earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament bid, as both Vic Law and Bryant McIntosh have dealt with injury issues. Maryland’s Justin Jackson is out for the rest of the season with a torn labrum, and Wisconsin’s Kobe King is similarly out with a knee injury. Minnesota has dealt with a number of injuries as well, but is also working through the indefinite suspension of Reggie Lynch. Personnel issues aside, this could mark one of the worst seasons for the conference as a whole in years.

— Ohio State Wrestling (@wrestlingbucks) January 7, 2018

The Ohio State wrestling team has been absolutely dominating its competition so far this season, moving to a perfect 8-0 on the year, with its latest win coming against No. 17 Rutgers in Piscataway. The second-ranked Buckeyes defeated the Scarlet Knights by a 29-11 margin Sunday. Ohio State won seven of 10 matches on the day, but Rutgers managed some upsets, including 14th-ranked Eleazar DeLuca overcoming fifth-ranked Ke-Shawn Hayes at the 149-pound class.

Overall, the Buckeyes have outscored their dual-match competition 283-50 in eight matches this season. Five Ohio State wrestlers remain undefeated on the year, including junior Myles Martin (18-0), sophomore Luke Pletcher (18-0), redshirt sophomore Kollin Moore (14-0), junior Joey McKenna (6-0) and senior Kyle Snyder (4-0). Both Moore and Snyder are the top-ranked wrestlers nationally in their respective weight classes.

This match was just Snyder’s fourth of the season, as he has taken leave on several occasions to compete in international events. He should, however, be with the Buckeyes for much of the remainder of the season.

Bo Jordan opened up the scoring for the Buckeyes, earning a win at the 174-pound class. Next up, at 184-pounds, Martin pinned his opponent in just 37 seconds, earning a bonus point for Ohio State. Moore took the 197-pound class with an 18-7 major decision before Snyder’s much-anticipated return, which he won in under two minutes. Pletcher (133-pounds), McKenna (141-pounds) and Micah Jordan (157-pounds) also contributed to Ohio State’s win.

Next up, the Buckeyes head home to take on No. 14 Minnesota. They have a long way to go before the Big Ten Tournament in March in East Lansing. Ohio State won the tournament last year, but, per the usual, the conference is stacked, and the Buckeyes have a long road ahead to winning another title. Chief among their remaining competition is Iowa (No. 7), Penn State (No. 1) and Michigan (No. 8).

Baker was one of the leaders for the Buckeyes this past season.

Denzel Ward and Sam Hubbard were the first two Ohio State Buckeyes to declare for the NFL Draft. Now, add linebacker Jerome Baker to the list.

On Monday afternoon, Baker took to Twitter to thank Buckeye Nation, and to announce his future plans.

— Jerome Baker Jr. (@Lastname_Baker) January 8, 2018

Baker was one of the leaders on defense this past season. Leading up to the Cotton Bowl, he had 67 tackles and 6.5 sacks, and against the Trojans, Baker added to his electric season by recording .5 sacks, 5 tackles and a fumble recovery.

In the Big Ten Championship Game against Wisconsin, Baker etched his name into the record books with a 16-tackle performance, the most ever in the conference’s title game.

While this season was good, the Cleveland native had an exceptional sophomore season—one that included an 83-tackle performance. Last season, Baker also nabbed two interceptions, with both happening in OSU’s two biggest games of the season, Oklahoma and Michigan.

For his career, the 6-foot-1 stopper of offenses tallied 158 tackles, 17.5 tackle for loss, 7 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and two interceptions.

Here’s to success for Baker at the next level.

LGHL Alex Grinch joins Ohio State coaching staff

Grinch built up the Washington State defense over the past three seasons.

Over the course of the past month, there was rampant speculation that Alex Grinch, the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Washington State, was going to leave for a spot on the Ohio State Buckeyes coaching staff. His specific job on staff, however, hasn’t been released yet.

The speculation is now over, as it’s been officially announced that Grinch is part of the Buckeye program, per a press release from Ohio State athletics.

Grinch isn’t unfamiliar with Ohio; he grew up in Grove City, Ohio, and attended Mount Union. At Mount Union, he was part of a program that went 54-1 and won three national championships.

For the last 15 seasons, Grinch has been in the coaching ranks, with notable stops at Missouri (as a graduate assistant), Wyoming, and New Hampshire. At New Hampshire, Grinch was there at the same time as current UCLA head coach Chip Kelly. Grinch was a secondary coach from 2005-08 at New Hampshire; Kelly was the offensive coordinator from 1999-2006, before departing for the same position at Oregon.

At Wazzu, the defense became a turnover juggernaut under Grinch, forcing 51 turnovers over the last two seasons. In each of those years, WSU went to the Holiday bowl—however, they lost to Big Ten programs Minnesota and Michigan State, respectively.

Now in Columbus (and back home in Ohio), Grinch can get the long awaited redemption against Big Ten foes.
