Jayson Oweh (DE Penn State Nittany Lions)

Well, definitely a bummer. Really wanted Oweh in this class and we were there right at the end and just didn't pull it off. But really this only potentially hurts 2-3 years down the road, Oweh is at least 1-2 years from hitting the field in the B1G imo. If we can get Friday somehow, it would make up for this one. Either way, good luck Mr. Oweh.

The Holtmann era hasn’t suffered a Big Ten loss yet this season.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were on the road on Thursday night to battle the Iowa Hawkeyes. When all was said and done, the Buckeyes controlled a steady lead against their Big Ten foe, and won the game, 92-81. The Bucks improved to 12-4 (3-0) on the season with the win in Iowa City; the Hawkeyes now fall to 9-8 (0-4).

Keita Bates-Diop was the leading scorer in the game for the Scarlet and Gray, putting up 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting. He also had 13 rebounds and one assist. Double doubles have been a constant theme for the forward this season, and once again, he led the team on the rebounding front.

Jae’Sean Tate wasn’t too far behind him with an 18 point scoring output. Tate went 6-of-11 from the field, scoring 11 of his points in the first half.

The leader in the assist category on the night was Andrew Dakich, who ended the games with six dishes. He had five of them in the first half. On the scoring front, the Michigan graduate transfer went 1-of-2 from the field and ended the game with two points.

Here’s how this one went down.

Iowa got on the board first via an inside shot by forward Tyler Cook. Right after the Hawkeyes jumped up 2-0, the Buckeyes’ Jae’Sean Tate hit a rebuttal layup. For the next few minutes, both teams traded blows. At the under-16 media timeout, both squads were knotted up at 12-12.

After the break in the action, the Bucks carried on a mini five point run; Kaleb Wesson helped spark the run via a made field goal and a pair of free throws, while Kam Williams buried a shot from downtown. Iowa forward Luka Garza made a free throw to snap the run, however, two makes by Bates-Diop and Williams pushed the Buckeyes lead to 23-13.

Ohio State kept up the hot hand, and extended their lead to 12, 28-16, with 11:01 left in the first half. The next OSU scoring possession was highlight worthy, courtesy of Tate.

— Big Ten Network (@BigTenNetwork) January 5, 2018

Eight different Buckeyes got in on the scoring action in the first half, and by the time Micah Potter hit his first bucket with 7:00 minutes left, the visitors held a commanding 34-22 lead.

While he only had one basket in the first 20 minutes of play, guard Andrew Dakich led all players on the floor with five assists in the opening half. By halftime, the Buckeyes as a team were leading 46-32, behind 11 points from Tate and 5 rebounds from Bates-Diop.

That 14-point lead was due in large part from only three turnovers by the Bucks. While the Scarlet and Gray were keeping the rock in their possession, the Hawkeyes had eight of the possessions swiped away. Also, Iowa was shooting 41 percent compared to Ohio State’s 55 percent from the field.

Off the bat in the second half, the Buckeyes committed two turnovers, but maintained a 46-36 lead after a little less than two minutes of play. Things started to meltdown for the Buckeyes, as Tate was called for a charge, which was then converted into an and-1 for Iowa. OSU’s lead was cut down to 48-43, but Bates-Diop put up a jumper to give the Bucks a 7-point lead inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena with 15:26 left in regulation.

After the media timeout ended, allowing action to resume on the floor, the Bucks put up four straight points via Bates-Diop. On the other end, the Hawkeyes ran into a scoring drought—they ended up going over 2:30 without putting up a point on the scoreboard. Things worked back into the Buckeyes’ favor even more as Williams hit a baseline jumper, but also drew a shooting foul from Iowa guard Jordan Bohannon. Williams, however, would miss the freebie.

Bohannon would atone for his foul by hitting a shot on the Hawkeyes’ next possession, cutting their deficit to 58-45. Now with under 13 minutes left in the second frame, a missed transition layup by Kyle Young led to a three-pointer on the other end of the floor by Nicholas Baer.

Not too long later, Bates-Diop put together a highlight reel layup.

This Keita Bates-Diop spin move is a thing of beauty pic.twitter.com/8jZQCcJejI

— Land-Grant Holy Land (@Landgrant33) January 5, 2018

But as Iowa continued to make shots, Ohio State was doing the same. After a few minutes of back and forth buckets being buried, the Buckeyes still held on to a 68-54 lead with 8:54 left in the game.

C.J. Jackson put down a three pointer to lift the Buckeyes to a 71-58 lead. Prior to that triple, Jackson only made one other shot on the night—a layup midway through the second half.

Iowa would still continue to make free throws, mid-range buckets and three-pointers, but couldn’t climb out of the hole they were in at halftime. With under two minutes left, they got within 10 of the Buckeyes. But as soon as they got within single digits, Bates-Diop knocked down a three-pointer—sealing the win.

