MotS&G What to Expect: Linebackers

What to Expect: Linebackers
Trevor Arnold
via our good friends at Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Visit their fantastic blog and read the full article (and so much more) here

The Ohio State linebackers had some up and down moments during last season. The highlight of last season was the Michigan State game. The low point, sadly, was the game before against the Iowa Hawkeyes who absolutely torched us, and cost us a spot in the College Football Playoffs. A topic I could go on and on about because a certain team played Mercer last year, but I digress.

The 2018 season will feature players that had quite the roll in last season as backups, but played more and more as the season went along. Tuf Borland will most likely be the starting middle linebacker, as he is the best player for the job. However, he is coming off an Achilles injury where he missed all of spring ball. Hopefully, he comes back the same player, or even better than last year because this kid has talent. In the MSU game, he had 11 total tackles with 8 of them being solo and 1 sack.

If Borland can’t go or just loses the starting job, look for Baron Browning to be the next guy up. Browning was the No. 1 linebacker in the 2017 class, and was on the field during special teams last season. I expect Borland and Browning to play a lot this season back and forth, and having two guys with same level of skills is never a bad thing. Browning can also play outside linebacker, so if Borland does come back healthy, expect Browning to be on the field at both middle and outside linebackers.

Justin Hilliard, who lost his starting position to Borland last year, is the older player, but he has dealt with lingering injuries. If Borland or Browning can’t go Hilliard is looking to improve from last season, and the Buckeyes will need him to be his former 5-star self.

Malik Harrison is expected to be the starting Strongside Linebacker. Harrison got in games last year in garbage time, and to give the other guys some rest for a play or two, but he did show what he can do, especially in the MSU game. Dante Booker will most likely be the backup even though he chose to comeback, and forego the NFL Draft. Booker didn’t have the best of season last year, and that wasn’t entirely his fault. He has been injured almost his whole career at Ohio State. He wants to come back and show everyone, including the scouts, what he really can do.

Weakside Linebacker is the big question mark for the Buckeyes. Replacing 3rd round draft pick Jerome Baker is no easy task. But expect Keandre Jones to be the starting linebacker with Pete Werner to back up. Both players have seen plenty of time on special teams, but not much action at the linebacker position. Jones is the the older player which is why I’m giving him the starting job, but Werner and Browning will be coming for the spot.

After the Iowa game, Urban and Greg Schiano made some linebacker changes for the Michigan State, and they payed off big time. Putting in the young guys really helped the Buckeyes defense come alive. I expect this season to be much better at the linebacker position, and they will help get the Buckeyes off the field on the 3rd down plays. The Buckeyes have a history of great linebackers, and this season should be no exception. With 4 and 5 star players all over the field the Buckeyes should have plenty of depth and talents to keep the NFL linebacker talent alive.

Landing the five-star point guard is kind of a big deal

Is everybody enjoying the Chris Holtmann era yet? A little over a year after being hired to take over for Thad Matta at Ohio State, Holtmann has exceeded expectations once again today. After an awe-inspiring first season that saw the Buckeyes return to the NCAA Tournament, finish second in the Big Ten, and produce a Big Ten Player of the Year, the future looked bright.

An excellent 2018 class, headlined by future stars like Luther Muhammad and Jaedon LeDee added more to the hype. Landing five-star Cleveland forward Alonzo Gaffney back in April felt like a sign of things to come in the 2019 class, and today, Holtmann blew the whole damn roof off, as five-star point guard D.J. Carton committed to Ohio State.

We’ll get into what makes Carton so good, and what this means for the future in Columbus, but I think it’s important to reflect on just how fast this has all happened. In July of 2016, Ohio State was coming off of a 21-14 season and a second round NIT loss to Florida. They returned a lot of players, but their recruiting class wasn’t anything special.

In May of 2017, Ohio State was in an even darker place. They’d gone 17-15, held just one commitment in the 2017 class, and had lost a commitment from 2018 five-star Darius Bazley just a month earlier. That was 14 months ago. It took Chris Holtmann 14 months to pull Ohio State up from their worst season in 14 years and back to one of the nation’s most exciting programs.

It may be Carton’s commitment that puts them over the top and returns them to college basketball’s elite class, like they were in 2006 and from 2009 to 2012. A new golden age may be upon us. What does the new face of that movement bring to Columbus?

