The OSU coach wants a fitting send off for a senior class that includes one of the best Buckeye athletes of all time.

The No. 2 Ohio State wrestling program has set the bar high for this weekend’s dual meet against perennial national powerhouse, No. 4 Iowa Hawkeyes. The team’s coach, Tom Ryan, has challenged fans to set an all new attendance record for an indoor dual on Saturday at the Schottenstein Center. As the final home meet of the season, this will mark the final opportunity for fans to see Olympic gold medalist Kyle Snyder compete on campus in his career.

Snyder will be joined in the Senior Day festivities by reigning 174 lbs. Big Ten champion and three-time All-American Bo Jordan and the reigning Big Ten Wrestler and USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week (as well as 2015 NCAA and three-time B1G champ) Nathan Tomasello.

CALLING ALL BUCKEYES: The largest indoor crowd to ever watch a college Dual was in 2013 when 15,996 attended! Let’s BREAK THE INDOOR RECORD at the Schott this Sun, Jan 21 @ 3:30. Lets send our seniors @Bobo_Jordan @Snyder_man45 @_NA_T0 out in style. #positiveinfinity

— Thomas Ryan (@Buckeye158) January 18, 2018

The current attendance record is held by Penn State, who hosted in-state rival Pitt on Dec. 8, 2013. According to Ryan, last year’s meet against PSU at the Shott drew 15,388 fans, just a few hundred shy of the record.

The meet against the Hawkeyes will begin at 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Jan. 21, and while Ryan would prefer that you were at Value City Arena, if you can’t be, the dual will be broadcast on BTN. In their 2016 dual, Iowa beat the Buckeyes 21-13.

The wrestling Buckeyes will still have five more regular season duals after Iowa, including one at Graham High School in St. Paris, OH (the alma mater of team members Bo and Micah Jordan).

Marquez Beason is a dynamic WR/DB in the 2019 class.

As is, the Ohio State Buckeyes have a stacked recruiting class for 2018—and it may get even better on Friday if Tyler Friday commits to the program. But like any program on the lookout for future talent, it’s never too early to send out offers.

A Star in the Lone Star State

On Wednesday, the Buckeyes took a step in the right direction in securing one of the top athletes in the 2019 class. Four-star wide receiver/cornerback Marquez Beason (Dallas / Bishop Dunne) is that athlete, and he’s one of the top talents out of Texas for next year’s recruiting class.

He made the Scarlet and Gray offer known via Twitter.

— ¹ (@Ezmoneyquez) January 17, 2018

Beason is considered the 83rd best prospect in his class, as well as the sixth best athlete and 10th best player in Texas, according to the 247sports composite.

Since the start of 2018, four schools have made offers to the Dallas standout. Louisiana Tech, Oregon, Washington State and OSU are those schools, and they join over 30 programs who have made it known that they want Beason.

As things stand, the 247sports crystal ball sees the two Red River Rivalry schools as the frontrunners for the elite prospect. While only five total predictions have been made, four of them point to the Texas Longhorns being the early leader for Beason; the Oklahoma Sooners received one vote—with that vote coming back in November 2017.

There is still plenty of time left for Ohio State to gain ground in the recruitment of Beason. If anything happens, we’ll keep you posted.

Walk-on offer and visit

Beason wasn’t the only one that got noticed by the Buckeyes. One recruit got an offer from OSU, while another one took a visit.

Lloyd McFarquhar (South Euclid, OH / Charles F. Brush High School) is a 2018 prospect that received a preferred walk-on spot at Ohio State. Like Beason, McFarquhar used Twitter to celebrate the news.

Honored and Beyond Blessed to receive an Preferred Walk-on offer from The Ohio State pic.twitter.com/nntm0ouJqb

— Lloyd McFarquhar (@_11savage) January 17, 2018

While McFarquhar just received his offer, another recruit with a preferred walk-on offer took a visit to OSU. Three-star 2018 wide receiver Xavier Johnson (Cincinnati, OH / Summit Country Day School) took a picture, and tweeted out that he was on a visit.