With the win, Ohio State comes back to Columbus and puts their unbeaten Big Ten record to the test against Michigan State on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET.

The game will be broadcast on CBS.

Denzel Ward would be the fifth Ohio State cornerback taken in the first round in the last five years.

NFL mock draft 1.0: We're still more than four months away, but it's time to start predicting the top picks. https://t.co/v1Nrc7mkuF

— USA TODAY Sports (@usatodaysports) January 4, 2018

The NFL Draft is still more than four months away, but the mock drafts are already out in full force. USA Today released their first 2018 mock draft earlier today, and three Buckeyes are projected to be picked in the first round. According to USA Today’s projections, a Buckeyes is going to have to wait for most of the first round to hear their name called, though.

Denzel Ward is projected to the Los Angeles Rams at pick number 26 in the 2018 NFL Draft. Ward would add to the Ohio State flavor already in Los Angeles, as both Joey Bosa and Cardale Jones are currently members of the Los Angeles Chargers.

The next Buckeye off the board would likely be very happy if the New England Patriots took him with the 31st pick in the NFL Draft in April. Defensive end Sam Hubbard would likely play a big part early on defense for the reigning Super Bowl champions. Currently the only former Buckeye on the Patriots is Nate Ebner, who is on injured reserve, but throughout the years Ohio State alumni have littered the New England roster.

Rounding out the first round in this mock draft, center Billy Price is projected to be taken with the 32nd pick by the Minnesota Vikings. This would reunite former Ohio State offensive lineman Pat Elflien with Price, who Price took over center for in Columbus this year.

Obviously with so much time before April’s NFL Draft, plenty will change, but it is fun to get an early idea on where some of the best Buckeyes from this year’s team might land.

“We call it competitive excellence. A lot of people have to step up, a lot of roles have to get filled, and a lot of young boys have to get to work.”

Ohio State running back Demario McCall via Nicholas Piotrowicz, The Toledo Blade

In case you’ve been living under a rock, you know Ohio State is going to have a new quarterback next season. On Friday night, J.T. Barrett took the field as the starting quarterback of the Buckeyes for the last time. Luckily Ohio State won’t have to look too far for Barrett’s replacement, as Dwayne Haskins should be the favorite to take Barrett’s spot, especially after how Haskins played in relief of an injured Barrett in the Michigan game.

What should worry some Ohio State fans is who will be protecting Haskins, or whoever ends up being the Buckeye quarterback. Not only has center Billy Price, who started every game over the past four years, exhausted his eligibility, but tackle Jamarco Jones has also graduated.

The biggest exodus for Ohio State will come on the defensive line. Defensive ends Tyquan Lewis and Jalyn Holmes, along with defensive tackles Tracy Sprinkle and Michael Hill have graduated, while defensive end Sam Hubbard has declared for the NFL Draft. At least the Buckeyes will have starters Nick Bosa and Dre’Mont Jones returning, along with young stars like Chase Young ready to make a name for themselves.

Luckily Urban Meyer and his staff have become familiar with have to replace starters. Not only does Ohio State have to replace their seniors year after year, but they annually have a high number of underclassmen declaring for the draft because of their talent. The Buckeyes will be fine in the end, and a new crop of talent always seems to rise to the top in Columbus.

“You see it all the time (where) teams lose games because it comes down to free throws. In the Big Ten a lot of these games come down to one or two possessions or one or two points.”

Ohio State forward Jae’Sean Tate via Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

There already has been plenty of changes with the Ohio State basketball team this year, but the most welcoming change is how the Buckeyes are shooting their free throws. Last year Ohio State shot free throws at just a 68.2 percent clip, which was fourth-worst in the Big Ten. Now as the Buckeyes jump back into conference play tonight, Ohio State is 73.3 percent from the charity stripe, which is fifth-best in the conference.

One big reason for the improvement from the foul line is the return of Keita Bates-Diop, who missed most of last season due to injuries. The junior is shooting 81.3 percent from the free throw line, which is third-best on the team. Bates-Diop has shot 54 free throws this season, which is second on the team.

If Ohio State continues this pace at the free throw line, they’ll have their best season from the charity stripe in the last 16 seasons, when they shot 71.8 percent from the foul line. Also, if the Buckeyes keep up their solid shooting at the foul line, they could also close out games they might not have over the past few years, and find themselves in the NCAA Tournament after missing the last two.

On Monday morning the 2018 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be announced live on SportsCenter. Ohio State will be trying to add to their heavy Hall of Fame occupation, as they have three nominees on this year’s ballot.

Keith Byars will trying to join Ohio State running backs such as Archie Griffin, Eddie George and Vic Janowicz in the College Football Hall of Fame. Byars ran for 3,200 yards at Ohio State, and was the 1984 Big Ten MVP.

