BOOOOOOM! Ohio’s top player in the 2020 class will stay home.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have picked up their second 2020 commitment in as many days, and it’s a massive one, both literally and figuratively. After picking up a pledge from Florida safety Lejond Cavazos yesterday, Cincinnati offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. joined in on the fun, too.


Johnson Jr. is, if not the top target for the Buckeyes in 2020, one of the top targets. The enormous, 6-foot-7, 285-pound tackle is a consensus five-star recruit, and will likely be one of the best player in his class by the time he signs in December 2020. Ranked No. 8 in the 247Sports composite rankings, Johnson Jr. is one of the highest ranked commits in the Urban Meyer era, along with Chase Young, Nick Bosa, Taron Vincent and Nicholas Petit-Frere.


In addition to the Buckeyes, Johnson Jr. had offers from just about every major program in the country, including Michigan, Florida State, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Stanford, Oklahoma, Penn State and USC.

Johnson Jr. is the third member of a 2020 class that could rival the best of all time for the Buckeyes. he joins fellow tackle Jake Wray, and the aforementioned Cavazos. The class should get another huge boost this weekend, as quarterback Jack Miller is set to commit on Sunday.

With back-to-back wins, Snyder becomes the third Ohio State wrestler to take home the Big Ten’s Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year award in the last four years.


Kyle Snyder continues to make history, become the first-ever two-time male recipient of the Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year award. Snyder is the only American to ever finish college as a three-time national champion, an Olympic gold medalist, and a two-time world champion.

To close out his Ohio State career, Snyder finished the season at 17-1, with his lone loss coming to Adam Coon of Michigan. Snyder was able to avenge the loss to Coon by beating him in both the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Championships. Seven of Snyder’s wins this season came over nationally-ranked opponents.

Ohio State has now won nine Big Ten Athlete of the Year awards since the inception of the honor in 1982, with six of those winners being male athletes and three of the winners being female athletes. With Snyder’s back-to-back wins, Ohio State wrestling has earned three of the last four Big Ten Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year awards, as Logan Stieber took home the honor in 2015.

Snyder wasn’t the only back-to-back winner of the Big Ten’s Athlete of the Year award, as Indiana swimming’s Lilly King won the Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year award for the second straight year in a row. The last Buckeye to take home that award was track and field’s Christina Manning in 2012. Jessica Davenport in 2007 and Ohio State volleyball player Laura Davis in 1995 were other Buckeye recipients of the award.

“Obviously you can only start five, so some of these guys that are really good aren’t going to start. But if they have a role to go in there and play and they’re needed at a certain time, that keeps the depth, that develops the cohesiveness, that’s all the things you want.”

Ohio State doesn’t just rebuild, it reloads. That has especially held true with the offensive line over the past few years. The Buckeyes have a couple holes to fill on the offensive line heading into this season, but Ohio State has plenty of talent to vie for those spots.

The Buckeyes will have some stability to build on, with Isaiah Prince and Michael Jordan returning as starters this season. Thayer Munford has made big strides since joining the program, and looks like he is in line to take over the left tackle position.

The biggest question for Ohio State heading into the 2018 is who is going to replace Billy Price at center. Fifth-year senior Brady Taylor is the favorite to take over the position vacated by Price, and any trepidation about Taylor stepping in at center should be eased by the fact that he has been able to learn behind back-to-back Rimington Award winners.

What makes this group of Ohio State offensive linemen scarier than in years past is the depth they possess. Early on in his coaching tenure in Columbus, it was no secret Urban Meyer was unhappy with the quality of depth of the offensive line. The same can’t be said these days, as the offensive line is loaded with talent. With a mixture of upperclassmen and highly-touted younger recruits, the Buckeye offensive line shouldn’t have much trouble opening holes for the running game and keeping new starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins clean.

“I think I can take a big step. Still doing the little things I do, because always I’m going to do whatever it takes to help the team win. Doing that and getting my shot more consistent and ball handling and playmaking, I think I can make a big step.”