On the court

Carton is exactly what you’d expect from a modern five-star point guard. He’s a fantastic athlete, with elite quickness, straight-line speed, and an ability to dunk, despite being just 6-foot-1. That athleticism makes him ideal for what Holtmann wants in a point guard. Because of how fast he is, he can blow by defenders and finish at the hoop with ease.

However, Carton isn’t just an offensive player. He’s got great lateral quickness as well, and can stay in front of anybody that he’s guarding. He doesn’t have elite hands, and he’ll never be an Aaron Craft-level defender, but he’ll never be a liability. He’s more than capable of guarding at a Big Ten level, and he has the potential to develop into an elite defender. That’s all OSU needs.

Offensively, it’s a much different story. Carton is one of the best scorers in the country, and will bring a ton of skill and ability to Ohio State. He’s got elite handles, and the explosiveness to make him nearly impossible to guard off of the dribble. Once he gets to the hoop, he’s a great finisher, making acrobatic layups over bigger defenders with ease and consistency.

If finishing isn’t his best ability, passing definitely is. Carton might be as good of a passer as D’Angelo Russell was when he was at Ohio State. He’s capable of throwing great lead passes, can drive and kick with accuracy, and loves running in transition, launching cross-court bounce passes like it’s nothing. He’s a great court general, which Ohio State hasn’t had since Russell.

The only real thing I can find wrong with his offense is his shooting, but even that isn’t a big issue. He’s got a nice stroke, and can knock down threes, he just has some consistency issues. That’ll come with age, and Ohio State doesn’t need him to be a knockdown shooter by any means. I think he’ll hover around 35% from three, and that’s all they need from a point guard.

At 6-foot-1, 189 pounds, Carton’s a bit on the small side, but this isn’t the NBA. I don’t think it’ll be an issue at Ohio State. With how strong he is, and how much intensity he plays with, I think he’ll be more than willing and capable to face off against bigger players, and will likely come out on top against them more often than not.

In the class

Ohio State’s 2019 class could be one of the best in school history. Carton and Gaffney are ranked 21st and 30th respectively at 247Sports, and just those two puts Ohio State at fourth nationally in the team rankings. With one or two more spots still open, this class will get even better, and will almost certainly finish in the top five.

Where do those last commitments come from? Well, the main target left for Ohio State is absolutely Illinois power forward E.J. Liddell. They’re in a battle with Missouri for his pledge, but landing another top player in Carton will go a long way in Liddell’s recruitment. These top recruits all know each other, and playing with other elite prospects is a big deal in college basketball recruiting.

Outside of him, it’s a bit of a blur. If Ohio State does want a fourth man in this class, it’ll probably be a big man, and that could come from a number of guys. Right now, the two most likely seem to be Minnesota forward Zeke Nnaji or Indiana center Trayce Jackson-Davis, though Ohio State doesn’t lead for either at this point.

If they can’t get back into it with either of those guys, they may reevaluate to try to find another big, or they may just roll with three in 2019, if they do end up landing Liddell. Whatever they do, this is going to be a massively important class at Ohio State, and when looking at everyone that’ll be back, it’s not hard to see Ohio State competing for a title in 2019 when Carton and Gaffney arrive.

This is, arguably, the biggest recruit secured in the Chris Holtmann.

The Ohio State Buckeyes basketball program got a big BOOOM on Saturday afternoon as 2019 five-star point guard DJ Carton (Bettendorf, IA / Bettendorf) committed to the program. Carton made the decision known on Twitter.

B U C K E Y E N A T I O N⚪pic.twitter.com/A8T26fA7W1

— DJ Carton (@DJCarton) July 14, 2018

Indiana and Michigan were the other schools in the running for the No. 2 PG in the ‘19 class. Leading up to today’s announcement, it appeared that the Wolverines were the program to beat, as a majority of the 247sports crystal ball predictions seemed to lean toward Carton going to Ann Arbor for his college days.

However, after taking an official visit to OSU early this week, things changed—and Carton felt that OSU was the place for him. With this commitment, the Buckeyes’ 2019 class now have two members: Carton and four-star small forward Alonzo Gaffney.

Carton also held offers from Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa, Xavier, USC, Marquette, Missouri, and more. Carton is a five-star prospect, and the second-rated point guard in the country according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. He is the best player from Iowa in the class, and the 21st-ranked player in the country.

To say this this is a big commitment would be an understatement. Ohio State has been searching for a true 2019 point guard for months now, and they managed to find one of the nation’s best. Pairing Carton with fellow 2019 five-star Alonzo Gaffney will make for one of the most dangerous one-two punches since Jared Sullinger and Aaron Craft were in Columbus.