Fullback Jim Otis was a member of the 1968 national championship team, and was named a First Team All-American in 1968. Otis led Ohio State in rushing in three different seasons, with his best total coming in 1969 when he rushed for 1,027 yards.

Chris Ward won four Big Ten title during his time in Columbus, and was named First Team All-Big Ten three times. In 1976 and 1977, Ward was named a First Team All-American. Ward was a part of the offensive line that blocked for Archie Griffin during his second Heisman Trophy campaign in 1975.

Ohio State currently has 25 players and six coaches in the College Football Hall of Fame. The last inductee into the Hall of Fame from Ohio State was Tom Cousineau in 2016. If any Buckeyes are inducted into the Hall of Fame, it is likely only one will be, as Ohio State hasn’t had multiple inductees in the same year since 1971 when Francis Schmidt and Bill Willis were inducted together.

The Buckeyes beat out Big Ten foe Penn State for the Under Armour All-American.

Despite always having to fight off some of the best out-of-state programs in the country, having the best instate prospects stay home has always been a top priority for Urban Meyer and the Ohio State coaching staff.

Keeping schools such as Penn State, USC, Oregon, and Alabama at bay, Meyer and crew just did that by landing a commitment from one of the most sought after prospects Ohio has to offer.

After recently signing 21 high school prospects during the early signing period, Cleveland Heights four-star, weakside defensive end Tyreke Smith has announced he too plans to continue his playing days and education at The Ohio State University.

Verbally committing to the Buckeyes live at the Under Armour All-America game held at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida, Smith has a skill set that could find him in the mix to crack a very thin defensive end depth chart when he arrives in Columbus.

Using his 6’3 and 260-pound frame, Smith, the fourth rated weakside defensive end, and 60th overall recruit, in the class of 2018 according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, has showcased his ability to rush the quarterback time and time again on the high school level.

As a senior at Cleveland Heights, the newest Buckeye pledge accounted for 70 total tackles, and 11 quarterback sacks, while also hauling in eight receptions for 192 yards and four touchdowns at tight end for the Mac Stephens-coached Tigers.

Building a pipeline into the Tigers’ program, Smith will join another Cleveland Heights alum at Ohio State, as his former high school teammate Jaylen Harris just finished his true freshman season as a wide receiver with the Cotton Bowl Champion Buckeyes.

Keep your eyes peeled as the Land-Grant Holy Land recruiting team will have more on Tyreke Smith and his pledge to the Buckeyes soon.

The Cougars’ defensive coordinator is a Grove City native.

As of next Tuesday, Jan. 9—the day after the 2017 season officially ends— the NCAA will allow FBS programs to add a 10th assistant coach to their staffs, and, as was rumored last month, FOX’s Bruce Feldman is reporting that Washington State defensive coordinator Alex Grinch will be taking Ohio State’s extra slot.

SOURCES: #WAZZU’s Alex Grinch is heading to #OhioState as the Buckeyes new Co-defensive coordinator. He did a phenomenal job in Pullman and the #MountUnion product is now heading home to work for OSU.

— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) January 4, 2018

Grinch is from Grove City, Ohio and won three NCAA Division III National Championships as a member of the storied Mount Union football program, so joining the Buckeye staff will be a homecoming for the coach.

In his time leading the Cougars’ defense, Grinch has had success turning the unit around and helping Wazzu become a competitor in the Pac-12. Since taking over as DC in 2015, WSU has gone from being outside of the top-100 in both scoring and yards per play to being in the top-50 for both, including finishing 16th in total defense this season.

In addition to turning around entire defenses, Grinch has also been instrumental in developing top-line defenders, including All-Pac-12 DBs Shalom Luani and Jalen Thompson.

If these reports do prove to be correct, the Buckeyes are adding an incredibly talented coach-on-the-rise to Greg Schiano’s defensive staff.

The Walsh Jesuit alum will have three years of eligibility remaining.

During last month’s early signing period, Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer tap danced around questions about how many scholarships were available for the traditional February signing day. Meyer’s hesitance to answer was in part due to the Jan. 15 NFL Draft declaration deadline, but also because of the possibility of current OSU players transferring.

Today, Buckeye offensive lineman Jack Wohlabaugh announced that he would be transferring to continue his playing career at Duke. After completing his redshirt freshman season, Wohlabaugh had yet to see the field for the Scarlet and Gray.

Excited for what the future holds! pic.twitter.com/iXx1xXPqWu

— Jack Wohlabaugh (@JackWohlabaugh) January 4, 2018

The Cuyahoga Falls native came into OSU as the 30th best offensive guard recruit in the 2016 recruiting class, and the 18th best player in Ohio. After sitting out a year, he will have three years of eligibility remaining in Durham.

The exact number of scholarships remaining for the 2018 Buckeyes is still in flux as the NFL deadline looms a week-and-a-half way. However, Meyer and co. have already secured two National Letters of Intent from 2018 O-lineman Max Wray and Matthew Jones.