One of the returning Ohio State basketball players that will be expected to take a big step forward this year is junior forward Andre Wesson. Last year at this time, Wesson was just an observer due to an undisclosed medical condition which kept him on the sidelines.

The time on the sidelines in the offseason left Wesson struggling to find his rhythm, which took until around Christmas to come back. Wesson was decidedly more active after the calendar turned to 2018, registering at least 18 minutes in each of the final 17 games of the season.

Not only will the Buckeyes be looking for more production from Wesson on the floor, but they’ll also be hoping he takes on more of a leadership role for a team that lost veterans Jae’Sean Tate and Keita Bates-Diop. While Wesson showed he could hold his own on the defensive end last season, this offseason he is working to improve on the offensive end. With younger brother Kaleb having already turned some heads for Ohio State in his freshman year, the rest of the Big Ten could have a big problem with the Wesson brothers if Andre is able to put his game together with a full offseason to work on it.

The Buckeyes are a real contender for the 4-star 2020 signal caller.

For the Ohio State Buckeyes, it’s been a very eventful calendar week on the recruiting trail. Last Friday was the signature Friday Night Lights recruiting event, which saw some of the top OSU targets make their way to Columbus. Since then, two commitments have come to the Bucks. One of them arrived on Sunday from four-star 2019 quarterback Dwan Mathis. Then, just yesterday, four-star safety Lejond Cavazos added his name to the growing list of 2020 prospects that are committing to Urban Meyer’s program.

But the hot recruiting week may get even hotter by the end of the upcoming weekend. Could another commitment be trending toward the Buckeyes?

Jack Miller (Scottsdale, AZ / Chaparral) is the prospect that many OSU followers are looking at as the next commitment to the 2020 class. On Wednesday afternoon, Miller announced on Twitter that he’s setting his commitment date for 1 p.m. CT/ 2 p.m. ET on July 1.


In the 2020 class, Miller comes in as the 47th best prospect, the third best pro-style QB, and third best prospect from Arizona, according to the 247sports composite. Nearly 20 schools have come knocking with scholarship offers for the 6-foot-4, 210-pounder—including the likes of Auburn, Alabama and Florida State.

Last week has been busy for the Scottsdale native; he took unofficial visits to Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Alabama. He also attended the Friday Night Lights camp at OSU, which may have helped the Buckeyes’ case to win the commitment of Miller.

With co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day leading his recruitment, things are looking very good for the Buckeyes in the eyes of many recruiting analysts. The 247sports crystal ball has a whopping 18 predictions in for Miller. Of those predictions, 17 of them point to Ohio State as the college Miller will choose, while one prediction is listed as “cloudy.”

If the Copper State star chooses OSU, he would become the third member of the ‘20 class, and would be the highest rated member of the three, using 247sports’ calculator. For OSU, a commitment from Miller would be the icing on the cake for a great recruiting week. Last Friday, there were still questions about OSU not getting a QB for 2019, and rolling the dice for a quality QB in the 2020 class—which would be a must. If Miller is added to the the QB room, then all questions about QB needs goes away for at least two seasons.

A target off the board


It’s worth mentioning that with Mathis flipping his commitment from Michigan State to Ohio State, and Miller on the verge of making his own commitment, the recruiting landscape shifted a bit.

Brian Maurer was a Buckeye QB target for 2019. An offer was sent out on June 23 right after he camped with the Scarlet and Gray at FNL. However, with the Bucks getting Mathis, Maurer essentially was off the board for the Bucks. Mid-morning Wednesday, the 6-foot-2.5 passer made it known on Twitter that he decided on a school.

For all of the talk since Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus about developing the “next Percy Harvin,” the Buckeyes have only had one dominant H-back, and that was Curtis Samuel. Coming into 2018, there are three players that should see touches from the position; converted wide receiver Parris Campbell will again be the starter, K.J. Hill— another former WR— will likely be his back-up, with running back turned special teams ace Demario McCall fighting for time as well.