Land Grant Holy-Land will have more on this commitment soon. You can watch Carton’s highlights below.

Plus, the Buckeye softball team adds a new assistant, and

TV Guide: On Sunday, July 15 at 8 p.m. ET, @BigTenNetwork will debut an enhanced episode of an @OhioStateFB Classic: Ohio State at Texas – 9/9/06. @JLaurinaitis55 will break down the No. 1 ranked Buckeyes' dominating 24-7 win over No. 2 Texas, the defending national champions.

— Jerry Emig (@BuckeyeNotes) July 13, 2018

If you’re looking for something to watch on Sunday evening, the Big Ten Network is airing the Ohio State vs. Texas game from 2006 at 8 p.m. ET. with commentary from some of the players on the roster.

In addition to James Laurinaitis breaking down the big win over the Longhorns, other Buckeyes like Malcolm Jenkins, Ted Ginn Jr., and Anthony Gonazalez will share their memories of the game that helped put them on the path to the 2007 BCS National Championship game.

I remember the 2006 rematch and revenge vividly— particularly because the heartbreaking loss in the first game of the OSU-UT series ruined my plans in 2005 — in which I instead of celebrating with my friends, I sat in my car crying on Chittenden Ave. for about an hour before leaving campus altogether for the night.

After being embarrassed on our home turf the year before, Ohio State was extra motivated in Austin in 2006.

The Buckeyes got on the board first, but the Longhorns tied things up late in the second half. Refusing to go into halftime tied at seven, quarterback Troy Smith tossed a 29-yard pass to Teddy Ginn, who ran it into the endzone to put OSU up 14-7 heading into the half.

Ohio State would add a field goal in the third quarter, and put the nail in the coffin with a 2-yard rushing TD by Antonio Pittman with six minutes left to play in the fourth. The Buckeyes didn’t let Texas back on the board after their first-half touchdown, and the clock ran out with Ohio State claiming a 24-7 win.

(Is it football season yet? I could really use a Buckeye touchdown to celebrate.)

“Ohio State softball head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly has announced the addition of Jordan Clark as an assistant coach to her staff.”

-Ohio State Athletics

Before she was among the coaching ranks, new assistant Jordan Clark was a player for Kovach Schoenly at Miami (OH) from 2009-12. Her collegiate career included being a two-time captain, two-time Mid-American Conference performer and the 2012 recipient of the MAC’s Nan Harvey Sportsmanship Award.

“I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity to join Ohio State and the softball staff,” said Clark. “I want to say thank you to Coach Schoenly and the administration for giving me this amazing opportunity to join the Buckeye family. Ohio State is a top athletic and academic institution with a powerhouse brand that competes at the national level year after year. The people, pride and tradition that makes up the softball community are truly one of a kind. I can’t wait to get started!”

Clark is joining her former coach in Columbus after a three-year stint as a volunteer assistant coach for Arkansas — a team she helped to the NCAA Tournament in both 2017 and 2018, with the Razorbacks making it to the Super Regionals this past season.

“Jordan brings knowledge, competitiveness and enthusiasm to our program,” said Kovach Schoenly. “She is a dynamic coach with the ability to help in various aspects of the game and recruiting. She has learned from a staff that I deeply respect. Our program is aiming for the Super Regionals and World Series.”

The new Buckeye assistant was the first base coach for Arkansas, and worked with the outfielders and base runners. Clark was part of the staff that was named 2018 NFCA Division I South Region Staff of the Year, and should bring an exciting energy to an upward-trending Buckeye softball team.

Clark isn’t the only SEC transfer to Ohio State recently, the Buckeyes added pitcher Lauren Rice from Missouri to their roster last week. In fact, Rice pitched a complete game victory over Clark and the Razorbacks in 2018, in addition to a big win over No. 5 Georgia.

“We are thrilled to add someone with Lauren’s experience to our pitching staff,” said Kovach Schoenly. “She is a power pitcher but more importantly, she is fierce. We are excited to add depth to our staff.”

The right-handed ace had a stellar freshman year for the Tigers, leading the team in a host of categories, including: wins (12), ERA (3.25), appearances (35), games started (23), complete games (7), shutouts (3), combined shutouts (5), saves (2), innings pitched (146.2), strikeouts (86) and batting average against (.256).

Rice throws 70-plus mph in the circle, and notched a perfect game in 2015 and three consecutive no-hitters during her high school career.