Had a great visit today with the buckeyes!! pic.twitter.com/Km0eAUcMjE

— Xavier Johnson (@J5Xavier) January 18, 2018

Back on Jan. 12, Johnson received his preferred walk-on offer. Already, he holds eight offers, with Cincinnati being one of the schools. Within a week, he went from getting an offer to taking a visit to Ohio State; that seems to bode well for the Buckeyes if they are looking for another receiver to add into the fold.

It was a nail-biter, but the Buckeyes held on late.

In the unfamiliar confines of the Allstate Arena is Rosemont, Ill., the No. 22 Ohio State Buckeyes (16-4, 7-0) knocked off the Northwestern Wildcats (11-9, 2-5), 71-65. The darlings of the Big Ten last season, the ‘Cats went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, but this season, they have struggled to replicate the things that made them successful last year.

With their seventh conference victory on the season, the Buckeyes have already equaled their total B1G wins from the 2016-2017 season. This one wasn’t easy, or pretty, especially early on for the Buckeyes. After looking nearly perfect over the last three games, OSU struggled from the field and failed to take care of the ball more than they have since the early games of the season.

The leading candidate for conference player of the year, Keita Bates-Diop didn’t have his best game of the season, but fortunately, Holtmann’s squad was able to use a team-effort to keep NU at bay, despite a furious rally late in the second half.

Down 6-0 early, the Buckeyes went 0-5 from the floor to open the action until Bates-Diop started the OSU scoring with a bank shot in the lane. Northwestern hit their first three shots from the field, and senior forward Gavin Skelly paced the Wildcats with seven early points.

However, as the Buckeyes got back into the game, they were led by their veterans Bates-Diop and Jae’Sean Tate. While neither team shot particularly well early, the OSU leaders combined for nine of the team’s first 11 points.

The early going was a bit sloppy for both teams, as they combined for eight turnovers (four apiece) in the first 10 minutes of the game. Ohio state freshman Musa Jallow had two early on, not exactly justifying his playing time, and he sat for the rest of the first half.

The Buckeyes took their first lead of the night following another NU turnover that led to a C.J. Jackson fast-break, old-fashioned three-point play. With the converted free-throw, OSU went up 17-15.

From there, OSU extended its lead to 21-15, leading NU head coach Chris Collins to call a timeout just inside of seven minutes in the half. On the first play back, Scottie Lindsey threw down a monstrous two-handed dunk after a back-door bounce-pass from Vic Law perfectly placed between two Buckeye defenders.

Despite the poor shooting and the careless ball-handling, OSU built a double-digit lead at 31-21. Unlike in many of the games this season, Bates-Diop did not turn in a game-defining performance in the first half. Instead, seven different Buckeyes combined for 12 field goals. Kaleb Wesson, Tate, and Jackson led the Buckeyes with six points apiece. KBD, the leading scorer in the conference, had only five. Ohio State led 33-25 at the half.

Skelly was the top man for NU with nine after 20 minutes, followed by Lindsey with eight, and Law with seven. The Buckeyes worked their way to 40.7 percent (12-29) from the field in the first 20 minutes, while NU went 10-27 (34.6%). The big difference was that OSU led the second-chance point battle 8-0.

As the second half began, OSU senior Kam Williams hit a deep-two and a three to expand the Buckeyes’ lead to 11, 38-27. However, as the Wildcats began to turn up the defensive pressure, including throwing in a trapping zone at times, they continued to cut into the lead, getting it down to 39-31 before Tate hit a reverse layup right before the under-16 timeout, and Jackson hit a three-pointer shortly thereafter. However, with neither team playing all that well, the game never felt like it was out of hand.

— Ohio State on BTN (@OhioStateOnBTN) January 18, 2018

That was until the Buckeyes went on a run hitting five straight buckets, from five different players, including Andrew Dakich’s second triple of the game and a sweet reverse layup by Bates-Diop, which put OSU up 51-36.