However, there is another name that Buckeye fans should get used to “Ewwwing” and “Ahhhing” over that might see time at H-back depending on how things shake out this season: Jaelen Gill.

The Westerville product was the 30th-ranked player in the 2018 recruiting class, and had offers from dozens of major programs around the country. But, now that he’s on campus and preparing for his first season of collegiate football, Gill is doing everything that he can to improve himself.

“I watch my own film almost every day, not to glorify myself or anything,” the freshman told Ginn. “I just try to watch the smallest things. Even if it’s a good play or whatever, I’ll see if I could have done anything better and just look at footwork and all that stuff.”

The 6-foot-1, lightning-footed athlete says that Meyer has told him that he can be “as good or better than Harvin and Samuel.” Of course two factors for Gill (and all of the potential H-backs) when it comes to the position’s productivity this year will be how new quarterback Dwayne Haskins steps in to replace J.T. Barrett and how Ryan Day’s play-calling takes advantage of all of the Buckeyes’ weapons.

If the rotation seen last year is any indication, Meyer and company will likely feel free to rotate their cavalcade of skill position players into games, especially when the outcome is no longer in doubt. And, with the recent rule change allowing players to retain their redshirts even if they’ve played in four games, the options for how Gill could be used are many. Either way, if and when he does see the field for the Buckeyes, the impact could be electric.

“So, who makes the 2018 College Football Playoff? The safest bet involves some combination of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, Clemson, Oklahoma or Washington.”

Look, when it comes to predictions— whether its March Madness, the Oscars, or the College Football Playoff— it’s always smartest to go with chalk if you want to have the best outcome, but come on, Bender (I swear I won’t make a “Futurama” joke), have some guts here.

Of those seven legitimate options and Michigan, Bender went with Oklahoma, Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State for the CFP. That’s the ultimate “sticking with chalk” move, because those are the only four schools to have ever made the CFP multiple times. Bender then really rolls the dice and goes with ‘Bama and Clemson to meet in the playoffs for the fourth year in a row (does that make Clemson the Cavs?); this time in the Championship game for the third time in four years.

Now, of course this all makes logical sense, and he did stipulate that these picks were the “safest bet,” but where’s the fun in that? It’s not like pundits (sports, politics, weather, or whatever) are ever held accountable for their failed predictions, so you might as well go buck wild.

Call for UCF to win its second-straight national title, this time legitimately. Call for the Big Ten to have two teams make the CFP for the first time ever. Call for Bill Snyder to take Kansas State to a Big XII title and then the playoffs. We are six and a half months away from crowning a new college football champ, and more than a month away from programs opening up fall camp; there’s no need to be logical with your predictions. No one will remember who you picked in a couple of weeks anyway, so go crazy!

Oh, me? You’d like to know who I’m picking to go to the CFP this season? Hmmmmm, let me think. I’m gonna go with... Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Clemson. You’re welcome.

Like I mentioned above, we’ve still got some time before the college football season kicks off. In fact, it is just under 59 days until the first game of the season. So, it looks like our SBNation friends over at Every Day Should Be Saturday have decided to spend some of their slower summer days trolling Ohio State fans; as one apparently does.

“ActionCookbook” posted a satirical article today that implied that Ohio State fandom was something akin to a religious order that requires door-to-door evangelism. While I have been known to say, “From your mouth to Woody’s ears,” I do think that the characterization is a bit extreme, especially considering all of the loyal, level-headed Buckeye fans that frequent the pages of Land-Grant Holy Land, whom would never behave in a manner that would embarrass or tarnish the reputation of the fine institution that we all support.

So, on behalf of all Ohio State fans (alumni or otherwise), I take personal offense to the representation in the article, and hereby bite my thumb in its general direction. That being formally entered into the official record, I am all for every single joke at the expense of appropriately nicknamed “Dry Rot,” “Beaver,” and “Dutch Elm Disease.”