NFL Buckeye bits from the week

Malik Hooker on the Colts’ culture shift toward winning — Andrew Walker, Colts.com

“I’m definitely the guy that I feel like we’re capable of winning now,” Hooker told reporters during this offseason. “You know, we’ve got a lot of great players, a lot of good players coming back as well. So I feel like this year, we’ve got a young, fast and good, physical team, so I feel like we’re definitely capable of winning now.”
On Nick Vannett being a TE sleeper for the Seahawks — ChristinaCola, Field Gulls

“With Jimmy Graham nothing but a memory, Vannett is my pick for a TE sleeper. Vannett snaps have been slowly increasing over the past two seasons, and he finally has an opportunity to be Wilson’s go-to option in the passing game at tight end.”
Marshon Lattimore on his next professional goal — Joel Erickson, The Advocate

“We talk about it all the time, we’re just trying to be the best,” Lattimore said. “We won rookie of the year, now we’re trying to win Defensive Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year.”
Malcolm Jenkins on ‘Dreams and Nightmares’ being the Eagles’ anthem — Brandon Gowton, Bleeding Green Nation

“And two weeks before the Super Bowl, or it might have been starting in the playoffs, our special teams coach, Coach [Dave] Fipp, just one day put it on. He was at least like three minutes of his whole meeting because the whole group had just gone crazy in the special teams meeting.”
On Ezekiel Elliott’s quiet offseason and what it means for the Cowboys — Connor Livesay, Blogging The Boys

“In 2018, Ezekiel Elliott is looking for a fresh start entering his third-year in the league. Elliott’s offseason so far has been very quiet, which is very good for both the team and the player. “
On Terrelle Pryor and the Top 10 Supplemental Draft picks — Christian D’Andrea, SB Nation

“Pryor beats out players like Jared Gaither, Dave Brown, and Steve Walsh for the final spot on the list thanks to one breakout season at wide receiver and the fact he’s still got time to prove last year’s disappointing campaign was an outlier.”
On Cameron Heyward’s successful petition to EA Sports — Simon Chester, Behind the Steel Curtain

The Buckeyes’ 2019 class continues to see its stock rise.

Even if it is only July, and it seems that football is way in the future, at Ohio State, there is always something going on. With Big Ten Media days coming soon we know that the season is approaching quickly. Fall camp is set to start soon after Big Ten Media days, and Buckeye Nation is gearing up for the highly anticipated 2018 season. Until then, the staff has the plate full with not only the team’s development, but also recruiting. That’s never going to change as long as Meyer and his staff are at the helm of the Buckeye program. He’s made it more than clear year after year that if you can’t recruit, you can’t coach at Ohio State. Fortunately for fans, this staff has no problem with recruiting as they continue to be one of the best recruiting programs in the country.

Go ahead and add that 5th star big fella

The offensive line and more specifically the center position at Ohio State has seen some serious success in the past few seasons. With NFL teams drafting guys such as Pat Elflein and Billy Price who both are not only back-to-back first round draft picks, but also back-to-back Rimington Trophy award winners, the Buckeyes have more examples than just these two to make a serious recruiting pitch and it’s paid off big time for Meyer and company. In the 2019 class, no recruit may be more impressive than Georgia native, Harry Miller. A monster sized prospect, at 6-foot-4, 310 pounds, Harry with his stature alone would turn some heads. Add that to the fact that he may be the best recruit you could get means Ohio State struck gold when they landed Harry. A class valedictorian, Miller is a prized recruit both on and off the field.

With an impressive camp at Nike’s “The Opening” in Texas recently, Miller saw his ranking continue to rise. When he committed to Ohio State on June 10, Harry was listed as a very highly graded 4-star. Yesterday however, saw that 4-star status increase to a 5-star for 247 sports and that bodes well for the prospective Ohio State’s 2019 center. With a new star status, Miller is still the second best center prospect in the country for 2019 as well as the 32nd best recruit nationally for his class. Miller plans to graduate on time in June of 2019 eliminating the chance to enroll early, but with his high skill-set and intelligence, it’s becoming more and more clear that getting to campus after the spring season won’t really put him too far behind. The next Rimington Award winner may be headed to Columbus once again.

Some light shed on 2019 TE’s?