As the half progressed, both teams found their shooting strokes, and Micah Potter had his best game of the season by far. After picking up two fouls in the first half, Potter finally appeared to be healthy as he got to double-figures for the first time on the season. In fact, the sophomore was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor, and led the Buckeyes’ scoring effort with 13.

For their part, the ‘Cats stayed in the game by finding their stroke from deep. NU hit four threes in a five minute period in the second half, after connecting only twice from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.

After an air-balled corner three attempt by Jackson, Law hit a jumper that got NU to within seven points. Then on the ‘Cats’ next possession, after a Tate layup, Law hit a triple to cut the OSU lead to 68-62.

The teams traded turnovers, as Dakich stole it from Lindsey, then NU’s backcourt pressure led to Andrew Wesson throwing the ball straight into the Wildcats’ bench. A Jackson brick by led directly to a Lindsey three-pointer to get the game to 68-65.

With :26.8 left in the game, Jackson converted on two free-throws to give the Buckeyes a five-point lead. On the next possession, Jackson hit the front-end of a 1-and-1, then collected the rebound on his missed free-throw to end the game in favor of OSU.

The Buckeyes will return to the hardwood on Saturday, as they travel to the most famous arena on Earth, Madison Square Garden, to take on the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The game will tip at noon ET and will be broadcast on BTN, and is part of the annual Super Saturday Hoops & Hockey Doubleheader. The Gophers and Michigan State will take to the ice in the nightcap.

MotS&G Ohio State Basketball: Becoming the Hunted

Ohio State Basketball: Becoming the Hunted
Jesse

On Sunday, January 7th 2018, the Ohio State Men’s Basketball team defeated the top ranked Michigan State Spartans. When asked about the upset, OSU’s coach, Chris Holtmann, responded, “It is hard to win on the road, especially when you have that kind of number by your name. You get a different look from teams.” That ‘number’ he was referring to was the tiny 1 that could be seen next to Michigan State’s name throughout the game’s broadcast, and the point he was making was that, when people know you’re the best, your opponents play you harder.

Coach Holtmann knew this fact from experience, himself watching his own Buckeyes give the AP’s number 1 ranked team in America all it could handle, and then some.

From the beginning of the season, when they were selected by some to finish as low as 14th in the Big Ten (out of 14), this undervalued and overlooked team had been playing with a chip on their shoulders.

In fact, when asked whether OSU’s quick conference start surprised him, Senior Jae’Sean Tate told the press that he and the other players “always remind ourselves that we were last picked in the Big Ten… and I think that has really been a key to our success.” This slight drove them to become a team that played with ferocity—that played their tough and scrappy game no matter the opponent.

They were hunters.

As far as any of their opponents knew, this was a team of misfits—a roster filled to the brim with walk-ons, transfers, busts and guys who just couldn’t stay healthy; but from the beginning of the season, they started proving people wrong.

In an early season matchup against a tournament-level Butler team, they showed flashes of dominance that belied their humble exterior, but a last second comeback by the Bulldogs kept OSU in the shadows. Another opportunity for some notoriety came in the ACC-B1G Challenge, but, once again, a late-game collapse against the now-ranked Clemson Tigers stole the spotlight away. They had some losses, but they were hunters still.

Luckily, after missing two other opportunities at signature wins against Gonzaga and UNC, their prey had finally arrived. It came in the form of the aforementioned Spartans, a team on a 14-game win streak, standing atop the College Basketball world. Ohio State went into that Sunday night showdown the hunters, but they came out the hunted.

A home game against Maryland in which they were down by 9 at the 11 minute mark of the 1st half proved that they were no longer a team that would be overlooked. At the end of the game, Maryland’s Coach Turgeon said, “We knew we weren’t getting the same shot that Michigan State got at the start of the game,” and so the Terrapins came out swinging. The Buckeyes didn’t have that same fire to start off, the way they had against the Spartans, but after a quick timeout by Coach Holtmann, Maryland got buried, going from up nine to eight down in less than 4 minutes, and that was pretty much the end of the game.