In every recruiting cycle there’s just some positions that you have to add depth too. For instance the quarterback and on both offensive and defensive lines, depth is crucial to the success of your future seasons. One position Ohio State recruited perfectly in 2018 was at the tight-end when Jeremy Ruckert signed with the Buckeyes. With all of the negative press the Buckeyes sometimes get concerning the position and mostly because of how tight-ends are used in Columbus, that didn’t have Ruckert worried when he picked his school of choice.

When you take the Ohio State tight-ends as group there’s really not a real concern for adding major depth. Ruckert as we previously mentioned just arrived to campus and when you consider Luke Farrell, Jake Hausmann, and Rashod Berry too, these are all guys with multiple years of eligibility still left on the shelf. A solid room for position coach, Kevin Wilson who is a true developer of the position and one would have to come to the conclusion Ohio State is set with their stockpiling of tight-ends for at least the next recruiting class. However, the recruitment of guys such as Brenton Strange brings the thought that the Buckeyes may in fact be in the market for another tight-end in 2019 even if the depth on campus is already very solid.

Strange is certainly thought to be the guy if the above information is indeed correct. Camping at Ohio State and visiting multiple times already this summer, it looked as if the Strange relationship was definitely commit worthy. Add in the in-state Erick All situation where a Buckeye offer never took place ending in a Michigan commitment, and you’d almost bank on Brenton Strange to the Buckeyes. This still could be true, but recent news has come out in the past few days that another prospect may be joining the headlines. Tennessee native, Cormontae Hamilton recently had a 247sports crystal ball prediction in favor of Ohio State. The interesting note here is the prediction was put in by a Tennessee insider so his wisdom has to be somewhat close to the situation.

June was a big month for Cormontae as he attended both camps at Alabama and Ohio State. Earning offers from both, Hamilton’s stock is sure to increase considering two of the prolific programs in college football both felt he was worthy of an offer. Time will tell how this plays out, but it could almost be a situation where the first tight-end to commit is the one that’s taken by the staff. Strange has been in this race a bit longer, but with the Cormontae development, anything is possible.

“No, not at all,” said Stein, when asked if he ever envisioned himself joining the Buckeyes, the reigning Big Ten champion and national runners-up. “I used to go to matches and watch these guys online, and I'm like, 'Wow, these guys are beasts.' … I ...

MotS&G What to Expect: Defensive Line

What to Expect: Defensive Line

Ohio State is expected to remain one of the top defensive lines in the country. Even with three seniors leaving, Jayln Holmes, Tracey Sprinkle and Tyquan Lewis, and one early departure, Sam Hubbard, Ohio State has raw talent. The group is young and looking to make a name for themselves with hard footsteps to follow.

Headlined by Nick Bosa at defensive end. Bosa is looking to improve his 8.5 sacks and 19 solo sacks a year ago. He is already dropping jaws at his stellar performances and wants to continue his and his family legacy at Ohio State. In my opinion, Bosa will do just that. As he had to share snaps last year with second-round draft pick, Tyquan Lewis, Bosa will get plenty of playing time this season, and earn his top 5 draft pick.

On the other side from Bosa is another familiar name, Chase Young. Young saw playing time last year, but really only in garbage time. With so many older, more experienced players in front of him, it was hard to get him in. However, going into his sophomore year Young will get a chance to really show off his talents. Young has all the makings of being a top ten draft pick, and this year is the start of it. Splitting the snaps with Young and Bosa will be Johnathon Cooper, a redshirt freshman, and Jashon Cornell, a redshirt sophomore. Cooper is the third defensive end and will get the bulk of the playing time alongside Bosa and Young. Cornell can earn significant playing time if he shows up in camp and on the field.

The middle guys are the big question here. Dre’mont Jones and Robert Landers saw playing time last year and most likely will be the two starters at the defensive tackle positions. However, Antwuan Jackson is a transfer from Auburn. Jackson was going to commit to Ohio State or Auburn back in 2015 but chose Auburn at the time. Now in 2018, Jackson is where he belongs and will have a huge part on our defensive line. Haskell Garrett and Davon Hamilton are also “backups.” The coaching staff is loving the depth at the defensive line position and all these players could earn significant time this year. The coaching staff also loved Tommy Togiai the true freshman who had a great spring and is hoping to get in the rotation.

What I am expecting this year is the defensive line to continue dominating like in years past. The only real problem Ohio State has right now is creating enough game time to get all these players in. Ohio State has recruited well at the defensive end position ever since Urban got into Columbus, and with Larry Johnson at the helm the only thing stopping these players from making a name for themselves is themselves. Even with all the talent that has left in the last few years, the Buckeyes just keep on reloading.