After surviving their first test as the hunted, the Buckeyes had to go on the road against Rutgers, a physical, defensive team that had just barely failed to do what Ohio State did in knocking off Michigan State. This time, though, the Buckeyes would have no home crowd. They would be playing on regional television in a game that Rutgers would surely be up for after such a great performance in the previous week. However, once again, the Buckeyes were up to the challenge, beating Rutgers 66-46. Holtmann said after the game that they “are going to have some people that will play with a different edge” and that they would “see if we are good enough to manage that.” Another test passed. Another hunt escaped.

Of course, for all of their impressive defensive statistics, Rutgers is currently 1-5 in conference and tied for 12th in the standings. Tonight, the Buckeyes face off against a much better team in their arena and on their court. Northwestern, a team that made the tournament last year and then had the nerve to return 4 starters, has been slumping for the better part of this season, but they do have the talent to compete with Ohio State. The game between these teams is going to be Big Ten basketball at its finest, and the Buckeyes are going to have to grind it out.

OSU has proven that they have the goods to play with the big boys. They have proven that they can come back at home and take care of the conference’s not-so-good teams on the road. Now they’ve got to take it one step further to prove they deserve to be at the top of the Big Ten. They have to beat a good team on the road when that team is preparing specifically for them. This is just the next test of many to come as they seek to close out the season strongly.

Tonight they have a chance to pass another milestone for this once-unheralded Buckeyes team and to add to their tournament resume, only this time, they’re the ones with the number by their name.

Ohio State basketball sees a cautionary tale in Northwestern

usa_today_10544207.0.jpg

Also, how does J.T. Barrett’s strong East-West Shrine Game practices impact his draft stock?

“The question, which will start to be answered Wednesday, is how a similar reversal in fortunes will affect the Buckeyes. Winners of five straight and 10 of their last 11 games, they climbed into the national rankings for the first time since the tail end of Jae’Sean and Keita Bates-Diop’s freshman seasons.”

- Adam Jardy, The Columbus Dispatch

As the No. 22 Ohio State Buckeyes travel to Rosemont, Ill. tonight, not only will they be looking to remain perfect in conference play this season, but they will also be facing off against a cautionary tale in the Northwestern Wildcats.

Last year, Northwestern was the darling of the conference, going 21-10 and making the Big Dance for the first time in school history. However, as the Buckeyes come calling, the Chris Collins-coached Wildcats are sputtering at 11-8, despite retaining the majority of their NCAA Tournament squad.

For OSU coach Chris Holtmann, the situation is somewhat different as his shocking turn-around of the team has come in year one on the job. However, like Collins, the new head Buckeye will need to guard against complacency as his squad sees its stature rise.

“You can’t lose sight of the things that you did when you were the hunter, when you were trying to gain that respect, that chip on your shoulder, that edge, that competitive spirit,” Collins said on the B1G teleconference this week.

Whether or not the Buckeyes are able to maintain the level of competitiveness that got them into the Top-25 for the first time in three years throughout the rest of the regular season is yet to be seen. However, Holtmann seems to understand that now that they have proven that they are contenders in the Big Ten, the rest of the conference slate will likely become even more challenging than it already would have been.

“I think our guys are going to need to be prepared for that,” Holtmann said. “We’ll see if we can handle that. We’ve got a really full week ahead of us, but given where we’re at, that’s to be expected. We’re going to get a lot of peoples’ best shot.”

J.T. Barrett has been one of the early stars at the start of the 2018 East-West Shrine Game Week.”

- Tim Bielik, cleveland.com

Look, I would bet dollars to doughnuts that J.T. Barrett will never be an All-Pro quarterback in the NFL. However, I certainly would not bet against his ability to turn himself into a QB with a long and productive career at the next level, even if it is mostly as a sturdy backup. With his years of starting experience against— and with— top-tier talent, working with multiple offensive coordinators, and his inherent leadership and football IQ, the three-time OSU captain has plenty to offer an NFL team.

That being typed, I also wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up playing in Canada, or on Ohio State or Texas’ coaching staff next year as a graduate assistant. The rest of this week, and then the eventual combine and pro day, will be big in determining what happens next for #16, but no matter how well he does in these controlled environments, scouts will also have to contend with his more than three years of film as a starting quarterback. How they reconcile his performance in a zone-read offense versus what he shows in drills and pro-style exhibition game offenses, is yet to be determined.

Also apparently doing well in Shrine Game practices are Damon Webb and Chris Worley. Both are drawing interest from scouts and looking to move up in the draft rankings.

B1G Player of the Year front-runner?@OhioStateHoops' @KBD_33 is playing extremely good basketball right now, and the numbers highlight his outstanding efficiency on offense: pic.twitter.com/khHMfTVFQC

— Ohio State on BTN (@OhioStateOnBTN) January 17, 2018

If you’ve watched the basketball Buckeyes play at all this year, you know that Keita Bates-Diop is a stud, but when you break down the advanced statistics as the above BTN video does, it is mind-blowing to realize just how efficient KBD has been.

The redshirt junior is averaging 1.2 points per personal possession on the season, but in the first six games of OSU’s Big Ten schedule, he’s actually improved upon that to 1.3 per, and that includes games against two of the other three B1G teams in the top 20 of KenPom’s ratings.

My grandfather always told me, “Expect the worst, and hope for the best,” so I’m not going to hold my breath that KBD will be able to maintain this improved level of productivity and efficiency throughout the entire conference schedule, but, assuming he stays healthy, he’s given us no reason to expect otherwise this season.

The Buckeyes look to keep their winning streak alive against the Wildcats tonight.

Ohio State basketball is loving 2018. The Buckeyes have won their first four games of the new year, and are now 6-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2010-11 season. This week, they finally cracked the AP Poll top-25 for the first time in three years, and come into the game ranked No. 22 nationally.

Now, the surging Buckeyes face Northwestern in a late game tonight. It is the second road game in a three-game stretch away from Columbus.

The Buckeyes are 15-4 on the season and 6-0 in conference play, tied with Purdue for the top spot. Sunday, Ohio State demolished Rutgers in Piscataway, leading the Scarlet Knights by as much as 30 points on their way to a 68-46 victory. Junior forward Keita Bates-Diop once again led his team with 20 points on the night, while freshman center Kaleb Wesson and senior guard Kam Williams also turned in double-digit performances.

Meanwhile, Northwestern is 11-8 on the season, including 2-4 in conference play. The Wildcats most recently fell to Indiana 66-46 Sunday, with junior forward Vic Law leading the team with nine points. Overall, they’ve been struggling in the new year, going 1-3 so far in 2018.

Head coach Chris Collins has been with the Wildcats since 2013 after spending 13 seasons as an assistant at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski. In more than four seasons at the helm, Collins has amassed an 84-68 overall record, and, last season, took Northwestern to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. Northwestern returns four starters from last year’s squad, including Law, senior point guard Bryant McIntosh, senior guard Scottie Lindsey and junior center Dererk Pardon. Overall, it has been a bit of a letdown this season for the Wildcats after last season’s epic run.

The Buckeyes are 808-713 all time versus teams from the Big Ten, and 117-46 all-time against Northwestern. However, they are looking for vengeance after the Wildcats squeaked out a win the last time the two teams faced off. It was the first time that Northwestern had won in Columbus since 1977. Though Ohio State owns a 48-31 advantage on the road at Northwestern, this game is set to be played at Allstate Arena in Rosemont while Welsh-Ryan Arena is being renovated this season.

Numbers to know

No. 16

The Buckeyes began the season as the No. 78 team in the country according to KenPom. They have moved up more than 60 spots throughout the season and sit now at No. 16--the third-highest team in the Big Ten behind Purdue (No. 2) and Michigan State (No. 6). Moreover, three of the four teams who have beaten the Buckeyes sit ahead of Ohio State in the rankings, and the lone other team, Butler, is still inside the top-50. While things will certainly shift through the remainder of the season, these rankings show that the Buckeyes have not endured a truly bad loss this year, which bodes well for the team’s tournament resume. Northwestern, meanwhile, is 76th in the ranking.

14

Keita Bates-Diop has been truly extraordinary this season for the Buckeyes, and has been the lifeblood that has fueled Chris Holtmann’s new squad. He has already won Big Ten Player of the Week honors three times this season, including for the past two weeks. Now, he is poised to enter the Ohio State record books as a member of the 1,000-point club. The junior forward needs just 14 points against Northwestern this evening to reach the mark. Bates-Diop would be the 55th player in program history to cross the 1,000-point threshold. Jae’Sean Tate joined this elite group at the end of last season and, with 1,332 points himself, is steadily climbing the all-time scoring list at Ohio State.

76.3%

Somehow it is not at all surprising that Northwestern has the best free throw percentage in the Big Ten, hitting more than 76 percent of their shots from the line. That mark is good for 29th in the NCAA. Ohio State commits more than 17 personal fouls per game, with Jae’Sean Tate and Kaleb Wesson are the worst offenders with 3.1 each per outing, so they will need to keep things under control to avoid giving the Wildcats free points from the line. Ohio State, meanwhile, is shooting 72.6 percent from the charity stripe this season, which is good for sixth in the Big Ten. While that mark is somewhat pedestrian, it is far better than where the Buckeyes were last year, when they finished the season hitting just over 68 percent of their free throws.

Cast of characters

Ohio State

Keita Bates-Diop

The three-time conference player of the week is also the Big Ten’s leading scorer on the season, averaging 20.3 points per game. He is shooting 52.6 percent from the field, including hitting 41 percent from three-point range, and is making more than 81 percent of his free throws. Bates-Diop has scored 20 points or greater in each of four games in 2018, including 20 points in the Buckeyes’ most recent outing at Rutgers. During that same stretch, the junior forward has had just two turnovers and six personal fouls despite playing at least 33 minutes per game. In his last two games, Bates-Diop was 8-of-15 from behind the arc. While KBD was left off the Wooden Award midseason watch list last week, he is still one of the top candidates for Big Ten Player of the Year honors.

Kaleb Wesson

The freshman center, who was Ohio’s Mr. Basketball last year, was inducted into the Westerville South Hall of Fame earlier this month. In his first year with the program, Wesson has made an immediate impact in his short time with the Buckeyes, even earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors back in December. He is averaging 11.2 points and five rebounds per game, and is shooting nearly 55 percent from the field. After coming off of the bench early, he has started 15 of 18 games for the Buckeyes this season. While Holtman has acknowledged that Wesson will need to lose some weight in the offseason and improve from a conditioning perspective, the head coach has been pleased with how far the freshman has come already.

Northwestern

Scottie Lindsey

The senior guard leads the Wildcats in scoring with 14 points per game, but managed just two against Indiana on 1-for-15 shooting from the field. Despite his high average, Lindsey has been highly inconsistent on the season, and is shooting under 38 percent on field goals. Prior to Northwestern’s loss to Indiana, Lindsey went off for a team-high 22-points. The senior recorded two points against No. 17 Oklahoma and none against Georgia Tech. Essentially, some teams have been able to effectively contain Lindsey, and containing Lindsey has proven an effective way to beat Northwestern. In the six games where the Wildcats’ leading scorer was held to 10 points or less, Northwestern is 1-5.

Bryant McIntosh

The senior point guard was out with a knee injury during Northwestern’s loss to Nebraska to open up 2018, but came back and set a school record with 16 assists in one game against Minnesota--all without committing a single turnover. His 2.5 assist-to-turnover ratios is one of the best in the Big Ten, and he is the best free throw shooter on the conference’s best free throw-shooting team, hitting 95 percent of his shots from the line. The senior is currently eighth in scoring in program history with 1,576 career points, and could move as high as the No. 6 spot with eight points tonight against the Buckeyes. McIntosh also has a program-record 655 career assists, which is also good for third in the country among active players.
